Try to be concise – not more than ¾ of a page (cca 200-250 words), but detailed enough so that the reader understands what the paper is about.

Writing the Body Sections

When you are certain you can understand the concepts and arguments presented in the literature, it’s time to write your body paragraphs.

The goal is to provide the reader with enough context and argumentation to prove your point. So, if you’re writing about the advantages of nuclear energy, you have to provide evidence from the literature as well as a thorough analysis of all benefits and drawbacks. The goal is to be as objective as possible, while ensuring your results are accurate.

Do not dwell on too much detail, you cannot fit all of the information in a 5 – 10 page paper. Isolate the most important pieces of evidence, maybe 3-4 and focus on those.

As a rule of thumb, you will aim for 4 – 5 body paragraphs minimum, but in most cases you will need more. The first section should be the literature review, where you analyze state-of-the-art of the topic you are writing about.

Following the literature review is your analysis, which draws from the information you’ve collected. It’s important to note, do not try and make up new stuff, or draw conclusions in this section. Simply analyze and summarize the findings in your own voice.

The last paragraph of the body section can be your own summary, where you present a different opinion. Be concise and do not go into too much detail, simply note if you think there are any discrepancies in the literature.

Remember : Always start your paragraphs with a topic sentence and try to contain the information within the paragraph to the topic.

Writing the Conclusion

Conclusion is the most important part of the term paper, even though many do not give it enough attention. This is where you put everything you’ve written together and summarize key findings.

Important : Conclusion is not the place to add new information or knowledge!

To write a good conclusion keep in mind your initial research question and thesis statement. The goal of the term paper is to answer the question and prove your thesis statement is correct. Has your paper done this? Write it down and explain why or why not your initial proposal was correct. A thesis statement can be wrong, and you must acknowledge this in your conclusion.

In the conclusion:

  • Summarize your findings

Editing and Finalization

The final word of the conclusion has been written, references added and alphabetized, the paper and the title page formatted. You are finally done. Or, maybe not! Now is the time for the final edit.

Teachers, above everything else, hate reading papers with spelling mistakes and poor grammar. To make sure your paper does not annoy the teacher (you don’t want a lower grade), make sure it is completely free of any errors.

Describe what method you will use – such as literature review, an experiment, or something else. Two to three sentences.

Define the results you obtained after using the method. Two to three sentences.

Remember : The abstract should be between 120 and 200 words in length, no more is needed.

No, they are not. A research paper is an original piece of writing that comes after some type of original research has been done. I felt so happy when I received this feedback from my professor for my midterm paper. This remark was more than just a compliment on my paper; it also helped me to recognise my strengths. It was the first time I had received feedback that motivated me to write future class papers. This experience shifted my mindset about academic writing for several reasons.

First, the positive feedback boosted my self-confidence as a second-year PhD student who had tried to find her way into the competitive US publishing culture. I realised that well-developed ideas always have a home. Most PhD students tend to underestimate their ability to develop remarkable ideas and write compelling papers because a lack of confidence causes them to constantly question their capabilities (I bet many of us ask, “Am I cut out to be here?”).

Second, writing for publication is different from writing for class. I noticed that turning a class paper into a publishable paper is a valuable way to begin your publishing journey, especially during the early stages of graduate school. Getting a head start on writing a manuscript helps to teach you how to prepare for publication, how to choose a journal for submission, how to handle the review process, how to respond to a journal’s decision and so on. It is best to start early to improve your experience in scholarly writing.

Third, I discovered a different mindset from the traditional dissertation-centric mindset. Being a doctoral student requires more than writing a dissertation during the last year of graduate school. One of the goals of pursuing a doctoral degree should be to foster one’s capability to write concisely and comprehensively to communicate ideas. Why would we wait until the last year of the doctoral programme to make our research visible? We should begin to think about how to make our way to publishing from day one of our doctoral journey.

Last but not least, being a first-generation doctoral student, I needed a mentor to support me in academia. When I engaged in converting my class paper into a manuscript, my professor became my mentor. We had several meetings and writing sessions to improve my paper. I had a chance to learn from him about how to organise my ideas and how to generate compelling arguments in my writing. This experience has been useful for writing my conference papers, proposals related to my dissertation work and other projects I have worked on.

Being a PhD student is emotionally and mentally taxing. We need motivation rather than grades. We need academic support rather than lectures. We need a sign of recognition rather than the feeling of being a second-class citizen in academia.

Here are three important tips for writing a paper that people want to read:  

Be confident

Develop your ideas thoroughly. Share them with your colleagues. Be open to discussions about how you can keep improving your writing. Keep pushing yourself to sharpen your skills and ideas. Your work might not get accepted by highly prestigious journals, but starting with a lower-tier journal is better than not having any papers published by the time you graduate.

Create your own opportunity

Leave your comfort zone to make a difference. Many class papers in graduate school mean a lengthy research paper. Do not undervalue the time you spend on a class paper. Take the opportunity to polish your paper through the feedback you receive. Utilise help from people around you as you go along.

Stick to people who help you

Find a mentor, and remember that they don’t always have to be your PhD adviser. Recognise others who help you succeed. Value senior researchers’ ideas in your field.

The Course work Resubmission Policy supports the University Student Conduct Honor Code. The Coursework Resubmission Policy Resource clarifies the difference between resubmitting a paper in an acceptable manner, recycling an assignment and committing self-plagiarism, and repurposing assignments for successful research and writing.

Definitions

Resubmitting Resubmitting a paper or assignment when retaking a course only after a failed attempt in the same Purdue Global traditional course or module course. Resubmission is allowed without penalty and is not considered self-plagiarism.

Repurposing Using parts of a previously submitted assignment for work in a subsequent course or module course belonging to a different parent course. Repurposing is allowed only with prior permission from the instructor, proper self-citations, and substantial revisions.

Reworking Improving an unsuccessful competency assessment in a module course based on feedback from the instructor and resubmitting it in the same term to attempt a passing grade. This is allowed and applies to module courses only.

Recycling Submitting a previously submitted paper or other work for a course or a different parent course as though it were new work. Recycling constitutes self-plagiarism.

Resubmitting Assignments: Facts

During the course of an academic career, a student may retake a previously failed Purdue Global course or module course. A student is allowed to resubmit or reuse previously submitted assignments in their entirety when retaking a previously attempted Purdue Global course or module course. Resubmission is not allowed any other time. The following facts apply to the Coursework Resubmission Policy:

  • Instructors must be informed of the submission.
  • Proper notification of the prior submission must be included on the resubmitted assignment. This can be included in the Author Note section of the title page. Example : This assignment was originally submitted on [Give the date] for [Give the course and the instructor].
  • The resubmitted assignment is graded like an original submission.
  • The student is responsible for ensuring the reused assignment meets current course grading criteria and outcomes.
  • All other aspects of the work should adhere to the Code of Student Conduct .

Repurposing Assignments: Facts

Students may be asked to write on similar topics throughout their major coursework, and there may be times when it is appropriate to build on previous coursework. In these cases, it is important to follow proper procedures to ensure proper citation and acknowledgements.

When repurposing an assignment, the following facts apply:

  • The student must first request and obtain written permission from the current instructor if the student wishes to use any part of previously submitted coursework for a current course or any part of a previously submitted competency assessment from a module course belonging to a different parent course from the current one. Permission is not needed if any part of a previously submitted competency assessment is applied to a subsequent module belonging to the same parent course.
  • Once permission is granted, the student is responsible for revising and refining the coursework as necessary to fit current course requirements. These revisions should be substantial and will likely contain new research and other significant refinements.
  • The student may also be required to submit the previous assignment for comparison purposes.
  • The student should also be sure to adhere to the Self-Citation Policy . The Self-Citation Resource explains the idea of repurposing assignments and the proper way to cite them.

Reworking Assignments: Facts

Students taking module courses have unlimited attempts in a term to rework and resubmit competency assessments after unsuccessful attempts in an effort to achieve a passing grade.

  • If a competency assessment does not meet Minimum Submission Requirements, it will be returned to a student without feedback. If that happens, a student must review the Minimum Submission Requirements for the module and make sure each item is addressed.
  • Reworking usually takes place after an assessment has been graded and instructor feedback has been provided. Reworking requires significant reconsideration of the assessment content based on the feedback received. It often requires re-evaluating ideas and expressing them in a new way or developing them more to demonstrate understanding of a competency outcome. Just changing a few words around is considered editing rather than reworking and may result in assessments being returned to students without new feedback.   • There are times when a student will be asked to convert an assignment to another type of text, like converting an essay to a PowerPoint presentation. For these types of exercises, a student may use the same ideas, but the student will need to rewrite the ideas to fit the new context and adhere to the Self-Citation Policy .

Recycling Assignments: Facts

Students are expected to produce original course work for each course taken at Purdue Global per the Code of Student Conduct .

  • A student who uses previously submitted coursework or other work as though it were new or original work for the current class is committing self-plagiarism.
  • Students who violate the Code of Student Conduct will be subject to the stated sanctions of that policy.

Paraphrasing can be defined as using your own words to write a paper or work almost the same length as the original to avoid plagiarism.

It is important to cite even when summarizing to show where your information and ideas came from. There are three forms of citing when writing summaries for academic submission:

  • The use of narrative citations.
  • Combining narrative citations with parenthetical citations.
