15 ways to use social media for education

Written by by Jamia Kenan

With remote learning and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), social media is an integral part of education more than ever. There are many different ways to use social media for education inside and outside the classroom.

Because we believe in the power of social media to make nearly anything easier, we will share 15 ways to use social media for education, based on insights shared with us from top institutions.

Benefits of social media in education

Here are our top three benefits of using social media in education:

Benefit 1: Extends learning opportunities

Social media unleashes more learning opportunities. Online classes and remote jobs are the new norm, so teaching students to work from a distance becomes a necessity for digital literacy and preparing them for their careers. Social media platforms support educators in various ways from sharing announcements to holding live lectures.

Benefit 2: Create connections with students and alumni

Social provides a way for institutions to quickly and directly communicate with students, faculty, staff and alumni, fostering connections across various audiences. Social content can attract prospective students, keep parents informed, grow alumni networks, promote on-campus events and more.

Focusing on nurturing community and publishing engaging content can also help increase enrollment. According to our Higher Education Social Media Benchmarks for 2023 report, 41% of school officials can directly attribute increased enrollment to social strategy.

For example, Keele University said their campus photos on Instagram help students solidify their college decision. One student came to the university because she saw their posts on Facebook and it helped confirm her decision, later becoming a digital ambassador for the school.

Benefit 3: Build brand identity

Social supports and amplifies university branding . University marketing teams use social media to maintain a positive brand reputation for their institutions. With the right strategy, colleges and universities can attract more students, increase endowments, promote events or initiatives and improve alumni relations.

Social media in the classroom

From preschool to college, there are so many methods for using social media in the classroom to communicate and educate. Here are seven ways to use social media in the classroom across platforms:

1. Use posts to broadcast updates and alerts

Instructors and colleges can meet students where they are by incorporating social media platforms they’re likely already familiar with like Facebook or X (formerly known as Twitter).

Have students follow a class Facebook Page or join a Facebook Group to view posts about course updates, homework assignments and tests. Universities can have publicly accessible pages dedicated to specific schools or departments that students can see even if they aren’t active on Facebook.

When using social media for education, it’s important to maintain a professional boundary. Email students a direct link to the Facebook Group for access and avoid sending friend requests. Groups are the perfect “home base,” especially for online courses because it makes it easy to connect with students. Similarly, instructors and departments can use Posts on X to keep students informed.

2. Use live streaming for lectures and discussions

Instructors can use Facebook Groups, Instagram Live, YouTube Live or LinkedIn Live to stream lectures and facilitate more accessible learning. If a student can’t come to the lecture hall, they can join online or review later. Adding live captions helps students who may be deaf or hard of hearing, non-native speakers, or learn visually. And platforms like Instagram and YouTube allow live streams to be recorded, providing students with review material for midterms and finals season.

Recorded live streams also widen the institution’s reach and authority by making lectures available to scholars and professors from other colleges, states or countries.

3. Use X for class updates and more

X is a great option for providing quick updates and reminders to students. Teachers can create a single handle per class and reuse it every year, or they can create a new handle each school year. Use X threads to share resources like practice quizzes, interesting perspectives or thought-provoking quotes to foster critical thinking. Hashtags can mark specific discussions or chats with guest speakers.

4. Create a class blog for discussions and cross-channel learning

Blogs are another great outlet for incorporating social media in the classroom. Students can link to the class blog on other social channels. For example, a student might share a photo from their visual essay on LinkedIn to attract the attention of recruiters for job or internships. Using blogs as a semester-long assignment can improve students’ short-form writing and critical thinking.

Don’t feel limited to just an English or writing class; this use of social media in education can be transferred across all subjects. There are also several platforms professors can use to create class blogs, such as Tumblr, Medium or WordPress. The course syllabus, updates and resources can be shared on the blog as well.

5. Use Instagram for digital storytelling

Have students practice storytelling on Instagram by creating class-specific accounts where they can present photos or graphics (and delete them once the course is over, if they so choose). This can work especially well in visual-heavy classes: Have photojournalism students post essays or challenge the social media marketing class to create a faux-brand campaign.

6. Create a class-specific Pinterest board

Educators can use Pinterest to prepare and organize resources, lesson plans and worksheets for their classes in one place. They can also set up Pinterest boards for each of their classes and save pins that are relevant to lessons.

Create boards according to class or subject, and create sub-topic boards for weekly units, projects or worksheets. Pinterest can also be useful for students to curate a digital bibliography for research projects, papers or group assignments. Students can pin websites, books or videos to a board on a single topic and refer back to it when it’s time to write an essay or thesis.

7. Prep for post-graduation and create alumni relationships

LinkedIn can help current students develop networking skills, craft their personal brand and connect with alumni. Flexing these career muscles could help them earn internships, gain mentors and secure job offers before they walk across the stage on graduation day.

Institutions can use LinkedIn for university colleges as well.  For example, a business school may have several private LinkedIn Groups for regional alumni chapters to connect them with students and faculty for internships, fundraising, volunteer opportunities and events.

Encouraging students to post relevant articles, projects and research, internship experiences and other academic accomplishments helps the university develop social proof on the platform. This is also an excellent example of the importance of incorporating advocacy into your social strategy.

Social media for education marketing

Just as there were many ways to use social media in the classroom, there are also many uses for social media in education marketing. Social media marketing can help if you’re looking to reach a larger audience for your college or university. Let’s dive into how social media can empower education marketing.

8. Leverage TikTok creators and influencers for user-generated content

Although many public universities have banned TikTok from campus Wi-fi , some educators and institutions embrace the app to educate and connect with students. Student and teacher influencers can provide user-generated content that satisfies a prospective student’s desire to see authentic content from their peers and future professors.

For example, Chapman University professor @itsmattprince went viral after challenging his class to earn 1 million likes on a TikTok video in exchange for canceling their final:

Screenshot of Chapman University professor @itsmattprince's video about his class assignment where he challenged his students to earn 1 million likes on TikTok.

Fun, yet real-world applications like this illustrate the power of social influence—plus who doesn’t love a canceled final?

9. Include social media links on your school website

In the Higher Education Social Media Benchmarks for 2023 report, we found that 68% of high school students use social channels to research schools. Many parents and prospective students will check a school’s website first if they’re interested, and offering even more ways to follow the school creates a different insight into campus life.

Make it easy for parents and students to find your school’s social media profiles by adding links to the website’s main navigation or creating a social media directory that houses them all in one place.

10. Give a glimpse into student life through photo and video

If you want to attract new students and parents to your school, share photos of campus events to showcase what they could expect. Use short-form video like Reels, TikTok or YouTube Shorts to help prospective students envision themselves attending college there.

Highlighting events, sports, extracurriculars and the beauty of campus can make your school stand out from the rest. While school and university websites tend to follow the same mold, social media allows you to be more unique and casual like this Barbenheimer-inspired post from the University of Georgia:

An University of Georgia Instagram post featuring two photos from the student section on game day for football. The top photo features students in pink body paint and the bottom photo shows students in black and red body paint. The caption reads, "One ticket for Barbie please. One ticket for Oppenheimer please."

11. Create alumni community groups

Many alumni want to remain involved with their alma mater after graduation. Creating a dedicated community via Facebook Groups or LinkedIn Groups can increase engagement.

For example, the University of Newcastle has over 148,000 alumni. Their team features current students, staff and alumni to amplify the career opportunities that manifest from being part of their community.

Alumni groups, groups for different graduating classes or departments, and groups for different extracurriculars and organizations allow former and current students to engage and meet others with common interests. Take a look at our alumni engagement best practices guide to learn more ways to keep the school spirit flowing.

12. Incorporate a social media crisis strategy

How would you communicate to the entire campus during an emergency? Whether it’s a fire, tornado or other immediate campus emergency, a social media crisis plan can help institutions proactively prepare. Keep parents and students updated on the situation by sharing information about the crisis and if authorities are involved. Many campuses have automated messaging alerts set up, but using social also enables people to be updated in real time.

Institutions can use social listening , which involves analyzing conversations and trends related to your brand , to aid with public relations crisis management plans. Seneca College leveraged Sprout’s capabilities a few years ago when 12,000 staff members went on strike. Using Brand Keywords and the Smart Inbox, the social media team was able to sort through and respond to a deluge of inbound feedback from concerned students.

13. Use chatbots to support students outside of office hours

In our higher education social media playbook , we talk about the importance of social customer service. Using automated replies or chatbots can help the student body get their questions answered immediately, or at least guide them to a solution faster.

Keele University used chatbots via Sprout’s Bot Builder to respond immediately to common questions about courses and bursary information. In the five months after using chatbots, nearly 500 conversations addressed a variety of topics from housing applications to international student services.

14. Iterate social strategy to create student-centric content

Using social media for education allows educators and marketers to meet students where they are by connecting on channels they use everyday. Social creates an opportunity for institutions to be more even more student-centric. But to keep students engaged, institutions will need to produce content that caters to the wants and needs of their audience(s).

If you want to manage your institution’s social channels successfully, you’ll need to iterate and improve your strategy by reviewing the top and lowest performing content.

Dartmouth College uses Sprout’s Sent Messages report to determine content performance and iterate their overall social strategy as needed. After reviewing which posts performed well, they schedule new posts with similar content to inform their content calendar.

15. Manage your communities all under one roof

Social media empowers universities to bring their various audiences together. Many institutions have an extensive community of prospective and current students, faculty, staff and alumni, but this causes a common pain point: decentralization.

Since colleges and universities have multiple social media accounts, it can be difficult to manage them all seamlessly. However, using a social media management software centralizes multiple networks in one place, so overseeing various accounts becomes more manageable and scalable.

Texas A&M University , one of the largest public universities in the nation, uses social media to connect with these various communities. The university has hundreds of departments, 16 colleges and 19 NCAA sports, so using a social media management tool is essential. Their social team uses Sprout’s publishing suite to discuss strategy, collaborate on content creation and provide feedback to interns all on one platform. In just six months, between August 2020 and January 2021,  Texas A&M earned over 131 million impressions and 8.3 million content engagements across X, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram.

A tool like Sprout Social can help make social media management a breeze, regardless of whether you’re a solo marketer or a full marketing department. Multiple users can use the Sprout platform to create content with consistent messaging and schedule posts across networks at the best time using our ViralPost® feature .

And the Post Performance report takes the guesswork out of identifying what content resonates because teams can pinpoint top posts and view engagement across channels.

A Sprout Post Performance report that includes impressions, potential reach, engagements and engagement rate per impression percentage for each post within a 30-day time frame.

Sprout enables you to monitor and manage multiple accounts across different networks, which is ideal for educational institutions. Each department or teacher at your school might have their own separate social media accounts for specific information, and a social media management tool can help you ensure the right posts are going out on each of these accounts.

And if there is news or content relevant to multiple departments, Sprout enables users to share the same content across multiple profiles with a single click.

Social media and education

UQ people Published 2 Aug, 2020  ·  2-minute read

Is screen time really idle time? What can teachers learn from the way people use digital platforms and how it shapes their learned behaviour? How can social media be used in education?

How is social media used by students?

Social media and education may seem like polar opposite at times. However, not all students use the available channels as a source of procrastination or a platform for spreading unverified theories. In fact,  Dr Simone Smala , a senior lecturer in the UQ School of Education, has observed important links between the likes of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and common human environments for learning.

“Who’d have thought that a trending social media phenomenon and educational psychology were linked?” she says.

“It’s amazing how much of what we see teaches us lessons on a daily basis. My teaching area is educational psychology, where we look at different learning theories and I’m fascinated by how learning happens in so many different places. Social media platforms are a prime example of that."

"We can observe how fundamental ideas in learning theories play out on social media. These are theories that I use to equip my students to be educators of tomorrow.”

Dr Simone Smala stands smiling in front of a light-filled staircase

The positive impact of social media on education

One theory is that humans learn most noticeably through observing social processes, linked to situations, environments and actions that feel familiar. This would certainly add weight to the notion that not all scroll time is detrimental and demonstrate why social media is important for students. It also opens up discussion about social media as an educational tool.

“Take the Bin Isolation Outing on social media… where people were dressing up in costumes or making elaborate videos of themselves putting their rubbish bins outside when COVID-19 restrictions were at their highest,” says Simone.

“It’s deeper than people being playful or silly. It’s about feeling part of something larger on a community or global stage. It connects people. There are messages in the Bin Isolation Outing posts about kindness, of being helpful, appreciating others, and sharing in the fact we are social animals who enjoy interaction."

"It may be unintended, but it is via phenomena like this that young people look for messages or guidance of how to be an adult, how to hold yourself and how to communicate with others.”

As with other forms of communication, the Bin Isolation Outing quickly developed in its complexity and took on new meanings as it was disseminated more widely and commonly. The trending behaviour may have started with a single post, but it was in the many responses where the meaningfulness of the activity was placed in its full context.

“People watched others and learned how to create posts that attracted attention. The learning occurred organically and vicariously,” says Simone.

“When people first saw the trend, it really resonated with them and it provided a stimulus for them to take it upon themselves, do something, and add to the dialogue."

“As an educator, you step back and analyse what were the messages and emotions that were conveyed and how did it grasp people’s attention enough to want to respond."

Simone says one of her guiding tenets is to consider students not just as previously empty vessels filled with meaning and content, but as apprentices to a new world who shape the future through their interactions and the personal characteristics they bring.

“I think each village was meant to feel pity for its own sick and poor whom it can help and I doubt if it is the duty of any private person to fix his mind on ills which he cannot help. This may even become an escape from the works of charity we really can do to those we know. God may call any one of us to respond to some far away problem or support those who have been so called. Quotes For Students

“You have to get over the fear of facing the worst in yourself. You should instead fear unexamined racism. Fear the thought that right now, you could be contributing to the oppression of others and you don't know it. But do not fear those who bring that oppression to light. Do not fear the opportunity to do better.” — Ijeoma Oluo, So You Want to Talk About Race

Do not fear the opportunity to do better.” — Ijeoma Oluo, So You Want to Talk About Race

“In a society that functions optimally, those who can should naturally want to provide for those who can't. That's how it's designed to work. I truly believe we're here to take care of one another.” — LeVar Burton

“The death penalty is not about whether people deserve to die for the crimes they commit. The real question of capital punishment in this country is, Do we deserve to kill?” — Bryan Stevenson , Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption

Quotes on Systemic Injustice

“Our problems stem from our acceptance of this filthy, rotten system.” — Dorothy Day

“Our problems stem from our acceptance of this filthy, rotten system.” — Dorothy Day

“Colorful demonstrations and weekend marches are vital but alone are not powerful enough to stop wars. Wars will be stopped only when soldiers refuse to fight, when workers refuse to load weapons onto ships and aircraft, when people boycott the economic outposts of Empire that are strung across the globe.” — Arundhati Roy, Public Power in the Age of Empire

“There is no such thing as nonracist or race-neutral policy. Every policy in every institution in every community in every nation is producing or sustaining either racial inequity or equity between racial groups.” — Ibram X. Kendi, How to Be an Antiracist

On Maintaining Hope in the Face of Injustice

“When asked if I am pessimistic or optimistic about the future, my answer is always the same: If you look at the science about what is happening on earth and aren’t pessimistic, you don’t understand data. But if you meet the people who are working to restore this earth and the lives of the poor, and you aren’t optimistic, you haven’t got a pulse. What I see everywhere in the world are ordinary people willing to confront despair, power, and incalculable odds in order to restore some semblance of grace, justice, and beauty to this world.” — Paul Hawken

“There is always light, if only we're brave enough to see it. If only we are brave enough to be it.” — Amanda Gorman

On the Injustice of Poverty

“Innovation comes, in science, by the people who are able to pull something apart with such insight and knowledge that they can then innovate, and they can create new — it’s how we make progress. And I think the same is true in the justice sector, that we cannot make progress in creating a more just society, healthier communities, if we allow ourselves to be disconnected from the people who are most vulnerable — from the poor, the neglected, the incarcerated, the condemned. If you’re trying to make policies in the criminal justice space but have never met someone who’s in a jail or prison, you haven’t been to a jail or prison, you’re going to fail.” — Bryan Stevenson

“I think sometimes, when you’re trying to do justice work, when you’re trying to make a difference, when you’re trying to change the world, the thing you need to do is get close enough to people who are falling down, get close enough to people who are suffering, close enough to people who are in pain, who’ve been discarded and disfavored — to get close enough to wrap your arms around them and affirm their humanity and their dignity.” — Bryan Stevenson

“In this increasingly interconnected world, we must understand that what happens to poor people is never divorced from the actions of the powerful. Certainly, people who define themselves as poor may control their own destinies to some extent. But control of lives is related to control of land, systems of production, and the formal political and legal structures in which lives are enmeshed. With time, both wealth and control have become increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few. The opposite trend is desired by those working for social justice.” — Paul Farmer

“Rebellion is the only thing that keeps you alive.” — Marianne Faithful

“The opposite of poverty is not wealth. In too many places, the opposite of poverty is justice.” — Bryan Stevenson

“Public education does not exist for the benefit of students or the benefit of their parents. It exists for the benefit of the social order. We have discovered as a species that it is useful to have an educated population. You do not need to be a student or have a child who is a student to benefit from public education. Every second of every day of your life, you benefit from public education. So let me explain why I like to pay taxes for schools, even though I don't personally have a kid in school: It's because I don't like living in a country with a bunch of stupid people.” — John Green

“I sometimes see people say that social change is impossible. But this is just not true. Social change is INEVITABLE. What isn’t inevitable is the timbre and shape of that social change, which we decide together.” — John Green

“In these days of difficulty, we Americans everywhere must and shall choose the path of social justice…, the path of faith, the path of hope, and the path of love toward our fellow man.” — Franklin D. Roosevelt

“By acting compassionately, by helping to restore justice and to encourage peace, we acknowledge that we are all part of one another.” — Ram Dass

“By acting compassionately, by helping to restore justice and to encourage peace, we acknowledge that we are all part of one another.” — Ram Dass

“Ours is not the struggle of one day, one week, or one year. Ours is not the struggle of one judicial appointment or presidential term. Ours is the struggle of a lifetime, or maybe even many lifetimes, and each one of us in every generation must do our part.” ‍ — John Lewis , Across That Bridge: A Vision for Change and the Future of America

18 Thought-Provoking Quotes About Social Media

Social media is a powerful, yet complex beast to tame. Namely, because it is constantly changing and developing. However, it now defines our life and almost everybody has an opinion about it... good or bad...

What are thought leaders saying about the technology that has become so central to business and our personal lives? Let's take a look 👀

It’s difficult to remember a time without social media, when we weren't connected at all times, just a tap of the finger away from all our favorite people and brands at any moment.

Social media has become society's central hub for sharing news, photos, feelings, and inspiration.

Seeing as it plays such a vital role in our work and personal lives, most people have an opinion about social media. Whether you love or hate it, you can’t deny that you have an opinion about it.

Social media platforms have changed the way we do business, consume content, spend our free time, and share our personal lives and opinions.

One social media post has the power to change people's lives, open up opportunities, launch small businesses , and start movements!

It's moved the way we communicated into a heavy focus on visual content, which has increased the value of and interest in graphic design and photography.

That being said, most industry leaders have had something to say about social media, offering interesting insights into and observations about contemporary culture.

To give you some food for thought and even maybe a chuckle, we've curated 16 thought-provoking social media quotes. Save them, share them and let them soak in!‌

Not communicating your messaging on social media platforms is no longer an option for businesses and leaders. It's where the people are and our most direct route of connecting with them.

It's up to businesses and marketers to deeply understand these platforms. We have to understand how to use them to their full capacity.

We have to employ both creativity and strategy to master the social media post and optimize our use of each platform.

social media in education quotes

While T.S Eliot died in 1965, these words from his 1936 poem ‘Burnt Norton’ have only become even more relevant today . In the poem, he says "moderns" are "distracted from distraction by distraction," which is precisely what social media arguably is today if we're not careful.

T.S Eliot obviously wasn't referring to social media when he wrote this (as it did not yet exist); he did make an accurate observation about modern culture that becomes more relevant with each passing year.

Social Media has a tendency to be addictive and over-indulged when we're not being very conscious and intentional with it.

While it's a powerful tool for marketing , spreading positive messaging, building businesses, creating community and sharing special moments, it also has the power to be a considerable distraction and time-waster.

It's all too easy to get lost down the rabbit holes of Tik-Tok, Instagram, and Pinterest, so it's up to both marketers and consumers to recognize when social media is just being a meaningless distraction and to stop, take a breath and reconnect with our intentions.

social media in education quotes

Germany Kent is a journalist who has said many profound things about social media, but this is possibly one of the most relevant - striking a chord with many who suffer with their mental health as a result of social media.

Social media shouldn’t be a place to share negativity, especially when targeted at others, so if you’re not getting any of the above from it, then perhaps it’s time to distance yourself from it for a while.

We hear more and more about the tragic consequences trolling and abuse can have , and it’s up to the individual to make wiser choices around how to behave online.

Like it or loathe it, there’s no escaping social media - it’s all around us. Whether you’re a marketer, a business owner or an individual, it affects you somehow.

The point is only to let it be a positive influence and tool in your life.

social media in education quotes

Social Media manager and entrepreneur Aaron Lee makes an important point about the speed with which eveything takes place on social media.

It has grown rapidly and beyond comprehension over the last decade.

With so many people using it, you have to be quick if you want to be noticed , otherwise, you’ll fade quickly down the feeds.

For social media managers, understanding the opportune time to post, which platform and how frequently can make a big difference in the effectiveness of your campaigns.

social media in education quotes

In this quote, sociologist and physician Nicholas Christakis brings to our attention that most people we are engaging with on social media platforms personally don't mean that much to us.

As the average person only actually has a handful of real friends in real life, it's not possible for us to have genuine relationships with all of our online "friends."

So what does this mean about the authenticity of our online engagements? Are they worth our efforts? Is it worth our time?

It’s very easy to get caught up in what others are doing, or at least what they say they’re doing, on social media.

People rarely share their dark news via social media, hence the ‘Instagram versus Reality’ posts you’ll see daily.

Perhaps next time you find yourself in the grips of envy towards people you don't even really know that well on social media, remember who your real friends are and share in their joy while sharing your own with them too.

social media in education quotes

Charles Leadbeater is a leading authority on innovation and creativity, and he makes a valuable point about how what we choose to share says a lot about us. We should be able to stand behind it with integrity.

There are a lot of personal choices to be made when sharing content online. Sharing positive messages, news and avoiding posts that cause harm or offense to others can help you get the most enjoyment out of social media.

Sharing the content that interests you is also a good way to develop relationships with others online and help discover some mutual interests.

Think about what you're sharing and following, and always ask whether it's an accurate representation of who you are.

social media in education quotes

Entrepreneur Jeffery Zeldman makes a good point.

For marketers, social media is an invaluable platform for reaching audiences .

But reaching those audiences is more difficult than it sounds. People want to be spoken to as humans in their own language, which means it’s important to connect with your audience in the right way.

Using bigger, ‘smarter’ words isn’t the way to win over your audience. It also doesn't help to use too many buzzwords or industry jargon.

social media in education quotes

Twitter is a powerful truth. When people want to confirm a rumor or find out the latest news, they’ll go to Twitter before anywhere else.

As well as being a news source, it serves as a place for debate and discussion . Or at least it could be.

In the quote above, author Lauren Leto points out how social media can be a tool for compelling and meaningful discussion. Yet, we allow our attention to be consumed by frivolous scandal and gossip, which is just perpetuating itself the more energy we give it.

There’s no denying the influence of celebrities on Twitter, but often it’s the glamorous side of life that makes that trending list, rather than the hard-hitting news and engaging discussions.

social media in education quotes

Founder of Convince and Convert, Jay Baer, reminds us in the quote above that the point of having followers n social media is to engage with them. It's meant to be a conversation and a community.

Whether you’re a business, an individual, a celebrity, or an influencer , the value of having a large following online is huge.

But it doesn’t mean anything if you don’t engage with them. Instead of worrying about your follower numbers, make sure you engage with them.

That’s where you’ll get the most value and trust, as opposed to empty likes and new follows.

social media in education quotes

The rest of the quote goes:

"If a character dies, it is gonna be the number one trending topic on Twitter, it is gonna be the top trending story on Facebook — and Reddit and Tumblr just turn into a completely uncensored memorial service of memes.

This happens all the time with sports results, but — I s*** you not — I once got a notification from the BBC News app saying that a character in a show I was watching had just died! I thought that news notifications are supposed to be for impending natural disasters, not for just ruining my bloody afternoon."

Social media can make a TV series (#LoveIsBlind anyone?), helping to build up hype and get everyone talking.

The activity around Game of Thrones was huge! But, as great as it can be for new discoveries, it is terrible if you’re even just seconds behind.

Avoid social media like the plague if you don’t want to know who scored or which Stark has just been killed off - nothing is safe when it comes to staying spoiler-free.

Dan Howell's opinion exposes one of the annoyances of social media in a slightly humorous way. This grievance speaks to the lack of boundaries that exist in the social media sphere.

Firstly- the blurred lines around what constitutes "news," and secondly, the often thoughtless sharing (oversharing?) that comes from both individuals and publications.

Social media is such a free space where pretty much anything can be said and shared.

The freedom of social media has made it necessary for us to establish our boundaries within this sphere- businesses and individuals alike.

social media in education quotes

In the early days of social media, it was barely used for marketing .

Flash forward to today, and it’s now one of the most popular tools used by businesses to market themselves.

In the quote above, author Ryan Lily uses the bicycle analogy to point out that social media is now the central marketing hub. It's where campaigns begin and end.

In fact, for many businesses, it’s the only way they’ll market themselves.

With social media being essentially free, it can provide a huge ROI when the message is right.

Even using more traditional marketing methods like print advertising, you can usually find a social handle included somewhere in the artwork.

social media in education quotes

Founder of Intuit, Scott Cook, points out the power consumers have on social media to set the tone for what is believed about a brand or person.

The power of social media can turn a brand into a sensation overnight. Take iconic British influencer Mrs. Hinch.

An ordinary woman from Essex who loves to keep her house clean, she’s amassed over 3.2m followers in just a couple of years - all through sharing cleaning tips and remaining humble, likable, and honest throughout.

But it’s the impact she has on other brands that’s interesting to see.

One recommendation can make a brand Insta-famous, leading to empty shelves, waiting lists, and a vast overnight following.

And that’s what word of mouth on social can do. It’s the audience who decides how something is talked about, and opinions are soon reciprocated and shared.

Through the power of influencers, brands can spread far and wide compared to their own social media efforts, introducing a whole new type of marketing to the game.

social media in education quotes

This is a great quote not only for marketers but for people across all businesses.

Founder and CEO of Hootsuite Ryan Holmes points out that social media has centralized basically all business functions.

Not only does social media provide an opportunity to market products and services on a daily basis, but it’s become a way to recruit employees, gather market research and feedback from customers, and collaborate with other brands.

While many businesses would have dismissed social media as a ‘time-wasting tool in the past, they’re certainly seeing the value now.

social media in education quotes

Has social media made us lazy? Thanks to the power of online recommendations, we no longer need to search for anything!

Twitter and Facebook will tell us what’s going on in the world, and our communities, while Instagram will help you decide what to buy!

Recommendations are big news online, and if a friend or relative recommends something to you on social media, you’re much more likely to give it a try.

Social media now (almost) does it all.

It isn't just about social media can offer you though, it is also about what you can bring to social media ... and how responsibly you use it too.

How well you do social media doesn't mean sitting there scrolling through your feed for hours and hours, it means using it effectively and efficiently.

social media in education quotes

Huffington Post CEO Ariana Huffington speaks to the collaborative nature of social media in the quote above.

Social media doesn’t just provide a way for people to find content to read, watch or listen to - it gives them the chance to create it too.

Individuals don’t need a big budget or a fancy graphic designer to make something work, a creative idea takes care of the hard work.

Sharing great content is the way to make discoveries, and businesses and marketers can learn a lot by sharing the great content of others.

social media in education quotes

The quote above is from Mark Zuckerberg the character in the social Network, not the actual real-life Mark Zuckerberg. The Social Network is an excellent film that makes some important commentary on social media.

If you needed to sum up the reason why we’re so invested in social media - this quote would be it.

Initially there to satisfy our curiosity about others, even if we’ve just met them, now it’s about something more than that.

We all know how awkward striking up a conversation with a stranger can be at a party or in a club. Still, social media has made it that much easier to develop connections and even build meaningful relationships.

social media in education quotes

If you haven't encountered any of Seth Godin's writing, you should check out his blogs or books, especially if you're in the marketing industry.

He's a well-renowned thought leader in marketing and places a huge emphasis on the value of storytelling in this industry.

Storytelling is a vital part of marketing in the social media world. In many situations, it’s not just highlighting the products you sell, but rather what you have to say.

Social media is a creative space perfectly suited for storytelling and story sharing, and this is how we truly connect an audience with a product.

When it comes to creating content for social media, allowing storytelling principles to guide you will lead to well-crafted and resonant content.

social media in education quotes

Author Mark Manson is famed for his strong opinion on all things culture. In the quote above, he speaks to the power of technology by pointing out how it has changed society.

This is particularly relevant to social media, which has indeed commoditized our time and completely shifted the landscape of business and marketing.

In his blog post on The Attention Economy , he points out how our attention and energy are being commoditized through social media platforms. It's an insightful piece worth a read!

social media in education quotes

Author, speaker, and CEO Amy Jo Martin makes an interesting statement in the above quote when she calls social media the "ultimate equalizer."

It brings businesses and consumers from all cultures across the world together into one platform where everybody potentially has an equal opportunity to express their voice, which is pretty incredible!

Social media is the ultimate equalizer. It gives a voice and a platform to anyone willing to engage.

Social Media In Education Quotes By David Chiles

Use Discretion: It is proper netiquette to use discretion, best behavior, in all online activity. — David Chiles

Social Media In Education Quotes By Narendra Modi

We must reach out to villages even in scorching heat with temperature upto 44 C. We must ensure that no girl child remains illiterate. I request all the social institutions and the media world to create a joyous environment for education in the month of June (when schools re-open), an environment to encourage children to go to school. We will derive the satisfaction of having done a social good. — Narendra Modi

Social Media In Education Quotes By Tucker Elliot

People have been fighting and dying over religion for thousands of years. I could understand that fear. It creeps up on you a bit more when you're alone in a foreign land. You certainly worry about it more when you walk the same streets as violent people that harbor a clear hatred of your beliefs and values. The reality is some Muslims in the world would kill me for being Christian, just as some Christians in the world would kill Maya, Gita, Farid and Ridwan for being Muslim. Nowadays news outlets and social media have reified that fear. It keeps some people focused and aware. It paralyzes others. It blinds some of us. That's what happened to me. It's why I felt the whole world shake. Twice. — Tucker Elliot

Social Media In Education Quotes By Piero Scaruffi

The cure to eliminate fake news is that people stop reading 140-character tweets and start reading 600-page books. — Piero Scaruffi

Social Media In Education Quotes By Ramani Durvasula

The democratization of media means that anyone with a phone can become a celebrity. Our short-sighted focus on self-esteem in children means that everyone gets a trophy, universities and education are "brands" instead of places of learning, standardized tests are used to assess wisdom, and grade inflation is rampant. The tribe has been replaced with followers and likes. Our economy, our bodies, our health, our children, and frankly our psyches are in big trouble. — Ramani Durvasula

Social Media In Education Quotes By Queen Rania Of Jordan

It's about using social media for social change: creating a community of advocates who can use their voices on behalf of the voiceless, or leverage their talents, skills, knowledge, and resources to put more children into classrooms, or pressure their elected representatives to get global education top of the agenda. — Queen Rania Of Jordan

Social Media In Education Quotes By Vint Cerf

One thing we know for sure is that the Web is a collaborative medium unlike any we've ever had before. We see people working together, playing together, interacting in social settings using these media. We hope that will emerge as the new tool for education. — Vint Cerf

Social Media In Education Quotes By Gunther Kress

The (nation) state's concern had been the development of citizens - social subjects whose identity was shaped by the goals of the state - and the preparation of a labour force serving the needs of a national economy and administration. That state was interested in cohesion, integration and homogeneity - however imperfectly realized. The globally framed interests of current versions of the market are neither about citizenship - shared social values, aspirations, dispositions - nor about the preparation of a labour force ... — Gunther Kress

Social Media In Education Quotes By David Batstone

As an organisation [Not for Sale] we use social media on a daily basis as a way to share the impact of how our support is having on individuals and communities. By building awareness, education and updating interested parties on the progress of the projects. — David Batstone

Social Media In Education Quotes By Galit Breen

I love social media. I love the connectivity it provides, the creativity it allows, and the breathtaking wealth of information we all have at our fingertips because of it. — Galit Breen

Social Media In Education Quotes By David Chiles

Courtesy and kindness cultivate confidence with good Netiquette. Doing things right makes you feel good. — David Chiles

Social Media In Education Quotes By Zoe Weil

Mogo living brings about true freedom. When you have the inner conviction to do the most good and the least harm, you are free to say no to media, social, and peer pressures. You are free from a nagging sense that your life does not have value or meaning. You are free to imagine and then create a truly successful (in the deepest meaning on the word) life. You are free to be at peace with yourself and all those whom your life touches. — Zoe Weil

Social Media In Education Quotes By H.G.Wells

But the old traditions of sectarian misdirection still in spite of a certain advance in technical efficiency, cripple and distort the general mind. "All that has been changed," cry indignant teachers under criticism. But the evidence that this teaching of theirs still fails to produce a public that is alert, critical, and capable of vigorous readjustment in the face of overwhelming danger, is to be seen in the newspapers that satisfy the Tewler public, the arguments and slogans that appeal to it, the advertisements that succeed with it, the stuff it swallows. It is a press written by Homo Tewler for Homo Tewler all up and down the scale. The Times Tewler, the Daily Mail Tewler, the Herald, the Tribune, the Daily Worker; there is no difference except a difference in scale and social atmosphere. Through them all ran the characteristic Tewler streak of willful ignorance, deliberate disingenuousness, and self-protective illusion. — H.G.Wells

Social Media In Education Quotes By Bernard Kelvin Clive

In this age, you must be relentlessly remarkable to stay relevant, if not you will be relegated. — Bernard Kelvin Clive

Social Media In Education Quotes By Gunther Kress

Shifting the frame only slightly, the choice of a theory from among the range of always ideologically founded theories is itself necessarily ideologically motivated. Positioning is unavoidable; positioning is the result of choice from among a range of possibilities; that choice is socially meaningful - it is ideological. — Gunther Kress

Social Media In Education Quotes By Mizuko Ito

Rather than assuming that education is primarily about preparing for jobs and careers, what would it mean to think of education as a process of guiding kids' participation in public life more generally, a public life that includes social, recreational, and civic engagement. — Mizuko Ito

Don't bother trying to explain your emotions. Live everything as intensely as you can and keep whatever you felt as a gift from God. The best way to destroy the bridge between the visible and invisible is by trying to explain your emotions." Author: Paulo Coelho

Funny Teacher Quotes

Laughter is contagious, and a funny teacher can lighten the mood and make learning more enjoyable for students, keeping them engaged and wanting to learn more.

A sense of humor in the classroom improves learners’ engagement, retention of learning, and student-teacher relationships. Also, embracing a sense of humor will make you less likely to experience burnout and stress, improving workplace quality.

Jokes and playful interactions help build a relaxed environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, expressing themselves, and taking risks.

Studies show that laughter can help students remember information better. It activates parts of the brain responsible for learning and makes connections with new material.

A healthy dose of laughter can help teachers and students cope with pressure and maintain a positive outlook.

Teacher Quotes About the Future

Teachers have a huge impact on their students’ futures. They equip students with the skills to succeed in life beyond school. For example, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration.

Teachers encourage students to take risks, try new things, and overcome challenges. This boosts their confidence and leads to higher self-esteem and a stronger foundation for future success.

Teachers don’t just teach subjects. They also teach valuable life skills like patience, perseverance, and responsibility, which are crucial for navigating life’s challenges and achieving one’s goals.

Students remember their inspiring teachers long after they’ve left the classroom. They carry the lessons learned throughout their lives.

Knowing your students personally helps you realize the kind of help they require to get them to their desired goals.

For instance, you can put them in contact with career advisors and mentors outside school who could guide them in their lives after school.

Investing in your students’ lives shows that you care. This is a way to inspire them to go for their dreams.

Some of the most successful people in the world owe their success to great teachers.

Here are a few highly successful people who credit their success to their teachers:

  • Stephen Hawking – The theoretical physicist and author was inspired by his teacher, Dikran Tahta , to do more mathematics and physics.
  • Bill Gates – This philanthropist and software developer, the co-founder of Microsoft, attributes his success to the guidance of his math and drama teachers .
  • The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets – Singh compiled this book on all mathematical references, analyzing them in detail. He attributes his success to his math teacher , who taught him for seven years in a row, inspiring a love for numbers.

Students are future leaders and thinkers; Teachers get to inspire and nurture these future leaders. Therefore, teaching is the foundation of the future, and success depends on it.

A teacher’s influence on the life of a child is invaluable. The student-teacher dynamics hold a critical place in guiding society.

Here are some quotes that confirm that teachers impact students’ futures:

  • “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.” – Malcolm X.
  • “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” – John Dewey.
  • “Education breeds confidence. Confidence breeds hope. Hope breeds peace.” – Confucius.
  • “The dream begins, most of the time, with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you on to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called truth.”– Dan Rather.
  • “Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.” – Margaret Mead
  • “I touch the future. I teach.”– Christa Mcauliffe.
  • “A teacher presents the past, reveals the present, and creates the future.” –Unknown.

Quotes About Teacher-Student Relationship

A strong teacher-student relationship isn’t just about being nice; it’s about creating an optimal environment for learning, growth, and student success.

A strong teacher-student relationship is essential to create a safe classroom where students feel comfortable taking risks and learning from mistakes.

When students feel connected to and supported by their teacher, they experience greater emotional well-being in the classroom. This lowers stress and anxiety, which are major obstacles to learning.

Students are less likely to act out or become disruptive when they have respect and a positive rapport with their teacher.

Learners who feel their teacher believes in them are more motivated, putting greater effort into their work. This translates into better academic performance and a love of learning.

Positive relationships with teachers have long-lasting benefits for students. They help develop greater self-confidence, resilience, and a willingness to seek help when needed throughout their lives.

Here are some quotes on the importance of positive student-teacher relationships:

  • “Students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” – John C. Maxwell
  • “Education is the key to success in life, and teachers make a lasting impact in the lives of their students.” – Solomon Ortiz.
  • “If kids come to us from strong, healthy, functioning families, it makes our job easier. Our job is more critical if they do not come to us from strong, healthy, functioning families.” – Barbara Colorose.
  • “When educating the minds of our youth, we must not forget to educate their hearts.”– Dalai Lama.
  • “They may forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel.”–Carl W. Buechner.

  • “Great teachers empathize with kids, respect them, and believe that each one has something special that can be built upon.” – Ann Lieberman.
  • “The secret in education lies in respecting the student.”– Ralph Waldo Emerson.
  • “Children are likely to live up to what you believe of them.” – Lady Bird Johnson.

Quotes About Teachers & Their Impact on Society

Teaching impacts society as a whole. Teachers guide pastoral nourishment to ensure the development of well-rounded, ethical, and caring citizens.

Teachers equip students with the skills to succeed in various careers. This creates a skilled workforce that drives economic growth and innovation.

They educate students about social issues, promote tolerance and understanding, and empower them to challenge injustices. This helps society move towards greater equality and overall progress.

They also develop an understanding of history and current events and a sense of civic responsibility,  encouraging students to become active in their communities.

Education has the power to break cycles of poverty and disadvantage. Teachers give students from all backgrounds opportunities to succeed, helping create a more equitable society.

Teachers are role models, inspirers, influencers, and touchstones in education from early years to adult education.

As a teacher, you are responsible for shaping future leaders by positively inspiring them to be responsible community members.

Shaping society is a cyclic affair; the generations you shape are the ones that go on to make a difference.

Teacher Appreciation Quotes

The Importance of education is widely acknowledged. However,  teachers rarely receive public recognition for their contributions. Though you put a lot of effort into ensuring that your students are set for success, much of those efforts go unnoticed.

The job often extends beyond classroom instruction, where you spend time grading papers, preparing lesson plans, and attending meetings outside of school hours.

You shape the lives of your students, imparting them with knowledge and encouraging them to fight, dream, and never give up.

Your relentless efforts prepare your students for success within and beyond academics. Your efforts yield a lot of appreciation from your students. Learners appreciate your support, kindness, dedication to their excellence, and ability to teach them.

Your acceptance of all learners and your ability to make them feel special is a value they dearly appreciate.

Here are some quotes that appreciate your selflessness and passion as an educator:

  • “Teachers can change lives with just the right mix of chalk and challenges.” – Joyce Meyer.
  • “The best teacher of children, in brief, is one who is essentially childlike.” – H. L. Mencken.
  • “What the teacher is, is more important than what he teaches.” – Karl Menninger.
  • “It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.”- Albert Einstein.

  • “Your heart is slightly bigger than the average human heart, but that’s because you’re a teacher.” – Aaron Bacall.
  • “The influence of a good teacher can never be erased.” – Unknown.

The Power of a Great Teacher

Great teachers play a huge role in shaping who we become. They inspire us to learn, grow, and reach our full potential. We all remember those special teachers who believed in us, even when we didn’t believe in ourselves.

Teachers, in a way, are the starting point for all other professions. They inspire scientists, doctors, artists, and countless others to follow their dreams. Some students are even inspired to become teachers, carrying on this tradition of developing young minds.

A great teacher sees potential in their students, even when it’s hidden. They encourage them to push themselves and achieve their goals. They use creative ways to make learning fun and engaging for everyone.

We are all grateful for the positive impact teachers have on our lives. However, being a great teacher takes dedication and effort, including getting the proper teacher certification .

Let your teachers know how much you appreciate their hard work and passion. Knowing they inspire future generations can be a powerful motivator for them to continue their amazing work.

“What greater or better gift can we offer the republic than to teach and instruct our youth?”-Cicero.

Social Media Bans Alone Won’t Improve Mental Health, Say Student Advocates

social media in education quotes

There is a significant perception gap between educators and students when it comes to the impact of social media on mental health. Educators are quick to blame platforms like TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat—or at least argue that they have exacerbated students’ mental health problems. But for students, the list of causes is much longer.

“We carry around a lot of emotional baggage. It’s invisible. As an athlete, I can tell you that there is a stigma around [having a] conversation about mental health [in my circle]. We need spaces to talk about mental health, just like our physical health,” said Anjali Verma, a student at the Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School University Scholars Program in Chester County, Pa.

Verma addressed her comments to a room full of school and district leaders at Education Week’s annual Leadership Symposium , held in Arlington, Va. on May 2.

Verma was joined by Ava Havidic , the president of the National Student Board Member Association and a student at the Millennium 6-12 Collegiate Academy in Tamarac, Fla. Havidic said the stigma around discussing mental health hides the full range of challenges students are dealing with daily.

“Students are part of the hustle culture, where rest isn’t prioritized and taking on more pressure is normalized,” Havidic said.

She and Verma both pointed out that students find it hard to excel at AP classes and coursework alongside family responsibilities or jobs.

When schools don’t give students the space to openly discuss their mental health challenges or aren’t transparent about the resources they have (or don’t have) to help students, young people are more likely to seek TikTok remedies .

“Students should know, from their school leaders, that they don’t have to struggle in silence,” said Verma.

Getting past the social media bugbear

Educators are concerned that apps like TikTok have the potential to contribute to poor mental health in students, but students and teachers disagree on the degree of impact.

In a nationally representative survey of 1,056 high school-age adolescents conducted in February and March, the EdWeek Research Center found that nearly three quarters said that social media either has no impact or a positive impact on their mental health and well-being. The participants pointed to several positive impacts of social media—they can find friends and learn about different cultures, and the platforms offer safe spaces that allow students of color and LGBTQ+ youth to connect with young people like them.

Havidic said social media is also a space where students can have open conversations about their mental health.

“We have to teach students how to use social media well … [and] budget their time. Instead of banning social media tools, there should be positive reinforcement when students use it well,” she said.

In fact, banning social media tools now could hurt students in the future, both student advocates said.

Students need the discipline to avoid social media when they get into higher education or jobs. Learning how to cope with its distractions and developing the ability to distinguish fake news from the truth are skills schools should focus on now so students are equipped to deal with it as adults.

Safe spaces and supportive adults

Schools can also create spaces, both physical and metaphorical, where the mental health conversation can happen without stigma.

Verma said she created a mental health club in her school. Within two weeks of starting, the club had over 50 members. Verma credits that to the fact that student clubs can potentially reach hard-to-reach students who might be more receptive to outreach from peers. She is also part of a national nonprofit that works specifically to remove the stigma among student-athlete communities in addressing mental health challenges.

“Only a third of our students [in our school] knew that we had a psychologist and social worker. Students were made aware of these resources and how to access them,” Verma said.

Such spaces can be created online, too, according to Havidic.

She’s been part of several online conversations that create awareness about mental health challenges, or, in small groups, have students discuss how they feel in school. The advantage with online spaces is that students can dial in from anywhere if they don’t have access to an in-person club or prefer the online option.

“It allows students to decompress,” Havidic said.

Supportive adults are another pillar for this work.

Havidic told the attendees of the EdWeek conference that they need to know who’s representing the students on the school board so that they know how to receive student feedback. Havidic’s school has also created a principal advisory council, which seeks feedback from students on what’s working and what isn’t.

“We had an online career tool that was difficult for all students to navigate. The student council suggested a different tool, which had more inclusive options for those who didn’t want to go to a traditional four-year college. It reduces the stress students have about their future,” Havidic said.

For some mental health challenges, though, students need medical or psychological help that goes well beyond the training and abilities of classroom teachers or student peer groups. That’s where counselors and school psychologists come in.

Schools have long faced a staffing crunch in those areas, with mental health professionals in the system overrun by both their caseload and administrative duties

An attentive classroom teacher can be a backstop here.

“Even if you’ve referred a student to the counselor, you may need to track if the student actually went back. You need to watch out for signs of distress,” Havidic said.

Opinion: Does social media rewire kids’ brains? Here’s what the science really says

America’s young people face a mental health crisis, and adults constantly debate how much to blame phones and social media. A new round of conversation has been spurred by Jonathan Haidt’s book “The Anxious Generation,” which contends that rising mental health issues in children and adolescents are the result of social media replacing key experiences during formative years of brain development.

The book has been criticized by academics , and rightfully so. Haidt’s argument is based largely on research showing that adolescent mental health has declined since 2010, coinciding roughly with mass adoption of the smartphone. But of course, correlation is not causation. The research we have to date suggests that the effects of phones and social media on adolescent mental health are probably much more nuanced.

Opinion: Troubled youth? Contrary to stereotypes, much of Gen Z is doing just fine

Perceptions of younger generations as broadly suffering from mental health problems are exaggerated and potentially harmful.

Feb. 16, 2024

That complex picture is less likely to get attention than Haidt’s claims because it doesn’t play as much into parental fears. After all, seeing kids absorbed in their phones, and hearing that their brains are being “rewired,” calls to mind an alien world-domination plot straight from a sci-fi film.

And that’s part of the problem with the “rewiring the brain” narrative of screen time. It reflects a larger trope in public discussion that wields brain science as a scare tactic without yielding much real insight.

First, let’s consider what the research has shown so far . Meta-analyses of the links between mental health and social media give inconclusive or relatively minor results. The largest U.S. study on childhood brain development to date did not find significant relationships between the development of brain function and digital media use . This month, an American Psychological Assn. health advisory reported that the current state of research shows “ using social media is not inherently beneficial or harmful to young people” and that its effects depend on “pre-existing strengths or vulnerabilities, and the contexts in which they grow up.”

Editorial: Social media companies refuse to safeguard kids. It’s up to lawmakers now

State and federal lawmakers are trying to create regulations to protect kids from potential harms from social media use. It’s not easy to find balance.

April 22, 2024

So why the insistence from Haidt and others that smartphones dangerously rewire the brain? It stems from misunderstandings of research that I have encountered frequently as a neuroscientist studying emotional development, behavioral addictions and people’s reactions to media.

Imaging studies in neuroscience typically compare some feature of the brain between two groups: one that does not do a specific behavior (or does it less frequently) and one that does the behavior more frequently. When we find a relationship, all it means is either that the behavior influences something about the functioning of this brain feature, or something about this feature influences whether we engage in the behavior.

In other words, an association between increased brain activity and using social media could mean that social media activates the identified pathways, or people who already have increased activity in those pathways tend to be drawn to social media, or both.

Fearmongering happens when the mere association between an activity such as social media use and a brain pathway is taken as a sign of something harmful on its own. Functional and structural research on the brain cannot give enough information to objectively identify increases or decreases in neural activity, or in a brain region’s thickness, as “good” or “bad.” There is no default healthy status quo that everybody’s brains are measured against, and doing nearly any activity involves many parts of the brain.

Opinion: The surprising way to help your brain remember

Testing, not rote memorization, is key to learning. But it works only under the right circumstances.

Feb. 19, 2024

“The Anxious Generation” neglects these subtleties when, for example, it discusses a brain system known as the default mode network. This system decreases in activity when we engage with spirituality, meditation and related endeavors, and Haidt uses this fact to claim that social media is “not healthy for any of us” because studies suggest that it by contrast increases activity in the same network.

But the default mode network is just a set of brain regions that tend to be involved in internally focused thinking, such as contemplating your past or making a moral judgment, versus externally focused thinking such as playing chess or driving an unfamiliar route. Its increased activity does not automatically mean something unhealthy.

This type of brain-related scare tactic is not new. A common version, which is also deployed for smartphones , involves pathways in the brain linked to drug addiction, including areas that respond to dopamine and opioids. The trope says that any activity associated with such pathways is addictive, like drugs, whether it’s Oreos , cheese , God , credit card purchases , sun tanning or looking at a pretty face . These things do involve neural pathways related to motivated behavior — but that does not mean they damage our brains or should be equated with drugs.

Adolescence is a time when the brain is particularly plastic, or prone to change. But change doesn’t have to be bad. We should take advantage of plasticity to help teach kids healthy ways to self-manage their own use of, and feelings surrounding, smartphones.

Do I expect future findings on the adolescent brain to immediately quell parents’ fears on this issue? Of course not — and the point is that they shouldn’t. Brain imaging data is a fascinating way to explore interactions between psychology, neuroscience and social factors. It’s just not a tool for declaring behaviors to be pathological. Feel free to question whether social media is good for kids — but don’t misuse neuroscience to do so.

New UNESCO report warns social media affects girls’ well-being, learning and career choices

 PR GEM Gender

Children’s social lives are increasingly playing out on social media. But all too often, algorithm-driven platforms amplify exposure to negative gender norms. Ethical considerations must be taken into account in the design of these platforms. Social media should not confine women and girls to roles that limit their educational and career aspirations.

UNESCO Director-General

Social media negatively affects well-being and reinforces gender stereotypes

Entitled  Technology on Her Terms , the report warns that algorithm-driven, image-based content, especially on social media, can expose girls to material ranging from sexual content to videos that glorify unhealthy behaviours or unrealistic body standards. This exposure can have particularly detrimental effects on girls’ self-esteem and body image. In turn, this impacts girls’ mental health and well-being, which are essential for academic success.

The UNESCO report cites Facebook’s own research, which found that 32% of teenage girls said that, when they felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse. It also underlines the addictive design of TikTok, characterized by short, engaging videos. This instant-gratification model may affect attention spans and learning habits, making sustained concentration on educational and extracurricular tasks more challenging.

Girls also suffer more cyberbullying than boys. On average, across OECD countries with available data, 12% of 15-year-old girls reported having been cyberbullied, compared to 8% of boys. This situation is compounded by the rise of image-based sexual content, AI-generated deepfakes and ‘self-generated’ sexual imagery circulating on-line and in classrooms. Female students in several countries interviewed for the report said that they were exposed to pictures or videos they did not want to see.

The results demonstrate the importance of greater investment in education – including media and information literacy – and smarter regulation of digital platforms, in line with  UNESCO’s Guidelines for the Governance of Digital Platforms , launched in November last year.

Negative gender stereotypes dampen girls’ STEM aspirations

All these factors create a feedback loop: in which girls are exposed to negative gender norms that are amplified by social media, are steered away from studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects that are considered male-oriented fields, and are deprived of the opportunity to shape the very tools that expose them to these stereotypes.

According to UNESCO data, women make up only 35% of tertiary STEM graduates around the world, a figure that has not changed in the past 10 years. The report shows that persistent biases deter women from pursuing STEM careers – ultimately resulting in a lack of women in the technology workforce.

Women hold less than 25% of science, engineering, information and communication technologies jobs. They constitute only 26% of employees in data and artificial intelligence, 15% in engineering, and 12% in cloud computing across the world's leading economies. Only 17% of patent applications are filed by women globally.

Evidence shows that the digital transformation is being led by men. Although 68% of countries have policies in place to support STEM education, only half of these policies specifically support girls and women. Policy efforts should seek to promote role models, including on social media, to encourage career choices in STEM among young women. Improving girls’ access to STEM studies is key to ensuring that women participate on equal terms in the digital transformation of our societies, and supporting the design of truly inclusive technologies.

NORTH YORK — Ontario is introducing the most comprehensive plan in Canada to reduce distractions in classrooms and improve the health of children by standardizing and strengthening provincewide measures and mandatory learning to directly counter the alarming rise of vaping and cellphone distractions within classrooms.

As students benefit from three more years of uninterrupted learning as a result of the government’s historic signing of deals with all teachers’ unions, the government is taking further action to go back-to-basics by combating the negative impact mobile devices, social media and vaping are having on in-class learning.

“We have heard loud and clear from parents and teachers alike that cellphones in classrooms are distracting kids from learning,” said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education. “Our government is introducing the toughest policy in Canada to tackle this issue by cracking down on cellphone usage during class time, as well as banning vaping in all schools. When it comes to cellphones, our policy is ‘out of sight and out of mind,’ as we get students back to the basics by restoring focus, safety and common sense back in Ontario schools.”

Students in kindergarten to Grade 6 will be required to keep phones on silent and out of sight for the entire school day, unless explicitly permitted by an educator. For students in Grades 7 to 12, cellphones will not be permitted during class time unless explicitly directed by the educator. Moreover, social media websites will be removed from all school networks and devices, and report cards will include comment on students’ distraction levels in class. The government will provide mandatory training for teachers and new supports for students and parents.

The government is also strengthening the rules around students caught using or carrying vapes or cigarettes. Students will be required to surrender these products, along with parents being notified immediately of the situation. The government also officially announced $30 million in the 2024 Budget to install vape detectors and other security upgrades in schools.

To support these initiatives, the government is investing $17.5 million in new wrap-around supports for student mental health and parent engagement. This will include:

  • $15 million to provide supports for students at risk of addictive behaviours
  • $1 million to partner with School Mental Health Ontario to develop webinars and resources targeted to parents and students across the province to learn how to talk about the adverse effects of vaping and excessive cellphone usage
  • $1.5 million to Parent Involvement Committees and students to run local prevention campaigns to help deter vaping and cellphone distractions

These changes and investments are part of the government’s plan to get students back to basics. By removing distractions in the classroom, students can focus on learning the skills they need to succeed after graduation.

  • A 2023 UNESCO report found a negative link between excessive cellphone use and student academic performance and that students can take up to 20 minutes to refocus on what they were learning after focusing on a distraction.
  • A CAMH study on youth, smartphones and social media use showed that over a third (35%) of Ontario’s secondary school students spend five hours or more daily on electronic devices (smartphones, tablets, laptops, computers, gaming consoles) in their free time.
  • A 2022 Statistics Canada report found that vaping is more prevalent among younger rather than older Canadians, with more than one-fifth of adolescents aged 15 to 17 years reporting vaping in the previous 30 days.
  • Ontario is the first province in Canada to have a provincewide social media ban on school networks and devices, and the new cellphone restrictions go further than any other jurisdiction in Canada.
  • As part of an ongoing commitment to student mental health and well-being, for 2024-25, funding to support student mental health, including initiatives focused on student safety and physical activity, has reached $135.15 million, an increase of $117.76 million since 2017-18.
  • Investing $30 million over three years (2024-25 to 2026-27) to help equip schools with security cameras, lighting and other security upgrades, including vape detectors
  • Strengthening existing mandatory learning on cannabis and vaping and digital citizenship, with emphasis on the elementary curriculum
  • Ontario Native Education Counselling Association for culturally relevant cannabis and vaping awareness and prevention initiatives for youth
  • Canadian Lung Association for the “Lungs are for Life” program to raise awareness about tobacco, vaping and nicotine addiction
  • Springboard for its “Weed Out the Risk” program to raise awareness among youth and young adults about the risks of driving or being in a vehicle with a driver who is under the influence of cannabis
  • Lung Health Foundation to deliver the “Quash” program, which includes digital resources and a mobile app for students who are smoking and/or vaping
"Our government is taking action to protect children and youth from the harmful risks of vaping and build healthier communities across the province. We are building on the changes we have already made to restrict the sale of flavoured vapour products by taking this next step to make students surrender vape, tobacco and nicotine products in student possession to ensure our children receive their education in a safe and healthy learning environment." - Sylvia Jones Deputy Premier and Minister of Health
"Ontario is seeing a growing number of youth in Grades 7 through 12 report using vaping products that contain and emit many toxic substances. These products can affect the respiratory, immune and cardiovascular systems, and nicotine in these products is particularly harmful to youth brain development. Removing vaping products from Ontario schools will help protect our students from these preventable threats." - Dr. Kieran Moore Chief Medical Officer of Health
"We have seen an increasing number of adolescents and teens who are using vaping devices, which can lead to both short-term and long-term health problems. Nicotine can also quickly become a long-term addiction, especially while students’ brains are still developing. We are pleased to see the Ministry of Education acknowledging the increasing use of vaping devices among Ontario’s students." - Ronald Cohn President & CEO, SickKids
"At CHEO, we increasingly see the mental health impacts of excessive exposure to social media among children and youth. We also know that clever marketing has made e-cigarettes seem fun and harmless – even though they’re not and even though they often lead youth to tobacco smoking. It is important to educate kids and families about these risks and to make sure schools are places that protect and promote students’ health." - Alex Munter President and CEO, Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO)
"At a time when young people are facing so many distractions, mental health pressures and even potential dangers, such as addictions, cyberbullying and online predators, we are taking measures to protect students by cracking down on vaping and other addictive substances, removing social media from school networks and devices, and increasing student mental health supports. Students deserve positive and distraction-free schools that promote positive mental health and allow for uninterrupted learning." - Natalie Pierre Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Education and MPP for Burlington
"Schools need to eliminate classroom distractions and focus on academic achievement by prioritizing STEM learning and real-life skills, such as financial literacy, and ensuring young people are proficient in reading, writing and math. Our government is listening to the concerns of parents, and we’re taking action by making it clear that vaping has no place in our schools, mobile devices need to be put away, and swearing at teachers is unacceptable behaviour." - Billy Pang Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Education and MPP for Markham—Unionville
"Having recently championed a successful private motion to address the rising concerns of distractions in our schools, particularly stemming from cellphones and the growing prevalence of vaping among youth, I am pleased to see this swift and decisive action taken by the government. This announcement underscores our commitment to creating safe and focused learning environments for Ontario students. By enhancing policies to counter the negative impacts of excessive screen time and substance use, we are not only addressing the concerns of parents and educators, but also prioritizing the well-being and academic success of our youth. These revisions to the Provincial Code of Conduct and School Board Codes of Conduct demonstrate our dedication to meeting the evolving needs of our education system and ensuring that our school environments remain conducive to learning and growth." - Jess Dixon MPP for Kitchener South—Hespeler
