What Makes A Good Research Question

Are you a high school student considering independent research? If so, there’s one challenge that you, along with other students pursuing a research journey, should be expected to face - choosing a research question .

The answers you get are as good as the questions you ask, and research is no different. If you continue in research, you’ll face this question many more times with varying degrees of difficulty . It’s not a bad idea (understatement) to try your hand at developing and answering a good research question.

Not only does a solid research question demonstrate motivation and a strong skill set in the subject of your choice, but also helps you make a stronger impact when you are mentioning research in your college application , as opposed to a half-baked research question that is conducted just for the sake of it.

In this blog, we’ll think through the entire lifecycle of a research question. A few aspects we will cover include -

Why do research in high school?

The research formula

Talking about research questions is never complete without discussing why doing research is important in high school.

The very first thing you should consider is what value doing research will add to your profile and the field you are pursuing research. Yes, it solves a problem statement, but it does much more than that. Research helps you plan and think through solutions. The plan and the execution of that plan are equally important. It helps you understand how to ‘project manage’, collaborate, be methodical, communicate and analyze. No matter what you end up doing, these are important skill sets to have.

To add to this, through research, you can delve into your fields of interest and gain exposure to different areas within your subject interest.

Engaging in research allows you to familiarize yourself with a professional environment and develop high-level research skills. Moreover, working with experts and interacting with peers can allow you to gain valuable connections that might contribute to stellar letters of recommendation.

Research is also extremely valuable for college applications! UPenn reported that 1/3rd of the Class of 2026 have engaged in some form of research during high school. Doing a research project shows your passion as you have taken the initiative to pursue your interested subject outside of school!

If you choose to do research in your desired field, you signal to admission officers that you’ve engaged with the subject you wish to pursue. This intellectual curiosity and determination will set you apart from the rest of the applications as admission officers look for students who push themselves out of their comfort zones.

Tip: Admission officers value your contribution and involvement in your project more than the number of projects you have done. Your main focus should be describing your research experience well in your application! This includes being succinct and describing your research well. Use metrics to give short, clear sentences on your reason, the reason why you did it, and its impact on the real world.

What makes a good research question?

Before you start creating your research question, you should know the features of a good research question. You can use these 5 pointers as guidelines to ensure your research question will be good:

Clarity and specificity - Your question should be clear, concise, and specific. This will make it easier to choose the appropriate methodology and collect relevant data. Vague questions will also make it difficult for you to answer the question effectively!

Relevance - When choosing a question, you should make it relevant to your field of interest. Moreover, your research should not reiterate research that has already been conducted.

Feasibility - As a high-schooler, chances are you will have to stick to a tight time frame to conduct your research. Therefore, you should be able to gather data, collate your findings, and present your research within the given time. Choosing a topic that is too large for the time frame can lead to incomplete research, which makes it less valuable.

Measurability - Your question should allow you to measure the final success and outcomes of the research you have conducted. Questions that are too abstract can make it challenging to conduct research and draw meaningful conclusions.

Originality and potential for contribution - Continuing from relevance, a good research question should allow you to contribute to the existing research conducted. You should aim to fill a gap, challenge assumptions, or offer a fresh perspective! This will lead to your research being significant and valuable.

How to choose your research question?

1. combining your academic interests with your passions and hobbies.

When choosing a research question, start with subjects or areas you find interesting. Then, you could combine these interests with your passions and hobbies ! For example, you can connect cricket with business to explore what factors contribute to a player’s worth during NBA auctions.

Combining your hobbies with your academic interests makes your research engaging and reflects your dedication and enthusiasm as you pursue these passions at a deeper level. Admission officers value this as it shows your commitment toward your interests and academics. Moreover, it makes your research more enjoyable as you are studying a topic you are interested in!

2. Think of the 5Ws!

Addressing who, what, when, where and why questions can help you narrow down on a topic! Here’s a breakdown of what you should consider for each question:

WHO - Who are the main publishers of information in this field? Who is primarily affected by this information or topic? Are there any organizations or institutions that are specifically affiliated with this topic?

WHAT - What are the major questions for this topic? Are there any debates about this topic? If yes, what are the different viewpoints for this debate?

WHEN - When was your topic applicable/important? Is it a current, pressing issue or are you discussing a historical issue? Are you looking at a single time period or comparing your topics by different time periods?

WHERE - Where is your topic important - at a local, national, or international level? You have to specify the areas that your research is relevant to.

WHY - Why did you choose the topic? What interests you about it and do you have any opinion in any area within this topic?

3. Does your research further your project/ internship experience?

Another way of approaching research is to have your research contribute to other project experiences you have done . For example, if you have volunteered at a non-profit focused on providing access to clean water in rural areas, your research paper could be centered around clean water access!

Additionally, you can couple your research with internship programs. You can consider Ladder Internships . Ladder Internships is a selective program for high school students to work with startups.

As part of their internship, each student will work on a real-world project and present their work at the end of their internship. Note that as a Ladder Intern, you will engage in a coaching+work-based model - a component that sets it apart from most internships!

If you create a project for your internship, you can continue your real-world project by conducting research on a similar topic. For example, if you have created a marketing campaign for your internship, you could conduct research on what factors make a marketing campaign successful! This also gives cohesion to your college application.

By combining your previous experience with research, you show your commitment to a subject. This continuity is valued by admission officers as it shows your dedication and growth towards the subject over time, which signals that you delve deep into topics that interest you.

An added bonus is that you can showcase the theoretical and practical knowledge you have gained through your experiences!

4. Is the topic connected to the subject you intended to pursue at university?

If you intend to pursue a specific subject in university, choosing a research topic in this subject shows your proactiveness in exploring this subject! For instance, if you wish to pursue biology, you could explore the genetic basis of certain inherited traits for a local animal population.

While this can help you explore your interests within the subject you intend to pursue, it also shows cohesiveness between your experiences and field of interest. Additionally, it shows that you are actively preparing for the challenge in university through your exploration of more advanced knowledge.

5. Can you choose a topic that combines your knowledge of 2 subjects?

Choosing an interdisciplinary topic shows your versatility and is a great way to pursue research if you have yet to decide on a subject you wish to pursue in university ! For example, if you are interested in psychology and computer science, you could explore how digital distractions such as smartphone notifications affect cognitive tasks.

By choosing an interdisciplinary subject, you signal to college admission officers that you have a broader perspective and better problem-solving skills as you can approach a problem from multiple disciplines, which results in more innovative solutions!

Additionally, choosing an interdisciplinary topic allows you to explore emerging fields, e.g. environmental economics. This shows how you can use the foundational knowledge you have learnt in school and apply this to discoveries in newer fields.

6. Use tools likeChatGPT to brainstorm but be VERY careful!

ChatGPT is a pretty valuable tool for getting general information quickly, and you can use it to brainstorm research questions. But long story short, we would definitely recommend that you use it tactfully beyond that.

To begin, ChatGPT can be used to explore potential research areas and emerging topics in your field of interest. For example, if you are interested in economics, ChatGPT can give you current issues to explore further!

Moreover, you can use platforms such as ChatGPT to get feedback to refine your research questions . It can help you clarify ideas, identify potential gaps in your questions, and offer suggestions for improving your questions. This will depend on how well you refine your prompt and you will notice that ChatGPT answers are directionally right but quite wrong on the specifics.

Additionally, ChatGPT is useful for identifying other angles that you might not have considered. For instance, if you are interested in analyzing social media and its contributions to feminist discourse, ChatGPT can suggest related fields such as its impact on mental health, digital activism, and more!

We’d highly recommend you use Google Scholar to get an overview of the type of work being done in your area(s) of interest.

How do you go about doing research in high school?

Once you have a good research question, it’s all about the execution. This section is useful, even if you don’t have the research question. This is a general approach towards accessing research opportunities in high school.

1. Identify and apply research opportunities strategically: Some options are recurring programs. Usually, these are advertised. These can be structured research programs or internships run by universities, non-profits, or government departments.

If you already have a research question in mind, think through which programs are appropriate for those subject areas. These programs are often in the form of research opportunities or coursework-oriented pre-college programs. We’ve built out a bunch of subject-specific lists for you.

2. Opt for a research mentorship program: Research mentorship programs allow you to experience the entire research cycle with the guidance of an experienced mentor. 3. Make the best of networking opportunities at summer programs or pre-college research programs: Structured programs such as the Lumiere Research Scholar Program or Veritas AI allow you to gain experience under researchers from top universities. You should take advantage of your admission into these programs and connect with your mentors or professors outside of the program! You can always approach these individuals for more research opportunities.

What else can you do apart from research?

To create a well-rounded application, you will have to show other experiences apart from research. Here are a few other ideas for extracurriculars!

Competitions - Competitions are a great way to build competence and gain exposure. This exposure often translates to being able to think through research questions. For example, if you are interested in subjects like computer science, AI, or robotics, coding competitions are an opportunity for you to apply your theoretical knowledge in practical situations. The Congressional App Challenge is a great example of a competition that is quite likely to lead to a larger research project because you'll spend a lot of time identifying a problem in society and building an app to solve it. Model United Nations - If you wish to pursue political science, law, or international relations, you should consider participating in MUNs as they allow you to develop speaking, negotiation, and diplomacy skills! Participating in prestigious MUNs is extremely valuable as it not only shows your ability to conduct research but also highlights your soft skills such as persuasive speaking.

Olympiads - Regardless of which subject you are interested in, Olympiads are a great opportunity to show your academic ability. Internships - Internships allow you to show your ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practical situations! Moreover, as we’ve mentioned before - coupling your internship experience with research adds to the cohesiveness of your entire application.

So, you've got a research grant in your sights or you've been admitted to your school of choice, and you now have to write up a proposal for the work you want to perform. You know your topic, have done some reading, and you've got a nice quiet place where nobody will bother you while you try to decide where you'll go from here. The question looms:     

What Is a Research Question?

Your research question will be your focus, the sentence you refer to when you need to remember why you're researching. It will encapsulate what drives you and be something your field needs an answer for but doesn't have yet. 

Whether it seeks to describe a phenomenon, compare things, or show how one variable influences another, a research question always does the same thing: it guides research that will be judged based on how well it addresses the question.

So, what makes a research question good or bad? This article will provide examples of good and bad research questions and use them to illustrate both of their common characteristics so that you can evaluate your research question and improve it to suit your needs.

How to Choose a Research Question

At the start of your research paper, you might be wondering, "What is a good research question?"

A good research question focuses on one researchable problem relevant to your subject area.

To write a research paper , first make sure you have a strong, relevant topic. Then, conduct some preliminary research around that topic. It's important to complete these two initial steps because your research question will be formulated based on this research.

With this in mind, let's review the steps that help us write good research questions.

1. Select a Relevant Topic

When selecting a topic to form a good research question, it helps to start broad. What topics interest you most? It helps when you care about the topic you're researching!

Have you seen a movie recently that you enjoyed? How about a news story? If you can't think of anything, research different topics on Google to see which ones intrigue you the most and can apply to your assignment.

Also, before settling on a research topic, make sure it's relevant to your subject area or to society as a whole. This is an important aspect of developing your research question, because, in general, your research should add value to existing knowledge .

2. Thoroughly Research the Topic

Now that you've chosen a broad but relevant topic for your paper, research it thoroughly to see which avenues you might want to explore further.

For example, let's say you decide on the broad topic of search engines. During this research phase, try skimming through sources that are unbiased, current, and relevant, such as academic journals or sources in your university library.

Pay close attention to the subtopics that come up during research, such as the following: Which search engines are the most commonly used? Why do some search engines dominate specific regions? How do they really work or affect the research of scientists and scholars?

Be on the lookout for any gaps or limitations in the research. Identifying the groups or demographics that are most affected by your topic is also helpful, in case that's relevant to your work.

3. Narrow Your Topic to a Single Point

Now that you've spent some time researching your broad topic, it's time to narrow it down to one specific subject. A topic like search engines is much too broad to develop a research paper around. What specifically about search engines could you explore?

When refining your topic, be careful not to be either too narrow or too broad. You can ask yourself the following questions during this phase:

Can I cover this topic within the scope of my paper, or would it require longer, heavier research? (In this case, you'd need to be more specific.)

Conversely, is there not enough research about my topic to write a paper? (In this case, you'd need to be broader.)

Keep these things in mind as you narrow down your topic. You can always expand your topic later if you have the time and research materials.

4. Identify a Problem Related to Your Topic

When narrowing down your topic, it helps to identify a single issue or problem on which to base your research. Ask open-ended questions, such as why is this topic important to you or others? Essentially, have you identified the answer to "so what"?

For example, after asking these questions about our search engine topic, we might focus only on the issue of how search engines affect research in a specific field. Or, more specifically, how search engine algorithms manipulate search results and prevent us from finding the critical research we need.

Asking these "so what" questions will help us brainstorm examples of research questions we can ask in our field of study.

5. Turn Your Problem into a Question

Now that you have your main issue or problem, it's time to write your research question. Do this by reviewing your topic's big problem and formulating a question that your research will answer.

For example, ask, "so what?" about your search engine topic. You might realize that the bigger issue is that you, as a researcher, aren't getting the relevant information you need from search engines.

How can we use this information to develop a research question? We might phrase the research question as follows:

"What effect does the Google search engine algorithm have on online research conducted in the field of neuroscience?"

Note how specific we were with the type of search engine, the field of study, and the research method. It's also important to remember that your research question should not have an easy yes or no answer. It should be a question with a complex answer that can be discovered through research and analysis.

Perfect Your Paper

It can be fun to browse a myriad of research topics for your paper, but there are a few important things to keep in mind.

First, make sure you've understood your assignment. You don't want to pick a topic that's not relevant to the assignment goal. Your instructor can offer good topic suggestions as well, so if you get stuck, ask them!

Next, try to search for a broad topic that interests you. Starting broad gives you more options to work with. Some research topic examples include infectious diseases, European history, and smartphones .

Then, after some research, narrow your topic to something specific by extracting a single element from that subject. This could be a current issue on that topic, a major question circulating around that topic, or a specific region or group of people affected by that topic.

It's important that your research topic is focused. Focus lets you clearly demonstrate your understanding of the topic with enough details and examples to fit the scope of your project.

For example, if Jane Austen is your research topic, that might be too broad for a five-page paper! However, you could narrow it down to a single book by Austen or a specific perspective.

To keep your research topic focused, try creating a mind map. This is where you put your broad topic in a circle and create a few circles around it with similar ideas that you uncovered during your research. 

Mind maps can help you visualize the connections between topics and subtopics. This could help you simplify the process of eliminating broad or uninteresting topics or help you identify new relationships between topics that you didn't previously notice. 

Keeping your research topic focused will help you when it comes to writing your research question!

2. Researchable

A researchable question should have enough available sources to fill the scope of your project without being overwhelming. If you find that the research is never-ending, you're going to be very disappointed at the end of your paper—because you won't be able to fit everything in! If you are in this fix, your research question is still too broad.

Search for your research topic's keywords in trusted sources such as journals, research databases , or dissertations in your university library. Then, assess whether the research you're finding is feasible and realistic to use.

If there's too much material out there, narrow down your topic by industry, region, or demographic. Conversely, if you don't find enough research on your topic, you'll need to go broader. Try choosing two works by two different authors instead of one, or try choosing three poems by a single author instead of one.

3. Reasonable

Make sure that the topic for your research question is a reasonable one to pursue. This means it's something that can be completed within your timeframe and offers a new perspective on the research.

Research topics often end up being summaries of a topic, but that's not the goal. You're looking for a way to add something relevant and new to the topic you're exploring. To do so, here are two ways to uncover strong, reasonable research topics as you conduct your preliminary research:

Check the ends of journal articles for sections with questions for further discussion. These make great research topics because they haven't been explored!

Check the sources of articles in your research. What points are they bringing up? Is there anything new worth exploring? Sometimes, you can use sources to expand your research and more effectively narrow your topic.

4. Specific

For your research topic to stand on its own, it should be specific. This means that it shouldn't be easily mistaken for another topic that's already been written about.

If you are writing about a topic that has been written about, such as consumer trust, it should be distinct from everything that's been written about consumer trust so far.

There is already a lot of research done on consumer trust in specific products or services in the US. Your research topic could focus on consumer trust in products and services in a different region, such as a developing country.

If your research feels similar to existing articles, make sure to drive home the differences.

Whether it's developed for a thesis or another assignment, a good research topic question should be complex enough to let you expand on it within the scope of your paper.

For example, let's say you took our advice on researching a topic you were interested in, and that topic was a new Bridezilla reality show. But when you began to research it, you couldn't find enough information on it, or worse, you couldn't find anything scholarly.

In short, Bridezilla reality shows aren't complex enough to build your paper on. Instead of broadening the topic to all reality TV shows, which might be too overwhelming, you might consider choosing a topic about wedding reality TV shows specifically.

This would open you up to more research that could be complex enough to write a paper on without being too overwhelming or narrow.

6. Relevant

Because research papers aim to contribute to existing research that's already been explored, the relevance of your topic within your subject area can't be understated.

Your research topic should be relevant enough to advance understanding in a specific area of study and build on what's already been researched. It shouldn't duplicate research or try to add to it in an irrelevant way.

For example, you wouldn't choose a research topic like malaria transmission in Northern Siberia if the mosquito that transmits malaria lives in Africa. This research topic simply isn't relevant to the typical location where malaria is transmitted, and the research could be considered a waste of resources.

Do Research Questions Differ between the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Hard Sciences?

The art and science of asking questions is the source of all knowledge.

First, a bit of clarification: While there are constants among research questions, no matter what you're writing about, you will use different standards for the humanities and social sciences than for hard sciences, such as chemistry. The former depends on subjectivity and the perspective of the researcher, while the latter requires answers that must be empirically tested and replicable.

For instance, if you research Charles Dickens' writing influences, you will have to explain your stance and observations to the reader before supporting them with evidence. If you research improvements in superconductivity in room-temperature material, the reader will not only need to understand and believe you but also duplicate your work to confirm that you are correct.

Do Research Questions Differ between the Different Types of Research?

Research questions help you clarify the path your research will take. They are answered in your research paper and usually stated in the introduction.

There are two main types of research—qualitative and quantitative. 

If you're conducting quantitative research, it means you're collecting numerical, quantifiable data that can be measured, such as statistical information.

Qualitative research aims to understand experiences or phenomena, so you're collecting and analyzing non-numerical data, such as case studies or surveys.

The structure and content of your research question will change depending on the type of research you're doing. However, the definition and goal of a research question remains the same: a specific, relevant, and focused inquiry that your research answers.

Below, we'll explore research question examples for different types of research.

Examples of Good and Bad Research Questions

Comparative Research

Comparative research questions are designed to determine whether two or more groups differ based on a dependent variable. These questions allow researchers to uncover similarities and differences between the groups tested.

Because they compare two groups with a dependent variable, comparative research questions usually start with "What is the difference in…"

A strong comparative research question example might be the following:

"What is the difference in the daily caloric intake of American men and women?" ( Source .)

In the above example, the dependent variable is daily caloric intake and the two groups are American men and women.

A poor comparative research example might not aim to explore the differences between two groups or it could be too easily answered, as in the following example:

"Does daily caloric intake affect American men and women?"

Always ensure that your comparative research question is focused on a comparison between two groups based on a dependent variable.

Descriptive Research

Descriptive research questions help you gather data about measurable variables. Typically, researchers asking descriptive research questions aim to explain how, why, or what.

These research questions tend to start with the following:

What percentage?

How likely?

What proportion?

For example, a good descriptive research question might be as follows:

"What percentage of college students have felt depressed in the last year?" ( Source .)

A poor descriptive research question wouldn't be as precise. This might be something similar to the following:

"What percentage of teenagers felt sad in the last year?"

The above question is too vague, and the data would be overwhelming, given the number of teenagers in the world. Keep in mind that specificity is key when it comes to research questions!

Correlational Research

Correlational research measures the statistical relationship between two variables, with no influence from any other variable. The idea is to observe the way these variables interact with one another. If one changes, how is the other affected?

When it comes to writing a correlational research question, remember that it's all about relationships. Your research would encompass the relational effects of one variable on the other.

For example, having an education (variable one) might positively or negatively correlate with the rate of crime (variable two) in a specific city. An example research question for this might be written as follows:

"Is there a significant negative correlation between education level and crime rate in Los Angeles?"

A bad correlational research question might not use relationships at all. In fact, correlational research questions are often confused with causal research questions, which imply cause and effect. For example:

"How does the education level in Los Angeles influence the crime rate?"

The above question wouldn't be a good correlational research question because the relationship between Los Angeles and the crime rate is already inherent in the question—we are already assuming the education level in Los Angeles affects the crime rate in some way.

Be sure to use the right format if you're writing a correlational research question.

How to Avoid a Bad Question

Ask the right questions, and the answers will always reveal themselves.

If finding the right research question was easy, doing research would be much simpler. However, research does not provide useful information if the questions have easy answers (because the questions are too simple, narrow, or general) or answers that cannot be reached at all (because the questions have no possible answer, are too costly to answer, or are too broad in scope).

For a research question to meet scientific standards, its answer cannot consist solely of opinion (even if the opinion is popular or logically reasoned) and cannot simply be a description of known information.

However, an analysis of what currently exists can be valuable, provided that there is enough information to produce a useful analysis. If a scientific research question offers results that cannot be tested, measured, or duplicated, it is ineffective.

Bad Research Question Examples

Here are examples of bad research questions with brief explanations of what makes them ineffective for the purpose of research.

"What's red and bad for your teeth?"

This question has an easy, definitive answer (a brick), is too vague (What shade of red? How bad?), and isn't productive.

"Do violent video games cause players to act violently?"

This question also requires a definitive answer (yes or no), does not invite critical analysis, and allows opinion to influence or provide the answer.

"How many people were playing balalaikas while living in Moscow on July 8, 2019?"

This question cannot be answered without expending excessive amounts of time, money, and resources. It is also far too specific. Finally, it doesn't seek new insight or information, only a number that has no conceivable purpose.

How to Write a Research Question

The quality of a question is not judged by its complexity but by the complexity of thinking it provokes.

What makes a good research question? A good research question topic is clear and focused. If the reader has to waste time wondering what you mean, you haven't phrased it effectively.

It also needs to be interesting and relevant, encouraging the reader to come along with you as you explain how you reached an answer. 

Finally, once you explain your answer, there should be room for astute or interested readers to use your question as a basis to conduct their own research. If there is nothing for you to say in your conclusion beyond "that's the truth," then you're setting up your research to be challenged.

Good Research Question Examples

Here are some examples of good research questions. Take a look at the reasoning behind their effectiveness.

"What are the long-term effects of using activated charcoal in place of generic toothpaste for routine dental care?"

This question is specific enough to prevent digressions, invites measurable results, and concerns information that is both useful and interesting. Testing could be conducted in a reasonable time frame, without excessive cost, and would allow other researchers to follow up, regardless of the outcome.

"Why do North American parents feel that violent video game content has a negative influence on their children?"

While this does carry an assumption, backing up that assumption with observable proof will allow for analysis of the question, provide insight on a significant subject, and give readers something to build on in future research. 

It also discusses a topic that is recognizably relevant. (In 2022, at least. If you are reading this article in the future, there might already be an answer to this question that requires further analysis or testing!)

"To what extent has Alexey Arkhipovsky's 2013 album, Insomnia , influenced gender identification in Russian culture?"

While it's tightly focused, this question also presents an assumption (that the music influenced gender identification) and seeks to prove or disprove it. This allows for the possibilities that the music had no influence at all or had a demonstrable impact.

Answering the question will involve explaining the context and using many sources so that the reader can follow the logic and be convinced of the author's findings. The results (be they positive or negative) will also open the door to countless other studies.

How to Turn a Bad Research Question into a Good One

If something is wrong, fix it if you can. But train yourself not to worry. Worry never fixes anything.

How do you turn something that won't help your research into something that will? Start by taking a step back and asking what you are expected to produce. While there are any number of fascinating subjects out there, a grant paying you to examine income disparity in Japan is not going to warrant an in-depth discussion of South American farming pollution. 

Use these expectations to frame your initial topic and the subject that your research should be about, and then conduct preliminary research into that subject. If you spot a knowledge gap while researching, make a note of it, and add it to your list of possible questions.

If you already have a question that is relevant to your topic but has flaws, identify the issues and see if they can be addressed. In addition, if your question is too broad, try to narrow it down enough to make your research feasible.

Especially in the sciences, if your research question will not produce results that can be replicated, determine how you can change it so a reader can look at what you've done and go about repeating your actions so they can see that you are right.

Moreover, if you would need 20 years to produce results, consider whether there is a way to tighten things up to produce more immediate results. This could justify future research that will eventually reach that lofty goal.

If all else fails, you can use the flawed question as a subtopic and try to find a better question that fits your goals and expectations.

Parting Advice

When you have your early work edited, don't be surprised if you are told that your research question requires revision. Quite often, results or the lack thereof can force a researcher to shift their focus and examine a less significant topic—or a different facet of a known issue—because testing did not produce the expected result. 

If that happens, take heart. You now have the tools to assess your question, find its flaws, and repair them so that you can complete your research with confidence and publish something you know your audience will read with fascination.

Of course, if you receive affirmation that your research question is strong or are polishing your work before submitting it to a publisher, you might just need a final proofread to ensure that your confidence is well placed. Then, you can start pursuing something new that the world does not yet know (but will know) once you have your research question down.

How to define a research question or a design problem

Introduction.

Many texts state that identifying a good research question (or, equivalently, a design problem) is important for research. Wikipedia, for example, starts (as of writing this text, at least) with the following two sentences:

“A research question is ‘a question that a research project sets out to answer’. Choosing a research question is an essential element of both quantitative and qualitative research.” (Wikipedia, 2020)

However, finding a good research question (RQ) can be a painful experience. It may feel impossible to understand what are the criteria for a good RQ, how a good RQ can be found, and to notice when there are problems with some RQ candidate.

In this text, I will address the pains described above. I start by presenting a scenario of a project that has problems with its RQ. The analysis of that scenario allows me then to describe how to turn the situation described in the scenario for a better research or design project.

Scenario of a problematic project

Let us consider a scenario that you are starting a new research or design project. You have already an idea: your work will be related to communication with instant messaging (IM). Because you are a design-minded person, you are planning to design and develop a new IM feature: a possibility to send predefined replies on a mobile IM app. Your idea is that this feature will allow the user to communicate quickly with others in difficult situations where the they can only connect with others through their mobile phone. Your plan is to supply the mobile IM app with messages like “I’m late by 10 minutes but see you soon”, “I can’t answer back now but will do that later today”, and so on.

Therefore, your plan involves designing such an app, maybe first by sketching it and then illustrating its interaction with a prototyping software like Figma or Adobe XD. You may also decide to make your design functional by programming it and letting a selected number of participants to use it. These kinds of activities will let you demonstrate your skills as a designer-researcher.

Although predefined messages for a mobile IM app can be a topic of a great study, there are some problems with this project that require you to think more about it before you start. As the project is currently defined, it is difficult to provide convincing answers to these challenges:

  • Challenge 1: Why would this be a relevant topic for research or design? Good studies address topics that may interest also other people than the author only. The current research topic, however, does not do that self-evidently yet: it lacks an explanation why it would make sense to equip mobile IM apps with predefined replies. There is only a guess that this could be useful in some situations, but this may not convince the reader about the ingenuity of this project.
  • Challenge 2: How do you demonstrate that your solution is particularly good? For an outsider who will see the project’s outcome, it may not be clear why your final design would be the best one among the other possible designs. If you propose one interaction design for such a feature, what makes that a good one? In other words, the project lacks a yardstick by which its quality should be measured.
  • Challenge 3: How does this project lead to learning or new knowledge? Even if you can show that the topic is relevant (point 1) and that the solution works well (2), the solution may feel too “particularized” – not usable in any other design context. This is an important matter in applied research fields like design and human–computer interaction, because these fields require some form of generalizability from their studies. Findings of a study should result in some kind of knowledge, such as skills, sensitivity to important matters, design solutions or patterns, etc. that could be used also at a later time in other projects, preferably by other people too.

All these problems relate to a problem that this study does not have a RQ yet . Identifying a good research question will help clarify all the above matters, as we will see below.

Adding a research question / design problem

RQs are of many kinds, and they are closely tied to the intended finding of the study: what contribution  should the study deliver. A contribution can be, for example, a solution to a problem or creation of novel information or knowledge. Novel information, in turn, can be a new theory, model or hypothesis, analysis that offers deeper understanding, identification of an unattended problem, description about poorly understood phenomenon, a new viewpoint, or many other things.

The researcher or thesis author usually has a lot of freedom in choosing the exact type of contribution that they want to make. This can feel difficult to the author: there may be no-one telling what they should study. In a way, in such a situation, the thesis/article author is the client of their own research: they both define what needs to be done, and then accomplish that work. Some starting points for narrowing down the space of possibilities is offered here.

Most importantly, the RQ needs to be focused on a topic that the author genuinely does not know, and which is important to find out on the path to the intended contribution. In our scenario about a mobile IM app’s predefined replies, there are currently too many alternatives for an intended contribution, and an outsider would not be able to know which one of them to expect:

  • Demonstration that mobile IM apps will be better to use when they have this new feature.
  • Report on the ways by which people would use the new feature, if their mobile IM apps would have such a feature.
  • Requirements analysis for the specific design and detailed features by which the feature should be designed.
  • Analysis of the situations where the feature would be most needed, and user groups who would most often be in such situations.

All of these are valid contributions, and the author can choose to focus on any one of them. This depends also on the author’s personal interests. This gives a possibility for formulating a RQ for the project. It is important to notice that each one of the possible contributions listed above calls for a different corresponding RQ:

RQ1: Do predefined replies in mobile IM apps improve their usability?

RQ2: How will users start using the predefined replies in mobile IM apps?

RQ3: How should the interaction in the IM app be designed, and what kind of predefined replies need to be offered to the users?

RQ4: When are predefined replies in IM apps needed?

This list of four RQs, matched with the four possible contributions, shows why the scenario presented in the beginning of this text was problematic. Only after asking these kinds of questions one is able to seek to answer to the earlier-presented three challenges in the end of the previous section. Also, each of the RQs needs a different research or design method, and its own kind of background research.

The choice and fine-tuning of the research question / design problem

Which one of the above RQs should our hypothetical researcher/designer choose? Lists of basic requisites for good RQs have been presented in many websites. They can help identify RQs that will still need refinement. Monash University offers the following kind of helpful list:

  • Clear and focused.  In other words, the question should clearly state what the writer needs to do.
  • Not too broad and not too narrow.  The question should have an appropriate scope. If the question is too broad it will not be possible to answer it thoroughly within the word limit. If it is too narrow you will not have enough to write about and you will struggle to develop a strong argument.
  • Not too easy to answer.  For example, the question should require more than a simple yes or no answer.
  • Not too difficult to answer.  You must be able to answer the question thoroughly within the given timeframe and word limit.
  • Researchable.  You must have access to a suitable amount of quality research materials, such as academic books and refereed journal articles.
  • Analytical rather than descriptive.  In other words, your research question should allow you to produce an analysis of an issue or problem rather than a simple description of it.

If a study meets the above criteria, it has a good chance of avoiding a problem of presenting a “non-contribution” : A laboriously produced finding that nonetheless does not provide new, interesting information. The points 3 and 6 above particularly guard against such studies: they warn the readers from focusing their efforts on something that is already known (3) and only describing what was done or what observations were made, instead of analysing them in more detail (6).

In fine-tuning a possible RQ, it is important to situate it to the right scope. The first possible RQ that comes to one’s mind is often too broad and needs to be narrowed. RQ4 above (“ When are predefined replies in IM apps most needed? ”), for example, is a very relevant question, but it is probably too broad.

Why is RQ4 too broad? The reason is that RQs are usually considered very literally. If you leave an aspect in your RQ unspecified, then it means that you intend that your RQ and your findings will be generalisable (i.e., applicable) to all the possible contexts and cases that your RQ can be applied to. Consider the following diagram:

With a question “ When are predefined replies in IM apps most needed?”, you are asking a question that covers both leisure-oriented and work-oriented IM apps which can be of very different kinds. Some of the IM apps are mobile-oriented (such as WhatsApp) and others are desktop-oriented (such as Slack or Teams). Unless you specify your RQ more narrowly, your findings should be applicable to all these kinds of apps. Also, RQ4 is unspecific also about the people that you are thinking as communication partners. It may be impossible for you to make a study so broad that it applies to all of these cases.

Therefore, a more manageable-sized scoping could be something like this:

RQ4 (version 2): In which away-from-desktop leisure life situations are predefined replies in IM apps most needed?

Furthermore, you can also narrow down your focus theoretically. In our example scenario, the researcher/designer can decide, for example, that they will consider predefined IM replies from the viewpoint of “face-work” in social interaction. By adopting this viewpoint, the researcher/designer can decide that they will design the IM’s replies with a goal that they help the user to maintain an active, positive image in the eyes of others. When they start designing the reply feature, they can now ask much more specific questions. For example: how could my design help a user in doing face-work in cases where they are in a hurry and can only send a short and blunt message to another person? How could the predefined replies help in situations where the users would not have time to answer but they know they should? Ultimately, would the predefined replies make it easier for users to do face-work in computer-mediated communications (CMC)?

You can therefore further specify RQ4 into this:

RQ4 (version 3): In which away-from-desktop leisure life situations are predefined replies in IM apps most needed when it is important to react quickly to arriving messages?

As you may notice, it is possible to scope the RQ too narrowly so that it starts to be close to absurd. But if that does not become a problem, the choice of methods (i.e., the research design ) becomes much easier to do.

The benefit of theoretically narrowed-down RQs (in this case, building on the concept of face-work in RQ4 version 3) have the benefit that they point you to useful background literature. Non-theoretical RQs (e.g., RQ4 version 2), in contrast, require that you identify the relevant literature more independently, relying on your own judgment. In the present case, you can base your thinking about IM apps’ on sociological research on interpersonal interaction and self-presentation (e.g., Goffman 1967) and its earlier applications to CMC (Nardi et al., 2000; Salovaara et al., 2011). Such a literature provides the starting points for deeper design considerations. Deeper considerations, in turn, increase the contribution of the research, and make it interesting for the readers.

As said, the first RQ that one comes to think of is not necessarily the best and final one. The RQ may need to be adapted (and also can be adapted) over the course of the research. In qualitative research this is very typical, and the same applies to exploratory design projects that proceed through small design experiments (i.e., through their own smaller RQs).

This text promised to address the pains that definition of a RQ or a design problem may pose for a student or a researcher. The main points of the answer may be summarized as follows:

  • The search for a good RQ is a negotiation process between three objectives : what is personally motivating, what is realistically possible to do (e.g., that the work can be built on some earlier literature and there is a method that can answer to the RQ), and what motivates its relevance (i.e., can it lead to interesting findings).
  • The search for a RQ or a design problem is a process and not a task that must be fixed immediately . It is, however, good to get started somewhere, since a RQ gives a lot of focus for future activities: what to read and what methods to choose, for example.

With the presentation of the scenario and its analysis, I sought to demonstrate why and how choosing an additional analytical viewpoint can be a useful strategy. With it, a project whose meaningfulness may be otherwise questionable for an outsider can become interesting when its underpinnings and assumptions are explicated. That helps ensure that the reader will appreciate the work that the author has done with their research.

In the problematization of the scenario, I presented the three challenges related to it. I can now offer possible answers to them, by highlighting why a RQ can serve as a tool for finding them:  

  • Why would this be a relevant topic for research or design? Choice of a RQ often requires some amount of background research that helps the researcher/designer to understand how much about the problem has already been solved by others. This awareness helps shape the RQ to focus on a topic where information is not yet known and more information is needed for a high-quality outcome.
  • How do you demonstrate that your solution is particularly good? By having a question, it is possible to analyse what are the right methods for answering it. The quality of executing these becomes then evaluatable. The focus on a particular question also will permit that the author compromises optimality in other, less central outcomes. For example, if smoothness of interaction is in the focus, then it is easy to explain why long-term robustness and durability of a prototype may not be critical.
  • How does this project lead to learning or new knowledge? Presentation of the results or findings allows the researcher/design to devote their Discussion section (see the IMRaD article format ) to topics that would have been impossible to predict before the study. That will demonstrate that the project has generated novel understanding: it has generated knowledge that can be considered insightful.

If and when the researcher/designer pursues further in design and research, the experience of thinking about RQs and design problems accumulates. As one reads literature , the ability to consider different research questions becomes better too. Similarly, as one carries out projects with different RQs and problems, and notices how adjusting them along the way helps shape one’s work, the experience similarly grows. Eventually, one may even learn to enjoy the analytical process of identifying a good research question.
