The end of school is the time of year most teachers dread. Kids are tired. Teachers are tired. There are 180,000 things on everyone’s mind. The last thing ANYONE wants to do is continue with the same routines. We all need a little break from the monotony! I love the end of the year because it is a golden opportunity to review the year’s work with some serious projects and group work. My favorite activity? Students as teachers.

Students as Teachers

My fourth-grade students had a BLAST the other day teaching our third graders a preview of what they’d learn in fourth grade. They exploded bags, dropped eggs, created an inviting restaurant for the perfect party, decorated a beautiful pet shop, and used motivating texts to inspire serious goal-setting.

They produced anchor charts, graphic organizers, student work pages, rubrics, and I-Can statements galore. It was a rewarding experience and an excellent review. Not to mention that it freed up the third-grade teacher for about an hour and gave me a chance to enjoy my students’ leadership skills.

The whole process of preparing students as teachers took about two weeks. Everything was student planned and designed, and covered topics from throughout the year. Here is the basic timeline of how we prepared.

Day 1: Brainstorming

I split my 24 students into four groups—math, science, reading and writing. I chose students who are really strong in each subject to be group leaders. The rest I placed according to their personality and strengths. I introduced the basic concepts of teaching, over which the kids went CRAZY! They were so excited about being in control!

We talked about the importance of choosing a topic we had learned in fourth grade. The kids used their journals to figure out what they’d like to teach. They spent time brainstorming and coming up with a proposal. I showed them the rubric and timeline to make sure they understood the expectations.

Day 2: Proposals

I checked in with each group’s progress. Writing knew exactly what they wanted—they love animals, so they wanted to make a pet shop. I asked them to come up with a proposal for what students might do. Reading was full of very ambitious kids—they wanted to focus on goal setting. Math decided they wanted to plan a party but weren’t quite sure how to tie it to the curriculum.

We worked together to come up with the idea of analyzing the cost. They’d make decisions on what to order, figure out total cost, and divide it by three people hosting and paying for the party. Science wanted to do something on changes but didn’t quite know what. I remembered a super fun lab I’d done in the past with physical and chemical changes, and showed them some ideas online. They were thrilled!

Day 3: Getting Organized

The goal of the day was to write lesson objectives, design a graphic organizer, and come up with the basic flow for each group’s lesson. I gave them about half an hour to work then told them I would be checking in on their progress. Some of the teams were having NO problems getting going, while others struggled a bit. I spent time with each group, asking guiding questions and helping them focus on what they would be doing. Reading decided to do text structure with an article on goal setting, then move into creating goals. Writing decided to do a persuasive letter, with an emphasis on finding solid reasons for their parents to let them get pets from the pet store. Science decided to run labs to explore the difference between physical and chemical changes.

Day 4: Research

I told students they couldn’t teach something they didn’t understand. Each group was responsible for finding a minimum of four facts or ideas related to their topic.

Day 5: Lesson Planning

I gave students their planning template. They had to turn in a lesson plan including a graphic organizer and some work required.

Day 6: Teacher-Tested

I took the worksheets students turned in and printed them out. Then I taught each lesson (exactly as it was prepared) to the whole class. Some of it was awkward, some of it took FOREVER, and some was super fun. (Have you ever told a room full of kids to chuck an egg on the floor? It’s a trip!) After each lesson, we had a class debriefing where we talked about what went well and what could be better.

Day 7: Adjustment

Students regrouped and adjusted their plans. They also came up with rubrics to use to grade their students.

Day 8: Trail Run

One of my lovely team members brought her students in so we could try our lessons. Writing and math went well and needed no adjustments. Science discovered they needed anchor charts to teach from before expecting students to analyze the results of the labs. Reading was a complete flop. They had planned way too much and it was pretty boring! Luckily, my teammate had a couple of books about goal setting, so the reading team did a last second change-up. They worked together to come up with a new plan—analyzing the theme of the story and then setting goals. It turned out to be great!

Day 9: Last Minute Prep

I-Can statements went on chart paper, anchor charts were finalized, work pages and rubrics were polished, and group roles were ironed out. They did a couple trial runs to see how it would go.

Day 10: Teaching Day

One awesome third grade teacher volunteered as tribute and brought her kids, divided into four groups, to our room. My fourth graders were set up in separate parts of the room, ready to go.

Before we began, I laid out the expectations for the third and fourth graders. Then I set the timer for 16 minutes, and off they went. It was so fun to see how incredibly engaged the third graders were! The fourth graders really excelled as leaders. I enjoyed seeing how some of the students I would not have expected to be outgoing really put themselves out there and took ownership over their project.

The third grade teacher and I walked around the room and observed (with only occasional help given). The younger kids rotated through all four stations in the room, working hard in each one. After they left, the fourth graders used the rubrics they’d created to grade their students. They were so pleased with themselves!

Students as teachers was a super fun, low-prep activity. It took up quite a bit of that extra end-of-year time in a meaningful way. It allowed me to see some of the third graders that may be in my class next year, and let them have a small preview of what life will be like in fourth grade.

There were a couple of things I would do differently next time we do students as teachers. I only allotted 16 minutes per station, worrying about lessons dragging on and kids becoming disengaged. However, it was too short of a time, especially for everything my fourth graders had planned. Next time, I would also have my “teachers” plan some extension activities for early finishers.

My one big takeaway? Sometimes it’s good to sit back and let the kids shine. They’ll surprise you.

Teachers teach, coach, and mentor during the most important days of our lives. They ensure we have a safe environment to learn, and always inspire us to achieve our goals. Some believe that education is mostly encouragement, and if you have a teacher who encourages you, you are blessed!

Some teachers have a gentle approach, which all of us love, while some are stringent and leave no room for error when it comes to crucial topics. A celebration of strength and resilience this World Teachers’ Day

According to Google Trends, over the last 18 months, searches for “missing my students” increased 150%, and searches for “bulletin board ideas” dropped to an all-time low in April 2020.

Some of the top questions searched were things like “How can educators support students who are struggling with distance learning?,” “How can students and teachers build a useful virtual classroom community?” and even “What does remote learning mean?” Clearly, educators — at home or in the classroom — have had plenty of challenges. So for this World Teachers’ Day, we put together a place where you can see other education and learning-related searches and trends from the past year.

Despite the many questions, I’m inspired by the strength of our incredible global educator community. On this World Teachers’ Day we’re sharing stories of how they found a way to teach during a year that has taught us so many lessons.

Ann Kerr — Administrator, California, USA

Like many districts around the world, Ann saw an increase in stress across staff and students. To help students who were struggling, she tutored in the evenings after school to help students navigate the changes. Her efforts helped one student not only understand how to use Google Classroom but also their assignments, and the student raised their grades above passing before the end of the year. Even though they had only met through Google Meet, they made a real connection.

Vanessa Almeida — K-12 Public School Teacher and Pedagogical Coordinator, Amazonas, Brazil Vanessa started preparing her school for online teaching in 2017, years before the pandemic — but nothing could have prepared her for what was to come. She set out to create a more connected and efficient usage of the technology resources; at one point she worked for 48 hours straight to make sure all students had Google Workspace for Education accounts. This meant that her school continued its classes uninterrupted during the transition from face-to-face to remote learning. Even today, Vanessa offers her lunch break to teach students on various online tools.

Once a stranger to remote learning, Suyanti spent her summer break going back to school herself. She took online courses and webinars to push herself to be prepared for whatever the upcoming academic year would bring. She learned about new online tools and how to use them to support her students from afar. After completing these courses, Suyanti was able to come back to the unknown with confidence. This extended to her students and the second wave of remote learning was not only easier, but more collaborative. Aside from lesson plans, she focused on engaging students with critical thinking, enhancing creativity and promoting effective communication by using collaborative tools like Google Slides and Pear Deck.

Janice MacRae — Head Teacher, Highland Council, Scotland Janice and the Muirtown Primary School in Inverness, Scotland knew it would be important to maintain extracurriculars no matter what the circumstances, given how beneficial they are for kids. Every year, they host the “Muirtown’s Got Talent” show, which usually takes place at school with in-person voting. The curtains still rose this year, but on a very different stage: The performances were recorded and uploaded to a Google Site, and parents voted via Google Forms (which actually garnered more participation).

How to Make a Teacher's Day

Your teachers work hard to make you a successful student and sometimes it can feel good to recognize their hard work. Though the official World Teacher’s Day celebrating teachers around the globe is on October 5th, you can also choose to make your teacher’s day more special by using positive words and positive actions any day of the week.

Using Words

Step 1 Compliment your teacher on her positive attitude and energy.

Try to be specific when you compliment your teacher so it feels like you are not just throwing around empty words. For example, if your teacher gave you more time to complete an assignment due to an illness, you may compliment her by saying: “I appreciate that you were willing to be flexible about the due date and I feel like you have a positive attitude toward teaching that benefits me as a student.”
You may also compliment your teacher in a more general way by commenting on her teaching style and her approach to teaching in the classroom. For example, you may say: “Thank you for coming into class every day with enthusiasm and excitement. You are great at breaking down difficult concepts so I can understand them clearly. I really appreciate your teaching style and I feel like I am learning important, useful things in your classroom.”

Step 2 Create a presentation on how great your teacher is with your classmates.

In your presentation, list the ways in which your teacher inspires you as a student and the ways in which she brings learning and fun into the classroom. Have your classmates each contribute at least one to two reasons why your teacher is great so that you can present a long list that will surely brighten your teacher’s day.

Step 3 Tell your teacher’s superior about how great she is.

It may be helpful to describe a specific situation where you felt your teacher went above and beyond. For example, may be your teacher worked with you after class to learn a difficult math concept that you struggled with so that you could pass the upcoming exam. You could tell the superior that you feel like this shows how dedicated the teacher is to her students and how the teacher sets her students up for success.

Step 4 Write your teacher a letter of appreciation.

Think about a specific time when your teacher has impacted you in a positive and thoughtful way. This could be something small, like asking how you’re doing, or something more significant, like giving you an extension on your deadline for an assignment. You can ask your parents to help you write the letter or try to do it on your own.

Using Actions in the Classroom

Step 1 Decorate your teacher’s door with your classmates.

Be sure to keep the decorations age appropriate and non-offensive, as the door will be exposed to the rest of the school and be seen as representative of your teacher’s class.

Also, ask for permission before decorating the door at all. Ask your principal, not your teacher or that will give the surprise away! You may not be allowed to stay in class after school or paste things on school property; some schools find that offensive even if it was not meant to be. So be sure to ask the principal first. You do not want to get in trouble when you were only trying to express gratitude for a teacher! If you are not given permission, do not worry. And never, never go ahead and do it anyway; that will only cause your authorities (including your teacher!) to not be impressed with you at all. You can make your teacher's day some other way.

Step 1 Help your teacher with classroom chores.

You may also want to take it on yourself to organize a cleaning schedule with the other students and surprising your teacher with the schedule. You can do this for the feeding schedule for the class pet. Taking the lead on classroom duties can help to reduce your teacher’s stress level and brighten her day.

Step 2 Offer to go first for a class presentation.

Do this even if you are not absolutely certain you know the answer or have the right solution to the teacher’s question. Participating verbally in discussions will show your teacher you are engaged and make her feel as though she is reaching at least one student in the room.

Using Actions in the World

1 Make your teacher a thoughtful handmade card. Nothing makes a teacher’s day like a beautiful, handmade card telling them how great they are. Spend some time the day before school and get crafty. Use colored paper, glitter, and colorful markers to draw a picture of your teacher or decorate a message that lets your teacher know you think she is awesome. You can then present the card to your teacher as a thoughtful gift. Don't make your card anonymous unless you are shy but still want your teacher to know he or she is awesome! However, a teacher would like to thank you for your card and not embarrass you.

Teacher for a Day: Improving Classroom Behaviors

INTRODUCTION: Some students perform poorly because of self-defeating behaviors and attitudes of which they are unaware. I decided to have my students assume the role of teacher for a day so that they could see how students behave in a classroom from a teacher’s point of view. I hypothesized that observing their classmates’ behaviors and attitudes would give them insights into their own, providing a motive to adopt new, more supportive habits of success. In fact, this was exactly what happened.

In the ESL class in which I did this activity, I had 20 students and the class met for 2 hours and 30 minutes twice a week. I allotted 3 class meetings and 40 minutes of another to complete the process. This activity can be used in any course to help students gain self-awareness of positive classroom behaviors and/or attitudes. An additional benefit is that students learn how to present to a class. I also experienced an improved relationship with my students seemingly because of their new-found empathy for the instructor’s challenging role.

SUPPLIES/SET UP:

Class textbooks
HANDOUT #1: Teaching Guidelines (appended below)
HANDOUT #2: Homework Assignment (appended below)

DIRECTIONS:

1. Provide students with HANDOUT #1: Teaching Guideline. Explain that they will have the opportunity to be “the teacher” for 20 minutes during an upcoming class. For my students, presentations took place before the mid-term exam. Each student was assigned to review one grammatical point or writing organization rule and have the whole class participate in an activity they prepared.

2. Create a schedule of when and what topic each student will teach.

3. Before each student teaches, remind him/her to observe students’ attitudes and classroom behaviors while teaching. Ask each student-teacher to make notes about appropriate and inappropriate classroom behaviors.

4. After all students have had their turn as teacher, provide students with HANDOUT #2: Homework Assignment, which asks them to write about their experience of being the teacher for a day.

EXPERIENCES:

In the beginning of the semester when I told the students that they would be asked to be the teacher for 20 minutes, many students gave me a big “Oh, no!” response. They said that they did not want to stand in front of their classmates because they would be too nervous. I told them that I understood their fear because I had experienced that same fear when I first became a teacher and sometimes in the beginning of a new semester, I still get a little nervous because I do not know what kind of students I may have in the new classes. They looked very surprised when they heard that I would get nervous. I decided to help ease their anxiety by asking students to come to the front of the classroom to help me with some assignments or explain some grammatical points or writing rules every class meeting. By the time they had to be the “teachers,” they had all been in the front of the classroom either to help me explain a lesson or to assist me with an activity.

When it was their time to be the “teachers,” they seemed to be less nervous even though a few students still had trouble starting their lessons. I acted as a TA (teacher’s assistant) and asked the student-teacher what the lesson was about or if s/he needed me to get any supplies. The student usually started talking to me and eventually started talking to the whole class. I tried not to help the “teacher” too much, but I did step in to say something when s/he had trouble continuing the lesson. Compared to presenting information, students seemed to have an easier time conducting an activity they had prepared. They walked over to small groups or pairs and talked to individuals to make sure people were participating in the activity. It seemed to me they were less threatened when they were not in front of a large group of people and were able to see who needed their assistance.

Since I had told the whole class that these teaching sessions would be the only opportunity for them to review the materials before the midterm examination, the students paid attention while they were being taught by their classmates, and they actually asked more questions of those student teachers than they usually ask me when I am the teacher. They also pointed out the mistakes that the student teachers made, and the whole class would try to figure out ways to make corrections. I believe the reason that the students felt comfortable being taught by their classmates was that I had asked every student in the class to help me with an in-class assignment before this activity. I also had given the students numerous pair and group projects during which they helped one another. Therefore, they were already accustomed to learning from their classmates.

Some student teachers enjoyed the activity so much that they did not want to stop being the teacher after 20 minutes. I told them that they were welcome to assist me any time in the future. The other students seemed to be comfortable being taught by their classmates, asking many questions and giving a lot of feedback to the student teachers. In addition to helping students recognize classroom behaviors and attitudes, it was also an effective activity to review materials and promote student participation.

All of the students stated in their homework writing assignments that they had learned something important about themselves. One student said that she had never wanted to participate in group or pair work because she had always thought that her electronic English dictionary could give her all the help she needed. However, after seeing how some students seemed to have learned from one another during the activity that she conducted, she became willing to participate in group or pair work. Another student came to me and said that he had no idea how obnoxious he had been because he had always complained about how boring or meaningless were some of the activities I had given in class and he had often interrupted me during lectures.

Almost all of the students stated in their writing assignments that they could see some attitudes or behaviors that contributed to their bad grades. Those attitudes or behaviors included sleeping or being almost half asleep in class, interrupting the teacher, not participating in pair or group work, talking to classmates during a lecture, and making negative comments such as: “Do we have to do it?” or “That’s too much homework!” They realized that some attitudes or behaviors could be disruptive in a class. A student also said that it was embarrassing to see a classmate behaving badly when he was the “teacher” because he had displayed the same immature behavior in class at one time.

After this activity, more than half of the class said that they liked being a teacher because they felt they could explain the lessons the way their classmates would understand. They also said that by preparing the lessons themselves and having the opportunity to “teach” the lessons, they had a better understanding of the materials studied. After this activity, I noticed a big difference in students’ attitudes and their classroom behaviors. They rarely complained about class or homework assignments, and they seemed to enjoy participating in class activities much more. Further, they stopped interrupting me or sleeping in class anymore. They also asked me more questions during my lessons, which shows me that they learned the importance of communicating with the teacher to get the most out of a class.

This activity truly was an eye-opening experience for many students. They saw themselves from a teacher’s point of view for the first time and were able to recognize some of the self-sabotaging behaviors they exhibited. It was also great that many students realized that they have the power to choose to replace harmful habits with some of the positive attitudes and behaviors so that they can be successful students.

LESSON LEARNED:

I learned that many students are afraid of standing in front of their classmates, let alone conducting a lesson or an activity. Although I tried to ease their fear by asking them to help me with my lessons before they had to do theirs, the next time I conduct this activity, I may give students the option of pairing up with a partner to co-teach. I think it would be more effective for some people to work with a partner in the front of the classroom, conducting the lesson together so they do not feel alone or intimidated. I also learned that many students like to be given responsibility for important tasks. After this activity, many students told me that they felt more useful and productive when they were the “teacher.” They asked to assist me in my future classroom activities so they could actively participate.

An important lesson I learned about being an instructor is that I am not there to “teach” students as much as to guide them so they can learn to be responsible for their own learning process and outcomes. I also realized that I like to create activities for my classes because I see myself when I look at my students. After all, I used to be an ESL student myself, and I did not always have a positive attitude towards my studies or constructive habits in the classroom. I believe that sharing my own experience with my students made the gap between my students and me smaller. As a result, they feel more comfortable to come to me for assistance or advice.

SUPPORT MATERIALS:

HANDOUT #1: Teaching Guidelines

1. Prepare a 20 minute lesson to teach your classmates. I will provide topics.

2. Use your own words to explain the lesson rather than reading from the book.

3. You would be wise to rehearse being the teacher with some of your classmates or friends before the day that you are the “teacher.”

4. On the day that you are the “teacher,” please wear nice but comfortable clothes and remember to bring whatever you will need for your 20-minute lesson.

5. Have eye contact with your students while you teach.

6. Ask students questions to check on their understanding of the materials.

7. Walk around the classroom to make sure everyone participates in the activity you have prepared.

8. Observe students’ attitudes and behaviors while you are teaching.

HANDOUT #2: Homework Assignment

Write an essay about your experience of being the teacher. Here are some questions which might help you with this assignment.

1. Recall the attitudes or classroom behaviors that you observed while teaching. Which ones do you think will contribute to student success? Which to student failure?

2. Do you possess the same or similar attitudes and/or behaviors which you observed? Please explain.

3. If there are some attitudes or behaviors which prevent you from being a successful student, what do you plan to do to change those habits?

4. What did you learn about yourself, your classmates, and/or your teacher from this experience?

You might be a full-time classroom teacher who needs to take an unexpected day off and wants to keep their class busy and engaged in your absence.

In that case, you’ll need to devise straightforward yet stimulating activities for an off-the-cuff lesson plan.

Or, perhaps you’re that hardy breed of wandering samurai known as the substitute teacher. Either way, it pays to have a couple of fun, preplanned lesson plans and writing tasks quick to hand in case of emergencies.

Most battle-worn subs have a few rabbits they can pull from their magic hat immediately as and when the occasion calls for it. But it’s always good to mix things up a little and add a new trick or two to that trusty old bag of tricks.

In this article, we’ll explore seven fun writing tasks that promise to keep a room full of unfamiliar students equal parts engaged and entertained.

Daily Quick Writes For All Text Types

1. Pick and Mix

This activity requires a little preparation ahead of time. Still, your energy investment will be more than justified by the number of activities you can pull out of your hat instantly when needed.

To prepare for this activity, you’ll need to compile a list of well-known but seldom-used words. For example, while most 14-year-olds will know words such as missile , sorcerer , and miniature , they will most likely rarely use them in their writing.

The words you choose for your list will depend on the age of the students you’ll be teaching. As a sub, you might not always know what age group you’ll be teaching, so it’s worth preparing a few different lists for different age groups in advance. There are innumerable suitable word lists for each grade, a quick Google search away.

Once you have your word lists, type them and print them off. Cut out each word and place it in a small drawstring bag or similar container.

Then, when you need a spontaneous activity, pull out your bag and ask a student to pull out three words at random. The students must write a poem that incorporates the three chosen words.

There are many ways to adapt this central idea.

You can challenge the students to use their words to write a specific type of poem, e.g. sonnet, calligram, haiku, etc. Or, you might impose a time limit for the students to complete the task, e.g. 1 minute, 5 minutes, etc.

Perhaps you can ask them to collaborate in small groups to produce a shared writing piece. You can also ask them to choose different numbers of words or write in other genres, such as a short story or a dialogue.

The number of variations on this activity is limited only by your imagination.

2. Mystery Meal Review

In this activity, students will be challenged to use language to conjure up a mirage of a meal in the minds of their readers.

First, ask the students to think about the best meal they have ever eaten. Tell them to close their eyes to engage their imagination better. Instruct them to think about what they ate during that meal. Ask a series of rhetorical questions to help trigger their memories and inspire their creativity.

What vegetables did they have?
What type of meat was there?
Was the food roasted? Fried? Boiled?
Did they have sauces or seasonings?
What was the texture of the food like in their mouths? Crunchy? Creamy? Melt in the mouth
What colors were on their plate?
How did the food smell?

Once they’ve had time to quietly reflect on the best meal they’ve ever eaten, it’s time to write about it. However, the twist in the tale here is that they cannot mention any of the food items they write about by name.

Instead, the students must describe the meal and its component items in such detail that the reader will be able to tell what they ate without the writer mentioning the food by name.

To make things a little easier, the students can use generic terms such as vegetable, meat, dessert, etc., but they must not use specific nouns such as chicken, carrots, gravy, etc.

This will challenge the student to use their powers of description to convey the details of their food to the reader. They’ll have to use sensory details appealing to the senses of sight, smell, taste, touch, and even sound.

When the students have finished writing their reviews of their best-ever meals, they can swap their descriptions with other classmates, who will then try to deduce the ingredients of their meal.

The winning writer will be the one with the most readers who correctly figure out the main elements of the writer’s meal.

3. Rewrite the Past

This activity is an excellent way to encourage the students to exercise their creativity while also instilling in the students the structure and features of recount writing .

To prepare for this activity, you’ll need to gather up a few old photographs to serve as visual stimuli for this writing activity. You can simply print these from the Internet. Alternatively, you can gather up a few props such as old postcards , an old-fashioned hat, a pair of spectacles, some old coins, etc.

Whatever the props used, students will employ them as a jumping-off point to kickstart their creativity as they write an imaginative first-person recount.

You can leave the background to their recount entirely up to the student and how they respond to the prompt. If you prefer, you can provide some context to the stimuli used, for example, in the form of some historical background or detail on who is in the photograph.

Either way, it will be incumbent upon the student to respond creatively to whatever prop you provide, all while considering the structural conventions and features of the recount text type.

If you wish to add a competitive element to the exercise, you might award a small prize for the most original, the funniest, etc.

4. Alternate Endings

Begin this writing activity by asking the students to name their favorite books or movies. Through a class vote, find the overall class favorite to base the activity on.

It doesn’t matter if some class members haven’t seen the movie (or read the book). You will start by retelling the story of the movie or book as a class. Pay particular attention to the ending. Make sure the class as a whole agrees on how the story comes to a climax and resolution.

Once this has been established, it’s time for students to kick their own pens into gear to write an alternative ending for the tale.

Encourage students to be as wacky and outlandish as possible. They can subvert the movie or book’s genre by tacking on a horror ending onto a comedy or vice versa, for example.

When students have completed their rewrite of the ending, encourage them to share their efforts with the class by reading their work out loud.

5. Dialogue Reconstruction

Learning to write dialogue well is an effective way to breathe life into storytelling.

It takes practice and careful observation to develop the finely tuned ear required to write it well. This activity helps students to begin this process by carefully reconstructing a dialogue they overheard or participated in.

To get the ball rolling in this activity, first review the specifics of punctuating dialogue correctly. Do a little research to get up to speed if you are unsure about these rules. But, in brief, here are five of the most important of these rules:

Introduce dialogue with a comma, e.g. She said , “The hat makes your head look small.”
Use a comma when a dialogue tag follows a quote, e.g. “The hat makes your head look small ,” she said.
Place periods and commas within closing quotations, e.g. “ It’s the hat that’s big, not my head . ”
Use single quotes when using quotes within dialogue, e.g. “My mother told me, ‘ Your head is a perfect size, darling. ’ ”
Mark a change of speaker by starting a new paragraph, i.e. skipping a line. For example,

“The hat makes your head look small, ” she said.

“ It’s the hat that’s big, not my head,” he replied.

Technicalities out of the way, now it’s time for the students to get reconstructing!

Ask the students to think of a conversation they’ve had today. It might have been a trivial conversation they had with a parent over breakfast or with a friend or sibling on the way to school. Maybe it was some small talk with a worker in a shop. It doesn’t matter.

The task here is for the student to reflect on the conversation and attempt to recreate it on paper with as much faithfulness as possible.

Remind the students that we don’t speak as we write. Our spoken language is filled with half-finished sentences, slang, and non-standard pronunciations. Encourage students to accurately convey the rhythms and sounds of the speech they heard and/or uttered themselves.

This may require the students to veer from the usual grammar and spelling rules to render the dialogue convincingly.

Also, encourage the students to read their words aloud as they write to listen for their authenticity.

When students have finished, have them share their work with the class.

6. Found in Translation

This is a poetry writing activity, but with a twist.

Bring in a copy of a poem that is in a language other than English to show the students. Another European language will work best for this activity, as it is helpful if the students can make some educated guesses at the meanings of some of the words.

The students’ task will be to ‘translate’ the poem from a language they don’t read into English. Just in case some students do speak the language, be sure to have an alternative poem in another language to hand, too.

When you give the students the poem, don’t provide them with any background about the poem’s meaning.

Instead, tell them that they are to translate the poem into English. They can mimic the lines, spacing, and shape of the poem on the page. They can examine the words and attempt to deduce or guess at their meanings. Simply, they must do their best to interpret the poem and render its meaning on the page.

When the students have finished, have them share their work with the class and compare the wildly different interpretations of the original poem.

You might well be surprised at how close some students will come to the original subject matter!

World Teachers’ Day

Held annually since 1994 on 5 th October, World Teachers’ Day , also known as International Teachers’ Day , commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the ILO/UNESCO Teachers’ Status Recommendation of 1966. It is a standard-setting mechanism that discusses teachers’ status and conditions around the world. This recommendation outlines requirements relating to the policies of education workers, recruiting and initial training, as well as continuing education, jobs, and working conditions for teachers. World Teachers’ Day (WTD) is not a public holiday but a worldwide observance. To supplement the 1966 Recommendation by covering teaching and research staff in higher education, the Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Workers was adopted in 1997. The goal of World Teachers’ Day is to “appreciating, assessing and improving the educators of the world” and to provide an opportunity to discuss teacher-related and teaching issues. In several countries around the world, on or around October 5, numerous activities are organized. These include events in general to celebrate teachers or others who have made a special contribution to a specific culture. Conferences highlighting the value of teachers and learning, additional teacher training sessions, recruitment drives for the teaching profession among university students or other suitably trained professionals, and events to enhance the profile of teachers and their role in the media may also mark the day.

With the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 4 on education and the committed objective (SDG 4.c) to identify teachers as crucial to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Education, WTD has become an opportunity to make progress and focus on how to overcome the remaining challenges of promoting the teaching profession. UNESCO and Education International (EI) are organizing an annual campaign to celebrate World Teachers’ Day to help give the world a greater understanding of teachers and the role they play in the advancement of students and society. In organizing World Teachers’ Day activities in many countries, trade unions or other professional organizations that serve teachers play an important role. These include:

The Australian Education Union.
The Canadian Teachers’ Federation.
The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (Canada).
The All India Secondary Teachers’ Federation.
The Japan Teachers’ Union.
The Teachers Council (New Zealand).
The National Union of Teachers (United Kingdom).
The National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (United Kingdom).
The National Education Association (United States).

UNESCO notes that everybody can benefit by celebrating the profession, by raising awareness of the problems of teachers, and by ensuring that respect for teachers is part of the normal order of things. During this day, schools and students, for example, plan an occasion for teachers. In cooperation with UNICEF, the International Labor Organization, and Education International, World Teachers’ Day is being co-convened. In addition, foreign, national, and local activities are coordinated by international organizations such as TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Education International. Posters are displayed in some places and pupils and former students are encouraged to give e-cards or letters of gratitude to educators who have made a remarkable or unforgettable contribution to their education.
