How to Improve Your Problem-Solving Skills for IIT JEE

Cracking the IIT JEE isn't just about knowing formulas; it's about applying them strategically. This guide breaks down how to level-up those problem-solving skills into a well-oiled machine for JEE success!

Why Problem-Solving Skills Matter

Complex questions.

JEE questions are crafted to assess your true comprehension of the subject matter. They go beyond simple recall of formulas and delve deeper, testing your ability to apply concepts critically and creatively. Mastering problem-solving equips you to unravel the underlying logic behind each problem, not just memorize its solution.

Time Pressure

The JEE is a race against the clock. Each second counts, and efficient problem-solving becomes your key to maximizing your score. By honing your abilities, you'll be able to approach questions strategically and navigate diverse problems with speed and accuracy, ensuring you have enough time to tackle the entire exam.

The problem-solving skills honed during your JEE preparation aren't confined to the exam hall. They transcend the boundaries of academia and become valuable assets in your engineering journey and everyday life. These skills enable you to approach challenges with a logical mindset, break down complex situations, and find innovative solutions, giving you a significant edge in all aspects of your life.

Step-by-Step Approach to Problem-Solving

Read and re-read.

Take your time: Take a deep breath and read the problem carefully several times. This might seem obvious, but identifying the exact question being asked is crucial.

Highlight key elements: Underline important keywords, numbers, and units. This helps you focus on the essential information and avoid getting lost in unnecessary details.

Visualize: If the problem involves spatial relationships or movement, creating a quick sketch can significantly aid your understanding. A simple diagram can sometimes unlock the key to solving the problem.

Connect with Concepts

Identify relevant knowledge: Ask yourself, "Which chapters or formulas from my learning are most applicable to this problem?" Don't limit yourself to a single concept. Sometimes, solving a problem requires combining multiple ideas.

Example: Imagine facing a projectile motion question. This might involve using concepts from both kinematics (the study of motion) and vector basics (understanding direction and magnitude).

Don't Panic, Plan

Break it down: Complex problems can feel daunting. To overcome this, decompose the problem into smaller, manageable steps. This makes it easier to approach each piece individually and ultimately find the solution.

Take a breather: If you get stuck on a specific step, don't panic! Instead of staring at the problem, move on to another question and come back to it later with a fresh perspective. Sometimes, a short break can work wonders.

Organize your thoughts: Make a list of the given information and what you need to find. This helps you stay organized and track your progress.

Calculate with Care

Accuracy is key: Avoid careless mistakes in your calculations. Write neatly and show each step clearly. This helps you identify and correct any errors easily.

Boost your speed: Learn some mental math tricks to speed up your calculations. This is especially helpful for simpler operations and estimation purposes.

Units matter: Never forget to include the correct units in your final answer. Units are an integral part of the solution and provide valuable context.

Check Your Answer

Does it make sense?: Once you have an answer, take a moment to evaluate it logically. Does the answer seem reasonable based on the context of the problem? This helps identify any illogical solutions that might have slipped through the cracks.

Double-check units: Ensure your answer uses the correct units. Mismatched units can indicate an error in your calculations, even if the numerical value seems correct.

Multiple methods: If time permits, try solving the problem using a different approach to see if you get the same answer. This cross-checking confirms your solution is accurate and reinforces your understanding of the problem.

Problem-Solving Hacks

Mindset matters.

Keep Practicing: The more problems you solve, the stronger your problem-solving muscles get. Practice past JEE papers and sample problems regularly.

Don't Give Up: Some problems will be tricky. That's okay! Stay calm, take a deep breath, and try approaching it from a different angle.

Confidence is Key: Believe in your abilities. With regular practice and strategic thinking, you can master JEE problem-solving.

Extra Tips to Supercharge Your Prep:

Study Group Power: Discuss challenging problems with fellow JEE aspirants. Different perspectives can illuminate solutions.

Time Yourself: Gradually increase the pace at which you solve problems to mimic exam conditions.

Analyze Your Mistakes: Learn from those missteps. Which concepts do you need to revisit?

The IIT JEE is a challenging test, but with the right approach, you can conquer it. By focusing on developing strong problem-solving skills, you'll equip yourself to tackle complex questions efficiently and accurately. Remember, practice is key, so embrace the journey, stay motivated, and watch your problem-solving prowess evolve into an unstoppable force, propelling you towards IIT JEE success and beyond!

5 Important Tips to Develop Problem Solving Skills for JEE 2024

1. read the problem carefully and note the information.

The secret to improving your problem solving skills for JEE is to examine problems as you read them and take note of all the information provided. To begin with, you may need to read a problem twice or three times to fully comprehend what information is provided and how to apply it. You will eventually be able to mentally note the provided facts as soon as you read an issue thanks to practice. For instance, when you read a Physics problem, your first reaction is to search for the numerical data and attempt to recognize it as components of the formulas you are familiar with.Β

2. Memorize the Important Formulas

The first thing you should focus on is memorizing the formulae and theorems from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in order to improve your problem solving skills for JEE. During the exam, you have to spend the least amount of time recalling any formulas or theorems. To ensure daily revision, write down all of the formulae on a separate piece of paper and glue it to your study table. You might underline the formulae that you have trouble remembering and try practicing them often.

3. Go for Quality Over Quantity

JEE aspirants sometimes set a daily target of completing a certain number of problems to increase their speed at solving questions. For example, when you first start with the syllabus, you may aim to answer 50 problems per day, and every week, you can raise the total amount of problems solved. The most important thing to keep in mind in this situation is to be aware of how challenging the figures that you solve are. It’s possible that doing 50 challenging problems in a day is similar to solving 100 simple problems in a day.

4. Try Backtracking Technique

In the JEE examination you do not have to follow all of the steps for solving every problem; instead, try going backwards using the provided answers for some problems. For example, you can put the provided answers into the formula you know to find out which one, when paired with the other provided values, meets the formula for a certain value. Backtracking using this approach saves a lot of time as you don’t have to calculate every step to get the right result.

5. Make a Habit of Using Stopwatch

For JEE candidates, tracking their problem-solving time using a stopwatch during practice would be very beneficial. For example, on day 10 of practice, you will be able to compute a problem faster than on the first day. When you start revising, time how long it takes you to solve ten problems with a timer. The next day, the target is to finish the same number of problems in less time.

How to Improve Your Problem-Solving Skills for NEET/IIT-JEE Exams - Tips

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and Indian Institutes of Technology Joint Entrance Exam (IIT-JEE) are highly competitive exams in India that require a strong problem-solving ability.

Introduction

NEET and IIT JEE are some of the most competitive exams in India. Clearing these exams requires a strong grasp of concepts and excellent problem-solving skills. In this article, we will discuss the importance of problem-solving skills in NEET/IIT-JEE exams and provide tips to improve them.

Understanding the Importance of Problem-Solving Skills in NEET/IIT-JEE Exams

Problem-solving skills are crucial for success in NEET/IIT-JEE exams. These exams are designed to test a student's understanding of complex concepts and their ability to apply them to solve problems. To excel in these exams, students need to have a deep understanding of concepts and the ability to solve problems quickly and accurately. Problem-solving skills also help students to develop critical thinking, analytical, and logical reasoning skills, which are essential for success in various fields.

Here are some ways to improve your problem-solving skills for these exams:

Focus on Understanding the Concepts

Before attempting any problem, make sure that you understand the underlying concepts. This will help you to solve the problem more efficiently. NEET/IIT-JEE exams test your understanding of the basic concepts of physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Focus on understanding the concepts and not just memorizing formulas or theories.

To solve problems effectively, it is essential to have a deep understanding of the underlying concepts. Instead of focusing on memorization, students should concentrate on understanding the concepts. They should also try to relate the concepts to real-life situations to make them more relatable and understandable.

Practice regularly

The key to improving problem-solving skills is to practice regularly. Solve as many problems as possible from different sources, such as textbooks, sample papers, and previous year's question papers. Practice solving problems regularly. One of the best ways to improve problem-solving skills is to practice previous years' question papers. This will help students to get a sense of the types of questions that are asked in the exam and the level of difficulty. Solving previous years' question papers will also help students to identify their weak areas and focus on improving them. Set aside a fixed time every day to solve practice problems. Start with easy problems and gradually move to more difficult ones.

Analyze your mistakes

After solving a problem, analyze your mistakes and understand where you went wrong and identify the areas where you need improvement. This will help you identify your weaknesses and avoid making the same mistakes in the future so that you can work on them.

Analyzing mistakes is crucial for improving problem-solving skills. Students should take note of the mistakes they make while solving problems and analyze them to understand the root cause. This will help them to identify their weak areas and work on improving them.

Take mock tests

Take mock tests to simulate the actual exam environment. This will help you get used to the pressure of the exam and identify areas where you need to improve.

Collaborate with peers

Collaborate with peers to solve problems. This will not only help you learn new problem-solving techniques but also keep you motivated. Always learn from others. Discuss your problems with your peers, teachers, and mentors. This will help you to learn new approaches and techniques to solve problems.

Learn from your mistakes

Every time you make a mistake, learn from it. Understand where you went wrong and what you could have done differently. This will help you avoid making the same mistake again.

Break down complex problems

Break down complex problems into smaller parts and solve them one by one. This will help you to understand the problem better and solve it more efficiently.

Time management

Practice solving problems within a limited time frame, as time management is critical  in competitive exams. Effective time management is essential for success in NEET/IIT-JEE exams. Students should learn to manage their time effectively during the exam to ensure that they have enough time to attempt all the questions. They should also beware of spending too much time on a single question and move on if they are stuck.

Learn shortcuts and tricks

Learn shortcuts and tricks to solve problems quickly and efficiently. This will save you time and improve your accuracy.

Stay calm and focused

During the exam, stay calm and focused. Don't panic if you get stuck on a problem. Take a deep breath and try to approach the problem from a different angle. Stay motivated and keep a positive attitude, even if you face challenges. Consistent practice and hard work will help you to achieve your goals.

By following these tips, you can improve your problem-solving skills and increase your chances of success in NEET and IIT-JEE exams.

Remember, developing problem-solving skills takes time and practice. With consistent effort and dedication, you can improve your problem-solving skills and ace the NEET/IIT-JEE exams.

Cracking the IIT: Unveiling the JEE Preparation Strategy

Embarking on the journey towards success in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) demands more than just textbooks and class notes. It requires a meticulous roadmap, a daily grind of problem-solving, and a strategic approach to tackle one of the most challenging exams in the academic realm. Aspiring to be a JEE rank holder isn’t merely about mastering subjects; it’s about crafting a holistic preparation strategy that navigates through daily, weekly, and monthly milestones. In this quest for excellence, let’s unravel the layers of an effective JEE preparation strategy, exploring the nuances from daily study plans to stress management, resource selection, and the hidden gems followed by the top-rank holders. Join us on a journey where each question solved is a step closer to success, and each strategy crafted is a key to unlocking the doors of achievement in the world of JEE exams.

JEE Study Plan and Strategy

To achieve the desired result of being a rank holder in JEE exams, you need a JEE preparation strategy that you can religiously follow daily, weekly, and monthly. The JEE study plans are rather different, forming a cohesive strategy.

Daily JEE Preparation Strategy

Your study plans for JEE exams should include solving 100–150 questions from different subjects. Solving questions daily will help you build up on the concepts you have learned and improve on them.

Weekly JEE Study Plan

For the weekly JEE preparation strategy for the JEE exams, you need to follow through with the topics taught to you in your class by your mentor that day, and by the end of the week, revise everything that you have studied during the week.

Following this strategy will help you retain the topics taught and studied.

Monthly JEE Study Plan

At the end of the month, your study plans for the JEE exams should be to summarise everything you have studied, do a small revision, and solve some sample paper questions from those topics.

JEE Preparation: Study and Time Management

Time management for jee preparation.

For a productive JEE preparation strategy, you need to be able to understand and apply the concept of time management skills to not just your studies but also other aspects of your life.

Divide your time on a daily basis effectively throughout the day for optimum results.

Plan your daily study schedule in advance, including the subjects, topics, and concepts you want to focus on that day. Do not overwhelm yourself with over-planning.

Apart from your studies, plan your day regarding your nap hours, your hobbies, friends, and family.

Stress Management for the JEE Preparation Strategy

Preparation for JEE exams comes with a lot of stressβ€”stress that can be both internal and external.

Your preparation strategy for JEE exams should also include identifying, understanding, and managing that stress. Which basically includes overcoming stress and anxiety during JEE preparation.

For more information regarding this topic, read the article β€œIIT JEE Preparation and the Struggle with Anxiety and Depression”

Reference Books for JEE Preparation

The best tip for JEE preparation that can be given is to follow the NCERT like your holy scriptures.

There is no chapter, topic, concept, or question that is covered in the NCERT that isn’t part of the JEE exam syllabus.

NCERT is the holy grail of resources for the JEE preparation strategy and study plans.

JEE Preparation Resources for Maths

RD Sharma is one of the highly sought-after authors who is suggested and followed by every JEE rank holder. Apart from NCERT and notes provided by your coaching institutes, RD Sharma is highly suggested.

JEE Preparation Resources for Physics

For physics preparation resources for JEE exams, HC Verma is quite valuable.

JEE Preparation Resources for Chemistry

OP Tandon can be quite resourceful when it comes to JEE preparation resources. You can use this as a reference point for your doubts and extra questions to solve.

JEE Preparation Strategy followed by toppers

Even though the JEE preparation strategy for every JEE aspirant can be very subjective, not the same things work for every individual, and sometimes a mix of every preparation strategy, plan, tip, and trick ends up working for someone.

Some of the JEE preparation strategies followed by JEE rank holders to crack the JEE exams are discussed in brief.

Build the Basic

A skyscraper that touches the sky beyond the clouds isn’t built without a strong and stable foundation.

Just like that, if you want to score a rank in your JEE exam, you need to have a strong basis for all the topics. Ask for help from your teachers, mentors, friends, and family, and develop a strong grasp on the basics of the topics, which will help you build on them to advance concepts.

Stress-free Hard Work

We have already discussed stress management in brief when it comes to the JEE preparation strategy.

But it is worth reiterating the same thought. Hard work is a must for cracking your JEE mains and JEE advanced, but you need to make sure that hard work is also stress-free.

Timetable for Time Management

Having a proper daily and weekly timetable for your JEE preparation can be very helpful in managing your time, goals, and deadlines.

Create a timetable as per your requirements, goals, and necessities; take the help of your teachers and mentors in formulating a result-oriented timetable.

Concentration for Fruitful Results

100% concentration is required for your studies while preparing for the JEE exams for a fruitful result.

Half-baked efforts will not suffice for anything.

Even if you study for an hour, make that hour count and be productive.

Self-Analysis for Improvement

Analyse your progress regularly with tests and question-solving. These analyses will help you identify your strengths, which can help you in your JEE exams, as well as your weak points, so that you can improve on them.

Self-Prepared Notes

Even if you receive notes from coaching institutes or mentors, try making a habit of making self-prepared handwritten notes of things you find valuable, such as important questions, topics, or concepts that can help with revision. Writing something down in your own words helps you understand and memorise things easily.

Fewer Study Hours but Productive

The biggest mistake every student, including JEE aspirants, makes is studying for longer hours and spending a lot of time studying every waking hour.

You don’t need to stretch out your studying hours for your JEE exams. A good JEE preparation strategy should be to have fewer study hours but a productive one.

A Flexible Deadline

Having a deadline for your subjects can be a great JEE preparation strategy, but making that deadline flexible can give you room for adjustment depending on the situation, like any particular topic taking more time or a delay in preparation because of something uneventful.

A flexible deadline is designed to give you less stress and more opportunities for improvement.

Mock Test for Mastering the Exam

Regular mock tests are the best strategy for the preparation of JEE exams. Mock tests are conducted regularly by many JEE coaching institutes. While choosing JEE coaching for your preparation, make sure that they have the option of regular mock tests. Β

Regular Practice

Finally, practice, practice, practice. Regular practice is the key to success in everything and anything.

The only JEE preparation strategy universal for every JEE aspirant and even rank holder is regular practice.

Ask your Mentor

Never shy away from asking your mentor for help with your JEE preparation. Your mentor can help you formulate a result-oriented preparation strategy for the JEE exams.

Proper guidance is always necessary for a hard journey, and the journey of JEE aspirants from JEE Mains to IIT is a tough one.

A good mentorship can make it all easy, but you should be willing to ask for and get help from your mentor.

In conclusion, success in the JEE exams requires a well-structured and disciplined preparation strategy. From daily study routines to stress management and utilising reliable resources like NCERT, RD Sharma, HC Verma, and OP Tandon, every aspect plays a crucial role. Toppers emphasise building a strong foundation, stress-free hard work, effective time management, unwavering concentration, self-analysis, and regular practice. The importance of self-prepared notes, maintaining productivity during study hours, and incorporating flexible deadlines cannot be overstated. Mock tests and seeking guidance from mentors are invaluable tools in this challenging journey. As you embark on your JEE preparation, remember that a comprehensive strategy coupled with dedication and continuous improvement will pave the way to success.

IIT-JEE

Logical thinking trains your mind to see a situation accurately and then conclude based on the facts. It helps to understand a situation thoroughly before coming to any sensible conclusion. IIT-JEE entrance questions your logical and reasoning abilities. The exam includes testing your memory, observation skills, pattern recognition skills, and spatial skills. Here are some tips from our IIT-JEE Dream Team experts that will help you improve your logical thinking:

1. Think unconventionallyΒ

Thinking unconventionally from a new perspective and creatively generating new ideas is called thinking out of the box! It helps in producing pictures of ideas that are unique and more efficient. Moreover, you can also try techniques like brainstorming and mind mapping (visualising information) to boost your thinking abilities.

2. Solve puzzlesΒ

Solving puzzles, sudoku, quizzes, riddles, brainteasers, etc., can immensely help increase your logical skills. Solving puzzles and quizzes requires critical thinking, observing patterns and making rational decisions. When working on a puzzle, you are engaging both hemispheres of your brain, thus giving your brain a mental workout.

3. Practice a lotΒ

The best way to boost your logical skills is to practice JEE Main and Advanced questions. Everyday practice JEE related numerical and logical reasoning questions. Extensive practice helps to clear your doubts, exposing you to new problems and enhancing your analytical skills.

4. develop curiosityΒ Β .

If you are unable to understand something, find the reason. It will help you think critically and help you decide whether that answer is correct or not. Never give up on your curiosities; ask questions and then find the best solution. Make a habit of asking questions and finding answers in your social life, real-life scenarios, and, of course, in your studies!

Brain grasping power means preparing your mind to grasp more information for an extended time. Every person has a unique grasping power. Some people might take ten minutes to understand a topic thoroughly, while others might take an hour to understand the same topic.

But any student can enhance brainpower to grasp the concepts quickly for IIT-JEE entrance by following the tips:

1. Planned Learning ApproachΒ

If you randomly select topics to study without planning or timetable, it is impossible to complete the syllabus on time. In this way, you are not improving your memory because your mind is busy wasting time and energy deciding topics to study and finding study materials.

On the contrary, if you outline an organised timetable and your study material, your brain will focus all its energy on learning instead of unnecessary work. It is why various IIT-JEE coaching centres provide study planners to their students.

Find some quiet place to meditate because it helps to lessen stress, anxiety, and depression. Meditation helps to relax your mind and to increase your concentration.

Moreover, practising meditation can significantly improve your brain function and energy level. It helps to release good hormones, increase blood flow to the brain, thus making your thinking clear and stable.

It is necessary to take a nutritious diet to take care of your body and sharpen your memory. Fuel your body with a well-balanced diet. Eat good fats containing omega-3 and nutrient-dense food. Moreover, have an adequate amount of sleep, and exercise regularly.

Your preparation is incomplete if you are not paying attention to your daily routine. Staying organised, eating a healthy diet, doing brain exercises, and indulging your brain in thinking out of the ordinary improve your brain grasping power and logical skills for IIT-JEE. Practice a lot of numerical problems and manage your time. Try to solve different kinds of questions within a limited time. Moreover, you can reach for logical and reasoning practice books to sharpen your memory and analytical skills.

How to Boost your Brain Power and Logical Skills during IIT JEE Preparation?

IIT JEE is one of the toughest entrance exams in our country. Yet lakhs of students appear in this exam every year. This exam not only tests your conceptual knowledge of subjects like Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics but also tests your problem solving analytical, logical and critical thinking skills. In all, you need to boost your brainpower to the maximum if you want to crack IIT JEE and score a higher rank. But how can one do that?

Here are some tips on how students can boost their brainpower and logical skills during IIT JEE preparation?

Best ways to improve your brainpower during IIT JEE preparation

By brainpower, we mean training your mind to grasp more and more information for a longer time. Every student has a different brain grasping power. Some students might take ten minutes to understand a topic completely while others might take an hour to understand the same topic. With the following tips, you can work on enhancing your brainpower so that you can grasp the concepts quickly and prepare well for the JEE.

  • No lazy learning approach

If you are someone who randomly selects topics to study and never makes a plan how you will complete your syllabus on time, you might not be contributing much to enhancing your memory. This is because your mind is busy deciding which topic to study every day, finding notes and related study materials.

On the other hand, if you have mapped out a monthly or weekly plan stating which topics you will study on which days and have organised all your notes and study materials, your brain is automatically motivated to study every day. This is why many IIT JEE institutes provide study planners to the students.

  • Retrieve information

When you study a concept for the first time, do not expect yourself to remember it forever. It is okay to revise and repeat what you have learned to lock the concepts in your memory. So make it a habit to revise the topics that you have learned after regular intervals.

Samar, who takes JEE coaching online from askIITians says, “as you begin revising a topic, first try to retrieve what all you remember about that topic. Some students might get scared thinking what if they are unable to remember anything out of that topic. But that’s a good thing. At least you know that you need to study that topic again with full concentration.”

  • Take care of your health

A healthy body helps in creating a healthy mind. If you are busy watching TV until midnight, getting up late and having no fixed schedule, you are spoiling your grasping power. In our IIT JEE classes, we often advocate students to follow these tips to keep their mind in a healthy state:

  • Sleep on time and sleep enough so that you wake up fresh in the morning.
  • Do not skip meals and eat a healthy diet that helps to boost your brainpower. For instance, including nuts, vegetables, milk, cereals, peanuts, egg yolks et cetera can boost your brain grasping power.
  • Exercise regularly to strengthen your mind and body. No physical activity might make you lazier and you may lose all motivation to study.
  • Mindfulness

Many students might not be aware of this term but once you understand what is meant by mindfulness, you will be amazed by its benefits. Being mindful means being in the present. Do you always stay in the present moment? Just observe your mind for one day and you will get your answer. Instead of thinking about the past or future, think about the present moment and accept it as it is. Find some time to meditate. It will help you stay mindful, reduce your stress, anxiety and depression and will strengthen your mind.

Best ways to improve your logical skills during IIT JEE preparation

Logical thinking means training your mind to think rationally so that you can understand a situation completely before coming to any conclusion. IIT JEE Main and Advanced exams test your logical reasoning skills at various stages by testing your observation skills, pattern recognition skills and spatial abilities. Here are some of the best tips from our IIT JEE coaching experts that will help you enhance your logical thinking:

  • Solve puzzles

Solving puzzles, brainteasers, riddles or quizzes can immensely help in increasing your logical abilities. These activities require you to think critically, observe patterns and make rational decisions. This is why many online IIT JEE coaching institutes are now incorporating puzzles and quizzes in their curriculum so that they have trained students well for JEE.

  • Think out of the box

What’s that? Thinking out of the box means generating new ideas or being creative. For instance, activities like painting, pottery, sketching, writing, dancing, playing a musical instrument et cetera are quite creative. You can also try concept mapping or mind-mapping, brainstorming or storyboarding to boost your thinking abilities and hence enhance your logic and reasoning.

  • Ask questions

Do not dump your curiosities. Ask questions or look for answers on your own. This not only implies your education or IIT JEE syllabus but also to real-life scenarios, social issues and situations. If you are unable to understand something, search why. As you will find some answers, you will think critically and decide whether that answer is correct or whether you need to keep looking.

  • Practice

One of the best ways to enhance your logical skills for JEE is to practice JEE Main and Advanced questions as much as possible. Understand the pattern of the exam and the different types of questions that are asked in it. Practice such questions every day. Get your doubts solved and enhance your logical skills.

The bottom line

Your JEE preparations are incomplete if you do not pay attention to empowering your memory and logical thinking skills. Staying organised, eating a healthy diet, engaging in creative activities and feeding your curiosities are some of the ways you can increase your brainpower and logical thinking. Jee Advanced Subject Wise Problem Solving Strategies

Owais Ahmad Lone

Stay with them and the concept will stay with you.

Hi there! JEE Adv. The examination is about solving a good/excellent problem related to a concept within a given time limit. Cracking JEE ADV requires excellent problem-solving skills more than anything else. So today I want to tell you about some of them that can help you crack problems easily apart from books that you will need.

Physics is my favorite subject. I love doing physics, solving problems, and analyzing various real-life situations with the help of the equation written in notes. Understanding the concepts in Physics is very important in strengthening your foundation and as you proceed, problem-solving especially in mighty Exams like JEE Adv. For studying and understanding the concepts I believe H.C Verma is the Bible. I strongly recommend reading and re-reading it from time to time for a better understanding of physics. Also do solve its problems, Although most of them might seem simple as compared to what is asked in JEE Adv. but they are worth giving a try. Once your concepts seem strong enough in a particular chapter, go on to solve your coaching modules and if you don’t go to coaching, I suggest doing D.C Pandey for further problems related to that concept or chapter. D.C Pandey or any other reliable book for that matter has different levels of problems and it is important to go through easy problems as is to go through the toughest even though the former does not appear in your main Examination.

This is for a reason. I believe that a so-called tough problem is nothing but a combination of various so-called simple problems, and it is these simple ones that carry a conceptual understanding in them. So do the simple ones patiently, in fact, try to frame more simple problems from a simple problem. Stay with them and the concept will stay with you.

Physics Diagram

Imagine the regular Inclined plane problem as shown above. The wedge is fixed and the surfaces are smooth. Given their masses as m and M solve the acceleration of m. Now go on to think about the improvisation in the same problem and what assumptions distance it from a real-life system., now imagine that the upper surface of the wedge is not smooth. Then you might go one to take the surface below wedge as rough. At last, assume that wedge ain’t fixed. Once you have got the whole thing you can play with it, like then think about the system in an elevator or a pulley binding the mass m with other mass, and so on. A simple problem led you into a complex problem through simple changes made by you. strange, isn't it?πŸ™‚ Once your concepts are strong enough, I suggest I.E Irodov , it is a very good book for gaining confidence to solve tough problems within the given time and also tests your concepts rigorously. Especially the mechanics and Electromagnetism(up to Electromagnetic Induction) part must be done patiently and with clear visualization of every problem. Moreover many problems, in JEE Adv. have the same format of solution as do the problems in this book have. I don't suggest doing Modern physics, optics, or Waves from this book. Modern physics as asked in the Exam is pretty simple as doesn't need any special preparation apart from NCERT, H.C Verma , and your Coaching assignment.

Your Confidence is a very decisive factor in an Exam like JEE Adv. and you should always try to gain confidence over a topic so that it stays with you for a long time. Confidence comes from a clear understanding of a problem which comes from extensive problem-solving. I also did S.S Krotov which is more about olympiads but you can try it if you are a physics fan.

Chemistry

Chemistry is a very interesting subject. Let’s talk about its subparts separately:

Physical Chemistry

Physical chemistry is mostly based on formulae except for the chapter on surface chemistry. Reading NCERT with full concentration is a must for excellence in chemistry. So do read it, especially the thermodynamics portion with dedication. Then I suggest going with N. Awasthi JEE for practice, it contains problems of all levels for your all-round practice. For practicing calculative problems you can also find R.C Mukerjee useful, however, I did not complete it but did its most important and relevant ones. Formulae must be revised in every chapter prior to a test, making a sheet for each chapter will be ideal.

Organic Chemistry

Organic is a very tricky part of JEE syllabus, most students have no prior knowledge in this area. GOC is the most important chapter to me, so understand it very well from the NCERT and books are given below and then move on to other ones. I recommend M.S Chouhan and your coaching Assignment for problems. Initially, for concept building, you can study L.G Wade (concepts are explained very patiently plus has a myriad number of problems and case studies) and once you have completed the chapter and done all its assignments give it a read from Peter Sykes , it will make the already strong concepts permanent and then you can solve all problems of that chapter, no matter what the level. Make notes of mechanisms only after you get them. I believe only self notes work in Organic Chemistry. Practice Mechanisms by yourself multiple times. Ask questions about them. Keep in mind the conditions of the reaction and understand how it affects the products obtained. A good problem solver always thinks about all the conditions to play safe.

Inorganic Chemistry

Believe me, it isn't boring!😎 . Studying NCERT, with full honesty is the key to mastery in inorganic. Read all the chapters, regularly and with focus. Don't try to mug up things. Try to get the concept, try to relate the concepts, their examples, and their exceptions. The books I read were INORGANIC CHEMISTRY BY J.D Lee Foreign Edition , but only the relevant parts of it, Vogel’s qualitative analysis , and of course NCERT. For problems, I referred to V.K Jaiswal JEE and NCERT EXEMPLAR apart from the coaching modules.

Mathematics

Maths is all about practice. The more you practice, the more efficient and fluent you are in problem-solving. But first, you need to make your concepts clear especially in differential and integral calculus, for which I think I.A Maron problem in the calculus of one variable is the best book. For coordinate geometry, I think S.L looney is the Ideal book.

Maths requires a lot of patience, hence keep trying until you don't land on the solution yourselves. don't look for solutions in problem books unless you are just months away from the JEE Exam when time is very precious, but ask your teacher and learn it. A good problem solver is also a patient thinker. Try to solve a problem in multiple ways and then stick to one which is most efficient for your final exam. Our teacher always told us to make a sheet for every chapter where we take note of types of problems framed in exams and general methods of doing that problem. I did and it worked out very much for me in saving time.

For more problems, you can solve your coaching assignment, PYQs, and various DPPs available online. Finally, try to apply these techniques and you will definitely see an increase in your problem-solving ability. JEE is not an Exam but an experience that transforms one’s self. The Journey makes you bold, adventurous and explorative as never before. It made me believe in my thoughts and my way of doing things. Good Luck! With problems.πŸ™‚
