'Goyo' is a Somber Sequel That is a Spectacular Indictment of Idolatry

goyo ang batang heneral movie review tagalog

There are two main battles in Jerrold Tarog's  Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral . The second, of course, is the one we all know: the Battle of Tirad Pass, which history remembers as General Gregorio del Pilar's defining moment and last stand.

But the first, in which the film dwells for roughly two-thirds of its run time, is an internal battle, fought by del Pilar with himself as he relates to the people around him. Throughout its creative depiction of both these battles,  Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral   manages to tackle many of the Philippines' enduring societal ills using meticulous character development and methodical storytelling with painstaking attention to detail, punctuated by delightful flashes of humor and some of the most breathtaking frames of any Filipino movie in recent memory.

The film's first acts are dedicated to establishing and developing its titular character, his motivations, and his internal struggles. These parts of the film are set in the five months of unsuspecting peace that preceded Tirad, so there's a lot of room to explore Goyo's   egoism, his questionable style of leadership, his love interests, and his doubts. Paulo Avelino, equipped with the excellent script by Tarog and writer Rody Vera, makes this work perfectly, because he fits the bill so well. As Goyo, Avelino is everything his director   cracked him up to be : an actor who "could convey internal struggles more than the arrogance and overconfidence that Gregorio del Pilar was accused of," and who could show "doubt and fear hiding behind a mask of self-satisfaction." And his   performance is especially crucial, because to arrive at its message, the movie repeatedly asks you to question Goyo; to reflect with him and take part in his fears and doubts.

The film asks if Goyo's failures and eventual demise were not due to his ego, which was continuously inflated and aggrandized by his friends and followers.

Because the film paints such a close and nuanced portrait of Goyo (which again, is necessary for it to deliver its messages), a lot of time is spent here—in fact, almost too much, with all the brooding and romantics. The romantics in particular tend to feel vague and ineffectual, because you can't really root for Goyo in his courtship of Remedios (played by Gwen Zamora, with a fresh and almost believable command of traditional Filipino) after the film reveals his womanizing ways early on, as just another of his heroic flaws.

But thanks to the film's aesthetic brilliance—incredible cinematography and production design par excellence, as well as a powerful musical score— Goyo  never really loses your attention. It's a slow burn through the first half, but it's never boring and always beautiful.

goyo ang batang heneral movie review tagalog

The film eventually arrives at Tirad Pass, which at this point, is both del Pilar's heroic last stand and a culmination of the character that the film has been building up. But unlike the loud and violent action sequences of  Heneral Luna , this entire act feels more like a calculated, surgical set-piece battle—more tactics than big explosions. In fact, more than the battle itself, the picturesque landscape becomes the spectacle of the film's climactic moments, in which you really get to see the much-talked-about scale of the production. On top of that, this   chunk of the movie is made even more entertaining by surprising moments of pitch-perfect comic relief.

But even here—interspersed before, between, and after the gunfire—the film manages a few quiet scenes for both Goyo and the audience to think. It continues to raise questions about the main character, what he's learned, and what motivates him. Mainly, it asks if Goyo is not blindly following his president, Emilio Aguinaldo, on the basis of loyalty alone. Simultaneously, it asks if Goyo's failures   and eventual demise were not due to his ego, which was continuously inflated and aggrandized by his friends and followers. In these ways, the film is an eloquent indictment of the Filipino culture of idolatry, just as   its director intended .

Through to the end,  Goyo  is everything   it promised it would be: A somber sequel, a more reflective film than  Heneral Luna , a coming-of-age story set against war and political intrigue, and a character study of a flawed and ultimately fallible hero. It achieves what it set out to achieve, with the same brilliant command of cinema displayed by   its predecessor. But more importantly, it's also call to critical thinking—a call to question our heroes, ourselves, and how we choose to love and serve our country. Whether or not it can match the impact of  Heneral Luna depends on its audience's ability to heed those calls and ask those questions.

Goyo versus Heneral Luna

Who knows kung hindi s’ya arogante at matalino ay baka nagka- Antonio Luna Jr. a.k.a Tony or Toto pa siya. 😛 So that’s the reason masarap siyang ikuwento at panoorin, na hinusayan ng pagkakalahad ng Arikulo Uno.

Ang Goyo ay a little bit of character driven pero sa kabuan Plot Driven ito dahil hindi magiging the “Batang Heneral” si Goyo kung hindi siya naging favorite ni Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo .

The Good Points of Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral

There are  no small parts , only  small  actors

RK Bagatsing   bilang Simeon Villa

Matt Evans bilang Telesforro Carrasco

Ronnie Lazaro bilang Lt.  Pantaleon Garcia

Bret Jackson bilang US Soldier Simmons

Robert Seña bilang Don Mariano Noble Jose

Perla Bautista bilang Trinidad Aguinaldo

Karl Medina bilang Santiago Barcelona

Benjamin Alves bilang Manuel L. Quezon

At iba pa. By the way nag-cameo rin dito sina Chris Villanueva   bilang older Joven Hernando at TJ Trininad bilang older MLQ sa poster sa setting na 1935. Grabe, oo nga ano may hawig si TJ at MLQ!

  • Very strong sidekicks . America ng Marvel Cinematic universe a!).

Nakakatuwa rin talaga yung mga epic fail attempts niya to win a girl.

  • Superb mix of cast members .

Mon Confiado at Epi Quizon .

As fo dito Goyo, maiging mapanood mo sya kasi trilogy pala talaga, dugtong-dugtong.

Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral Is a Slow But Masterful Follow-Up to Heneral Luna

Jerrold Tarog displays his excellence in directing with a humanizing story of Gregorio del Pilar.

goyo ang batang heneral movie review tagalog

(SPOT.ph) Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral  was teased during the mid-credits scene at the end of the 2015 film Heneral Luna . Jerrold Tarog ’s award-winning opus about the fiery commander was a surprisingly stirring and resonant film that, for better or worse, opened the hearts and minds of the Filipino people to the possibility of a brash, arrogant, womanizing leader who’s wildly imperfect and foul-mouthed, but passionate about his love for country. In the context of 2015, Heneral Luna was incredibly apropos, almost providential, and stirred a great sense of national pride in every Filipino who saw the film.

Fast forward to 2018. Under a new political climate, Globe Studios and  Artikulo Uno Productions —which has, since the success of Heneral Luna , produced several fine and thoughtful films—gives us the story of Gregorio del Pilar ( Paulo Avelino ), the fabled boy general who rose to prominence with his courage, wartime exploits, and his womanizing. The film is a direct sequel to Heneral Luna and begins a day after Luna’s gruesome death upon the orders of President Emilio Aguinaldo ( Mon Confiado ). It follows the events of the last five months of Del Pilar’s life until his death at the Battle of Tirad Pass.

goyo ang batang heneral movie review tagalog

The film is masterfully done. The cinematography is breathtaking and brilliant, and the production design is some of the best in Philippine cinema . The actors are wonderful in their roles, and Avelino delivers a terrific performance as the baby-faced general. The only real trouble with Goyo is that it’s a film that probably didn't have to be made. Set after the most exciting and action-filled parts of Del Pilar’s life, most of the film drearily follows Goyo as he enjoys a false sense of peace following the death of Luna, and when he eventually flees with Aguinaldo as they’re pursued by the Americans.

Tarog, who co-wrote the screenplay with Rody Vera , attempts to fill the gaps with Goyo’s imagined internal struggles and his courtship of his last great paramour, Remedios Nable Jose ( Gwen Zamora ). The plot jumps from place to place because it also follows Aguinaldo’s dealings with Apolinario Mabini ( Epy Quizon ), who may well be the best character in the film. Quizon’s portrayal of the “brain of the revolution,”—easily one of the best parts of Heneral Luna —continues to be stellar and Mabini in fact delivers some of Goyo ’s best lines along with audience surrogate Joven Hernando ( Arron Villaflor ), the photographer’s assistant from the first film.

goyo ang batang heneral movie review tagalog

If Goyo succeeds in anything, it is in humanizing the lionized Del Pilar. While stories portray him as larger than life, the film grounds his exploits firmly in reality, even his womanizing nature. It’s wonderfully researched and—despite giving the disclaimer in the beginning that it uses fictional elements to deliver a cohesive narrative—gives audiences a better glimpse into the life of one of the country’s heroes. It gives its own version of events, such as sticking to the contention that it was Remedios and not younger sister Dolores who was Goyo’s true love.

Gregorio del Pilar was Aguinaldo’s favorite general, so the perspective is switched when coming from Heneral Luna . The boy general, in fact, was tasked to take down Luna but was beaten to the punch by mutinous soldiers. Early in the film, we see Del Pilar’s coldness when he orders his men to execute Luna loyalist Manuel Bernal ( Art Acuña ), revealing that the pleasantly faced general isn’t as pleasant when it comes to dealing with enemies. This sequence follows the Angelito short film that bridges the two biopics and gives a backstory to the boy, Angelito ( Tomas Santos ), who is shown being tortured for information at the beginning of the film.

goyo ang batang heneral movie review tagalog

Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral is a slow-paced story that contrasts greatly with Heneral Luna . It tries, without much success, to create some form of catchphrase with Goyo’s big brother Julio ( Rafa Siguion-Reyna ) psyching him up, “ Tandaan mo kung sino ka !” (Remember who you are!), to which he responds, “ Ang agila !” (The Eagle!). It just doesn’t compare to the crisp and utterly memorable, “ Punyeta !” of the combustible, mustachioed general.

Nothing much happens, either. There’s a barely-there courtship, a hint of political intrigue, a zarzuela , and a sad retreat from the Americans at the end that underscores how outclassed the Filipino forces were during the Philippine-American War. It equals Heneral Luna in terms of directorial brilliance , expert cinematography, and topnotch acting, but it falls short in terms of plot and greatness of ambition. This raises the question of why the film needed to have been made at all.

The answer lies at the end. As subversive as Heneral Luna was in 2015, Goyo rectifies the error of glorifying a strongman leader who would use such a cruel decree as Articulo Uno, which states that any soldier who refuses to follow an order may be killed without the benefit of a court martial. The film repeatedly and pointedly rebukes Aguinaldo for his directive to assassinate Luna, whom the Americans considered to be the Philippines’ best general.

goyo ang batang heneral movie review tagalog

The entire film, slow and plodding as it is, is a well-crafted argument against the selfishness of the men who shape this nation . Mabini narrates that it is only in fighting, in dying as a soldier, that Aguinaldo may regain his lost honor and prestige. But as the disgraced first President stares blankly at the sunset over Malacañan, he mutters that he has already given fealty to the United States. It’s a chillingly familiar refrain: A leader who seems to favor another country over his own.

Mabini laments that perhaps the Americans were right, after all—that we are but mere children trying to fight a grown man’s war. He says that Filipinos ignite with passion very quickly, but burn out just as fast . It’s a terrifying reminder that the Philippines may be doomed to follow the lead of people who put their own interests above the country’s.

Ultimately, the film’s title reveals it all. As some of the town lasses fawn over the good-looking boy general, they also talk of his improprieties with numerous women—such that anyone who falls for him and is eventually dumped is considered to be, “ na -Goyo”. The name is a warning. Don’t be fooled. Not again. Never again.

Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral (2018) – Movie Review

September 6, 2018 Kyla Marie Tardecilla Movies 0

Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral 2018 Movie Review

I honestly though this film would be a sort of carbon copy of the Heneral Luna movie. But it holds its own ground. “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral” steps up with its predecessor but different in flavor. A must watch.

The movie portrays the Filipino hero General Gregorio del Pilar .  One of the youngest generals who fought in the Philippine-American War who is nicknamed “Goyo” or “Boy General”. It depicts the coming-of-age of the young general who’ll lead an army in a revolution that was doomed to fail because of the failed leadership in its highest ranks. It brilliantly shows the many flaws that corroded the revolution and how its leaders preferred to prioritize one’s self and leisure over dignity and responsibility.

Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral is a movie that offers many lessons a true Filipino should know by heart. The things you’ll learn in this movie will make you want to better yourself for your country. Just like Goyo, you’ll better understand the worth of what you’re fighting for if you fight with love and not with hate.

What you can expect

No, this movie does not “lionize” the heroes the way our history books do. As a matter of fact, it shows how selfish and cowardly most of them are, from the lowest to the highest of ranks. It also mourns the death of Heneral Luna but at the same time it follows through a new chapter of the Philippine Revolution. You can feel hope from the remaining few who still wishes to fight and keep on with the revolution, but there’s also a darker atmosphere where it makes you question if it was all just in vain.

The battle scenes are incredible. Simple and not too over the top. The American actors who played as soldiers did a great job in showing the prowess of the American military power over the revolutionaries. You wouldn’t be able to feel hatred over them because they were not portrayed as evil unlike in other movies with the similar theme. They were simply professional soldiers who did their jobs and fought courageously alongside each other. On the other hand, you’d feel a bit disappointed and frustrated towards the Filipino troops for their lack of discipline and cowardly attempts to escape their battles each time things became difficult.

The movie, as much as possible, accurately depicts how the revolutionary leaders failed to act upon their responsibilities in hopes that they can only save whatever remaining pride they have left in a war that’s fast becoming lost. Their own flaws has trickled down to the lower ranks and morale has become low to the point some wouldn’t even volunteer to fight in an important mission with Goyo, which would later be known as the Battle of Tirad Pass .

Most historians would say that Gen. del Pilar was often labeled as Aguinaldo’s “dog” for his blind loyalty to him. He would follow Aguinaldo’s orders and each time he acted accordingly, he would be rewarded with a promotion. This explains why at such a young age he became a Brigadier General. The movie exposes Aguinaldo as a man who favored relationships over principles. And because of this, Goyo became known as a puppet among the people who knew the real intentions of Aguinaldo.

But what I liked about the movie is that it also shows Goyo’s willingness to fulfill his duties as a true general. Even if it meant sacrificing his own life. What most do not see is that Goyo was loyal not to Aguinaldo the man, but to his rank as the President. He was a soldier and loyalty is demanded for that profession no matter who your superiors are.

Cast and performances

Gregorio del Pilar is played by Paulo Avelino. I’ve got nothing bad to say about him. His appeal is actually perfect for the role. I think he’s got a good future ahead of him in the film industry.

Gwen Zamora for me was too tisay for the role of Remedios Nable Jose. It’s just so noticeable how different her looks was among the others but I guess that also adds to the uniqueness of her character. After all, her character’s appeal  needs to stand out if she’s going to be the love affair of Goyo.

Mon Confiado plays a remarkable Emilio Aguinaldo once again just like in Heneral Luna. This actor has indeed come a long way in the Filipino film industry since beginning his career in the early 90’s.

Epy Quizon’s role is the wise Apolinario Mabini. I urge audiences to listen to what he has to say in the movie.

Arron Villaflor plays Joven Hernando, an innocent assistant photographer to Miguel Laureano camera man played by Jojit Lorenzo

Carlo Aquino and Rafael Siguion-Reyna also starred as young officers Vicente Enriquez and Julian del Pilar who’s regularly at the side of Goyo in his important moments and battles. They were effective supporting characters in bringing out more color into the movie.

Ronnie Lazaro comes back as Lieutenant Garcia who earned the admiration of Heneral Luna for being brave and honorable in actions during battles. He becomes and important soldier of Goyo in his last stand.

Empress Schuck is Felicidad Aguinaldo the jealous but hopeful past girlfriend of Goyo who also is the younger sister of Emilio Aguinaldo.

An Honest Review Of 'Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral'

goyo ang batang heneral movie review tagalog

' Tandaan mo kung sino ka .'

The Long Plot, Sans Spoilers

General Antonio Luna has been killed, but the war is far from over. Known by many as "the President's favorite," Gen. Gregorio "Goyo" del Pilar ( Paulo Avelino ) is tasked to lead the Philippines' revolutionary forces against the Americans. Alongside him are his brother, Col. Julian del Pilar ( Rafael Siguion-Reyna ) and dear friend Col. Vicente Enriquez ( Carlo Aquino ).

To the Filipinos, Goyo seems to have everything under control. He is confident, loved by many (especially the ladies), and people look up to him. " Ikaw ang agila ,"   as mentioned by his brother.

But there is a side of Goyo that Filipinos do not know or have not seen. Underneath all his charm and success lies an internal struggle, and it just goes to show that in every battle, even the strongest, most idolized heroes are still human beings.

The Short, Honest Plot

Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral  is a movie that shows the human side of famed and glorified heroes.

The Main Actors And Where You Last Saw Them

Paulo avelino as goyo.

Paulo was last seen in the movie Kasal with actress Bea Alonzo . He also starred in the musical film Ang Larawan and in the romantic comedy I'm Drunk, I Love You.

Rafael Siguion-Reyna as Col. Julian del Pilar

Prior to this movie, Rafael appeared in one of this year's Cinemalaya entries, ML. It's an independent film about a soldier who served during Martial Law. He is also known for his roles in the TV series Kambal, Karibal and the movie Hari ng Tondo.

Carlo Aquino as Col. Vicente Enriquez

One of our fave '90s kids is making his way back on the big screen. He was last seen in the movie Meet Me In St. Gallen starring Bela Padilla . Carlo also had roles in the movies Throwback Today and Bar Boys.

Arron Villaflor as Joven Hernando

This 28-year-old actor last appeared in the film Mata Tapang and Spirit of the Glass 2: The Hunted. After his appearance in Heneral Luna , Arron starred in the short film Angelito, which was also directed by Jerrold Tarog .

Mon Confiado as Pres. Emilio Aguinaldo

Mon was last seen in Chito S. Roño 's film, Signal Rock . In the past years, he has taken on several roles in the TV series Maalala Mo Kaya on ABS-CBN.

Gwen Zamora as Remedios Nable Jose

This Filipina-Italian actress is known for her roles in the films Si Agimat Si Enteng Kabisote At Si Ako and Si Agimat At Si Enteng Kabisote.

Did You Know?

  • Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral is a sequel to the 2015 film Heneral Luna and is produced by TBA Studios. They're also the production company that created films such as I'm Drunk I Love You , Smaller and Smaller Circles , Sunday Beauty Queen , and Birdshot .
  • The creators, cast, and crew of the film went on a nationwide school tour. They visited Siliman University, Asia Pacific College, De La Salle University, Xavier University, and Philippine Normal University, among others.
  • Paulo Avelino attended lectures by Filipino historian Ambeth Ocampo to prepare for his role as Goyo.
  • The final movie in the war trilogy will be about President Manuel L. Quezon. In Heneral Luna and Goyo , a young Quezon was played by Benjamin Alves . The mid-credit scene in the film, however, hinted that an older Quezon will be portrayed by TJ Trinidad .
  • One of the film's main theme songs is "Susi" by indie band Ben&Ben . Director Jerrold Tarog even took part in the recording by playing the drums.

What I Think:

What I liked most about this film was its cinematography and production design. The aerial shots, specifically the ones highlighting Tirad Pass, really stood out for me. I'm not really sure if I'm making this up but I think those particular shots were filmed in such a way that it would resemble that of an eagle's perspective. Eagle = Goyo. Mind blown.

The production design was excellent. From the costumes to the props, I can say it definitely captured the period setting. Hands down to the set design crew who built most of the sets from scratch! Choosing Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar as one of the locations was also a very good call because that place is just perfect for the film's time period.

As for the characters, I think Paulo Avelino was a good fit for the role. He did a good job in delivering the right amount of authority that was required of him, especially since the personality of his character isn't strong and intimidating.

Carlo Aquino and Rafa Siguion-Reyna were also commendable for their roles. Their chemistry with Paulo was very natural, and the bromance was evident. Though the formation of their small group with Arron Villaflor was somehow forced, it was entertaining to watch the four men experience friendship and brotherhood together.

However, one of the characters that didn't resonate well with me was Remedios Nable Jose ( Gwen Zamora ). I didn't really feel that she was the love interest of Goyo. There was more passion for Goyo from the three Filipinas who were crushing on him during the fiesta.

Overall, this film excelled through its visuals and characterization but it lacked in its storytelling. Goyo was a completely different film from Heneral Luna . While Heneral Luna revolved around the themes related to authority, strength, and war, Goyo felt more emotional and light. It had more heart, in a sense that it tackled love—for a significant other, for oneself, and of course, for one's country.

What My Friend Thinks:

"Unlike its predecessor, Heneral Luna , which wanted its audience to get angry, and to fight, Goyo makes its audience feel. It showed the internal struggles experienced by Goyo, portrayed amazingly by Paulo Avelino, as well as the rest of the ensemble cast. Being a hero came with making a lot of sacrifices because with great power comes great responsibility. His love for the country is eventually what made him lose the chance with the love of his life, Remedios, something the young hero has been yearning to find all his life, evidenced by all the girls he has wooed and flirted with. It showed that sometimes, loyalty and principle don't necessarily go hand in hand, also shown by his determination to do his job, which, unfortunately, was also to be fiercely loyal to the president, Emilio Aguinaldo. Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral is a movie that shows the human side of famed and glorified heroes: the weaknesses they had, as well as the pain and heartbreak that came with what they had to do."  —Jonina

I'd Recommend It To:

Every Filipino! Goyo is a film that shows a piece of our history in a very emotional, yet artistic manner. With everything that's been going on in the country at present, this film will seriously make you think about nationalism and patriotism.

Jerrold Tarog’s ‘ Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral ‘ works better as an ensemble piece than a character study. Still, its a marvelous technical achievement.

goyo ang batang heneral movie review tagalog

The 2015 sleeper hit Heneral Luna stupefied us with an image of a burning Philippine flag and General Antonio Luna’s impassioned voice, “Bayan o sarili? Pumili ka!” It’s a rhetoric posed to the modern Filipino: will his sacrifice to fight for our nation’s freedom be in vain? The Philippine-American war is just a distant memory from the past but this film calls to arms in making a positive impact for our country today. It’s truly a life-changing event in the local cinema.

Heneral Luna can take pride on this achievement as a stand-alone biopic film but Goyo has the daunting pressure to outperform its predecessor – to present another biopic of a more known and beloved hero, and act as a connective tissue to a planned trilogy. It stays true to its roots as Luna’s ghost looms over, his name and his ideals are referred to, especially when the film illustrates the Filipinos’ tendency to worship idols and personalities.

But Goyo is not exactly a torchbearer to Heneral Luna ’s fiery nationalism and resilience. The first film ignites a spark and from there, we expect a full-blown fire. Instead, this sequel throws a curveball to viewer expectations and dampens the fire with doubt. It’s a step back to challenge one’s existing ideals.

goyo ang batang heneral movie review tagalog

Goyo picks up days after Luna’s (John Arcilla) gruesome assassination in the hands of his fellow countrymen. It’s an act of treason coyly implied to be orchestrated by President Emilio Aguinaldo (Mon Confiado). With the fighting ceased, Aguinaldo and his constituents in uncolonized Philippine regions are experiencing prolonged months of false peace, clearly unsuspecting of the Americans’ next move.

Meanwhile, one of Aguinaldo’s favorite generals, Gregorio “Goyo” Del Pilar (Paulo Avelino) has his head stuck in the clouds. He spends his time relishing his fast promotion by enjoying fiestas thrown in his honor, fooling around with his friends and chasing the affections of a beautiful maiden Remedios (Gwen Zamora). Goyo rips the textbook glorification right away and presents the titular hero as a flawed being – a PTSD-stricken soldier who doubts his leadership and principles, a reckless young lad who is torn between love and duty.

Goyo is being pulled to different directions. His brother Julian (Rafa Siguion-Reyna) feeds his ego, “Tandaan mo kung sino ka. Ikaw ang agila. Bayaning Bulakenyo. Dugong Magiting.” But what do those titles really mean to him? It’s only until he interrogates Luna’s supporter, Manuel Bernal (Art Acuña) that he realizes that he might not be a protagonist in most people’s story after all, but a henchman to Aguinaldo instead. Bernal taunts him, “Ang kaibahan natin, ikaw, naniniwala sa idolo. Kaming mga namatay at papatayin, naniniwala sa prinsipyo. Hindi ka sundalo, Goyo, isa kang aso.” Apart from this existential crisis, he is also troubled by ominous visions of his death, making him more hesitant in embracing a doomed, heroic path.

The film is driven by internal turmoil rather than the first film’s brash, strongman rule. Hence, Goyo pales in comparison with Luna, a character whose vulgar attitude alone can be a source of humor in itself. Still, this film has its distinct tone and plenty of philosophical truths to chew on, making it worthy of a second viewing. Where Heneral Luna says, “Ang taong may damdamin ay hindi alipin,” Goyo counters it with a different philosophy: “Tayo’y alipin ng sarili nating mga damdamin.”

goyo ang batang heneral movie review tagalog

History can’t be contained in a single narrative so director Jerrold Tarog chooses to present this sequel as an ensemble piece – it’s actually more satisfying if viewed under such lenses. Apart from Goyo, the POV constantly shifts among the supporting cast. In General Jose Alejandrino (Alvin Anson), we take a peek on the status of the Philippine Republic’s diplomatic negotiations with the Americans. In Joven Hernando (Arron Villaflor), the viewer’s frustration of the socio-political climate is put into light. As the fictional character in the franchise, he is mostly used as a plot device to efficiently narrate the situation of Goyo and his troops. The character still lacks pay off but hopefully he will come full circle in the next chapter.

The film also thrives in its small moments like when Remedios and Goyo’s ex-lover, Felicidad (Empress Schuck) throw shades at each other during a mango picking contest. On a different note, even the short film Angelito ( which can be watched for free online ), gives us a perspective of a small player caught in the crossfire, how life is cheap in the service of a greater cause.

It is Apolinario Mabini (Epy Quizon) who forms the narrative’s spine. Known as the ‘brain of revolution,’ he’s the all-seeing eye that delivers the juiciest tirades against Aguinaldo’s administration and the Filipino leadership in general. (Here I am, lowkey wishing that a spin-off film will be dedicated to him as well.) What is lacking is Aguinaldo’s sentiments, as his actions are mostly told in someone else’s perspective so he’s presented as a one-dimensional villain who values unwavering loyalty over true leadership. I’m hoping his rationale will be explained in the next film.

goyo ang batang heneral movie review tagalog

As an epic historical war film, Goyo juggles with many characters and their respective threads that it’s marvelous how Tarog keeps them intact within his singular vision. Seamless editing, poignant musical scoring, poetic screenplay (co-written with Rody Vera) and meticulous direction – it’s a masterclass at work. His horror background even comes into play during Goyo’s nightmarish dream sequences. Apart from Tarog’s valiant efforts, the actors’ performances are all good and reliable, the crew’s splendid production design has perfect attention to detail and Pong Ignacio’s breathtaking cinematography deftly plays with light and shadow. This film clearly has the style to match up its substance.

It all culminates in the battle of Tirad Pass. There’s no typical Hollywood stamp to it. The sequence takes time in plotting its tactics and the gunfire is kept at a reasonable amount. As it takes an anticlimactic turn in the end, viewers are served with a disappointing revelation – what was regarded as one of the monumental fights in history falls short due to inexperienced soldiers and disorganized ruling.

goyo ang batang heneral movie review tagalog

I have to admit that there’s an initial dissatisfaction after my first viewing because I came into the film wanting to be roused like how the first film did. Goyo might disappoint because its short on giving its flawed hero a redemption. His emotional journey is mainly reliant on his relationship with Remedios, and despite spending a significant time in it, the resulting love connection never went beyond physical attraction. For a coming-of-age story, this will have more impact if his relationship with a parental/model figure like Aguinaldo is fleshed out even more.

Goyo plummets to hopelessness, exposing everything that went wrong in the revolution. Mabini caps it off with a powerful monologue on the immaturity of Filipinos, a musing that transcends to the present situation where leaders are driven by their self-interests and majority of the people are content at being complacent.

Where Heneral Luna takes away our freedom, Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral strips away what’s left with our dignity and we are once again left to pick up the pieces. This sequel puts the franchise into a clearer direction. With the first two films both in the dark phase of history, I’m thrilled for the redemption that’s about to come.

4 out of 5 stars

MOVIE REVIEW: GOYO: ANG BATANG HENERAL

Alexandra louise bermudez, paul santos.

The film is the sequel to the 2015 hit historical film,  Heneral Luna , which focused on the life of an army leader Antonio Luna.  Goyo  follows the life of Gregorio del Pilar, one of the youngest generals during the Philippine-American war.

I highly recommend it as a film that speaks to our time and does justice to the Philippines not just as a body politic, but as our homeland.

2. It is a food for your eyes

goyo ang batang heneral movie review tagalog

Oo, it is a food for your eyes.

7. Napakagaling ng mga artista na bumubuo nito.

Image result for goyo cast

Watch Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral hindi ka magsisi if I had the money to watch it multiple times I would definitely watch it.

“What is the significance of the movie to our country?”

This film is about our country and our heroes. This movie is timeless no matter how many generation will pass this movie will remain an artwork and relatable to people who is watching this film. It will remain as an eye opener to us Filipinos. This film shows how Filipinos fight for their freedom from Americans. The movie was not all about Gregorio Del Pilar who is the youngest General but it is about our nation who is struggling and fighting for its freedom. Watching this film will make you a proud Filipino and will wake every Filipino’s nationalism. Every Filipino should watch this movie.

Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral

Movie review by justin alpay.

goyo ang batang heneral movie review tagalog

A superior work that teaches us to examine our heroes not as glorified beings but as people who are flawed. It brings the audience to look once more to the root of the downfall of the Filipinos. The narration was historically accurate as possible and the lessons that can be learned from the film are still relevant to our country’s present politicians. Great description of young soldiers’ internal struggles that plays between their playfulness as youth and maturity of being a leader. In terms of the production team the production design was excellent. From the costumes to the props, I can say it definitely captured the period setting.

Hands down to the set design crew who built most of the sets from scratch. Choosing their settings, is brilliantly awesome because it fits the story historically. It also promotes the culture of the Filipinos and how they live before. What I love about the film is it promotes the landscapes provided by pur country. As for the characters, I think Paulo Avelino was a good fit for the role. He did a good job in delivering the right amount of authority that was required of him, especially since the personality of his character isn’t strong and intimidating. For Paulo’s charm he fits the personality of Goyo that is loved by the ladies in his place.

Goyo Ang Batang Heneral (Buod)

Salamat!

Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral

Movie review, goyo: ang batang heneral (movie review), introduction.

Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral is a historical film directed by Jerrold Tarog.

The life of Gregorio ‘Goyo’ del Pilar, one of the youngest generals during the Philippine-American War, who fought in the Battle of Tirad Pass. He was loved by everyone, mostly girls and he was the president’s favorite.

The movie was screen played on 5th September 2018.

The setting of the movie happened at different places in the Northern region of the Philippines during the American Colonial Period around 1899.

The story begins after the death of General Antonio Luna. During that time, Gregorio del Pilar or simply Goyo have assigned a mission to capture General Luna, dead or alive. General Alejandrino, a friend of general luna was mistakenly assumed to be general luna.

During a five-month break from combat, del Pilar and his unit, including his older brother Julian and his best friend Vicente Enriquez, was tasked to capture former aides-de-camp, Manuel Bernal. They soon locate the place where manuel was hiding through his brother, Angel Bernal, the younger brother of Luna’s former aides-de-camp, which they forced to admit where his brother was hiding. They located Manuel hiding with Don Mariano Nable José’s house and torture him into joining del Pilar’s military troop. When Manuel refuses because of his loyalty to General Luna, they killed him.

During fiesta, they celebrated Goyo for becoming the Major-General of Pangasinan after completing his mission. Meanwhile, he had his personal struggles where the words of Manuel Bernabe keeps on playing in his head.

At the same time, goyo started courting Remedios Jose, the beautiful daughter of Don Mariano.

Gen. Alejandrino was sent by pres. Emilio aguinaldo to Manila to negotiate with General Elwell Otis and General Arthur MacArthur Jr., who reject his proposal.

The filipinos was caught off guard when the americans invaded their territory. The filipinos started a long walk to the north part of the philippines to escape the americans without food and water as they are not welcomed at the places they stopped over.

The next day, the Americans came and unable to make a defense but a filipino traitor help them find the secret path leading to the top of the mountain. By that, filipinos was quickly overrun, killing a lot of filipino soldiers.

Goyo, returned to the place where he read the letter of remedios but he was shot by the americans and died.

After knowing the death of del pilar, the filipino soldiers quickly surrendered.

Aguinaldo is captured by the americans effectively ending the war. He is held as a prison and he was visited by Manuel Quezon.

Mabini on the other hand, was exiled where he wrote how Aguinaldo failed as an ineffective leader of the Philippines. While, Remedios receives a letter from del Pilar.

At the ending, Joven is rescued by Kiko and Eduardo. It shows Aguinaldo in 1935 and his running mate, watch as his presidential campaign posters are replaced by those of Manuel Quezon’s.

What i like about this movie is that even though i’ve watched it for about three times, I still got the same feeling as how i felt the first time watching it.

The cinematography was absolutely on point plus the color grading on each scene makes the movie different from other typical filipino movies. For me, every scene was given a quality time, attention and effort while making it so to be honest, there’s nothing to be disliked on this movie.

67089144_483457025747485_4203274103622205440_n

I’ve learned a lot of lessons watching this movie not only on the history part but also values and wisdom. The famous saying, “Being a hero came with making a lot of sacrifices because with great power comes great responsibility” while the movie breaks the stereotyping that all heroes are perfect but instead the movie shows that heroes are human beings to, they make mistakes and have flaws.

The remarks of each character during the movie has a lot of teachings. The line that struck me the most was Apolinario Mabini’s line “Kaya na ba ng mga Pilipino na marinig ang katotohanan ng hindi napipikon?”  his line emphasize on our immaturity as a nation.

Dm5IhbsVAAAvXqC

Moreover, watching the film made me tear up as i felt melancholy when the filipino lost the battle at tirad pass and the emotions being shown by the actors when goyo died really had me struck.

Furthermore, i also like how each character played their roles very well as they deliver their lines with emotions. I like how Paulo Avelino (Goyo), Carlo Aquino ( Vicente Enriquez), Rafa Siguion-Reyna (Julian del Pilar) acts. It show their great chemistry making the acting more natural.

08302018-goyo-main-02

The ambiance and set where they choose to shoot makes the film better. The scenes feels like you are there with them when it happens in 1899. The official sound track used added a spice in the movie. The set design and costumes was great showing the efforts of the production team when making them. So shout out to the production team for creating this beautiful masterpiece, you guys deserve more recognition!

CONCLUSION:

I highly recommend everyone to watch this movie. You will learn how filipino stand for their dignity and principles during the american colonization and how they lost the battle. You will gain a deeper knowledge about our history that we as a filipino should know. The values that you will get from this movie can be applied on our country up to this day. I hope filipinos can learn from this, to choose the right leader who will stand for country effectively and so by that we can finally see a progress in our country. After watching, it will make you discern on how patriotic you are as a person. So overall, this movie is 10/10.

[OPINION] What ‘Goyo’ teaches us about leadership, youth, and patriotism

Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral  was frustrating. But you have to watch it and be frustrated too.

Let me explain: two days ago, I came into the cinema hopeful, positive, and excited to watch Goyo . Two hours later, I came out of the cinema tired, sad, and disappointed.

I thought the movie, the story, the character was slow, shallow, self-indulgent, and indecisive. Unlike Heneral Luna (which I thought was an epic tale of bravery and passion), Goyo didn’t inspire or touch me as much.

But two days after watching (yes, I was still thinking about the movie in the days that followed), I had a eureka moment. I realized that I wasn’t really frustrated with the movie. I was frustrated with the reality of heroism and leadership. (READ:  ‘Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral’ review: Stripping the hero )

Slow movie

First, I felt that Goyo, the hero and the movie, was slow. And rightly so.

Years ago, I thought the process of heroism and “making a difference” was a sprint full of milestones and successes. But the older I got, the more I realized that that process was really a marathon – a long marathon with no signposts, no landmarks, no celebrations. Just a slow movement forward with lots of uncertainty, fear, and waiting.

The battle at the end was not the 300-esque highlight reel of epic battle scenes. It was a bunch of frustrating decisions, careless mistakes, and cowardly acts, slowly building up to the tragic finale. Welcome to the real world.

Humanizing the protagnist

Second, I thought that Goyo was incredibly shallow and self-indulgent. I almost hated him.

But the reality is that many of our heroes and leaders are. They’re vain. They’re motivated by their ego and self-interest. Some of them are shallow, bias-driven, or incompetent. In fact, many of them are womanizers – like our Gregorio.

I found it easy to root for Heneral Luna because he fought for the “right” side so indignantly he was almost a saint. His gruesome martyr’s death only purified him further.

But Goyo – with his women, his cocky smirks, his false sense of security, his inability to truly “lead” his men – made him a real person. The “Batang Heneral” theme placed emphasis on the “Bata” rather than the “Heneral.” (READ: [OPINION] Youth as troublemakers )

Yet, in spite of his faults, there were still moments where he stood up to shine, proving that maybe there are no heroes, just ordinary people pushing themselves to accomplish heroic acts.

(I’m not saying we should tolerate incompetence, selfishness, or womanizing in leadership. I just think Goyo did a good job of showing people how incompetent, selfish, or vain our “heroes” can be, if we ever venture to look more deeply.)

Anti-climactic ending

Third, we all knew he would die at the Tirad Pass, but he died so matter-of-factly, it was almost anti-climactic.

Our history was built (partly) on legendary deaths: the Gomburza priests executed gruesomely, Jose Rizal being shot at Bagumbayan, Ninoy Aquino bloodied on the tarmac. This one was not legendary.

The lesson for me here is: if you want to create real change in this country, don’t wait for a heroic death or one big act of courage in crisis that people will eventually worship you for. It may never happen. Instead, aim for everyday small acts with positive effects that can snowball into a lifetime of accomplishment.

The reality of heroism is that most of the real heroism that happens nowadays may never be recognized. Think of the nameless doctors, nurses, scientists, policymakers, and businessmen who have touched lives, formed communities, and created ripples of change.

They’re heroes not because they want to be heroes but because they act and do.

In conclusion, watch Goyo not because you want to see the legendary heroism of one of the youngest generals in Philippine history. Watch it because you want to see the reality behind the facade.

Watch it because, when we’re seeing only two sides, Goyo asks us to think again. Bad or good. Villain or hero. The movie makes you uncomfortable by keeping you suspended in limbo.

Watch it because we are all Goyos in a way: young, foolish, idealistic, uncertain, selfish, imperfect, vain, and incompetent.

After all, the first step in becoming a better person or leader is recognizing one’s own weaknesses and faults. – Rappler.com

The heat only makes the hero more suave in “Goyo: The Boy General,” a serviceable biopic centering on Gregorio del Pilar, who fought United States forces during the Philippine-American War.

The film, the second in a planned trilogy about that conflict ( “Heneral Luna,” the first, was released in 2015), follows Goyo (Paulo Avelino), as del Pilar was known, as he matures from woman-chaser to resolute leader. Even at two-and-a-half hours there’s a lot of skimming over details and more than a little grandstanding, as well as numerous languid shots of the dashing 24-year-old general and his swooning devotees. “He leaves a heartbroken girl in every town,” one admirer helpfully informs another.

Given the straightforward script, Mr. Avelino’s performance is as understated as perhaps possible, while Gwen Zamora, as del Pilar’s main love interest, Remedios, helps generate some romantic tension as the final fight approaches. That extended, well-staged recreation of the 1899 Battle of Tirad Pass wraps things up on an especially strong note as enemies attack, bullets whiz by and del Pilar finds his courage.

Jerrold Tarog, the director, follows the same game plan as he did in “Heneral Luna,” with sweeping music and proud speeches (he wrote the script with Rody Vera). There are also some nice images of the lush Philippine countryside and of del Pilar’s troops. For sure, there’s quite a bit of prettiness here. In this war, apparently, it was just as important to look good as to fight well.

Not rated. In Filipino, Tagalog, English and Spanish, with English subtitles. Running time: 2 hours 35 minutes.

  1. Goyo Ang Batang Heneral Movie Review

It's a slow burn through the first half, but it's never boring and always beautiful. The film eventually arrives at Tirad Pass, which at this point, is both del Pilar's heroic last stand and a culmination of the character that the film has been building up. But unlike the loud and violent action sequences of Heneral Luna, this entire act feels ...

(SPOT.ph) Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral was teased during the mid-credits scene at the end of the 2015 film Heneral Luna. T he cineaste in me had some trepidation about viewing "Goyo," the new film titled after the nickname of General Gregorio del Pilar, as it comes on the heels of the box office hit "Heneral Luna," about that irascible General Antonio Luna who, like del Pilar, fought under President Emilio Aguinaldo (played by Mon Confiado) in the Filipino-American War.

Coming after Heneral Luna, the new Jerrold Tarog film, Goyo, Ang Batang Heneral, once again plays revisionist history lesson; challenging us to revisit our notions of heroism and nationalism, while re-examining the reasons we've elevated certain historical figures on the pedestal of national hero.
