My Grandparents

I was lucky enough to grow up in my grandparent’s house. Our family lived with my grandparents since I was little. As my paternal grandfather passed away when I was very young, I only remember a few memories of him. One thing I surely remember is he used to brush his teeth twice daily without fail. I adopted this habit and ever since I have been doing the same.

My maternal grandparents have been my true systems of support. I am lucky enough to have grown up around such inspirational people. My grandfather was a principal of a college, so he always emphasized the importance of education . He helped us with our homework when my parents were not available. I spent my vacations at their place as I enjoyed living with them.

Similarly, my grandparents always embraced me with open arms. They used to wait for every holiday for our arrival. My grandmother made delicious pickles and meals which we relished greatly. She taught me a few recipes too and tips and tricks that are very useful even today. I simply adore my grandparents for instilling good values in me and my parents and for giving us a safe space to grow up in.

What a Grandparent’s Unconditional Love Does

When adults describe their grandparents, one phrase appears again and again: unconditional love . When we are healthy, mature grandparents functioning well in the family, love and grace become the driving forces of our relationships with our grands.

Here are some examples we’ve collected:

They did not have the best of everything or a lot of anything, but they made sure I was loved unconditionally. I miss them!

[From Grandma] I have learned how to love unconditionally, to forgive without question, to be a positive example … and to not be so judgmental of others.

My grandma was a nurse who taught me to care about life, to serve others, and to become a happy and kindhearted person. I’m convinced grandmas are God’s angels who touch our lives and hearts with their unconditional love .

My grandma raised six children and ran the family farm after my grandpa’s death at a young age, and she did all this without so much as a complaint. She also didn’t allow sadness to take over. She taught us unconditional love and acceptance.

Grandparenting is about giving unconditional love, sitting on the floor and playing without worrying about the dirty dishes, and recognizing the important and blessed role I play in the lives of my grandchildren. I only hope I can live up to the example my grandma set.

A grandparent’s unconditional love sticks with children for many years. But where does that come from?

Part of it is from the freedom and hope and joy we feel with our grandchildren that we may not have known as parents. We have less of our ego wrapped up in our grandchildren’s behavior or performance, and so we accept them for who they are, we love them unconditionally, and we can be there for them in a way no one else can.

Most of us would do anything in our power for those precious grandkids. And sometimes that’s easy, but often our love will be tested by broken relationships , or when a grandchild takes a path that goes against what we believe.

But really, aren’t those the times that define love as unconditional ?

Maybe love will motivate us to appreciate the person even when we don’t approve of their actions. Or we admit that we were wrong and ask forgiveness . Maybe we’ll make sacrifices so we can take on a bigger role in mentoring or caring for our grandkids during a time of need.

Those grace-filled connections with our grandchildren will also be vitally important during the child’s teen years, which are often difficult for everyone in the family. When communication breaks down or emotions are running high at home, everyone benefits when grandparents are available. Parents can go to their parents for wisdom, and teens can turn to Grandpa or Grandma for unconditional love. We grandparents also help to meet needs in ways the parents can’t, or that they don’t see, which can be a huge help.

That’s what love does. And grandparents can do it like no one else.

We live in a society that values youth and warehouses its oldsters in “long-term care” facilities. Out of sight, out of mind. Grandparents, naturally, fall into this group. Consequently, there is little research being conducted on the significant role grandparents can play in the lives of their grandchildren.

Grandparents whose grandchildren live with them play an essential role as primary caregivers. That is pretty straightforward. But even grandparents whose grandchildren do not reside with them can relieve the mother by babysitting regularly.

They can also be a source of parenting tips for their sons or daughters who may struggle with caring for a newborn. By trial and error, grandparents have learned natural remedies for the common problems babies experience, such as diarrhea, constipation, colic, fussiness, and the like.

Not all mothers can always be with their newborn and young infant during the first two crucial years. Sometimes a mother or father must leave their child for lengthy periods of time. This can be devastating for an infant who feels abandoned no matter how often you try to explain that mommy will be back in a week.

Another way a baby may not receive full attention from his mother is if she suffers from post-partum depression or addictions.

Most regrettably, there are also women who, for many reasons, did not want to become pregnant and have a child. When the unwanted child is born, she might not be welcome. She is lucky to have her basic needs met but, otherwise, will likely receive little loving care from her mother. There will be a marked deficit in bonding and attachment with subsequent harmful consequences for the child’s physical and mental development.

These are just some life situations in which grandparents can be of invaluable help to their grandson or daughter.

A few years ago, I received the following letter:

My husband and I went to my grandmother's grave for the first time, for she died while we were in British Columbia some years ago. While we were looking for her grave, I heard in my mind a "lullaby"—I've heard bits of this song in my mind all my life, without ever knowing what it is—but it came on very strongly while I was searching for her grave.

When I found her grave, I didn't want my husband near—and I felt embarrassed for feeling that way about him being there, for he had helped me find her grave all that morning. But it felt like I wanted to be alone with her, to plug into that special feeling we had shared together once again.

I knew "she" wasn't in that grave at all—but I still felt these things towards her, and that song was so strong there in my mind. I don't know what that "lullaby" means. It is very gentle music, very light and beautiful, and it just filled that graveyard that day.

Until I met my husband, she was the only person I saw who loved me, from her eyes!

What a beautiful way to speak of bonding and attachment. Bonding is usually understood to refer to a mother’s, father’s, or any other person’s emotional relationship with their child, preferably from conception, but clearly, after birth.

Attachment is the same loving feeling by the child for her mother and others who have shown interest and kindness to the child. A caregiver who is reliably available and responsive to a baby's needs forms the basis for secure attachment, competence in exploring the environment , forming relationships, and developing self-esteem .

Attachment to a grandparent will gradually develop as a result of regularly being hugged, stroked, spoken to in soothing tones, listening to lullabies, and receiving love from the grandparent’s eyes.

Grandparents provide grandchildren a conduit to a family’s past, accomplishments, trials, and tribulations. It is important for children to know their roots and their cultural heritage. Parents are often too busy to talk about such things. Many times, they have forgotten such historical data or want to forget them because they are ashamed of them.

Scientific studies and anecdotal evidence show what most of us experienced but hardly ever put in words: that typically maternal grandparents are closer to grandchildren than paternal grandparents. Why should that be so? Several factors seem to be responsible.

For one, mothers are generally closer to their mothers than to their mothers-in-law. For that reason, they will often have their mothers present at the birth and to help with the baby once they are home. Thus, a preference has been established from the beginning, which endures.

Having your own daughter going through nine months of pregnancy and giving birth feels very different from having your son become a father, essentially getting a free ride.

Also, many psychologists have remarked on the observation that the relationship between a woman and her mother-in-law is complicated by the fact that many mothers do not approve of the woman their son has married for a variety of reasons such as race, religion, education , social class, age, etc. Mothers want the very best for their children, and the person they marry often does not meet the expectations of the future mother-in-law.

Whether a grandparent lives close by or a distance away will make a difference in how often they can visit and establish a meaningful relationship with their grandchild. Because of the mother’s closeness to her daughter, maternal grandparents tend to live nearer to her than paternal grandparents.

In one study of UK teenagers , the maternal grandmother was the most important family member besides their immediate family. The maternal grandfather was next.

Of course, the attitude of the grandparent will determine the quality of their relationship with their grandchild. Grandparents who want to be involved in the lives of their grandchildren and manage to be respectful of parental roles have the highest likelihood of success. And this is true for both branches of the nuclear family.

How to navigate the joys and challenges of grandparenting, a new book celebrates being a grandparent and guides us through its complexities..

Recently, my adult children let me know that when they have children, they want me to be involved in their care. I was thrilled, but also humbled. Will I have the energy? How will I balance my work? And what if I make a misstep?

Many people my age delight in their newfound role with grandchildren. Yet I know others who founder at the edges of their children’s families, unable to find a comfortable way to engage. They want to be more involved, but their overtures are rejected or their relationship is unhappily limited.

In her new book, Unconditional Love: A Guide to Navigating the Joys and Challenges of Being a Grandparent Today , Jane Isay reminds us of the value of grandparents but also delineates the important rules of engagement—when to deepen the conversation, when to back off, and how to stay on your children’s and grandchildren’s teams. Books or articles on grandparenting are few, and they frequently paint simplified or idealized pictures of this set of complex relationships. Isay’s perspective is nuanced, practical, and hopeful, and is a wonderful resource for grandparents-to-be.

The gifts of grandparents

My own grandparents were safe harbors in my turbulent childhood. My mother’s mother, a prohibitionist and Sunday school teacher, was the person who was most interested in my thoughts—on any subject—which made me feel valued. My mother’s father, aloof and removed, found a way to reach out by making me rye bread, playing cribbage with me, and taking me on his long walks that followed frozen rivers through the woods. With both of these grandparents, I found a peace and acceptance that was absent in my immediate family.

In the best cases , grandparents’ unconditional love, slower pace, and careful attention nurture grandchildren’s “moral imagination”—the “ability to put themselves in the shoes of others, to understand their own feelings, and to respond to the world with kindness and acceptance.” Grandparents’ unconditional acceptance helps to grow children’s empathy; grandparents impart courage, as grandchildren witness living examples of lives filled with love, sacrifice, and struggle; and grandparents’ encouragement of children’s dreams builds confidence and personal agency. Grandparents are more likely to see grandchildren for who they really are, not who they wish them to be, writes Isay.

Grandparents also hold a unique position in the family system, Isay explains. They are the keepers of the stories that bridge multiple generations and that contribute to a child’s growing sense of autobiography —where they came from, who their ancestors are, and the qualities they’re connected to.

Isay offers tips on creating channels of connection and communication with grandchildren: how to enter a child’s world, how to stay in relationship as they grow, how to create the rituals that foster consistency and fun, and when to let go. It is not the material gifts or the forbidden indulgences that are memorable to grandchildren, she says, but the gifts of your perspective and access to your world—taking them birdwatching, watching your approach to panhandlers, validating their emerging truth (like their gender identity), and accepting a teenager’s growing—but temporary—sense of distance.

Isay’s numerous interviews with grandparents and grandchildren illustrate the creative ways that individual people navigate this special relationship. One grandfather paused his interview with Isay to greet his four-year-old grandson the way he always does—by hiding from the boy as he walked through the door and then jumping out to surprise him in a gleeful meeting ritual.

The grandparent-parent relationship

My favorite part of the book addresses something most grandparenting books overlook—the relationship between grandparents and their grown children (and children’s partners). Tending to these relationships, Isay reminds, is not only rewarding but important to stabilizing the fabric of love that supports a grandchild.

With your own adult children, Isay says, communication can be easy and effortless because of a long history together. Or, if there are unresolved conflicts from the past, it can be more difficult. Add to the mix that your children’s partners are challenged with figuring out where they belong in your extended family, and you have some potential stumbling blocks to harmony. Isay encourages an attitude of respect, communication, forgiveness, and self-restraint.

In particular, observe how your adult children want to parent, she advises. Support them by respecting their rules (about sugar, screen time, material possessions, and more). And if there’s trouble between your child and their co-parent, stay neutral, or get out of the house. Keep your criticisms, opinions, and revelations about how you did things to yourself. “Respect makes life easier and keeps the welcome mat out,” she says.

Yet Isay recognizes that grandparents have concerns and wants, too. She deftly and kindly advises on how to navigate your own needs with the new family. For example, your limits regarding how much time or money you can spend on your grandchildren may require intentional conversations to avoid misinterpretations—for example, that you don’t like them or that you have favorites.

The limits of Unconditional Love

Isay’s voice is one I pay attention to. She is a masterful editor who has brought numerous well-known psychology books to the public and has authored many of her own books , as well. (And while this may or may not reflect on her wisdom about childrearing, it feels worth noting that her son is the founder of the beautiful and humane audio project StoryCorps .) Her prose is gentle and light, and she shares her own feelings of joy, reward, humility, and hurt with a seasoned and mature candor.

Her book does falter in a few ways, though. Research shows that it’s the quality of the relationships within the family that matter most to children’s developmental outcomes. On that point, Isay seems to offer mixed messages: While she rightly advocates authentic and empathic relationship-tending, she every so often slips into the view that families are political entities to be managed—that adult children have the power to welcome or distance you, for example, and that every grandparent’s goal is “all about access to the baby.” While both may be true, the second conversation can undermine the goal of the first.

By framing a grandparent’s goal as “access,” Isay risks reinforcing the common lament of new parents—that grandparents become obsessed with their new grandbaby and in the process ignore the new parents at a time when they need extra understanding and care. In addition, what may feel to a grandparent like “limited access” can be a healthy and legitimate boundary drawn by a parent who has the right to do so, but Isay does not fully explore this perspective. Perhaps limited access could be positively reframed as a red flag for a relationship in need of attention.

Isay discusses diverse grandparenting scenarios, such as when distance makes cultivating a relationship challenging, when adult children need serious help, and when grandparents have to take over parenting responsibilities. But her general point of view seems to assume an intact family comprised of two heterosexual parents, when research shows that this is no longer the “traditional” American family. Fewer than half of American children grow up with two married, heterosexual parents who are in their first marriage. As a result of this disconnect, some potential readers may feel overlooked.

Although steeped in a well-digested knowledge of psychology, Unconditional Love is not a science-based book. Isay does not often support her claims, and her interviews are simply anecdotal and illustrative, which she acknowledges. The book also fails to address the situation where the grandparent may be harmful, unkind, absent, or narcissistic. Indeed, many grandparents need much more skill-building than a book like this offers. However, for the grandparent who is already self-aware and in need of just a little more insight, this is a wonderful orienting compass to a new phase of life.

Development is lifelong, and becoming a grandparent can foster growth in not only the grandparent but the entire family system. My own parents—who raised me in a conflicted and dysfunctional environment—became terrific grandparents to my daughters, offering loving arms, teaching skills like knitting and woodworking, and beaming with joy and pride in all their accomplishments. They are my children’s roots, their tribe, and their cheerleaders.

I hope to do as well for my own grandchildren.

How my grandparents taught me to love by faith.

Who has inspired you to love by faith? How has it changed your life?

For many reasons I have inherited an unlikely legacy.

My family is a mix of races and ethnicities brought together from three continents through generations of adoption and marriage.

As a Korean-born girl adopted into an American family in the Midwest, I often struggled to find my place between worlds. I landed in the blank hyphenated space between Asian and American, thoroughly one, but seen as another. Over the years, my sense of belonging has been drawn significantly from my grandparents’ belief in the diversity and depth of the body of Christ. 

My father’s parents led textured lives that, in retrospect, seem larger than life. I had the pleasure of knowing them best in their mellowed and observant later years, when memories are warmer and edges softer. The story of their lives came to me over Frosted Flakes for breakfast on a sunny Denver porch, in dusty trunks of old letters and trinkets, and the interrupted telling of tales as each attempted to tell it right.

My grandmother was raised by a single mother with her brothers in Ohio. Later, during the Depression, she ventured to southern Virginia to teach, and married my grandfather, a man whose Virginia roots are centuries old and include a Confederate general. It’s a complex history of land and slaves, war and loss, faith and reconciliation.

During the segregation years in southern Virginia, my grandfather’s business was completely open to all customers regardless of race. He hired local Black tradesmen rather than seeking white tradesmen from neighboring towns. An invitation to join the all-white country club was declined, despite the boost it could have brought to his business.

Eventually my grandparents left Virginia, but their lives were set in a pattern of loving by faith. For them it was a natural extension of their journey to a deeper and more personal faith in Jesus Christ. The result was a genuinely open life that shaped their family for generations to come.

The richness of this legacy has deepened as I’ve matured and come to a place where I can see how boldly and courageously they lived. From them I’ve taken three key things with me:

A Grandparent’s Love

What makes it so special?

The love of grandparents is a special kind of love. Some children have deep bonds with their grandparents that last into adulthood, while others do not. The quality of our relationship with our grandparents depends on several factors. When the right kind of relationship is in place, both grandparents and grandchildren benefit in important ways.

A survey from the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) found that 90% of grandparents said they played an important role in the lives of their grandchildren. 1 Another survey from Pew Research found that 22% of grandparents said they provided daily childcare services for their grandchildren, while 72% said they provided care occasionally. 2

Grandparents with an active role in caring for their grandchildren often find their relationship evolving from caregiver to confidant and trusted advisor. It’s thought that this deepening of the relationship occurs because grandparents can play a more objective role in the grandchild’s life. Being removed from the daily drama that goes on at home, the grandparent can be a safe haven offering love and support with more perceived neutrality.

Research shows that children lucky enough to have strong relationships with their grandparents benefit in a number of ways including better behavior, social skills, self-confidence, and even academic performance. 3

So what makes the difference between having a strong relationship with grandparents or not? Family intervention specialists have narrowed it down to several key factors.

Living near grandparents is the strongest predictor of grandchildren having a close relationship with them. 4 The closer they are the more available they will be for personal interactions. As with any relationship, absence doesn’t make the heart grow fonder. The more time we spend in person with anyone, the more that relationship will grow. Although technology is no substitute for in-person interaction, (you can’t get a hug through the computer) some grandparents who live far away and can’t travel regularly use internet services like ZOOM to do live video visits with their grandchildren.

Frequency of Contact

It goes without saying that even though children may live close to their grandparents, they actually need to visit each other on a regular basis to build strong bonds. Unfortunately in the case of divorce, children often find their relationship with the non-custodial grandparents suffering from a loss of contact, as visits with the custodial grandparents increase. Because courts overwhelmingly favor maternal custody, it’s nearly always the children’s relationship with their paternal grandparents that diminishes no matter how close they live. 5

Grandparents’ Role within the Family

When grandparents provide childcare for grandchildren they have far more opportunities to bond. 6 Studies show that it’s the regular presence of the grandparent rather than the function he or she performs that is central to the bonding. 7 So even if a grandparent doesn’t provide daily care for the grandchildren, he or she can make a point to stop by several times a week to play with them. The point is to be there for them…often.

Intergenerational Support

In some cultures, children are taught from an early age that they have obligations to help everyone in the family, including the elders that cared for them. As they grow up, this might include helping to care for other children and their elderly grandparents, as well. Across the generations, responsibilities are shared including financial assistance and completing tasks. Children growing up in this type of household tend to show stronger relationships with grandparents than those who live in homes that do no emphasize intergenerational support. 8

Making It Last

In healthy families, children are naturally closer to their parents and siblings than their grandparents. Even so, that doesn’t make the special bond with grandparents second rate or of lesser value. In fact, as grandchildren grow and their grandparents’ social circle decreases as their friends, siblings and spouses begin to pass away, bonds with grandchildren become more important to help them remain socially connected.

Perhaps the most important point of fostering a relationship with grandchildren that will last is to start as early as possible. Relationships made with very young children and sustained over time have the strongest foundations. 9 It’s also important to know that when grandparents are close with their adult children, the odds are very good that they will have a strong relationship with their grandchildren, as well.

Within my paper I will be discussing the love story of my grandparents and how they have affected my views on my everyday life and my aspects on how their love has impacted me. I will also address their actual stories told by them in different perspectives. I have given clear examples on how my grandparent’s lives have turned into a successful and admirable courtship story that will be passed on from generation to generation within my family. Lastly, I will address the Roles Theory and how it applies to the importance of their marriage and explain why

Courtship Story: My Grandparents, Hubert and Doris Chrestenson

When I am reminded to count my blessings, I often am thankful for the obvious things: having a nice house, food, clothes, a car to drive, good grades, strong athletic ability, friends, and family. But recently, I have discovered something I am extremely grateful for that can often be taken for granted: my grandparents.   As your grandparents’ health declines, which it will, and in the times that you find yourself becoming sad, remember to smile at the life that they have lived, long or short, the important values they have bestowed upon you, and the various memories you have created with them. Overflow them with gratitude and make sure they know how much you truly love them. Although they eventually will grow old and leave this Earth, there is one that will always stay which is their stories. One of my favorite stories is how the element of love created our family. Here is their love story.

My grandma Doris: We met at the age of three out in a little sandbox outside of the church at Sunday school, we went to the same grade school, middle school, and high school together in a small town in the state of Washington called Grandview. I was the captain of the cheer team, homecoming and prom queen, and was pretty popular with me and my girlfriends. Your grandfather was one of the only boys that drove a Model T to school and played in the band at all the school dances. You know the movie The Notebook ? The beginning, I somewhat believe that movie reminds me of us. Hard of hearing, sometimes hard of remembering but the love was there. We were what you call high school sweethearts I assume. We both left for college at Washington State and got married in 1947. We didn’t have that technology or internet to keep in touch. The only time we saw each other is if we saw each other. Three years down the road we had your father in 1950, the next year, Hube left for the navy and I was scared for him but I had no doubt in my mind that we would work through it. Over the years, we moved at least twelve times before we settled down, and yeah that’s about it that’s us.

My grandpa Hube: Yeah, we grew up in the same small town yet I lived out on the farm and she lived in the city. I was farm boy with a model T and play in the high school band, she was one of those cheer girls at those football games. Her family was well known in town and mine was full of trouble and outcast. Her family was always so involved filled with big hearts and I was more on my own and did things by myself. I never thought I had a chance with Doris yet look at us now (he chuckles). When I messed up I brought home flowers, sucked up my ego and said my sorry’s, and yes we did have hardships but we always made it through. We had many transitions from college, to when I went off to the Navy, she was a Nurse assistant, I was a mathematician at Reed, she was a regular competitive Tennis player at the country club. Life got busy but that’s what kept us together, gave us time to miss each other and the drive to rush home to tell each other about our days. We were certainly different but that’s what made it interesting. 67 years later, I still find myself opening up the door for her when I don’t even think about it, and her homemade apple pies never get old, every single one tastes just as good as the last.

My grandparents have been biggest influence on me besides my parents. My grandparents were the lucky ones, almost ones you hear about in fairytales. They were both raised during the Great Depression, a time when if something was broken, you had to fix it, and couldn’t just throw it away. Throughout our life stages, we face people who impact us positively and others who impact us negatively. Some of them change our ways of thinking and modify our perspectives of life whereas others teach us life lessons through personal interactions and mistakes. It takes time to find someone to look up to and to trust but luckily I was born into a family that was supportive, trust-worthy, and concerned about my future decisions from day one. In the past twenty years, my grandparents and parents have constantly kept me on track to live everyday as if I am not promised tomorrow, to make each day better that the previous day, and to treat others the way I would want to be treated. A few months back they celebrated their 67 th  wedding anniversary. They have influenced me to believe that love does exist and that marriage is still a sacred event in life.

I come from a family where every holiday is spent eating around a dinner table and enjoyable memories are cherished. This old fashion concept is rare and almost a way of the past. The quote mentions the bonding of parents and their children, in simpler words it can be seen as quality over quantity. I have sometimes taken for granted that I have a family that can support me financially, emotionally and are willing to share their resources and simply love me.  I come from a small country town in the Willamette Valley, where many relationships start in grade school or at church that last through every high school dance and end up being growing old together. I grew up thinking this was a complete norm, but last year when I moved to Portland, I found I had been living in almost a fairytale protected from reality for the past 19 years.

Although in another prespective, I was not exposed to many same sex relationships, I always had the belief that love is love and that anyone should be able to whomever they chose. This is a belief that I have always supported even though I attended a private conservative Catholic high school, where every other person thought very differently each person has their own different beliefs and mentalities. My grandparents taught me that there will always be a person with a different opinion. The world is changing. Divorce, teen pregnancy, and birth control are almost a norm in American society. For example, in the past year, I have noticed individuals younger than me having children as if high school is the average age to give birth. There are many new types of families that has transformed society. Hopefully, in the future, society will see any gay marriage as any other marriage.

I read my grandparents' love letters from the 1920s. It was a gift to see how their relationship began.

When my 89-year-old grandmother moved out of her home, I was tasked with going through her personal belongings. I didn't know where to start. Her house was small and tidy, but she had no use for minimalism like I did. She'd kept everything.

I began in her bedroom. The dresser was overflowing with scarves, jewelry, and empty perfume bottles. It took me all day to go through six drawers. But tucked away securely in a string-wrapped envelope was a stack of love letters my grandfather wrote to her when they were dating. These treasured notes from the 1920s were fragile and falling apart — and a time capsule of what dating was like 100 years ago.

I read all the letters with my grandmother's blessing

Watching my own two kids navigate dating in their 20s , my grandparents would be amazed at their constant access to one another and ability to track each other's location . But there's something to be said for opening a letter in the mail and seeing a loved one's handwriting. For perspective, my grown kids raised in the digital age don't know how to address an envelope.

Judging from the letters I read (with my grandmother's blessing), they wrote to each other daily, hustling to get to the Post office in time to make the next day's mail. My grandfather mentions a time he "made five trips to the Post office for that one letter," today's equivalent of picking up our phone every five minutes to check for a text.

FaceTime would've been inconceivable, and phone calls were expensive. Since they lived 30 miles apart — she in San Marcos, Texas, and he in Austin (which in one letter he predicted "will be a city someday"), seeing each other was a challenge. It involved long bus rides or, when he was employed as a steel worker in Fort Worth, transfers and a train ride on the Texas Special through Waco.

One Sunday night, my grandfather missed the bus back to Austin — Uber would have been a dream come true — and spent a restless night in a cold horse stall. He was late for work the next day, but his boss let it slide because he could tell "this man is in love."

I learned about history and what their lives were like

Postmarked 1923 and 1924, most began with an endearment like "My dearest little dear" or simply, "My dear Alice." This cache of letters not only allowed me a glimpse into their young lives but was a much more engrossing account of history than any book I'd ever read. He wrote of strikes, fear of unemployment, prohibition , and how much he missed her.

Some facets of life in the 1920s are relatable today. He always asked her for pictures ("in the black dress you showed me" or "in your new swimsuit") and finally bought her a Kodak camera so she could take photos of herself. He sent off for a Sears Roebuck catalog so he could mail-order medicine. And he eventually found a place for them to live once they were married near a Piggly Wiggly grocer "so we won't have to tote the groceries far."

As an only child , I'm struck by the privilege of seeing this intimate side of my heritage. I know how it ended — my grandparents sitting at their Formica kitchen table, watching the hummingbirds and sharing the daily newspaper — but what a gift to see how it began.

Life may be easier now, but it was simpler then. I saved notes my husband wrote me when we were dating, but my kids and their friends don't communicate this way anymore. Love letters, written in cursive and sealed with a kiss, may truly be a relic of the past.

The Fever Dream of Landing an Apartment

A woman with a young son started looking for a place before her lease expired, but even her most far-fetched solutions — Buy an RV? — haven’t panned out.

Felicia Russo says her friends tell her she seems calm. But she says she’s freaking out on the inside: Her housing search is keeping her up at night.

Also part of the problem: Lately, she finds herself sleeping in a toddler bed.

For six years, Ms. Russo, 40, lived on the first floor of a cape-style house in Queens around New Hyde Park, Long Island, where she grew up. She was paying $1,400 a month for the space, but she’s been without housing to call her own ever since her lease there expired in mid-March.

For a couple weeks, she stayed in the basement of a friend’s place nearby. Now, she’s at her parents’ house, rent free, sleeping in a room with her spunky 5-year-old son, MJ Korol. She set up a toddler bed for him and an air mattress for herself, but he prefers the mattress, so they’ll switch.

With three of her sisters and one of their boyfriends also living in the house, Ms. Russo said, space is tight.

She did not want it to be this way, but her search for a studio or one-bedroom apartment within her budget — up to $1,600 — has not been fruitful.

“I really just did not have any idea of how hard it was going to be to find a place. Everything is so expensive, like, rooms for rent for $1,200 — just rooms in somebody’s house,” said Ms. Russo, who works in operations at N.Y.U. Langone. “There’s just nothing. It’s crazy.”

Ms. Russo enlisted friends and co-workers to help her hunt.

“I’ve been asking everyone I know,” she said. “At night, I’ll just be looking through my text messages or my contacts and be like, ‘Oh, I haven’t asked this person yet.’”

She signed up for a Facebook account, posted an ad seeking housing on Craigslist and perused a website that aims to connect single parents looking for housing. She stays up late, scouring listings online.

Many messages she sent remain unanswered. Some people who did respond wouldn’t accommodate her dog, a 9-year-old beagle mix named Rebar. Others refused to rent to a person with a child.

“No kids, no dogs? I’m just gonna get rid of everybody,” Ms. Russo said with a rueful laugh. “My God, man, I can’t have nothing.”

She’s seen lots of likely scams, with people requesting application fees as high as $150, even though the fees are capped at $20 under state law.

On cooking: Ms. Russo found a $1,200 listing for what she thought was a studio apartment with a private entrance in Levittown, on Long Island. But then she discovered there was no kitchen. “I have an air fryer, but I need a kitchen,” she said. She and MJ like to make muffins and eggs. He has a step stool especially built to reach the counters so he can help peel and chop vegetables.

One last hurrah: MJ’s birthday was in February, and Ms. Russo threw him two parties in their old house in New Hyde Park over the course of a weekend: one with his friends from school and another with family members. The theme, at MJ’s request, was “ Skibidi Toilet ,” a web series on YouTube that involves human heads coming out of toilets. Ms. Russo procured stickers, decorations and cupcake toppers with characters from the series, and placed snacks in ceramic containers shaped like toilet bowls.

Ms. Russo has looked for places on Long Island and in White Plains and New Jersey, but she would prefer to stay within the city limits, ideally in or close to New Hyde Park.

“I like the city schools,” she said.

MJ was in the city’s 3-K program and is now in the universal pre-K program. Ms. Russo would like to enroll him in the city’s free summer camp next year, when he’s eligible as a kindergartner. Plus, her parents provide child care, picking MJ up from school and taking him to their house each day.

For a time, Ms. Russo was looking into purchasing a recreational vehicle or a travel trailer. She visited a dealership and was struck by the quality of what she saw.

“These trailers are beautiful — the kitchens and the storage and the bathroom,” she said. “I was like, oh, my God, these are nicer than some of the apartments I see or rooms for rent.”

But she reconsidered when she learned about the associated logistics: accessing potable water, moving the vehicle on a regular basis, dumping waste and figuring out electricity.

“It seems like a good idea, but I think in the long run it’s going to be just as expensive as an apartment with twice the work,” she said. “That’s not my lifestyle.”

In the meantime, she’s continuing to push ahead, as demoralizing as the process can be.

On the way to see a promising listing in Calverton, Long Island, recently, she realized it was for a 55-and-older community. She’d missed that detail in her haste to lock it down. She pulled the car over and began to cry.

From the back seat, MJ tried to comfort her.

“He’s like, ‘Mom, count to 10. Take 10 deep breaths, OK?’ And he counts for me, and he’s like, ‘OK, you’re crying? It’s OK. It’s gonna be OK,’” Ms. Russo said. “I’m like, ‘I hope so, Bubs. I’m trying to make it OK.’”

Is 'The Sign' the End of Bluey ? A Look Back at the Show's Most Emotional Episodes

The supersized season 3 finale was the latest installment of the Australian kids' show that made parents cry

Bluey may be a show aimed at preschoolers, but it's also one of the most emotional series currently airing on television.

Case in point: Bluey 's critically-acclaimed, instant classic season 3 finale "The Sign." The supersized episode premiered April 14 on Disney+ and immediately left parents reaching for the tissues. Part of that emotional reaction may have stemmed from the episode's sense of finality, which left some viewers wondering if the Heelers were signing off for good.

Thankfully, that doesn't appear to be the case. While the wait for the next batch of Bluey episodes may be a long one, it seems the Heeler family will be returning to TV screens for another round of imaginative play, family fun and tearjerking moments that leave parents surreptitiously dabbing at their eyes during screen time.

In a recent interview with BBC 4 , Bluey producer Sam Moor clarified that Bluey, Bingo and the rest of the Heeler family still have more adventures ahead of them.

"It is the question on everybody's lips," she said. "No it is not the end for Bluey . I'm sure we have many more surprises in store for you ... and we are thinking what would be next."

Whether that means a fourth season is on the way, a movie or some other iteration of Bluey remains to be seen. For now, fans can at least rest easy knowing they haven't seen the last of the Heelers.

However, knowing Bluey is returning doesn't change how powerful "The Sign" was. The 28-minute special is far from the first time the series has left its fans feeling emotionally compromised. Read on for a list of the most emotional Bluey episodes so far.

"The Sign," Season 3, Episode 49

The season 3 finale found the Heeler family at a crossroads as Bandit received a job offer that would require the family to move away from their Brisbane home shortly after Uncle Radley and Frisky officially tied the knot in the backyard. Much of the episode is focused on Bluey trying to remove the "for sale" sign from the front of the house in hopes that will prevent the move, however, the most tearjerking moment comes near the end when Bluey's little sister Bingo realizes selling the house also means moving out.

Bingo's heartbreaking reaction combined with mom Chilli's struggle to come to terms with the move causes Bandit to have a last-minute change of heart and pull up the sign himself. This leads to a Heeler family hug designed to hit viewers straight in the heart.

Additionally, the episode also includes a heartwarming blink-and-you'll-miss-it scene just for parents that reveals Chilli's big sister, Brandy, who previously struggled with fertility issues, is now expecting.

"Onesies," Season 3, Episode 31

It's not often children's television tackles the topic of infertility, but "Onesies" did just that. The episode focuses on a visit from Chilli's sister Brandy (voiced by Rose Byrne ) as she visits her nieces for the first time in four years. During one particularly poignant moment, Chilli gently explains to Bluey the reason her aunt hasn't been around is because there's something she wants, but can't have because "it's not meant be."

For the older members of the audience, it's clear the thing Brandy wants most in the world is children of her own.

"Sleepytime," Season 2, Episode 26

The beautiful animation of the dreamy episode "Sleepytime" is so stirring it could make make viewers cry all on its own. But the real emotional kicker to this evocative episode that finds Bingo traveling the solar system in her dreams is the end, when she sees her mother as the sun.

In Bingo's dream, Chilli tells her youngest daughter, "Remember, I'll always be here for you, even if you can't see me, because I love you."

"Granddad," Season 2, Episode 27

For anyone with aging parents or a close relationship with their grandparents, "Granddad" might just be the ultimate tearjerker. In the episode, Chilli's dad is recovering from surgery, leading her to worry he'll overexert himself when he heads out into the bush to play with Bingo and Bluey. A heart-to-heart talk between dad and daughter combined with a flashback to a young Chilli hugging her father instantly gets the tears flowing.

"Copycat," Season 1, Episode 38

Teaching children about death is never easy, but watching Bluey process the death of a bird she and Bandit rushed to the veterinarian through reenacting the situation provides both kids and parents a blueprint to follow when it comes time to talk about the finality of saying goodbye to a pet or family member. But this episode isn't just one full of teachable moments, it's also both heartbreaking and inspiring in the way it depicts Bluey working through the reality that not every story has a happy ending.

"Baby Race," Season 2, Episode 50

This one's for all the parents out there who tied themselves up in knots worrying about their baby hitting milestones "on time." The majority of "Baby Race" focuses on flashbacks to when Chilli was a new mom fretting over when Bluey would learn to walk, and whether her daughter was behind the other kids, like Judo.

Ultimately, Chilli learns there's no right or wrong time for babies to take their first steps or say their first words — a beautiful message that resonated with plenty of parents who worried about those same issues in real life.

"Camping," Season 1, Episode 43

In "Camping," Bluey meets a boy named Jean-Luc while on vacation with her family. Despite their language barrier, the two become fast friends until his family leaves before the two can say a proper goodbye. Watching Bluey sit next to the blossoming seedling they planted with tears in her eyes is more than enough to make grown adults cry.

"Flat Pack," Season 2, Episode 24

"Flat Pack" is one of those episodes that sneaks up on you like an emotional ninja. What starts as a simple game of pretend involving Bluey and Bingo playing with discarded packing materials evolves into something much deeper as Bingo "grows up" over the course of the game, leaving Bluey behind as she heads off in her pretend spaceship to explore the world.

"Now what do I do?" Bluey asks after hugging Bingo. Her simple question, and her parents call for her to join them on their new swing is a nuanced metaphor for how fleeting childhood is not only for children, but for their parents, as well.
