Integrated MS-PhD Programs

Duration: These programs typically take around 4 to 5 years to complete and are designed for students who wish to pursue a continuous study leading from a master’s degree to a PhD.

Accelerated Programs

In some cases, outstanding students might have options to complete their PhD in a shorter timeframe, particularly if they have already completed significant research or have a master's degree in a closely related field.

South Korea has the 14th largest economy in the world, with plenty of opportunities for international students. The main industries include electronics, manufacturing, shipbuilding, publishing, finance and more. South Korea is in particular need of English language speakers and IT and technology specialists. Could this be the best next step for you and your future? Find out here.

What’s the job market like?

There’s very low unemployment in South Korea currently and its economy has been growing steadily, making it a great time to get a job in the country. The Korean government is also keen on students from overseas securing jobs there. However, roles in certain fields are easier to come by than others so it’s important to do your research before committing to settling there to find a job.

The job market can be competitive as you'll be up against Korean nationals, but as long as you have a relevant degree from a Korean institution and a good command of the language, you may find your international background can serve as an advantage.

Can I work in South Korea once I graduate?

You’re only eligible to work full-time in South Korea after graduating if you seek a visa for professors, have a bachelor’s degree in natural sciences and engineering or a master’s degree in a humanities subject from a Korean university.

If none of the above experiences apply to you then you might find it tricky to secure a work placement and we recommend speaking to the international office at your university to discuss this further. Also, while it’s not always essential, learning Korean or understanding the basics of the language will be hugely beneficial when interacting with your colleagues.

In most cases, to be eligible to work in the country you need to change your visa status from D-2 to D-10. To change your visa status, you will need to visit your nearest immigration office at the Ministry of Justice in South Korea. You will need to provide the following documents when applying:

PhD Degrees in South Korea

The institutions of higher education included regular four-year colleges and universities. Education is taken very seriously in South Korea, and the country is home to several world class universities, many of which have exchange agreements with various foreign universities, and are a good way for foreigners to experience life in the country.

Requirements for the PhD program often involve the student having already obtained a Master’s degree. Additionally, a thesis or dissertation primarily consisting of original academic research must be submitted. In some countries, this work may even need to be defended in front of a panel.

She Slept With a Violin on Her Pillow. Her Dreams Came True in Italy.

As a teenager in South Korea, Ayoung An decided to become a violin maker. Her journey eventually took her to Cremona, Italy, a famed hub for masters like Antonio Stradivari.

  • April 4, 2024

Art of Craft is a series about craftspeople whose work rises to the level of art.

When Ayoung An was 8, her parents bought her a violin. She slept with the instrument on the pillow next to her every night.

Two years later, a shop selling musical instruments opened in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, her hometown, and An became a fixture there, pelting the owner with questions. “I think I bothered him a lot,” An, now 32, said.

As a teenager, she decided she would become a violin maker. Eventually, a journey with twists and turns took her to Cremona in northern Italy — a famed hub for violin makers , including masters like Antonio Stradivari , since the 16th century. There, An, a rising star in the violin-making world with international awards under her belt, runs her own workshop .

The violin maker, Ayoung An, her hair drawn in a pony tail. wears a long gray-beige apron as she smiles for a portrait in her studio.

Set on a quiet cobblestone street, An’s studio is bathed in natural light and filled with books and piles of wood chunks that must air dry for five to 10 years before becoming instruments or risk warping. She shares the two-room studio with her husband, Wangsoo Han, who’s also a violin maker.

On a recent Monday, An was hunched over a thick 20-inch piece of wood held in place by two metal clamps. Pressing her body down for leverage, she scraped the wood with a gouge, removing layers, her hands steady and firm. She was forming a curving neck called a “scroll,” one of the later steps of making a violin or cello. On this day, the violin maker was immersed on a commission for a cello, which shares a similar crafting process.

Asked which part of the process is the most crucial, she answered without hesitation: all of them.

“Even very small details can affect the sound.”

Violins like An’s, made in the tradition of Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri, require about two months of work and sell for about 16,000 to 17,000 euros, or $17,500 to $18,500. “I can make a violin in three weeks, but I don’t want to,” An said. “This object is very precious to the person purchasing it.”

An was 17 when she hatched her plan to learn the craft: She would move in with an American family in a Chicago suburb so that she could attend a local high school, master English and eventually study at the Chicago School of Violin Making. There were no such schools in Korea at the time. Her parents, distraught about her moving so far away to pursue an uncertain career path, tried to stop her.

“I didn’t eat for days,” An said. Finally, they gave in. “When I said goodbye to my parents at the airport, they were crying,” she said. “I wasn’t. I was too excited.”

Two years after moving to Illinois, she discovered that one of the best known schools for violin makers, the International School of Violin Making , was actually in Cremona. So in 2011, at age 20, she moved to a new country again.

Cremona was home to some of history’s most famous luthiers, makers of stringed instruments: Stradivari; Andrea Amati , considered “the father of the violin”; and the Guarneri family. For the 160 to 200 violin makers in Cremona today, the sound quality of the masters remains the ultimate goal. “The traditional method is not about experimenting,” An said.

Around the studio, small pots of pigment, for varnishing, sat on shelves and tables alongside jars of powders — ground glass and minerals — for polishing. On a wall were dozens of knives, chisels and saws. Also present: dentist’s tools to scratch the instrument for a more antique look.

photo

An uses rocks or dry pasta “to scratch the instrument so it looks more antique,” she said.

“I believe in beauty in imperfection.”

An is the youngest member of a consortium in Cremona dedicated to upholding violin-making traditions. She is so immersed in the Cremonese method of violin making that, at the suggestion of a mentor, she created an artist’s name, Anna Arietti, to better fit in with Italian culture.

An important moment is when luthiers place their label inside the instrument, called a “baptism.” To make her label, An stamps her ink signature onto a small piece of paper — a browned page from a secondhand book, giving the impression of age. Then, using a traditional homemade mixture of melted bovine skin and rabbit skin as a long-lasting adhesive, she glues the label inside one half of the instrument. She also burns the signature of her Korean name into the instrument with a tiny heated brand.

Afterward, the two halves are sealed together, completing the main body of the instrument. Her Italian artist’s name remains inside, intact as long as the violin is.

“That’s why I wanted to be a violin maker,” An said. “At least one person who plays my violin will remember me 100 or 200 years later.”

After Election Rout, Compromise May Better Serve South Korea's Combative President

SEOUL (Reuters) - After rising to power by embracing uncompromising and sometimes combative politics, South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol may have to rethink his signature style if he hopes to protect his legacy and party after a crushing election defeat.

Yoon, who was elected in 2022 for a single five-year term, is facing growing criticism, including from some members of his own party, for sticking to a hardline stance on a number of hot-button issues and scandals in the run-up to Wednesday's elections that saw the opposition bloc led by the Democratic Party (DP) retain its control in the National Assembly.

Critics accused Yoon of failing to build on his People Power Party (PPP)'s initial popularity, engineered by its chief Han Dong-hoon, by repeatedly rejecting his advice on several issues, including accusations of bribery against the First Lady.

From the beginning of his term, the president has also refused to meet DP head Lee Jae-myung, who narrowly lost to Yoon in the closest presidential election ever and faces criminal corruption charges.

The president has also struck a hardline against protests and labour strikes, and has been accused by rights activists of wielding the legal system against critics.

"The public's message is loud and clear, President Yoon, you've got to change," said Rhee Jong-hoon, a conservative-leaning political analyst. "You need to talk to the other side, and meet the opposition leader, and pass bills through coordination with the opposition if you need."

Lee Jun-han, professor of political science at Incheon National University, also urged Yoon to become more lenient, but both analysts said he may struggle to change.

"The hope of the media and voters may be that the president should take the election results carefully and make changes to the way state administration is conducted in the future," Lee said. "The president's leadership style is not one that easily embraces those things."

A former prosecutor with no previous political experience, Yoon was nicknamed the "fighting cock" for his tenacity as a lawyer and was courted by the conservative bloc after he showcased his uncompromising nature by filing bribery charges against a key aide to outgoing President Moon Jae-in - the man who hired him.

Yoon said he would "humbly" accept the results of Wednesday's vote, work to improve the economy, and reform his administration, with several top aides, the prime minister and party leader Han offering to resign.

In the wake of the vote, his office said the president would communicate more with the opposition.

"I wish things were handled in a more preemptive manner," one government official said. "Responses were sort of slow at times which made trouble worse, and that apparently swayed people against us."

Another official admitted the results were worse than expected, and would complicate the final years of Yoon's administration. Both officials declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter.

Just weeks earlier, Yoon was improving in opinion polls largely due to his medical reform plan and opposition infighting over nominations.

But as surveys increasingly pointed to a sweeping victory for the opposition days before the polls, some PPP members, including a candidate running in a key battleground area in Seoul, started to demand Yoon withdraw from the party, though others dismissed these calls as premature.

"His way of handling contentious issues is unsophisticated and one-sided with no way out at all, and voters effectively vetoed that in the election," said Kim Hyung-joon, a professor at Pai Chai University.

"The president should fix his government's decision making mechanism so that he can remain the last troubleshooter, leaving it to party leaders and ministers to resolve conflicts and arrange a settlement first."

Yoon Hee-woong, a public opinion analysis director at Opinion Live, said if Yoon wants to preserve a legacy, the election should be a wake up call.

"Every president has ambition to make a good record within his or her term," he said. "And to win public support, they can't avoid calls for communication."
