How-To Geek

6 ways to create more interactive powerpoint presentations.

Engage your audience with cool, actionable features.

Quick Links

  • Add a QR code
  • Embed Microsoft Forms (Education or Business Only)
  • Embed a Live Web Page
  • Add Links and Menus
  • Add Clickable Images to Give More Info
  • Add a Countdown Timer

We've all been to a presentation where the speaker bores you to death with a mundane PowerPoint presentation. Actually, the speaker could have kept you much more engaged by adding some interactive features to their slideshow. Let's look into some of these options.

1. Add a QR code

Adding a QR code can be particularly useful if you want to direct your audience to an online form, website, or video.

Some websites have in-built ways to create a QR code. For example, on Microsoft Forms , when you click "Collect Responses," you'll see the QR code option via the icon highlighted in the screenshot below. You can either right-click the QR code to copy and paste it into your presentation, or click "Download" to add it to your device gallery to insert the QR code as a picture.

In fact, you can easily add a QR code to take your viewer to any website. On Microsoft Edge, right-click anywhere on a web page where there isn't already a link, and left-click "Create QR Code For This Page."

You can also create QR codes in other browsers, such as Chrome.

You can then copy or download the QR code to use wherever you like in your presentation.

2. Embed Microsoft Forms (Education or Business Only)

If you plan to send your PPT presentation to others—for example, if you're a trainer sending step-by-step instruction presentation, a teacher sending an independent learning task to your students, or a campaigner for your local councilor sending a persuasive PPT to constituents—you might want to embed a quiz, questionnaire, pole, or feedback survey in your presentation.

In PowerPoint, open the "Insert" tab on the ribbon, and in the Forms group, click "Forms". If you cannot see this option, you can add new buttons to the ribbon .

As at April 2024, this feature is only available for those using their work or school account. We're using a Microsoft 365 Personal account in the screenshot below, which is why the Forms icon is grayed out.

Then, a sidebar will appear on the right-hand side of your screen, where you can either choose a form you have already created or opt to craft a new form.

Now, you can share your PPT presentation with others , who can click the fields and submit their responses when they view the presentation.

3. Embed a Live Web Page

You could always screenshot a web page and paste that into your PPT, but that's not a very interactive addition to your presentation. Instead, you can embed a live web page into your PPT so that people with access to your presentation can interact actively with its contents.

To do this, we will need to add an add-in to our PPT account .

Add-ins are not always reliable or secure. Before installing an add-in to your Microsoft account, check that the author is a reputable company, and type the add-in's name into a search engine to read reviews and other users' experiences.

To embed a web page, add the Web Viewer add-in ( this is an add-in created by Microsoft ).

Go to the relevant slide and open the Web Viewer add-in. Then, copy and paste the secure URL into the field box, and remove https:// from the start of the address. In our example, we will add a selector wheel to our slide. Click "Preview" to see a sample of the web page's appearance in your presentation.

This is how ours will look.

When you or someone with access to your presentation views the slideshow, this web page will be live and interactive.

4. Add Links and Menus

As well as moving from one slide to the next through a keyboard action or mouse click, you can create links within your presentation to direct the audience to specific locations.

To create a link, right-click the outline of the clickable object, and click "Link."

In the Insert Hyperlink dialog box, click "Place In This Document," choose the landing destination, and click "OK."

What's more, to make it clear that an object is clickable, you can use action buttons. Open the "Insert" tab on the ribbon, click "Shape," and then choose an appropriate action button. Usefully, PPT will automatically prompt you to add a link to these shapes.

You might also want a menu that displays on every slide. Once you have created the menu, add the links using the method outlined above. Then, select all the items, press Ctrl+C (copy), and then use Ctrl+V to paste them in your other slides.

5. Add Clickable Images to Give More Info

Through PowerPoint's animations, you can give your viewer the power to choose what they see and when they see it. This works nicely whether you're planning to send your presentation to others to run through independently or whether you're presenting in front of a group and want your audience to decide which action they want to take.

Start by creating the objects that will be clickable (trigger) and the items that will appear (pop-up).

Then, select all the pop-ups together. When you click "Animations" on the ribbon and choose an appropriate animation for the effect you want to achieve, this will be applied to all objects you have selected.

The next step is to rename the triggers in your presentation. To do this, open the "Home" tab, and in the Editing group, click "Select", and then "Selection Pane."

With the Selection Pane open, select each trigger on your slide individually, and rename them in the Selection Pane, so that they can be easily linked to in the next step.

Finally, go back to the first pop-up. Open the "Animations" tab, and in the Advanced Animation group, click the "Trigger" drop-down arrow. Then, you can set the item to appear when a trigger is clicked in your presentation.

If you want your item to disappear when the trigger is clicked again, select the pop-up, click "Add Animation" in the Advanced Animation group, choose an Exit animation, and follow the same step to link that animation to the trigger button.

6. Add a Countdown Timer

A great way to get your audience to engage with your PPT presentation is to keep them on edge by adding a countdown timer. Whether you're leading a presentation and want to let your audience stop to discuss a topic, or running an online quiz with time-limit questions, having a countdown timer means your audience will keep their eye on your slide throughout.

To do this, you need to animate text boxes or shapes containing your countdown numbers. Choose and format a shape and type the highest number that your countdown clock will need. In our case, we're creating a 10-second timer.

Now, with your shape selected, open the "Animations" tab on the ribbon and click the animation drop-down arrow. Then, in the Exit menu, click "Disappear."

Open the Animation Pane, and click the drop-down arrow next to the animation you've just added. From there, choose "Timing."

Make sure "On Click" is selected in the Start menu, and change the Delay option to "1 second," before clicking "OK."

Then, with this shape still selected, press Ctrl+C (copy), and then Ctrl+V (paste). In the second box, type 9 . With the Animation Pane still open and this second shape selected, click the drop-down arrow and choose "Timing" again. Change the Start option to "After Previous," and make sure the Delay option is 1 second. Then, click "OK."

We can now use this second shape as our template, as when we copy and paste it again, the animations will also duplicate. With this second shape selected, press Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, type 8 into the box, and continue to do the same until you get to 0 .

Next, remove the animations from the "0" box, as you don't want this to disappear. To do this, click the shape, and in the Animation Pane drop-down, click "Remove."

You now need to layer them in order. Right-click the box containing number 1, and click "Bring To Front." You will now see that box on the top. Do the same with the other numbers in ascending order.

Finally, you need to align the objects together. Click anywhere on your slide and press Ctrl+A. Then, in the Home tab on the ribbon, click "Arrange." First click "Align Center," and then bring the menu up again, so that you can click "Align Middle."

Press Ctrl+A again to select your timer, and you can then move your timer or copy and paste it elsewhere.

Press F5 to see the presentation in action, and when you get to the slide containing the timer, click anywhere on the slide to see your countdown timer in action!

Now that your PPT presentation is more interactive, make sure you've avoided these eight common presentational mistakes before you present your slides.

TikTok Tells Advertisers: ‘We Are Not Backing Down’

Hundreds of marketers and ad agency types flocked to TikTok’s annual sales presentation after a new law put its future in question.

  • Share full article

Blake Chandlee, in a white button-down shirt and light blue trousers, speaks into a microphone.

By Sapna Maheshwari

Hundreds of advertisers, including major brands like L’Oreal and Victoria’s Secret, flocked to the Lower East Side on Thursday night for TikTok’s annual spring pitch to marketers. It had been about a week since President Biden signed a law that says TikTok must be sold from its Chinese parent company or face a potential ban, and marketers were champing at the bit to hear TikTok’s thoughts.

They didn’t have to wait long. Blake Chandlee, TikTok’s president of global business solutions, kicked off the evening by thanking advertisers for their “tremendous support and trust” and said the company considered the law unconstitutional and would challenge it in court.

“We believe the facts and the law are clearly on our side and that we will ultimately prevail,” Mr. Chandlee told more than 300 attendees, some of whom couldn’t find chairs in the crowd. “I want you to know we are not backing down.”

But for the rest of the roughly 45-minute presentation, which took place in a large gallery with the fuchsia and light blue lights of TikTok’s logo, it was business as usual. And it was a keen reminder that Madison Avenue’s concerns about TikTok, which center on how to cleverly market their products and ensure that consumers are seeing their ads, are vastly different from those of Washington, where officials consider the app a national security risk.

Sofia Hernandez, TikTok’s global head of business marketing, declared that TikTok had gone from “being viral to vital” for businesses. The company’s executives introduced new tools for running ads against trends and events like the Summer Olympics in Paris. A Unilever marketing executive described how the Vaseline brand had thrived by tapping into a TikTok skin care trend known as “ slugging .” Many marketers were visibly confused until she explained that the term referred to slathering one’s face with petroleum jelly before bedtime to seal in other serums and moisturizers.

“TikTok is the most interesting story in advertising right now,” said Craig Brommers, chief marketing officer of the retailer American Eagle, who attended the event. “That’s why you had a standing-room-only audience waiting to hear what’s next for the most important video platform for Gen Z.”

Near one of the long bars serving “Violet Hour” cocktails and wine, several stations highlighted creators from TikTok niches like sports and luxury. “From boy moms to girl dads, TikTok is for #parents,” one said. The company sent guests home with branded Dagne Dover bags that retail for around $75.

TikTok’s executives reminded advertisers that with 170 million monthly U.S. users, the user base had started to reflect the general population. “We’re not just Gen Z anymore,” said Tim Natividad, TikTok’s U.S. head of enterprise sales.

Advertising is the lifeblood of platforms like TikTok, which has become a core tool for marketers pitching Americans on new makeup, fast-food hacks , music and more. The company appears determined to maintain ad dollars amid its uncertain future, particularly as U.S. tech giants focus on their market share and push short-form video competitors like Google’s YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels.

TikTok and its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, are private and do not publicly disclose their financials. Brian Wieser, an independent ad industry analyst, recently estimated that TikTok brought in $6 billion in U.S. ad sales last year, but said that excluded revenue from e-commerce, tipping and other ventures. In the United States, TikTok users spend 54 minutes per day on the app, while Instagram users spend 35 minutes on that app, with 21 of those minutes devoted to video, according to the data firm eMarketer.

Under the law signed law week, TikTok must be sold from ByteDance within the next nine months. The Biden administration, lawmakers and security experts have said that under TikTok’s current ownership, there are risks that the Chinese government could lean on ByteDance for access to sensitive data on TikTok users or to spread propaganda.

The company has not yet sued to challenge the law.

Last week, after President Biden signed the bill, Michael Beckerman, TikTok’s head of public policy for the Americas, told employees at an all-hands meeting that the situation was “unprecedented” and “very political,” according to an audio recording that was shared with The New York Times.

“We’re sitting between some of the largest geopolitical issues of our time as well as some very, very complicated issues with technology globally, and privacy and all these policy issues,” Mr. Beckerman said in the April 24 meeting.

Mr. Beckerman said he was buoyed by Mr. Biden’s plan to use TikTok in the lead-up to the election. He also said the vote “was not about us” because it passed as part of a broader package of aid for countries like Ukraine and Israel.

“We’re going to win,” he told employees. “We’re optimistic this is not the end of the process.”

Fact Sheet on FTC’s Proposed Final Noncompete Rule

Facebook

  • Competition
  • Office of Policy Planning
  • Bureau of Competition

The following outline provides a high-level overview of the FTC’s proposed final rule :

  • Specifically, the final rule provides that it is an unfair method of competition—and therefore a violation of Section 5 of the FTC Act—for employers to enter into noncompetes with workers after the effective date.
  • Fewer than 1% of workers are estimated to be senior executives under the final rule.
  • Specifically, the final rule defines the term “senior executive” to refer to workers earning more than $151,164 annually who are in a “policy-making position.”
  • Reduced health care costs: $74-$194 billion in reduced spending on physician services over the next decade.
  • New business formation: 2.7% increase in the rate of new firm formation, resulting in over 8,500 additional new businesses created each year.
  • This reflects an estimated increase of about 3,000 to 5,000 new patents in the first year noncompetes are banned, rising to about 30,000-53,000 in the tenth year.
  • This represents an estimated increase of 11-19% annually over a ten-year period.
  • The average worker’s earnings will rise an estimated extra $524 per year.

Monochromatic and comic elements split our gaze at frieze new york.

Elmgreen & Dragset (Scandinavian, est. 1995) ' Social Media (White Poodle)' (2023) Brushed ... [+] stainless steel, lacquer, motor, resin and faux-fur 205.8 cm. (81 in.) MASSIMODECARLO booth, Frieze New York 2024

I suppressed overt laughter as I stopped to shoot a short video of a faux-fur white poodle revolve at a fixed interval on a black and white target merry-go-round, imagining how my rescue pug mixes, Athena and Fresa (both part poodle), would react.

The comic relief was especially welcome at last night’s preview of Frieze as we exited what T. S. Eliot described as the “cruelest month.” Scandinavian artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset draw us out of the drudgery of cyclical seasonal life with their fantastical and waggish Social Media (White Poodle) (2023), the highlight of MASSIMODECARLO booth at Frieze New York .

As Eliot used his seminal poetic masterwork of modernist poetry to navigate the barrenness of life in the wake of World War I amid a clamor of literary, musical, historical, and popular cultural references, Elmgreen & Dragset subvert the quotidian with a jocular critique of contemporary social and political norms.

Another sold-out edition of Frieze New York at The Shed in Manhattan’s hyper-commercial Hudson Yards is on view through May 5, offering a food court tasting of more than 60 galleries from 25 countries taking over column-free galleries with 19-foot-high ceilings soaring from a base of more than 25,000 square feet. Joining world-leading mega-galleries are 11 exhibitors in the Focus Section showcasing solo presentations by emerging or under-appreciated artists.

Apple iPhone 16 New Design And Performance Upgrades Revealed In Leak

Apple confirms widespread iphone changes coming to millions of ipads, 299 tesla model 3 too good lease makes it competitive with honda civic despite lower price.

Pace presents a dual-artist pairing of sculptures from Arlene Shechet ’s Relatives series with new paintings by Robert Mangold, ahead of Girl Group , a major solo debut of six new large-scale commissions by Shechet opening at Storm King Art Center in New York this weekend. Works by Adam Pendleton, Tara Donovan, and Huong Dodinh will be on view at Pace’s Chelsea flagship during the fair.

Shechet’s work pushes beyond monochromatic to celebrate the essence of geometry, line, color, and space in two- and three-dimensional mediums.Yet her singular abstraction marries with Mangold’s single pop of color to mingle, divide, and layer the viewer’s inquiry into the conflation of interior and exterior worlds and the fragments that marry to make a whole.

Nearly all of Shechet’s works sold at yesterday’s preview, and one work remains on hold for a U.S. museum. The majority of the Mangold paintings at the booth found buyers yesterday, including some first-time collectors for the artist.

Installation view of solo presentation by Korean artist Lee Bae at Frieze new York

Perrotin also reported robust interest from collectors at the preview showing, including a solo presentation by Korean artist Lee Bae (which sold out today) ahead of his exhibition at Perrotin’s Lower East Side gallery in September, as well as artists who have concurrent exhibitions at Perrotin New York.

Revel in the wrangling of gestural simplicity and textural complexity of Issu du Feu, born of a meticulous process of sanding and polishing charcoal shards, which reflect light to build nuanced depth of blacks and greys. The Korean artist’s Brushstroke series, painted with diluted charcoal ink, feature a complementary interpretation of the material, as inky gestures demand a close look at the intricacies of the canvas.

The Perrotin booth also highlights artists with concurrent or upcoming exhibitions at Perrotin New York, including: Vivian Greven’s first solo exhibition in the U.S.; Hans Hartung’s participation in the historical show, The New School of Paris Through Its Pioneering Women (1945 - 1964) , amplifying unacknowledged women gallery directors and critics who played a pivotal role in the post-war movement; and Johan Creten’s New York opening in June.

Press Release

Amd reports first quarter 2024 financial results, related documents.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 30, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) today announced revenue for the first quarter of 2024 of $5.5 billion, gross margin of 47%, operating income of $36 million, net income of $123 million and diluted earnings per share of $0.07. On a non-GAAP ( *) basis, gross margin was 52%, operating income was $1.1 billion, net income was $1.0 billion and diluted earnings per share was $0.62.

“We delivered strong first quarter results with our Data Center and Client segments each growing more than 80% year-over-year driven by the ramp of MI300 AI accelerator shipments and the adoption of our Ryzen and EPYC processors,” said AMD Chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su. “This is an incredibly exciting time for the industry as widespread deployment of AI is driving demand for significantly more compute across a broad range of markets. We are executing very well as we ramp our data center business and enable AI capabilities across our product portfolio.”

“AMD started the year strong, delivering record quarterly Data Center segment revenue,” said AMD EVP, CFO and Treasurer Jean Hu. “In addition, we drove solid gross margin expansion. Moving forward, we are well positioned to continue driving revenue growth and margin improvement while investing in the large AI opportunities ahead.”

GAAP Quarterly Financial Results

Non-GAAP(*) Quarterly Financial Results

Segment Summary

Revenue increased 2% sequentially driven by the first full quarter of AMD Instinct GPU sales, partially offset by a seasonal decline in server CPU sales.
  • Client segment revenue was $1.4 billion, up 85% year-over-year driven primarily by AMD Ryzen™ 8000 Series processor sales. Revenue decreased 6% sequentially.
  • Gaming segment revenue was $922 million, down 48% year-over-year and 33% sequentially due to a decrease in semi-custom revenue and lower AMD Radeon™ GPU sales.
  • Embedded segment revenue was $846 million, down 46% year-over-year and 20% sequentially as customers continued to manage their inventory levels.
