After we spent way too much money on our first set of homeschool curriculum only to discover we hated it, I decided to create my own homeschool curriculum . While I love shopping for new, affordable homeschool workbooks and supplies, I quickly discovered that I could find tons of free homeschool resources online.

I’m excited to share my list of 56 free homeschool math resources with you.

Free Online Homeschool Math Resources – Make Math Homeschooling Easy and Free!

I know teaching math is overwhelming to some homeschool parents. Fortunately, there are tons of resources – from websites to worksheets to videos – to help you teach homeschool math or supplement the curriculum you use.

You don’t have to hire and expensive tutor or spend hundreds on a complete math curriculum if you do a little work on your own to piece together a frugal or free math plan for your children.

My Family’s Favorite Free Homeschool Math Websites

1. Math-Drills.com –I use this site daily.  Math-Drills has a ton of FREE worksheets for everything from basic operations to statistics.  These are great for teaching new math skills and for practice.  My boys use worksheets from Math Drills to practice math every day.

2.   Mathantics –This is a YouTube channel with all sorts of math lesson videos.  When I teach a new math concept, I often have the boys watch a video lesson, as well, to add clarity.  (I tend to do math a little differently than I was taught and it involves more intuition and reverse plug-and-chug than is actually teachable to anyone else.  So, you can see how my boys might need some supplemental teaching.  And, it keeps my husband-with-a-degree-in-Math happy.)

3.   Shmoop –Shmoop has more than just free math resources, so you will probably see it appear on some of my other free homeschooling resources lists.  As for Shmoop’s math pages, we like the simple lessons and the down-to-earth definitions of terms.  There are quite a few advertisements to distract you, but hey, it’s FREE.  They have to pay the bills, you know?  Definitely worth closing a few ad pop-ups to utilize the free math resources there.

So you recently decided to begin a homeschool journey with your child. 

You weighed the pros and cons, assessed the times it takes, and mentally prepared yourself for the possible rocky journey ahead of you.

You may still have some questions about how to choose the right homeschool math curriculum. You also may feel a bit uneasy about how to help with homeschool math, or simply need guidance on where to begin. We’re here to help you!

Choose the right homeschool math curriculum

Start by choosing the right homeschool math curriculum for your child. This is the most important factor as to whether your homeschool math journey will be a rocky road or smooth sailing. 

There are many math resources to find online. How to decide what homeschool math curriculum is best for your child?

• First, I would recommend looking up your state’s home education requirements to see if there are any specific rules to follow when choosing your child’s homeschool math curriculum. Adhere closely to their guidelines.
• Second, make sure the math resources you choose have plenty of math topics, math guides for each grade, and articles that emphasize the four main math concepts of multiplication , division , addition , and subtraction .
• Finally, make sure to choose a math curriculum that incorporates technology. We will discuss later in this article why incorporating game-based learning and technology in your math education is so important.

Stick to a homeschool math schedule

Now that you’ve chosen your homeschool math curriculum, you must set up a schedule that works! Many parents who provide homeschool math help have seen the advantages of having a set time each day to work on school work. This helps your child stay in the school mentality. 

Choose level-appropriate study material

Tutoring students in many grade levels has helped me appreciate that just because a child is in a certain grade, doesn’t mean they are learning at that grade level. You may have a child in third-grade math that is learning at a fourth-grade math level or even below grade level. 

How do you determine what math level your child is learning at currently?I recommend getting familiar with the state standards for each grade level and if you notice your child is struggling with the topics outlined there, you may need to reteach some concepts from the previous grade before you can advance. If you notice your child is excelling with little effort, consider progressing to the next grade level. 

To get your started, we’ve compiled the Common Core math standards for each grade:

Kindergarten

In Kindergarten, students will learn how to count to 100 by ones and tens, the basics of addition and subtraction, and be introduced to measurement and shapes.

In first grade, students will learn addition and subtraction strategies that will help them understand more complex equations later on. They will learn how to add up to and within 20.

Second graders build on their addition and subtraction skills, learning to add up to and within 100. They will begin to estimate using their understanding of numbers and quantities.

In third grade, your child moves into more complex mathematics, like multiplication, division, and fractions. It can be a bit of a challenge, so be prepared to help them build confidence.

Once your child is in fourth grade they will learn how to multiply multi-digit numbers, understand place values, work with fractions, factors, and multiples, and analyze data.

Fifth-grade math standards aim to help your child become skilled in using multi-digit numbers, decimals, fractions, and measurement conversions to solve real-world problems.

Learn when to move forward & when to reteach

As a tutor, I have learned the art of knowing when it is okay to move on to the next math topic (within each grade level) and when extra assistance is needed. At the end of each lesson, I use ten math problems to test each child’s understanding. You can do this, too!

• If you test your child’s understanding with ten questions and they get 6-7 problems right – spend a bit more time reviewing with them
• If you test your child’s understanding and they score 5 or below- reteach the lesson
• If you test your child’s understanding and they score 8 or above- move on to the next lesson.

Incorporate as much reading as possible

Math problems involve a ton of reading! Whenever I’m helping a child who is struggling with math word problems , they are usually also struggling with reading. So, how to help with homeschool math? One of the best ways is to help your child become a better reader. 

• Take time each day to read with your child 
• Incorporate math word problems appropriate for their math level in every lesson or as much as possible Have your child read the word problems aloud and correct their reading as they do.

Utilize technology for providing homeschool math help

Many parents want to limit how much screen time their child gets. At Doodle Learning, we couldn’t agree more! But there also can be a balance. Technology has proven to be a very useful tool in math education when used effectively. 

How can you incorporate technology into your homeschool lessons:

• Include math videos to teach homeschooled math topics
• Make use of math games to reinforce learning & to help your child have fun
• Math apps designed by educators can provide feedback & scaffolding to your child’s learning

Prepare your child for yearly math assessments

Most states require your child to be assessed at the end of each year. Sometimes, this involves a professional coming to your home to see what you’ve been doing to teach your child at home. I recommend the following tips to prepare for yearly assessment:

• Keep an active diary of the work you are doing with your child each week. Include what topic you taught and any work they did. 
• Keep a few worksheets you used to teach your child
• Consider using a math app that tracks your child’s progress so the professional can see your child is actively practicing math concepts and even improving

These free online math programs can help enhance your child's homeschool education.

While homeschooling can be costly, you don’t have to break the bank to fund a great math education for your kids.

With these free online homeschool math curriculums and resources, you can give your homeschooled child an excellent math education without spending a cent.

What to Consider When Choosing a Homeschool Math Curriculum

The beauty of homeschooling is its flexibility. When you use free online math programs, you can find full, comprehensive math courses. Or, you can pull together resources to create your own course, tailored to your child’s needs.

With no charge options, you might have to do a little more legwork, and you'll often have to take care of the assessment portion yourself, but the work is worth it for the savings.

If you need help organizing yourself and your kids, many homeschool printables and templates are available online. Remember that online math games and math apps can help kids consolidate their learning too.

1. Flipped Math

Flipped Math is based on the “flipped classroom” philosophy of mastery learning. This means that students access video lectures at home, and use class time to work through practice problems, complete assessments, and get help from the teacher.

Although this site is meant for classrooms, its lessons are perfect for homeschoolers too. Comprehensive courses include algebra, pre-calculus, geometry, and AP calculus. All the videos are available online, and families can download practice materials, answer keys, and corrective assignments.

You can choose to watch the videos in the original format or with common core standards. Mastery assessments are not included with free courses.

On this website, you can find math courses that include digital textbooks with images, videos, and practice activities. You can create accounts for your kids, and then assign courses to be completed by a specific date.

You can also modify courses by adding, moving, or deleting chapters. Students can change the text's font size and color, as well as highlight sections as they progress through the course. Parents can create quizzes to assess retention, and can also print progress reports throughout the course.

3. Easy Peasy All-in-One Homeschool

Easy Peasy is a free online curriculum that covers all subjects, but you can pick and choose the courses and the grade levels you want your students to study. On this site, 180-day math courses are laid out for students at each grade level. You can choose from level one to pre-algebra, according to the individual abilities of your children.

When your kids open the program, they can follow instructions to read lessons, watch videos, play online games, and print worksheets. They may be directed to other math sites, such as Khan Academy or MasterMath for specific lessons.

Algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, and calculus are available on the Easy Peasy’s High School Site . Like its sister site, the high school version arranges each course in a 180-day format.

Quizzes and final exams are also included. Students can access exam answers and are expected to self-grade them. Easy Peasy makes use of other free math sites, such as CK-12 and NROC throughout each secondary course.

4. Khan Academy

While Khan Academy has expanded to include many subjects, it is still a fantastic resource for homeschool math, from kindergarten through the secondary grades. There are even SAT prep, college prep, and college-level courses if your high school student wants to get ahead.

Create a parent account, add your children as students, and assign lessons or courses to each child, according to their needs. Students can check their learning with quizzes, unit tests, and challenges.

Meanwhile, parents can track their child’s progress from the dashboard. With this program, you’re not limited to specific grade levels, so you can individualize courses as necessary.

Using a different curriculum? No problem, you can still use Khan Academy to look up specific concepts and watch the corresponding videos.

If you check out the free math courses on the online teaching platform, Udemy, you’ll find nearly 200 standalone video classes, starting at the middle school level and addressing certain subjects.

These videos are probably not going to work as a full curriculum, but students can dive into courses that appeal to them. If you’re looking for courses in other languages, you might find them here too.

Unit tests and final exams with answer keys are also included. Keep in mind that the course author recommends supplementing each lesson with more practice using free internet resources, such as printable worksheets.

7. XtraMath

XtraMath doesn’t provide a comprehensive curriculum, but kids can still use this resource to master basic math facts. Spending just a few minutes a day practicing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division through timed practice questions and games can help develop fluency and automaticity.

When you create a parent account and add each of your children, you can easily track their progress and see where they might be struggling.

Your child can always use YouTube to look up specific videos to help explain a lesson they’ve learned elsewhere. Alternatively, you can decide what you’d like your child to learn and add videos to a playlist.

There are many YouTube channels to help your kids when they get stuck. CTC Math , for example, has great video tutorials at each grade level. Mathantics also has many playlists filled with engaging topic-centered videos.

Students who have trouble learning from a textbook might benefit from videos they can watch, pause, rewind, and re-watch. Plus, these online teachers often create fun, engaging videos that students love.

Music videos can also really help kids retain math facts. Try Math Songs by NUMBEROCK or Mr. DeMaio to help with memorization.

Spiral or Mastery

One of the reasons I really like the approach of BJU Press Math is because it has a good blend of mastery and spiral learning.  BJUP Math books spend a full chapter on a topic (mastery) before moving on to a new topic.  But then they come back again to that original topic in greater length in a later chapter (spiral).

In kindergarten through 5th grade, the BJUP Math books are worktexts, which means that you are able to write in the books.  The pages are perforated and there is enough space given to work out the problems.  The books are engaging and interesting to look at, with color illustrations.  The instructions are clear at the beginning of each lesson.

Most parents would be fine without a teacher’s manual for this age range.  You can easily see the concept to be mastered in the lesson and you can read through the explanation with your child, or come up with a way to teach it to them.  Each lesson is just the front and back of a page.

Topics are introduced and worked on for an entire chapter.  The next chapter will be a new topic, but you can be sure that the book will circle around again and go deeper with previously taught topics in coming chapters.

I don’t give my K-5th kids chapter tests.  I let them use the chapter review in the book as their test.  If they don’t understand something or get it wrong, we can start there are fix any problems with understanding.  At this stage, I know on a daily basis if they’ve grasped a concept, or if we need to take a second day on it.

You can buy Reviews books for additional practice for each lesson, but I found that it was too repetitive for my homeschooled kids.  One page of math each day was plenty.

BJUP Math Review – Grades 6-8

Starting with 6th grade, this curriculum moves from a consumable worktext style to a traditional textbook approach.  Students will need to write out their work on their own paper.  I give my kids spiral notebooks to write their math equations in.  At this point, I also break down and buy the teacher’s manual.  This is definitely written for a traditional classroom teacher.  I never use the teaching notes or examples, but I buy the teacher’s book because it’s the only place to find the solutions and answers to all of the problems in the student text.  It is a big investment, but worth the hassle and expense.  At this point I also buy a set of tests and answers.

Approximate Price:  Textbook $30 / Teacher’s Edition $75 / Tests & Answers $25

Online or DVD option with books: $299

We used the DVD option one year for 8th grade and the online option one year for 8th grade.  It was a big expense and after trying each one with two different kids, I’m not convinced it was worth $299 each time (although I did get it at 15% discount at the time).  This year we will be looking to Khan Academy or other YouTube videos if we run into hard concepts that need explained more than the textbook can do.

The teacher’s edition does show how to work every other equation in the textbook.  Sometimes my kids can figure out the process on their own by analyzing the solutions in the teacher’s manual.

BJUP Math for High School

These are my initial thoughts when my oldest was in 9th grade. See below for an updated review on BJUP Math for high school.

We have only used Algebra I (9th grade) at this point and will be using Geometry (10th grade) this year.  I’ll update this post when I have a verdict on them!

Last year, we did use the online teaching for Algebra I.  My son took the tests and quizzes online, and they were instantly graded by the computer.  Solutions were shown for each wrong answer.  This was helpful, but not worth the cost in my opinion.

For my second child doing Algebra I this coming year, we aren’t spending the extra money for the online teacher.  Same with my rising 10th grader.  We’ll use the textbooks, helps in the teacher’s edition, and online videos.

I always purchase the test and answer packets with these upper level courses.  It is harder to assess each day how well my students grasp the concept.  These upper level courses also come with section quizzes, so you don’t have to wait until the end of the chapter to assess.  I don’t use all of the quizzes, but just as needed.

2022 Update on BJUP for High School

I consider myself fairly good at being able to help my kids with Algebra I. But once they moved past that and there were multiple kids in high school maths, I just didn’t have the time each day to coach them through difficulties. As of now, we’re about to graduate our second from high school and still have two currently in upper grade math.

So, we have since moved into using CTCMath for all our kids once they reach 8th or 9th grade . I still do have to help sometimes if they get stuck, but CTCMath is a better choice for us in the higher grades because:

• one price per family for unlimited number of students
• small video lessons
• automatic grading
• includes all math courses from K-12

You can read about our experience with CTCMath . I still have my elementary student using the BJUP Math Worktext because I think they are superior to having her online for math in the early years. This is our preference and recommendation.

One other option for you to look into if you want an online and video-based high school math course is Thinkwell Math. We also had a good experience when we reviewed Thinkwell, but the online interface seemed a bit clunkier to us than CTCMath, so that’s why we didn’t continue with it. However, your family might like Thinkwell better, so check it out and see what you think. Here’s our review of Thinkwell Math for High School.

• there is help and explanations of problems in the teacher’s guide
• worktext for younger kids is inexpensive
• clear instructions in the work text and text
• able to pass textbooks on to younger siblings
• price is appropriate, especially when the curriculum can be passed on
• DVD or online class options
• includes enough practice to master a concept
• takes the guesswork when wondering if my kids will have gaps in their knowledge – solid curriculum, on the harder end of things
• teacher’s guide can be expensive since I only want it for solutions to equations
• DVD or online class options can be expensive, especially with multiple kids
• very limited in fact review and drills in the younger grades, so you will need to supplement

This curriculum might work for you if you:

• want a solid math curriculum with a teacher’s edition
• like a traditional approach to math
• want math with optional DVD or online instruction
• want a math program that moves with your child from kindergarten through high school

Homeschool Planet offers made-for-you lesson plans for all the BJU Press math curriculum.

This curriculum might not work for you if you:

• don’t want math program with a Christian worldview (some of the equations might reference a church or missionaries, and sections between the chapters discuss Christian worldview)
• want a free or very inexpensive option (especially in the older grades)
• don’t like a traditional textbook approach to math
• don’t feel confident using the teacher’s edition to help your student correct his work

Bob Jones math is the best on the market, in my opinion. When the girls went to school, they were approximately 2 years ahead and understood concepts that others struggled with because of Mr. Harmon’s teaching on the videos. If we decide to homeschool again down the road, BJU math will be at the top of my list.

Yes, I think so too! When the boys went to Christian school for a brief time, they used Saxon, and in my opinion, it was terrible. Very confusing and doesn’t support a mastery approach at all. BJU math is tough – but in a good way. 🙂
