English Essay on “Pride Goes Before a Fall” English Essay-Paragraph-Speech for Class 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 CBSE Students and competitive Examination.

Pride Goes Before a Fall

Pride is born but of overconfidence. It is considered to be a sin. Pride often results in weakness. There are many things which create pride in marl. These are riches, status, power, recognition, ability, etc. The saying that pride goes before a fall is proved by many instances. Take, for example, the story of the hare and the tortoise. The hare was very confident of running fast and reaching the destination before time. He slept on the way and lost the race to the tortoise. It is seen that many students who scored high marks have become so over-confident of their achievements that they consider themselves as above average and neglect their studies. As result, they lose their high position. On the other hand, many weak students work very hard and, in the end, they surpass the brilliant students. The feeling of pride in achievement makes a person slack. It is the cause of laziness. A proud person is self-centered. He does not like to listen to other people’s advice. He thinks that he knows everything. One must learn from the examples that pride had resulted in the fall of many. One should be humble in life.

Pride Goes Before a fall Story in English with moral values

Pride goes before a fall story | Pride goes before a fall example | Pride goes before a fall proverb expansion | Meaning of pride goes before a fall

Write a story ending with this saying; Pride goes before a fall.

Pride Goes Before a fall Story

I t is true of the saying that pride goes before a fall. I have seen many people whose lives were full of pride.

Their lives were ended in misery. One of them was the arrogant rainmaker in my village. He had arrogated himself with the gods and challenged God.

He carried his shoulders so high and called himself “the god of the rain” Ajuana was the name of the rainmaker.

He terrorized the whole community with his rain-making charms Anyone who did not have the resources to settle him was in great trouble. It was just like the day Ukanwa, the childless widow, was buried.

She was a poor widow and had no one to pay off the rainmakers.

On the day of her burial, Ajuana did what he was known for. He made sure the sky wept water and blood.

The poor widow’s grave was flooded. But the members of St. Joseph’s parish managed to bury Ukanwa under the rain.

Men and women, old and young, worked tirelessly to see that the flood was drained from the grave. Hastily, the parish priest blessed the grave and ordered them to lay her coffin down the grave.

They were drained beyond measure, including the priest and the servants. Ajuana did not believe his ears when he heard that a family in Uchula had vowed not to pay him homage for their burial preparations.

To be sure, went to the family to find out why they have not come to settle him. They were not afraid to tell him off.

They told him that heaven and earth belong to God. He left the family humiliated. But he promised them a bleeding and moody sky on the day of their brother’s funeral and they made a bet.

On the burial day, the family brought home some men who called themselves “The Psalmists”.

Theirs were to pray prayers continuously. At the back of Ajuana’s house, he was at his rain-making corner.

He stood and went into his kitchen and gathered additional dry tendrils and dry coconut fronds. With these two items and kerosene, making fire was as easy as a snap of the finger.

When the fire produced flames, he sat down at his usual sitting position, his goat-skin bag already by his side.

He was in a haste to bring down the rain. So, he doubled his charms and tactics. Like, instead of placing the fresh herbal leaves one at a time, he doubled each leaf.

He stuffed his nostrils with a double scoop of snuff simultaneously and took a deep breath to send the deadly tobacco into his brain.

This method of snuffing gave him uncontrollable sneezing which caused his nose and eyes to cry tears.

When he noticed that there was a strange force hampering the rainmaking, he jumped into his goat barn and slaughtered a pregnant goat.

He poured the blood like liberation on the rain-stone and rain finally came. He went into his house pacing about.

He bragged and hailed himself. He did not end there, Ajuana aimed to mock his contenders.

He was determined to defy the flood in order to publicly shame and laugh at the bereaved family. He left his house amidst the heavy rain.

At a bend where he would cross a bridge, he tripped. He fell into a surged bridge. The rainmaker was drowned and carried into the river by the flood.

His corpse was not found up to date. Pride goes before a fall!

Pride Goes Before A Fall

Filed Under: Essays Tagged With: Literature

In a bid to exemplify the notion’s statement, “pride goes before a fall,” Alice Walker, Joyce Carol Oates and John Updike draw on their main characters Dee, Connie, and Sammy in their stories “Every day Use,” “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? ” and “A&P” respectively. Dee, Connie and Sammy are an example of how the notion of pride is shown in various ways and how as their pride reaches its peak, they fall. Dee shows her pride in her self centered personality that causes her to lose her appreciation for her mother and her sister Maggie, and causes her to abandon her heritage and become distant.

Connie, in “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? ” shows pride in her overconfidence that leads her to act impetuously causing her to lose her personal safety. Sammy, in “A&P” shows pride by simply quitting his job in response to what he views to be an unacceptable behavior by his boss, and wishes to grab the attention of girls that merely recognize him. The Preoccupation with pride that these characters have causes them to eventually fall. Dee’s egocentrism leads her to become unappreciative to both her family and her heritage.

Dee reveals her true personality when she responds to her mother for the reason she wants to take the quilts instead of her sister in the quotation, “Hang them, she said. As if that was the only thing you could do with quilts”(Walker 375).

This quotation shows moment when Mama’s attitude changes in the story. Before it, she was submissive to Dee and had much respect for her. After, she realizes that Dee will never be grateful to her or even able to understand that there are other people in this world besides herself.

The Term Paper on Analysis of Feminism in Pride and Prejudice

Abstract:Pride and Prejudice is a marvellous novel of Jane Austen. Although in her age, women are regarded as emotional, weak, nurturing, and submissive, Austen depicts her heroine, Elizabeth as a woman who has her own perspectives, feelings, and opinions. This paper analyses feminism in Pride and Prejudice from its progressive and conservative aspects. The former is reflected from the perspective ...

Dee’s pride is shown in her eagerness to take the quilts that are originally for Maggie; She ignores her sister’s feelings and her mother’s will. She fakes love for her mother’s old things because they are expensive, not because she enjoys the history and is proud of her heritage. The pride causes Dee to lose her appreciation for her mother, sister, and heritage and at the same time she loses her mother appreciation for her. Maybe if she did not respond to her mother’s question by simply hanging the quilts, her mother would have given them to her.

However, her selfish desires of getting whatever she wants leads her to loose her mother’s respect. Connie’s self assertiveness ended by her loosing her safety. Connie shows her pride in her personal thought as the narrative states, “ actually Connie thought that her mother preferred her to June because she was prettier”(Oates 53).

Connie’s overconfidence of her self comes from her beauty. She finds her self to be a beautiful young girl who is a point of interest among the boys.

As a result of herself, she builds up her personality with that overconfidence, while at the same time building her pride up. As soon as her pride is at its maximum level, she acts in an impetuous way ignoring the outcomes of her actions, this can be seen through the quotation, “It was a car she didn’t know… she whispered “Christ, Christ,” wondering how bad she looked… she went into the kitchen and approached the door slowly, then hung out the screen door, her bare toes curling down off the step”(Oates 54).

This quotation shows Connie’s pride and how her pride causes her to fall.

Connie’s reaction when she finds a stranger in her driveway by wondering how she looks reveals that her pride takes value over her safety, while the normal thoughts that any body can think about when he finds a stranger entering his driveway is thinking about his safety, Connie is only concerned with her beauty. Connie’s overconfidence pushes her to approach the door which is the beginning of her fall. Connie lives in her small safe life of teenagers, not taking into consideration the outside wild life that she approaches blindly.

The Essay on Young Girl Mother Girls Story

Within every story or poem, there is always an interpretation made by the reader whether right or wrong. In doing so, one must thoughtfully analyze all aspects of the story in order to make the most accurate assessment based on the literary elements the author has used. Compared and contrasted within the two short stories, "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid, and John Updike's "A&P," the literary ...

At the time she decided to open the door, Connie the teenager and the young adult is blended together. Connie is in a stage of maturation— She decides to approach the door for the stranger which is the teenager side of her mind and at the same time she approaches it slowly which is the young adult side of her character. Her action to hang out the screen door is the time when Connie is completely mature and considered a young adult. At this moment, Connie cannot go back to the level of maturity she had when she was a teenager. Connie starts the fall.

Connie’s overconfidence causes her to portray an imaginary photo of how the world is and she acts from this perspective which ultimately ends her losing her self security. Sammy resigning his job shows pride, but renders him inferior in society. Sammy shows pride in the way he reacts to his boss, Mr. Lengel. The way he treats the girls is shown in the quotation, “The girls who’d blame them, are in a hurry to get out, so I say “I quit” to Lengel quick enough for them to hear, hoping they’ll stop and watch me, their unsuspected hero”(Updike 87).

The quotation shows the girl’s reaction to Mr. Lengel’s words. They want to go out of the store as quick as they can. It also shows Sammy’s rashness in thoughts and making decisions by stating that he quits in a quick manner. Quitting to Sammy is a way that he shows pride and is a way to grab the girls attention. He is showing that he supports them, and he thinks that they will consider him their hero. Sammy also shows hesitation that his action may attract the girls attention. He hopes that by quitting, his proud actions will grab their attention.

However, he comes out of the store and he does not find any body waiting for him. As the narrator states, “I look around for the girls, but they’re gone… I felt how hard the world was going to be to me hereafter”(Updike 88).

At this moment, Sammy realizes his fall. This fall can be viewed in two perspectives. The first perspective is a superficial one because he thought that the girls would be impressed and would be waiting for him which they didn’t. The second is when he realized that he quit his only job and that world will be hard to him, which is something that is hard to handle.

The Essay on Why Does Sammy Quit His Job?

In the short story “A&P”, the character Sammy quits his job for a few different reasons. In the podcast professor Higgins suggest that she quits for two different reasons. Sammy wants to impress the girls. The other reason was because; Sammy mentions that once you make a decision it is fatal not to go back on it. I agree with both reasoning’s. I also agree with both professors that it is a ...

Pride Goes Before A fall

In the town of Ajelogo in Oyo State, there was a beautiful lady named Adumadan. She was from the family of chief Odubanku who was a prominent hunter. Adumadan was advised to marry because she was ageing fast but she did not listen because her beauty was deceiving her.

Many came to woo her but she even abused and rejected the most audacious one among them. One of them was Aramanda. She said that he looked like a pig and also called him a glutton. Aramanda cursed her that her pride would lead to her fall.

One day, a charming Prince appeared from nowhere and went straight to chief Odubanku’s compound to ask for Adumadan’s hand in marriage. Adumadan, on sighting the Prince, fell head over heel in love with him. Her parents tried to caution her but, she didn’t listen; they tried to plead with her but all their pleas fell on deaf ears. Nobody could tell where the Prince came from.

The marriage ceremony took place with great festivities. Everyone was lavishly entertained. The wedding was the talk of the town. Friends and family bid the newly-weds farewell for their journey to the Prince’s kingdom.

The Prince, Adumadan his wife and his servants started their journey. They walked and walked until they reached a spot. The first servant saluted the Prince and said: “Prince Kokosari, I have done my part.”

He changed into a monkey and climbed the tree. Adumadan was about to ask the Prince what that was all about but he gave her a dead glare, so she had to keep mute. They continued their journey till they reached another spot. The second servant saluted the Prince.

“Prince Kokosari, I have done my part.” He said and changed into a vulture and flew away. This happened to the third, fourth and fifth servants. Once they reached a spot they would salute the Prince and changed into different animals. By now Adumadan was trembling with fears because once she decided to talk, the Prince would give her a dead glare.

What they didn’t notice was that the Prince had changed into a big cobra. Adumadan was crying out for help but no one could help her. She heard laughter and turned. She came face to face with Aramanda.

“I told you your pride would lead to your fall,” he said and he disappeared.

The cobra used its tail to drag Adumadan and she was never seen again.

Explanation

Chioma was a tall lady with an aquiline nose and a beautiful face. She was endowed with a long hair which made the villagers of umueke to rate her as the most beautiful lady in the village. Her family tall height added to her homely features. Chioma was the only child of chief Nwachukwu and his wife. Her father was a popular rich timber contractor in the village and he held so many chieftaincy titles in the land. His affluence made his popularity spread far and wide across several villages as a man of means.

As the only daughter of Chief Nwachukwu, Chioma had a very rosy childhood as she grew up in affluence and had every comfort in her stride. As she grew up in the village, she became a spoilt child who had many servants at her beck and call. Chief Nwachukwu and his wife regarded Chioma as a child who must not be made to deprivation and anything she requested must be provided.

Chioma, though not too brilliant, attended a secondary school after which she settled down in her village to live with her wealthy parents. She went into trading and with much money at her disposal, she soon after became wealthy  too as her trade blossomed. She did not have many friends as she was very choosy and arrogant because of her family background and wealth. Those few friends could not advise her as she would not listen to them.

Her beauty and affluence ran into her head and made her conceited She regarded herself as being above everybody else as nobody could offer to advise her on any matter. She behaves arrogantly towards every villager. Men were even afraid of asking her hands in marriage any longer. Some men who were bold enough to woo her in the past were rebuffed as she usually looked down on them as being below her status. After years, men in the village decided not seek her hands in marriage. Any men who mentioned their intention to approach her would be told not to do so.

This made Prince Ndukwe, the son of the king of the village to make up his mind to go for the hands of Chioma in marriage. The Prince had just came back from his studies abroad and decided to visit his village. One evening, he decided to meet Chioma and tell her his mind to marry him The prince was told off when he mentioned his intention to marry Chioma. She said "I can't marry you. though your father is the king He is not as rich as my father". Prince Ndukwe went back home dejected and the men in the village sighed with "had we not told him" as the news of his encounter with Chioma spread across the village.

Two years after, Chioma and her parents decided to travel to the city in search of a suitor for their daughter. As they were going, they had a fatal accident and Chief Nwachukwu and his wife died in the accident while Chioma got spinal cord injury. She was confined to wheel chair and her business went down as she had to depend on people to do most of the things she wanted to do.

She was in the condition for about four years when her father's sister came to pay her a visit and told her of the need for her to get married as she was forty two years old "All your friends are married and as you are now, you can not find a suitor in the city. You have to accept any man that come for your hands in marriage", her aunt said. Few week after, Chioma was approached by a man with a hunch back. She had no option than to accept to marry him. The news that Chioma was going to marry a hunch back man spread across the village and to the delight of all suitable suitors she had rebuffed because of her pride

English Short Story “Pride goes before a fall” Complete Moral Story for Class 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 Kids and Students.

The Sun and The Wind

Once the sun and the wind had a dispute. The wind claimed to be stronger than the sun, but the sun refused to accept the wind’s superiority. The wind was very proud. But the sun was not boastful at all.

In the meantime, a traveler, wearing a coat, happened to pass by them. Both claimed that they would make the traveler take off his coat. First, the wind blew out as fast as it could. The traveler began to shiver with cold. He buttoned up his coat and held it tightly to his body. Thus the wind was defeated.

Now came the turn of the sun. He shone very brightly. The traveler started sweating all over. As it was getting hotter, he took off his coat. Thus it was proved that the sun was stronger than the wind and won the bet.

Judy was surprised and pleased to find out that she was one of the top three students in her category after mid-year scrutiny consequences were announced. However, after returning from the half-term vacations, she became chesty and vain, only speaking to the smartest students in the class and becoming impatient with slower students. Her friends eventually left her, and she performed poorly in the term trials, leading her classmates to attribute her downfall to her haughtiness. Despite attempts to offer advice, Judy rebuffed her former friends and ended up placing 15th in the final year examination results. Her classmates realized that pride had come before her fall.

After the mid-year scrutiny consequences were announced. Judy was both surprised and pleased to happen that she was among the top three students in her category. She glowed with pride as both instructors and friends congratulated her on her accomplishment.

After the half-term vacations. we returned to school to happen a different Judy. The one time low and helpful Judy that we all knew had become chesty and vain. Alternatively of mixing with everyone in the category as she had ever done. she merely spoke to the encephalons of the clas and gave short responses to anyone else. As yearss passed. most of us in category who used to be her friends left her to her new pick of friends.

Every student in the category belonged to a survey groups consisting both bright and weak students. IN the yesteryear. Judy would be highly helpful to the weaker students and in bend. she frequently asked for aid from the brighter 1s. After the vacations. Judy felt she was excessively good to necessitate aid from the brighter pupils in the group. She was impatiend with the slower students and was frequently ryde and hurtful to them. often naming them ‘stupid’ and ‘dumb’ . Gradually. her groups members did non desire to hold anything more to make with her and left her to make her ain perusal.

Soon the term trials came and went. Judy was small defeated and shocked to happen herslef in the 12th place. The remainder of us discuseed the category places and attributed Judy’s ruin to her haughtiness. We felt that her mean public presentation in the term trials was a consequence of her going from the survey group. We ere certain of our analysis and as one of her good friends in the yesteryear. I thought i would wish to give a small advice. However. all my good purposes were snubbed by Judy who told me to mind my ain concern. After that. no 1 else bothered with her anymore. go forthing her to make as she wished.

As we expected. Judy’s name was nowhere near the top when the concluding twelvemonth scrutiny consequences wer announced. Alternatively. she was placed 15th. Tha was midway down the list! Upon hearing that. she jumped of her place and ran out of the category weeping. As she disappeared down the aisle. I shook my caput and idea to myself. “Pride comes before a autumn. and what a autumn. ”

Pride Goes Before a Fall

Pride is a high opinion of one’s own importance and is often considered to be the motivation to strive for success. However, pride can also be considered dangerous, since it can lead to arrogance and evoke the need to preserve self-worth, which results in regrettable decisions.

One of the most common hazards of pride is the potential to become conceited. Having an overly high opinion of one’s own importance, creates an arrogant mindset in which one glorifies all of their accomplishments and abilities. After multiple successes, every achievement adds to one’s perception of their self worth and dwindles the incentive to strive. Without this motivation, a person becomes less thorough in their execution of a plan, leading to trouble. For example, beloved American singer, Mariah Carey, became a notorious viral sensation because of a disastrous New Year’s Eve performance in which her poor choice prompted her own fans to ruthlessly insult her for behaving in an arrogant manner. The famous billionaire’s cockiness in her ability resulted in her being exposed on live television for lip-synching her entire song. In a later interview with Vanity Fair, the pop star admitted that she performed her songs without properly preparing with sound checks stating, “I’m sorry. It was a mess and I blame myself for not practicing at rehearsal.” After three decades of fame and success, Mariah Carey believed she could perform at “Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Years Eve 2016” without practice. It is clear that both Mariah Carey’s opinion of her ability and her ego were highly influenced by her successes overtime and in return, clouded her judgment and behavior.

In addition, those who are overly proud often attempt to maintain their egos and status. In some cases, self glory can serve as the reason to engage in harmful behaviors as individuals seek to protect their self-esteem. Therefore, a loss of pride is usually associated with humiliation and can lead people to participate in aggressive behavior. For instance, Houston Rockets’ center, Dwight Howard, was caught using a banned substance before a basketball game against the Atlanta Hawks in March of 2016. Dwight Howard was assessed for spraying his hands with “Stickum”, a material used to improve grip, in hopes of keeping possession of the ball more on the court. When the ball was eventually passed to Paul Millsap of the Atlanta Hawks, he claimed the ball had been tampered with and showed it to the referees. The referees then concluded that Dwight Howard was behind the incident, and a sports scandal had spread across all media. It was clear Dwight Howard utilized this sneaky maneuver in order to win, ironically because losing the game would tarnish his reputation. Later in an interview with the New York Post, Dwight Howard stated, “I’ve never been a cheater, never been the type of player that has to do something illegal to win. It’s upsetting, but I can’t control it now.” This portrays that Howards’ pride caused his self imposed pressure to maintain his image as a great athlete, which led to him harming his career and losing who he truly was along the way.

Several people may argue that having pride can be extremely motivating, however this particular type of motivation often times leads to unpleasant choices that can cause severe harm to other people and have various negative outcomes. For example, Adolf Hitler often preached about having pride in the German people and why he believed Germans were the superior race to civilians in his nation. Along with this, the historical dictator also spread many propaganda posters across his country to further spread this pride as well as motivate fellow Germans to partake in his mission. Adolf Hitler utilized this national pride as motivation to promote and justify the Holocaust in order to remove the threats to his plan. As a result of his pride induced motivation, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party promoted state sponsored genocide of Jews and other minority groups, in which about eleven million people lost their lives. Adolf Hitler was aware of the fact that his pride was the cause of Germany’s mass destruction and chaos. In fact, Hitler stated, “For it was my pride to have brought about this revolution in Germany … a revolution which led to the greatest upheaval ever seen on earth.” This portrays that Hitler

Although statistically being confident can prominently assist in excelling beyond expectations, having too much pride not only results in cockiness, but also impels people to maintain their ego leading to unfavorable choices.

In the play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, Hecate says, “And you all know security is mortal’s chiefest enemy. ”(3. 5. 32-33). Security, is translated into modern English as “overconfidence”, so Hecate is saying that overconfidence is one main downfall that humans face. Although a ten-page, smarter sounding college level definition could probably be found, the standard dictionary definition of overconfidence is summed up in two words: too confident. It may seem comical that it is as simply put as this, but the definition is 100 percent accurate. To be too much of one thing can be destructive to a person, this is because the word “too” in this context means to have an excess of something.

People with too much money often are corrupt and live miserable lives. Like having too much money, to be overconfident can

also ruin lives. People who are cocky, arrogant, and full of themselves find it hard to make friends, and are always trying to prove themselves to others. Everything is a challenge to these people, and they usually believe that they are better than everyone else.

People who are overconfident get themselves into situations that they cannot handle and end up in dangerous scenarios. For all the faults and burdens overconfidence can cause, it can be deemed as the most destructive flaw in the human race. Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. ” This is where the famous saying “Pride comes before the fall” comes from. The Bible states through this verse that a man who is prideful or overconfident will come to be destroyed and those who are arrogant will fall.

One reason wh

people who are overconfident or too proud tend to live lives that lead to destruction is because pride often blinds a man. When someone is too proud to do something, even if it is in their best interest, the pride is taking over their head. They ignore their natural instinct, like accepting help from someone, and try to take care of things themselves. The same thing goes for overconfidence.

When someone is overconfident, they tend to take on things that are over their heads. They are blinded by their own self-image and pride, and will not accept help from anyone. This can be very dangerous to an individual. Although being overconfident usually ends in destruction, confidence in itself is not a bad thing. In fact, confidence is a necessity.

People who lack confidence often do not have many friends, and are missing out on important social skills. Without confidence, it is nearly impossible to get a good job, meet new people, and succeed in life. When it comes to confidence, there is a balance point. The ideal point to be at would be the middle, in between overconfident and unconfident. Most people are at this point, but there are many who are at either of the two extremes.

For those who are overconfident, it is sometimes a dangerous characteristic, and it is essential to think things out thoroughly before attempting to conquer them. Larry Kersten said, “Before you attempt to beat the odds, be sure you could survive the odds beating you. ” This is a warning, or piece of advice to people who think they can do anything and beat the odds. It is very important to stop

and think about the consequences before one acts.

At the end of the play, Macbeth is fighting Macduff, and is very confident that he will win the fight. He says, “I bear a charmed life, which must not yield to one of woman born. ”(5. 8. 12-13). He says this because the witches told him that he would not be able to get killed by one born of a woman, so Macbeth is feeling very overconfident.

To which Macduff replies, “Despair thy charm, And let the angel when whom thou still hast served Tell thee, Macduff was from his mother’s womb Untimely ripped. ”(5. 8. 13-16).This completely blind-sides Macbeth because he is overconfident in himself and is expecting to win the fight between Macduff and him.

Now he feels intimidated, and the play follows the saying “pride comes before the fall”. Macbeth was prideful and overconfident, and then he is slain by Macduff and the play ends shortly. This is one of the best examples of “security” being one of mans greatest downfalls. If Macbeth had not been so overconfident, he might have been better prepared for his fight with Macduff and perhaps could have maybe even forced a victory in his favor.

Because he lets his fatal flaw get the best of him, Macbeth is destroyed and in the end, Macbeth pays the ultimate price for his foolish overconfidence, his life.
