Psychology Library Research: Basic Article Search

Where to start.

In many of your courses you will be asked to support your assignments and discussions with scholarly, peer-reviewed literature. These types of research articles are mostly available only in library databases.

Below is an example of a search in the psychology database APA PsycINFO which is a good place to consider starting much of your pyschology-related research. You can use this as a guide when searching for other scholarly, peer-reviewed articles.

  • Quick Answer: What is peer review?
  • Library databases overview

Select keywords

First, make a list of the main ideas in your assignment and then brainstorm synonyms and related concepts. These will be the keywords you'll use to search the database.

Example assignment: How can stereotypes influence close relationships ?

Stereotypes and close relationships are the two main ideas. Since close relationships can mean many things, we chose to focus on romantic relationships and brainstormed the specific terms marriage and dating .

  • Stereotypes
  • Database Search Skills: Decide on a Topic
  • Database Search Skills: Select Keywords

Choose a database

Next, choose a database that will allow you to search your topic in the scholarly literature in the field of psychology.

On the  Library homepage , go to the Research by Subject  box. This is where all the Library's materials are arranged by subject.

Research by Subject button

Use the drop-down menu to choose  Psychology . Choose a different subject if your topic is related to a different subject area.

Now you are on the Psychology Research Page. This is where you can browse all of the Library's psychology materials. Click on the  Psychology databases  drop-down menu and choose  APA PsycINFO . You may need to log in with your Walden e-mail address and password.

Set up your search

Now we are on the database's main search page with three search boxes where we'll set up our search.

Enter one idea/concept in each search box.

Click the  Search  button.

About this search

It's important to understand how this search is structured and the type of results it will return. First, all the results will be full text articles that you can read right away. They'll also be articles from peer-reviewed journals.

Second, this is how you read the search boxes:

  • search for articles that are about  stereotypes
  • AND (the drop-down menu next to the second search box)
  • articles that are also about at least one of these concepts: marriage OR dating  (that's what the OR inside the search box means)
  • Database Search Skills: Set Up Your Search
  • Database Search Skills: Connect Keywords
  • Database Search Skills: Basic Search Limiters

Get the full text

A well structured search will generally return about 100-200 results. If you have more than that, consider modifying your search. When evaluating search results, keep in mind that often a single article will only answer part of your assignment. It's not unusual to have to synthesize information from multiple articles.

  • To read the article's abstract, click on the  article title or magnifying glass icon after the article title .

CSN Library Services

Get the facts, psychology assignments 101.

Research assignments for CSN psychology classes can be among the most varied and challenging you will encounter. For certain class assignments your instructor will ask you to locate empirical research to help you examine a specific assigned topic. You may have to examine peer-reviewed journals. Occasionally, you are asked to select your own topic based on something you care about. You may have to prepare an oral presentation in addition to the paper. You may have a group project component to the assignment – or some combination of all of the above. It is always a good idea to start by first carefully reading your assignment and ask what exactly does my instructor want? How long does the paper or presentation have to be? What types of resources are required or permitted. Do you need books, peer-reviewed journals, DSM-5 , free-web sources? Is there a date range for acceptable resources? What are your due dates? Are there multiple due dates for the different components of the assignment? Is a draft expected? Be sure to ask your instructor if you are unsure of anything in the assignment. Most important – start preparing early in the semester!

If you have a group project, you should all take time to organize goals and tasks. Appoint a group leader. Exchange contact information, review due dates, create a calendar, and find an online workspace. For oral presentations, prepare visual aids in advance and rehearse for timing. You will also want to gather your APA information and review the title, pagination, in-text, and reference page formats.

Investigate

In psychology, ongoing research accomplished by behavioral scientists establishes valid scientific conclusions or claims. As part of the psychological research process, scientists in the field carefully evaluate the methods, evidence, and resulting conclusions reported. The research is then accepted or rejected – along with any claims made. It is only after this rigorous process that academic or professional journals publish certain research reports. These authoritative published research reports should form the core of your research investigations for most assignments. Additionally, you may need to use the DSM-5 , the cornerstone of diagnostic classification in mental health, to locate professional definitions of specific disorders and current treatments. Your best bets for basic psychology research include:

  • ProQuest Central – An interdisciplinary collection of full-text articles from outstanding academic/professional journals. APA citations are available for every article in ProQuest . Be sure to filter for date range. While especially strong in the behavioral sciences, the interdisciplinary selection of scholarly articles found in ProQuest can also offer new ways of seeing problems, ideas or theories in other related fields.
  • PsycARTICLES – A database of full-text peer-reviewed articles published by APA and affiliated journals. Includes current journal coverage as well as historical content.
  • DSM-5 – The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – Fifth Edition. A handbook used by healthcare professionals in the US and around the world as the authoritative guide to the definitions and diagnosis of mental disorders. Our online DSM-5 Library includes the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders , the Handbook of Differential Diagnosis , and the DSM-5 Clinical Cases . Be sure to see a Librarian if you need assistance using this resource.

As you read reports of research in your topic area, be sure to focus on the hypothesis and ask yourself why the study is important to your topic? Ask who are the subjects, how and why were they selected? How was the study conducted and under what conditions? What were the results of the study and was there anything inconclusive? Ask your instructor if you encounter problems in understanding the research presented and its relevance to your topic. For effective online searching, you may also Ask a Librarian for help finding good keywords to express your topic, and for assistance in using these resources and recommendations for others.

For anyone working in psychology, the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association is the definitive style guide. APA format can be challenging, and, as you work gathering resource citations generated in an online environment, it is important to be consistent with your reference page citations. Using a database like ProQuest or PsycArticles will allow you to locate scholarly resources from across various disciplines in the behavioral sciences, while at the same time maintaining consistency from citation to citation. If you’re also consulting and then citing information from resources found in the DSM-5 or other databases, go online to the APA Style Guide located under Research Help on the Libraries webpage – or check the APA Style Quick Guide found in paper in each campus Library. We also have a complete sample APA paper found by clicking Research Help , then How to Cite , and Additional Citation Resources on the Libraries webpage. APA uses a system of DOI’s or Digital Object Identifiers to help the reader identify the exact article used. All DSM-5 online information has a DOI associated with it. For assistance with editing or formatting an APA assignment, visit a CSN Writing Center or a Campus Library . We are all happy to help!

Understanding psychology starts with an understanding of scientific research methods. In order to be valid, opinions and claims all have to start with a scientific perspective of skeptical analysis of evidence and an understanding of how knowledge grows from the chain of research. For you, it all starts with Psychology 101, the classes that follow that course, and working your way through these first assignments.

The articles need to address the same area of interest (for example, depression and gender, love and crying, teenage norms and ostracism etc.), but do not have to necessarily be about the same exact experiment.  For hints on appropriate psychological phenomena, reference the textbook and lecture notes.

Developing a good research question can sometimes be the most difficult part of the research process.

Depending on your assignment, you may have several options for identifying what you want to write about. the trick is to find something interesting that you want to learn about (research) and write/speak about (paper/presentation)., not sure where to start.

  • Begin thinking about topics that have come up in class discussions, in assigned readings, or in the news.
  • Think about topics that may affect you or someone you know.
  • Psychological disorder (chronic illness, depression, learning disability, etc.)
  • Stage of development (infancy, early childhood, elderly, etc.)
  • Population group (gender, race, age, ethnicity, nationality, immigration status, sexuality, religion)
  • Life events (marriage, suicide, school, stress, unemployment, etc.)
  • Psychological theory (Piaget, Freud)
  • American Psychological Association Topics
  • Psychology Today
  • National Institute of Mental Health

Make sure your topic fits the requirements of the assignment and meets your instructor's approval.

Here is the pertinent part of the assignment. I never help them with their study but only with the literature review:

Group Project Goals:

A major research goal for this class is for you to complete a group project where you

and your group members will design your very own study/experiment related to a

specific theory, phenomenon, or special topic of your interest in the field of

Psychology. You will work closely together during Zoom class meetings using the

principles of the Scientific Method (applying the QLMRI method described above)

and APA formatting style for writing tasks, such that you will be able to complete a

team research project successfully. Since your project is a group-based activity, each

person will be actively involved in each step of this project, and thus you will receive

an “individual grade” and “group grade” for your efforts individually and collectively

as a group. Please note that you and your group members will need to stay in contact

throughout the week to coordinate various project goals, and occasional group

meetings may be required as well. Communication will be the key to completing

group-based assignments successfully.

Prior to working on your project, you will write a research proposal with your group

members in the first half of the semester and collect and/or analyze data in accordance

with your proposal during the second half of the semester. The research proposal is an

important process in providing a clear statement of the problem, a review of literature,

how the literature relates to your study goals, a proposed methods section (how your

study will be designed and executed), and the data analysis/techniques you intend to

conduct and use for your project. A research proposal is an important document that will

help you and your group members map out your research plans.

Team APA Research Report:

You will complete a group APA Style research report that will be the result of your semester’s

lab work/group research, and a demonstration of your ability to apply your knowledge so that

you have a completed research study to report and reflect on. The final research report will be an

expanded version of your research proposal, which will consist of synthesizing the literature and

summarizing it into your own words, where you will go into more depth with your sources.

Additionally, a full methods section will be necessary along with describing appropriate

statistical procedures used, and an original analysis and interpretation of the results will be

required. After working individually and as a group on various writing labs, you will combine

your efforts and create a group research report that demonstrates your collective knowledge on your research topic.

This assignment is to find a study in EBSCO and analysze some of the statistical results. It's a discussion post, not an essay.

Instructor has provided very clear instructions. Students can use any topic that would have statistical results.

This is a pretty straightforward and well-explained assignment. It's important to note that Riggs allows substantive sources for the proposal, but requires 3 scholarly studies/experiments for the literature review portion of the assignment.

Designing Library Research Assignments

Designing effective library assignments, library assignment examples, incorporating the acrl framework, utilize the library.

We are happy to help you and your students get the most out of your library research assignment!

If you are not sure how to begin designing your library research assignment, or if you have specific goals in mind but want to ensure you are achieving them in the most efficient way possible, consider contacting a librarian to help you design your assignment.

If you are interested in designing an assignment with a librarian, please contact:   Jessica Ramey,  [email protected]

psychology library assignment

Whether you are creating an introductory assignment designed to get students in the  door, or a complex research assignment that requires many different resources, this guide can help you articulate and achieve your assignment goals.   This guide provides tips, best-practices, sample assignments, and pertinent literature.

  • Identifying Assignment Goals
  • Assignment Implementation
  • Assessing your Assignment
  • Do's and Don'ts

Consider Learning Objectives:

  • What skills do I want my students to gain/demonstrate with this assignment?
  • Students often find more value in a library assignment that is directly linked to future assignments
  • Do my students need to become familiar with key resources in the field, like a specific database?
  • Do my students need practice critical thinking and evaluation of information skills?

Consider Students' Skill Levels:

  • Are my students familiar with library basics?
  • Are my students experienced searchers?
  • Are my students all on the same skill level?

Consider Assignment Time Frame:

  • How long should this assignment take to complete?
  • Will this assignment require my students to obtain material through Interlibrary Loan, and if so, how will that influence the time required to complete the assignment?

Be Clear About Expectations:

  • Students often do not understand the differences between sources found at the library. By stipulating exactly what it is you want them to find, they are in a much better position to ask for help when they get to the library
  • While the importance of a library assignment may seems obvious to you, many students have a hard time comprehending why a library assignment, and library resources, benefits them in long run. If you explain to your students why it is essential to utilize the library at the beginning of the assignment, you may find that they make more of an effort to walk away with a meaningful experience

Practice what you Preach:

  • Students are often unfamiliar with the simple steps associated with finding things in the library. By testing the assignment yourself you are sure to uncover unclear instructions, technological hiccups, or missing material.

Ask for Student Feedback:

  • What did they find surprising while completing the assignment?
  • Was there an aspect of the assignment the was especially helpful? Confusing? Tedious?
  • If they were designing the assignment

Evaluate Assignment Results:

  • If the work your students provided was not satisfactory, in what ways did they fall short of your expectations?
  • Were there questions on the assignment that most of your students struggled with?
  • Did my students demonstrate in improvement in research skills after they completed the assignment?
  • Is it obvious that my students did participate in the assignment?

Incorporate Changes:

  • After you have evaluated the effectiveness of your library research assignment, make sure you incorporate changes!
  • Consider consulting with a librarian if you are unsure of how to best achieve your assignment goals.

Here are a few important rules to keep in mind when designing effective library assignments:

  • Encourage students to ask librarians for help!
  • Put required materials on reserve, learn more about putting materials of reserve here .
  • Assign a library research assignment early, this enables students to utilize their recently acquired research skills during the rest of your course.
  • Ensure the library has access to the material you are asking students to find.
  • Assign students busy work like scavenger hunts.
  • Assign the same topic to a large class or multiple classes, they library may not have enough material to support 50 students all working on the same topic.
  • Require students use "print" sources only. Many students do not understand the difference between an internet source and an electronic source. By using the term "print" source, you may be unintentionally encouraging students to avoid using electronic books, electronic journals, and other valuable library resources.

If you are hoping to create a library research assignment that goes beyond teaching library-specific skills (e.i. finding a book on the shelf, locating the Research Help Desk, or understanding the Library of Congress classification system), you may want to consider incorporating the Association of College and Research Libraries' (ACRL)  Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education .

In 2015, ACRL introduced the  Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education . The Framework provides educators with a unique set of goals designed to guide information literacy instruction and help identify, articulate, and impart the fundamental necessity of information literacy in today's rapidly changing world.

The Framework places special emphasis on the importance of collaboration and threshold concepts. Additionally, the Framework is contextually broad which makes it well-suited to all disciplines.

You can view the Framework here:  http://www.ala.org/acrl/standards/ilframework

If you are interested in developing an assignment that utilizes the Framework, but aren't sure where to begin, contact Information Literacy Librarian: Jessica Ramey ([email protected])

Man or bear? Hypothetical question sparks conversation about women's safety

Women explain why they would feel safer encountering a bear in the forest than a man they didn't know. the hypothetical has sparked a broader discussion about why women fear men..

psychology library assignment

If you were alone in the woods, would you rather encounter a bear or a man? Answers to that hypothetical question have sparked a debate about why the vast majority say they would feel more comfortable choosing a bear.

The topic has been hotly discussed for weeks as men and women chimed in with their thoughts all over social media.

Screenshot HQ , a TikTok account, started the conversation, asking a group of women whether they would rather run into a man they didn't know or a bear in the forest. Out of the seven women interviewed for the piece, only one picked a man.

"Bear. Man is scary," one of the women responds.

A number of women echoed the responses given in the original video, writing in the comments that they, too, would pick a bear over a man. The hypothetical has people split, with some expressing their sadness over the state of the world and others cracking jokes. Some men were flabbergasted.

Here's what we know.

A bear is the safer choice, no doubt about it, many say

There were a lot of responses, more than 65,000, under the original post. Many wrote that they understood why the women would choose a bear.

"No one’s gonna ask me if I led the bear on or give me a pamphlet on bear attack prevention tips," @celestiallystunning wrote.

@Brennduhh wrote: "When I die leave my body in the woods, the wolves will be gentler than any man."

"I know a bear's intentions," another woman wrote. "I don't know a man's intentions. no matter how nice they are."

Other TikTok users took it one step further, posing the hypothetical question to loved ones. Meredith Steele, who goes by @babiesofsteele , asked her husband last week whether he would rather have their daughter encounter a bear or a man in the woods. Her husband said he "didn't like either option" but said he was leaning toward the bear.

"Maybe it's a friendly bear," he says.

Diana, another TikTok user , asked her sister-in-law what she would choose and was left speechless.

"I asked her the question, you know, just for giggles. She was like, 'You know, I would rather it be a bear because if the bear attacks me, and I make it out of the woods, everybody’s gonna believe me and have sympathy for me," she said. "But if a man attacks me and I make it out, I’m gonna spend my whole life trying to get people to believe me and have sympathy for me.'"

Bear vs. man debate stirs the pot, woman and some men at odds

The hypothetical has caused some tension, with some women arguing that men will never truly understand what it's like to be a woman or the inherent dangers at play.

Social media users answered this question for themselves, producing memes, spoken word poetry and skits in the days and weeks since.

So, what would you choose?
