There are three types of resume formats:

  • Reverse-chronological format

  • Achievement/ responsibility: Either list your achievements or responsibilities in the role. Be as detailed as possible. For example, “Created a new keyword and title template for organic inbound marketing and boosted blog engagement by 20% within 3 months”.

When you explain your experience, be detailed instead of listing the general responsibilities in your role. You want the recruiter to know what you accomplished and distinguish yourself from the crowd. You can also state your proficiency level based on the NIH Proficiency Scale . 

Remember to tailor your resume to the role. 

When you submit your resume to a job board, an Applicant Tracking System filters the resumes before any recruiter sees them. The ATS (for resume) is software that helps recruiters filter through hundreds of resumes submitted to job boards. 

You should tailor each resume to the job you’re applying for to cross the first filtration process. You can do this by including the right keywords in your resume. Peruse the job description, note the crucial education, skill, and experience requirements, and mirror them in your resume. 

For example, if the job description asks for more than five years of experience in software development, your resume should state, “5+ years of experience in software development”. 

If the job description is looking for a digital marketer with social media experience, campaign management, and organic marketing, list these keywords in your accomplishments or skills. 

The work experience you list depends on your current situation. For example, for job hunters with no experience, it’s better to focus on other sections. However, it’s better for CEOs with decades of experience to list the five most recent roles relevant to the job you’re applying for and ignore your first experience as a cashier. 

List your education in reverse chronological order. For example, an education entry may appear as follows. 

  • Program Name: Bachelor’s Degree in Education 
  • Name of Institution: Warren State College
  • Years of Attendance: 2000-2014 
  • (Optional) Honors:Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude
  • (Optional) Academic achievements: Papers you’ve written and have been published
  • (Optional) GPA: 3.5 

The education section is vital if you have no work experience. Always start with the latest education achievement, and generally, avoid mentioning your high school education if you have a university education. Lastly, only mention optional features if they help you stand out and are impressive.  

The skills section is a must-have in any resume. You can list hard, measurable skills . Examples of hard skills are coding in Python and JavaScript or knowing how to make a latte.

I've been denied PTO requests on multiple occasions, which is becoming increasingly frustrating. Most of them are denied on the grounds of staffing needs. Do I have any recourse in fighting these denials? What can I do to ensure PTO approvals? – Chanette

You may indeed have some recourse in addressing these denied paid time off requests. Start by reviewing your company's PTO policy and procedures. Many employers have specific guidelines regarding PTO requests, including deadlines for submission and limits on the number of employees who can be on leave simultaneously, to ensure adequate staffing levels.

First, check if your PTO requests were made in accordance with company policy. If they were not, ensure that you adhere to the established procedures for future requests, to increase the likelihood of approval.

Given the short amount of time that a recruiter has to look over your résumé, it's a good idea to keep it succinct. Most HR professionals suggest keeping it to under two pages in order to ensure it gets a proper scan. While this might sound challenging, it's actually helpful as it allows you to make sure that every sentence counts, and is really helping to sell you to potential employers.

1. Making it too long

Similarly, having a résumé that's overly short isn't a good idea either. While a one-page résumé is often seen as being the ideal, you definitely don't want to start trimming off important bits of information in order to squeeze everything onto one page. This could mean missing out on the chance to tell your prospective employer about relevant achievements. While you might be able to impress them with this information in an interview, you have to make it to that stage first.

2. Making it too short

When you're writing about your previous experience, the more specific you are the better. Employers want to see exactly what you've achieved in order to assess your potential. Instead of simply listing off your job responsibilities, aim to provide quantifiable results that you were solely or partly responsible for. This might include things like return on investment, number of new customers, sales figures, efficiency savings or any awards or press accolades.

While you don't want to include a whole load of irrelevant information in your résumé, you also want to make sure you don't leave out anything that could potentially help with your application. Many people think it's not a good idea to add the jobs they had while at university, for example. However these types of jobs are often great for gaining soft skills such as teamwork and empathy, and a study by Wonderlic revealed that 93% of recruiters consider soft skills "essential" or "very important".

Bear in mind that the person who gives your resume its initial read through may not necessarily have knowledge in your specific job area, or be familiar with complicated industry terms. Therefore, you should try to make sure that you avoid using too much technical jargon. When listing your previous work experience it may also be helpful to explain who each company is. King Charles to resume public duties after cancer diagnosis

Although Charles continued with official state business, the diagnosis led him to postpone public engagements to begin treatment and rest.

Britain's King Charles will return to public duties next week for the first time since being diagnosed with cancer as he makes good progress following treatment and a period of recuperation, Buckingham Palace said on Friday.

Britain's King Charles will not carry out his usual summer programme and his plans will be crafted in consultation with his medical team.(via REUTERS)

In February, the palace revealed that the 75-year-old king had been diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer detected in tests after a corrective procedure for an enlarged prostate.

"His majesty’s treatment programme will continue, but doctors are sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far that the king is now able to resume a number of public-facing duties," a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said.

"His majesty is greatly encouraged to be resuming some public-facing duties and very grateful to his medical team for their continued care and expertise."

Although it was too early to say how much longer his cancer treatment would last, the spokesperson said his doctors were "very encouraged by the progress made so far and remain positive about the king’s continued recovery".

No further details about his condition or his treatment were given, in line with the usual stance on medical privacy.

While pictured and filmed carrying out some official duties in private, Charles's only public appearance came last month when he greeted well-wishers in an impromptu walkabout after an Easter church service in Windsor, raising hopes that his health was improving.

JAPANESE EMPEROR VISIT

To mark his return, he and his wife Queen Camilla will visit a cancer treatment centre in London next Tuesday, the palace said. It was also confirmed that the Japanese Emperor Naruhito and his wife, Empress Masako, would pay a state visit in late June.

However, Charles will not carry out his usual summer programme and his plans will be crafted in consultation with his medical team to minimise risks to recovery, the palace said.

The king's absence has coincided with news that his daughter-in-law Kate, wife of his son and heir Prince William, was undergoing preventative chemotherapy after tests in the wake of major abdominal surgery revealed cancer had been present.

The Princess of Wales, often known by her maiden name Kate Middleton, will herself only return to public duties when her medical team say she is well enough to do so.

Charles's health scare came less than 18 months into his reign after he succeeded from his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth, and less than a year since his coronation, Britain's biggest ceremonial event for seven decades.

"As the first anniversary of the coronation approaches, their majesties remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year," Buckingham Palace said.
