Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition

Walkthrough assignments.

all mass effect 2 assignments

The Assassin: Salarian Family Data ¶

This mission can be initiated by picking up a datapad in Thane’s Recruitment mission - Dossier: The Assassin (see the walkthrough page for the exact location).

To complete the mission, you will need to find someone who has lost some precious family data. After returning to the main portion of Illium, you can find a Salarian talking about this very issue on a cell phone. He can be found at the base of the stairs in the security office located between the main trading floor and the transportation area.

Hand over the datapad to complete the task.

The Justicar: Smuggling Evidence ¶

This side-quest can be picked up, and completed, during Samara’s recruitment mission - Dossier: The Justicar . During the mission, you’ll locate a datapad which you can either hand in to Pitne For, the Volus, for some Renegade points or to Detective Anaya for some Paragon points.

Follow the walkthrough on the relevant page for the exact details.

The Justicar: Stolen Goods Found ¶

This side-quest can be picked up, and completed, during Samara’s recruitment mission - Dossier: The Justicar . During the mission, you’ll locate a terminal entitled ’ Shipping Details ’ which you have the option to either transmit the information to Thax or do nothing.

Transmitting the information will earn you Renegade points, whilst keeping it to yourself will earn you some Paragon points. The task will be completed the next time you re-visit Illium.

At the end of the mission “The Prodigal” you’ll find a Trinket on a crate.

(1 of 2) At the end of the mission “The Prodigal” you’ll find a Trinket on a crate.

At the end of the mission “The Prodigal” you’ll find a Trinket on a crate. (left), Give it to an Asari in Ilium for a reward. (right)

The Prodigal: Lost Locket Found ¶

This mission can be initiated by picking up a datapad in Miranda’s loyalty mission - The Prodigal (see the walkthrough page for the exact location).

To complete the mission, you will need to find someone who has lost a valuable trinket. This is actually quite easy to do. The individual you want to talk with is an Asari speaking on her phone about this very situation. She is located right on the path from the Normandy docking platform to the trading area.

Liara: System Hacking ¶

During your conversation with Liara T’Soni, she will hint that she has a task that she might need help with. Offer to help her and she will give you the task. She wants you to head over to the transportation hub and hack a series of terminals to gather some data.

There are three starting terminals in the area and by hacking the first terminal, another vulnerable terminal will appear nearby. You are given a minute to track town and interact with the second terminal before it becomes inaccessible and you have to start again. Fortunately, you can use the proximity meter that appears in the bottom right corner of the screen to track down where the terminal is.

Once you have hacked all three terminals and interacted with the second panels, return to Liara and the task will be completed.

The Observer ¶

After completing Liara’s previous side-task System Hacking, she’ll give you another task to track down and hack a further five terminals. Each of these terminals will give you a brief bit of information and using all of the information together, you need to identify which of Liara’s agents is a spy.

The terminals are located at the following locations:

  • Just outside of Liara’s office.
  • At the trading booth just to the left after leaving Liara’s office.
  • At the trading booth closest to the Normandy’s docking area.
  • On the large blue screen to the right of the Serrice Technology shop.
  • In the Eternity night club.
  • Once you have all five bits of information you can call Liara and let her know who you think is guilty. The correct answer is “None of the suspects fit’. Choose this option for some Paragon points. However, if you want some Renegade points, you can choose any one of the other suspects.

Whichever way you choose the mission will be completed. You can also go and chat with Liara once again for a monetary reward.

Blue Rose of Illium ¶

This assignment is located just by the shop - Memories of Illium - located by the transportation hub. You’ll know you are in the right spot when you hear a Krogan reciting poetry to an Asari.

Essentially you need to sort out the relationship between the two. Speak to the Krogan first to get the low-down. Afterwards, you can speak to the Asari and either convince her to take the Krogan back, which will net you some Paragon points, or to dump him for good for some Renegade points.

Either way, once a decision has been made, the mission will be complete.

Gianna Parasini ¶

This mission is very brief and all takes part within a couple of conversations. You need to speak with the Asari merchant at the Serrice Technologies booth at the trading floor of Illium. Use your Renegade/Paragon conversation options to ask for a discount.

Once you have the discount unlocked, return to her later and choose the ’ Special Items’ conversation option.

As soon as she gives in to let you have the new items, a scene will play and Gianna will show up to bust her. This will also end the mission.

Indentured Service ¶

For this assignment, you need to locate an Asari speaking quite loudly with a Quarian in the Eternity bar on Illium. Once you have located the pair, head over and speak to them to see what their problem is.

After the conversation, walk over and speak to the Synthetic Insights representative nearby. You need to navigate the conversation and convince her to take on the Quarian.

Once she has agreed, return to the initial quest givers and give them the good news to end the task.

Medical Scans ¶

For this assignment, you need to locate a human colonist located outside the Baria Frontiers shop located in the transportation hub area of Illium. She will recognise you and instigate a conversation to ask for your help with a medical situation.

After the conversation, walk over and speak to Erinya in the Baria Frontiers shop. You need to get through the conversation and convince her to reduce medical checks. Once she has agreed, return to the initial quest giver and give her the news to end the task.

  • 4.1 Act 3 Progression

Prologue [ ]

Prologue missions take place at the beginning of the game, in mandatory progression. At the end of the prologue Shepard receives command of the Normandy SR-2 and is free to explore both the ship and the galaxy.

Prologue: Save Joker - Story and setting

Prologue: Awakening - Create your Shepard, Tutorial

Freedom's Progress - First mission with Miranda and Jacob

Stop the Collectors - Master mission for the rest of the game

Act 1 begins when Shepard receives the Stop the Collectors master mission along with command of the Normandy SR-2 and continues until the mission to Horizon , which is activated as soon as Shepard has recruited all four of Mordin , Garrus , Jack , and Grunt . Any other missions and assignments not completed during Act 1 can still be completed during Act 2. Note that the order in which squadmates are recruited during Act 1 is entirely up to Shepard and will not affect how events play out in any way.

You will also have the opportunity to perform various assignments —some are available on Omega , some on the Citadel , and others you can discover during the process of Planet Scanning . Assignments described as N7 Assignments usually involve squad deployments and combat—effectively small missions—and provide experience, credits, and other rewards. All assignments are optional, but they help advance the story and provide the opportunity for additional rewards and items.

Act 1 Dossiers [ ]

Perform dossier missions to recruit new squad members for your team. It is recommended that you recruit Mordin first so that you will be able to take advantage of upgrades in the Research Lab on the Normandy. When these four missions have all been completed, the Horizon mission will trigger and Act 2 will begin.

Dossier: The Professor - Mordin

Dossier: Archangel - Garrus

Dossier: The Convict - Jack

Dossier: The Warlord - Grunt

Act 1 DLC [ ]

The following DLC missions and assignments can be performed during Act 1, or saved until Act 2 if desired.

Dossier: The Veteran - Zaeed

Dossier: The Master Thief - Kasumi

Zaeed: The Price of Revenge - Loyalty

Kasumi: Stealing Memory - Loyalty

Firewalker Pack

Normandy Crash Site

Act 1 Progression [ ]

When all four of the original (non-DLC) dossier missions are complete, the Horizon mission will be activated and Act 2 will begin.

Act 2 begins upon successful completion of the Horizon mission. At this point the Normandy is able to travel to Illium and new dossiers and missions become available. New assignments also become available during the course of Act 2: some at Illium, some on Tuchanka , and many new N7 Assignments open up through Planet Scanning in new systems which open up for exploration. New merchants also become available, along with new items at some of the Act 1 merchants; see the Merchants Guide for a complete list of locations and wares.

Act 2 Dossiers [ ]

Four more squadmates can now be recruited, though Legion 's mission works differently in that it does not become available until after the Collector Ship mission, and triggers additional act progression. You will need at least eight total crew members, not counting Legion, to advance the plot.

Dossier: The Assassin - Thane

Dossier: The Justicar - Samara

Dossier: Tali - Tali

Reaper IFF - Legion

Act 2 Loyalty Missions [ ]

Starting in Act 2, speaking with squad members on the Normandy will elicit requests for you to perform Loyalty missions. Securing the loyalty of your squad will both unlock new powers for them and increase the likelihood that they, and indeed Shepard, will survive Act 3. All loyalty missions are optional—they increase the power of your team but are not required to be completed for the game to progress.

Miranda's and Jacob's missions can be obtained immediately when Act 2 begins. Additional missions become available one at a time in the order listed; if the character whose loyalty mission would normally unlock is not yet present (e.g. Grunt is still in his tank, or Thane has not been recruited) then the mission of the next character present will unlock instead. Speaking with Kelly Chambers between missions will let you know which squad members you can talk to for new loyalty missions.

Gaining the loyalty of a squad member unlocks their "Bonus Power" for them to use. The first time a Bonus Power is ever unlocked, it is also added to the Advanced Training list for Shepard.

Each squad mate also has one Normandy Upgrade or research project to unlock in the research lab. Once Shepard has access to the research lab, these can be unlocked, even during Act 1, by talking to the squad members before they offer their loyalty missions and selecting the "[NORMANDY UPGRADES]" option under the Investigate heading; otherwise it unlocks automatically as each loyalty mission is complete.

Miranda: The Prodigal

Jacob: The Gift of Greatness

Jack: Subject Zero

Mordin: Old Blood

Grunt: Rite of Passage

Garrus: Eye for an Eye

Samara: The Ardat-Yakshi

Tali: Treason

Thane: Sins of the Father

Legion: A House Divided

Act 2 DLC [ ]

The following DLC becomes available for the first time when Act 2 begins. These are both large, substantial, and challenging undertakings, and offer significant rewards.

Lair of the Shadow Broker

Act 2 Progression Missions [ ]

Several key progression missions take place during the course of Act 2. Only the Reaper IFF mission may be done whenever you're ready; the other two trigger automatically.

Collector Ship - triggered a few missions after the events on Horizon. See the acquisition section on the mission page for specifics.

Reaper IFF - choose anytime after the Collector Ship mission. However , once completed, a mission countdown activates, with the possibility of significant plot consequences if the player delays much before proceeding through the Omega 4 Relay and beginning Act 3.

Await IFF Installation - triggers aboard the Normandy immediately after obtaining the IFF from the Derelict Reaper .

Act 3, also known as the Suicide Mission , begins when the Normandy enters the Omega 4 Relay , which can be done freely any time after Await IFF Installation is complete. At this point the mission sequence is locked, and the game proceeds through to the Epilogue without any intervening break for Shepard to use the Galaxy Map , complete assignments, research upgrades, etc. If Shepard survives the Suicide Mission, however, additional missions and assignments (DLC or left over from Acts 1 and 2) can then be completed.

Before entering the Omega 4 Relay and thus launching Act 3, you will want to upgrade your ship. The important upgrades are the shields, the armor, and the cannon. Tali, Jacob, and Garrus, respectively, provide these upgrades. For each of these you do not upgrade, you will later lose one team member. Upgrades will also increase the Normandy's value as a War Asset in Mass Effect 3 .

The following list shows, in order of preference, which crew member will die if you haven't upgraded a particular part:

  • Heavy Ship Armor : Jack
  • Multicore Shielding : Kasumi, Legion, Tali, Thane, Garrus, Zaeed, Grunt
  • Thanix Cannon : Thane, Garrus, Zaeed, Grunt, Jack, Samara/Morinth

Note: This tier is sorted by the characters' order of dying in descending order. Squad members on the "Multicore Shielding" list will not die if they are in your party when you fight the Oculus . Bringing Jack to fight the Oculus will not protect her if you do not have Heavy Ship Armor, nor will bringing anyone on the "Thanix Cannon" list save them from their fate.

Act 3 Progression [ ]

The Normandy Attacked - Defend the Normandy from the Oculus.

Collector Base: Infiltration - Help your tech specialist through the ventilation shaft.

Collector Base: The Long Walk - Your biotic specialist escorts you through the Seeker Swarms.

Collector Base: Final Battle - Face the truth behind the abductions and make your decisions.

Startling Red Dead Redemption 2 Clip Shows Why Players Should Think Twice Before Hunting in First-Person

The sims 4: reaper's rewards event guide, horizon 3's implied premise may mean one side quest type falls by the wayside.

In the second game in the Mass Effect Legendary Edition , Commander Shepard spends most of their time assembling a team capable of taking on the Collectors. Outside of the main narrative, though, are a bunch of side quests labeled 'assignments.' Some of these missions are found by scanning planets, others by running into people, and a few were once part of downloadable content.

RELATED:  Mass Effect 2: Every Romance Option, Ranked

These assignments help build the detailed world of Mass Effect by showing that not every issue is tied to the looming Reaper threat. Several of Mass Effect 2's side missions stand out as being better or more significant than others. For the richest gameplay experience, here is a collection of adventures that players shouldn't miss.

10 Normandy Crash Site

Mass Effect 2 Screenshot From Normandy Crash Site

'Normandy Crash Site' is among the many DLCs that are available as part of the Legendary Edition . In it, Shepard visits the wreckage of the SR-1, remembering their time as its Commander. There's no action to speak off during the assignment, as the only objective is to find and collect the former crews' dog tags.

Bioware didn't need to include gunfire and biotic powers for this quest. The emotional goodbye to the original ship and crew is enough to make it a must-play for any fans of the first game.

9 Citadel: Krogan Sushi

Mass Effect Legendary Edition Screenshot Of Krogan Sushi Assignment

While walking around the Zakera Ward on the Citadel, Shepard can overhear a conversation between two Krogans. The big brutes are discussing if there are fish in the Presidium lakes.

Players can learn what is or isn't in the water by speaking to the Groundskeeper in the Dark Star Lounge, but it's up to them what they do with the information. While it's not a long or complicated assignment, it's still entertaining and includes one of the funniest uses of the game's morality system.

8 N7: Javelin Missiles Launched

Mass Effect 2 Screenshot Javelin Missiles Launched Assignment

After completing 'N7: Blue Suns Base,' Shepard will receive a message about a colony under attack. The attackers are a group of Batarians who are planning to fire Javelin missiles at the area.

Because of the circumstances, the Commander only has five minutes to complete the assignment. Players have to forgo the typical Mass Effect tactics of staying in cover and picking shots to go for a more aggressive approach. It's always interesting when a quest can make gamers play differently than they're used to.

7 Normandy: Serrice Ice Brandy

Mass Effect Legendary Edition Screenshot Of Dr. Chakwas Drinking

While she's not a part of Mass Effect 2's long list of squad members , Dr. Chakwas is always a welcome addition to the Normandy crew. First appearing in the original game, the ship doctor is a loyal friend throughout the entire trilogy. And during 'Normandy: Serrice Ice Brandy,' players finally spend some quality time with her.

RELATED:  10 Hidden Details Everyone Missed In Mass Effect 2

The assignment only consists of one shopping ship and a conversation. However, the drunken interactions between Shepard and Chakwas are sweet, funny, and a little emotional, providing more depth to the characters.

6 N7: MSV Estevanico

Mass Effect Legendary Edition Screenshot Of Cerberus Shuttle During MSV Estevanico Assignment

'N7: MSV Estevanico' is one of the more well-hidden assignments in Mass Effect 2 . Players only find the quest by scanning Zanethu in the Hourglass Nebula, and those who never stumble across it miss out on a unique experience.

The entire mission takes place in the unstable remains of a downed freighter. Shepard has to traverse the crash site by walking across tight beams, and sometimes creating pathways for themselves. There's plenty of tension while players are finding their way around the place, with the constant feeling that the whole thing could fall at any minute.

5 Omega: The Patriarch

Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition Screenshot Of The Patriarch

The Queen of Omega, Aria, is a fascinating character. Yet, she's not the most open person. Any chance to find out more about the powerful Asari is welcome, and that's just what 'Omega: The Patriarch' provides.

In the assignment, her underling, Grizz, asks Shepard to protect the former ruler of Omega, aka The Patriarch. While Grizz delivers the message, it actually comes from Aria, as she wants the Krogan to be safe to serve as her 'trophy.' Alternatively, players can figure out their own ways of helping the once proud leader.

4 Citadel: Crime in Progress

Mass Effect Legendary Edition Screenshot Of Quarian During Crime In Progress

While on the Citadel, Shepard can come across a dispute between a Volus and a Quarian. The former accuses the latter of stealing his credit chit, and a C-Sec officer is starting to believe the Volus. Players must find out what happened to the guy's money as part of the 'Citadel: Crime In Progress' assignment.

RELATED:  Mass Effect: Tali'Zorah's 10 Best Quotes, Ranked

It's a short quest, but it's interesting to see how the Volus and C-Sec officer treat a Quarian. Not only do they distrust her, but they also show her no respect. Thankfully, Shepard can save the day and put both of these jerks in their place.

3 N7: Imminent Ship Crash

Mass Effect 2 Screenshot Of Geth Threatening Humans In Imminent Crash

The Geth are among the most powerful races in the galaxy and some of the most fun to fight. Yet, in the second game, players don't get to battle them too often. They appear as enemies in several missions, but not as often as mercs or mechs.

The inclusion of the synthetic beings in  'N7: Imminent Ship Crash' enhances the assignment. Additionally, it's another tense timed mission, as the story is about the MSV Broken Arrow (found in the Nariph system) being on a collision course with a planet.

2 Overlord: Atlas Station

Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition Screenshot Of Gavin Archer

A DLC in the original Mass Effect 2 , 'Overlord' is one of the most compelling questlines in the entire Legendary Edition . It revolves around an AI/human hybrid that has taken over several Cerberus stations.

In 'Overlord: Atlas Station,' players finally get to find out how the hybrid was created, and see all of the project lead's morally questionable decisions. The fascinating revelations, plus some horror-like tones, make it a memorable section of the game.

Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition Arrival Dr. Kenson Being Tortured

'Arrival' sees Shepard attempt to stop an incoming Reaper invasion. Unfortunately, a bunch of indoctrination individuals makes the hero's mission a difficult one. There are a few unique elements to the assignment that make it feel different from the others, such as the inclusion of a stealth section and the absence of any squadmates.

It's surprising that the game considers Arrival an assignment instead of a main mission, since it's such a big part of the trilogy's story. Without revealing spoilers, players should complete this one towards the end of the game, as it sets up Mass Effect 3 .

Task Search

Side quests.

This section of IGN's Mass Effect guide covers all of the Side Quests, known within the game as Assignments. There are over 60 different Assignments available across the game of all stripes. As such, we've grouped them across several different categories.

Virmire has two Assignments that aren't listed here, as they deal with the fate of two characters and thus are considered spoilers. Head to that section of the guide if you want to learn more.

Citadel: Side Quests

Efficient Expose Saren Guide slice10.png

These Assignments are those that take place entirely on the Citadel. What makes them unique is that they aren't all unlocked at once: instead, you unlock one group of them after you start Citadel: Expose Saren, a second group after you complete your first Mission World, and the third and final group after you complete all four Mission Worlds.

We have bespoke pages that cover efficiently completing these Assignments as soon as they unlock, however there are also a few Assignments started on the Citadel and take you to Uncharted worlds, so they're in the UNC: Side Quests section. The three Pre-Service History Assignments have their own section as well.

UNC: Side Quests

Uncharted Worlds Header.png

These Assignments are those that take place primarily or entirely on Uncharted Worlds or starships. This includes a few that are started on the Citadel, and a few that are only unlocked by completing either Feros or Noveria.

There is also a series of Assignments known as the "Cerberus Line", and two "Morality Assignments" that are unlocked by filling the Morality Bars, which have their own sub-sections.

Discovery Side Quests

Discovery Assignments Banner.png

The Discovery Assignments are a unique category of Assignments that task you with collecting various objects and resources across the galaxy by finding objects in space as well as spots on the various Uncharted Worlds.

Squadmate Side Quests

Squadmate Side Quests Banner.png

The Squadmate Side Quests relate very specifically to your three alien Squadmates: Wrex, Tali and Garrus. They are unlocked by talking to them after completing a Mission or Assignment, then talking to them and exploring more about them and their histories.

Pre-Service History Side Quests

Pre-Service History Side Quests Header.png

This trio of Assignments take place on the Citadel, and appear after you complete either Therum , Feros or Noveria . Significantly, they are tied to the Pre-Service History you chose for Shepard when setting up your profile at the start of the game, which means you will only ever be able to access one of these.

Feros: Side Quests

Varren Meat slice1.png

The Feros Assignments are available after you first clear Zhu's Hope of the invading geth. Each one tasks you with helping out the colony by venturing into the tunnels below, but notably they will have a culmulative effect on the outcome of the main Feros storyline.

The exception is Data Recovery, which is uninvolved and takes place on the Prothean Skyway and the ExoGeni Headquarters.

Noveria: Side Quests

Port Hanshan Banner.png

The two Noveria Assignments both take place in Port Hanshan. While Espionage is entirely self-contained, Smuggling is notable for being the fastest way to gain a Garage Pass and leave for Peak 15.
