Should Animals Be Used in Research?

Any research cannot do without an experimental part, but sometimes, their application is complicated, for example, in human biology. In this case, there are alternatives, such as animal models. Nevertheless, the use of this method is also associated with questions of morality since it concerns living things. However, weighing all the positive and negative aspects, it should be noted that the use of animals in research is justified. The purpose of this essay is to prove this thesis using arguments.

Experiments on animals may seem ineffective in the context of human diseases since, at first glance, the biological structure of these species is different. However, the similarity of the course of chemical reactions and the construction of some systems allows scientists to expand their understanding of both animal and human health through research (“Should animals be used in research?” N.d.). Moreover, there is a massive number of operations and drugs, which development would have been impossible without the participation of animals.

Secondly, the use of animals at the moment is carried out in compliance with all possible ethics. The presence of special acts ensures compliance with moral standards. Animals are kept in comfortable conditions, and all research is carried out with the utmost care to minimize the suffering (“Should animals be used in research?” N.d.). The use of animals in experiments is far from being as immoral and scary as described in some media since researchers treat living beings exceptionally carefully.

Finally, despite the broad technical capabilities available to humanity, some processes are still complicated to model. Even with high-tech equipment and accurate mathematical models, the course of some diseases, for example, asthma, is associated with highly complex physiological processes (“Should animals be used in research?” N.d.). It is challenging to model them, but they can be studied on a living object at much lower costs. Since there is no alternative to a natural experiment in this context, the use of animals is necessary.

Thus, it can be concluded that the use of animals in research is indeed justified. First, living organisms function in much the same way, which is why animal research helps to study the structure of humans. Second, all procedures are conducted in accordance with ethical legislation. Finally, at this moment, the alternatives to using animals simply do not exist. Therefore, until all the issues are resolved, or an alternative method is invented, animals must remain in science.

Introduction

Us statists of animal testing in 2018, facts of animal testing.

  • Over 100 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused in US labs every year.
  • 92% of experimental drugs that are safe and effective in animals fail in human clinical trials because they are too dangerous or don’t work.
  • Labs that use mice, rats, birds, reptiles, and amphibians are exempted from the minimal protections under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA).
  • Up to 90% of animals used in U.S. labs are not counted in the official statistics of animals tested. Take a stand by kidnapping your friends’ products that were tested on animals.
  • Europe, the world’s largest cosmetic market, Israel and India have already banned animal testing for cosmetics and the sale or import of newly animal-tested beauty products.
  • Even animals that are protected under the AWA can be abused and tortured. And the law doesn’t require the use of valid alternatives to animals, even if they are available.
  • According to the Humane Society, registration of a single pesticide requires more than 50 experiments and the use of as many as 12,000 animals.
  • In tests of potential carcinogens, subjects are given a substance every day for 2 years. Others tests involve killing pregnant animals and testing their fetuses.
  • The real-life applications for some of the tested substances are as trivial as an “improved” laundry detergent, new eye shadow, or copycat drugs to replace a profitable pharmaceutical whose patent expired.
  • Alternative tests achieve one or more of the “3 R’s:” replaces a procedure that uses animals with a procedure that doesn’t, reduces the number of animals used in a procedure, refines a procedure to alleviate or minimize potential animal pain.
  • Several cosmetic tests commonly performed on mice, rats, rabbits, and guinea pigs include skin and eye irritation tests where chemicals are rubbed on shaved skin or dripped into the eyes without any pain relief.
