It has recognized accomplished and talented high school seniors across the country since its establishment in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson.

The program is meant to annually recognize high-achieving students who demonstrate ability and leadership qualities . These scholars will represent the nation's commitment to higher education on behalf of the President.

Candidates are evaluated on many qualities that would qualify a student to be deemed the nation's representative of excellence . Such a heavy title comes with very selective standards. The most notable requirements to have are:

The Presidential Scholars Program follows the same timeline every year. Invitations to apply are usually released in January, with the deadline to submit candidacy materials at the end of February. The review committee will look over the applications and confirm the 161 finalists in the months leading up to the conclusion of this program cycle, with recognition events held in June .

There are different pathways you can take if you are aiming for a presidential scholarship. The first pathway is scoring high on the SAT or ACT. This doesn't mean just earning high scores but rather scoring within the top percentile of the entire country!

Although it can be a challenge, this pathway to becoming a scholar has many advantages. Unlike the other methods of evaluation, you're able to take the SAT/ACT as many times as needed until you're satisfied with your scores. There are also more invitations given out based on test scores compared to the art component or CTE component , as you'll read below.

You can also participate or enroll in several recognition organizations that have the jurisdiction to nominate students. Since the program expanded in 1979, any talented senior in high school in the performing arts or visual arts also has a shot at being nominated for the Presidential Scholarship through the YoungArts Program .

Members who are in this national recognition program senior year of high school and meet all of the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program requirements can go on to earn the scholarship.

Eligible students will be further evaluated during National YoungArts Week, where participants are evaluated against standards of excellence from one of 10 different disciplines: Cinematic Arts, Dance, Design, Jazz, Music, Photography, Theater, Visual Arts, Voice, and Writing.

If you plan on going into technical education, then there's another way of becoming a scholar. In 2015, the program expanded again to include high school students who demonstrate ability and skills in career and technical education fields. These students are personally nominated by their Chief State School Officer (CSSO) based on achievement in CTE .

An independent review committee of educators from across the nation is gathered by the White House to evaluate the final candidates. This committee, called the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars , determines the official scholars of the year after much deliberation.

In every component listed, potential candidates will be measured based on standards of excellence rather than competing with each other for nominations. To get a presidential scholarship, students must focus on academic achievement, community involvement, and going above and beyond.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program does not have open applications . Applications are by nomination only , so students must be invited to apply and cannot apply individually. Furthermore, an exclusive invitation to apply is only given to the best of the best in the nation, so even being nominated to apply is a great achievement.

To even be invited to apply, candidates must meet the following criteria: they must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents of the United States, current high school seniors at the time of the application process, and participate in one of the eligible components.

Students can be invited to apply through three paths of accomplishment :

• General Component - Score within the top percentiles for the SAT or ACT nationally.
• CTE (Career and Technical Education) Component - Be nominated by your Chief State School Officer (CSSO).
• Arts Component - Be nominated by the review committee or a partner organization, such as the YoungArts Program.

Upon being nominated by qualified individuals, invitations are mailed to the selected students with a unique nomination ID number that grants access to an online portal to submit candidacy materials. These materials can include essays, self-assessments, secondary school reports, and official transcripts.

Unlike other scholarship programs, a Presidential Scholarship through the Presidential Scholars Program does not have any monetary value . Rather, it provides scholars with invaluable experiences and opportunities that other students don't have access to.

The vigorous application process ends with an exclusive, all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C. in June to visit the white house, where each selected scholar is presented with a Presidential Scholars medallion to honor their academic achievement. Scholars will also visit historical monuments and attend recitals, events, and ceremonies during their once-in-a-lifetime stay.

During the all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C., scholars have the chance to meet national figures such as renowned authors, scientists, educators, musicians, and government officials. Scholars can discuss social and global issues with like-minded people.

These events can be a catalyst for something greater. There are endless opportunities to network among accomplished peers and to create lasting connections for a long-term career .

While the Presidential Scholars Program does not recognize students through awarded scholarship money, it can definitely help in earning other forms of financial aid . The academic acclaim alone is sure to stand out on any merit-based scholarship you apply for. Scholars can go on to earn an undergraduate degree with connections already set up for what comes after college.

How rare is a presidential scholarship?

An average of 3.7 million students were in the graduating class of 2018-19, and the following years have mostly remained consistent in this number. In comparison, the committee selects up to just 161 U.S Presidential Scholars each year . For over 58 years of prestige, this federal program has selected just over 8,000 U.S. Presidential Scholars in total.

The Presidential Scholarship Program upholds its place as the nation's highest honor for high school students . It is clear in the grand scheme of things that being invited to apply for a presidential scholarship is very rare, let alone becoming a finalist.

What SAT score is required for a presidential scholarship?

A high SAT or ACT score is one of the basic candidacy requirements to become a presidential scholar. The general component focuses on students who score in the top percentiles in the nation for the reading & writing and math sections of the SAT/ACT.

There is no set minimum score required. The committee simply chooses the top 20 male examinees and the top 20 female examinees as the candidates in each state .

Therefore, the test scores required for a Presidential Scholarship solely depend on how your test scores compare to those of your state's graduating high school seniors of that year.

However, these test scores are the deciding factor in becoming a presidential scholar. Candidates should aim for a nearly perfect score of 1600 on the SAT or a 36 on the ACT . If you are not satisfied with your current highest score, you can always retake the SAT/ACT to aim even higher.

How many people apply to be presidential scholars?

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program does not have open applications. Applications are by nomination only, so students must be invited to apply.

For the general component, each Chief State School Officer (CSSO) may nominate ten male and ten female candidates who meet the U.S. Presidential Scholars candidacy requirements.

This tops off the general program at approximately 4,000 candidates . Candidacy is based on the outstanding scholarship of students residing in the CSSO's jurisdiction.

Members of the YoungArts Program who are high school seniors and meet all of the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program requirements can be one of 60 candidates nominated by YoungArts to become Presidential Scholars in the Arts . Other partner organizations can each nominate up to 40 candidates from their individual programs.

In the career and technical education fields component, each CSSO can nominate up to five candidates . The committee dwindles this total down to 60 semifinalists for the final round of evaluations.

Presidential Scholars are selected annually by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars. The rigorous selection process chooses 121 Presidential Scholars from the general component , while 20 selected students from the art component and 20 selected students from the CTE component each make it to the final selection, respectively. In total, this adds up to 161 annual scholars.

PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Villanova's Presidential Scholars Program is a premier full scholarship program inspired by St. Augustine—who pursued truth ( veritas ) through faith, taught leadership through love ( caritas ), and sought change through community ( unitas ).

The program's goal is to recruit, train and support transformational leaders to follow St. Augustine’s example and to build upon the positive work of the Presidential Scholars who came before them. 

The nomination form for the Fall 2024 entering class is now CLOSED. Nominations WERE due by 11:59 PM (EST) on December 1, 2023.

SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS

The Presidential Scholarship is a renewable, merit-based award covering undergraduate Villanova University tuition (fall and spring semesters), on-campus housing, a meal plan that includes up to 21 meals per week, the general fee, and the cost of textbooks to the completion of one undergraduate degree or up to eight semesters, whichever comes first. Twenty-five Presidential Scholarships are offered annually.

Saint Louis University is a pretty selective college, so it’s important to write strong essays to help your application stand out. In this post, we’ll share an essay a real student has submitted to this school for their Presidential Scholarship. (Names and identifying information have been changed, but all other details are preserved).

The Presidential Scholarship is awarded to students who live Saint Louis University’s mission of being servant leaders and men and women for others along with demonstrating strong leadership and interpersonal skills. What does it mean to you to be a leader? Give a detailed example of how you have positively influenced others through leadership and explain how you would continue the University’s mission as a student. (500 words)

“Do you live in a house?” It seemed like a silly question- of course I live in a house! And that’s what I told the quiet four-year-old. I didn’t realize how insensitive my answer was until it was too late. His bright red mop of hair peeked over the collar of the donated North Face jacket as he explained, “Yeah, you look like you live in a house.” Every Tuesday for several weeks, I had been supervising the group of thirteen kids, entertaining them with paper snowflakes, Pictionary, and Kidz Bop karaoke. Aside from the second-hand shoes and canned food diets, there wasn’t that much of a superficial difference between these kids and my younger self. However, they had endured trauma, poverty, and more hardship than any child should. Most of them had been previously homeless- I was supervising them because their parents were either working night shifts or taking mandatory GED classes. All the kids lived in an apartment building of a strict 3-month transitional housing program. Sometimes wisdom is manifested by the smallest of voices. 

On the basketball court, in the classroom, and in positions of responsibility, I’ve developed my identity as a teammate, classmate, and leader. Hearing that I “look like [I] live in a house” fundamentally altered my perspective. Many of the leadership positions I have held have been afforded through my Catholic private high school. It’s easy to be proud of accomplishments until you realize how relatively insignificant they are to others. Singing the national anthem at the Royals game doesn’t matter to kids who don’t have a TV. Earning a state medal in track is meaningless to people who can’t safely go for a run in their neighborhood. Getting promoted from lifeguard to assistant manager doesn’t feel as great when you realize you make a higher wage in your summer job than a single mother of four makes full-time. These experiences have been foundational to my development as a leader, but they cannot (and will not) be the final result. Leaders who improve their communities do so because they make things happen. They identify problems and work for solutions. In response to the civil unrest and injustice of 2020, I founded a school club called Christian Advocates for Social Equality and Justice (C.A.S.E. for Justice) that coincidentally parallels the environment of service-oriented student involvement that initially attracted me to SLU.  As I walked past signs on campus advocating for racial equality, noticed flyers for a fundraiser to support women’s education in third-world countries, and talked with students in the Micah program, it became clear that SLU emphasizes the dignity of the human person and shares my desire to serve the marginalized. 

To whom much is given, much is expected. I’ve been given a house to live in, but- most importantly- I’ve been instilled with lifelong values of service and social justice through my Catholic education and upbringing by Jesuit-educated parents. Pursuing a career in pediatric medicine, I intend to incorporate these values. A scholar strives to know the Gospel. A leader strives to live it. 

What the Essay Did Well

Overall, this is a strong essay for a variety of reasons. Its strong hook: “‘Do you live in a house?’” draws readers in, making a person want to read on and learn who is asking this unusual question and why!

Secondly, there’s a smooth transition from the hook to the rest of the essay, a pattern which continues throughout. There are no abrupt topic changes making this an easy, smooth read. The writer shifts smoothly from one idea to the next, all while staying true to their original message and the essay prompt.

This piece is detail-rich and specific . Small info bits like “ paper snowflakes, Pictionary, and Kidz Bop karaoke” bring the story’s imagery to life and add a layer of realism. Notice how the author makes sure to name the specific organizations he is involved with and/or interested in, avoiding boring and vague generalities. This is especially crucial when you’re trying to prove to adcoms that you belong at their school

This essay toes an interesting line. Admissions experts will frequently gripe about the infamous “I’m so lucky” college essay trope, in which students talk about how interacting with an underprivileged group helped them realize how privileged they are. If the student writes this sort of essay without sufficient elaboration, it can sound like a basic and ineffectual acknowledgement of luck that doesn’t teach the officers anything new about the student. However, this student did a marvelous job of tying their experience into an exploration of their personality and values. The fact that they had concrete experiences with helping underserved communities added a second layer of legitimacy.

What Could be Improved

However, no piece is perfect, and there are always areas for improvement. As you can see, the student made an effort to include a few “words of wisdom” throughout the essay to showcase their perspective on the world. When including general sayings like “To whom much is given, much is expected” and “A leader strives to live [the Gospel],” make sure that they make perfect sense within their respective contexts. This writer did a pretty good job of this overall, but the sentence “Sometimes wisdom is manifested by the smallest of voices” is placed a little abruptly in the essay, right after a detailed elaboration of the children’s living situation. It would have been better placed after an acknowledgment or evidence of a child’s said wisdom to avoid seeming out of place.

Application Information

The president’s scholarship will cover tuition and fees for eight (8) consecutive fall and spring academic semesters or graduation, whichever comes first..

If a student takes graduate level courses through the Four plus One (4+1) program at SMU, scholars can request for their President's Scholarship to cover graduate school classes as long as they are within their eight (8) semesters.  Permission must be granted in advance. The President’s Scholarship cannot be extended to a fifth year. General Fees do not include special fees that are included with some course work. The President’s Scholarship does not pay for books, computers, mandatory health insurance, or parking.

To become a President's Scholar candidate, a student must have:  

• A minimum of 20 high school academic units in a challenging curriculum, including AP/IB and honors courses, two years of a single foreign language, and advanced coursework in math and science
• A high school rank in the top 10 percent of the graduating class*
• A demonstrated commitment to engagement in school and/or community activities
• To be considered, students must submit the application, including the President's Scholars Program Application Essay, by January 15th of the senior year. The selection committee will have access to your full application for admission, including letters of recommendation.
• The median student invited to interview in recent years had SAT scores of 1500 (critical reading and math)

Only students invited to interview will be notified. Students invited to interview usually exhibit a high degree of intellectual curiosity while pursuing the most rigorous high school coursework available and possess a record of exceptional school and/or community involvement. The median student invited to interview in recent years earned an academic un-weighted GPA of 4.0 (on a 4.0 scale).

*If the school does not rank students, then the expectation is a strong academic record.

January 15 Priority Deadline You are encouraged to submit your completed application by the November 1 deadline, but you must complete and return your Application for Admission with separate essay requirement by January 15, which is the deadline for priority consideration for most SMU merit scholarships.

February SMU faculty committees select finalists to be interviewed. Finalists will be notified via email. March  All finalists are invited to campus for personal interviews.  Interviews are required for consideration for the President's Scholar award. Interview day for finalists will be the first Friday of March. SMU covers all expenses for meals and lodging during the campus interview process. In addition to meeting SMU President R. Gerald Turner at a reception and banquet, finalists meet with current President's Scholars, President's Scholars alumni, professors who teach in their area of academic interest, and others in the SMU community.

Recipients of President's Scholar awards are notified during the last week of March.  

To be considered, students must submit the application form, including the President's Scholars Program Application Essay (topic below), by January 15th of the senior year. The selection committee will have access to your full application for admission, including letters of recommendation. Admitted students who have fulfilled these requirements are automatically reviewed, and finalists will be invited to interview on campus on Thursday, February 29th and Friday, March 1, 2024. This interview experience will also include a comprehensive campus visit. Those students will be notified by email approximately one month prior to their interview date. Students who do not qualify for an interview will also be notified by email at that time. President's Scholars Program Essay In your essay of no more than three (3) double-spaced pages, please address all of the following topic. Essays must be submitted either as PDFs or Word Documents. Specifically considering the academic and institutional resources available on campus, how would you approach your four years on the Hilltop should you be selected to be a President’s Scholar. How would your commitments and activities advance the goals of the program?

Undergraduate Scholarships

Saint Louis University offers undergraduate scholarships that recognize, among other areas, academic accomplishment, service involvement and leadership capability. Depending on your major, there may be additional scholarship opportunities offered by your program or department.

Scholarships are awarded at the beginning of your first term and are generally automatically renewed each year, provided you maintain the required GPA and have not exceeded the maximum number of terms offered.  Unless otherwise noted, scholarships are designated for fall/spring terms only and are not available for summer. With our financial aid extension, all undergraduate merit-based scholarships at SLU are renewable for up to 10 semesters. Please note, SLU's medical and law schools, along with the fifth year of SLU's physical therapy and occupational therapy programs, are graduate level and not included in the financial aid extension .

Applying for Scholarships

At SLU, we urge all prospective students to complete their online applications for freshman admission by Dec. 1. By doing so, you are automatically considered for SLU’s merit-based scholarships. No separate application is required.

If we receive your application after Dec. 1, you will be given scholarship consideration based on the availability of funds. Separate applications are still needed for competitive awards, such as the Presidential and Martin Luther King Jr. scholarships.

Merit-based Scholarships

The Billiken, Ignatian, University, and Vice Presidents’ scholarships are awarded to incoming freshmen based on your previous academic performance.

These scholarships automatically renew based upon full-time enrollment over 10 consecutive semesters and maintenance of the required 2.0 GPA.

Application Instructions

Complete and submit SLU’s online application for freshman admission and all required materials by Dec. 1.

• An overall Gaokao score placing the student above the undergraduate enrollment threshold
• A score of 125/150 for English
• Directly admissible to the program of study

Competitive Scholarships

Saint Louis University’s Presidential Scholarship is a four-year award for exemplary student leaders. This competitive award covers the full cost of tuition for 10 consecutive full-time (up to 18 credit hours) fall and spring semesters.

The Presidential Scholarship is awarded to students who live Saint Louis University’s mission of being servant leaders and men and women for others along with demonstrating strong leadership and interpersonal skills. SLU’s Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship is an academic award offered to students who have demonstrated leadership as agents of change or influence within their school and/or community activities.

King Scholars champion the ideals of Dr. King and his legacy of servant leadership, on campus and beyond. If you receive a King Scholarship, you’ll participate in a structured program designed to deepen your self-awareness, be exposed to multicultural experiences and encouraged to develop as an advocate for positive social change.

Freshman Students

• Cumulative high school GPA of 3.25 or higher, weighted or unweighted, as reported on your transcript at the end of your junior year. Transcripts will be accepted through the first semester of your senior year. ACT/SAT test scores are not required.

Transfer Students

• Completion of at least 24 credit hours of transferable college coursework by the end of the spring term.
• Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher as calculated by Saint Louis University (This number may not correspond with your GPA as it appears on your transcript.)

These criteria are used only for determining eligibility and do not guarantee you will be selected as a Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship recipient. After reviewing the applications, SLU invites a select group of students to our St. Louis campus each March to interview for a Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship.

Jesuit Transfer Scholarships are awarded to incoming transfer students based on their cumulative GPA in previous college coursework. The scholarships are renewable over a maximum of 10 semesters.

Award Amount: $14,000-22,000 Complete and submit SLU’s online application for transfer admission and all required materials (transcripts, etc.). ACT/SAT scores are not required.

The A+ Scholarship is available to transfer students who were designated as A+ eligible with their high school and attending an A+ participating community college in Missouri.

Award Amount: $3,000 per year

• Can be combined with other merit-based University scholarships; renewable over a maximum of 10 semesters.

The Community College Scholarship award is available to transfer students who are currently attending or most recently attended a community college.

Award Amount: $2,000 per year

Phi Theta Kappa awards more than $37 million in transfer scholarships each year at institutions across the country, including SLU.

Eligibility Requirements 

• 3.0 cumulative GPA in previous college coursework
• 60 transferable college credit hours (or an associate degree)
• Confirmation of good standing by Phi Theta Kappa advisor in a letter to the Office of Admission

Award Amount: $1,000 per year

The John Paul Fechter Service Scholarship recognizes new transfer students who have demonstrated significant dedication to community service.

• Students must be in good academic standing and accepted into Saint Louis University
• 30 transferable college credit hours
• Demonstration of significant involvement in community service

Award Amount: $10,000 per year

• Renewable over a maximum of 10 semesters with completion of 40 hours of community service per semester
• Complete and submit SLU’s online application for admission and all required materials (transcripts, etc.) by June 1.
• Complete and submit the separate John Paul Fechter Service Scholarship application and all required materials by June 1.

Transfer students who will have completed fewer than 24 semester hours of college credit at the time they enroll at SLU (not including college credit earned during high school) may, at the discretion of the University, also be given consideration for one of the freshman merit-based scholarships.

Other Scholarships

This scholarship is awarded to support the retention current SLU students from underrepresented backgrounds.

• Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
• Minimum of 30 earned SLU credit hours at time of application
• Demonstrated financial need
• Membership in a racial or ethnic minority group that is underrepresented in relation to the University’s goal to achieve educational benefits of a diverse student body
• Preference to students from the greater St. Louis or metropolitan area

Award Amount:  Two $10,000 scholarships will be awarded per year

• Scholarships are not automatically renewed,  but recipients may apply each year.

The Jesuit High School Award recognizes students from Jesuit high schools for their continued commitment to Jesuit education.

• Automatically awarded to freshman applicants from a Jesuit high school

Award Amount: $5,000 per year

• Renewable over 10 consecutive semesters to students who maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA.
• Can be combined with other merit-based scholarships.
• Jesuit High School Award and Catholic High School Award are mutually exclusive. Students are not eligible to receive both.

The Catholic High School Award recognizes students from Catholic high schools for their continued commitment to Catholic education.

SLU's Boys Hope Girls Hope Scholarship is an academic award for Boys Hope Girls Hope scholars who demonstrate financial need. This scholarship supports motivated young people in need to become well-educated, career-ready men and women for others.

• Letter of recommendation from Boys Hope Girls Hope Organization
• Complete and submit the online application for freshman admission and send in all transcripts by Feb. 1.
• Complete and submit the Boys Hope Girls Hope application by Feb. 1.

The Access Academies Scholarship provides a scholarship to any full time undergraduate student with financial need who has graduated from an ACCESS Academies School. Access partners with three middle schools and 26 private high schools, and it serves over 500 students across the St. Louis metropolitan area.

• Graduate of an Access Academies School
• Letter of recommendation from an Access Academies program
• Complete and submit the Access Academies application by Feb. 1.
• Submit one letter of recommendation by Feb. 1. This letter will be uploaded through the Billiken Gateway portal by adding your Access Academies contact email address.

Undergraduate siblings who are enrolled full-time at SLU are each eligible for the Family Award.

• Multiple siblings enrolled at SLU as full-time undergraduate students
• The Family Award can be combined with other scholarships or grants, but not with full-tuition scholarships, such as Presidential Scholarships or tuition remission.
• Renewable as long as multiple siblings remain full-time undergraduate students and each student maintains at least a 2.0 GPA.
• Families are required to complete and submit the Family Award application each year.

This scholarship is awarded to an incoming student from an urban setting who is committed to community service. Only one award is expected to be granted every four years. The selection and renewal decisions will be completed by committee.​

• Verifiable record of community service and demonstrated financial need

Award Amount: Approximately $5,000 per year

• Renewable over a maximum of four semesters so long as you maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and complete 40 hours of community service per academic year in North St. Louis City and selected surrounding communities

Advanced students can even complete both their undergraduate and master’s degrees in 154 credit hours through the 5-Year Program . Homeschool students can make a seamless transition into their undergraduate studies and beyond through TBC's programs.

Over seventy-five percent of applicants receive financial aid , and more than eighty percent of TBC students graduate debt-free . We provide scholarships, financial aid, and financial counseling to students. Homeschool students can expect to receive ample support as they navigate the financial aspects of college life.
