Urban Homeworks

“We are a small team that works to make housing equitable and dignified, and to do that we have to engage our community and invest in policy work,” AsaleSol Young, Executive Director of Urban Homeworks said. At the end of 2022, Young and their team worked with Propel to secure a loan to bring on a Finance and Operations Director. This capacity building investment allowed the rest of the staff to focus on their positional goals.

“A partnership with Propel is a no-brainer for us,” Young said. “We love working with Propel because it really feels like a partnership. We know that they understand how we operate and what our needs are.”

Urban Homeworks (UHW) is a 28-year-old nonprofit leading the fight for housing justice so that all people have a safe, stable, and dignified place to live. The organization provides a variety of rental and homeownership opportunities for residents in Minneapolis and St. Paul. In 2023, the organization received its first-ever appropriation from the State of Minnesota.

“This added stability will allow us to really focus on our mission and how we show up in community,” Young said.

The organization has big plans to increase their impact in the coming months and years. They recently broke ground on the first of five passive homes under construction this year. Passive certified homes are the most rigorous energy standard today, following a specific set of rules and guidelines that make them up to 80% more energy-efficient than standard code-built houses. Energy efficiency not only reduces the carbon footprint of a home, but it also leads to greater comfort, lower utility costs for the future homeowners, and better health.

The organization is also holding BIPOC Think Tanks over the summer to dream, collaborate, and ideate with community what a just housing ecosystem could look like.

We want to share with our community and hear from them directly” Young said. “UHW is hosting the space so every person who comes can talk about what they are bringing to that vision.”

Urban Homeworks

Urban Homeworks (UHW) has developed programs to stabilize neighborhoods in Minneapolis since 1995. The organization creates affordable, accessible rental and for-sale housing by building and training a network of more than 17,000 community residents and active volunteers. Their programs have provided construction training and living wage jobs for low-income, at-risk youth and young adults who have redeveloped over 200 properties in northern and southern Minneapolis and St. Paul.

In 2014, the Nonprofits Assistance Fund provided $612,000 financing to refinance UHW’s existing office space and to acquire and rehab additional office space to support its growth. In 2016, Partners for the Common Good provided capital to fund 50% of the loan. The funding allows UHW to expand its programs for providing housing opportunities and construction training to stabilize targeted neighborhoods.

Retirement Account Beneficiary

Typically, retirement assets left to individuals in an estate leave those individuals with a tax burden when the funds are received. Retirement assets where a nonprofit, like Urban Homeworks, is named as a beneficiary pass to the organization at full value, avoiding income taxes. When reviewing estate plans with your attorney and financial advisor, consider leaving your IRA, 401k, or other retirement asset(s) to Urban Homeworks.

Will & Estate Gifts

Many Urban Homeworks supporters choose to leave a donation in their wills and trusts as an important way to have long-term impact, without any upfront cost during their lifetimes. Making a will is one of the most impactful ways to extend your love and generosity to the causes and people you care about most. Legacy giving isn’t only for the wealthy—gifts of any size are deeply appreciated. Together, we can continue making an impact for years to come.

If you are interested in including Urban Homeworks and our mission in your legacy giving , please contact Paul Vliem, Development Director, at   [email protected]

Give From Your IRA

You are required to begin drawing from your traditional IRA at age 72; those distributions taxed at ordinary income tax rates. Your annual income is then boosted, potentially bumping you into a higher tax bracket. The Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) rule allows you to donate those distributions to Urban Homeworks and deduct the donation from your total taxable income. To make a QCD, contact your IRA custodian and let them know that you’d like to donate some or all your IRA distributions to Urban Homeworks and they will cut the check from your account!

For questions or additional information, please contact Paul Vliem, Development Director, at   [email protected] .

Donor Advised Fund (DAF) Giving

You can recommend a grant to Urban Homeworks from your Donor Advised Fund (DAF), as well as the grant amount. Contact your financial institution or foundation, or call your philanthropic advisor or fund manager and let them know you would like to make a gift. The grant will arrive at Urban Homeworks with only the institution’s name and address on it. Please request for your name and address to be included with your grant.

When you make a Donor Advised Fund gift, it’s possible that the sponsoring organization will not share your information with us. Please fill out the form linked HERE when you’ve made a gift so we can thank you and ensure your gift gets to where it is intended.
