5 ways Google Assistant can help with homework

Take the headache out of homework with these tips.

homework help by google

I don't know how many times my teen has asked me a question about a topic I know nothing about during homework time and I've told her to Google it. It actually isn't bad advice.

Turns out, Google Assistant can help with a wide range of homework problems that hassle kids and parents every evening. These tips will make homework easier for everyone using Google Assistant.

Set study timers

Studies show that frequent breaks during tasks can lead to better concentration and higher productivity . To make pacing your child's study time easier, you can schedule homework breaks using Google Assistant's timer feature.

To set up a study timer, say, "OK Google, set my homework timer." Google will create a timer named My Homework and will ask you how long you want the timer to last. Once it gets your command, the timer will start counting down. Then let your kid know that when the timer goes off, it's break time.

Set reminders

If your child is really bad about remembering when to study for tests, set up reminders using Google Assistant. To either the Google Assistant app or a Google Home speaker say, "OK Google, set a reminder." Then, just answer the assistant's questions to save the reminder.

At the beginning of study time ask, "Hey Google, what are my reminders?" to know exactly what needs to be studied that evening.

Foreign language classes can be tricky to study for, especially when mom or dad doesn't know the language. While it's not great at translating complicated sentences yet, Google Assistant can help with rudimentary questions like:

  • Hey Google, what is the Spanish word for bathroom?
  • OK Google, what does "n'est-ce pas" mean?
  • Hey Google, how do you say milk in Russian?

Use it as a calculator

Have you ever checked your child's math homework and had no idea if the answer is correct? I've been there, too. Thankfully, Google has equation solving abilities.

For example, you can ask, "OK Google, what is pi times 49 squared?" Google Assistant will answer back, "The answer is 7,542.96."

Learn how to solve problems

Google Assistant can also teach you and your child how to solve math problems. For example, I've asked it, "Hey Google, how do you solve an algebraic equation with a fraction in it?"

For complicated processes like these, Google will search for a good YouTube video on the subject and will bring it up on devices with a screen, like Google Home Hub , Lenovo Smart Display or your phone.

Google Lens Can Now Help With Math and Science Problems

Google Lens homework help is here and it's a game-changer when you want to solve math and science problems.

Google is looking to help children and parents get ready for a whole new form of school when education resumes in the coming months. The company announced a slew of new educational tools and features on The Keyword .

While all the changes seem useful, the one that really stands out from the crowd is the update to Google Lens. It was already a useful tool, but Google is adding a new feature that will allow it to help with solving difficult math and science questions.

Google Lens Homework Help

The new Google Lens feature uses Socratic to allow students or parents to take a photo of a difficult problem and get help.

It's not just a tool that provides you with the answer, either (though it does give you the answer in the end). Instead, Google Lens and Socratic will provide step-by-step instructions to solve the problem. It'll also show helpful explainers that will help the student actually learn to solve the math or science equation. After all, the point isn't just to find out the answer, but to understand how to reach it yourself.

Google Lens is an awesome visual search tool that's becoming more useful as the company introduces new functionality to it. With this new homework feature, not only does it function as a cool way to find information, but it could be a game-changer for kids who struggle with difficult math problems.

For science, Google Lens will show graphics and explanations of the concept you're struggling with when it scans a question.

How to Use Google Lens for Homework Help

The feature is incredibly easy to use. To start with, you need to tap the graduation cap within Google Lens. From there, it'll prompt you to take a photo of the problem you need help with. Google Lens will highlight all of the equations or questions it sees, and you tap the one you're stuck on . Next, you'll have the option to copy the text, send it to your computer via Chrome, or edit the math equation.

Below those options is a Steps to Solve area. You can use this to learn how to solve the problem and ultimately find the answer to the question. This same method applies to both math and science questions, though the type of results will vary.

Google Lens adding ‘Homework’ filter for solving math equations, science problems

Avatar for Abner Li

For the past several weeks, we’ve been tracking a math solver for Google’s visual search tool. Today, the Google Lens “Homework” filter was officially detailed and it covers more than just equations.

“Homework” features a graduation cap icon and prompts you “to take a photo of a homework question.” The viewfinder is even rectangular (versus square) and thus better suited for framing math problems and long questions.

After tapping the capture button, Google Lens will highlight all the equations or questions in view. Selecting one will pull up a sheet with options to copy the text, send to your compute r via Chrome, or edit the math equation.

A “Steps to solve” card presents several options: Overview, Solve using quadratic formula, Solve by Factoring. Users are then presented with a step-by-step breakdown and the answer.

homework help by google

When pointing at a science question, the Google Lens Homework filter can surface Knowledge Panel cards with graphics and explanations of the underlying concept. There’s also information about other key concepts and similar problems. Google says these features “help improve comprehension and understanding of core topics.”

These guides will also appear in Search, while Android, iOS, and the mobile web will surface 3D content related to almost 100 STEM concepts across biology and chemistry.

The Lens problem solver is also available in and powered by the dedicated Socratic app aimed at high school and college students. Google purchased the app last August and relaunched it in February.

Listen: we know homework isn’t fun, but it is a good way to reinforce the ideas and concepts you’ve learned in class. But what if you’re really struggling with your homework assignments?

If you’ve looked online for a little extra help with your take-home assignments, you’ve probably stumbled across websites claiming to provide the homework help and answers students need to succeed . But can homework help sites really make a difference? And if so, which are the best homework help websites you can use?

Below, we answer these questions and more about homework help websites–free and paid. We’ll go over:

  • The basics of homework help websites
  • The cost of homework help websites
  • The five best homework websites out there
  • The pros and cons of using these websites for homework help
  • The line between “learning” and “cheating” when using online homework help
  • Tips for getting the most out of a homework help website

So let’s get started!

The Basics About Homework Help Websites–Free and Paid

Homework help websites are designed to help you complete your homework assignments, plain and simple.

What Makes a Homework Help Site Worth Using

Most of the best sites allow users to ask questions and then provide an answer (or multiple possible answers) and explanation in seconds. In some instances, you can even send a photo of a particular assignment or problem instead of typing the whole thing out!

Homework help sites also offer more than just help answering homework questions. Common services provided are Q&A with experts, educational videos, lectures, practice tests and quizzes, learning modules, math solving tools, and proofreading help. Homework help sites can also provide textbook solutions (i.e. answers to problems in tons of different textbooks your school might be using), one-on-one tutoring, and peer-to-peer platforms that allow you to discuss subjects you’re learning about with your fellow students.

And best of all, nearly all of them offer their services 24/7, including tutoring!

What You Should Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of scam sites out there willing to prey on desperate students. Before you sign up for any service, make sure you read reviews to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

A word to the wise: the more a company advertises help that veers into the territory of cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. The best homework help websites are going to help you learn the concepts you’ll need to successfully complete your homework on your own. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” a little later!)

body-gold-piggy-bank-money

You don't need a golden piggy bank to use homework help websites. Some provide low or no cost help for students like you!

How Expensive Are the Best Homework Help Websites?

First of all, just because a homework help site costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. Likewise, just because a homework help website is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best websites, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

When it comes to paid homework help services, the prices vary pretty widely depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to $150 dollars per month, with the most expensive services offering several hours of one-on-one tutoring with a subject expert per month.

The 5 Best Homework Help Websites

So, what is the best homework help website you can use? The answer is that it depends on what you need help with.

The best homework help websites are the ones that are reliable and help you learn the material. They don’t just provide answers to homework questions–they actually help you learn the material.

That’s why we’ve broken down our favorite websites into categories based on who they’re best for . For instance, the best website for people struggling with math might not work for someone who needs a little extra help with science, and vice versa.

Keep reading to find the best homework help website for you!

Best Free Homework Help Site: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

Not only is Khan Academy free, but it’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your needs. When you set up your account , you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help sites, including several AP classes.

Runner Up: Brainly.com offers a free service that allows you to type in questions and get answers and explanations from experts. The downside is that you’re limited to two answers per question and have to watch ads.

Best Paid Homework Help Site: Chegg

  • Price: $14.95 to $19.95 per month
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

This service has three main parts . The first is Chegg Study, which includes textbook solutions, Q&A with subject experts, flashcards, video explanations, a math solver, and writing help. The resources are thorough, and reviewers state that Chegg answers homework questions quickly and accurately no matter when you submit them.

Chegg also offers textbook rentals for students who need access to textbooks outside of their classroom. Finally, Chegg offers Internship and Career Advice for students who are preparing to graduate and may need a little extra help with the transition out of high school.

Another great feature Chegg provides is a selection of free articles geared towards helping with general life skills, like coping with stress and saving money. Chegg’s learning modules are comprehensive, and they feature solutions to the problems in tons of different textbooks in a wide variety of subjects.

Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best Site for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Runner Up: KhanAcademy offers in-depth tutorials that cover complex math topics for free, but you won’t get the same tailored help (and answers!) that Photomath offers.

Best Site for English Homework Help: Princeton Review Academic Tutoring

  • Price: $40 to $153 per month, depending on how many hours of tutoring you want
  • Best for: Comprehensive and personalized reading and writing help

While sites like Grammarly and Sparknotes help you by either proofreading what you write via an algorithm or providing book summaries, Princeton Review’s tutors provide in-depth help with vocabulary, literature, essay writing and development, proofreading, and reading comprehension. And unlike other services, you’ll have the chance to work with a real person to get help.

The best part is that you can get on-demand English (and ESL) tutoring from experts 24/7. That means you can get help whenever you need it, even if you’re pulling an all-nighter!

This is by far the most expensive homework site on this list, so you’ll need to really think about what you need out of a homework help website before you commit. One added benefit is that the subscription covers over 80 other subjects, including AP classes, which can make it a good value if you need lots of help!

body-studtypool-logo

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

  • Best for: Science homework help
  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Sites?

Homework help websites can be a great resource if you’re struggling in a subject, or even if you just want to make sure that you’re really learning and understanding topics and ideas that you’re interested in. But, there are some possible drawbacks if you don’t use these sites responsibly.

We’ll go over the good–and the not-so-good–aspects of getting online homework help below.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Websites

First, let’s take a look at the benefits.

#1: Better Grades Beyond Homework

This is a big one! Getting outside help with your studies can improve your understanding of concepts that you’re learning, which translates into better grades when you take tests or write essays.

Remember: homework is designed to help reinforce the concepts you learned in class. If you just get easy answers without learning the material behind the problems, you may not have the tools you need to be successful on your class exams…or even standardized tests you’ll need to take for college.

#2: Convenience

One of the main reasons that online homework help is appealing is because it’s flexible and convenient. You don’t have to go to a specific tutoring center while they’re open or stay after school to speak with your teacher. Instead, you can access helpful resources wherever you can access the internet, whenever you need them.

This is especially true if you tend to study at off hours because of your extracurriculars, work schedule, or family obligations. Sites that offer 24/7 tutoring can give you the extra help you need if you can’t access the free resources that are available at your school.

#3: Variety

Not everyone learns the same way. Maybe you’re more of a visual learner, but your teacher mostly does lectures. Or maybe you learn best by listening and taking notes, but you’re expected to learn something just from reading the textbook .

One of the best things about online homework help is that it comes in a variety of forms. The best homework help sites offer resources for all types of learners, including videos, practice activities, and even one-on-one discussions with real-life experts.

This variety can also be a good thing if you just don’t really resonate with the way a concept is being explained (looking at you, math textbooks!).

body_stophand

Not so fast. There are cons to homework help websites, too. Get to know them below!

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Websites

Now, let’s take a look at the drawbacks of online homework help.

#1: Unreliable Info

This can be a real problem. In addition to all the really good homework help sites, there are a whole lot of disreputable or unreliable sites out there. The fact of the matter is that some homework help sites don’t necessarily hire people who are experts in the subjects they’re talking about. In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students…or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option.

#2: No Clarification

This depends on the service you use, of course. But the majority of them provide free or low-cost help through pre-recorded videos. Watching videos or reading info online can definitely help you with your homework… but you can’t ask questions or get immediate feedback if you need it .

#3: Potential For Scamming

Like we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of homework help websites out there, and lots of them are scams. The review comments we read covered everything from outdated or wrong information, to misleading claims about the help provided, to not allowing people to cancel their service after signing up.

No matter which site you choose to use, make sure you research and read reviews before you sign up–especially if it’s a paid service!

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

Admittedly, whether using homework help websites constitutes cheating is a bit of a grey area. For instance, is it “help” when a friend reads your essay for history class and corrects your grammar, or is it “cheating”? The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” When in doubt, it can be a good idea to check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get.

That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if a service answers questions or writes essays for you, there’s a good chance using it constitutes cheating.

Here’s an example that might help clarify the difference for you. Brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also help, provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” The same is true for other subjects. Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help Websites for You

Now that you know some of our favorite homework help websites, free and paid, you can start doing some additional research on your own to decide which services might work best for you! Here are some top tips for choosing a homework help website.

Tip 1: Decide How You Learn Best

Before you decide which site or sites you’re going to use for homework help, y ou should figure out what kind of learning style works for you the most. Are you a visual learner? Then choose a site that uses lots of videos to help explain concepts. If you know you learn best by actually doing tasks, choose a site that provides lots of practice exercises.

Tip 2: Determine Which Subjects You Need Help With

Just because a homework help site is good overall doesn’t mean that it’s equally good for every subject. If you only need help in math, choose a site that specializes in that area. But if history is where you’re struggling, a site that specializes in math won’t be much help. So make sure to choose a site that you know provides high-quality help in the areas you need it most.

Tip 3: Decide How Much One-On-One Help You Need

This is really about cost-effectiveness. If you learn well on your own by reading and watching videos, a free site like Khan Academy is a good choice. But if you need actual tutoring, or to be able to ask questions and get personalized answers from experts, a paid site that provides that kind of service may be a better option.

Tip 4: Set a Budget

If you decide you want to go with a paid homework help website, set a budget first . The prices for sites vary wildly, and the cost to use them can add up quick.

Tip 5: Read the Reviews

Finally, it’s always a good idea to read actual reviews written by the people using these homework sites. You’ll learn the good, the bad, and the ugly of what the users’ experiences have been. This is especially true if you intend to subscribe to a paid service. You’ll want to make sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

The Best Sims 4 Mods That Improve Child Gameplay

Children are a core part of The Sims 4 , yet the things that the player can do with them aren't as varied as one could think. The game has many strong points, but its long-time players have discovered that there are some aspects in which it could improve. For example, the children's school life and aspirations are limited to a certain degree.

The Sims 4: How to Find Lost Homework

Luckily, plenty of creative players have come up with mods that solve this problem and offer richer, more realistic child gameplay. From new school interactions to updated personality traits to a larger selection of hobbies, these mods help significantly improve child gameplay in The Sims 4 . Players who love the various stages of life but want this gameplay to be more fleshed-out can achieve the same, with the toddler and child stages being enhanced significantly with these TS4 child gameplay mods .

Updated on April 25, 2024, by Taylor Pittman: Almost anything is possible in The Sims 4, but there are definitely areas in which the game can be expanded. Luckily, a large mod community takes the time to create mods that add gameplay, items, and UI modifications for free. Children in The Sims 4 could use more gameplay surrounding them. Players who enjoy family dynamics may be disappointed with some classic activities and social interactions for kids missing. So, this list has been updated to include more mods that improve child gameplay in The Sims 4 .

Kids Can Paint

Create masterpieces from a young age.

  • Cepzid Creation

The Sims 4 has several features that weren't available in previous titles. On the other hand, it's missing things that may seem surprising. For example, while children could paint in The Sims 3 , it's not possible in TS4. This is remedied with Cepzid's Kids Can Paint mod. Children have the same access to easel sizes and picture types as adult Sims.

Children can show off their painting skills and create custom artwork that their parents can sell or hang up. This is a great way to have kids help with earning money if simoleons are running low. It is a great way for children to practice their creativity, and players can live out their artsy child protégé storylines.

Run a Lemonade Stand or Bake Sale

Earn spending money as a kid.

Children in The Sims 4 have limited after-school activities outside school clubs and the Scouts. They are also unable to get part-time jobs if players want them to "have their own money." However, running lemonade stands or selling baked goods are something kids do all the time in the real world.

Cepzid created a mod that allows kids to tend to a stand and sell lemonade or cakes to Sims on the lot. An adult or child can tend to the stand. Each stand has a list of flavors depending on what they sell. Children can run their own business and get some extra simoleons for the household.

Create a Chore Schedule

  • LittleMsSam

Children need a lot of time for learning, playing, and making friends but sometimes they have to do things they may not find as fun. Household chores are part of life regardless of age, but they are a good way to teach responsibility and help parents with some household tasks. Players with Parenthood can have their parent Sims tell their kids to do things like clean up, make the table, or do their homework.

Having to physically command your Sims to do this every time gets tiresome, but LittleMsSam created a mod that has children do chores automatically using a schedule. Sims can set a chore schedule using a calendar from Parenthood or Discover University . They can assign cleaning duty hours or days ahead of time with the mod.

Get More Children's Social Interactions

The interactions that a child has in The Sims 4 have increased quite a bit since the early days of the game when the toddler phase wasn't even a part of the game. EA has addressed many complaints with this game , but there are still some people who feel that children don't really have too many interactions to mess around with in the game, which doesn't really feel all that great to mess around with.

Thankfully, modders have picked up the slack and added their fair share of unique and custom interactions into the game to make it easier for players to enjoy this phase of a Sim's life. The Child Life mod does exactly that and allows players to help these children feel more lifelike and engaging, talking about stuff and engaging in activities that are appropriate for someone their age.

Homework Tweaks

Do homework faster.

Homework is a crucial part of any child's life, with these Sims needing to do well in school by completing their homework regularly and improving their grades. Failing to do so can lead to a poor graduation that doesn't really benefit a developing Sim in any way and can actively hamper their development in the long run.

The Sims 4: How To Make Money (Without Resorting To Cheats)

However, homework is always a chore, and The Sims 4 is no exception to this golden rule. Watching a child sit down and do homework for hours on end as their needs become critical is never fun, and players would ideally like a way to improve their time management by letting children do their homework faster and more efficiently. The Faster Homework mod achieves precisely this task, allowing children to focus their task on more fun activities that players can actually be invested in.

Kiddoddle Job Listings

Odd jobs for children.

Childhood is a time for less work and more play, but every now and then kids want a chance to get some cash. ItsKatato's Kiddoodle Job Listings is a career mod that allows child Sims to take on odd jobs. The odd jobs require the Island Living Expansion Pack to work properly because it uses the same system.

Odd jobs that kids can do include easy things like babysitting, dog walking, mowing lawns, phone repair, and more. The jobs available depend on the child's skills. There are also two versions of the mod: low pay rates for authenticity or high pay rates if players want their kids to bring in big bucks.

Teens and Children Can Cash In On Allowance

To get kids used to money management, some families might put into place an allowance system. This is also possible in The Sims 4 thanks to this Allowance mod . Players can have the household family kids receive a weekly allowance of a specific amount.

Better yet, the allowance will be dependent on how well the child is doing at school and if they're showing good behavior. The allowance is stored in a separate money account, which further increases immersion for this mod.

Spend The Weekend With

Children can visit their relatives.

Those playing a legacy might like the idea of sending their household children out for the weekend to visit grandparents for instance. However, playing this out separately doesn't really have the same effect, since it forces players to actually play out the weekend away as a child, which gets tedious.

This mod lets players simply summon a family member, or anyone really, to pick up someone from the household. They can then stay indefinitely and will be added to that household's roster until they return. It's definitely a great gameplay mod for children in The Sims 4 for those who want to focus on other household members for a bit.

Adult Skills For Kids

Children can learn more skills.

There are a ton of skills that kids on The Sims 4 simply don't have access to until they age up. This isn't realistic, however, since many of these "adult" skills like fishing are actually very doable for children to learn in real life.

The Sims 4: Growing Together - Infant Quirks and Their Effects

The Adult Skills For Kids mod fixes this oversight in the game. This gameplay mod for children in The Sims 4 allows kids to access any adult skills, while also developing the unique child skills in the game. Learning instruments, writing, video gaming, and even robotics, are now completely possible for children, too.

Foster Family

Become a foster parent.

One thing that's lackluster in The Sims 4 is the variety in the types of families players can have. Foster families are simply not a thing in the game unless players simulate it using the adoption system.

The Foster Family mod allows players to foster not just toddlers and children, but pets as well. It's a fantastic and pretty immersive and storytelling-friendly mod for players who want to play out those foster family stories in a realistic manner.

Grow Up Aspiration

Parent influence will affect children.

A lot of people might not know what they want to focus on in their future when they're still children. That's why the aspirations for children in The Sims 4 can feel a bit narrow and limiting. They usually focus on developing one skill, such as artistic abilities or athleticism. The Grow Up aspiration mod fixes this.

If the player gives this aspiration to a child Sim, they will be asked to develop multiple skills instead of just a single one. What's more, they even get valuable aspiration points for doing their homework, which always comes in handy.

Spellcaster Child Can Use Magic

Child no longer have to wait to cast spells.

For The Sims 4 players who love Harry Potter and want to have their own child wizard, this mod gives them the opportunity to achieve it. Under normal circumstances, children can't use magic in the game, even when they're spellcasters just like their parents. They have to wait until their teen years, and only then can they start using magic.

Project Rene Can Make Up for What The Sims 4 Lacks in Occults

This gameplay mod for children in The Sims 4 allows the children to use magic as well. They can't do every single thing that adult spellcasters are capable of , but the range of their powers is still wide enough to make for fun gameplay with the young wizards.

Random Traits And Aspirations

Leave traits up to chance.

In the game, the players choose what aspirations and character traits children will have when they age up from toddlers to kids. But those players who would like to randomize the process can use this mod.

The child will get randomly chosen traits as well as a random aspiration. As a result, the child may be very different from their parents, which will lead to some interesting interactions. This mod also adds more realism to the game since, in real life, parents don't get to choose what their children will be like and what they will want to do.

Sleepover Event

Host friends for a slumber party.

A lot of children love having sleepovers with their friends. Unfortunately, The Sims 4 base game didn't include this event, but a mod added it in. It allows the children to organize a new event: a sleepover with their friends. It not only allows kids to have more fun but also to build better friendships with other children. Players get a similar Slumber Party event if they have the Growing Together Expansion pack.

It's a valuable integration that will allow players to help their children form great memories with their friends. After all, what Simmer hasn't been a part of a sleepover where they've goofed around with their friends and talked at length about a variety of topics? This mod just aims to bring that experience into The Sims 4 base game and does so pretty effectively.

Children Can Walk Dogs

Cute interactions between kids and dogs.

Taking care of a pet as a young child is a good way to learn some more responsibilities. Yet The Sims 4 doesn't allow children to walk their family dogs. A mod exists that gives children the option to walk their dogs .

The Sims 4: Growing Together: Midlife Crisis Guide

Walking dogs helps build the relationship between the child and their pet. It also gives parents some extra alone time, as they might appreciate the fact that their kid is helping them to take care of their family dog. It also helps that children get additional responsibility points for walking their dogs.

Education System Bundle

Add homeschooling and more.

  • KawaiiStacie

Going to school can be amazing, but it's not for everyone. Not every child feels challenged in school or can find friends easily. This mod takes this into consideration and allows both children and teenagers to be homeschooled instead.

This will give the family the chance to design their own schedule to a certain degree. It also means the child will be much more physically present in the household than before. As a result, the player will get the chance to enjoy playing with the young Sim's character more.

Dean, Jayapal Urge Administration to Help Prevent Assault on Rafah

May 1 , 2024.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Madeleine Dean (PA-04) and Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) led a letter to the Biden Administration to use all tools possible to dissuade the Israeli government from moving forward with an offensive invasion into Rafah. The letter was also signed by  55 additional Members.

“We write with urgency to say: an offensive invasion into Rafah by Israel in the upcoming days is wholly unacceptable,”  the Members wrote. “Despite [...] dire circumstances, the Israeli government is reportedly on the verge of a full-scale offensive on Rafah. An Israeli offensive in Rafah risks the start of yet another escalatory spiral, immediately putting the region back on the brink of a broader war that neither Israel nor the United States can afford.”

Before the horrific October 7th terrorist attacks by Hamas on Israel, 280,000 Palestinians lived in Rafah. Now roughly 1.4 million people are sheltering in Rafah after being displaced. This overcrowding has caused further suffering through scarcity of food, water, and medicine.

“We urge you to invoke existing law and policy to immediately withhold certain offensive military aid to the Israeli government, including aid sourced from legislation already signed into law, in order to preempt a full-scale assault on Rafah,” the Members continued. “If the Israeli government will not uphold international law and protect civilians, then the United States must act to protect innocent life. We urge you to continue your work toward achieving a lasting ceasefire that will bring hostages home and build a path toward safety and security for all.”

The letter was also signed by Becca Balint (VT-At Large), Nanette Barragán (CA-44), Donald S. Beyer Jr. (VA-08), Earl Blumenauer (OR-03), Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01), Jamaal Bowman (NY-16), Cori Bush (MO-01), André Carson (IN-07), Greg Casar (TX-35), Joaquin Castro (TX-20), Judy Chu (CA-28), Gerald Connolly (VA-11), Joe Courtney (CT-02), Jasmine Crockett (TX-30), Danny K. NASA's Roman Space Telescope Could Help Researchers Detect the Universe’s First Stars

An illustration of a star being torn apart by a black hole. To the right of center, there is a black sphere representing a black hole, surrounded by many thick wisps of light. To the left of it, there is a fuzzy, bright white object representing a star. The star has a tail of gas coming off its right, which is brightest near the star, but becomes grayer further away. This tail flows into the black hole’s right side and swirls around the black hole in a horizontal disk. The disk is thicker toward its center and more diffuse farther away. Material in the disk also appears to wrap around the top of the black hole. Above and below the black hole, there are purple rays of light that extend upward and downward in two broad cones. This scene sits amid a black backdrop of space with many dim, white stars in the background.

Tidal disruption events offer an opportunity to locate the elusive stars.

The universe’s earliest stars, known as Population III stars, are notoriously hard to detect with even our most powerful observatories due to their great distance and short lifetime. However, using the wide field of view and rapid survey speed of NASA’s upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, astronomers hope to spot dozens of them as they are shredded by massive black holes.

Full Article

Tidal Disruption of a Star (Artist’s Concept)

The first stars to form in the universe were very different from our Sun. Known to astronomers (somewhat paradoxically) as Population III, or Pop III, stars, they were made almost entirely of hydrogen and helium. They are believed to have been much larger, hotter, and more massive than our Sun. As a result, Pop III stars use their fuel more quickly and have shorter lifespans.

Pop III stars, which came about in the first few hundred million years after the big bang, are crucial in understanding the development of the universe. These stars were the nuclear furnaces where the first elements heavier than helium, which astronomers call metals, were generated, and ultimately are the reason for the complex systems of galaxies in the current universe.

No Pop III stars are found around us today, so to learn about them we must look back to the early universe. NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will provide a panoramic field of view 200 times larger than the infrared view of the sky from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope and survey the sky 1,000 times faster. As a result, Roman may be a key tool for helping astronomers see this rare first generation of stars after it launches by May 2027.

Shredded Stars

The new approach will not seek intact stars. Instead, astronomers will hunt for signs of Pop III stars that have been shredded by black holes, creating a bright and energetic phenomenon known as a tidal disruption event (TDE).

If a star moves close enough to a black hole, the star will experience gravitational tides strong enough to completely disrupt it. Some of the material from the disrupted star then collects into an accretion disk, where complex physical processes cause it to glow brightly enough to be seen from billions of light-years away.

"Since we know that black holes likely exist at these early epochs , catching them as they’re devouring these first stars might offer us the best shot to indirectly detect Pop III stars," noted Priyamvada Natarajan of Yale University, a co-author of the study.

TDEs generate light in many wavelengths, including X-ray, radio, ultraviolet (UV), and optical light. The further we look into the early universe, where these early stars primarily reside, the more the optical and UV light is redshifted , or stretched by the expanding universe, into near-infrared wavelengths visible to Roman.

Not only does the wavelength of light stretch – so does the observed timescale of the TDE. Like an exploding star or supernova, a TDE is a transient event that increases quickly in brightness and then gradually decreases over time. But due to the large redshift of these events, a Pop III TDE would brighten over the course of hundreds to thousands of days, while its decline would last more than a decade.

“The evolution timescales of Pop III TDEs are very long, which is one feature that could distinguish a Pop III TDE from other transients including supernovas and TDEs of current-generation stars like our Sun,” said Rudrani Kar Chowdhury, postdoctoral fellow of the University of Hong Kong and first author of the study.

“Since they last for a longer time, a Pop III TDE might be easier to detect, but it might be harder to identify as a transient,” added co-author Jane Dai, professor of astrophysics at the University of Hong Kong. “Scientists would need to design the right survey strategy.”

A Coordinated Hunt

While NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope is powerful enough to detect and study TDEs in the early universe, its field of view is too small to make it an efficient TDE hunter. Of Roman’s core community surveys , the most promising for finding TDEs is the High Latitude Wide Area survey, which aims to cover approximately 2,000 square degrees of the sky outside of the plane of our galaxy.

“Roman can go very deep and yet cover a very big area of the sky. That's what's needed to detect a meaningful sample of these TDEs,” said Dai.

Webb would be useful for follow-up observations, however, particularly with its suite of spectroscopic tools. Once Roman detects these TDEs, Webb’s instruments could identify if any metals are present.

“Since these stars are only made up of hydrogen and helium, we will not see any metal lines in the spectrum of objects, whereas in the spectra of TDEs from regular stars we can see various metal lines,” Kar Chowdhury noted.

With this proposed strategy for identifying Pop III stars, there’s an opportunity to explore more of the universe’s mysteries, opening up numerous opportunities to better understand not only the early universe, but also galaxies closer to home.

This research has been published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters .

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is managed at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, with participation by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Caltech/IPAC in Southern California, the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, and a science team comprising scientists from various research institutions. The primary industrial partners are BAE Systems, Inc. in Boulder, Colorado; L3Harris Technologies in Melbourne, Florida; and Teledyne Scientific & Imaging in Thousand Oaks, California.
