For its celebration of a real-life military hero, this Indian film uses an action-movie style that makes even the Top Gun films look like wussy, pinko pacifist tracts.

Major might be an action drama for the most part where guns and bombs become the norm after a certain run-time, but the film does a good job of opting for a personal tone instead of a jingoistic one.

Major (2022) Review: The Biopic Of A Commando

' src=

“I won’t die in an accident or die of any disease. I will go down in glory”. The life of Indian commando Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan signifies this quote. The Telugu film industry has come out with a biographical-action drama titled “ Major ” which is based on the life of this daredevil hero who sacrificed himself for the nation while countering the 2008 terrorist attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai. Major has been directed by Sashi Kiran Tikka , co-produced by Mahesh Babu , and its story and screenplay have been written by Adivi Sesh who himself stars in it as Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan . The film released on June 3, 2022 in both Telugu and Hindi languages all across theaters in India.

Starring Adivi Sesh as Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan

Major showcases the life of Indian commando Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan from his childhood days to his becoming the commanding officer of the Operation Black Tornado. Operation Black Tornado was an Indian military operation which was led by Major Sandeep for countering the terrorist attacks which occurred on November 26, 2008 at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai. The story goes on to reveal the risks taken by Major Sandeep and his commando team to counter the terrorists, and save the lives of many hostages at the hotel before he got killed during the counter terrorism operation.

Major (2022) Official Trailer (Hindi):

Appreciable Concept By Adivi Sesh

The story of Major has been written by Adivi Sesh himself who starts as Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan in the film. His decision to bring out such a tragic life story of a brave Indian commando before the audiences is praiseworthy. Previously two or three films have been made in India which are based on the 2008 terrorist attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai.

major movie review and rating

Saiee Manjrekar and Adivi Sesh in a scene from Major

However, the story of Major is different from those films, and is unique, interesting, and engrossing as well. This film entirely focuses on the life and contributions of this braveheart commando apart from showcasing the 2008 terrorist attacks. This beautiful story focuses on Major Sandeep’s childhood, youth, love life, and his efforts to become a commando in the Indian Army. The story of Major aptly picturizes the helpful nature of Major Sandeep who was always ready to help any person in need or distress.

Fantastic Screenplay

I must say, the screenplay of Major is fantastic. The first half of the movie is lightly entertaining. The first half focuses on Major Sandeep’s early life, and his efforts to become a commando by joining the Indian Army. The first half won’t bore you, and instead will make you curious about what’s coming next. You will be engrossed with light comedy, and Major Sandeep’s love life along with a few romantic tracks.

Prakash Raj as Major Sandeep’s father, and Revathi as his mother in Major

When the second half comes, it is time for some intense action! Here you will see how Major Sandeep and his commando team barges into the terrorist-occupied hotel to directly face them. You will witness intense gun fights, hand-to-hand combats, and scenes showing the rescue of hostages inside the hotel. The creativity involved in the recreation of the 26/11 terrorist attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel is praiseworthy. The tense moments shown inside the terrorist-occupied Taj Mahal Palace hotel are thrilling, and will keep you engrossed till the end. The action choreography, the action scenes, and stunts are powerful and exciting. You will get to see the real drama unfold right before your eyes where Indian commandos take on terrorists, as it happened on November 26, 2008 at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

Heart-Touching Dialogues

Though Major is originally a Telugu film , the dialogues for its Hindi version have been written by Akshat Ajay Sharma. After hearing these dialogues, you will become familiar with the efforts of the Indian Army in protecting our territory. These dialogues are impactful enough to arise patriotic emotions within you, and you will feel your sentiments getting driven towards the soldiers and our motherland.

Saiee Manjrakar and Adivi Sesh in a romantic track from Major

Outstanding Performances

Adivi Sesh has given a fantastic performance as he looks very enduring as an Indian Army commando. He is in great shape, and seems to be in his top form for this role. The action scenes he performed, and his dialogue delivery are such as if he was born to play the role of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnnan. No doubt, after watching this movie I understand how this idea of making a film on the life of Major Sandeep, and choosing to star himself as the daredevil commando occurred to him. He probably knew that that this role was meant for him only!

major movie review and rating

Adivi Sesh as Sandeep Unnikrishnan, and Saiee Manjrekar as Isha Agarwal in a scene form Major which portrays their their school days

Saiee Manjrekar has a small role as Major Sandeep’s love interest Isha Agarwal in Major. However, she carried out her role diligently, and seemed to have great chemistry with Adivi Sesh.

Prakash Raj is an outstanding character actor and as Major Sandeep’s father in this movie, he delivers a powerful performance to make you emotional, and even make you cry in certain scenes. In one scene, as Sandeep forgets his appointment letter for the Indian Army and leaves from his house in an autorickshaw, his father can be seeing running behind the autorickshaw to hand over the appointment letter to him . This scene will surely make you emotional. In another scene, Prakash Raj as Sandeep’s father can be seen watching the terrorist attack live on television while his son was fighting the terrorists. In that scene if you watch his expressions, you will surely opine that he is one of the top-class actors in the industry. Revathi as Major Sandeep’s mother too gave an excellent performance in this film.

Appealing Cinematography

The camerawork by Vamsi Patchipulusu was extraordinary, and appealing. The wide angle indoor and outdoor camera shots in the movie were enticing. The best thing about the camerawork is that it precisely captured the expressions of each and every character which will in turn get you attached to these characters while you watch the movie.

major movie review and rating

This great cinematography was coupled by a sharp and crisp editing done by Vinay Kumar Srigineedi and Kodati Pavan Kalyan which kept the scenes compact, and informative. The scene placements were accurate which kept the movie’s flow steady till the end.

A Masterwork By Sashi Kiran Tikka

I must say, the filming has been very maturely handled by director Sashi Kiran Tikka . Major is a very well made family movie with a free-flowing narrative. It is entertaining for all age groups of audiences, and you surely won’t get bored watching it irrespective of your age. In fact, it is a unique 26/11 story on one commando’s life. This makes the plot interesting, and engrossing as compared to any other 26/11 movie.

The Watchability

major movie review and rating

The 26/11 terrorist attacks on the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai was a very sad incident in the Indian history, and due to the emotions attached many people might not want to rewatch Major. Even some Indians may not like to re-live those disastrous memories and worse, they may even choose to not watch Major at all, in spite of it be being an amazing biographical action-thriller. Thus, even with a great plot and screenplay, this movie may fail in terms of watchability as well as rewatchability. However, I personally feel that this is a movie worth the watch.

The Verdict:

While deciding on this biopic, the producers had registered two titles for the film, “Major” and “Major Sandeep”. After entering into talks with Major Sandeep’s family for obtaining the rights for making this movie on the soldier’s life, the title of the movie was finally decided as “Major”.

major movie review and rating

The real Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan based on whose life and contributions this biopic has been made

The songs in this movie are average, and have been recorded in Hindi, Telugu, and Malayalam versions. Major is basically from the Telugu film industry but was shot simultaneously in Hindi language as well. This was done for promoting this film as a “Pan-India” film as its story is set in North India where people speak mostly Hindi. The film was shot within a total of 120 days across 75 locations.

Overall, Major is a classic film version of a true story which deserves to be showcased on the big screens. I believe that this film is an effective homage to a 26/11 hero apart from being a relentlessly entertaining biopic. This movie is sure to move you with empathy, and patriotism. If you want to witness the 26/11 terrorist attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, and the efforts of the Indian Army commandos to counter the attacks and save the hostages, just go for Major !

Major Movie Review

Release Date : June 03, 2022

123telugu.com Rating : 3.5/5

Starring: Adivi Sesh, Saiee Manjrekar, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prakash Raj, Revathi, Murali Sharma

Director: Sashi Kiran Tikka

Producers: Sony Pictures Films India, GMB Entertainment, and A+S Movies

Music Director: Sri Charan Pakala

Cinematography : Vamsi Patchipulusu

Editor : Vinay Kumar Sirigineedi & Kodati Pavan Kalyan

Major is Adivi Sesh’s dream project and has been in the making for two years now. It has finally been released and let’s see whether it lives up to the hype or not.

The story is quite simple and depicts the life of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan from his childhood. Adivi Sesh plays Major Sandeep and Saiee Manjreka plays his wife. The film showcases how Sandeep Unnikrishnan has a fascination for the uniform, joins the army, gets a call to save civilians during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, and how he sacrifices his life and makes his country proud.

Plus Points:

In the past, there are a number of films that have been made on the Mumbai 26/11 attacks but where Major scores brownie points are the emotions. The story and screenplay are by Adivi Sesh and he gets the emotion behind the soldier’s life right and sets the film in a perfect manner.

When it comes to performance, Major is Sesh’s career-best as he has lived in the role of Major Sandeep. From the school-going boy to the young soldier to the brave warrior, Sesh showcases beautiful transitions in his character. This is the first time Sesh has done such massive action blocks and he is a treat to watch on screen with his handsome looks.

Saiee Manjrekar did not get much scope to showcase her talent in Ghani but here in Major, she gets ample scope and performs beautifully. She has a meaty role in the first half and her chemistry with Sesh is superb. Prakash Raj and Revati as Sesh’s parents bring a lot of emotional depth to the film.

The entire second half is filled with racy action and there are many scenes that give you a high. The manner in which action is mixed with patriotism is quite good. Shobita Dhulipala does a good job in her role and the manner in which her character is linked to the climax is very good.

Minus Points:

The film starts on a very slow note. The school day scenes and the aim Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan has in his life to become a soldier should have been established in a better manner.

The first fifteen minutes are slow and there are a few scenes that are quite predictable. Also, more drama should have been added to the husband-wife issues to make the film dramatic. Mumbai police played a key role in the 26/11 attacks and many valiant soldiers lost their life but this aspect has been ignored totally.

Technical Aspects:

Adivi Sesh’s films are known for their solid technical aspects and the same happens in Major too. The production design and sets laid to showcase the Taj hotel are top-notch. The solid camerawork only enhances the visuals and showcases the thrills in a solid manner. Dialogues are good and so were the lyrics. Music by Sricharan Pakala is very good but his BGM is something else.

Coming to the director Sasi Kiran Tikka, he has done a very good job with the film. Without drifting away from the emotions, he showcases what happened in the 26/11 attacks in a detailed and perfect manner. The way he ended the film with an emotional high is the best part of his narration.

On the whole, Major is a patriotic action drama that lives up to the hype. Beautiful performances, endearing drama, and solid thrills are basic assets of the film. If you ignore the slow start, Adivi Sesh leads from the front and takes you on an emotional ride, and makes this film a good watch this weekend. Go for it.

Major Review: A Well-Made Biopic

Major Review: A Well-Made Biopic

Movie: Major Rating: 3/5 Banner: Sony Pictures International and GMB Cast: Adivi Sesh, Saiee Manjrekar, Sobhita Dhulipala, Revathi, Prakash Raj and others Music: Sricharan Pakala Director of Photography: Vamsi Patchipulusu Editor: Vinay Kumar, Pavan Kalyan Action: Sunil Rodrigues  Production design: Avinash Kolla Producer: Mahesh Babu, Anurag Reddy, Sarat Chandra Written and directed by: Sashi Kiran Tikka Release Date: June 03, 2022

As a child, Sandeep Unnikrishnan (Adivi Sesh) has only one dream: to wear a uniform (Navy or army). Initially, his parents (Prakash Raj and Revathi) are disappointed by his career plans, but they allow him to pursue this dream when they realize that he is serious about serving the nation.

After joining the army, he quickly becomes NSG commander and gets promoted to the trainer of commandos. He also gets married to his childhood buddy Isha (Saiee Manjrekar).

When terrorists attack Mumbai in 2008, Sandeep comes forward to lead the mission despite the fact that trainers don’t involve in operations. The rest of the film is his brave act.

Artistes’ Performances: As Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, Adivi Sesh delivers a fine performance. He shows a huge improvement in emotional sequences. His physique and body language fit well. Sesh holds the film entirely. Without a doubt, it is his best act.

Prakash Raj and Revathi are terrific again. Prakash Raj’s emotional speech is the highlight of the film, while Revathi’s breakdown towards the end is heartwrenching. Saiee Manjrekar gets her due finally. She was miscast in Varun Tej’s ‘Ghani’, but makes her presence felt here. Sobhita Dhulipala and Murali Sharma are effective in their short roles.

Technical Excellence: Backed by big production houses like Sony and superstar Mahesh Babu, the team of “Major” spent money liberally to get a rich and superior look.

The production design and the cinematography are first class. In fact, they are a major strength. Sricharan Pakala’s background score is perfect. Abburi Ravi’s dialogues in the climax portion are superb.

Highlights: The patriotic feel Emotional penultimate sequences Slick action, technical output Adivi Sesh as Major Sandeep Cinematography and BGM

Drawback: Regular traits of biopic Some cinematic liberties

Analysis “Major” follows the life of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, an Indian army officer. Sandeep was killed in the 2008, when a terrorist organization carried out bombings and shootings in Mumbai on 26th November in Mumbai.

A couple of films including Ram Gopal Varma’s Bollywood film and web dramas have dealt with the subject of the 26/11 attacks. But “Major” deals with the same topic differently by equally focusing on the life and progression of Sandeep’s career and his actual bravery during the 26/11 operation.

The makers (directed by Sashi Kiran Thikka with the script by Adivi Sesh) have divided the film into two parts – his life from childhood to his army career forms one part. The first half of the film is all about this. The later part of the movie is devoted to the Mumbai operation. The writer and directors have linked every incident in his life to his decisions as a soldier. Small incidents in his childhood and his teenage life had shaped his thinking.

At one stage of his life, Sandeep faces a question – What is it meant to be a soldier? He doesn’t have the right answer. Sandeep promises the commander that he’d live his life as an answer to his question. This scene reverberates in the line of battle when he leads the Mumbai operation. The two halves of the film are structured in that way.

The story has limitations as it entirely focuses on one man with a larger mission. Thus, the makers have tried dramatizing romantic episodes, and his early life for commercial reasons. But somehow, the first half of the film is not that effective, while the final portions are highly emotional and compelling.

As said, the film gets its mojo in the penultimate portions, and the drama heightens further towards the end. The final 20 minutes are terrific and riveting. You don’t leave the theatre without welling up with emotions.

The action, the performances, the dialogues, the patriotism feel…everything is synched well. Director Sashi Kiran Tikka shows finesse in handling the subject.

The action blocks in the final moments are terrific as well. The speech that Prakash Raj delivers is the icing on the cake. Unlike other movies, it is not preachy. “Sandeep should be not be remembered how he died, but how he lived,” Prakash Raj says. The film, no doubt, focuses on that part – his life.

Coming to its shortcomings, the focus on early life has slowed the proceedings. The predictable scenes between the wife and husband are stretched beyond a point. Some portions remind us of commercial movie traits. The episode of Shobita is not entirely convincing but added some value to drama. Also, the film paints the Mumbai mission as a one-man show, like a typical commercial movie.

All in all, “Major” is a perfect tribute to the brave heart - Sandeep Unnikrishnan. The film is all heart. Adivi Sesh and his team have pulled off an engaging biopic that rouses a patriotic feel.

Major Review: A Soaring Tribute To Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Who Comes Off As More Myth Than Man

Major Review: A Soaring Tribute To Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Who Comes Off As More Myth Than Man

Perhaps the Indian Army would be well advised to keep recruitment booths outside theaters screening Major, such is the force of its conviction, its rousing, aspirational, thumping celebration of the soldier's sacrifice, of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan's sacrifice, an army officer who was killed in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. It is a bulls-eye precise movie, cranking up emotions when the action tires and injecting a spray of bullets when emotions cloy. Adivi Sesh who wrote the film, also takes up this rose-tinted role — of a charming man with a charmed family (Revathi, Prakash Raj), who, in death, assumes the shape of a mythical beast, the glittering North of the collective Indian moral compass. And therein lies my hesitation, too.

It is certainly worrying that sometimes in cinema, we are not willing to distinguish a biography from a hagiography. Something about the tone of these films, the pitch of its love for its protagonist, the inability to frame their frailties as frailties but as funks, makes it feel like an obituary clogged with superlative adjectives, and like obituaries which don't age well, written in the blinding haze of adulation and mourning, such movies, too, feel like punctures of hope, bright flares that are prone to being dimmed out just as quickly.

These movies ask, of what use is critically examining a personality who gave so much? Of what use is critically examining an institution — the Army — that gave so much?

Let me be the heathen for a moment and do just that, because what the movie leaves behind, refuses to delve into, says as much about the film than what it chooses to depict. On 26/11, the police control room received their first call at 9:48 p.m. from Leopold Cafe. By 11:30 p.m. the Maharashtra Government had reached out to the National Security Guard, where Sandeep Unnikrashnan served. To cobble together the 200 odd commandos in the middle of the night required bringing them from their different locations to the base and making sure the commandos and the equipment could fly with the weight. It couldn't. By the time the logistics — including the planes — were sorted and the commandos were flown in to begin their operations at the Taj, it was 9 a.m. the following day.

But what to do with a film begins to feel less like a biopic and more of an offering?

This lag — which was heavily criticized due to the bureaucratic disorder, leading to the NSG setting up regional hubs in cities to reduce the reaction time — is only hinted at in the lighting of the film, when we see the nighttime carnage, when we see the daylight when the operations take place, and between the scenes we must assume the delay.

This is not a film that wants to ask how we could have saved more lives, but is content showing the lives saved — Sobhita Dhulipala, in a glam-black dress, representing the moisturized, grief-stricken faces of those the major saved. Frustration is not supposed to be felt towards the system but the enemy. It's a neat format, neither showing nor demanding your doubt. It yearns for a mythic status for its protagonist. Fair enough. Sandeep Unnikrishnan's parents were heavily involved in the making of the film, and which parent would be okay with inviting criticism of their dead child or their intentions?

But what to do with a film begins to feel less like a biopic and more of an offering? Take for instance the primal question of why does Sandeep feel this gushing urge of patriotism for our country. Where do we locate the seed of this pride? It is, according to the movie, the theatrics, the melodrama, the histrionic parade of power that he saw as a child during Navy Day, coupled with the desire to wear a crisp, respectable uniform. He fell under the spell of awe. That is, perhaps reason enough.

And just like the film does not make a distinction between passion and duty, it refuses to differentiate the Major's bravery from his saviour complex. (His last words, in the middle of a gun-fight was, "Don't come up, I'll handle it.") The last pose he strikes in this film is him slumped against a pillar, hand with a gun cocked resting on his folded knee. Even in death, his hand never goes limp. A man might die, but a myth folds itself over and over, reincarnating to a beacon of hope, but also a figure of disbelief. The second half of the film, which takes place entirely inside the Taj, lacks a gritty, immersive cinematic tension. Even as the action scenes fly by in a fog of gunfire, even as the background score tries its best to produce stakes with its rhythmic gunshot sounds, there is no sickening unease or a kind of convulsive tension that Mumbai Diaries 26/11 and The Attacks of 26/11 produced . Almost as though the film wanted to be pleasant to watch even as it showed one of the most unpleasant hours in the history of this country. The tension it produces is entirely cosmetic. A bug — or perhaps feature — that even Goodachari, the director's previous film had, where its attempts at manufacturing tension in action scenes included vigorously shaking the camera. (Another striking parallel between the two movies includes a Prakash Raj father-figure who is reluctant to have his son, again played by Adivi Sesh, to work for the country.)

The sheer scale of Sandeep Unnikrishnan's life demands not just beauty and bombast, but truth, too. But like an impossible triad, Major chose beauty and bombast.

If you are sensing my reluctance to fall under the spell of the movie even as I am swept away by its emotional logic, you are right. Unlike Shershah where the acting was uniformly, excessively reliant on the easy beauty and perfume-like screen presence of its lead pair, here, the beauty is grounded by passion and a natural charm that cannot be performed, cannot be learned. Adivi and Saiee Manjrekar — even though she turns into a weepy wife in the second half for reasons that are unimportant to the film's larger purpose — and Sobhita's glamorous reaction shots cobble together a film that is as glossy as it is emotionally potent.

Even what feels like a hammered approach to establish his love for his mother (Revathi who weeps and screeches grief like no one else does) — like the shot of him lying on her lap — produces this extremely sharp stab of sadness up the nose when, towards the end, we see a faded image of Sandeep on his mother's lap, a replication of which we saw early on in. Submit. Submit. Submit, the movie yells at you as tears slip down. Here is a Malayali man who spent his growing years in Bangalore, his youth in a cantonment in Hyderabad, guns blazing in Kashmir, working in Haryana, and then, finally, shipped off to Mumbai where his life ended in a blaze of heroism. The sheer scale of his life demands not just beauty and bombast, but truth, too. But like an impossible triad, Major chose beauty and bombast, leaving the question of truth to baffle skeptical reviewers like me, scratching our heads out of the theater, deeply moved by the movie and just as deeply doubtful of its charm.

Review: ‘major’ is a befitting & moving tribute to sandeep unnikrishnan, major is based on the life of sandeep unnikrishnan, who was martyred during the terrorist attacks in mumbai..

“How many more men do I have to lose?”, asks a superior, and Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan gestures, ‘one’. Major is about this one person who loses his life while saving many.

Major , directed by Sashi Kiran Tikka , is based on the life of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who was martyred during the terrorist attacks in Mumbai in 2008. The film is a tribute to him, but it’s a lot more than that.

'Major' doesn’t just talk about the valour and sacrifice the Major makes, but also recognises the sacrifices his wife and parents have to make while he is out protecting the country.

The film not only honours Major Unnikrishnan , the martyr, but also focuses on Sandeep– the person. It’s a film that will leave a lasting, heart wrenching impression on you.

Major is based on the life of Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who was martyred during the terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

A still from Major.

Unnikrishnan, played by Adivi Sesh, is fascinated with the ‘uniform.’ The glimmer in his eyes is evident and his yearning to save people, without thinking of the consequences, has been established right in the beginning.

Adivi essays the role of a Major almost effortlessly– be it an action or emotional scene, Adivi makes you believe.

Playing Adivi’s childhood sweetheart and wife is Saiee Manjrekar (filmmaker Mahesh Manjrekar’s daughter) – a well-sketched and strong character that she plays with minimal flaws as her inexperience reflects in the acting.

Prakash Raj and Revathi play Sandeep’s parents and, as always, bring the characters to life with every dialogue. As grieving parents, the duo has given a performance that will make you cry with them as they mourn the loss of their son. Prakash Raj’s speech in the films will win hearts and drive you to tears.

Sobhita Dhulipala plays a businesswoman, Pramoda, who checks into the Taj on the day of the attack. Her character, though introduced later, is an important one and carries the mantle effortlessly.

The first half of the film is about Major Unnikrishnan the person – the son, his dreams, his friends and his love, both for the uniform and Isha. It’s the second half of the film that explores Unnikrishnan’s life further as the Major of the National Security Guard (NSG). As Unnikrishnan finds himself struggling to be present as a husband and asks for a leave, he is unfortunately called in the same day as tragedy hits the city.

Major is based on the life of Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who was martyred during the terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

As a trainer of the NSG, Major Unnikrishnan is not supposed to be a part of the rescue mission facing the terrorists– but he challenges that decision and joins the team.

We all know how the 26/11 attacks played out, but director Sashi Kiran Tikka and writer Adivi Sesh have told the story, of course taking cinematic liberties, with comfort. The screenplay and direction work for the film. This 2 hours 10 minutes action-drama is not preachy, and the film does not lead with a patriotic tone.

The action sequences in this film are directed and choreographed beautifully by Naba and Sunil Rodrigues and do justice to the film.

The cinematography by Patchipulusu Vamsi will leave you in awe. The most heart-wrenching shot in the film is towards the end, when Unnikrishnan saves the lives of hundreds and is there by himself, doing what he knows best – protecting.

The background score feels unnecessary in most parts. it’s loud and used in places just for the sake of it. Silence can be a more powerful tool and wish they had used it more in the film.

As someone who has covered the 26/11 attacks, like many other journalists, I felt uneasy and found myself choking up the minute Major Unnikrishnan got off the bus and stood in front of Taj.

It’s a film that will stay with me, make me think of not just of Major Unnikrishnan, his family and many others who lost their lives but also about all the other men in uniform who continue to serve and protect, and their families.

“What is a soldier?”, Unnikrishnan is asked by his superior while training. It’s a question he asks himself even as he braves terrorists in Mumbai on 26/11. Watch this one as he answers the question for you.

‘Major’ movie review: An emotional tribute that works

Director sashi kiran tikka and actor-writer adivi sesh’s tribute to major sandeep unnikrishnan is all heart.

June 03, 2022 03:01 pm | Updated 05:43 pm IST

Sangeetha Devi Dundoo

Adivi Sesh, Saiee Manjrekar, Revathy, Prakash Raj and Sobhita Dhulipala in the film

There are different ways to approach a biopic of a soldier who was killed on a mission. One would be a clinical approach that delineates the soldier’s mettle, culminating in a nail-biting finish that is replete with minute details of the risky operation. The other would be through an emotional lens, attempting to capture the man behind the hero. Director Sashi Kiran Tikka and actor Adivi Sesh who has written the story and screenplay of Major , inspired by the life of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan who was killed in the 26/11 attacks of 2008, choose the latter method. Their attempt is not perfect, but effective enough to leave viewers moved and thinking of soldiers who stake everything for the nation. And thankfully, there are no jingoistic overtones.

During pre-release interviews, Sashi mentioned how Sandeep’s parents recalled memories of their son, in a non-chronological manner, with the stronger memories popping up first. In the film, K Unnikrishnan (Prakash Raj) recalls Sandeep’s (Adivi Sesh) memories in a similar, non-linear manner. We all know how Sandeep’s story would end during the 26/11 attacks. But Major is not only about him fighting till his last breath, saving hostages at The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, from the terrorists. It is about Sandeep, the person, whose loyalty to the nation came above his responsibility towards his parents, sister and spouse.

Cast: Adivi Sesh, Saiee Manjrekar, Sobhita Dhulipala

Direction: sashi kiran tikka, music: sricharan pakala, languages: telugu and hindi.

Certain portions feel airbrushed, like the childhood scenes that try to establish Sandeep’s fascination for the uniform. And later, when he intervenes in a domestic abuse incident, unmindful of the risk. We get that Sandeep put others’ safety above him, but maybe these segments could have been written and depicted more effectively. The Army training montages are picturised beautifully but do not show Sandeep’s transformation. Did he fail, face setbacks and learn from them? We do not get enough of that learning curve. He is earnest, determined and aces nearly everything.

But these are minor misgivings in the larger picture. As a plot device, narrating Sandeep’s story through his parents Unnikrishnan and Dhanalakshmi helps to give the emotional gravitas. There’s a delicate, sensitive manner in which the relationship between Sandeep and Isha (Saiee Manjrekar) is portrayed, with its breezy romance, warts and all. At one point, when Isha laments that no one would know the sacrifices made by a commando’s family, it hits the right spot.

A deeply moving segment also involves Isha, and later Sandeep, telling each other at crucial moments, ‘It is better you do not know’. Abburi Ravi’s dialogues convey a lot without melodrama.

A large portion of the film unfolds within The Taj Mahal Palace hotel where the Mumbai police and the elite NSG commandos need to make sense of the maze ahead of them. The terrorists have the blueprint of the hotel and the access cards, while the protecting forces only have their courage, apart from their rifles. There are several wow moments during the operation, almost like a mainstream action thriller. But it is done without diluting the battle that is on. There is also a terrific segment where Sandeep manipulates the media which is live telecasting, unmindful of the harm it is doing to the hostages.

Vamsi Patchipulusu’s cinematography is an asset, moving from the cosy, warm portrayal of Sandeep’s early life and then shifting to the action mode. Sricharan Pakala’s music befits the breezy romance and family drama.

One can either mull over how much cinematic liberty and dramatisation was required to make this tribute or soak in the narrative that touches the right emotional chords. What makes this tribute work is also the performances all around. Adivi Sesh is effective in showing young Sandeep’s innocence and later as the soldier who tells his peers, ‘don’t come up, I’ll handle them’. This is an internalised performance and his career best. Anish Kuruvilla as the hotel manager and Sobhita Dhulipala as businesswoman Pramoda Reddy are good in their brief, pivotal parts. Saiee Manjrekar is good as Isha. Murali Sharma is effective as always. A word of praise for Prakash Raj and Revathy. Their emotions in the closing moments of the film might move you to tears.

Major lives up to its promise of paying a befitting tribute to Sandeep Unnikrishnan. Do watch out for the end credits to catch snapshots of Sandeep’s life.

What's Behind

Adivi Sesh is known for his versatile performances and different genre of entertainers. When he decided to do the biopic of Major Sundeep Unnikrishnan, every gone got excited and expectations soared when Mahesh Babu collaborated with the team to turn it into a pan India entertainer. The makers started premiering the film ten days ahead of the theatrical release, showing utmost confidence in the film's content. With Major Sundeep Unnikrishnan's parents giving a green signal to Adivi Sesh for the project, rejecting many Bollywood top directors and production houses, curiosity increased among movie lovers. The film hit the screens on June 3, 2022. Let us see what effect Major had on the movie lovers.

Story Review

Sandeep Unnikrishnan(Adivi Sesh), son of middle-class parents K.Unnikrishnan and Dhanalakshmi (Revathi) from Bengaluru, who was scared during his childhood, aspires to join the Indian Navy after watching a Naval Fleet Review. At first, he gets rejected by the Navy and despite being disappointed and much against the wishes of his parents, however, inspired by his girlfriend Isha (Saiee Manjrekar), he finally joins the Army.

Sandeep becomes the trainer of the NSG's elite commandos and how he reacts when terrorists take seize of the Taj Hotel in Mumbai during the 26/11 Attacks, and what role Pramoda (Shobita Dhulipala), NSG chief Shera (Murali Sharma) players, should be watched on the screen.

Artists, Technicians Review

Adivi Sesh worked on the script for more than 15 years and finally decided to get going. He along with director Sashikiran Thikka decided not only to show the valor of Major Sundeep Unnikrishnan but also to showcase the major developments in his life. In the process, the duo has taken many cinematic liberties. They have been claiming that Major shows how Sundeep Unnikrishnan was martyred but how he lived the life of a Soldier and how he dealt the personal and professional life. As such most of the first half concentrated on Sundeep Unnikrishnan's childhood, inspiration to join the defense forces, and the blossoming romance. This resulted in deviation from the main story, the 26/11 Attack for which Major Sundeep Unnikrishnan remained in the hearts of all.

The proceedings in the first half turned out to be slow though at times entertaining. However the way director Sashikiran Thikka showed the training at NDA, Khadakwasala, the world's premier military training institute, turned out to be a laughing stock. He should have paid more attention to the training of Sundeep Unnikrishnan and how he coped with it. Except for a couple of scenes that looked silly and out of sync, the most important aspect, how he was trained as a meticulous soldier remained untouched. The first half ends with terrorists taking seize of Taj Hotel. This paved way for the end of the emotional-filled first half to the action-packed second half. Second half turns quite predictable and is witnessed in many films based on the 26/11 Mumbai Attacks.

Adivi Sesh enacted gravity-defying stunts and one felt that stunts could have been choreographed in a more natural and realistic manner. At times, it was shown that Adivi Sesh gave orders to his superiors rather than take  from them. Sashi Kiran Thikka's screenplay ended up confusing viewers. Suddenly in the middle of the 26/11 Attack and the NSG commando operations, the scenes of Major Sundeep Unnikrishnan's personal life, parents, lover, marriage, etc come out from nowhere, leaving all surprised and wondering what was wrong.

Patchipulusu Vamsi's with his cinematography elevated the scenes giving them the required impetus. Sricharan Pakala's background music added value to the scenes. The editing of Vinay Kumar Sirigineedi, and Kodati Pavan Kalyan couldhave been far better as there are many drags in the film. Dialogues of Abburi Ravi turned out to be a mixed bag. Some of them are powerful and effective but at times in trying to highlight the value of solider and by going on defining, he overdid it and ended up irritating the viewers.

Adivi Sesh performed the role of Major Sundeep Unnikrishnan quite effectively and effortlessly. He showcased various expressions and emotions according to the situation. Be it showing his love towards his parents, romancing his lover, dealing with the breakup or training his commandos and taking on the terrorists, he carried the film on his shoulders. He made an impact with his performance in the film.

Prakash Raj performed the role of a father quite well. His role is loaded with emotions and so is that of Revathi who played the role of Sandeep's mother. Both looked natural and realistic. Saiee Manjrekar looked beautiful and gorgeous initially on-screen but later looked dazed. She got a limited role and at times her scenes deviated from the film's narration. Murali Sharma is good as the NSG chief. Others performed according to their roles.

Rating Analysis

Adivi Sesh's Major directed by Sashi Kiran Thikka is not an authentic biopic on Major Sundeep Unnikrishnan. Sashi Kiran Thikka and Adivi Sesh have taken many cinematic liberties and in the process diluting the soul. However, by balancing the entire first half with the emotions in various stages of Major Sundeep Unnikrishnan's life and the second half by showing the valor of the soldier, they paid floral tribute to the martyr who saved many during the 26/11 Mumbai Attacks. Sashi Kiran Thikka's uneven and confusing screenplay and direction, Adivi Sesh's loopholes in the story, and Abburi Ravi's less impactful dialogues prevented the film from turning out to be stronger. Considering all these points, CJ goes with a 3 rating for Major.

Major Movie Review: MAJOR is embellished with an engaging second half and bravura performance.

Embellished with an engaging second half and bravura performance by adivi sesh, major pays a fine tribute to the fearless hero of the 26/11 terror attacks, major review {3.0/5} & review rating.

MAJOR is the story of a brave soldier. The year is 1995. Sandeep Unnikrishnan ( Adivi Sesh ) resides in Bengaluru with his father (Prakash Raj), his mother (Revathy) and sister Sandhya. Sandeep is a student and has already made plan to join the defence forces. He gets rejected in the Navy and then tries to enlist in the Army. He succeeds and turns out to be a brave as well as a kind soldier. He marries his childhood sweetheart Isha ( Saiee M Manjrekar ). By the time it’s 2008, he has been posted in Manesar, Haryana as the training officer of the 51 Special Action Group of National Security Guard (NSG). He’s so dedicated to his work that he’s unable to give time to Isha. On November 26, 2008, he gets a letter from Isha that compels him to fly to Bengaluru immediately, where she’s based. However, he has to cancel the ticket when he learns that Mumbai gets rocked by terrorist attacks. He flies with his regiment to Mumbai and heads to the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel to rescue the citizens and eliminate the terrorists. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Movie Review: Major

Adivi Sesh's story is a bit clichéd and yet, works. Adivi Sesh's screenplay (script guidance by Abburi Ravi) is quite effective, especially once the 26/11 track commences. He peppers the narrative with some exciting and touching moments. Akshat Ajay Sharma's Hindi dialogues are conversational while a few one-liners are hard-hitting.

Sashi Kiran Tikka's direction is first-rate. He faced a tough challenge as MAJOR is in the same space as SHERSHAAH [2021], which is also a biopic of a brave, deceased soldier, with special focus on his love life. The director, surprisingly, comes out with flying colours as he ensures MAJOR doesn’t give a déjà vu of the Sidharth Malhotra-Kiara Advani starrer. He has treated the film in a very commercial manner. Also, while he succeeds well in the action and thrilling scenes, it’s the emotional aspect which works big time. On the flipside, the first half does not hold too well, especially the love story, as it does not seem organic. The romantic track in the second half, meanwhile, acts as a roadblock. The second half also seems a bit stretched.

MAJOR starts off on a fine note. The childhood and romantic portions are okay. The training scenes initially seemed routine. Thankfully, the scene where Sandeep hands over the glass of water to his colleague and when he bends his knee down in respect in the army mess are quite novel. The intermission point comes at a great juncture. Post interval, except for Isha’s flashback, the film is engaging. The track of Pramoda Reddy (Sobhita Dhulipala) adds to the tension and is well woven with the main narrative. The last 20-25 minutes are superb. The film ends on a very emotional note, though the end speech by Prakash Raj could have been more impactful.

Saathiya – Major | Adivi Sesh & Saiee M Manjrekar

Adivi Sesh delivers a smashing performance. He looks dashing and also convincing as a trained soldier. Unlike Allu Arjun or Prabhas, he’s not yet known to the Hindi audiences through the dubbed versions of his films. However, after MAJOR, he’s sure to get a lot of prominence across the country. Saiee M Manjrekar looks cute but her performance is not upto the mark. Prakash Raj is dependable as always. The scene where he runs to give the form to Adivi is memorable, thanks to his superb acting. Revathy is first-class. Sobhita Dhulipala is quite good in a supporting role. Murli Sharma (Shera) is fine. The actors playing Sandhya, the foreigner girl Shirley and the villainous army colleague Harsh also deliver good performances.

Sricharan Pakala's music is poor. 'Oh Isha' and 'Saathiya' are well placed but these tracks won’t have a shelf life. Sricharan Pakala's background score is quite powerful and enhances impact.

Vamsi Patchipulusu's cinematography is splendid as its neat and uncomplicated. Avinash Kolla's production design is rich. Sunil Rodrigues' action is one of the USPs of the film. The violence is kept in check and is not gory at all. Rekha Boggarapu's costumes are realistic while the ones worn by Saiee M Manjrekar are glamorous. Annapurna Studios's VFX is first-rate. Vinay Kumar Sirigineedi and Kodati Pavan Kalyan's editing is sharp.

On the whole, MAJOR pays a fine tribute to the fearless hero of the 26/11 terror attacks. The film is embellished with an engaging second half and bravura performance by Adivi Sesh. At the box office, it might not open huge, due to limited buzz and awareness. However, it has the potential to grow big with positive word of mouth.

Major movie review

major movie review and rating

Film: Major Cast: Sesh Adivi, Saiee Manjrekar, Shobita Dhulipala, Prakash Raj Director: Sashikiran Tikka

Story: Sandeep Unnikrishnan is a do-gooder with the potential to be a hero. No wonder the Army was his natural choice. He became a trainer in the National Security Guards, the elite force that was called into action when Mumbai came under a deadly attack by terrorists on November 26, 2008. The film is about how Sandeep tries to save as many lives as he can during the attack.

Analysis: It’s the story of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, a brave soldier who sacrificed his life for the nation; but it also depicts the 26/11 attacks. And director Sashi Kiran Tikka submits to the vision of the story told by screenplay writer Adivi Sesh.

The narration is through the eyes of the protagonist's father (Prakash Raj). The makers have used a back-and-forth style to showcase Sandeep’s life and sacrifice – it covers his childhood, college life, romance with his to-be wife, and then the anti-terror operation.

The film delivers what it promises – a portrait of a brave-heart.

Major is Sesh's one-man show for the most part. He wants to tell the story sincerely. And he does it with conviction. And this is undoubtedly Sesh’s career best performance. He has managed to capture the true essence of Sandeep’s life and his heroic efforts impressively in the latter half of the movie.

The action choreography is engrossing in the second half. The terrorists have been shown as ruthless but not in a cliched way. This is where Major shines — it doesn't make the villainy in-your-face. Its focus is firmly on the hero, his bravery and exceptional thinking.

The film’s emotional appeal, particularly towards the end, leaves everyone with moist eyes.

Vamsi Patchipulusu's cinematography and Sricharan Pakala's music are stand-out technical features. Saiee Manjrekar as Sandeep's girlfriend gets as much voice as the hero's parents.

However, the film is not without flaws. Perhaps the pace in the first half could have been steadier. Also, the director took his own time to establish the characters.

It has been many years since the Mumbai Attacks took place. Major is the first attempt to tell a biographical story of that incident. This is not about the terrorists, their ideology, their hatred. This is about Sandeep, his parents, his patriotism, and his poignant moments. The film is also about the daredevil action in the middle of a spine-chilling terror attack.

On the whole, Major movie is a fitting tribute to Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan - it’s a classic film version of a story that deserves to be told!

Cast - Adivi Sesh, Saiee Manjrekar, Prakash Raj, Revathi, Murli Sharma, Sobhita Dhulipala

Director - Sashi Kiran Thikka

Producer - Mahesh Babu, Anurag Reddy, Sharath Chandra

Banner - GMB Entertainments, Sony Pictures, A+S Movies

Music - Sricharan Pakala

Adivi Sesh’s last outing was in 2019, with Evaru. After a gap of more than two years and a suspense thriller, Adivi Sesh is coming to theaters with a biographical action film on Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan. The movie is directed by Shashi Kiran Thikka and is produced by Mahesh Babu. Adivi Sesh played the role of Sandeep. The movie is in theaters and here is the review.

What Is It About?

Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan (Adivi Sesh) is a training officer at NSG and leads the team 51 Special Action Group. The Major along with his team gets into the mission to save hostages from the terrorists at Mumbai’s Hotel Taj Palace. What Sandeep does to handle the situation and save the hostages in the mission is all about Major.

Performances

Adivi Sesh is phenomenal in the role of Sandeep Unnikrishnan. The actor’s hardwork and dedication to fit in the role of a Major is clearly visible althrough. The resemblance with the real Sandeep Unnikrishnan is a bonus here. He did really well in some emotional scenes and did even better in action scenes in the second half.

Saiee Manjrekar acted well and this remains one of her best roles for a time. She emoted well and appears mostly in the first half of the movie. Sobhita Dhulipala gets a small yet crucial role, and she did well. Prakash Raj and Revathi acted as Sandeep’s parents. It is a cake walk for Prakash Raj with these kind of roles and he melts us down with his touching words in the climax. Murli Sharma and other actors did fine in their respective roles.

There were many films made on 26/11 attacks, but ‘Major’ mainly deals from the vision and acts of the unsung hero Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who saved many hostages. Major is all about a man for whom the country comes first, no matter what.

The first half is partly the childhood of Sandeep towards establishing his dream to become a soldier and later it moves on to the love life until he becomes a NSG officer. The screenplay goes back and forth bringing on his personal life to picture and some of those emotional scenes are really well.

The scenes from his love life come and go just as an intention for establishing the relationship between them two. The director kept the scenes with family and his girfriend crisp so to keep up the pace in second half. There are few impressive scenes like Prakash Raj bringing the NDA admission letter to Sesh, that reveals his heart wanting him to join the army, while his mind doesn’t. Also a scene with Isha, where he pays her a sudden visit and later learns she also planned to meet him, is touching.

The army training song Jana Gana Mana is very good. The background music althrough the movie is intense and captivating.

By the end of the first half, the director prepares us for an action packed ride coming in the second half. The interval bang is a highlight where he lands outside the Taj Mahal palace right at the time the terrorists conduct visible blasts in the hotel.

The pace in the second half of the movie is kept intact and the action packed scenes are very engaging. The two important scenes that remain the high for the film are the swimming-pool scene where he takes out the terrorists in a style and the scene where he answers ‘one’ when Murli Sharma asks how many soldiers should he be prepared to lose. The answer to the question, ‘what does it mean to be a soldier’ is always intriguing and impressive.

The director brings on some emotional moments between the action episodes, like Sandeep’s mom not picking up his call not knowing that it was his last one. The scene is really touching and the expression of Prakash is excellent.

The pre-climax and climax episodes are fully packed with action. The scenes where Sandeep handles the four terrorists and rains down the bullets is perfectly shot and is a thrilling episode.

The tough decision of real Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan to save a life and his thinking during the time are really commendable. It takes a great valour to say ‘Don’t come Up, I’ll handle them’ and it was Sandeep’s last message in 26/11 attacks.

The Major gives us a moment of pride and an emotional breakdown when Sandeep’s father recalls what he felt when he sat where Sandeep breathed his last. His words at Sandeep’s memorial that say the life of Sandeep Unnikrishnan should be remembered and celebrated, are very emotional. While the words by Prakash Raj already touched the audience, the slides of Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s life in the end, are sure to leave them in tears.

For the generation of people who could not recall any other name from 26/11 attacks except Kasab’s and for the generation of people who know 26/11 as an attack from the history, Major is a perfect film to watch. Major is a great tribute to the Indian hero Sandeep Unnikrishnan and like his father said, Sandeep will be remembered for the way he lived.

Bottomline: A Salute To Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan

Movie Review:  Major Director:  Sashi Kiran Tikka Producers:  Sony Pictures Films India, GMB Entertainment, and A+S Movies Music Director:  Sri Charan Pakala Starring :  Adivi Sesh, Saiee Manjrekar, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prakash Raj, Revathi, Murali Sharma Release date:  3rd June 2022

Rating : 3.5 /5

Major Movie Review:  Adivi Sesh, Saiee Manjrekar, Sobhita Dhulipala starrer Major, helmed by Sashi Kiran Tikka has hit the theaters today. Let’s see the story of Major.

Story:  Major is all about Sandeep Unnikrishnan who got martyred in 26/11 Terror attacks in Mumbai in 2008.  But it doesn’t just talk about the sacrifice the Major makes, but also recognizes the sacrifices of  his wife and parents have to make while he is out protecting the country. The movie is about how Sandeep Unnikrishnan  is fascinated with the uniform, joins the army,  and save civilians during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. And  how he sacrifices his life.

 Plus points:

  • Story & Screenplay
  • Performance
  • Cinematography

 Minus points:

  • First half slow

Performance:   Adivi Sesh in the role of  Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan has given his career best performance. This is the first time Adivi Sesh has done such massive action blocks. Prakash Raj and Revathy’ performance as the parents of Major Sandeep Unnikrishna are fantastic.   They bring the characters to life with every dialogue. The romantic chemistry between Adivi Sesh and  Saiee Manjrekar, also strikes a chord. Saiee Manjrekar has a meaty role in the first half.  Sobhita Dhulipala in the role of a businesswoman, Pramoda, who checks into the Taj on the day of the attack, is good. Her character is  important one and carries the mantle effortlessly.

Technical:  The story and screenplay are provided by Adivi Sesh himself.  The narrative switches into thriller mode, when the story of the film shifts to the Taj Hotel.   The camera explores Adivi Sesh’ face from different angles. And the cinematographer tries to show how good he looks in the movie.   The cinematography by Patchipulusu Vamsi is top notch.   The most important scene in Major, when Unnikrishnan saves the lives of civilians. The BGM is loud and used in places just for the sake of it. Dialogues are good and editing is fine. The production values are top notch.

Analysis:  In 2008, several iconic buildings in South Mumbai were attacked. One of the buildings where hostages were held was the 100 years old Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was the team commander of 51 Special Action Group deployed in the hotel to rescue the hostages.  In the process, he lost his life,  and became the first NSG commander to die in action. Coming on the work of Sasi Kiran Tikka, the way he ended the film with an emotional high is the best part of his narration. Though the first half is slow, the  second half is filled with racy action.

Major Review : Emotional Tribute to Major Unnikrishnan

Major Movie `

Major Movie Review`

Telugu360 Rating: 3/5

After delivering a series of hit films like Kshanam, Goodachari and Evaru, Adivi Sesh is betting big with Major, a patriotic attempt that is based on the life story of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan. Sashikiran Tikka directed the film and it had Saiee Manjrekar, Prakash Raj, Murali Sharma, Revathi, Shobita Dhulipala in other important roles. Sony Pictures India in association with GMB Entertainment and A Plus Movies produced Major and the film is heading for a wide release today. Here is the complete review of Major:

Story :  Adivi Sesh wanted to narrate the life story of Sandeep Unnikrishnan to the nation. 26/11 Mumbai attacks will stand as one of the deadliest attacks that happened to India. A group of NSG Commandos risked their lives and saved several innocent Indians in the operation. 31-year-old Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan got martyred in the attack. Sandeep (Adivi Sesh) aspires to serve the country. He shares a close bonding with his father (Prakash Raj) and mother (Revathi). They are against his thoughts of joining the Army or Navy.

Sandeep falls in love with Isha (Saiee Manjrekar) and the duo gets married. Sandeep loves to serve the nation instead of spending time with his family. Sandeep emerges as the top Training Officer for NSG Commandos. He trains 51 NSG team which will be asked to handle the Mumbai terror attacks. Sandeep as a Training Officer will not be allowed to participate in the mission as per the protocol but he joins the team. The rest of Major is all about the battle with the terrorists and how Sandeep saves several lives in Taj Mahal Hotel, Mumbai.

Major is not only about the deadly terror attacks in Mumbai but it also narrates about the story of a brave patriot who always desired to save the country. Sandeep Unnikrishnan had his own family and life before he joined the Indian Army. The film presented his childhood days, his love story and about his interests and how he thrived to help others by standing by their side. The first half narrated the story of Sandeep Unnikrishnan and the second half was focused on the deadly 26/11 attacks. The struggle of Sandeep when he was asked about the real meaning of Soldier was well presented. The Mumbai attacks episode starts right before the interval. The first half of Major is decent and is well loaded with emotions, love story and patriotism.

The second half is all about how Sandeep and his team handles the terrorists and saved the lives of the innocents. Director Sashikiran Tikka handled the film in his own style and kept the audience engaging. The last 20 minutes of the film is the major highlight of Major. The way Sandeep kills the terrorists without the support of his team and how he gets martyred is presented well. The film ends with the speech of Prakash Raj and the episode is quite emotional. The second half of Major is thoroughly impressive.

Major is a film that is made with enough conviction without getting deviated to the major plot. The achievements of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan are narrated to the world. The emotional family drama will impress the audience. Major gets a strong backing from the technical team. The cinematography and the sound design are the major highlights of the film. The action episodes are well presented. Without preachy episodes, the director narrated the film on a simple and emotional note.

Adivi Sesh fits well in the role of Sandeep Unnikrishnan and his hard work is visible on screen. He excelled in the emotional scenes. Prakash Raj and Revathi get prominent roles and they delivered their best. Saiee Manjrekar looked simple and decent in the role of Isha and she did her best. Shobita had a small role and she did her part well. Murali Sharma is impressive in his assignment. All the other actors did justice for their roles.

Major is a technically well made film which pays tribute to Major Unnikrishnan. The emotional component of the film, especially the climax, works. Adivi Sesh and director Sashikanth deliver an appreciable film.

Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore make magic in May December

Todd Haynes' latest film is a creepy, campy masterpiece.

Christian Holub is a writer covering comics and other geeky pop culture. He's still mad about 'Firefly' getting canceled.

major movie review and rating

As with all euphemisms, the title of Todd Haynes ’ new film sounds cute, almost quaint…while hiding a strange darkness underneath. “May-December” is the gentle sobriquet often applied to romances where one partner is much older than the other—think Sofia Vergara and Ed O’Neill in Modern Family . The bleak irony of applying it to a relationship that involved statutory rape and no small amount of psychological damage is the first stroke of brilliance in Haynes’ latest masterpiece, but far from the last. Creepy and campy in equal measure, May December will certainly leave your head spinning.

Hollywood movies are so full of childhood fantasies (even this year, with superheroes on the downswing, the box office has been dominated by Mario and Barbie ) that it’s a welcome relief when a film comes along with something meaningful to say about contemporary adult concerns. Even better when such a film actually depicts a violent collision between adult life and the sensibilities of childhood. But that’s not all. May December ’s fictionalization of the real-life Mary Kay Letourneau story also riffs on true-crime obsessions, age-gap romances, and the blurred lines between journalism and performance in the age of social media…all things that feel very relevant to life on the internet in 2023.

Julianne Moore stars as Gracie Atherton-Yoo, a woman who — like the real-life Letourneau — spent years in jail after having sex with an underage boy. Also like Letourneau, Gracie resumed the relationship after being released from prison and has had several children with her now-husband Joe Yoo ( Charles Melton ). The viewer arrives in their world alongside Elizabeth Berry ( Natalie Portman ), an actress who is set to play Gracie in an upcoming movie and wants to access the “truth” of what really happened, beyond the headlines. As such, Elizabeth often presents herself as a kind of journalist, seeking out interviews with other figures relevant to the story (such as Gracie’s first husband, her criminal defense lawyer, and so on) while also spending lots of time with Gracie and Joe.

The involvement of Portman’s protagonist transforms May December from being the kind of rote true-crime story that fills streaming service queues to a meta-fiction meditation about how media can warp people’s perceptions of themselves (and, therefore, their realities). It quickly becomes apparent that, despite the hate mail sometimes left on their doorstep, Gracie and Joe live in a secure bubble without ever thinking too much about how their relationship began and what that might mean for the nature of their lives. But the more questions Elizabeth asks, the closer their bubble comes to popping.

When age-gap relationships come under public scrutiny, it’s often one where the older partner is male and the younger female. Gracie and Joe’s relationship upends that dynamic, and it’s not the film’s only role reversal. Elizabeth, after all, isn’t a reporter seeking to interview Gracie; she’s an actress who is trying to embody her. The more time the two spend together, the more Elizabeth comes to dress and even act like Gracie, making the viewer wonder who’s really the driving force in their interactions. While Gracie speaks with a lisp, Joe talks with a stutter — both indicators of stunted childhoods, or pieces of performative victimhood? Your perception may change as the movie goes on. Initial impressions of Gracie’s relationships with her neighbors and her eldest son (Cory Michael Smith) also mutate over the course of the movie — not unlike the monarch butterflies that Joe keeps in special habitats throughout their home.

Portman gives a hypnotic performance at the center of May December . She’s the audience surrogate, learning facts of the case alongside the viewer — but she is not an objective observer. She seeks to take the material of these people’s lives so as to absorb them into herself, and the film doesn’t shy away from the unsettling aspects of that process.

It’s also to Portman’s credit that she didn’t direct May December herself, after screenwriter Samy Burch brought her the script with that in mind. Instead, she sought out Haynes, whose past work on movies about women struggling to survive in a patriarchal society and the mysterious dark sides of public icons made him uniquely capable of walking this story’s many tonal tightropes. Directors get a lot of credit for successful films, and rightly so — but not everyone has to seek out that role. Sometimes it’s just as valuable to use star power as a producer to secure the right creative talent for the job and then protect them from pressure.

Moore has worked with Haynes several times before, and May December carries some knowing echoes of their past movies. When Gracie insists that her college-bound son drink milk to overcome his supposed “severe calcium deficiency,” she sounds just like Moore’s self-described “milkaholic” in Safe . The “forbidden romance” aspect of Gracie’s marriage to Joe may also remind some viewers of Far From Heaven . But be careful: Every time you think you have a grasp on what Gracie wants or why she does what she does, Moore pulls the rug out from under you.

As he did in Safe , Haynes carefully constructs a cinematic world in May December where the environment reflects (and perhaps inspires) the characters' feelings. When Joe is explaining to Elizabeth how he fell for Gracie as a young boy working with her at a pet supply store, he says, “She saw me” — just as golden-hour sunlight peeks from behind the Georgia swamp they’re walking through. At a later point in the film, two characters’ unsettling argument is echoed by rumbling thunderclouds. Haynes’ camera often perceives these characters from around a corner, or from the other side of a mirror, or inside what they think is a safe space — always giving the viewer the simultaneously icky and exhilarating feeling of being a trespasser on private secrets.

Like so many movies that first premiered at this year's film festivals, May December was bought by Netflix after Cannes and will have a limited theatrical release before hitting the streaming platform at the top of December. Either experience should have its benefits: In a theater, you can share the discomfort with others, while watching at home (where it will exist side-by-side with so many straight-faced true-crime programs) should make the viewing experience even more alarming, in the best possible way.  Grade: A-

The Piano Lesson

In August Wilson’s play “ The Piano Lesson ” — revived on Broadway in 2022, adapted with care and much the same cast for the screen by Malcolm Washington — Berniece hasn’t played the piano since her mother died. It just sits in her living room, reminding her of everything her parents, and their parents before them, endured so that subsequent generations could be free. In literary terms, the piano is a powerful and none-too-subtle symbol, the thing that represents her family’s achievement and sacrifice. Carved into the precious heirloom’s polished wood surface are the faces of her ancestors.

Popular on variety.

Seeing as how “The Piano Lesson” deals with themes of family legacy, it’s fitting that another family came together to make it. As you may have guessed, Malcolm Washington — making his feature directing debut — is the son of acting legend Denzel Washington, who found one of his great roles starring in another Wilson adaptation, “Fences.” John David Washington, who played Boy Willie in the Broadway version as well, is seven years older than his brother Malcolm, whose sister Katia joins Denzel among the film’s producers.

One could speculate about how the film’s themes resonate with the Washingtons, though “The Piano Lesson” possesses a universality unique among Wilson’s 10 Pittsburgh-set plays — the “Century Cycle,” in which the writer captured the full range of African American success and struggle, with one play per decade. While all 10 are performed regularly on stages around America, Pulitzer-winning “The Piano Lesson” encompasses the greatest span of time, drawing the spirits of previous generations into the picture — not just Sutter’s ghost, lurking upstairs, but the family members whose faces appear on the heirloom.

Though set in the ’30s, it speaks to decades of progress, contrasting those who stayed behind in Mississippi and other Southern states (represented here by the Boy Willie character) with those who participated in the Great Migration to the North, as Berniece and her daughter Maretha (Skylar Aleece Smith) did. It critiques a racist system of incarceration, which Boy Willie experienced, and the even darker legacy of vigilante justice, which claimed not just their father, but also Berniece’s husband, Crawley (whose backstory is less clearly explained).

More significant still, “The Piano Lesson” personifies the white men who owned or otherwise oppressed their family in the form of Sutter, who haunts them still. We’re told the old bigot fell down a well, but Berniece suspects that her brother must have pushed him. Boy Willie insists it was the “Ghosts of the Yellow Dog,” introducing yet another supernatural dimension to the plot. Malcolm Washington gives us Sutter’s ghost, but leaves any other avenging forces to our imagination. Instead, he sticks mostly to the living room, where Doaker and old friend Wining Boy (a terrific Michael Potts) trade stories. The two also sing, bringing fresh life into a film so preoccupied with the past.
