A comparison essay compares and contrasts two things. That is, it points out the similarities and differences (mostly focusing on the differences) of those two things. The two things usually belong to the same class (ex. two cities, two politicians, two sports, etc.). Relatively equal attention is given to the two subjects being compared. The essay may treat the two things objectively and impartially. Or it may be partial, favoring one thing over the other (ex. "American football is a sissy's game compared to rugby").

The important thing in any comparison essay is that the criteria for comparison should remain the same; that is,  the same attributes should be compared . For example, if you are comparing an electric bulb lamp with a gas lamp, compare them both according to their physical characteristics, their history of development, and their operation.

Narrow Your Focus (in this essay, as in any essay). For example, if you compare two religions, focus on  one  particular aspect which you can discuss in depth and detail, e.g., sin in Buddhism vs. sin in Christianity, or salvation in two religions. Or if your topic is political, you might compare the Conservative attitude to old growth logging vs. the Green Party's attitude to old growth logging, or the Conservative attitude to the Persian Gulf War vs. the NDP attitude to the same war.

Each paragraph should deal with only  one idea  and deal with it  thoroughly . Give  adequate explanation  and  specific examples  to support each idea. The first paragraph introduces the topic, captures the reader's attention, and provides a definite summary of the essay. It may be wise to end the first paragraph with a thesis statement that summarizes the main points of difference (or similarity). For example, "Submarines and warships differ not only in construction, but in their style of weapons and method of attack." This gives the reader a brief outline of your essay, allowing him to anticipate what's to come. Each middle paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that summarizes the main idea of that paragraph (ex. "The musical styles of Van Halen and Steely Dan are as differing in texture as are broken glass and clear water"). An opening sentence like this that uses a  metaphor  or  simile  not only summarizes the paragraph but captures the reader's attention, making him want to read on. Avoid a topic sentence that is too dull and too broad (ex. "There are many differences in the musical styles of Van Halen and Steely Dan").

VARY THE STRUCTURE

The  structure  of the comparison essay may vary. You may use  simultaneous comparison structure  in which the two things are compared together, feature by feature, point by point. For example, "The electric light bulb lasts 80 hours, while the gas lamp lasts only 20 hours . . . ." Or as in this example (comparing two American presidents):

Consider how perfectly Harding met the requirements for president. Wilson was a visionary who liked to identify himself with "forward-looking men"; Harding was as old-fashioned as those wooden Indians which used to stand in front of cigar stores, "a flower of the period before safety razors." Harding believed that statemanship had come to its apogee in the days of McKinley and Foraker. Wilson was cold. Harding was an affable small-town man, at ease with "folks"; he was an ideal companion to play poker with all Saturday night. Wilson had always been difficult of access; Harding was accessible to the last degree. etc.

Don't use simultaneous structure all the way through the essay, however. It becomes monotonous. Use it sparingly. For most of the essay, use  parallel order structure .

In  parallel order structure  you compare the two things separately but take up the same points in the same order. For example, you may spend half a paragraph on "thing A" and the other half of the paragraph on the corresponding characteristics of "thing B." Or, if you have enough material, devote one paragraph to the physical characteristics of an electric bulb lamp, and the next paragraph to the physical characteristics of the gas lamp.

Or say everything there is to say about the electric bulb lamp (its physical characteristics, history of development and operation), followed by everything there is to say about the gas lamp.

For the sake of variety  you may switch to simultaneous comparison at one point  in the essay, and then switch back to parallel order structure for the rest of the essay. In fact, there are many ways to structure a comparison essay; use whichever organization works best for your particular paper. Here are a few sample organizational methods. "A" stands for "thing A" (ex. electric lamp) and "B" stands for "thing B" (ex. gas lamp). This handout will help you first to determine whether a particular assignment is asking for comparison/contrast and then to generate a list of similarities and differences, decide which similarities and differences to focus on, and organize your paper so that it will be clear and effective. It will also explain how you can (and why you should) develop a thesis that goes beyond “Thing A and Thing B are similar in many ways but different in others.”

Introduction

In your career as a student, you’ll encounter many different kinds of writing assignments, each with its own requirements. One of the most common is the comparison/contrast essay, in which you focus on the ways in which certain things or ideas—usually two of them—are similar to (this is the comparison) and/or different from (this is the contrast) one another. By assigning such essays, your instructors are encouraging you to make connections between texts or ideas, engage in critical thinking, and go beyond mere description or summary to generate interesting analysis: when you reflect on similarities and differences, you gain a deeper understanding of the items you are comparing, their relationship to each other, and what is most important about them.

Recognizing comparison/contrast in assignments

Some assignments use words—like compare, contrast, similarities, and differences—that make it easy for you to see that they are asking you to compare and/or contrast. Here are a few hypothetical examples:

• Compare and contrast Frye’s and Bartky’s accounts of oppression.
• Compare WWI to WWII, identifying similarities in the causes, development, and outcomes of the wars.

Using comparison/contrast for all kinds of writing projects

Sometimes you may want to use comparison/contrast techniques in your own pre-writing work to get ideas that you can later use for an argument, even if comparison/contrast isn’t an official requirement for the paper you’re writing. For example, if you wanted to argue that Frye’s account of oppression is better than both de Beauvoir’s and Bartky’s, comparing and contrasting the main arguments of those three authors might help you construct your evaluation—even though the topic may not have asked for comparison/contrast and the lists of similarities and differences you generate may not appear anywhere in the final draft of your paper.

Discovering similarities and differences

Making a Venn diagram or a chart can help you quickly and efficiently compare and contrast two or more things or ideas. To make a Venn diagram, simply draw some overlapping circles, one circle for each item you’re considering. In the central area where they overlap, list the traits the two items have in common. Assign each one of the areas that doesn’t overlap; in those areas, you can list the traits that make the things different. Here’s a very simple example, using two pizza places:

Here are some general questions about different types of things you might have to compare. These are by no means complete or definitive lists; they’re just here to give you some ideas—you can generate your own questions for these and other types of comparison. You may want to begin by using the questions reporters traditionally ask: Who? What? Where? When? Why? How? If you’re talking about objects, you might also consider general properties like size, shape, color, sound, weight, taste, texture, smell, number, duration, and location.

Two historical periods or events

• When did they occur—do you know the date(s) and duration? What happened or changed during each? Why are they significant?
• What kinds of work did people do? What kinds of relationships did they have? What did they value?
• What kinds of governments were there? Who were important people involved?
• What caused events in these periods, and what consequences did they have later on?

Two ideas or theories

• What are they about?
• Did they originate at some particular time?
• Who created them? Who uses or defends them?
• What is the central focus, claim, or goal of each? What conclusions do they offer?
• How are they applied to situations/people/things/etc.?
• Which seems more plausible to you, and why? How broad is their scope?
• What kind of evidence is usually offered for them?

Two pieces of writing or art

• What are their titles? What do they describe or depict?
• What is their tone or mood? What is their form?
• Who created them? When were they created? Why do you think they were created as they were? What themes do they address?
• Do you think one is of higher quality or greater merit than the other(s)—and if so, why?
• For writing: what plot, characterization, setting, theme, tone, and type of narration are used?
• Where are they from? How old are they? What is the gender, race, class, etc. of each?
• What, if anything, are they known for? Do they have any relationship to each other?
• What are they like? What did/do they do? What do they believe? Why are they interesting?
• What stands out most about each of them?

Deciding what to focus on

By now you have probably generated a huge list of similarities and differences—congratulations! Next you must decide which of them are interesting, important, and relevant enough to be included in your paper. Ask yourself these questions:

• What’s relevant to the assignment?
• What’s relevant to the course?
• What’s interesting and informative?
• What matters to the argument you are going to make?
• What’s basic or central (and needs to be mentioned even if obvious)?
• Overall, what’s more important—the similarities or the differences?

Suppose that you are writing a paper comparing two novels. For most literature classes, the fact that they both use Caslon type (a kind of typeface, like the fonts you may use in your writing) is not going to be relevant, nor is the fact that one of them has a few illustrations and the other has none; literature classes are more likely to focus on subjects like characterization, plot, setting, the writer’s style and intentions, language, central themes, and so forth. However, if you were writing a paper for a class on typesetting or on how illustrations are used to enhance novels, the typeface and presence or absence of illustrations might be absolutely critical to include in your final paper.

Sometimes a particular point of comparison or contrast might be relevant but not terribly revealing or interesting. For example, if you are writing a paper about Wordsworth’s “Tintern Abbey” and Coleridge’s “Frost at Midnight,” pointing out that they both have nature as a central theme is relevant (comparisons of poetry often talk about themes) but not terribly interesting; your class has probably already had many discussions about the Romantic poets’ fondness for nature. Talking about the different ways nature is depicted or the different aspects of nature that are emphasized might be more interesting and show a more sophisticated understanding of the poems.

Your thesis

The thesis of your comparison/contrast paper is very important: it can help you create a focused argument and give your reader a road map so they don’t get lost in the sea of points you are about to make. As in any paper, you will want to replace vague reports of your general topic (for example, “This paper will compare and contrast two pizza places,” or “Pepper’s and Amante are similar in some ways and different in others,” or “Pepper’s and Amante are similar in many ways, but they have one major difference”) with something more detailed and specific. For example, you might say, “Pepper’s and Amante have similar prices and ingredients, but their atmospheres and willingness to deliver set them apart.”

Be careful, though—although this thesis is fairly specific and does propose a simple argument (that atmosphere and delivery make the two pizza places different), your instructor will often be looking for a bit more analysis. In this case, the obvious question is “So what? Why should anyone care that Pepper’s and Amante are different in this way?” One might also wonder why the writer chose those two particular pizza places to compare—why not Papa John’s, Dominos, or Pizza Hut? Again, thinking about the context the class provides may help you answer such questions and make a stronger argument. Here’s a revision of the thesis mentioned earlier:

Pepper’s and Amante both offer a greater variety of ingredients than other Chapel Hill/Carrboro pizza places (and than any of the national chains), but the funky, lively atmosphere at Pepper’s makes it a better place to give visiting friends and family a taste of local culture.

Organizing your paper

There are many different ways to organize a comparison/contrast essay. Here are two:

Subject-by-subject

Begin by saying everything you have to say about the first subject you are discussing, then move on and make all the points you want to make about the second subject (and after that, the third, and so on, if you’re comparing/contrasting more than two things). If the paper is short, you might be able to fit all of your points about each item into a single paragraph, but it’s more likely that you’d have several paragraphs per item. Using our pizza place comparison/contrast as an example, after the introduction, you might have a paragraph about the ingredients available at Pepper’s, a paragraph about its location, and a paragraph about its ambience. Then you’d have three similar paragraphs about Amante, followed by your conclusion.

The danger of this subject-by-subject organization is that your paper will simply be a list of points: a certain number of points (in my example, three) about one subject, then a certain number of points about another. This is usually not what college instructors are looking for in a paper—generally they want you to compare or contrast two or more things very directly, rather than just listing the traits the things have and leaving it up to the reader to reflect on how those traits are similar or different and why those similarities or differences matter. Thus, if you use the subject-by-subject form, you will probably want to have a very strong, analytical thesis and at least one body paragraph that ties all of your different points together.

A subject-by-subject structure can be a logical choice if you are writing what is sometimes called a “lens” comparison, in which you use one subject or item (which isn’t really your main topic) to better understand another item (which is). For example, you might be asked to compare a poem you’ve already covered thoroughly in class with one you are reading on your own. It might make sense to give a brief summary of your main ideas about the first poem (this would be your first subject, the “lens”), and then spend most of your paper discussing how those points are similar to or different from your ideas about the second.

Point-by-point

Rather than addressing things one subject at a time, you may wish to talk about one point of comparison at a time. There are two main ways this might play out, depending on how much you have to say about each of the things you are comparing. If you have just a little, you might, in a single paragraph, discuss how a certain point of comparison/contrast relates to all the items you are discussing. For example, I might describe, in one paragraph, what the prices are like at both Pepper’s and Amante; in the next paragraph, I might compare the ingredients available; in a third, I might contrast the atmospheres of the two restaurants.

If I had a bit more to say about the items I was comparing/contrasting, I might devote a whole paragraph to how each point relates to each item. For example, I might have a whole paragraph about the clientele at Pepper’s, followed by a whole paragraph about the clientele at Amante; then I would move on and do two more paragraphs discussing my next point of comparison/contrast—like the ingredients available at each restaurant.

There are no hard and fast rules about organizing a comparison/contrast paper, of course. Just be sure that your reader can easily tell what’s going on! Be aware, too, of the placement of your different points. If you are writing a comparison/contrast in service of an argument, keep in mind that the last point you make is the one you are leaving your reader with. For example, if I am trying to argue that Amante is better than Pepper’s, I should end with a contrast that leaves Amante sounding good, rather than with a point of comparison that I have to admit makes Pepper’s look better. If you’ve decided that the differences between the items you’re comparing/contrasting are most important, you’ll want to end with the differences—and vice versa, if the similarities seem most important to you.

Cue words and other tips

To help your reader keep track of where you are in the comparison/contrast, you’ll want to be sure that your transitions and topic sentences are especially strong. Your thesis should already have given the reader an idea of the points you’ll be making and the organization you’ll be using, but you can help them out with some extra cues. The following words may be helpful to you in signaling your intentions:

• like, similar to, also, unlike, similarly, in the same way, likewise, again, compared to, in contrast, in like manner, contrasted with, on the contrary, however, although, yet, even though, still, but, nevertheless, conversely, at the same time, regardless, despite, while, on the one hand … on the other hand.

For example, you might have a topic sentence like one of these:

• Compared to Pepper’s, Amante is quiet.
• Like Amante, Pepper’s offers fresh garlic as a topping.
• Despite their different locations (downtown Chapel Hill and downtown Carrboro), Pepper’s and Amante are both fairly easy to get to.

Private school vs. public school.

10.7 Comparison and Contrast

The Purpose of Comparison and Contrast in Writing

Comparison in writing discusses elements that are similar, while contrast in writing discusses elements that are different. A compare-and-contrast essay , then, analyzes two subjects by comparing them, contrasting them, or both.

The key to a good compare-and-contrast essay is to choose two or more subjects that connect in a meaningful way. The purpose of conducting the comparison or contrast is not to state the obvious but rather to illuminate subtle differences or unexpected similarities. For example, if you wanted to focus on contrasting two subjects you would not pick apples and oranges; rather, you might choose to compare and contrast two types of oranges or two types of apples to highlight subtle differences. For example, Red Delicious apples are sweet, while Granny Smiths are tart and acidic. Drawing distinctions between elements in a similar category will increase the audience’s understanding of that category, which is the purpose of the compare-and-contrast essay.

Similarly, to focus on comparison, choose two subjects that seem at first to be unrelated. For a comparison essay, you likely would not choose two apples or two oranges because they share so many of the same properties already. Rather, you might try to compare how apples and oranges are quite similar. The more divergent the two subjects initially seem, the more interesting a comparison essay will be.

Writing at Work

Comparing and contrasting is also an evaluative tool. In order to make accurate evaluations about a given topic, you must first know the critical points of similarity and difference. Comparing and contrasting is a primary tool for many workplace assessments. You have likely compared and contrasted yourself to other colleagues. Employee advancements, pay raises, hiring, and firing are typically conducted using comparison and contrast. Comparison and contrast could be used to evaluate companies, departments, or individuals.

Brainstorm an essay that leans toward contrast. Choose one of the following three categories. Pick two examples from each. Then come up with one similarity and three differences between the examples.

• Romantic comedies
• Internet search engines
• Cell phones

The Structure of a Comparison and Contrast Essay

The compare-and-contrast essay starts with a thesis that clearly states the two subjects that are to be compared, contrasted, or both and the reason for doing so. The thesis could lean more toward comparing, contrasting, or both. Remember, the point of comparing and contrasting is to provide useful knowledge to the reader. Take the following thesis as an example that leans more toward contrasting.

Thesis statement: Organic vegetables may cost more than those that are conventionally grown, but when put to the test, they are definitely worth every extra penny.

Here the thesis sets up the two subjects to be compared and contrasted (organic versus conventional vegetables), and it makes a claim about the results that might prove useful to the reader.

You may organize compare-and-contrast essays in one of the following two ways:

• According to the subjects themselves, discussing one then the other
• According to individual points, discussing each subject in relation to each point

The organizational structure you choose depends on the nature of the topic, your purpose, and your audience.

Given that compare-and-contrast essays analyze the relationship between two subjects, it is helpful to have some phrases on hand that will cue the reader to such analysis. See Table 10.3 “Phrases of Comparison and Contrast” for examples.

Create an outline for each of the items you chose in Note 10.72 “Exercise 1” and Note 10.73 “Exercise 2” . Use the point-by-point organizing strategy for one of them, and use the subject organizing strategy for the other.

Writing a Comparison and Contrast Essay

First choose whether you want to compare seemingly disparate subjects, contrast seemingly similar subjects, or compare and contrast subjects. Once you have decided on a topic, introduce it with an engaging opening paragraph. Your thesis should come at the end of the introduction, and it should establish the subjects you will compare, contrast, or both as well as state what can be learned from doing so.

The body of the essay can be organized in one of two ways: by subject or by individual points. The organizing strategy that you choose will depend on, as always, your audience and your purpose. You may also consider your particular approach to the subjects as well as the nature of the subjects themselves; some subjects might better lend themselves to one structure or the other. Make sure to use comparison and contrast phrases to cue the reader to the ways in which you are analyzing the relationship between the subjects.

After you finish analyzing the subjects, write a conclusion that summarizes the main points of the essay and reinforces your thesis. See Chapter 15 “Readings: Examples of Essays” to read a sample compare-and-contrast essay.

Many business presentations are conducted using comparison and contrast. The organizing strategies—by subject or individual points—could also be used for organizing a presentation. Keep this in mind as a way of organizing your content the next time you or a colleague have to present something at work.

Choose one of the outlines you created in Note 10.75 “Exercise 3” , and write a full compare-and-contrast essay. Be sure to include an engaging introduction, a clear thesis, well-defined and detailed paragraphs, and a fitting conclusion that ties everything together.

Organic grown tomatoes purchased at the farmers’ market are very different from tomatoes that are grown conventionally. To begin with, although tomatoes from both sources will mostly be red, the tomatoes at the farmers’ market are a brighter red than those at a grocery store. That doesn’t mean they are shinier—in fact, grocery store tomatoes are often shinier since they have been waxed. You are likely to see great size variation in tomatoes at the farmers’ market, with tomatoes ranging from only a couple of inches across to eight inches across. By contrast, the tomatoes in a grocery store will be fairly uniform in size. All the visual differences are interesting, but the most important difference is the taste. The farmers’ market tomatoes will be bursting with flavor from ripening on the vine in their own time. However, the grocery store tomatoes are often close to being flavorless. In conclusion, the differences in organic and conventionally grown tomatoes are obvious in color, size and taste.

Soccer and American Football

       Not everyone thinks about the same thing when they hear “football.” Depending on where you live, “football” might be one of two different games. When most people in the United States hear the word “football,” they think of players throwing, catching, or kicking a brown ball. They picture a large field with tall goalposts on both ends of the field. They can hear cheerleaders and coaches yelling from the sidelines. For the rest of the world, “football” usually means watching players kick, pass, and shoot a round ball with their feet. They imagine a large field with goals on each end. They picture players from their national team competing in the World Cup. These two very different games are imagined by saying the same word: “football.” Even though they share a name, the equipment, the scoring system, and the rules of American football and soccer are different.

       The equipment is the first major difference between American football and soccer. In American football, the players need to wear protective clothing because it can be a dangerous game to play. The players need to wear helmets to protect their heads, mouth guards for their teeth, and large pads for their shoulders and backs. The players use a brown ball that is pointed on the ends. On the other hand, soccer players do not need to wear helmets and lots of protective pads. The players just have pads to protect their shins, and the goalie wears gloves. The ball they use in soccer is round. The ball is usually a bright color like white. It is easy to see that soccer and American football definitely require different equipment.

       Another big difference between soccer and American football is how points are scored. The scoring system in soccer is very simple. In soccer, a point is scored every time the ball makes it past the goalie into the net behind him. However, the score for American football is not as simple. In American football, players get points for touchdowns, PAT’s, and field goals. A “touchdown” is when a player with the ball runs across the 0-yard line. That is worth six points. After a touchdown is scored, the team who got the touchdown gets to kick the ball between the goal posts for one point. “Field goals” are worth three points. You get a field goal when you kick the ball between the goal posts without getting a touchdown. There are even more ways to score points for safety and conversions. With the simplicity of soccer’s scoring system and the complexity of American football’s scoring system, it is clear these two sports have very different scoring methods.

       Finally, the rules of the two sports are very distinct. In American football, players can carry, kick, or throw the ball. The quarterback decides who to throw the ball to. He throws the ball and the player who catches the ball tries to run to the end of the field. The other players try to steal the ball or tackle the player with the ball. In soccer, only the goalie can touch the ball with his hands. The other players try to kick and pass the ball to each other with their feet. The forwards try to pass the ball to each other as they travel to the end of the field. When players get close to the goal, they try to kick the ball into the goal. Players don’t try to tackle each other in soccer like they do in American football. Soccer seems to have much simpler rules than American football.

       It’s easy to see how American football and soccer are different from one another in three areas: the rules, scoring, and equipment. It is interesting that such different sports came to be known by the same name. Both sports are very popular, even though American football is not as widely played internationally. The next time you hear someone say the word “football,” which pictures will come to your mind? Players in helmets? Goalies jumping to block the ball? Tall goalposts? Your national team? Maybe all of these pictures will come into your mind. After all, it’s all football.

Sky Sports+: What is the new channel, how will it work and how does it compare to iFollow?

Over the last few months, people at Sky Sports’ headquarters in west London have been working on something in secret. It was codenamed ‘Project Chilly.’

All was revealed on Wednesday when the broadcaster announced it will launch a new channel, called Sky Sports+, in August. It is a development which will have a significant impact on their coverage of the English Football League ( EFL ).

This can all be traced back to this time last year, when the 72 EFL clubs approved a recommendation by the league’s board and commercial committee to enter into a new broadcast deal with Sky Sports. That agreement will run for five years, from the 2024-25 season through to the end of the 2028-29 one. It is made up of guaranteed payments of £895million, plus an extra £40m in marketing benefits.

Sky Sports will show four times as many EFL matches as it does currently, including 328 from the Championship, English football’s second tier. Last month, it said that, as part of the deal, iFollow and club streaming services would be scrapped domestically.

This is where the new channel comes into the mix.

But what will change? How will it all work? The Athletic explains Sky Sports+, the new EFL deal and what it means for fans.

How will it work?

Sky Sports+, which will not cost any more for existing customers, will be integrated into the broadcaster’s current services when it officially launches later this summer.

The new channel will have the capability to show up to 100 live events — at the same time. You will be able to watch every match from the men’s rugby Super League and coverage from major golf and tennis events, but the biggest change relates to Sky’s EFL content.

It will televise 1,059 EFL fixtures, including 248 from both League One and League Two . All midweek matches across the EFL’s three divisions will be exclusively broadcast live on Sky Sports, and every game played during international breaks (when the Premier League is inactive), on the final day of each division’s regular season and in the promotion play-offs will be available to watch too. Fans of the Carabao Cup can check out all 93 ties live, while every fixture of the EFL Trophy will also be on offer, if that’s your thing.

Put simply, Sky Sports+ is the shiny replacement for their current red-button services.

What are the positives?

The best piece of news was revealed by Sky Sports’ managing director Jonathan Licht at a special launch event held on Wednesday morning at their base in Isleworth, a 20-minute drive from London’s Heathrow Airport.

Sky Sports plans to announce all the EFL fixtures it will showing live from August until the third round of the FA Cup in early January before the season even starts. And by November, Sky intends to confirm which games it will show between January and March. The rest of the season will follow a more “traditional” notice period, as the broadcaster attempts to stay across the main storylines.

Sky is conscious of the impact changing kick-off times at short notice for TV broadcast has on match-going fans and wants to minimise disruption by giving them longer to plan and prepare. Licht said it takes this responsibility “seriously” and selects games “in a timely manner”, but then discussions need to be held with safety officials, the police and other competitions. The broadcaster hopes this new approach will improve that process.

Another bonus is that every game on the opening weekend of the EFL season in August will be televised live — a first in broadcasting history.

Licht said that 20 of the 48 teams in League One and League Two only appeared on television once this season. Sky has promised to show every club from those divisions 20 times in the next one, while for Championship sides that figure is 24.

What are the negatives?

Following on from our previous point, it is rare for some clubs in the third and fourth tiers of the English game to be shown on TV. So supporters in those divisions have become accustomed to watching their team play each Saturday at 3pm UK time, apart from on special occasions.

The new arrangement changes that completely, and they will have to adjust to different kick-off times. This could have a negative impact on attendances if games are regularly moved into slots that are less convenient for fans.

Football is also a difficult sport to predict.

Nobody expected Ipswich Town to achieve back-to-back promotions to reach the 2023-24 Premier League, but that’s what they’ve done. Picking TV games six months in advance helps fans who will travel to those games, but it also increases the risk of fixtures between teams where there is not a lot at stake by the time matchday arrives being shown instead.

You could also argue part of the magic of Ipswich’s fairytale is that not many people watched them at the beginning of the season before they grabbed our attention and became essential viewing.

Will clubs benefit financially?

The new deal represents a 50 per cent rise in TV rights income compared to the current arrangement.

Under the existing terms, the EFL estimated annual revenue for its 72 member clubs stands at £119million, with an extra £7m in streaming income. From next season, annual income from TV will increase to £180m plus £7m from both domestic streaming and international.

The way money is distributed favours Championship clubs, who tend to attract the most viewers. When the deal was announced last year, the EFL predicted teams in the second tier would be 46 per cent better off compared to 25 per cent in its other two divisions.

One club official, who spoke to The Athletic about the broadcast changes earlier this month on the condition of anonymity to protect relationships, estimated the increase in League One will work out at £450,000 per club and maybe a little over half that in League Two.

How will it compare to iFollow?

iFollow, the EFL’s existing streaming service, will close in the UK but keep running for the rest of the globe.

The major differences domestically will be the number of games available — and the centralised nature of Sky Sports+. On iFollow, fans could only watch matches outside of the 3pm Saturday broadcast window that were not a main game shown on Sky Sports.

Fans of different clubs will also be able to watch games across the breadth of the EFL.

Previously, games on iFollow were sold on a pay-per-view basis. This means a fan of Leeds United , for example, was never likely to pay the £10 needed to watch a Crawley Town match that was available on iFollow.

How will Sky produce this many live games every weekend?

It is a huge step up in scale for Sky Sports, and they will need to be flexible.

For example, there will be at least eight cameras for games on its existing channels but for streamed matches, this drops to a minimum of four in League One and two for League Two. They also have the small issue of finding commentary teams for all those games.

What will a normal weekend look like?

Each weekend will have 10 live EFL matches, half of which will be from the Championship. These will be screened outside the 2.45pm to 5.15pm period on a Saturday that remains blocked under Article 48 of UEFA ’s statutes, whereby member nations can select a two-and-a-half-hour weekend slot that sees live football banned from broadcast to protect attendances.

This means there will be 26 games in the traditional 3pm slot each Saturday across the EFL. However, the blocked period does not apply to the opening weekend, so they will show games at that time.

Six games will be shown in the Saturday lunchtime slot, and the rest will be split between Friday night and Sunday lunchtime. Sky Sports are not currently thinking about adding any other kick-off slots.

Is there anything else I need to know?

During a Q&A session, Licht was asked about extra content Sky Sports could provide around the matches. One person mentioned long-form storytelling and gave the Welcome To Wrexham documentary series as an example, while another suggested a weekly round-up show. Licht said his company wants to tell the stories of clubs across the divisions but is still working out the best ways to do that.

Coverage of the EFL on Sky Sports+ next season also feels like it could be a test event for the Premier League.

The new four-year broadcast deal for the top flight kicks in from the beginning of the 2025-26 season, with Sky Sports increasing the number of live fixtures it shows by 70 per cent to a minimum of 215.

When the 2015 AFL season came to an end, Geelong and North Melbourne were virtually neck and neck.

The Kangaroos ended the season having made their second consecutive preliminary final after another against-the-odds finals campaign under Brad Scott despite finishing the home and away season eighth.

Geelong missed the finals altogether for the first time since 2006 after winning just 11 games under Scott's twin brother, Chris. 

In the decade that followed the two teams' fortunes could not be any different.

Geelong has since missed the finals on just one occasion, in 2023, a year after winning a premiership. The Cats have won a combined 117 home and away games along with nine finals wins, 124 if you include the seven wins they have already amassed so far this year.

In comparison, it has been a grim decade for the Kangaroos. Since 2015, the Kangaroos have won just 52 games and have not made the finals since 2016, when they were belted by Adelaide in an elimination final. 

So why have the two teams had such contrasting fortunes in the last decade?

Attracting stars vs the inability to do so

There are so many aspects to team-building in the AFL, but your chances of a premiership begin and end with your best players and how many top-end stars you can have on your list at any one time.

It is no secret that Geelong's immediate spike up the ladder in 2016 (from 10th to second in the home and away season) coincided with the arrival of current skipper Patrick Dangerfield.

Dangerfield, a Moggs Creek product who had played for the Geelong Falcons at the Under 18 level, had long been linked with a move to the Cats after starting his career with Adelaide. 

By the time Dangerfield decided to exercise his rights as a restricted free agent to join Geelong at the end of 2015, he'd already racked up three All-Australian jackets, and two top-five finishes in the Brownlow Medal. 

Geelong, knowing it would have to make room to acquire Dangerfield, slowly began picking off parts of the core that won premierships in 2007, 2009 and 2011 in the years preceding his arrival.  

Between the end of 2012 and 2015, Geelong oversaw the exits of premiership stalwarts Matthew Scarlett, Joel Corey, Paul Chapman, James Kelly and Steve Johnson, with Dangerfield essentially acting as the bridge between two different premiership windows. 

The addition of Dangerfield was virtually mirrored five years later, when the Cats were able to add star forward Jeremy Cameron, who was also a restricted free agent. The pair played a crucial role in Geelong's run to the 2022 premiership. 

Geelong's reputation as one of the best-run sporting organisations in the country has allowed it to position itself favourably when it comes to attracting stars. Players regularly take discounts to be a part of the Cats machine, knowing buy-in could result in team success, as it has for Dangerfield and Cameron. While other clubs will break the bank in order to try and lure stars, Geelong doesn't overpay.

North Melbourne has been stuck on the absolute other end of the spectrum. 

Like Geelong did during the mid 2010s, the Kangaroos also attempted to gradually transition their list into a new era around the same time.

After topping up with veterans like Nick Dal Santo and Jarrad Waite, the Kangaroos cleaned house at the end of 2016 in what was a controversial move. 

Club and league games record-holder Brent Harvey was forced into retirement after not being offered another contract despite a strong season. He was joined by Dal Santo and veteran defender Michael Firrito also retiring, while Drew Petrie was delisted.

The retirements continued in 2017 when Lachlan Hansen and Andrew Swallow called time, while goalsneak Lindsay Thomas was also delisted.

North Melbourne's savage list cull, like Geelong's, had a purpose. While the Cats had been eyeing off Patrick Dangerfield for years, the Kangaroos had their sights set on Richmond's Dustin Martin.

As Martin began to put together a historic Brownlow Medal-winning year with the Tigers in 2017, there was hope from Arden Street that he would be lured by a whopping reported seven-year, $10.5 million contract.

However, on the eve of Richmond's finals campaign which would end in a drought-breaking premiership, Martin recommitted to the Tigers, sacrificing up to $2 million to remain at the club that drafted him.

With Martin off the table, North suddenly had a massive war chest to attract the next available star seeking a seachange. 

Unfortunately for the club in the years following Martin's rejection, the likes of Andrew Gaff and Josh Kelly opted to remain with their clubs instead of coming to North Melbourne, leaving the club to settle for a disappointing bounty of Jared Polec, Jasper Pittard, Dom Tyson and Aaron Hall in the summer of 2018. 

Polec, who was coming off a career-best season with Port Adelaide, signed a five-year deal that summer but wound up playing just 42 games for the Kangaroos before he was delisted at the end of 2022. 

Differing success in the draft

While Geelong has built much of its success off the back of star recruits such as Dangerfield and Cameron, the premiership-winning list in 2022 was littered with several draft steals.

The Cats' presence near the top of the ladder has meant high-end draft picks have been rarely available, but Geelong has consistently hit on selections later on in the draft.

The 2016 draft saw the Cats add Brandan Parfitt with the 26th pick before hitting one of the great draft home runs by taking Tom Stewart 40th. 

In 2017, the Cats took Tim Kelly as a mature-aged pick at number 24 and Kelly was an All-Australian midfielder within two seasons before he was shipped to West Coast for four draft picks. At the back end of the same draft, Geelong added Gryan Miers.

Sam De Koning (pick 19, 2019) and Max Holmes (pick 20, 2020) are both stars who would likely go inside the top five of their respective classes in a re-draft. 

Geelong has also benefited from the additions of Jack Henry, Zach Guthrie, Tom Atkins, Brad Close and Ollie Dempsey through the rookie draft. 

Comparatively, the Kangaroos have enjoyed far less success, despite having access to more top picks over the last decade. 

North can count Ben McKay (pick 21, 2015), Jy Simpkin (pick 12, 2016), Nick Larkey (pick 73, 2016) and Luke Davies-Uniacke (pick 4, 2017) as its major draft wins inside the last decade, but the wins are few and far between. 

It is extremely early, but Harry Sheezel (pick 3, 2022), George Wardlaw (pick 4, 2022) and Colby McKercher (pick 2, 2023) all look to be excellent selections who will build the nucleus of a strong Kangaroos side in the next five years. Jason Horne-Francis would've joined this list if he hadn't requested a trade after just one season with the Kangaroos.

In terms of the rookie draft, the Kangaroos can only count Cam Zurhaar, who was taken in 2016, as its only major win.

The importance of stability both on and off the field

Former AFL coach Paul Roos, who oversaw the start of Melbourne's rebuild, believes lengthy rebuilds are detrimental to a team's culture. 

"I spoke to a player the other day ... and he's implored his football manager and recruitment team to not rebuild. Players are now understanding that it doesn't work," he told the ABC's AFL Daily podcast.

"He's actually saying we'll lose players, we'll go down to the bottom of the ladder and never get better again.

"You need leaders to teach your young players how to play. There's this ridiculous notion of, 'Let's just get all these kids in and eventually we'll become good', that's absolute garbage. They don't learn how to play properly because they've got no direction. 

"Let me tell you who's laughing at all the clubs who want to rebuild — Geelong and Sydney."

While the likes of Tom Hawkins and Joel Selwood provided stability on the field for the best part of two decades, the Cats have also benefited from immense stability off the field. 

Senior coach Chris Scott and his assistants Nigel Lappin and Shane O'Bree have all been mainstays over the last decade. 

At the Kangaroos, since long-time coach Brad Scott departed midway through the 2019 season, the club has had five separate coaches in charge (although one of those was Brett Ratten who coached North while Alastair Clarkson took a mental health break last year). 

The problem for the Kangaroos is, that even with top-end talent in tow, bad habits form on losing teams, habits that are hard to correct. 

"It's also the standards around losing," Roos said of tanking for high picks.

"If you look at the way the great teams are built, you build it around contest, defence. You've got to build habits in your players. It's like building a house. It's like building a game plan from the ground up, and if you're not building it from the ground up, players love making excuses."

It's been a painful decade for the Kangaroos, and this year's 0-9 start proves that contention is still years away for this group.

Kangaroos fans will be yearning for the days of the late 90s when their side was the benchmark of the competition. Geelong languished in the bottom half of the ladder in that same era.

However, football has proven time and time again that it is cyclical, and North diehards will hope their time is coming soon.

NFL's top 10 highest-paid QBs of 2024: Jared Goff No. 2 on list after deal; comparing records, playoff results

Are the best-compensated signal-callers really the best.

Jared Goff just became a much richer man Monday after the Detroit Lions inked their quarterback to a mammoth contract extension . Goff agreed to a four-year, $212 million contract that includes $170 million guaranteed. This deal now has him as the second-highest paid quarterback in the NFL only behind Bengals superstar Joe Burrow , who signed a record-setting $275 million deal last September. 

Now that he's being paid like an elite quarterback in the league, Detroit is hoping Goff can be the steady hand under center that helps propel the franchise to new heights as it hunts for that elusive Super Bowl title. While Goff and the Lions are coming off a successful season in 2023, backing up the Brinks truck for a quarterback doesn't always produce Lombardi Trophies. 

In fact, just one player inside the newly etched top 10 highest-paid quarterbacks in the league has hoisted a Lombardi Trophy -- Patrick Mahomes . Here's a rundown of the highest-paid signal-callers in the league and a comparative chart of how they stack up against one another on the field.

On top of Mahomes being the only quarterback within this top 10 to actually win a Super Bowl, just three others have been to the big game. That includes Goff, who was able to help bring the Los Angeles Rams to an appearance in Super Bowl LIII back in 2018. So, Goff has shown that he has the stuff to have Detroit knocking on the door of the Super Bowl. 

Still, this list does signal that quarterbacks are arguably overcompensated if the name of the game is to win at a high level in the playoffs. Only Mahomes and Burrow have playoff records above .500, and six of the 10 have records below .500. In any event, if Goff can lead the Lions to their first-ever Super Bowl title, no one will blink twice when hearing he's the second-highest-paid quarterback in the league.

It is nearly 10 years since Rory McIlroy claimed the last of his four major titles, a remarkable decade-long drought for a golfer of his considerable talents.

But will a return to the scene of his last triumph, Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, be precisely the remedy required for Rory?

Ten years ago, McIlroy edged out Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Henrik Stenson on a thrilling final day that drifted into darkness in Kentucky, securing him the Wanamaker Trophy for the second time in three years.

But what can we learn from his triumph and will it help him in his quest for that elusive fifth major this month, live on Sky Sports ?

The most notable difference between McIlroy's return to Valhalla this week and his 2014 success there, until the past month, was his form going in.

McIlroy admitted after a disappointing tied-22nd showing at The Masters last month that there is "lots of room for improvement" in his game, having finished higher than 19th just once in the first eight starts of his PGA Tour season.

He did follow that up a fortnight later with victory alongside Shane Lowry at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, before dominating the final round of the Wells Fargo Championship on Sunday to win the event for a record fourth time.

McIlroy carded a six-under 65 on the final day to finish five-strokes clear of Xander Schauffele, with his third win of the season - adding to the DP World Tour victory at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, meaning his pre-major form is now remarkable similar to his 2014 vintage.

The then 25-year-old was the red-hot favourite going into that year's PGA Championship, having emerged victorious at the Open Championship at Hoylake and the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in his previous two starts, catapulting the Northern Irishman back to world No 1.

Understandably, McIlroy said ahead of clinching his hat-trick of titles at Valhalla that he was in the form of his life - completely unaware of the 10-year trophyless stretch in majors that would follow.

"Mentally, it's the best I've ever been," McIlroy said at the time, reflecting on his Hoylake victory. "It was the most comfortable I've ever felt trying to close out a golf tournament.

"I didn't get ahead of myself; I didn't start to think about my score; I didn't think about where I was in the tournament; I just kept playing my shot after shot after shot."

McIlroy carried that shot-by-shot approach into the PGA Championship a mere two-and-a-half weeks later but his Valhalla triumph was unique, contrasting to the three major wins that had come before.

In 2011, McIlroy led from start to finish at the US Open to win his first title by eight strokes, while another eight-stroke victory followed at the 2012 PGA Championship, a record-winning margin. He also led after every round at Hoylake, albeit he had to hold off a late challenge from Sergio Garcia to win by two.

Heading into the back nine of his final round at Valhalla, McIlroy trailed an elite trio of Mickelson, Fowler and Stenson, tied at the top two strokes ahead of the Northern Irishman.

Left with a 284-yard second at the 590-yard par-five 10th - a hole that had cost him a double-bogey seven on day one - McIlroy attacked with his three-wood and sent the ball to within seven feet of the pin to put him back in contention with a stunning eagle-three.

"You need a little bit of luck in major championships to win and that was my lucky break," he admitted at the time.

McIlroy joined the tie for the lead before dropped shots for Fowler and Stenson at the 14th left only Mickelson for company at the top of the leaderboard and the Northern Irishman benefited from a blunder by the American at the par-four 16th, Mickelson missing a seven-foot putt for par.

Then, on the 17th, with McIlroy seemingly in trouble in a fairway bunker 150 yards from the pin, he wedged to within 11 feet before rolling in a birdie putt for a two-stroke lead with one hole to play.

Also adding to the drama of that 2014 finish at Valhalla was the fact that the final day had been severely affected by rain, a two-hour delay resulting in the championship finishing in near total darkness - the lights blazing from the clubhouse behind the 18th green.

Given the race against time to get play finished, the penultimate pairing of Mickelson and Fowler were forced to stand aside on the 18th to allow the final group of McIlroy and Bernd Wiesberger - whose challenge had faded with three bogeys - to tee off.

Mickelson did not seem happy with being asked to make way but channelled that into a stunning chip shot that he almost holed for eagle - his birdie at least forcing McIlroy to make par for the win.

McIlroy's drive flirted dangerously close to the water to the right of the 18th fairway and, despite later finding the greenside bunker, he came away with the par needed to clinch victory.

Reflecting earlier this month on those chaotic final moments in the dark from 10 years ago, McIlroy said: "I'd say I'm a pretty non-confrontational person, but when push comes to shove, I will.

"That was one of those times when I needed to sort of assert my will on a situation. I think if I wasn't as pushy as I was, I would have had to sleep on that lead and on that tee shot overnight - I just didn't want to do that.

"I think the guys up ahead were pretty unhappy with how it all unfolded. I got the result that I was looking for in the end and that's all that matters."

McIlroy's agonising near misses since 2014 triumph

That Valhalla victory for McIlroy saw him become the first player since Padraig Harrington in 2008 to win back-to-back majors.

It also made him the third-youngest player after Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus to win four majors, placing him one shy of the career tally of Seve Ballesteros and two off Sir Nick Faldo. Quite the exalted company to sit within and surely only the start of things for McIlroy?

Not quite. McIlroy in majors over the subsequent decade has been a repetitive tale of missed opportunities and near misses, with a staggering 20 top-10 finishes failing to be converted into titles.

In among those are three runners-up placings, with two of those coming in the past two particularly agonising years. In the nine major championships held since the start of 2022, McIlroy has only twice failed to finish eighth or higher, when failing to make the cut at The Masters in 2023 and his tied-22nd finish this year.

In 2022 at Augusta National, he finished second to the unstoppable force of Scottie Scheffler in pursuit of his first major title, McIlroy's stunning final-round of 64 - the best of the week - ultimately coming too late in proceedings to truly threaten the top of the leaderboard.

His third-place finish at that years' Open Championship and the 2023 US Open were far more agonising in nature.

Tied with Viktor Hovland going into the final round at St Andrews, McIlroy was overhauled by Cameron Smith as the Australian produced a sensational final-round 64 to win. The Northern Irishman ultimately finished third, unable to keep pace with the scoring, carding only two birdies on the Sunday.
