P.s. A.A. Milne is one of our favourites - so hereâs one of his famous Winnie The Pooh stories used as our example. Enjoy! Weâve included the link to the rest of the story at the bottom of the page.
You could tell that Christopher Robin had something important to say from the way he clasped his knees tightly and wriggled his toes. Everybody gathered round and looked at him expectantly. âIâve heard that her Majesty ...â Christopher Robin began. âOh,â squeaked Piglet in a state of great excitement.
You could tell that Christopher Robin had something important to say from the way he clasped his knees tightly and wriggled his toes. Everybody gathered round and looked at him expectantly. âIâve heard that her Majesty ...â Christopher Robin began. âOh,â squeaked Piglet in a state of great excitement. âHer Royal Highness ...â he went on. âQuite so, quite so,â agreed Rabbit. âThe Queen of England ...â he said quickly before anyone else could interrupt him. âOh, The Queen,â said Pooh Bear, much relieved. âThe other people you mentioned sounded much too tall and fearsome, but The Queen is quite different.â
Pooh had once sent a letter and was told to stick on a small picture of The Queen. It stuck more to his nose than to the letter, but it told the postman that it was Most Urgent and that The Queen Says It Must Be Sent and so he was sure it had been. âAs I was saying,â said Christopher Robin, passing Pooh a honey sandwich so that he might continue speaking, âHer Majesty The Queen is celebrating an important birthday, her ninetieth birthday. And we should too. Celebrate it, that is, by giving her a present.â
âI had a present once,â sighed Eeyore wistfully. âTwo, in fact, if I may boast a little. One was rather small and damp and the other somewhat larger and sticky. But I donât like to complain. A present is Something and to have two is Something Else.â
Both Pooh and Piglet blushed slightly. They had a memory of a wonderful balloon and a large jar of the best honey that had begun as Exceedingly Good presents and then, due to various mishaps, had
become Rather Disappointing presents, but which were present nevertheless and as Eeyore had said â that was Something.
âThe question is,â said Rabbit importantly, âwhat do Queens like best?â âHoney, I should think,â sighed Pooh, looking at the small, sticky crumb where the honey sandwiches had once been. âIâve heard,â said Christopher Robin, who knew a great deal about faraway places like the other side of the Forest and London, âthat The Queen has a grand tea every day in her palace, with buttered toast and crumpets, so I shouldnât think weâd need to give her anything to eat. Her present should be something to treasure.â
âIâve never had much luck finding treasure,â sighed Pooh. âBut I did once find the North Pole. Do you suppose The Queen might like that?â. The friends thought this an excellent idea, but it wasnât long before they realised that finding the North Pole once was a very fine thing but that finding it again was an altogether different thing. Suddenly the Forest seemed to be full of sticks that could or could not be the North Pole. âThis will never do,â announced Rabbit. âDo ...â mumbled Pooh. âThat brings to mind a little hum which Iâd like to hum if it was felt that a hum was called for at such a time of thoughtfulness.â
And without waiting for a reply, he began: The Queen lived in her palace, as Queens often do. Doing all those busy things that busy Queens do. But The Queen could never know, as you and I do, That doing nothing much can be the BEST thing to do. So from a forest far away, for your special day, Weâre sending you some quiet and a little time to play. And quiet there was. The sort of quiet that makes the tip of your
nose turn a sunset-shade of pink.
âBear,â announced Christopher Robin solemnly. âThat hum is fit for a Queen. That hum shall be The Queenâs present. Owl shall write it out, and you and I and Eeyore will deliver it to Buckingham Palace. And Piglet must come too because London is a very big place indeed and even small animals, if they are very good friends, can make everything alright.â
And so it was decided and Owl was called for. Owl fussed here and fussed there and used up a good deal of time, paper and ink but at last, it was done, and everyone admired it. Kanga, who knew how important presentation was, especially for Queens, took the hum, rolled it and tied a thick vine around it. Into the vine she twisted wild heather, columbine, buttercups, meadowsweet, thyme and lastly a thistle, kindly donated by Eeyore. Christopher Robin also found a beautiful, bright red balloon, which he thought The Queen might enjoy on grey days.

âPiglet, you should hold it,â he said. âThat way, we wonât lose you in the crowd.â Piglet held on very tightly to the balloon. He wasnât quite sure what a crowd was, something like a dark cloud perhaps, but in any case, he didnât want to get lost in it and was pleased the balloon would help. So, the presents were ready and, side-by-side, Winnie-the-Pooh (Edward Bear, Bear of Very Little Brain, Brave Adventurer and Loyal
Friend), his small companion Piglet, Eeyore and Christopher Robin set off for London.
âOf course, London is on quite the other side,â remarked Christopher Robin as they were walking. âOf the sea?â asked Pooh, somewhat alarmed. âNot the sea, I shouldnât think,â replied Christopher Robin,
whose Geography lessons so far had been mostly spent colouring in edgy bits. âBut certainly the country or county. Iâm not quite sure which. In any case, it is very far off, and we shall have to catch a train.â âI do hope it wants to be caught,â said Pooh, who was already a little out of puff from the walk. But the train was good enough to stop for them in the station so there was no catching to be done at all and there was plenty of time to climb aboard and find four comfy seats and then they were off!
âWould you be so kind as to stay very close by?â asked an anxious Piglet as they got off the train at Victoria Station.

How to Write a 100-Word Essay
19 jul 2018.
Writing a 100-word essay is often not as easy a task as it sounds. Many teachers will assign short essays to test the student's ability to write concise essays that demonstrate knowledge of the topic, without becoming too wordy. Whether you are writing a long term paper or a short response, formulating your thoughts onto paper can be tough. With a 100-word essay restriction, writing too much is not the issue. The problem in a short response essay is getting your point across while maintaining less than 100 words.

1 Know Your Topic and Guidelines
The purpose for an essay varies according to its type, so it's important to know whether you are writing a persuasive essay, an informative essay or some other type. Carefully read the instructions to determine what type of essay is required and if your professor has established any specific guidelines that you must follow like certain margins or font size. Decide on a topic and conduct research on that topic.
2 Outline the Essay
Create an outline for the essay. Since the essay can only include 100 words, plan to only write seven to 10 sentences. Leave one or two sentences for the thesis, four to eight sentences for the body paragraph and one sentence for the conclusion.
3 Write a Thesis Statement
A thesis statement is the heart of an essay because it lets the reader know what the essay will be about. Write a concise thesis statement that identifies the points you will be making in the body paragraph. A thesis can also serve as an introduction in a short essay.
4 Compose a Body Paragraph
Write the body paragraph of your short essay. As you write, make sure your sentences are supporting your thesis. To make the best use of your 100-word limit, choose longer, descriptive words instead of filler words.
5 Conclude the Essay
A strong conclusion is naturally short and sweet while bringing the essay full circle by re-establishing your thesis statement. End the essay using one sentence that summarizes your topic and reinforces your thesis statement.
6 Revise Your Work
Read through your short essay and try to find a more concise way to reword a sentence. Look for grammatical errors and places you can use stronger words that take up less of the word count. If you are using a computer and writing software, use the spell-check tool, if applicable.
- If you are writing the paper on a computer with writing software, check the word count of your short essay before turning it in to ensure you are under the limit.

How to Write a 100-Words Essay: Learning How to Fit into the Limit + Examples
Writing a 100 words essay may sound incredibly easy as it won’t require much time on preparation and creation. At the same time, for many of us, it might be challenging to fit all the thoughts in less than a page. That is why to write a successful 100 words paper, you will have to stay concise while choosing only the most essential information. Or, you can check our essay writing tips and examples to be sure that you will easily handle such an assignment.
How Long is a 100-Words Essay?
Often students think that 100 words are just a necessary minimum, so they write a 250 words essay or even longer, considering that the more is always better. That is not entirely true as the professor may ask you to write such a short essay specifically to see how well you can push all your ideas in the tight word limit. For this reason, try to stick to 100-150 word limit to meet the requirements; at the same time, don’t write less than 100 words as well (if that is actually possible).
The Basic Format of a 100-Words Essay
Having no space for the long introductions, you should be straightforward and go straight to the point. The generalizations at the beginning of the essay, which could be perceived normally in longer pieces of writing (like five pages essay or ten pages paper), will only take the precious space here. It doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t introduce your topic or finish with the conclusion: these parts of the essay are essential even in a short story. Therefore, you can start from your thesis statement, making it an introductory one as well: you will guide your readers from the start while ensuring the flow of the writing. Basically, your 100-words essay will have a structure as below.
1. Thesis statement (Introduction)
2. Body (4-5 sentences):
- Topic sentence
- Supporting sentences
3. Conclusion (1 sentence).
As you don’t have enough space, you will probably not need to add a concluding sentence in your body paragraph as you will be able to present only one argument in such a short paper.
Tips for Writing an Essay for a 100 Words
If you don’t belong to those people who consider writing a 100-words paper easy, you can use some tips below to make the process of writing easier.
1. Avoid generalization
If your sentence is evident to the majority of the audience, delete it. You are incredibly tight in the word limit, so you should leave some space to the significant point of your writing.
2. Choose shorter synonyms
Using fewer words instead of long phrases is always a good idea: it improves the flow of your text, making it much easier to read. However, while you can be a fan of sophisticated word combination in the long papers, you should definitely look for the shorter version of your favorite phrases when you writing is limited to 100 words only.
3. Don’t forget about transitions
You might think that a short essay presupposes omitting any phrases that do not add value to the content (and that is generally true); however, this rule does not work with transitions. You will “spend” only 4-5 words out of 100 to use it, but will make your paper sound much more coherent. Therefore, don’t think about omitting transitions, even if you are a little bit over your words limit.
4. Leave the informative sentences only
Each of the sentence you use should be packed with information that is relevant to the topic of your essay. After finishing writing an essay, read once again and delete all the sentences that do not contribute much to the content. If the sentence is valuable only partially, try to combine this part with other sentence and delete the rest.
5. Avoid examples and numbers
Don’t write a long statistics even to make your point more credible: use it only if you can describe it in few sentences. Examples are absolutely unnecessary in this type of an essay as they will take much space while not adding much value.
6. Don’t choose a complicated topic
If you have a choice, forget about tricky topics that require basic knowledge on the topic and in-depth research. You won’t be able to use all the information in the text anyway, so stick to something simple, yet original. However, in the majority of cases, the professors choose the suitable topics by themselves to be sure that the text on it is possible to write within 100 words.
7. Use active voice
Many students think that passive voice is absolutely necessary in the academic writing. That is not true: the modern standards require to use active voice when possible to increase the readability of the text. In the short essays, using active voice will also help you to save some space, making the sentences simpler and easier to read.
8. Consider you are writing a post
When we write a post in Facebook or a text message, we usually don’t use much words; instead, we try to keep it short and simple. That’s precisely what you need to do while writing a 100-words essay: imagine that you are writing another post on your wall, willing to catch the attention of your readers while staying concise.
9. Maintain the structure
If you write the essay without introduction or conclusion, you will have a freeform writing, a blog post, a comment, and any other form of writing — but definitely not an essay. Therefore, maintain the structure of the regular essay, focusing on the most essential parts: a thesis statement in the introduction, a topic sentence, and a conclusion.
10. Edit it until you have 100 words
It’s okay to writer a longer paper in the beginning; however, after you have finished writing, read everything once more and delete the parts that are not crucial. If you still haven’t reached the Limit, do that once again. Eventually, after several attempts, you will come up with a perfect essay that fits the necessary word count.

Global Warming 100-Words Essay
The problem of global warming and the possibilities of humanity in overcoming it may be seriously exaggerated. Indeed, the temperature in the world increases every year, as well as the sea level. Some activists change their lifestyle to save the planet: they use electronic transport, avoid using chemical substances, and minimize the pollution from their activities. However, such attempts, although benefit the planet, are unlikely to make significant changes as according to the United Nations Report, emissions from cows are responsible for 18% of greenhouse gases, which is more than emissions from all transport as a whole. Therefore, it would be more useful to stop eating meat or regulate big farms to minimize the risks of global warming. However, any action towards a more responsible life can make small positive changes.
Nature vs. Nurture
Discussion on the essence of human behavior are led throughout the centuries; however, modern science confirms that both nature and nurture play a vital role in shaping the human character. People are born with a set of genes, which partially presuppose the vector of their development. However, even the identical people can be different if raised in different environments: a suitable nurturing may help to minimize the effects of the genetic predisposition, while the person with the perfect genetics may be negatively affected by the surrounding individuals. Therefore, there is no point in defining what is more critical — nature or nurture — as both these factors are responsible for the development of the personality.

The 3 Popular Essay Formats: Which Should You Use?
General Education
Not sure which path your essay should follow? Formatting an essay may not be as interesting as choosing a topic to write about or carefully crafting elegant sentences, but itâs an extremely important part of creating a high-quality paper. In this article, weâll explain essay formatting rules for three of the most popular essay styles: MLA, APA, and Chicago.
For each, weâll do a high-level overview of what your essayâs structure and references should look like, then we include a comparison chart with nitty-gritty details for each style, such as which font you should use for each and whether theyâre a proponent of the Oxford comma. We also include information on why essay formatting is important and what you should do if youâre not sure which style to use.
Why Is Your Essay Format Important?
Does it really matter which font size you use or exactly how you cite a source in your paper? It can! Style formats were developed as a way to standardize how pieces of writing and their works cited lists should look.
Why is this necessary? Imagine youâre a teacher, researcher, or publisher who reviews dozens of papers a week. If the papers didnât follow the same formatting rules, you could waste a lot of time trying to figure out which sources were used, if certain information is a direct quote or paraphrased, even who the paperâs author is. Having essay formatting rules to follow makes things easier for everyone involved. Writers can follow a set of guidelines without trying to decide for themselves which formatting choices are best, and readers donât need to go hunting for the information theyâre trying to find.
Next, weâll discuss the three most common style formats for essays.
MLA Essay Format
MLA style was designed by the Modern Language Association, and it has become the most popular college essay format for students writing papers for class. It was originally developed for students and researchers in the literature and language fields to have a standardized way of formatting their papers, but it is now used by people in all disciplines, particularly humanities. MLA is often the style teachers prefer their students to use because it has simple, clear rules to follow without extraneous inclusions often not needed for school papers. For example, unlike APA or Chicago styles, MLA doesnât require a title page for a paper, only a header in the upper left-hand corner of the page.
MLA style doesnât have any specific requirements for how to write your essay, but an MLA format essay will typically follow the standard essay format of an introduction (ending with a thesis statement), several body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
One of the nice things about creating your works cited for MLA is that all references are structured the same way, regardless of whether theyâre a book, newspaper, etc. Itâs the only essay format style that makes citing references this easy! Here is a guide on how to cite any source in MLA format. When typing up your works cited, here are a few MLA format essay rules to keep in mind:
- The works cited page should be the last paper of your paper.
- This page should still be double-spaced and include the running header of your last name and page number.
- It should begin with âWorks Citedâ at the top of the page, centered.
- Your works cited should be organized in alphabetical order, based on the first word of the citation.
APA Essay Format
APA stands for the American Psychological Association. This format type is most often used for research papers, specifically those in behavioral sciences (such as psychology and neuroscience) and social sciences (ranging from archeology to economics). Because APA is often used for more research-focused papers, they have a more specific format to follow compared to, say, MLA style.
All APA style papers begin with a title page, which contains the title of the paper (in capital letters), your name, and your institutional affiliation (if youâre a student, then this is simply the name of the school you attend). The APA recommends the title of your paper not be longer than 12 words.
After your title page, your paper begins with an abstract. The abstract is a single paragraph, typically between 150 to 250 words, that sums up your research. It should include the topic youâre researching, research questions, methods, results, analysis, and a conclusion that touches on the significance of the research. Many people find it easier to write the abstract last, after completing the paper.
After the abstract comes the paper itself. APA essay format recommends papers be short, direct, and make their point clearly and concisely. This isnât the time to use flowery language or extraneous descriptions. Your paper should include all the sections mentioned in the abstract, each expanded upon.
Following the paper is the list of references used. Unlike MLA style, in APA essay format, every source type is referenced differently. So the rules for referencing a book are different from those for referencing a journal article are different from those referencing an interview. Hereâs a guide for how to reference different source types in APA format . Your references should begin on a new page that says âREFERENCESâ at the top, centered. The references should be listed in alphabetical order.
Chicago Essay Format
Chicago style (sometimes referred to as âTurabian styleâ) was developed by the University of Chicago Press and is typically the least-used by students of the three major essay style formats. The Chicago Manual of Style (currently on its 17th edition) contains within its 1000+ pages every rule you need to know for this style. This is a very comprehensive style, with a rule for everything. Itâs most often used in history-related fields, although many people refer to The Chicago Manual of Style for help with a tricky citation or essay format question. Many book authors use this style as well.
Like APA, Chicago style begins with a title page, and it has very specific format rules for doing this which are laid out in the chart below. After the title page may come an abstract, depending on whether youâre writing a research paper or not. Then comes the essay itself. The essay can either follow the introduction â body â conclusion format of MLA or the different sections included in the APA section. Again, this depends on whether youâre writing a paper on research you conducted or not.
Unlike MLA or APA, Chicago style typically uses footnotes or endnotes instead of in-text or parenthetical citations. Youâll place the superscript number at the end of the sentence (for a footnote) or end of the page (for an endnote), then have an abbreviated source reference at the bottom of the page. The sources will then be fully referenced at the end of the paper, in the order of their footnote/endnote numbers. The reference page should be titled âBibliographyâ if you used footnotes/endnotes or âReferencesâ if you used parenthetical author/date in-text citations.

How Should You Format Your Essay If Your Teacher Hasnât Specified a Format?
What if your teacher hasnât specified which essay format they want you to use? The easiest way to solve this problem is simply to ask your teacher which essay format they prefer. However, if you canât get ahold of them or they donât have a preference, we recommend following MLA format. Itâs the most commonly-used essay style for students writing papers that arenât based on their own research, and its formatting rules are general enough that a teacher of any subject shouldnât have a problem with an MLA format essay. The fact that this style has one of the simplest sets of rules for citing sources is an added bonus!

100-Word Essay FAQ
A 100 words essay would typically be about 1 page long, assuming it is double-spaced and written with a standard font (Arial or Times New Roman) in 12-point size. If the text is single-spaced, it will be twice shorter. Other factors that influence the 100-word essay length are formatting and paragraph structure.
How many paragraphs are there in a 100 words essay? A paper of such a length would contain 1 to 2 paragraphs. This works for an academic writing assignment because a typical paragraph there is about 100 words long.
It usually takes 2 to 4 minutes to type a text of this length on your keyboard at an average speed. However, if you are assigned a 100 words essay, it is going to take much more time, as you will need to conduct research, study the sources, and plan your paper. Writing a solid essay of 100 words will take about an hour.
At a rough estimate, 100 words would take up about 10 to 15 lines. However, the exact number of lines in your 100-word essay depends on a number of factors such as the spacing, the font size, and the margins.

A 100 Word “Why Major” Essay Example and Analysis
This article was written based on the information and opinions presented by Hale Jaeger in a CollegeVine livestream. You can watch the full livestream for more info.
Whatâs Covered:
100 word essay example, essay strengths, essay weaknesses, is your âwhy majorâ essay strong enough.
In this article, we will look at the Purdue short essay question, provide an example of a response, and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the essay. The prompt reads as follows:Â
Briefly discuss your reasons for pursuing the major that you have selected. (100 words) Â
As you can see, 100 words is not very much space and requires a short response. However, there is still a lot that you can fit in here.
One of the strengths of this essay is that it is really specific. It tells a story of something that actually happened when Serena Williams fell during Wimbledon, injured herself, and had to retire from the match.Â
At the same time, this essay makes sure that the anecdote is personal. We can feel the emotion because the author has explained to the audience that Serena is someone that theyâve looked up to for a long time. Additionally, they have added that there is a family connection to this role model, since the writer includes that they used to watch tennis with their older sister. The essay manages to tell an emotional and personal story.
Of course, there are a few drawbacks to this response. The most significant one is that the author never actually mentions their intended major and therefore doesnât answer the question. Instead, they go straight to the career they are trying to pursue. While it is great to mention your career goals if you have more space in the essay, it is crucial to first mention your academic and intellectual interests first. The author could have remedied this by writing something like â âThis scene cemented my desire to support athletes through their worst times, and therefore I plan to study biology so that I can go into sports medicine.âÂ
Another weakness of this essay is that some of the sentences are a little fluffy and could be cut down to save space. The sentence, âI realized that so much more of her pros lay in the battles she lost,â doesnât really tell us much about sports medicine or an intended major. It just highlights how much the author idolizes Serena Williams; this is fine but is not relevant to this essay in particular. If the author had cut that sentence, they could have used the extra space to talk more about why they want to pursue a career in sports medicine and how they want to get there with their chosen major.
One final weakness in this essay is that there is nothing specifically cited about Purdue. By cutting back on some of the fluff in other sentences, such as words or phrases that they donât necessarily need to get their points across, the author could have used the extra space to talk about programs or professors at Purdue that could help them achieve their goals.Â
Essays account for around 25% of your admissions decision, as theyâre your chance to humanize your application and set yourself apart from other applicants with strong profiles.Â
The âWhy Majorâ essay is especially important, as it allows you to reflect on your unique interests and fit with the school. Your supplement needs to demonstrate your interest in the major and paint a picture of how youâll contribute to their program.
To understand if your essay is strong enough, we recommend using our Peer Essay Review tool , where you can get a free review of your essay from another student. You can also improve your own writing skills by reviewing other studentsâ essays. This tool will make it easier to understand your essayâs strengths and weaknesses, and help you make your writing even more compelling.

Writing the 100-Word Memoir
by Fija Callaghan
With more and more life-changing memoirs hitting the shelves, emerging writers are feeling themselves increasingly drawn to the creative nonfiction genre. But embarking on any book-length project can be intimidating⊠even when the subject is your own life.
To warm up your writerâs muscles and get some practice crafting a narrative, why not try challenging yourself with a 100-word memoir? These snapshot stories may not take up much space on the page, but they can pack a substantial punch.
Weâll take you through everything you need to know to start writing your own miniature masterpieces.
What is a memoir?
First, letâs clarify: what exactly is a memoir? And is that the same as an autobiography or personal essay?
A memoir is an exploration of a memory or series of memoriesâoften the ones that shaped the person you are today. Unlike an autobiography or biography, it isnât a landscape of your entire life. Instead, a memoir will usually just focus on a period of a few years.
Some memoirs combine other types of nonfiction, too. For example, many cookbooks are hybrid memoirsâthey feature recipes alongside anecdotes about the writerâs personal experiences. Our lives are rich in engaging stories, and these moments can make traditional nonfiction feel more accessible.

Writing a 100-word memoirâor a series of themâis fantastic training for emerging writers and students at any stage of their journey. It forces you to focus on your word choice and figurative language in a precise, crystalline way; it develops your ability to create a big impact through small moments in timeâa good thing even in longer works of writing.
Through the writing process, youâll learn to make every single word fight for its place on the page. These are skills that you can take with you into other types of writingâwhether itâs a longer short story, a personal essay, a poem, an academic paper, a teaching lesson, or your breakout debut novel.
Does your memoir need to be exactly 100 words?
Really, any short story should be as minuscule or as sprawling as it needs to beâwhether thatâs 50 words or 5,000. But consider your 100-word memoir as a personal challenge, or an exercise for the mind. If your memoir ends up being 103 words, which of those three words can you live without? If itâs 80 words, which moment can you give a bit more depth?
Your mini-memoir doesnât need to be exactly 100 words, but youâll find the practice more beneficial for your journey as a writer if you push yourself to hit your target dead centre. Plus, publication outlets often set strict word limits and wonât accept submissions that are too short or too long.
Weâll look closer at ways to send your 100-word memoir out into the world below.
Micro-memoir examples
To get an idea of how to create small stories of your life, take a look at these excerpts from honest, thought-provoking literature.
Reasons to Stay Alive , by Matt Haig
My mum and dad were at the airport. They stood there looking tired and happy and worried all at once. We hugged. We drove back. Mum turned around in the passenger seat and looked at me and smiled and the smile had a slightly crumpled quality, her eyes glazed with tears. I felt it. The weight of Mum. The weight of being a son that had gone wrong. The weight of being loved. The weight of being a disappointment. The weight of being a hope that hadnât happened the way it should have.
This example, an excerpt from a longer memoir and guide to understanding mental illness, creates a big picture in a very small space. It doesnât waste time setting up the writerâs challenges, but instead lets them come through naturally in the actions of the characters.
This snapshot makes a point of focusing closely on one small moment in time, and the experience of the narrator as they struggle to understand what theyâre feeling.
The Bell Jar , by Sylvia Plath
My grandfather and I had a standing joke. He was the head waiter at a country club near my hometown, and every Sunday my grandmother drove in to bring him home for his Monday off. My brother and I alternated going with her, and my grandfather always served Sunday super to my grandmother and whichever of us was along as if we were regular club guests. He loved introducing me to special titbits, and by the age of nine I had developed a passionate taste for cold vichyssoise and caviar and anchovy paste.
Sylvia Plathâs iconic work of autofiction takes this moment to reach back into the protagonistâs life and visit a happier time. This vignette creates a clear relationship between the narrator and their grandfather, as well as framing the person the narrator goes on to become.
With only a few words the reader can see an entire childhood.
âCrush,â by Brenda Miller
Years ago, on the island of Santorini, I walked the village at sunrise, gazing at vineyards that grow differently thereâclose to the ground, like mounded beans, rather than the upright regiments I knew in California. In Greece, the grapes sprawl in leisure, indifferent to the future. Or not indifferent, but plump with it, glad to be turned to a greater purpose. I always want to be there, in that village at dawn; I want to be those grapes beholden to the wine, born to a pleasure that comes only after the crush.
Unlike the first two examples from larger works, this piece of flash fiction stands alone as it takes the reader to a Grecian island through the eyes of someone seeing it for the first time. The author uses figurative language and personification to bring the setting, and their experience with it, to life.
Art Matters , by Neil Gaiman
I was lucky. I had an excellent library growing up, and met the kind of librarians who did not mind a small, unaccompanied boy heading back into the childrenâs library every morning and working his way through the card catalogue, looking for books with ghosts or magic or rockets in them, looking for vampires or detectives or witches or wonders. They were good librarians. They would help me find other books. They would help. They treated me with respect. I was not used to being treated with respect as an eight-year-old.
This excerpt from Neil Gaimanâs novella-length memoir shows how a storyteller was born in a short, standalone story from the writerâs childhood.
Childhood memories are excellent short story fodder, especially since we can understand their effects on us better in retrospect (weâll look at more at ideas for 100-word memoirs below).
Conversations With Friends , by Sally Rooney
Bobbi and I often performed at spoken word events and open mic nights. When we were outside smoking and male performers tried to talk to us, Bobbi would always pointedly exhale and say nothing, so I had to act as our representative. This meant a lot of smiling and remembering details about their work. I enjoyed playing this kind of character, the smiling girl who remembered things. Bobbi told me she thought I didnât have a âreal personality,â but she said she meant it as a compliment.
Although this example is from a work of fiction, the first-person narrative effectively illustrates how evocative a mini-memoir can be. In this excerpt, the narrator focuses on a singular memory in order to explore her relationship with her best friend and co-performer.
Tips for crafting your own 100-word memoir
Now that we know what these micro-memoirs look like in practice, here are a few things to keep in mind as you begin the writing process of crafting your own story.
Choose a small moment in time
As you can see from these examples, the most effective way to create a 100-word memoir is to zoom in on a specific moment or memory and crystallise it for the reader. Instead of trying to tell your entire life story, focus on a pivotal moment that would go on to have a larger impact and shape your onward journey.
This might be something like an eye-opening first date, a family event, the moment you discovered a small fortune behind your house, or a childhood summer memory that stayed with you all your life.
Our existence is a series of these small, interconnected moments; your job is to choose one and show the reader why it made an impact on the person you are now.
Moments that might inspire your memoir:
Here are some more ideas to spark your creativity.
A life-changing minute during a summer holiday
An early memory with your mother or father
A conversation overheard on a bus ride
A moment with your friends that still makes you laugh
A stranger who taught you an unexpected lesson
The moment you met your husband/wife/partner
One of the many adventures you had as a child
The time you learned the truth about a childhood belief
If youâre looking for more ideas, follow this link to some writing prompts to get your creativity flowing!
Consider your theme
Even though youâre only taking up a small amount of space on the page, your 100-word memoir should resonate emotionally with the readerâand you accomplish this by giving it a message.
Think about what you want your short story to convey. Hope for a better future? The importance of intergenerational storytelling? Stranger danger? What key lesson do you want the reader to listen to as they read your story? See if you can condense your 100-word memoir into a single, clear idea.
Themes to explore in your 100-word memoir:
When writing about events in our lives, we want to extend a powerful message to the reader. Here are some more core themes you can touch upon in your short memoirs.
Self respect is worth more than an easy payout
Real friendship means always having your back
Always keep learning, no matter your age
Money canât buy happiness
Lived experience is the best education
Mean people are mean because theyâre afraid
When something seems too good to be true, it probably is
Life is too short for regrets
You donât have to travel far to find adventures
Teaching is the best way to learn
Found family is more important than blood family
These are just a few ideas. A good way to find your theme is to look at the moment youâre writing about and ask yourself, âWhat lesson did I learn from this?â âWhat new perspective did I gain?â âHow did this moment in time change me?â Your answer will reveal the storyâs true theme.
Embrace specificity
Instead of wasting valuable words on sprawling description, focus on just a few key details and bring them to life. If your 100-word memoir is about a love affair gone wrong, how can you hint at the broad scope of the story in the space of only a few moments? How can certain elements hint at the past and future of the characters? Consider sight, smell, sound, mood, objects and their meaning.
A great example is this poem by Katie Wilson , which uses the smell of burning to ground a pivotal memory about the writerâs mother.
See if thereâs a way you can condense a big story into a single sensory detailâusing targeted word choice to convey an entire life in the same amount of space as a few minutes of lived experience.
Tips for specificity in your micro story:
In prose writing, weâre often told to use all the senses. Because youâre working in such a small space, you may find it more effective to describe just one or two. You can zoom in on something you hear, like the sound of someoneâs voice as they tell you some bad news; something you smell, like Katie Wilsonâs burning toast; or something you feel, like the sensation of sand caught in a bathing suit.
The more close and detailed you can get to a particular sense or sensation, the more your memoir will come to life for the reader.
It also helps to avoid sprawling across time too much. Instead of writing about an entire music lesson, write about the moment you hit the right note. Instead of writing about the two years you spent in therapy, choose a few minutes in which the therapist said something that opened your eyes.
Limit your characters
While it can be tempting to introduce all your friends and family into your 100-word memoir, youâll find that your story will be more powerful if you focus on just a couple of peopleâtwo or three at most.
Remember, specificity is your secret weapon. 100 words is a small amount of space to get to know these people, so youâll find the process less challenging if you allow fewer characters more real estate on the page.
Plus, with fewer characters you can focus on the ways these relationships affected you and your growth as a person. How did your experiences with your friend, partner, or parent shape the person youâve become?
Stories are all about humanity, and the 100-word memoir is a good place to explore these relationships.
Ideas for characters to explore in your memoirs:
Thereâs no limit to the sort of people you can write about in your 100-word memoir. Your mother, father, sibling, husband, and squad are all rich in writing inspiration. But , consider reaching farther out and discovering people who have impacted you in small ways.
Here are a few ideas.
A stranger who helped you when you were in trouble.
The cashier who made you feel better when you were having a hard day.
An encouraging teacher who changed the course of your life.
Your first childhood crush
A kind stranger whose compliment made you smile for the rest of the week
A child who taught you an unexpected lesson
A writer who encouraged you when you were feeling lost
A tourist you met while on holiday
Use an objective voice
Because youâre expressing a small, precise moment, you may find it helpful to use the objective voiceâletting the actions of the story speak for themselves, rather than using a lot of character emotion.
Instead of saying, âMy parents hurt my feelings when they missed my graduation,â show the way you reacted and what you did to cope with those feelings (this, by the way, comes from the classic writing rule of â Show, donât tell â).
When you use objectivity in your 100-word memoir, you donât lose the emotional impact of your wordsâyou make them even more powerful.
Your title is your last step
While you may want to choose a title at the very beginning, you might find that the right title becomes clearer after youâve written your 100-word memoir and have a better idea of its core theme. The right title can make your reader laugh, or reveal more nuance in your story.
Next steps for your 100-word memoir
Now that you have an expertly crafted 100-word memoirâor a series of themâhow can you get them into the hands of readers?
Unlike a novel, a 100-word memoir isnât going to sit on the shelves of your local Barnes and Noble. But! There are a few ways you can send these words out into the world.
Seek out journals for miniature stories
There are a number of literary journals that specialize in 100-word stories including the OG 100 Word Story as well as Friday Flash Fiction , The Citron Review , The Drabble , Microfiction Monday , Splonk (through their 100-word branch SplonkMicros), and, for you genre fiction aficionados, Martian Magazine .
All of these journals focus on microfiction and nonfiction of 100 words or less! Plus, theyâre a great source of inspiration for how other writers have flourished within the constraints of the 100-word story. (And if thereâs one word you just canât bear to part with, thereâs a journal for that tooâ 101 Words .)
Gain international renown
There are also contests devoted to the short-short form, including the internationally respected Fish Flash Fiction Prize and the Bath Flash Fiction Awardâboth of these have upper limits of 300 words. The Bridport Flash Fiction Prize has a limit of 250 words.
Other contests, like the Oxford Flash Fiction Prize, have higher word counts but welcome small, concise stories.
Use small moments to create a big picture
But sometimes, you may have several 100-word memoirs or stories that fit together to create a larger wholeâa mosaic of your life. In this case, a long-form book might be the answer after all. You can link together a string of your 100-word memoirs so that they work to create a complete novella-length memoir. This novella-in-flash story format is becoming increasingly popular, and itâs a good way to reach an audience with your bite-size memories.
Explore your life through the 100-word short story
Our lives are made up of tiny momentsâthe beautiful, the challenging, the inspiring, and the defining. Using these experiences to create these mini memoirs is a great way to stretch your limitations as a writer, improve your mastery of language and word choice, and convey the story of your life in a fresh new way.

Want to write a college essay that sets you apart? Three tips to give you a head start
1. Keep it real. Itâs normal to want to make a good impression on the school of your choice, but itâs also important to show who you really are. So just be yourself! Compelling stories might not be perfectly linear or have a happy ending, and thatâs OK. Itâs best to be authentic instead of telling schools what you think they want to hear.
2. Be reflective . Think about how youâve changed during high school. How have you grown and improved? What makes you feel ready for college, and how do you hope to contribute to the campus community and society at large?
3. Look to the future. Consider your reasons for attending college. What do you hope to gain from your education? What about college excites you the most, and what would you like to do after you graduate? Answering these questions will not only give colleges insight into the kind of student youâll be, but it will also give you the personal insight youâll need to choose the school thatâs right for you.

How to Write an Essay Outline | Guidelines & Examples
Published on August 14, 2020 by Jack Caulfield . Revised on July 23, 2023.
An essay outline is a way of planning the structure of your essay before you start writing. It involves writing quick summary sentences or phrases for every point you will cover in each paragraph , giving you a picture of how your argument will unfold.

Organizing your material, presentation of the outline, examples of essay outlines, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about essay outlines.
At the stage where youâre writing an essay outline, your ideas are probably still not fully formed. You should know your topic  and have already done some preliminary research to find relevant sources , but now you need to shape your ideas into a structured argument.
Creating categories
Look over any information, quotes and ideas youâve noted down from your research and consider the central point you want to make in the essayâthis will be the basis of your thesis statement . Once you have an idea of your overall argument, you can begin to organize your material in a way that serves that argument.
Try to arrange your material into categories related to different aspects of your argument. If youâre writing about a literary text, you might group your ideas into themes; in a history essay, it might be several key trends or turning points from the period youâre discussing.
Three main themes or subjects is a common structure for essays. Depending on the length of the essay, you could split the themes into three body paragraphs, or three longer sections with several paragraphs covering each theme.
As you create the outline, look critically at your categories and points: Are any of them irrelevant or redundant? Make sure every topic you cover is clearly related to your thesis statement.
Order of information
When you have your material organized into several categories, consider what order they should appear in.
Your essay will always begin and end with an introduction and conclusion , but the organization of the body is up to you.
Consider these questions to order your material:
- Is there an obvious starting point for your argument?
- Is there one subject that provides an easy transition into another?
- Do some points need to be set up by discussing other points first?
Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.
Within each paragraph, youâll discuss a single idea related to your overall topic or argument, using several points of evidence or analysis to do so.
In your outline, you present these points as a few short numbered sentences or phrases. They can be split into sub-points when more detail is needed.
The template below shows how you might structure an outline for a five-paragraph essay.
- Thesis statement
- First piece of evidence
- Second piece of evidence
- Summary/synthesis
- Importance of topic
- Strong closing statement
You can choose whether to write your outline in full sentences or short phrases. Be consistent in your choice; donât randomly write some points as full sentences and others as short phrases.
Examples of outlines for different types of essays are presented below: an argumentative, expository, and literary analysis essay.
Argumentative essay outline
This outline is for a short argumentative essay evaluating the internetâs impact on education. It uses short phrases to summarize each point.

- Thesis statement: Internet use a net positive
- Data exploring this effect
- Analysis indicating it is overstated
- Studentsâ reading levels over time
- Why this data is questionable
- Video media
- Interactive media
- Speed and simplicity of online research
- Questions about reliability (transitioning into next topic)
- Evidence indicating its ubiquity
- Claims that it discourages engagement with academic writing
- Evidence that Wikipedia warns students not to cite it
- Argument that it introduces students to citation
- Summary of key points
- Value of digital education for students
- Need for optimism to embrace advantages of the internet

You will sometimes be asked to hand in an essay outline before you start writing your essay . Your supervisor wants to see that you have a clear idea of your structure so that writing will go smoothly.
Even when you do not have to hand it in, writing an essay outline is an important part of the writing process . Itâs a good idea to write one (as informally as you like) to clarify your structure for yourself whenever you are working on an essay.
If you have to hand in your essay outline , you may be given specific guidelines stating whether you have to use full sentences. If youâre not sure, ask your supervisor.
When writing an essay outline for yourself, the choice is yours. Some students find it helpful to write out their ideas in full sentences, while others prefer to summarize them in short phrases.
You should try to follow your outline as you write your essay . However, if your ideas change or it becomes clear that your structure could be better, itâs okay to depart from your essay outline . Just make sure you know why youâre doing so.

Remember to use clear and simple language, and avoid unnecessary words or information. Proofread your essay carefully to ensure it is error-free and flows smoothly. With these tips, you can create a stellar 250-word essay that showcases your writing skills effectively.
Understanding the Assignment Requirements
Before you start writing your 250-word essay, it is crucial to carefully read and understand the assignment requirements. Make sure you grasp the topic, the purpose of the essay, and any specific instructions provided by your instructor or professor.
Highlight key points such as the essay’s objective, the audience you are writing for, the structure or format required, the style of writing (formal or informal), and any specific guidelines on sources or citations.
- Take note of the word count specified for the essay.
- Clarify any doubts you may have with your instructor to ensure you are on the right track.
- Organize your thoughts and create an outline based on the assignment requirements before you begin writing.
By thoroughly understanding the assignment requirements, you can ensure that your 250-word essay meets the criteria and effectively conveys your message to the intended audience.
Brainstorming and Outlining Your Ideas
Before you start writing your 250-word essay, it’s essential to brainstorm and outline your ideas. This step will help you organize your thoughts and ensure a coherent and well-structured essay.
Start by brainstorming ideas related to the topic of your essay. Jot down any relevant points, examples, or arguments that come to mind. Consider different perspectives and angles that you can explore in your essay.
Once you have a list of ideas, create an outline for your essay. This outline should include an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. In the introduction, briefly introduce your topic and provide some background information. The body paragraphs should expand on the ideas you brainstormed and provide supporting evidence. Finally, the conclusion should summarize your main points and restate your thesis.
By brainstorming and outlining your ideas before you start writing, you’ll set yourself up for success and make the writing process much smoother.
Developing Clear and Concise Body Paragraphs
When writing a 250-word essay, it’s essential to develop clear and concise body paragraphs to support your main argument. Each body paragraph should focus on a single main point and provide evidence to support it. Here are some tips to help you develop effective body paragraphs:
1. Topic Sentence:
Start each body paragraph with a topic sentence that introduces the main idea of the paragraph. This sentence should clearly state the point you will be discussing.
2. Supporting Evidence:
Provide specific examples, facts, or quotes to support your main point. Make sure that the evidence is relevant and directly relates to your argument.
3. Analysis:
After presenting your evidence, analyze it to explain how it supports your main argument. Discuss the significance of the evidence and how it strengthens your position.
4. Transition:
Use transitional words and phrases to smoothly move from one paragraph to the next. This helps to maintain the flow of your essay and connect your ideas cohesively.
By following these guidelines, you can develop clear and concise body paragraphs that enhance the overall structure and quality of your 250-word essay.

Your chance of acceptance, your chancing factors, extracurriculars, good length for college essays: what does 650 words look like.
I've seen college essays requiring 650 words, but what does that look like? Any advice on how to make sure I'm staying within that range?
A 650-word essay is approximately a page and a half to two pages long when using a standard 12-point font and standard spacing between lines. To visualize what 650 words look like, think about a typical two-page, double-spaced essay with an introduction, three main body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
To ensure you stay within the 650-word limit, begin by drafting an outline for your essay to help you organize your thoughts and stay focused on the main points you want to convey. Keep your introduction and conclusion concise, whereas you can afford to go into a bit more detail in the body paragraphs. As you write, consider using a word processor with a built-in word count feature (such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or Pages) to keep track of your word count in real-time.
After completing your essay, it is helpful to revise and edit your work to remove any unnecessary words or phrases, and to make your sentences more concise and clear. This process will also help you ensure that you're adhering to the word count requirement.
Finally, remember that while it's essential to stay within the word limit, quality and effective storytelling should be your priority. Focus on conveying your message and telling your story in a way that captivates your audience and demonstrates who you are as an applicant.
