‘Mark Antony’ Review: SJ Suryah is the heart and soul of this mindless time-travel film

Mark Antony is a name that every Tamil film fan can remember in the blink of an eye. Thanks to Raghuvaran’s iconic performance in Rajinikanth’s ‘Baassha’, he makes Mark Antony one of the deadliest villains. Cut to 2023, we have Vishal and director Adhik Ravichandran trying to cash in on the fame that the character Mark Antony has created over the years. Like 'Baashha', 'Mark Antony' will be remembered for a superlative performance from SJ Suryah.

Antony (Vishal) and Jackie Pandian (SJ Suryah) are best friends and gangsters in Chennai. Together, they control Chennai through their rowdyism. However, their enemy Ekambaram (Sunil) decides to take revenge against Antony for killing his brother. He plots and kills Antony in a bar. This makes Jackie become the sole gangster and he brings up Antony’s son, Mark.

Meanwhile, Chiranjeevi (Selvaraghavan) is working on a time-travel machine, i.e., a phone in this case, which finds Antony. He decodes the time-travel phone to make changes to his past life, so he could bring back his mother and question his father. When Antony and Jackie get hold of this phone, they express their desire to change the past.

Adhik Ravichandran created a name for himself in the Tamil film industry. After scoring a hit with ‘Trisha Illana Nayanthara’, the director failed to achieve success of that magnitude. But, ‘Mark Antony’ could just bring him that success. The time-travel gangster film is a whacky and crazy ride. What works in ‘Mark Antony’ are SJ Suryah’s brilliant performance, GV Prakash’s music and the comedy bits.

The film also has its own share of flaws. So much so that it keeps reminding us not to expect logic in a film like this. The time-travel phone has limited functions and Chiranjeevi writes them down in a diary. But, the rules and functions are so convenient that they change according to the screenplay.

‘Mark Antony’ has a solid story in its score and Adhik has laced it with several theatrical moments at frequent intervals. Be it the interval sequence, Jackie’s interaction with his son or the climax, the film keeps you entertained with his quirky one-liners. The screenplay goes wild and it could have been a bit crisper towards the second half.

While Vishal is the lead hero, it is SJ Suryah who steals the show by miles. He is credited as ‘Nadipu Arakan’ (acting beast) and he truly lives up to the name with the variations he has shown in the film. Though Vishal has tried his best, his performance is not as effective as Suryah’s. Sunil, in his role of Ekambaram, proved why he is one of the best performers in Telugu cinema.

That said, there are some problematic bits in ‘Mark Antony’. Be it the treatment of Ritu Varma’s character, the cliched way in which Silk Smitha’s character behaves or Y Gee Mahendran’s act, these stereotypes could have been avoided in this day and age.

‘Mark Antony’ works well because of its (un)intentional comedy. Sometimes, you laugh at the dialogue and sometimes you laugh at the film itself. Either way, you laugh while watching the film and that’s probably the film’s success.

Apart from SJ Suryah, it is GV Prakash’s music that takes the cake. The cinematography by Abinandhan Ramanujam needs special mention as the frames are carefully crafted and take us back to the 70s and 80s.

That said, ‘Mark Antony’ is a valiant effort and, with certain shortcomings, it still manages to engage the audience and leave them in splits.

The film has become  IMDb’s most anticipated Indian film. Taking the second spot on the list is Leo, followed by Thank You For Coming, Salaar, Chandramukhi 2, Fukrey 3, Skanda: The Attacker, Mission Raniganj, Sukhee and The Vaccine War. 

Sharing his excitement for the movie Vishal had earlier told ANI, "The South Indian film called Mark Anthony is already creating a big buzz. We have launched the Hindi trailer and are looking forward to releasing the movie on September 15th in other South Indian languages and the dubbed version will be released on September 22 in the Hindi language."

He added, "Mark Anthony is a science fiction and time travel film. It is a period film. It is interesting to see how it unfolds all the surprises. Even Surya sir is doing dual roles of father and son."

About Mark Antony, SJ Suryah said, "The film has a very challenging role because it includes dual roles and different timelines like 1995, 1965, and 1975. By changing the past we make changes in future too, so this is very challenging and interesting. Though it’s a dual role it feels like you are doing five roles".

Director Adhik Ravichandran said, "I always want to change a few things in my past so we couldn’t do that in real. So, I thought what If he gets a phone like this and you know changes that happened in past will reflect in future? That was the main idea of the movie then I brought into gangsters and all those things that will keep the audience entertained".

In retrospect, the 2020s will go down in the history of Tamil cinema as the era which gave a lot of work to stuntsmen and makeup artists. There’s more (fake) blood spilt for films now than the amount of writing ink. Bullets, guns, gore, blood, and excess violence are the way of Tamil cinema now. Lokesh Kanagaraj seems to have ushered in the trend with Vikram and the blood is spilling over everywhere. Adhik Ravichandran’s Mark Antony is keeping up with the trend. But it is getting boring now to see that one big machine gun appearing everywhere. Understandably, the hero walking in slow-mo carrying the machine gun and shells splattering everywhere was once cool and all, but it’s time it is termed redundant. And the machine guns are getting bigger with every movie and their phallic symbolisms are not subtle anymore.

Of course, nuance is not the strong suit of Adhik who made a name for himself in the industry with the adult comedy Trisha Illana Nayanthara . He comes across as someone who wants to make something eccentric and crazy. However, the problem is such odd films often happen but seldom get ‘made’. It is easy to conceive a story, but texturing it is another matter. While Adhik strives a lot to create this vibe for a unique retro-sci-fi-gangster-masala potboiler, all we get is a failed attempt with some great streaks of potential.

The problem starts right at the beginning of the film, where Adhik lays down the rules for his world. It is camouflaged as the manual for the time-travelling telephone invented by Chiranjeevi (Selvaraghavan), a scientist in 1975 in Tamil Nadu. With the phone, one can speak to people in the past. But not the future, says the rule book. One can call to a date only once. All these rules are conveniently laid down, instead of being realised with the screenplay. If Adhik wants to get into the main story and get done with setups as fast as he can, he should have had some big convincing core for the viewer to forgive the lazy writing. There’s no such trade-off here. At the core, Mark Antony is about two gangsters Antony (Vishal) and Jackie Pandian (SJ Suryah). There’s then their arch nemesis Ekambaram (Sunil). On one unfortunate day in 1975, Antony is killed. In the present, Antony’s son Mark (Vishal again) grows up in the protection of Jackie. Mark hates his father for killing his mom (Abhinaya). He chooses to not get into violence and leads the life of a poor mechanic. However, when he gets hold of the telephone, everything about his dad seems to be in contrast to his perception of him. He has to now use the phone to rewrite his past to save both his mom and dad.

There are several contrivances, but that’s not the problem with Mark Antony. To be honest, the film doesn’t pretend to be some high-brow time-travel story. It uses the tropes of the sci-fi genre for a typical Tamil masala film. Yet, the problem is it fails to provide mindless entertainment, which seems to be its only objective. We don’t care about the flying cars, burning double-decker bus, or the CGI-created Silk Smitha who is inside. Even the violence fails to provide the catharsis or whatever it is supposed to. Everything is plastic, even the ‘mother sentiment’.

All said and done, Mark Antony is entertaining whenever SJ Suryah is on the screen. He is incredible both as Jackie Pandian and as his son Madhan Pandian. The ‘inter-timensional’ telephonic conversation between the father and son is probably the high point of the film. Once Suryah has performed a role, it is pretty hard to ascertain whether the character was written for him or he owned it. His performance is exaggerated, but still, it has soul to it. He is desperate and determined at the same time. Take him out of the film, Mark Antony will lack the little magic it has going for it. The movie could have been as good as SJ Suryah’s performance had Adhik prioritised writing over moments. The brilliance one can see in the fights and editing of Vijay Velukutty is absent in the screenplay, which gets treated as afterthoughts. In a bid to create theatre moments, the director seems to have written the story around them, failing to realise scenes are for the story. Not the other way around.

Vishal and SJ Suryah's dual roles, as well as the trailer for "Mark Antony," raised some expectations for this film.

Let’s find out its merits and demerits.

Story: Set in 1995. Mark (Vishal), a mechanic, believes that his father, Antony (Vishal), a ruthless gangster, murdered his mother. Jackie Marthand (SJ Suryah), his father's friend, raises him, and Mark begins to regard Jackie as a father figure.

Jackie, like Antony, has a son named Madan (SJ Surya). Madan also likes Mark’s girlfriend Ramya (Ritu Varma).

When Ramya asks Mark to repair her father’s car, he discovers a box inside. The box has a telephone, invented by a scientist Chiranjeevi (Selva Raghavan), which can connect to people from the past.

The rest of the story is about how this phone changes Mark's life and how he learns the truth about his mother's murder.

Artistes’ Performances: Vishal and SJ Suryah not only get to play dual roles, but they also appear in a retro style. While Vishal exhibits both negative and positive aspects of a role, his role as Antony is more colorful and interesting.

SJ Suryah, who was riveting in the recent time travel film "Manaadu," gets to play yet another eccentric villain. Surya's performance as both father and son steals the show. His portrayal of Jackie is superb.

Suneel is adequate in the role of Ekambaram. Ritu Varma’s role is more like a junior artist. Abhinaya asserts her presence.

Technical Excellence: The film boasts top notch production values. The production design and the background score by GV Prakash Kumar stand out

Analysis 'Mark Antony' stars Vishal and SJ Suryah in dual roles and is set in the science fiction genre. On the surface, the concept appears to be interesting. However, the fantasy film based on the time travel concept is taken to an extreme level, making it frustrating to watch after a point.

The film is entertaining towards the end of the first half, with the interval bang setting the real base. But the proceedings are no way convincing as everything happens as per the convenience of the screenplay.

Several rules and functions of the time-travel phone are revealed at the beginning of the film, but they keep changing.

Vishal appears as a villain in the beginning, and SJ Suryah appears as a good-natured gangster. Their true natures are revealed by the interval. Hence, we get to see Vishal in both negative and positive roles, as well as SJ Suryah as both a good guy and a menacing villain. Although the film's outlandish concept allows both of these actors to shine, with Surya in particular having the opportunity to steal the entire show, it is not engaging enough.

Even the episode with the Silk Smitha lookalike doesn't work very well. Though some lines here and there provide laughs.

The time-travel element, a couple of humorous episodes, and the setting are all highlights, but the story's wackiness and the erratic narration detract from the film's impact. Concise narration would have helped.

On the whole, "Mark Antony" is quite whacky and makes no sense. Despite its best efforts to offer something new to the time travel genre, the lengthy drama makes a tiresome watch.

The film, directed by Adhik Ravichandran , has been trending on X (formerly Twitter). Many have taken to the social media website to review the film, which is being called the comeback movie of Vishal.

A Twitter review read, "A fun entertainer, retro-style drama with good performance from Vishal and terrific outcome from SJ Suryah. Second half is more interesting than first half (fire emoji)."

A person also tweeted, "Mark Antony first half: Going good so far (firecracker emoji). Story-wise a lot of detailing and written-well. Vishal and SJ Suryah are fire. Pre-interval song placement was full vibe." One more tweeted, "2023 is the year of comeback with blockbusters. Mark Antony: First review of Vishal and SJ Suryah's time travel film is here

As Vishal's next outing, Mark Antony gears up to hit screens on September 15, the first review of the film is here. The much-awaited high-voltage action thriller is directed by Adhik Ravichandran, marking his maiden collaboration with the director. Vishal will also be teaming up with SJ Suryah in this quirky film, which is based on time travel.

First Review

Meanwhile, the first review of the film was given by executive producer Aditi Ravindranath. Cast and crew

The star cast includes Ritu Varma, Sunil, Selvaraghavan, Abhinaya, Kingsley and YG Mahendran. Music is by GV Prakash Kumar, cinematography by Abhinandan Ramanujam, and Vijay Velukutty is handling the editing. Peter Hein has choreographed the action sequences, along with Dhilip Subbarayan, Kanal Kannan, and Dinesh Subbarayan.

Mark Antony is touted to be a time travel film, in which they travel back and forth in time, using a telephone to take revenge on each other. The film is bankrolled by S Vinok Kumar. Mark Antony will be released in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam as it hits screens on the occasion of Vinayagar Chaturthi.

Digital rights acquired by Zee5

Zee5 has acquired the film's digital rights and Zee Tamil has bagged satellite rights as well. This will be Vishal's maiden release of 2023. Expectations are soaring from the film, since the actor's last release Laththi, helmed by debutant A Vinoth Kumar, failed to set the cash registers ringing. The film had Sunainaa playing the leading lady and was bankrolled by actors Nandhaa and Ramana, marking their first outing as producers.
