Thesis WordPress Theme Review – Why We Use It

Thesis Theme for WordPress: Options Galore and a Helpful Support Community

Almost every blog I comment on that belongs to my favorite bloggers uses Thesis. It is the first theme I recommend to small businesses and clients and there is only one other theme I even suggest they consider: the Genesis Framework.

IS THESIS BETTER THAN GENESIS?

Thesis and Genesis are different.  I prefer Thesis for my blogs and believe you might want to consider Genesis for a more product oriented blog.

We Recommend Serious Bloggers and Businesses Use ONLY Either Thesis Or  StudioPress Genesis for their blogs.

If you want to know more about Genesis or to compare the Genesis Framework to Thesis use these links:

  • WordPress: StudioPress Genesis Framework
  • See Ron Cripps’ @AffiliateXFiles WP Genesis Review
  • See Kristi Hines @Kikolani Thesis vs Genesis – Comparing Premium WordPress Themes

Both of these themes are on my AAA Recommended Brands list that is linked from the top of the center column on every page of this blog and they are the only two I would seriously recommend anyone consider.

Why I NEVER Recommend Using Free WordPress Themes:

I’ll let these other experts explain the myriad reasons (that means too many to count!) for avoiding free WordPress Themes:

  • ReadWriteWeb: The Hidden Dangers of Free WordPress Themes by Audrey Waters
  • WPMU.org: Why You Should Never Search For Free WordPress Themes in Google or Anywhere Else By Siobhan McKeown

WHY USE THESIS THEME on WordPress?

Less down time (and tech support can be really expensive).

Whenever WordPress or a plugin gets updated there is a risk that the new version will not be compatible with WordPress,  your theme, or one of the plugins you’re using.

The more plugins you run and the more advanced your skills the higher the risk of conflicts.

There is an entire team behind Thesis that makes sure commonly used plugins are compatible and continue to be compatible BEFORE they roll out a new version.

They know when WordPress is going to be updated and they ensure that Thesis and common plugins are still going to work as expected. That means our blogs running Thesis will keep running.

Use a free theme and the next WordPress update may take you down – or worse – take the entire server you are on down – along with dozens of other sites.

Your hosting company will be VERY UNHAPPY and the first thing they will do is delete all your plugins. Hostgator has been known to flat out tell bloggers they can’t reinstall CommentLuv because they blamed it for a problem.

Hosting companies don’t want to diagnose the problem – they just want to make it go away. They are far more likely to tell you not to run your favorite plugins than to assist you in figuring out where the conflict is or even let you do it yourself because they don’t want to risk your blog taking down the server. They may want to charge you for tech support which could run into $100s or $1000s.

Running the Thesis Theme on your WordPress install = priceless peace of mind, tons of hours and aggravation saved, and a blog that stays online.

I have NEVER in ANY blog had a Thesis update cause a problem. I am NOT saying that could never happen because anything humans do is not infallable – but the team behind Thesis is super-sharp and they test thoroughly BEFORE our blogs are exposed to potential conflicts. That is priceless.

Free Themes Can Be Used for Nefarious Purposes Such as Including Security Exploits, replacing YOUR links with someone else’s affiliate links or linking your blog to bad neighborhoods and getting you banned.

PROFESSIONAL THEMES MANAGE INFRASTRUCTURE:

Advanced themes like Thesis manage much of what goes on behind the scenes in a blog such as no-following unimportant links, how comments are displayed and how the blog operates and is laid out.

AUTOMATIC FORMATTING

Thesis automatically formats your blog for different devices, monitor sizes and browsers. You need your blog (or what looks like a static site but is actually running on WordPress using Thesis) to display perfectly on EVERY visitors screen.

If you don’t use Thesis someone should be testing every resolution, browser, monitor size, device – that is a nightmare I don’t even want to think about – and because the Thesis Team does this so well I don’t have to worry about it!

MOBILE READY

Thesis automatically formats your blog for every device so you don’t have to use something else to make that happen.

I know Thesis does this well because when I’m in direct contact with someone I ask them what they are using and how well this blog displays and navigates on THEIR device. In every case they say the formatting is fine, they can navigate the site, and read and leave comments.

BUILT IN SEO

Thesis has built in SEO fields that allow you to optimize every page and post individually. This eliminates the need for plugins like All-in-one-SEO, Platimum SEO, etc. that are really necessary if you use a less advanced theme and want as much organic traffic as possible.

THESIS TECH SUPPORT

Thesis has exceptional people who provide tech support, a strong community who helps each other in their forum, and with almost all of our favorite collaborators using Thesis if you run into trouble we can help you get it fixed -fast!

I have asked for assistance for a blogger who accidentally broke something or got hacked or couldn’t get into their WP install and tagged a few people on Twitter and had 3-4 bloggers IMMEDIATELY offer to drop everything and assist!

I can’t guarantee that will always happen because even we have to eat and sleep sometime, but the odds are good other bloggers will come to your aid and if you’re running Thesis they will more easily be able to assist you.

If you are considering upgrading your theme we highly recommend Thesis .

THEME DESIGN

Thesis allows you to use ONE theme but make every site totally unique.  This blog, our golf store blog , our gift store blog , and thousands of other blogs use Thesis and no two look alike.

If you aren’t a designer or don’t have the time or desire to learn to customize Thesis do what we do – get a talented Thesis savvy blogger to do it for you!

We know many bloggers who can do basic Thesis customization and if you need a real designer for a fancy custom graphic like the one in the image below, click that image to see what the best all-around WordPress expert we know and Thesis Skins provider Derek Semmler   can do for you.

Since we’re on the subject you might be interested in checking out all the cool blogs that are based on Thesis. Here are two galleries you can visit to see more customized Thesis themes:

WHICH THESIS LICENSE TO CHOOSE:

If you have or plan to build many blogs get the developer’s license. If you only need it for one blog now, buy the personal license. You can always upgrade later.

If you plan to have someone else install your blog for you, obtain your license to use Thesis through them. You pay them and they pay DIYThemes for an additional blog under their developer’s license.

WHERE TO GET THESIS WORDPRESS LICENSES:

[DISCLAIMER: The links to Thesis in this post are affiliate links. Any blogger using Thesis probably has an affiliate link to Thesis so if decide to buy it you can support your favorite blogger by clicking on the link in their blog just before you buy. It does not cost you any more money to do this and bloggers are using it because it is that good – not because they might receive a commission.  ]

Thesis WordPress Theme Review

thesis on wordpress

Before starting the review I want to make a few things clear. First, I have worked with Thesis many times for client websites and Second, wpexplorer.com is an affiliate of Thesis which means that I make a commission from any Thesis sale generated through my affiliate link. This said, I wanted to let you know that this is not your average bs review that sounds more like an advertisement. Rather I wanted to create an Informative Review of Thesis so you can better understand everything about the theme.

I could sit here for hours and write about how awesome thesis is, however, you probably rather read about the factual in-and-outs of this theme.

There is a lot to read on this Thesis Review…This is why I have provided these nice big headers so you can skip to whatever sounds interesting. Enjoy!

What is the Thesis WordPress Theme Framework?

Thesis is a Premium WordPress Theme Framework developed by Chris Pearson and has become one of the most popular and downloaded/purchased Premium themes out there. In fact, I can not go a single day without browsing the web and seeing a site running on thesis. It is unbelievable.

You have probably encountered many blogs or sites that are using thesis and possibly recognized their similar appearances. At the same time, you may have also seeing many sites that were using this framework and you had no idea. The reason for this, is that Thesis is an awesome theme right “out-of-the-box” but it can also be customized really easily too look like “anything”.

But what actually is Thesis? I guess you could call Thesis a WordPress Theme, however, it is much more then that. It is a code and design Framework built around WordPress that delivers a rock-solid SEO website code plus design flexibility that requires no knowledge of HTML or CSS to make customizations to your website’s design.

Thesis Admin Control Panel

The Thesis Admin Panel is what makes this platform truly stand out (in my opinion). Sure many themes out there let you customize your twitter account or upload a logo for your header, but Thesis is different. This powerful platform will allow you to make tons of adjustments from including pages in the navigation bar to selecting a custom CSS style-sheet. You will have the power to customize your site completely, right through your WordPress administration area.

The admin panel makes it really easy for bloggers that do not want to get their hands dirty with any code but still want to do some basic editing to their website design and make customizations to their on-page Search Engine Optimization.

Admin Panel Screenshot

Here is a quick screenshot of one of the admin setting pages so you can see more or less what they look like. The control panel is really clean and makes use of drop down containers so everything is nicely organized and you can find what you need without having to scroll down forever.

Thesis Theme Panel

Customizing Thesis & Thesis Skins

As mentioned earlier, one of the best things about the DYI Thesis Theme is the ability to customize the look and function of your site via theme control panel which is easy to use and very intuitive. But you can also customize the look of your site via what are called “child themes”, which are themes designed to work with the Thesis Framework and can be uploaded via your theme panel and they will automatically add a new style/design to your site. There are many places where you can find Thesis skins and they are available both for free and for purchase. This ability makes Thesis great for bloggers who don’t want to spend anytime customizing their site or need some extra features that are available via other skins. And it is also a great for web designers who are looking to use the Thesis Framework for all their clients.

Is Thesis Really That Awesome for SEO?

While any theme or site can be edited for Search Engine Optimization many are not optimized to start with. This can be a real hassle for amateur/inter-mediate bloggers which is why the Thesis Framework has been designed to be search engine friendly right out-of-the-box. In fact, most people download external plugins such as “All In One SEO”. But what if you could have your SEO built into your theme? This would make everything run more smoothly with cleaner code and it will make it much easier for you to make overall SEO changes to your site. Plus, Thesis is already very SEO-Friendly right out-of-the-box, so you can install it and feel comfortable that your site will be indexed.

Some of the key components that makes this framework good for SEO purposes are:

  • Title tags and Meta Description fields on pages/posts
  • Noindexing options for pages and psots
  • Alt text for images
  • Clean and simple back-end code
  • Simple design – faster loading (google has added speed as a measure of search engine rankings)

You must remember that simply by installing Thesis on your site you will not automatically rank number 1 on Google, rather the framework provides a very good base and clean code to help make your SEO efforts easier and possibly more successful.

Target Advertisement with Thesis & Thesis For Affiliates

Now here is a really neat feature about Thesis you are going to love: “The Multimedia Box”. This is a 300px by 250px (size can be changed) advertisement block that is by default on the top of the sidebar and it will allow you to rotate between different media (images, video, adsense).

So what? A rotating media box. Sure this is true, but what makes the multimedia box of Thesis so unique is that you can edit what appears in that area for every page. This means that you can provide better targeted advertisement based on your page content. So for example on a Thesis Review post you could have an affiliate banner for DIY Themes and on a post about WordPress SEO you may want to have an amazon link to a corresponding SEO book. For posts that you do not have any affiliate links to post you may consider using that spot for adsense.

Ultimately with the media box you will be able to provide relevant advertisement to your visitors and help increase your affiliate sales.

With the latest version of Thesis (1.7) there is a new feature that affiliate marketers will love and it is the ability to easily create 301 redirect links out of your affiliate links. This means that you can transform all your ugly affiliate links into ones that look like they are on your site and with pretty slugs. This way people will not be discourage to click on them and you can help increase your click-through rates.

How Unique is Thesis?

Uniqueness is very important to generate visitor loyalty and help encourage a community on your site. The problem is that many people are using the same WordPress Themes as everyone else, so when you browse the web you find sites that look just like every other site. At least for me, this is a real turn-off.

There are currently thousands of people using Thesis and many people are using thesis with the basic settings applied and nothing customized. The beauty is that this framework is so easy to customize that you can make your site look 100% unique in just minutes. Ultimately it is up to you…You can go for the plain and basic design or you can edit it a bit and no one will even know you are using the Framework.

This is what makes Thesis so great. Unlike many other themes out there you will have to do a lot of CSS and XHTML editing to make your site look unique, but with Thesis you can log into your admin panel the second you activate it and make some changes really quickly and easily. Or you can upload ad use your own custom style-sheet.

Is Thesis The Perfect Theme?

No theme is “Perfect”, as any theme can virtually be improved in one way or another, however, there are probably many users out there that would argue that Thesis is very close to being a perfect theme. Below I highlight some of the advantages and disadvantages of Thesis so you can see what things are awesome and what could be improved.

Thesis WordPress Theme Advantages

  • Clean code and minimalistic design
  • Search Engine friendly and optimized
  • Make easy theme customizations without touching any code
  • Streamlines with custom child themes
  • Relatively cheap developer license

Thesis WordPress Theme Disadvantages

  • Plain and simple default design
  • Blogger layout – may not be as good for businesses without a child theme
  • CSS knowledge is still highly recommended to be able to make design changes to your site

How Much Does It Cost and Is It A Good Deal?

There are 2 pricing options for Thesis, the Developer option and the Personal option. The developer license costs $164 while the personal one is only $87. And while this may seem expensive, especially in comparison to the price of other themes, it is in fact a very good deal for what you are getting. You could spend over $500 paying someone for a custom designed website or you can buy this theme for $87 and customize it yourself. If you want your site to look and function great as well as rank on search engines, then it may be worth the money.

Below you can see what each of the different plans comes with…As you can see, if you are planning on using this theme on multiple sites, the Developer option is still cheaper then purchasing 2 personal option licenses!

Developer’s Option $164

  • Unlimited use of Thesis on sites that you own1
  • Access to all-new beta versions of Thesis before final release!2
  • Access to Client Site Options, which allow you to deploy Thesis on sites for clients3
  • Access to members-only Answers and Forums
  • Lifetime Thesis upgrades
  • 30-day money back guarantee

Personal Option $87

  • Use of Thesis on one live website and one localized development server
  • Access to the Developer’s Option Upgrade for only $774

Paying For A WordPress Theme

I remember when I first started with WordPress I was very skeptical and reluctant to buy any template and there are thousands of people out there that currently do not like the idea of paying for a theme when there are thousands if not millions of free themes out there. However, I have changed and hopefully I have somewhat convinced you other wise as well.

When you think about the TONS of extra features you will get by paying a little but for a Premium template. Think about it…If purchasing a premium theme helps your search engine rankings and increases even just a few more conversions from your site’s advertisements or products than it has been totally worth it.

And best of all with Premium Themes you do not need to worry about having to keep any footer links, spam that could have been added to a free theme, and most importantly you will be able to edit your site much more easily so you can avoid tons of hardship when trying to customize your site.

Should I Buy Thesis?

Of course since I am trying to make some affiliate sales here I would say YES click on the link below and buy this wicked-awesome theme. However, instead I want to give you a list of some things you can think about and possibly write down your answers so you can see if it really is worth it for your. And if you do consider purchasing this theme, you can do so through my links and I will get my respective commission. Thanks!

Things To Think About Before Purchase

  • $87 for a theme you can easily customize and make it look like anything, is that a good deal?
  • If you are a developer could Thesis make your life easier by providing you with a faster way to create client sites?
  • Thesis has some great SEO features and comes with a nice clean code. Is SEO a concern for you?
  • Would editing one theme over and over again be more efficient that buying or finding a new free theme for every new site or whenever you want to change the look of one.
  • Will Thesis make your life easier? (it has for many)
  • “22,100 savy webmasters rely on this framework” would you care to join?
  • If you buy it and it wasn’t as cool as you thought it would be, was $80 worth the try? (there is a 30-day money back guarantee)

Thesis Now With A Split License

For those of you concerned about the GPL license of WordPress, DYI Thesis announced just a couple weeks ago that they have added a split license to their theme making everything to do with WordPress GPL and all the Thesis Framework code to be the property of DYI Themes.

When I first uncovered Thesis about 10 years ago, it really was the best. Mostly it was easy to use. But now, Thesis is extremely user-UNfriendly. For reasons I cannot imagine, Thesis has been redesigned to make the easiest things impossible to accomplish. I found myself Googling for how to do things that were so simple in earlier versions. For example, what did happen to the “Admin Panel Screenshot” where a user could define columns and widgets and search bars and colors, etc.? Everything was nicely in one place. Now, a user must go back and forth all over the Theme for perhaps hours trying to accomplish what once was done in 10 minutes. It looks like an intentional effort to make the Theme complicated. But why? After several hours of looking, I was never able to find how to remove the widgets from the sidebar, despite the fact that my site was one column. How can there be widgets in the sidebar when I should not have a sidebar? I had no choice but to use another theme. So extremely disappointed.

The Thesis 2.0 Framework for WordPress – A First Look

October 18, 2012 by Wil Ransz

thesis on wordpress

Early August, I posted a review on the Thesis Theme . The version examined at the time was 1.8.5. Just to recall, my final thoughts at the time were: 1) impressed; 2) also a little anxious for Thesis 2.0, since the documentation implies that users of Thesis 2.0 will have to work with PHP classes.

October 2 nd , Thesis 2.0 came available – finally. However, people looking out for an update of Thesis 1.8.5 did not get what they were waiting for. Thesis 2.0 is not an update to 1.8.5. Thesis 2.0 is a completely rewrite – from ground-up.

Writing a new theme framework has its advantages of course. The author – Chris Pearson in this case – does not have to bother about the legacy of Thesis 1.x. That opens opportunities.

The down side is that there is currently no easy migration path. Premium child themes for 1.x will not work with Thesis 2.0. Any customization for 1.x versions, will probably not work with Thesis 2.0. So back to the drawing board?

That is probably why – for existing customers – Thesis 1.8.5 is and will be available next to Thesis 2.0. Thesis 1.x will probably be phased out over time, but for the time being, existing users of Thesis will be able to use both versions next to each other, and gain some time to develop a strategy concerning child themes and customizations.

Getting Ready

thesis on wordpress

Installing Thesis has become easier with 2.0. Previously, you had to upload Thesis over FTP. With Thesis 2.0 it is possible to upload Thesis with WordPress like other themes.

When you enter the Thesis 2.0 panel for the first time, you are welcomed by a transparent page and a green [Click to Get Started] button, which you have to press to continue.

At the top of the page is the Thesis menu bar located. This menu serves six buttons:

To start with the last two; the [View Site] button brings you to the front-end of your site, while the More button offers links to Thesis resources – Blog, User’s Guide, and Support Forum.

Thesis Boxes are the Thesis 2.0 equivalent of plugins – PHP code. Boxes are skin independent, meaning that a Box added in one skin will be available in other skins too. Thesis Packages are CSS code that you can apply to page elements.

The Thesis 2.0 Site Options

Hovering over the [Site] button in the Thesis menu opens a drop down menu:

thesis on wordpress

  • HTML Head Editor
  • Tracking Scripts
  • Home Page SEO

The HTML Head Editor allows you to tweak some general site settings like Title Tag, Meta Robots, RSS Feed and Header Scripts. Only six of the ten toggle boxes show a Gear icon when hovering over the box, indicating there are options to customize. Although the Favicon box shows such an icon there is no field to enter a URL or a button to upload a file.

At the Tracking Scripts you can either enter your Google Analytics Tracking ID in a text field or enter the JavaScript code in a box.

The 404 Page option allows you to select one of your WordPress pages as a custom 404 Page in case of a Page Not Found situation.

At the Home Page SEO settings you can enter the Title Tag, Meta Description, Meta Keywords, and some Meta Robots (noindex, nofollow, and noarchive).

Thesis 2.0 Skins

The [Skins] button gives you two options:

thesis on wordpress

  • Select Skin
  • Skin Editor

Thesis 2.0 installs with two skins – Thesis Classic and Thesis Blank. The first skin mimics the Thesis 1.x styling, while the last one presents a completely blank canvas.

A nice feature is that you can preview a skin by hitting the [Preview Skin in Development Mode] button. By clicking that button, administrators are able to preview the skin under construction on the front-end, while visitors to the site continue with the current active skin.

The Skin Editor is of course the most existing part of Thesis 2.0. You can either modify the Thesis Classic skin or create your own from scratch. Based on earlier experiences, I decided to create a new skin.

Upon launch, the Skin Editor will open the skin in preview mode or otherwise the active skin. The Skin Editor comprehends the menu bar at the top, the canvas at the left, and three boxes at the right.

The menu bar at the top of the screen serves six buttons:

  • View Your Site
  • Thesis Admin
  • Save Template

You use the first three buttons to build your site. The [View Your Site] conveys you to the front-end, and you the [Thesis Admin] button brings you back to WordPress. And the green [Save Template] button stores your work, of course.

thesis on wordpress

The Skin Editor starts in HTML Mode – with the Template Editor. Besides an empty Body container, the canvas at the left side of the screen is still completely blank – just like the front-end.

In the left corner, just below the menu bar, you will see the name of the current template – Home in this case. Clicking the Template Name triggers a wizard allowing you to select other templates, or create a new one.

Clicking the gear icon at the right side of the template name button – it is really a matter of hovering – allows you to select JavaScript libraries and set the number of posts for the loop.

At the right side of the screen we have three boxes. The top box is like a desktop where you can temporarily store the stuff you are working on. The bottom box acts like a recycle bin. Boxes dropped into this area will be deleted from all templates when exiting the Template Editor.

The middle section allows you create new boxes. When adding a box, you have to assign a type to it. You can choose from:

  • WP Nav Menu
  • Comments Form

Adding a box is a four step process:

thesis on wordpress

  • select a type
  • give a name to the box
  • drag the box to the desired spot on the canvas
  • click the gear icon and enter the desired  settings and values – like CSS selectors (ID’s, classes)

Every time you save the template under development, the site is reloaded on the front-end showing you your progress with it. Of course, the site still looks quite naked in this stage, since there is no CSS applied to it yet.

As soon as you create a widget with the Template Editor, this widget area becomes available on the WordPress Widgets page (Appearance >> Widgets). BTW, Thesis 2.0 comes with four custom widgets: Google Custom Search, Killer Recent Entries, Search Widget, and Subscriptions.

The first encounter with the Template Editor was quite annoying. After playing around a bit with it, you learn how to handle it. In order to drag boxes to another container area, you need to press Shift+drag. Within a certain container, you can simply drag the box – without the need to hold the Shift button.

Nevertheless, since I do most of my work on a laptop, I find Shift+drag not very convenient. Anyway, creating a page template is not really difficult. But it is important that you understand the concepts of CSS IDs and CSS classes. Fortunately you do not have to understand PHP classes.

The Thesis 2.0 CSS Editor

thesis on wordpress

Since we want to dress up the site about with some styling, we need to turn to the CSS Editor. The CSS Editor presents nearly the same menu bar as the Template Editor.

Only the [Save Template] button, has been replaced by a [Save and Compile CSS] button. Next to this green button, is the drop down menu of the Package generator located.

You can either build your CSS from scratch or apply packages. A package is a bunch of CSS rules that you can apply to template elements – like a menu, posts, widgets, etc.

The first step is to create your own packages in collaboration with the CSS Editor. Via the drop down menu just below the Packages heading, you can launch a Package wizards for:

  • Single Element Styles
  • Horizontal Dropdown Menu (WP)
  • Post Formatting

Let us have a look at the Post Formatting Package. From the drop down menu in the upper right corner, we select Post Formatting. The Packages wizard appears to help us create the necessary CSS.

The wizard presents three tabs: Package, Options, and Additional CSS. The Package details include entries for the identification of the package: Name, Reference, and CSS Selector.

The Options tab includes toggle sections for Font Settings, Headlines, Sub-Headlines, Lists, and Typography. Only sections relevant to the package regarding are presented here, and every section prompt us to enter necessary details.

Opening the Font Settings for example allows you to:

  • select a font – from a list of about 30)
  • enter a font size
  • select a font weight – normal, bold, etc)
  • enter a line height
  • select the preferred text alignment – default, left, center, right and justify

When your site design demands CSS rules that you have not been able to enter via the wizard, you can enter these under the Custom CSS tab, which is basically one big text area.

When you are done with the CSS, you click the [Save and Compile CSS] button in order to generate and the actual CSS.

Adding Images with Thesis 2.0

thesis on wordpress

At the right of the HTML and CSS buttons in the menu bar sits the Images button. Apparently the WordPress Media Uploader was not good enough, so Thesis comes with its own uploader.

Images added with Thesis will be added to the images folder of the skin regarding – not to the usual WordPress uploads folder. Why re-inventing the wheel here?

And Now What?

The Thesis community has been waiting a long time for Thesis 2.0 However, I think that the launch was a bit premature. Today, two weeks after the launch, there is still no documentation, there are no tutorials, there are no additional boxes, and there are no additional packages.

We are not talking about a free open source framework, but about a near $200 premium framework with over 50,000 users who have been waiting years for Thesis 2.0. I am sure it is just a matter of time before these issues will be resolved. Either by Thesis or otherwise by the Thesis community.

Yes, I am willing to admit it: Thesis 2.0 looks very promising. It is possible to create page templates simply by drag-and-drop, without coding any PHP. However, I expect that it will be hard to avoid manual CSS coding completely.

May be I will give Thesis 2.0 another try when there is decent set of documentation available. However, I am convinced that it is possible to create websites with Thesis 2.0 without the need to code PHP.

Thesis 2.0 is available with three plans – in any case, you get a 30 day money back guarantee:

  • $87 Thesis Basic
  • $164 Thesis Basis Plus
  • $197 Thesis Professional

The two Basic plans entitle you to only 12 months of upgrades, but with unlimited forum support. The Professional license includes not only unlimited forum support but unlimited upgrades too. Users of Thesis Professional will also get two additional skins and two additional boxes – both are not available yet.

Current owners of the Thesis Personal Option will get Thesis 2.0 for free, but without the Professional options – the additional skins and boxes. When you own a Thesis Theme Developer license you are automatically promoted to Thesis Professional.

When you are seriously interested in Thesis 2.0, the best source at the moment is probably the Thesis 2.0 Launch Party Replay video series. If you want to start working with Thesis 2.0, or even want to learn more about Thesis 2.0, you should check out that webpage.

Thesis – a WordPress Theme Design Worth Considering

Thesis.png

Not it’s not the start to a bad joke and yes the answer could be many things – but today I’m excited because one of my favorite blog designers, Chris Pearson has teamed up with one of my favorite bloggers, Brian Clark from CopyBlogger to put together a fantastic Premium WordPress theme called Thesis .

This theme is already getting some great reviews around the blogosphere (you can see some testimonials here ) and it is no wonder – because it’s got some great things going for it including:

  • SEO – WP is generally pretty well optimized to start with but Thesis takes it a step further and gives you every chance of ranking well in Google.
  • Accessibility – this theme will be able to be accessed by those using all kinds of browsers, mobile browsing and those with special needs
  • Customizable – you don’t want a design that looks exactly the same as everyone else’s – Chris has put together a theme that can have different backgrounds, has support for custom CSS and more. You can have rotating images to make your design even more unique. Alternatively you can use this multimedia box show six 125×125 ads, a video or even disable it. All this is done from within WP’s admin (see picture below) – very cool. Check out the ‘ showcase ‘ page on the Thesis site to see how others have been using the theme already.
  • Feature Rich – it plays nicely with Google Analytics and Mint, manages your RSS feed for you, separates comments and trackbacks, gives you lots of control over whether to show dates and author bylines on posts and much more.
  • Well Laid Out Design – Thesis is easy to get around and quite intuitive for those arriving on your site of all levels of web experience
  • Simple to Use – Thesis is easy to use and while I’m sure Chris will continue to add features and ways to use the theme it’s quite intuitive to get up and running and looking the way you want it.
  • Support – one thing that I love about Thesis is the support forum that Chris has built for those who invests in this theme. It’s already pretty active and covers a lot of the questions that you’d have as someone using it.
  • Free Upgrades – Chris has already released an update to Thesis which gives an indication that he’s still

You’ll want to check out Thesis for yourself – a good place to start is on it’s About Page .

Thesis comes with two license options. The personal license is $87 and the developer’s license is $164. The main difference is that the dev license allows you unlimited use of the theme across as many sites as you like.

If I were starting out today with a new blog and didn’t have the budget to get a custom design or the ability to design my own – Thesis would be something I’d serious look at investing in. In fact if I were starting a blog network today it’d be an ideal investment to grab the dev license as it is a great way to have a variety of blogs that share a similar look yet are customizable.

PS : here’s a look at the fantastic options panel that gives you control over many aspects of this theme (click to enlarge).

thesis-options.png

I’d like to say that the Thesis theme is damn amazing. Its typography and SEO is mouth watering. I’m going to use it for my next blog.

@Ganesh – Be sure to check out the new features in the 1.2 release. I posted about it on my Thesis Theme blog here:

Thesis Theme 1.2 Revealed

There are so many new options that I’m having to do a series of blog posts to cover them all. :-)

Yep, this is the one. I love the fact that you can purchase a personal license then upgrade by throwing another $87 to clench the dream deal on this theme steal. Love it… Just Love it!

Keep Shining

thanks for suggesting thesis. It doesn’t do everything but it is very helpful. Building a website requires A LOT of effort, learning and time. Thesis reduces a lot of that.

thesis on wordpress

Just what I need. I’m looking for a good wordpress designer for weeks….I will check these guys out…

thesis on wordpress

Rich options, but too expansive for me.

thesis on wordpress

Love you blog by the way!!

I recently have been working as a consultant to hep expand a clients business. I decided a blog was absolutely the way to go in her case in particular. I researched various blogs, and decided that i liked WordPress features the best, but eventually went with Blogger because WordPress wouldn’t allow forms, and i really wanted to include the Feedburner email sign up form, and have the option of perhaps others in the future.

Now i’m confused… i take it this ‘Thesis’ template is in WordPress, and i see you have forms on your page here. Grrrr… was i mistaken/mislead? My client has already posted several successful post on her Blogger blog….

I find the Blogger tempaltes very limited, and the features also…

Any thoughts/advice?

I bought Thesis and am running on my Load of BS blog. Not at all what I expected. I thought it was supposed to be easy to configure but unless you are good with CSS and Hooks it isn’t.

I had earlier heard of Thesis so much.. from so many people that it seemed like a damp marketing squib. But now I stand convinced that Thesis is the best thing to have happened to WP. It is indeed a great piece of code for churning out websites in no time.

My blog looks cleaner with Thesis. It is simply wonderful that a new-bee like me got started on it in no time. The extent of customisation one can do is great. Kudos to CP!

thesis on wordpress

The thesis site itself needs work. I have been looking for hours for a screenshot of the admin options page, and finally I find it here on problogger!

Thesis’ features look amazing. However, I’m turned off by the price tag. If they can reduce it a bit, then I’ll consider paying for it.

Thesis Theme: Using WordPress Custom Post Types

Thesis Meta Boxes

This brief guide will show you how to add the default Thesis Theme meta boxes to your custom post types. Use all the Thesis goodness with your custom posts.

Setting up a custom post type is pretty straight forward, for more information see the WordPress codex , again Justin Tadlock also has a great primer on custom post types .

The following example will add a custom post type of “Locations” (this could be anything really: books, press-releases, faqs, products, etc) … add the following to your custom_functions.php file:

Additionally, do have a look at the register_post_type() documentation for all the juicy details.

Don’t Forget To Flush

This is Important (how very true…), after you add a custom post type you must do one of two things for the rewrite rules to start taking affect (so you can begin testing your custom post types and not get 404 headers).

WordPress will NOT auto refresh it’s rewrite rules on its own, you will have to do this by:

  • Going into Settings > Permalinks and click the Save Changes button (this is the easiest way), or…
  • Use code to call flush_rules() (just once)

I recommend you do the first option, here is what WordPress has to say about the latter:

Keep in mind that the flush_rules function is quite slow, so in practice you never want to call it from the init filter that gets executed on each page load. Instead, call this function only when the rewrite rules change. If the rules get set up and then never change, it is enough to flush in register_activation_hook of your plugin.

So… What Does This Have To Do With Thesis?

By default Thesis will only add its custom meta boxes (SEO Details and Additional Style, Post Image and Thumbnail, Javascript and Multimedia Box Options) to “post” and “page” types. After adding your own custom post type, use the following to make the default Thesis meta boxes appear by also adding this to your custom_functions.php file:

Note: Once the latest version of Thesis is released, it will more than likely address this issue.

Umm, It’s Not Working

If you copy and paste the above code and then make changes, be sure that you adjust line 58 with the custom post type name that you used on line 45 (in the above example: location is the name).

Hmm for some reason it didn’t add the thesis default meta boxes…

Dimas

Justin, make sure that you adjust line 58 with the custom post type “name” that you added on line 45:

What a laughable error on my part – I completely missed the first chunk of code; I read your comment – line 45. Wait, there’s no line 45.. What’s going on here??

Thanks Dimas!

Actually I’m really having a tough time getting the hang of writing custom posts and inserting fields in these posts… I’m trying to create meta boxes that show up on custom post types. I saw your other tutorial on custom posts + meta boxes but am having a tough time following – do you have a code that I could implement in thesis?

Take a look at my WPAlchemy Meta Box PHP Class , download the code and you will find a good example on setting up meta boxes. The class is an attempt at making meta box setup really easy.

Will do! Thank you so much! If you have a minute and want to take a look over my code, I attempted to follow the “how to create a wordpress custom meta box” tutorial in conjunction with the “how to limit the display of a meta field” and also tried to incorporate this article –

here’s my error message:

Warning: call_user_func(my_meta_setup_3) [function.call-user-func]: First argument is expected to be a valid callback in /home/events/public_html/wp-admin/includes/template.php on line 2868

& here’s my custom_functions.php code: http://pastie.org/1043751

David Alexander

Great stuff. This worked perfectly for moi. Stumbled the article. 🙂

Eric Irwin

I used a plugin called Custom Post Types UI to create my custom post type. The plugin makes it very easy to manage custom post types. I waited to see if Chris added a way to have Thesis meta boxes in 1.8 but he just released it this morning and I’m not seeing the meta boxes. So, I added your code to add the custom meta boxes to my custom post type and it worked out great. Thanks for the tip Dimas!

Raintrader

I tried your code to add the Thesis Metabxes to my custom Posts. So far it worked like a charm. But how can i make non Thesis Metaboxes (from plugins for exp.) show up in my custom post eidt Screen too???

Any Help Welcome

Thanx Sascha

Sascha, take a look at my WPAlchemy MetaBox helper …

Rich

Hey. Thanks for the tip / code.

I’ve added the code for the meta boxes on a custom post type on my development site. The meta boxes appear just as expected.

Unfortunately, changes to any of the added meta boxes do not save.

I’ve tracked the problem down to the save_meta() function in options_post.php. The data is not saving because it fails the nonce check (lines 146-150 of options_post.php)

I know it fails there because I commented out that particular section for testing and the data saves fine when it is commented out. I, obviously, want to keep the nonce check in there, for security reasons.

Any thoughts? I have doublechecked and have not strayed from what you have suggested, other than excluding certain meta boxes from displaying based on “$meta_box[‘id’]” Which, now that I think about it, is exactly why it is failing. The loop in options_post is going through all the default metaboxes Since I have prevented some from being displayed, their nonce doesn’t exist on my edit page, so the nonce check fails for those missing boxes.

So, the question is, how do I display working metaboxes for only those metaboxes I want?

Rich, see line 56 to 59 in the article above, the loop goes through the meta boxes by name, do a var_dump() of the array and see what the names are, then create a custom array and only use the names for the meta boxes you want to appear.

I still don’t think that will work. I can easily choose the metaboxes I want to appear or not appear. The problem is that in save_meta() in options_post.php, the loop is:

$post_options->meta_boxes doesn’t have anything to do with what I have decided should appear on my edit page. Or am I missing something? Even if I create a custom array (as opposed to skipping the add_meta_box() function call based on the metabox name / id), that custom array doesn’t equal the array that is being looped through in save_meta() in options_post.php.

From what I understand, $post_options->meta_boxes will contain all of the metaboxes, regardless of what I have decided to display? So, the nonce will fail when the loop in options_post.php is on a metabox in $post_options->meta_boxes that is not in the set of metaboxes I have elected to display on my custom post edit screen.

If I include ALL metaboxes, as is coded in lines 56-59, the meta information saves fine. It only fails if I decided to exclude anything.

Unless the scope of $post_options->meta_boxes in save_meta() (options_post.php) is different than I understand?

As reference, here is the code I am using that does display the metaboxes I want, yet will not save/update the metadata entered into the metaboxes. If I remove the if statement (so, including all metaboxes), the meta data saves fine:

Rich, I see what you mean… how about this (just pseudo code, you’ll have to adjust and test):

Smart man! I think that will work. I will give it a try and get back to you.

Dimas – You definitely pointed me in the right direction.

The trouble is the [expected-value]. During the save_meta() function call, the nonces are verified via:

So, when creating the [expected-value], you need to use the same $action argument that the save_meta() function is using. Since my save_post action is called from custom_functions.php, and the save_meta() function is called from options_post.php, plugin_basename(__FILE__) will be different, and the nonce would fail.

So, I did some ugliness (hard coded the path to the options_post.php file) to make it work for now, but here it is:

Note: during all of this, I realized that line 61 of your original post is not necessary. The action to save meta data during save_post had already been called. It isn’t necessary to call it again.

I also removed line 48, adding the action to admin_menu. Instead, I call the function that adds the meta boxes via the ‘register_meta_box_cb’ argument of register_post_type, which is called during ‘init’

Rich, glade you got it all working, there typically is always a way to solve a problem, just have to look at it from different angles … in terms of your hard coded issue you may try the following an see if that creates an accurate nonce:

Mark B

I know this post is nearly a year old now but I have a question that i can’t seem to find an answer to.

I have multiple custom post types and I wish to add the thesis seo and meta boxes to all of them but I get a repeat error when I do. The first is fine and works perfectly using the code above. Unfortunately I cannot find a way to duplicate this for my other custom post types. Can anyone shed some light on this?

@Mark B, try the following (adjust the $post_types array) …

Idris

great tutorial…thank you for sharing

Kimberly Castleberry

Great tutorial. Stopped by your blog after hyperarts linked to you and definitely will be back. I do a lot with thesis and so these kinda things come in handy. Kim PS: You asked in another post about spam control. I’ve had trouble with spamfree so I rely heavily on GASP (growmaps anti spambot plugin) which works well for stopping bot traffic.

@Kim, thanks for your comment, I will definitely checkout GASP, spamfree worked really well, but recently has started to let more SPAM comments through (akismet still catches them, but just more for me to deal with).

barefoot

Thanks very much for this. The menu showed up fine. I reset the permalinks. Now, I’m curious, since I didn’t CPT up when I first started (it’s a recipe blog), and now I’ve added a new ‘recipes’ CPT; do I just go in and transfer the content from the regular post type in to the custom recipe post type? And then erase original post?

Raymund

Hi, do you have a tutorial on how to reverse the chronology of posts in the homepage from the oldest to the newest? Thanks.

exedesign

Hello, Great custom meta box helper code you got here. I have been checking out your tool, but I wonder do I need to separately create custom post type or is there a better way to do it within your tools? I have seen other that get you everything (post types and metaboxes in one place: http://wp.tutsplus.com/tutorials/creative-coding/custom-post-type-helper-class/ )

If you are referring to wpalchemy, it is only specific to meta box creation.

How to Update Thesis?

I’m new to Wordpress, and I’m trying to take over maintenance of an existing blog. It uses the Thesis theme.

However, it appears that Thesis has been retired, or sold, or something. The only site I can find is -

  • which states confusingly:

“We do not sell Thesis directly, but you’ll be happy to know that **Thesis technology is included in the Focus WordPress Theme”

Is Thesis dead? Can I use Focus to update my Thesis blog?

Would appreciate some help on this. Thanks in advance.

I’ve never used Thesis, but it looks like some kind of abstraction layer built on top of WordPress.

Since it looks like a custom way of interacting with WordPress content, I’d recommend reaching out to the Thesis community. From the website homepage, it looks like whoever purchased the Focus theme (the original developer? the site owner?) should have a login for that forum:

Once you become a Focus customer, you’ll gain access to the DIYthemes forums and an entire community of people who are focused on getting the most out of their websites. – https://diythemes.com/

Thank you - I’m a Wordpress novice, but I’m pretty sure Thesis is (was?) a “custom theme,” as I understand that concept. Note that Thesis is reviewed (and described) in detail here:

However, Thesis seems to have vanished as a purchasable custom theme, and perhaps has been superseded by “Focus”? That’s what I’m trying to get a handle on. I’m not sure I want to spend $87 for a license to Focus just to get that question answered, and I’m not sure I want to use Focus as the “new” theme when I update Thesis on my current site.

I just want to understand - what the heck happened to Thesis?

Note that this page states “This is the Thesis pricing page that was active from March 29, 2008, through January 25, 2019,” which suggests that it was no longer updated/sold after January 2019. https://diythemes.com/plans/

Any additional help on this would be appreciated, since I’m really struggling!

I think that it doesn’t really exist as a business entity due to various licensing questions. For more backstory, you might take a look a this blog post by Mark Jaquith:

I can’t really say what the best way to go is for you and this site. I know that you’re just dipping your toes into WordPress, and this site sounds like it might be a tricky one to be given.

My gut reaction would be to try and move away from the theme for this site, but that will be dictated by a bunch of external factors.

I would start by asking yourself a few things about this project:

As the new maintainer of the site, what does that entail? Simple things like writing new blog posts, or more advanced things like updates to the theme, or integrating more advanced features?

If you’re just writing new posts, maybe you can get away with the status quo. If you are doing more advanced things, then eventually the lack of theme support will likely trip you up.

I’m assuming this is for a paying client – do you think they have the bandwidth to pay for a re-design? Are you able to pitch and sell them on the work needed to make the site not rely on Thesis?

You might be able to work on the site for a while and get a feel for where the pain points are and then use that to make the case for a re-design. Something like “I did this work which should have taken only an hour, but because of ___ it ended up taking 3 hours.”

Hope that helps give you more to think of! Good luck!

Focus WordPress Theme

Focus is the world’s fastest and smartest WordPress Theme .

It’s also the only WordPress Theme designed for the way internet behavior has changed in the age of social media.

I built it because WordPress websites are fundamentally broken—they’re slow, clunky, hard to manage, and grossly overcomplicated.

It’s time for a generational change. It’s time for Focus.

WordPress sites are slow. Focus makes your site fast .

Because it runs on my Thesis platform, Focus inherits optimizations and performance benefits no other WordPress Theme can match:

  • perfect HTML enhanced with structured data
  • the most optimized CSS that has ever existed
  • darn-near-magical design and display options

Data-driven for Easier Management 📊

Typical WordPress Themes run on files , and this means the bulk of your customizations will involve futzing with files and code.

Focus runs on data , which enables you to make changes through a simple UI instead of messing with files, code, or needing to hire a developer to perform otherwise-intuitive modifications.

You can quite literally do more with Focus, and you can do it faster!

Smarter Design Customizations 🧠

Focus is built on the Golden Ratio Typography design system , which gives it serious superpowers.

When you make a change—to a primary font size, for example—Focus smartly adjusts everything else in your design to accommodate this change. It’s basically AI for your design!

Designed for the Social Media Age 🤳

“Modern” WordPress Themes have it all wrong. They’re still designed for the previous era where blogs reigned and people actually browsed websites.

In the social media age, nobody does this anymore. We browse social media and occasionally click through to websites, but we don’t really browse sites anymore.

In other words, when we visit websites, we are looking for specific information . If the website doesn’t deliver quickly and clearly, we’ll leave and return to the dopamine-friendly social media environment.

Focus is designed around the transactions that take place in the social media age. When you visit a website, you want an immediate payoff for what you hoped to find.

But if the site is slow, busy, or otherwise gets in your way, you’re out of there!

Focus delivers clear results on all devices , which means your site will look great and work perfectly no matter how a person gets there.

Slow sites suck. Focus makes yours fast.

  • blazing speed that delights visitors
  • responsive and consistent design on all devices
  • optimized for both search engines and people
  • highly customizable without wrecking performance
  • easy to manage over time

[00:00:00] Josepha: Hello, everyone, and welcome to the WordPress Briefing, the podcast where you can catch quick explanations of the ideas behind the WordPress open source project, some insight into the community that supports it, and get a small list of big things coming up in the next two weeks. I’m your host, Josepha Haden Chomphosy. Here we go.

[00:00:28] (Music intro)

[00:00:39] Josepha: It’s been a while since I talked to you about the digital divide. In case you’re a brand new listener, check out episode 17, and actually everyone, just go check out episode 17 because bridging the digital divide, teaching people how to embrace technology fully and how to make it work for you, is one of the primary motivators of my decisions in WordPress.

[00:01:02] Josepha: WordPress’s unique position as both a tool that’s ubiquitous in its use and a community that is all-encompassing in its skill set means that if you know a bit about how open source works, you can use it as a tool to learn digital literacy and practice technical skills. Even though this is one of my primary motivators, I have never actually succeeded at getting WordPress into schools.

It’s not for lack of trying, it’s not for lack of interest from the community; it’s more that it’s hard to fit into curriculum-based learning. After all, we’ve had ways to learn WordPress for as long as we’ve had ways to use WordPress. It’s just that it takes a long time to design instructional material, even when you know the content like the back of your hand.

And open source stuff just moves really quickly. However, that didn’t stop us from spending years refining the content that we do have into the learning pathways you can now find on learn.WordPress.org. If you’re an educator, you can use those almost out of the box. But if you’ve got learners in your home and want to make a case for why their school should bring a little WordPress based digital literacy into the classroom, I’ve got five good arguments for you for why they should give us a chance.

[00:02:16] Josepha: The first one, as I mentioned before, WordPress as a tool is practically ubiquitous. It powers a significant portion of the web, so it’s easy to find examples to aspire to and content creators for guidance. And given that it is so prevalent, knowing WordPress ensures that students are well prepared for a wide range of job opportunities in the digital industry, making them more competitive in the job market overall.

Second is that WordPress is a free and open source piece of software. In our case, it’s free in both meanings of the word. Free, as in no cost and no constraints. That means students have freedom to experiment with the code and with the design, which gives you that feeling of joyous experimentation that a lot of us had at the start of the web before there were CMSs. It taps into a different kind of creativity that results in technical curiosity and, ultimately, growth.

[00:03:13] Josepha: The third thing is that the best way to learn WordPress happens to also align with the concept of project-based learning, which is one of the best methods for learning in general. I believe that to be true. I’m not an educator, but I really believe that project-based learning is the best way to learn complex topics. It’s an active way to learn. You get a bunch of tactical skills in there, like development, alongside the basics of good collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Obviously, these are all skills that are directly valuable in the workplace, but I have also found them profoundly useful in my day-to-day existence. You know, as a human participating in a society.

Number four is a bit of a spicy nugget, but WordPress is essential for creating and managing digital content, which is table stakes right now. That’s a foundational skill for most web dev jobs, but also marketing, journalism, and communications. And beyond that, everyone knows that your best leaders are the people who can tell a compelling story based on the information they have. The ones who can connect the dots in a way that makes it matter to you. This is a spicy, of course, because of the confusing do si do that AI is taking with the content landscape. But I believe that people are the best storytellers, and stories are what keep us all moving forward.

[00:04:34] Josepha: And then the final thing is that there is a whole wide world of open source. There are so many products and projects that use an open source license, right? Like you, listener, I can guarantee I don’t even know who you are, but I can guarantee that you use at least one item a day that has some open source thing in it.

And most of these open source projects are international. They’re developed on a global scale across numerous countries by people with various levels of education. And it’s this vastness of scope, this broadness of connection, that will give you, give your student, a chance to understand how to work across cultures, how to build something that is more than the sum of its parts, and how to embrace the concept of altruistic generosity that leads to a triumph of the commons.

[00:05:26] Josepha: Because just as I’m sure that you, a complete stranger, touched something open source today, I’m equally sure that the people we bring into open source will be able to solve the biggest problems of tomorrow with better connections and more skill because of what we taught them here today. If all of this sounds compelling, but you’re not ready to, like, go into your school administrator, your superintendent, your local, I don’t know, education board.

If this felt right, but you don’t know for sure, and you want a little bit more experience with it before you go advocate for it yourself, I will have in the show notes over on WordPress.org, I’ll have in the show notes of this podcast a series of events that are coming up. We have a couple that have already gone by WPCampus, I think just wrapped up a few weeks ago. But there are a handful of events that are happening across the world that is specific to youth wanting to learn technology, working with WordPress to get that done.

[00:06:26] Josepha: And then educators as well. You can also always stop by the Training Team and ask them questions about how this all works, why it works together their philosophies behind their learning pathways. There are so many ways that you can get answers to the questions that you might have about why open source, and especially WordPress, is worth trying to get your students exposed to and working in and contributing to.

[00:06:52] (Music interlude)

[00:06:59] Josepha: That brings me, now that I have finished with my little soapbox, to our small list of big things. Gosh, I hope you all missed hearing teeny tiny rants about WordPress and open source from me over the break that I took in August, but before you respond to that, feel free to respond to me in any comments. Let’s first get to the small list of big things.

[00:07:23] Josepha: First up, the full WordCamp US schedule has been released, so if you’re planning to attend that, you can take a look and get your schedule, your personal schedule, for the week figured out. But if you’re still on the fence, there might be a speaker or two in there that tips the scales for you.

The next thing is that the WordPress Contributor Mentorship Program Cohort number three, the third one, will happen in Q4 this year. The call for mentors and mentees has just been completed. But you should keep an eye out on September 9th, I think. So, at the end of this week, the final list will be announced. This program has been excellent for mentors to give back to the community while enhancing their leadership skills. And the mentees who participate have received personalized guidance and a chance to develop skills and network within the community, and a good portion of them continue to contribute to WordPress itself and other open source projects that we rely on as well.

[00:08:20] Josepha: The third thing is that YouTube has been an essential platform for sharing complex ideas with a diverse audience. And our WordPress YouTube channel is no exception. It has been slowly warming itself up. We have a team that’s warming up the content over there. WordCamp information gets on it now. But in keeping with our commitment to meeting the needs of both current and future users, just making sure that we meet people where they are, I’m excited to announce that Jamie Marsland will be taking on the management of the WordPress YouTube channel. So for anyone who’s attending WordCamp US, stop by and say hello to Jamie in person.

And then, finally, I have a really important call to action. So, we are still working to reactivate our meetup groups. The Community Team is driving that charge, and they need your help to reactivate any group that’s inactive. Last month, a list of groups was shared and marked for removal from our chapter program. And we requested responses by August 5th to keep those groups active, but due to the summer holiday, we have extended it a little bit. We’ve extended it to September 16th, which, if I am remembering my calendar correctly, is a couple weeks from now. So if your group is on that pending closure list, email [email protected] to let us know if you want to reactivate the group or if you are ready to step down and have a new leader show up, and we can help you figure out how to get that done. Either way, if you’re on the list, email us let us know what your hopes and, dreams, and plans are there.

[00:09:58]  Josepha:  That, my friends, is your small list of big things. Don’t forget to follow us on your favorite podcast app or subscribe directly on WordPress.org/news. You’ll get a friendly reminder whenever there’s a new episode. If you liked what you heard today, share it with a fellow WordPresser or future WordPresser. But if you have any questions about what you heard, then you can share those with me at [email protected]. I am your host, Josepha Haden Chomphosy. I’m so glad to be back. Thank you for tuning in today for the WordPress Briefing, and I’ll see you again in a couple of weeks.

The uneven U

Publishers often send me academic writing books to review. I happily look through every book, but if I think I can’t wholeheartedly recommend it, I just don’t write a review. I don’t want to crush a fellow author’s soul. The rejected titles sit sadly, in small piles of guilt, on the bottom of one of ... continue reading .

Academic cyborgs and bullshit reading.

The other day, my good friend Professor Narelle Lemon sent me a link to an academic paper called “AI and its implications for research in higher education: a critical dialogue”  because it cited … one of my old blog posts. Why you can’t get chattieg to ‘sound good’..

For about 10 years now, I’ve had a profitable side hustle teaching writing. By now regular readers will know I’m obsessed with how academics work. Maybe it’s because I’m constantly trying to figure out how to work better myself (aren’t we all?). More thoughts on the enshittification of academic social media

A couple of months ago I wrote a post called ‘The enshittification of academic social media’, riffing on ideas put in the world by Cory Doctorow.
