My city is unique, and it amazes me to think of how wholesome Kolkata truly is. It has everything one can wish for, and its people have a secure attachment to their city. I would rather be here than anywhere else in the country because with all her faults and failings, the people of Kolkata are loving, caring, unique. Kolkata was once the capital of India and there are many traces of her lost glory. The city also has much historical significance. The Victoria Memorial is the greatest landmark of the city. This huge white marble structure, an imitation 46902 57 m of the Taj Mahal at Agra, and St Paul’s Cathedral in London was built in memory of Queen Victoria.

The city is located at the mouth of the river Hooghly, a distributary of the river Ganga, which flows into the Bay of Bengal. From days of old, traders visited this city and it has now grown into a big business centre.

Kolkata boasts of people of all castes and creeds, traditions, cultures, languages, dress and foods. Once a city of milk and honey, people from all parts of the country flocked here to put down their roots.

Kolkata is a seat of learning, art, drama,festivals, dance and music.

Kolkata, My Dream City for 100 Reasons – Kolkata, capital of West Bengal is a city of joy for some, for many others it is a city of dreams. There are a 100 things to do in Kolkata if not more. I have done just a fraction of them, and my to do list has more interesting places to see in Kolkata. If you are in undecided about what to do in Kolkata , do save this travel essay for easy reference to plan a trip to this great city of India.

For me it is a city I am dreaming to visit  once more. The memory of the sight of Howrah Bridge has almost faded. The child in me is fantasizing a tram ride, only Kolkata offers this in the whole of India. Hoping to visit Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s house again. British rule has left behind its stamp in the form of Victorian style mansions; I vaguely remember the classic outline of these buildings. The holy effect of Belur Math has worn off. And Dakshineswar Temple? How can I skip that? All these have to be remedied and I am craving for another visit to Kolkata, my dream city.

I had been there a couple of times that is almost two decades back, it was Calcutta city then! Sigh! What I hear now is the city’s facade has changed. Lot of changes outwardly but its traditional spirit hasn’t.

The name “Calcutta” is the Anglicized version of “Kolkata,” which was used during the British colonial period. The city was officially named Calcutta by the British East India Company in the late 17th century. which remained the city’s official name until 2001, when the government of West Bengal officially changed it to “Kolkata” to reflect the original Bengali pronunciation and heritage.

The British adopted and Anglicized “Kalikata” into “Calcutta.” Kalikata , was one of the three villages (along with Sutanuti and Gobindapur) that existed in the area before the city was established.

At the time when it was constructed Howrah Bridge was the 3 rd longest cantilever bridge in world. Today it ranks 6 th . It is also called Rabindra Setu, named after Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
• Prinsep Ghat : This a beautiful riverside promenade along the Hooghly River, perfect for leisurely walks and enjoying the sunset. The Greek-style pavilion is also a popular spot for photography.

Kolkata is home to several outstanding museums but sadly I could explore only two. One of the primary reasons for me to get back to Kolkata is to explore the unseen ones. These museums are reputed to offer a glimpse into the city’s rich history, culture, and art. Have a look at this list of 10 museums in Kolkata that are worth time, effort and money:

• Victoria Memorial Hall : This one tops the list, one of the reasons why I made it a point to visit it during my short stay in Kolkata. A grand marble building dedicated to Queen Victoria, it houses an impressive collection of paintings, manuscripts, and other historical artifacts, offering a glimpse into colonial-era history.
• Indian Museum : Established in 1814, it is the oldest and largest museum in India, featuring extensive collections of artifacts, including fossils, ancient sculptures, coins, and paintings.
• Marble Palace : A 19th-century mansion with an extensive collection of Western sculptures, Victorian furniture, paintings by European and Indian artists, and other antiques.
• Birla Industrial & Technological Museum (BITM) : The first science museum in India, it features interactive exhibits on science and technology, making it a popular destination for students and science enthusiasts.
• Rabindra Bharati Museum : Jorasanko Thakur Bari and this library is in the same complex, hence it is possible to see both. • Asiatic Society Museum : Founded in 1784, it houses a vast collection of manuscripts, sculptures, coins, and inscriptions, reflecting India’s cultural and historical heritage.
• Netaji Bhawan : The former residence of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, it is now a museum dedicated to his life and contributions to India’s freedom struggle, featuring personal artifacts, photographs, and documents.
• Science City : Kids with a bent of mind to science and its wonders will love this place. An interactive science center, it has a variety of exhibits on physical science, space, and technology. There is a space theater and a maritime center too.
• Gurusaday Museum : Located on the outskirts of Kolkata, it houses a unique collection of traditional Bengali folk art, including textiles, paintings, and crafts.

I am at a loss to choose what over what.

I hv been to this city only once. Despite teh crowd, despite the dirt aroun something abt the city mad me fall in love with it!

And I wish you visit happens soon. I would love to spend couple of days shooting around Howrah Bridge and Hoogly, Last visit I could spend only a couple of hours.

I too want to just visit the city … normally I loathe all cities… I want to run to hills… away from the people… but for once I want to go to this one city to see the crowd… to see the buildings.. the calm among the chaos ! 😀

History of Kolkata

 The East India Company took over the trade and gave the name Calcutta in the 17th century. It was a huge colonial city and the capital of the British Indian empire till 1911. Later the capital was shifted to Delhi owing to the growing nationalism among the demography.

Western education and influences first came in India in Calcutta where it became a global city due to the amalgamation of European sciences and literature with Indian art and traditions. It was the hub of independence movements and revolutionary ideas.   

Architecture 

• North Kolkata : This is the area which was most inhabited by the British and the 19th century Victorian style architecture is testimonial to that. It is brimming with overpopulated dwellings and greatly active bazaars. Shyambazaar, Chitpur, Shobhabazaar, Dum Dum, Maniktala are popular centers.  
• Central Kolkata : This is the important business hub of government and private offices like the RBI and the High Court. The Maidan is often cited as the ‘lungs of Kolkata’ as it is in the heart of the city. Victoria Memorial and Kolkata Race Course are present in its vicinity. Central Park and Millennium Park are also popular areas.  
• East Kolkata : This is relatively new and is recently been planned and developed. The Salt Lake City or Bhidannagar, Rajarhat (New Town), Beliaghata are centres of IT and telecommunications industry.  
• South Kolkata : This is the locality which is considered posh and highly developed. Lansdowne, Santoshpur, Golf Green, Ballygunge and Alipore are main attractions. The headquarters for the Eastern Command of the Indian Army is at Fort William.  

  Climate  

 Mostly moderate, climate in Kolkata is fairly pleasant and tropical. The summers which extend from March to June are hot and humid. The winter is not harsh. The coldest month is January where temperatures have sometimes gone to 5 degrees Celsius.

The months of April to June entail heavy rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms. This time is called the ‘kal- boishakhi’. The pollution levels are alarming and increase the risk of lung cancer and other diseases needs to be curbed with.  

 The sex ratio in Kolkata is 899 females per 1000 males (this is lower than the national average). According to the 2011 census, the population of the city is above eleven million and the literacy rate is 87.14%, higher than the national average. Bengali Hindus are a majority.

They worship Goddess Durga and celebrate Durga Pooja with utmost fervour. Kolkata is known for making enchanting sculptures of Mahishasurmardini (Goddess Durga who killed the demon Mahishasur). People here also have great academic inclination.

This place is different from other cities of India because it focuses on football and sports other than just cricket. Residents of Kolkata are known to be modern, logical and intelligent. Marwadis, Biharis and Assamese people are large minorities.  

Kolkata is the major centre for finance and commerce in Eastern India. It is the only city in the east to have an international airport.

Once, it was the financial market of India but due to drop in economy post independence, when leftists kept hurdling the offices with strikes and extreme militant unions marred the commerce scene in the city, the city suffered decline in its popularity as a financial hub and began to be called ‘the dying city’.

It has, however, gained steady progress again and is now a big competition even to international cities.  

Often dubbed as the ‘City of Furious, Creative energy’, the culture, media or sports chapters in this city are a vivacious kaleidoscope of the creative and modern minds of Kolkata. People here love to eat – the innumerable sweets, fish dishes and savoury snacks available at every household and nook and corner of the city is the heartbeat of its culture.

‘Sondesh’, a sweet made of milk extract or ‘chhena’ and ‘rasgulla’, a syrupy white milk ball, are evergreen favourites. Among main dishes, various gourmet fish curries and recipes are something Kolkata and in general Bengalis pride themselves on.

Kolkata’s street food game is top notch as well – inspired by European pallet, the Kathi Roll or noodles served within an egg white wrap is unanimously the number one snack voted by college and office goers. It is a dreamland for foodies. Even in the field of fashion and media, the public is inspirational.   

It is often said that Kolkata houses India’s best singers and aplomb talent for fine arts. Various universally acknowledged painters, writers, singers, dancers, sculptors, engineers and scientists take pride in calling Kolkata their home.   

Trams are the specialty of Kolkata’s transport. They are mono trains that run on tracks made on roads. Still a huge hit amongst the public, it is a mirror of the rich heritage and history of this old yet youthful city.

Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal is amongst the four metropolitan cities in India. It was earlier known as Calcutta and the name was later changed by the government of India. It is the third largest metropolitan city in India and also one of the most productive city, after Delhi and Mumbai. The GDP of the city ranges from 60 to 150 Million Dollars. The city has a unique culture and a unique vibe to it. My city Kolkata is rooted and follows the culture and traditions completely. The people living in this city are educated and are also very much inclined towards art and culture. They enjoy listening to music and they love reading. The people have a very British Taste and the upbringing is also such. My city Kolkata is a beautiful city and it lightens up during the nine days of Durga Pooja, where no one works but enjoy the festival to the fullest.

Kolkata was earlier the capital of India during the British Raj but Delhi became the capital of India because it was in the center and it was logistically convenient for the British government to rule from there. Job Charnock was the founder of the city. The city was recognized only in the 1960’s. it was earlier ruled by the Mughal emperors. In 1850, Calcutta had two areas divided between the Indians and the British and it was known as White town and Black town. Calcutta also has a port and it was used for various reasons. The port was also bombed several times by the Japanese in between the years 1942 and 1944. In 1943, many people living in Bengal died because of the Famine. After independence, the city saw a lot of growth. The city is also very politically inclined.

Art and Culture

The culture of Kolkata is unique and people love eating and celebrating. The famous festival of Kolkata is Durga Pooja which is nine days long function and the people of the state and the city celebrates it with joy and excitement. Bengal is also famous for its seafood. It is also famous for its heritage, literacy, and art. The city was also known as the ‘city of furious, creative energy’. The great and legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray comes from Bengal and he has given the world the best cinema. The great poet Rabindranath Tagore was born in Bengal. The city is extremely high in its culture and art. It has many museums and art galleries that can be explored. The city also has many theatres. The Kalighat painting is a famous painting, which was established in the 19th century. The place is also famous for its sweets.

Kolkata is one of the places that is also inclined towards sports and especially football. Cricket is undoubtedly the most played game as the British played here and it is the home ground of cricket for the country. The Eden gardens are the most popular stadium and people has a lot of memories associated with this stadium. The people also play other sports but cricket and football dominate the area.

The people of Kolkata speaks Bengali as it is their regional language and it is the spoken language. The people also speak Hindi and English.

The city of dreams, the city of unhindered zeal and fervour, Kolkata is the heart of India. It is a magnificent city characterized by august rivers, handsome bridges, stupendous and majestic monuments, and the hustle – bustle on streets. This city is a living megacity which boasts of culturally rich ethnicity and exemplarily awarded leaders and laureates. This city has witnessed ancient, dignified and omnipotent dynasties rise and fall and has had innumerable rulers from the primitive period to the medieval British Viceroys and the contemporary leaders.

The real heart of the city lies in its people. The people of Kolkata are ‘food lovers’. The succulent and luscious delicacies including ‘Kosha Mangsho’, ‘chingri’ and ‘ilish maach’, ‘Shukto’, ‘Phuchka’ and mouthwatering sweets like Rasogullas and chomchoms provide prominence to the city. The capital of West Bengal, Kolkata is also one of the four metropolitan cities of India. Being a hub of culture the ‘City of Joy’ sways in exuberance and ecstasy in October, during the auspicious occasion of Durga Puja. The people remain engrossed in various activities throughout the ten days of the festival. They engage themselves in pandal hopping, worshipping the idols of the Goddess and satisfying their hunger. The luminescence and embellishment in the city throughout the year are most praiseworthy.

One can experience and explore all the colours of life in this city. The city is prominent for its heritage, literacy and art. The legendary filmmaker, Satyajit Ray and the distinguished and eminent poet and author, Rabindranath Tagore come from this city. Renowned Bollywood actors like Rani Mukherjee and Mithun Chakraborty also belong to this city. No one can forget to mention the Prince of Kolkata – ‘Sourav Ganguly’. Some sundry other significant monuments and obelisks give this city a sign of special recognition; Victoria Memorial, Shaheed Minar, Fort William being some of them. The memorable Howrah Bridge and the captivating Vidyasagar Setu which lie on the banks of the river Ganga exhibit the splendid architecture of the city. At evening, one can glance upon the resplendent sea-green river waters, the boats returning to the shore and experience the serenity and tranquillity while in the Princep Ghat. Kolkata was the first city in India to offer underground metro services. Moreover, travelling within the city is quite convenient as one can avail traditional hand-pulled rickshaws, trams, yellow taxis and steamers. The scenery is always yellowish blue in Kolkata.

There are delights and surprises at every moment in this city. If one is taking a train to Kolkata, the fuss at the Howrah Station is sure to raise his spirits who gets attracted by the balloon sellers, the sweet shops and the florists. The city also has many museums and galleries. The Indian Museum, for instance, is the largest museum in the country and the National Library is also a place for rejuvenation for avid readers. Cathedrals (like St. Paul’s Cathedral), temples (like Birla and Kalighat Temples) and mosques are scattered throughout the city. Kolkata is a city with a soul that truly cares. One must pay a visit to The ‘Missionaries of Charity’ or other old age homes and orphanages. The greatest possible attraction of the city is the horse carriage (Tonga) ride which is a must. There is no end to amusement in this city. The colonial relic is still intact with the names of countless dense streets in Kolkata. And, it doesn’t end there.

The Alipore Zoo and Botanical Gardens are perfect sites for nature lovers. Thousands of creatures and plants are found in these sites, making Kolkata intensely exquisite. The Eden Gardens and the Salt lake Stadium are world-famous stadiums where numerous celebrated players have made records. It is also an ideal place for shopping. Tourists from around the globe visit New Market, Burr Bazar, and Maidan to shop. With the arrival of Christmas, the city is full of glee and a visit to Park Street to view the lightings and ornamentations is a compulsion for many. This city was and is also home to many freedom fighters and reformers like Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Rani Rasmoni and Raja Ram Mohan Roy.

The culture of Kolkata is strengthened when the citizens take pride to speak and converse in the regional language, Bengali. The best part of the city is its affordability. The city can be equally enjoyed by the rich and the poor. It offers great quality and services at minimal rates.

However, every rose has a thorn. With the rapid growth in industry and technology, the city is experiencing modernization. However, a major problem that this city has been facing for these recent years is pollution. Air pollution from factories and engines being the chief medium, other types of pollution are also prevalent. The increase in slums which serve as pockets of poverty and sundry other aspects perhaps makes this city no different from the other metropolitan ones. The regular traffic on roads and the huge population are other negativities that prevail. However, the positives inevitably outweigh the negatives. Kolkata is a city that cannot be compared with others. It always opens its heart and embraces me and I grasp the love that it delivers for me.

Though you will find them on most street corners, it is the stalls around College Street that are known for this savoury indulgence. Choose from a variety, including beguni or eggplants, pyaaji or onion fritters, alu or potato, and even capsicum.

Mishti In North Kolkata:  If you could float around above Kolkata on any given evening you would see thousands of Bengali sweet shops thronged with Kolkatans getting their daily dose of mishti, or sweets. Botanical Gardens:  Established in 1787, the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden is one of the oldest botanical gardens in South Asia. I am Sujata Chakraborthy. I live in a beautiful ancient city known as Kolkata. It is the capital of West Bengal. It is the 2 nd largest city & 4 th metropolitan cities of our country. It is also known as the city of joy due to its diversity & wonders.

I love my city very much and I am proud to be a part of it. It is full of life.

The city was named as “Calcutta” until 2001 but later it was named as “Kolkata” due to its Bengali pronunciation. This city was made by the British Empire. The name Kolkata represents “Kalik khetro” which is a village. Kalik khetro means the land of Goddess Kali. Comparing other cities in India Kolkata was the 1 st city to offer underground services.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Kolkata is mainly a tourist destination from people all around the world. Each year thousands of people come and visit the city to experience its rich cultural heritage. From 1773 to 1911 Kolkata was the capital of British India.

If you are planning to come to Kolkata through air you have to book the flight for “Netaji Subash Chandra Bose International Airport”. The main city is twenty kilometres away from the airport. If you are planning to come through rail you have to book tickets for Howrah or Sealdah station that connects Kolkata to other major cities in the country.

Some of the best attractions to visit in Kolkata are the Victoria Memorial, Birla Planetarium, Nicco Park, Saheed Minar, Howrah Bridge, Writer’s Building, National Library, Fort Williams, Marble Palace and Botanical Gardens.

Kolkata’s attractions also lies in its unusual public transportation system as it offer multiple modes of transport like hand puller rickshaw to older trams & metro trains to boats. The best time to visit the city is during its biggest festival which is the Durga Puja. At that time the entire city is dressed up in amazing lights & stay awake twenty four hours with big crowd migrating from various parts of West Bengal & other parts of the world.

Durga Puja takes part in the 10 th month of the year i.e. in the month of October. You must come and visit my city Kolkata to experience its cultural beauty. The uniqueness of the city lies in its people. If you are looking for a city with a soul you do not have any other choice apart from my own beautiful city Kolkata.

My City: Short Paragraph (100 Words)

My city name is Kolkata; it is the capital of the state of West Bengal. Kolkata is really rich according to history and literate. It is a very big city and it was the capital of British India. There are so many things to see in Kolkata. Kolkata is the second largest city in the whole country.

Due to its diversity and wonders, it is known as ‘City of Joy’. Kolkata has its own airport named ‘Netaji Subash Chandra Bose International Airport’. The most spectacular sites to see in Kolkata are Victoria Memorial, Writer’s Building, National Library, Saheed Minar, Howrah Bridge, Fort Williams, Birla Planetarium, and Nicco Park, etc.    

The city I Live: Paragraph (150 Words)

Dhaka is the capital city of Bangladesh, where I live. It is the biggest city and business center for the whole country. Dhaka has a huge amount of population and it is one of the most dense city in the world. It is a beautiful city after all situated in the bank of Buriganga River.

There are so many exciting places to visit in Dhaka. I love Lalbagh fort most and I have visited there for lots of time. Another interesting place is the National Memorial in Savar. National Museum, Zoo, Shishu Park, Chandrima Udyan, National Parliament, and many more things to see in the city.

Dhaka is known as the city of the mosque. A huge number of mosques are in the city because Bangladesh is a country with a Muslim majority. People are really friendly in this city and we are living here for 10 years without having a major issue.    

My City: Paragraph (200 Words)

My name is Subas and I am from Delhi. Delhi is the capital city of India and one of the largest cities. When I was a kid of 4 years, my parents moved here with their job. And I grew up here. Now I read in class seven and I love my city. Due to capital, Delhi is known as the most important city in the country.

Although India is a big country Delhi consider as the center. Delhi has so many important people in the history of India. There are huge spots to visit in the city. India Gate, Humayun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar, Red Fort, Lotus Temple, etc are the most exciting things to me.

I used to go out with my parents to enjoy the color of Delhi. I went to Chandni Chowk, you won’t believe that the color of the market. They look really attractive. I love to go there again and again. Delhi is the second-most populous city in the country with 11 Million people.

This city has the biggest railway junction in the country and the whole communication system is based on Delhi. The largest business center and huge opportunity are here.
