Highway To Heaven was Michael Landon’s last series; for four years, he and Victor French rode around the country giving heavenly assistance to those in need. Now the popular series is being revived as a series of Lifetime movies. This time, Jill Scott plays Angela, an angel of a different sort than Landon’s Johnathan Smith. Read on for more.

HIGHWAY TO HEAVEN : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: Angela Stewart (Jill Scott) walks into a middle school in Boulder, Colorado, looking to fill a temporary opening for a guidance counselor. The principal, Bruce Brooks (Barry Watson) loves her credentials, but wonders why she’s applying for a temporary spot. But he hires her, and right away she’s put into service to help Cody Grier (Ben Daon), a bright 8th-grader who has been doing nothing but getting himself in trouble since his mother died the year before.

We already know that Angela has help from “the boss,” who does things like help flowers bloom when she looks at them. So she tries to get Cody to open up about how his mother’s death has affected him. She gives him a ride home in order to introduce herself to his dad Jeff (Robert Moloney). He’s a chef who was going to open a restaurant with Cody’s mother Melissa (Ashley Ross), and never revisited those plans after she died. He has put all signs of Melissa in a utility room closet, thinking that’s the best for Cody.

Through several of Angela’s actions, she discovers that Cody wants to see these things, and in the process of getting the closet open, a bunch of old holiday presents spill out. One of the latest ones has the return address of a math tutoring website. He is failing math, so she signs him up. There, he is taught by a 12-year-old prodigy named Kaia (Sasha Rojen).

As she probes Cody and Jeff to find out more about why the two of them have both shut down in their own ways, she arranges Kaia and Cody to meet in person and create a robot for a school robotics tournament. It’s there that Cody sees the same photo of his mother that he saw in the utility room closet.

This is when he finds out for the first time that Kaia is his cousin and that Kaia’s mom, Vanessa (Victoria Bidewell), used to be close to his mom until her initial cancer diagnosis when he was a baby. After Vanessa panicked and abandoned Melissa, Jeff cut off contact.

In the meantime, Angela and Barry are quickly becoming buddies. After a fun day at the “batting field,” as she calls it, they go back to her apartment (just for him to use the bathroom), and he sees that there is no luggage or anything else; this is after he couldn’t find her on the alumni list of the college where she said she went.

This is when she admits to Barry that she’s an angel, sent not only to help out Cody but also Barry. Of course, Barry doesn’t believe her, and looks to fire her after he witnesses her using Cody’s school email to invite his aunt and cousin to the tournament. Will he come around, and will Angela be able to bring Cody’s family back together?

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: While this is a remake of Michael Landon’s  Highway To Heaven , which ran from 1984-89, this new version of the series feels a little more like  Touched By An Angel , for reasons we’ll explain below.

Performance Worth Watching: Jill Scott is incredibly charming as the perpetually positive Angela. She doesn’t make the role too saccharine, and gives her angelic character a lot of heart and just the right amount of wiseacre attitude to make her as human as any of the human characters in the movie.

Memorable Dialogue: We kept fixating on the “1996 BASEBALL” pennant behind Barry’s desk. We know he was on the baseball team of his college, and almost went pro. But that pennant is so generic, we wonder why they didn’t cheer “YAY SPORTS!” at some point during the movie.

Sex and Skin: None. The movie is rated TV-G, and is definitely OK for kids 7 and up.

Our Take: This new Highway To Heaven series, written by Angelica Chéri and Cathryn Humphris — Landon’s estate produces it along with Scott and Howard Braunstein — is intended to be the first of a series of movies on Lifetime. It’s pretty obviously an introduction to Angela, Barry, and how the two came to work together to give people around the country some heavenly assistance in their troubled lives.

The 90-minute film (without commercials) establishes this origin story well, but for the most part, the story’s throwback feel made us just want to watch the reruns of Landon’s version again. It’s such a lightweight story, despite the fact that it involves a dead mother, a disaffected teenager, and an estranged sister, that without the charm of Scott and her chemistry with Watson tying it down, it would float out of our memories almost instantly.

One thing we have to get out of the way before we go on: This version of  Highway To Heaven comes dangerously close to perpetuating the trope where a “magical” Black person comes and gives wise counsel and assistance to a largely white cast. Most of the time, it’s a supporting player. But here, it’s the star. Scott’s aura and energy overcome this trope, and we hope subsequent films have more diverse casts, but the unfortunate choice to make the rest of the cast mostly white may invite some backlash.

And another thing: Where is some of this “magic” that Angela is using, where she can send emails, make flowers bloom or close and lock doors without touching them? Is this the same as “The Stuff” that Landon’s angelic character had at his disposal? It feels like Angela has more direct “powers” than Johnathan Smith did, which makes the show feel more mystical, akin to  Touched By An Angel than the more down-to-earth Landon series.

But all that being said, if Scott and Watson can display the same chemistry that they did in this first movie, the new  Highway To Heaven will still be very watchable, despite what’s likely to be a wide quality swing for each story.

Our Call: STREAM IT. The new  Highway To Heaven isn’t highbrow by any means, but it’s good family entertainment, with a really winning lead performance by Jill Scott.

A reboot of the classic 1980s TV series of the same name, 2021's well-cast Highway to Heaven is a Lifetime Original movie about Angela, an angel who comes to Earth to help people. Angela takes a job as a guidance counselor at a junior high school, but her guidance goes beyond the job description, as she seeks to help a distressed teen who has been causing trouble at school and drifting apart from his father ever since the loss of his mother. Angela is aided in her quest by the school’s principal, Bruce, but her unexplained angelic presence also invites suspicion.

The original Highway to Heaven series was created in 1984 by Michael Landon, who also played the angel. The show saw Landon’s angel John Smith travel across the country with retired police officer Mark Gordon (Victor French), assuming different jobs and helping troubled souls overcome their problems. The Highway to Heaven remake, which is co-written by Landon’s son, Christopher Landon, is intended as the first installment in a series of Lifetime Movies, all centered on Angela as she makes use of her angelic powers to help those in need.

'Highway to Heaven' Review: Feel good watch that sparks hope

Spoilers for 'Highway to Heaven'

A miracle is defined as an extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs. Well, that's exactly what Angela Stewart, a full-time angel does as she intervenes when someone needs help badly in Lifetime 's new watch ' Highway to Heaven ' where she helps a grieving Cody deal with the passing of his mother.

The Lifetime flick is part of a special movie series event that is inspired by Michael Landon’s iconic 80s television series Highway to Heaven and looks to be exactly what is needed to get us warm as the weather gets colder. Read on to know our thoughts on 'Highway to Heaven '.

'List Of A Lifetime': Release date, spoilers, plot and all about Lifetime drama

A Crafty Christmas Romance': Release date, plot, cast and all you need to know about Lifetime's holiday movie

'Highway to Heaven' begins as we see Angela Stewart (Jill Scott) narrate that miracles are never ordinary and that they happen as her boss sees fit. She goes on to tell us that she is an angel who comes to those who need help. Angela is at a high school for the job of a temporary guidance counselor and her target, Cody (Ben Daon). The boy in 8th grade lost his mother over a year ago and hasn't been the same since with him acting out and causing problems in school. We also meet  Barry Watson as Principal Bruce Banks who loves Angela's credentials and hires her immediately. What follows is a journey of healing as Angela gets to the bottom of Cody's feelings, his family's, and even Principal Bruce's as she goes about her job of providing help where help is needed.

highway to heaven movie review

'Highway to Heaven' has minimal actors as the leads which allow each one of them to make their characters shine. Jill Scott as Angela is the perfect choice for an angel as she goes about her day dealing with various situations with a smile that makes you feel that everything will be alright. Her way of speaking itself is very comforting as she goes about being more than just a guidance counselor. Almost a family therapist, we liked watching her piece a broken family back again. Barry Watson, too, is extremely likable as the friendly principal who thinks the counselor he hired is nuts when Angela reveals her true nature as an angel. Ben Daon gives a good performance as well as a kid who lost his mother and whose father is having a hard time too. As Angela gradually gets each one to open up and solves problems with her special powers we wished we had someone like that too in our life to come along and help us out.

highway to heaven movie review

Feelings are fragile and important is what is showcased in the movie. The line 'try to be the light in someone's darkness' was meaningful as we can try and apply it in our lives as well, angel or not. ' Highway to Heaven' with its sweet story and great cast warmed our hearts. A feel-good watch we suggest huddling in with your family for a bonding session or just watching it to make yourself a bit happier if you're going through a hard time.

You can watch 'Highway to Heaven' on the Lifetime channel.

In cooperation with Cindy Landon and the Michael Landon Estate, the movies are inspired by the highly-rated ’80s drama that ran for five seasons and more than 100 episodes from 1984 to 1989 on NBC. With a constant theme throughout of love and kindness, the reboot aims to inspire hope and community as it addresses contemporary social and emotional issues, this time with a female angel as the anchor of the movie series.

In the premiere movie, Angela (Scott) assumes the role of a temporary school counselor and finds herself working alongside the principal Bruce (Watson) as she intervenes in the lives of a troubled student Cody (Daon) and his father Jeff (Moloney) after the tragic loss of Cody’s mother, Melissa (Ross). As Angela seemingly works miracles with Cody and Jeff, Bruce is in disbelief when he learns of the divine nature of Angela’s work.

The project marks a reunion for Lifetime and Scott, who previously starred in the Emmy-nominated Flint centered on the water crisis, the all-African American reboot of Steel Magnolias and Sins of the Mother. Watson also returns to Lifetime for his first non-holiday movie role for the network, having previously starred in A Very Nutty Christmas and The Santa Con.

“The original Highway to Heaven was appointment viewing for millions and in a time when we need those messages of hope the most, we are excited to bring back the iconic series in a new way, said Tanya Lopez, EVP, Scripted Programming, Lifetime & LMN. “Having worked with Jill previously for some of Lifetime’s most celebrated movies, we know she is the perfect actor to bring her passion and brilliance to this role. I just love her…Jill amplifies everything she touches in ways that make her pop off the screen. And the addition of Barry was just icing on the cake. I believe we have assembled a dynamic new duo with both Jill and Barry at the helm.”

The first installment of the Highway to Heaven series is produced by Rain Productions and Propagate for Lifetime. Jonathan Baruch and Rob Wolken executive produce for Rain Productions; Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens, Gregory Lipstone, and Rodney Ferrell executive produce from Propagate; Howard Braunstein is executive producer; Jill Scott and Shawn Gee also executive produce. Stacey K. Black directs from an original script by executive producer/writer Cathryn Humphris and award-winning playwright Angelica Cheri. Cindy Landon and Wayne Lepoff are Executive Producing on behalf of Michael Landon’s estate.

Scott currently plays Hazel in BET+’s The First Wives Club, and is the host of J.ill the Podcast. Her July 2000 debut album, “Who is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds, Vol. 1,” went double platinum and earned Scott several Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist. Later she went on to have the #1 album in the country with “The Light of The Sun” and performed at The White House. Scott penned The Moments, The Minutes, The Hours, a compilation of poems that instantly became a New York Times bestseller. She also is the founder of Blues Babe, a registered 501(c)3 foundation that supports minority students pursuing college degrees. Scott is repped by UTA and Maverick.

Watson soon will be seen starring in the CW superhero drama Naomi , based on the DC Comic. He most recently appeared opposite Russell Crowe in Showtime’s limited series The Loudest Voice , chronicling the rise and fall of former Fox News Chairman, Roger Ailes. He also was the lead of the Hulu/Blumhouse Production film The Current Occupant and in Sony’s A Dog’s Way Home . Watson’s breakout role was on 7th Heave n, starring as Matt Camden for six seasons. Watson is repped by Innovative Artists and Trademark Talent.

Cheri is repped by APA and Rain Group Management.

Where Was Lifetime’s Highway to Heaven Filmed? Is it a True Story?

of Where Was Lifetime’s Highway to Heaven Filmed? Is it a True Story?

‘Highway to Heaven’ is a drama movie by Lifetime that recounts the touching tale of tragedy, loss, and miracles. The film centers upon Cody, a high schooler who is going through a life-changing phase of grief following the untimely death of his mother, Melissa. His father, Jeff, and aunt Vanessa are also trying to come to terms with the tragedy but are having a hard time dealing with their loss. In an unexpected turn of events, the junior high school principal Bruce Banks hires a temporary school counselor named Angela to help Cody and his family. But what they do not know is that she is a real angel.

With modern-day suburbs serving as the backdrop of the heartwarming story, the film accurately captures the emotional and psychological impact of losing a loved one. If you are moved by some of the impassioned scenes and wish to learn more about the film’s production, origins, and cast details, you have come to the right place. Here’s everything you need to know!

Highway to Heaven Filming Locations

‘Highway to Heaven’ was shot entirely in Tennessee, the landlocked state located in the southern part of the United States. The principal photography was primarily carried out in Nashville, the somewhat centrally located capital of the Volunteer State. Curious to learn more about the specific details of where the movie was shot? Allow us to be your guide!

Nashville, Tennessee

Scenes involving Cody’s house and school were all filmed in Nashville. Home to Vanderbilt University, it is one of the most populous cities in Tennessee and is also the county seat of Davidson County. Nashville is no stranger to film production, and over the years, it has attracted numerous filmmakers to the region.

highway to heaven movie review

Unsurprisingly, Nashville has served as the filming location for productions such as ‘The Thing Called Love,’ ‘ The Green Mile ,’ ‘Country Strong,’ ‘ The Matrix ,’ and ‘Gummo.’ The city also hosts the Nashville Film Festival, one of the largest events of its kind in the Southern United States. The weeklong affair showcases independent films from around the world.

Highway to Heaven Cast

Jill Scott headlines the drama film by essaying the role of Angela Stewart. She is a three-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter whose acting credits include ‘ First Wives Club ‘ and ‘ Black Lightning .’ Ben Daon appears as Cody, the troubled high schooler struggling to come to terms with his mother’s death. The actor is known for his performances in ‘The Astronauts’ and ‘ The Mysterious Benedict Society .’

Victoria Bidewell portrays Cody’s aunt Vanessa. You may recall watching the Canadian actress in television movies like ‘Kiss at Pine Lake’ or ‘The Unauthorized Full House Story.’ Barry Watson plays the role of the junior high school principal Bruce Banks, while Robert Moloney essays the role of Cody’s father, Jeff. Other noteworthy cast members in the film are Yoshié Bancroft, Chris Wood, and Ashley Ross, who feature as Gloria, Luke, and Melissa, respectively.

Is Highway to Heaven Based on a True Story?

No, ‘Highway to Heaven’ is not based on a true story. The Stacey K. Black directorial is a reboot of the popular 80s fantasy drama series of the same name created by Michael Landon. The film touches upon deeply religious concepts like angels and miracles. Speaking about his beliefs, Barry Watson said in an interview that he managed to get through some of the most testing times in his life because of souls (angels) who are constantly looking after him.

highway to heaven movie review

Similarly, Jill Scott also confessed that she believes in angels. She considers people who have somehow saved her from several tragic incidents were all angels to her. While everyone may not have a similar religious and philosophical framework as Jill and Barry, we all have people in our lives who stand by us when we need them the most. In a way, the Lifetime film is a story of such people.

highway to heaven movie review

However, it is noteworthy that the fantastical concepts used to tell the heartwarming story may or may not be true for people based on their religious outlook. Since the filmmakers have not claimed that the specifics of the premise are inspired by an actual incident, we can assume that ‘Highway to Heaven’ is not a true story.

Occasional social drinking and smoking isn't always limited to the 18- and 21-and-over crowd, but when it's central to the plot, there's often an obvious negative outcome.

Mild curse words include "hell." Racial slurs are used when they relate to the plot. One episode about the dangers of racism had characters using terms like "jungle bunnies," "Sambo," "black piece of trash," and the n-word.

Violence & Scariness

Fist fights are common, and some characters carry and use weapons. One scene shows a police officer shoot and kill an unarmed teen. The violence is very realistic, and the physical effects are obvious.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

When an episode's plot includes romantic interest between adults, there are a few kissing scenes -- but no nudity.

Positive Messages

The show tackles heavy emotional issues like unplanned pregnancy, death, and personal regret and always includes a strong moral message. The main characters (one's human, the other's an angel) travel the country to help people in distress.

Parents need to know that the main characters in this drama are an angel (who looks human) and his human companion, who travel the country on orders from God to change people's lives for the better. The show's ever-changing content is often emotionally charged, with plots centering on issues like coping with a loved one's death, facing the uncertainty of aging, and dealing with broken relationships. When the subject matter calls for it, language and violence can be very strong (in one episode, racial slurs include the n-word and multiple substitutes, and a teen is shot by a police officer), but the iffy stuff is integral to the show's positive moral messages. This is an excellent choice for parents to share with older tweens and teens, as it brings up lots of great discussion topics.

Based on 3 parent reviews

Most episodes are good.

My primary school kids were hooked, what's the story.

In HIGHWAY TO HEAVEN, an angel in human form and his very human companion follow orders from a higher power to help guide people through stressful times in their lives. Angelic Jonathan Smith ( Michael Landon ) and his friend, ex-cop Mark Gordon (Victor French), travel the country on assignment from God -- whom they call "The Boss." In each episode, they wander into the lives of men and women who need some help coping with grief, anger, or guilt. Jonathan and Mark establish relationships with their subjects (who never suspect that the duo are anything but drifters), gain their trust, and lend a hand (and a shoulder) when it's needed. Along the way, Jonathan offers some subtly divine intervention through lots of moralistic straight-talk that changes the lives of those he meets. Once they've completed their task, he and Mark head down the highway again, on their way to a new assignment.

Is It Any Good?

Despite its title, Highway to Heaven 's focus is on addressing moral issues rather than religious ones, so it appeals to a broad audience. References to God are uncommon (as mentioned, he's almost always called "The Boss"), and when Jonathan speaks in prayer, he rarely addresses anyone in particular, more often seeming like he's talking to the wind. The show tackles serious topics like family distress, unplanned pregnancy, the death of a loved one, and murder. Storylines are often emotionally charged, and depending on an episode's subject matter, both language and violence can escalate. For example, an episode that addressed racial bigotry and law enforcement's racial profiling included multiple degrading terms (like the n-word) and culminated in the shooting death of an African-American teen. While disturbing, the content was integral to the seriousness of the plot and the impact of the message.

Given the varying content of each installment, parents may want to at least scan episode descriptions before allowing younger kids to watch. But the show's overwhelmingly positive lessons are inescapable, and parents who watch with older tweens and teens will probably find themselves having interesting discussions about the many issues each episode raises.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about the many questions inspired by each episode's topic. How would you respond if you were faced with the characters' challenges? How do kids react to difficult situations? From where and whom do they draw their strength? Families can also discuss their own spiritual beliefs. How can faith help in times of stress? Do you believe there are angels among us? What other ways have religion and faith been portrayed on TV? How do the media treat religion and faith in general?

Highway To Heaven Reboot - What We Know So Far

Jill Scott Highway to Heaven

"Highway to Heaven" was a sentimental favorite among drama watchers of the 1980s, who enjoyed the show for five seasons when it aired on NBC from 1984 to 1989. The series stars Michael Landon as Jonathan Smith, an angel on probation sent to earth to shepherd lost souls in the hopes of finally earning his wings, and Victor French as Mark Gordon, an ex-cop who is the only person savvy as to Smith's true nature (and his past as a human named Arthur Thompson). Traveling the roads of America together, the twosome follow assignments from "The Boss" (a.k.a. God) and try to better the lives of others. Every good deed gets Jonathan closer to a spot in Heaven, which eventually begins to worry Mark, who doesn't want to lose his best friend.

Times have changed, but some premises are forever. Lifetime is bringing us a reboot of this heavenly story, according to Deadline , in the form of a series of dramatic films. These films will star some familiar faces who will surely put a new spin on the show's themes. What is the "Highway to Heaven" reboot about? Who will star in it? When will it hit the air waves? Read on to find out.

When will the Highway to Heaven reboot be released?

Barry Watson sporting stubble

"Highway to Heaven" will be airing on Lifetime as a series of films. There's no word as to when the first of these movies will air, and a start date for filming isn't mentioned in the press release announcing the movie series' pick-up. If the film goes into production by the late summer and we factor in time for effects work and post-production, it's possible that fans might see the first movie land in the winter of 2022, or perhaps the 2021 Christmas season.

According to The Hollywood Reporter , A&E previously tried to bring a reboot of the series to life in 2014, in the form of an edgy contemporary drama. This attempt was co-produced by Mark Wahlberg and written by John Wirth, who served as showrunner on the biker drama "Hell on Wheels." This attempt at recreating the show died on the vine without making it to series.

Who stars in the Highway to Heaven reboot?

Jill Scott wearing houndstooth blazer

As you might be able to tell from the above images, this version of "Highway to Heaven" will be making some changes to the characters as fans know them. Our angel in this adaption will fittingly be named Angela, and will be played by Grammy-winning singer and actress Jill Scott, who will also serve as one of the show's executive producers. Portraying her new friend Bruce will be Barry Watson. Bruce is a school principal who soon learns Angela's true identity.

Rounding out the cast will be Ben Daon, who will portray the troubled Cody, Robert Moloney, who will play Cody's father, Jeff, and Ashley Ross, who will play Cody's late mother and Jeff's late wife, Melissa . These are all roles slated for the first movie in the series — there is no indication thus far that Moloney, Daon, or Ross will continue on with the series as it moves along to further installments. No roles have been cast for the other movies in the series at press time.

The series is fully approved by the Michael Landon Estate. Cindy Landon, Michael's widow, will act as an executive producer on the show.

What will the Highway to Heaven reboot be about?

Barry Watson on red carpet

According to the description released by Deadline, in the first movie, newly-made angel Angela (Scott) takes up a temporary post as a school counselor. She and Bruce, the school's principal, work together to help the troubled Cody, who is dealing just as poorly with the loss of his mother, Melissa, as his father Jeff is. Angela sets to work righting things between Cody and Jeff while Bruce is left to gape at the divine nature of Angela's literal miracle-working.

This leaves a lot of storytelling room for future movies in Lifetime's "Highway to Heaven" reboot series. Will Bruce act as the eternal skeptic to Angela's serene, mission-driven divinity? Will he accept the nature of her powers by the end of the first film, and thus make himself a full partner on her quest? We'll have to tune in to Lifetime to find out.

Did you know

  • Trivia NBC wanted a handsome young actor to play Mark Gordon, but Michael Landon had a long history of refusing to work with better-looking actors. He was even behind Guy Williams 's dismissal from Bonanza (1959) , feeling threatened by the newcomer's good looks and charisma. Landon insisted that he would only star in the series if his friend and Little House on the Prairie (1974) co-star Victor French was cast. The character of Mark Gordon was rewritten to suit the middle-aged Victor French.
  • Goofs Despite Mark Gordon often telling people that he and Michael have been traveling "all across the country", the duo rarely leaves southern California as indicated by the climate, scenery, and the cities they visit.

Mark Gordon : Cute, Jonathan. Real cute.

  • Alternate versions Most of the original episodes, which aired on prime time television, normally contained between five to seven minutes of additional scenes and dialogue which has since been lost. This material was not included in any of the syndicated copies of the show, which today are the only versions available.
