This paper first presents a brief overview of the way geotechnical engineering has developed over the last century in association with a number of empirical, analytical and observational approaches. In order to explore the need for fresh perspectives, improvements in existing approaches and the development of new ones, it is necessary to consider the enormous challenges that the engineering profession will face in the foreseeable future due to global developments. These include energy needs, climate change, rising sea levels, rapid increase in population, depletion of resources (water and fossil fuels) and increasing proportion of lands which are ill-suited for development and of foundation sites which are of poor or marginal suitability. Geotechnical engineers must look beyond their narrow specialties and learn to take a holistic perspective in assessing the problems and devising their solutions. Multi-disciplinary approaches, already very desirable for geotechnical engineers, will...

Geotechnics (MDPI)
Brendan C . O'Kelly
On behalf of the editorial board and MDPI Publishing, may we extend a very warm welcome to this first editorial of Geotechnics — a new and international, open access, scholarly journal aimed at showcasing and nurturing high‐quality research and developmental activities in soil and rock engineering and geo‐environmental engineering, worldwide. Ground is a complex domain which is of cardinal importance for both Engineering and the Sciences, including Ground Engineering, Structural Engineer, Hydrology, Geology, Planetary Sciences and Physics. In Engineering, it provides the means for supporting the built environment. It also provides construction materials, defenses against natural disasters and a medium for the flow of water, chemical processes etc. From a civil engineering perspective, Geotechnics is among the oldest engineering disciplines, dating from the Dawn of Civilization.

This book and the accompanying CD-ROM provide a statement of our knowledge and understanding of engineering geology as applied to the urban environment at the start of the 21st century. In particular, this volume demonstrates that: * working standards originally developed nationally are becoming internationalized; * risk assessment, rather than just assessment of hazards, is driving decision-making; * geo-environmental change, whether climatically or anthropogenically driven, is becoming better understood; * greater use of underground space is being made; * the relentless advance of information technology is providing new opportunities for engineering geologists to interpret and visualize the subsurface. This book shows that in developed and developing countries alike, engineering geolgists are increasingly exchanging ideas and learning from each other in a genuine two-way process. These ideas will contribute significantly to the sustainable development of both new and long-establis...

The authors were impressed by their damage investigations after the quake that many problems were caused by insufficient development and dissemination of geotechnical engineering despite that actually more advantage is available from this field of engineering. For improvement of this situation, there has to be new philosophies in application of geotechnical engineering because many application fields are not financially well-supported. Budget saving may lead to catastrophic damage if unexpectedly severe natural disaster occurs. Finally, the importance of wider scope is discussed in future scope of re-construction and retrofitting of existing facilities. In addition, data interpretation on ageing effect on liquefaction potential is addressed.
