I really enjoy watching the TV show Modern Family. It’s a comedy series that follows the lives of three related families. It’s filled with humour, heart, and lots of family drama. I love the characters and the way they interact with each other. Each episode follows the family as they navigate their daily lives and deal with various issues. It’s a great show for anyone looking for some lighthearted entertainment.

The show features a diverse cast of characters, including an older married couple, their three adult children, and their children’s partners and children. The show explores themes such as marriage, parenting, and relationships in a humorous and relatable way. It also touches on topics such as gender roles and social issues. The show also features many interesting storylines that are both humorous and heartfelt. It is a show that can make you laugh, cry, and think all at the same time. 2. Do you think men and women have different tastes in entertainment?

Yes, I do think so. Generally speaking, men tend to be more interested in activities that are more action-packed and competitive, such as playing video games or doing heavy sports. Women, on the other hand, tend to be more interested in activities that are more emotionally engaging, such as watching romantic comedies or going to the theatre. However, this is not always the case, as there are many people who enjoy activities that are traditionally considered to be more “male” or “female.”

3. Do you think that entertainment can be more effective than traditional teaching methods for some children?

Yes, I do think that for certain minors, entertainment can be a more successful form of teaching than traditional methods. It could engage children in learning, as it can make the process more enjoyable and less intimidating. It could introduce children to new topics and teach them important life lessons in a fun way. Entertainment could also be a great method to encourage creativity and imagination, which can be beneficial for children’s development.

Essay on My favorite TV Programme

I often sit down in front of the television to relax my mind and body as well. My favorite television show is KBC or Kaun Banega Crorepati.

It has a strong impression on people that’s why it is most widely watched TV programme. KBC is inspired by the UK show, Who Wants to Became Millionaire. It played first in 2000 with the amount of 1 crore rupee for the winner. Shahrukh Khan hosted this show in 2007 when Mr. Bachchan became ill.

It is one of the most popular reality shows on Indian television. Star plus is the channel that telecast this exciting learning programme and an exciting show.

It is a questionnaire telecast of one hour that contains fifteen questions. The list of questions is all about the general knowledge that covers almost every field. Mr. Bachchan asks these question to the contestant, and every question carries an amount of money. The first question of the game offers one thousand rupees and this amount increase with the serials of the questions simultaneously. Thus, the correct reply you give the more likely you earn money.

This game involves ten contestants every day. One sits on the hot seat that reports first in the fastest finger first. You have three lifelines that help you choose a correct answer when you are not sure of the right answer. These helplines are public opinion, fifty-fifty, and phone a friend. You have time only for a minute to reply the answer. If you are not able to respond within the provided time, you lose some of the money that you have won. Also, you helpline will expire in case if it does not respond within a minute when you go for it.

It is a praiseworthy television show. Further, most of the people watch it to explore their knowledge. The anchor of the programme, Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, makes it a funny and entertaining show by chatting with the participant and cracking lots of jokes often in between the questions. Besides, winning such a big amount is not an easy task. Therefore, countless people eagerly wait for this show. Hence, it receives immense love from the audience. I like it not only because it is anchored by my favorite actor, but also it is the only Indian show that fulfills the dreams of the citizen. A countless number of people enjoy a live show and telecast it in every region of the country for domestic viewers.

If you have to talk about your favorite TV program in part one or two of your IELTS Speaking test, this article will give you plenty of ideas. In part two, your cue card might as you to describe or talk about your favorite TV program.

Let’s look at things you can say about TV programs for a band-seven answer, including three cue cards with example answers ( go straight to the answers here ).

Types of TV Programs

Here are some examples of different TV programs. This is very useful vocabulary to know for this kind of question.

Talk show: A TV show where a host or hosts interview guests about a particular topic, or just have conversations about current events or pop culture.
Documentary: A TV show that provides information and educates viewers about a particular subject or event, usually based on facts and real-life footage.
Drama: A TV show that tells a fictional story through a serious and emotional tone, focusing on character development and complex relationships.
Soap opera: A TV show that follows the lives and relationships of a group of characters, with dramatic and romantic storylines that continue over multiple episodes.
Comedy: A TV show that aims to make viewers laugh, usually through jokes, satire, or humorous situations.
Reality TV: A TV show that follows the lives of real people in unscripted situations, often featuring competitions or challenges.
Crime/Mystery: A TV show that centers around solving a crime or a mystery, with an emphasis on the investigation and the solving of the case.
Action/Adventure: A TV show that features thrilling action sequences, often with a hero or group of heroes fighting against villains or overcoming obstacles.
Sitcom: A TV show that aims to make viewers laugh through humorous situations and character interactions, usually set in a particular location like a workplace or a family home.

Gameshow: A TV show that features contestants competing against each other in games or quizzes, often with prizes or money at stake.

What You Can Talk About

Think of any TV program (also called a TV show or TV series) that you know and like. Choose one you can talk about easily.

It might be a TV program you like at the moment or one you used to watch in the past. To describe the TV program, you could say:

What kind of show it is
What it’s about
Why you like it so much
Something interesting/surprising/cool that happened in the show
Something you learned from it
Something you remember from it
The main characters
The plot (if it has a story)

What If You Don’t Watch TV Programs?

If you don’t like watching TV, that’s fine. You could say you don’t watch much TV, then talk about:

A TV show you liked when you were younger
A TV show that someone you know likes (your friend, sister, husband, child)
The kind of TV show you might like to watch one day
Anything else you like to watch
A movie you like (just explain clearly why you’re not describing a TV show)
A series of comics or books you like (just explain clearly why you’re not describing a TV show)

Use the Past Tense To Tell a Story

In part two, it’s a great idea to tell a story. This allows you to keep speaking easily for a while.

Telling a story also lets you show off your use of past tenses.

This TV show question makes it easy to tell a story or two. You can talk about:

Something interesting that happened in the TV program
Something a character did in it
Something you learned from it
A recent episode you saw
When you started watching this program
Why you liked it so much when you were younger
Anything else you remember from this TV program

Focus on Vocabulary

If you focus on using interesting vocabulary, you’re much more likely to get a band-seven score in part two of the test.

One great way to use interesting vocabulary is with word groups.

A word group is a collection of words used to describe one aspect of someone or something.

For example, if you like an exciting drama TV program, you could use an ‘exciting activity’ or ‘gripping thing’ word group to describe it.

This word group could have words and phrases like ‘gripping, riveting, unpredictable, suspenseful, I was on the edge of my seat, my eyes were glued to the screen, cliff-hanger, nail-biting…’ and more.

You could use many of these words to describe a TV program, movie, and many other experiences.

Useful Vocabulary for TV Programs

Episode – An episode is just one part of a TV show, like one chapter in a book.
Series – A series is a TV show with lots of episodes, like a really long story.
Season – A season is a group of episodes, usually 10 to 20 episodes. For most TV shows, there is one new season each year.
Plot – The main storyline of the show
Characters – The individuals or groups that the show revolves around
Setting – The time and place in which the show takes place
Genre – The type or category of the show, such as drama, comedy, or sci-fi
Theme – The central idea or message that the show explores
Tone – The overall mood or feeling of the show
Style – The visual and auditory elements used in the show, such as camera angles and music
Narrative – The way the story is told, including the use of flashbacks, voiceovers, or multiple timelines
Dialogue – The words spoken by the characters in the show
Acting – The performances of the actors in the show
Direction – The choices made by the director in terms of camera work, pacing, and overall vision of the show
Production value – The quality of the show’s production, including special effects, sets, and costumes
Ratings – The audience viewing numbers, which can indicate the popularity of the show
Awards – Any accolades the show has received, such as Emmy or Golden Globe nominations or wins
Cliffhanger – A dramatic ending to an episode that leaves the audience in suspense and eager to see what happens next
Spin-off – A new show created from characters or storylines from the original show
Cancellation – The decision to end the show’s production, often due to low ratings or high production costs
Reboot – A new version of an old show, often with a different cast or updated storylines
Pilot – The first episode of a new show, which serves as a test run for the series
Binge-worthy – A term used to describe a show that is so good that viewers can’t stop watching and want to see multiple episodes in one sitting.

I’m going to talk about a suspenseful TV show called Breaking Bad. It tells the story of a high school chemistry teacher named Walter White, who finds out he has cancer and starts manufacturing and selling drugs to make enough money for his family.

In my opinion, the show is gripping, riveting , and thrilling, with an unpredictable storyline that kept me on the edge of my seat . From the first episode , the nail-biting suspense was killing me as I watched Walter White slowly become worse and worse as he became a criminal.

All the characters are complex , and their motivations are not always clear, which adds to the tense and electrifying atmosphere of the show.

One of the most memorable moments in the show for me was in the episode when Walter’s brother-in-law, Hank, is killed by a drug lord. The tension in the scene is palpable. There’s so much tension that you could cut it with a knife . I found myself holding my breath as I watched the events unfold. It was really shocking.

I think Breaking Bad is my favorite TV show because it kept me guessing all the time. The show’s writing and acting were top-notch , and it’s rare to find a series that can maintain such high levels of suspense and tension for such a long time.

I was glued to the screen during every episode, and the show’s conclusion was both satisfying and unexpected . Breaking Bad is an unforgettable TV series that I would recommend to anyone who loves good drama.

Personally , I love watching his documentaries after a long day at work . I find them incredibly restful, soothing, and peaceful, and they really help me loosen up and unwind .

I think my favorite David Attenborough documentary series is Blue Planet. It’s all about fish and the strange creatures that live in the sea. The underwater footage is stunning , and the way Attenborough tells the story of the ocean and its creatures is fascinating . I never get tired of watching his series.

David Attenborough documentaries help me relax after a long day at the office . I can kick up my feet and relax, putting work from my mind for a while. I can really take a moment to relax while I watch all the peaceful scenes from nature.

I think Attenborough’s documentaries remind me to take things less seriously and appreciate the world around me . It’s refreshing to watch something that’s not about work, politics, or the daily grind of life . Instead, I can focus on the beauty of nature. I always feel better for having watched them . I find them really soothing and I often feel refreshed and cheerful afterward.

I’m going to talk about a really funny comedy TV series called Friends. It’s a little bit old but I love it and think it’s hilarious. I also really improved my English by watching lots of episodes of Friends.

It’s a classic American sitcom about six main characters who live in New York City. Their names are Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey, and… and I forget the other girl’s name. They have many adventures and lots of fun together.

The show is hilarious and never fails to leave me amused and entertained . The humor is comical, witty, clever, offbeat, and sometimes whimsical and quite quirky . It often has me splitting my sides with laughter . Each character has their own quirky personality and it’s really fun to watch their interactions with one another, and all the amusing, unpredictable situations they get into.

I think my favorite character is Joey, who’s this simple but likable guy who wants to be an actor. He’s quite popular with the ladies . But all the characters are really likable and personable and very funny. Chandler is also one of my favorites. He’s a pretty zany, witty character, with a really deadpan kind of humor.

I remember one scene that really cracked me up where the group played a trivia game to see who knew the most about the others. Chandler and Joey ended up betting their apartment against Monica and Rachel’s apartment, and the competition became really intense . The questions became harder and harder. It was fantastic and a barrel of laughs to watch.

Word Group Used: Funny Object

We described a comedy sitcom so we used lots of words from the ‘funny object’ word group. Here it is:

American Broadcasting Company has done it again, making those of us who love watching TV be glued to our screen when this program appears on our screens. You might be wondering, what is this program that has made so many people wag their tongues whenever they speak of their best TV programs? Stop wondering because the answer is LOST. This program is an American Drama series that premiered on September 8th 2004. Based on an original screenplay entitled nowhere by Lieber Jeffery, this six series piece is a master piece of Damon Lindelof and J.J. Abrams. It is saddening for me that this magnificent masterpiece will end after the sixth and final season which premiered on February 2, 2010.

This series recaps the past, present and future lives of the survivors of a passenger plane bound for Los Angeles from Sydney. The plane named Oceanic Flight 815 tears apart in mid-air forcing it to crash on a pacific Island. It also recaps the lives of people who are already living in the island at the time of the plane crash. Each episode has a standard storyline on the present and future lives of the characters. The numerous clip shows that recap the previous episodes makes one want to find more about what is going to happen at later stages of the drama.

Through my observation, the shooting of this piece must have cost the directors and casts a whopping amount of money. The background and the sound tracks are so captivating to the viewers; grab a copy of this powerful drama which can be found in DVDs from your nearest movie library. I guarantee that you will enjoy this drama because it has lots of charisma and excitement. However, I am going to give you an insight into this play before you go out there and grab a copy of your own.

The survivors get to meet other people who have either faced the same fate as them or are the natives of the island. Through flash back and flash forwards, the viewers have the chance of knowing the past and the future of the many characters who cast in this drama. This drama highlights the theme of survival for the fittest; every character has to demonstrate an inner strength none of them ever knew he/she had. The island is filled with many secrets that the characters have to discover over time, first off, the character discover a mysterious smoke that keeps on appearing to individuals at different times throughout the drama. Nobody knows the significance of this smoke in the island until later on when they interact with people from the other side of the island. This smoke has its roots to a mysterious man named Jacob. This man is a spirit that appears in the form of a smoke. His mission is to protect the inhabitants of this strange island and do away with those people who try to do harm to the island.

The survivors are also set to task of tracing and killing polar bears that are out to kill and maul any of them. These grizzly bears have been living in this island for many years, whenever they encounter a human being; they kill him/her instantly. The mysterious island was surrounded with an ocean, thus, finding clean water was a problem. However, the survivors eventually discover a hidden location where fresh, cold water is running. After living in the island for some days, the Oceanic flight 815 survivors discover signs that showed that the island had been explored by people, who had reached it before them. The discovery of the ruins of a 19th century ship named The Black Rock, the remains of an ancient statue and the banker belonging to the Dharma Initiative were enough evidence that showed that this island was discovered long before they crashed into it.

I can compare this presentation to a tree; the tree will represent the entire plot, its branches represent the sub plots while the leaves and twigs represent the other story lines. The directors of this drama have brilliant minds that always blow the minds of the audience each time a new episode is released. The characters have blended well with the setting of this drama; the airplane had 324 passengers on board before the crash. From the 324 passenger on board only 71 survive, after the plane crashed, these survivors are the ones who create the characters of this movie. The first season of the drama had 5 outstanding casts played by the following characters; Mathew Fox plays Jack Foster, a brilliant spinal surgeon. In his former life, Jack has to deal with personal issues affecting his father before he dies while on a trip to Australia. While taking his father’s body from Australia to America, hell breaks loose after the plane crashes in the mysterious island.

After the plane crash, many survivors come off the wrecks of the plane wounded; therefore, medical attention is needed. Jack fits remarkably well in this task because of his expertise as a doctor; he uses his skills to administer first aid to the survivors. Later on, Jack takes on the unofficial role of the leader to the survivors; this is because other survivors found it easy to bond with him. Coincidentally, jack falls in love with one of the survivors called Kate Austen played by Evangeline Lilly. This woman is a fugitive who is on the run after killing a man she thought was her step father. This man was constantly abusing Kate’s mother and she was not comfortable with this, unknown to her, she had killed her biological father. In this drama, Kate develops feelings for both jack and another survivor called Sawyer. Of all the women who survived, Kate strikes out as a mother figure to the rest of the survivors.

Sayid Jarrah, played by Naveen Andrews is an ex-soldier, who used to torture prisoners; he is also an accomplished electrician who could fix anything. In this drama, this character uses his expertise to salvage the other survivors. He uses his ego as torturer to solicit for information from a fellow survivor. He therefore, has to leave the camp after this act because he had sworn never to torture another person ever again. Through Jarrah, the survivors try to leave the island but this plot fails after they discover the signal they were tracking was a recorded signal and had no significance.

The most lovable character in this drama is Hugo Rayes played by Jorge Garcia; he is a dependable team player who has the interests of all the survivors at heart. In his previous life, Hugo had won enormous sums of money with the synonymous number of the mysterious island. The disaster struck when he was heading home, back from Australia, where he had gone to pay a visit to a woman whose husband had used the synonymous number. According to Hugo, the winning number is cursed and their presence brings a sour taste into his mouth. James Sawyer, played by Josh Holloway is another character that is fascinating to watch, at a tender age of 8, Sawyer lost his parents. He adopted this title from a man who had caused the death of his parents and used it to con his victim’s money. During one of his endeavors of conning unknowing citizens off their hard earned money, Sawyer is arrested and deported back to the US from Australia. It was during this trip that his flight crashed to the mysterious Island. Throughout the drama, Sawyer‘s cocky and stubborn attitudes are evident. He tries to create tension between Jack and Kate; however, this trick goes against him as other survivors including Jack and Kate isolate from him. Other characters have also played an integral part in this drama to make it one of the best dramas I have ever seen.

The television (TV) is part and parcel of many households. Therefore, watching television is a culture of today’s modern society. It is a favourite past-time of many people, cutting across the culture, creed, gender and age. I must admit that I too enjoy “sitting glued” to the TV as mum often laments. Since I watch TV whole day long, I don’t blame mum. However, whenever I watch my favourite TV programme she doesn’t complain. In fact, she often sits together to watch it, the ‘National Geographic’. The National Geographic is a well-known documentary programme, focusing mainly on the ever-changing world, on Mother Earth and on nature and peoples and creatures that colour it with. Just the press of a switch and a button and ‘Hey Presto!’, the whole world is brought before me, for me to savour its beauty and wonders. Personally, I am often awed and amazed with them. I like this programme because it is very educational. It is a ‘window to the world’. By watching it, I can ‘travel’, ‘explore’ and ‘discover’ the four corners of the world. I have trekked up the highest peak and conquered Mt. Everest. I have dived down the deepest trenches. I have walked through the wilderness and be amongst the wild beasts, big and small. Thus, this programme has helped to expand my horizon and improve my knowledge and experience. I can proudly say I am no more a ‘frog in the well’. I also enjoy watching the National Geographic because it is entertaining, interesting and stimulating. I never imagined that such an educational programme can be very enjoyable. I get a chance to enjoy the kaleidoscope of sights, sounds and colours of the world and its different peoples, all in the comfort of my own home. In addition to that, this programme is of very high quality and it is produced by a team of experts, all are authorities in their own field of interest. The photographic footage is extremely breath-taking and inspiring. Besides, the narration is very accurate, informative, vivid and descriptive. Thus, I have never felt restless, distracted or bored watching this programme. The National Geographic is my favourite programme as it has helped me to ‘grow’ and ‘mature’. I have watched it since I was a seven-year-old innocent child. Now, I am more sensitive and aware of the world and Mother Earth. I learn to be more appreciative of Mother Earth and its beauty and wonders. I am more concern about the preservation and conservation of the world not only now but also for posterity. In short, the National Geographic has converted me into a more responsible citizen of the world and a caretaker of Mother Earth. It is a touching and heart-warming TV programme and I will not hesitate to recommend it to others so that they too have a chance to savour amazing moments and appreciate and care for the one and only world we live in.

I’m Diana and this is my TV programme review.

Some days ago I watched a very interesting TV program “World Inside Out”, a fascinating Ukrainian travel program. This TV program quickly became one of my favorite. The presenter of the “World Inside Out” is Dmitry Komarov. The idea to shoot the program “Inside Out” appeared during Komarov’s independent travels in exotic countries. The first episode was launched in 2010. This program is a gripping and amusing travelling adventure. Each episode is set in a new country and the main characters are ordinary people from these countries. “The World Inside Out” shows non-touristy and little-studied regions of the planet. The presenter and the shooting group always risk their lives to show people the unusual, interesting and breathtaking parts of each country. Sometimes it is even hard to believe that such places and traditions really exist. The program is very interesting because it shows how countries’ traditions and customs can differ from ours.

The programme I watched was about Japan. It was of special interest for me because I’m crazy about Japanese culture. The main points of the plot were about rare moments of rest which hard-working Japanese enjoy so much.

I like this program because it’s educational. You can see different countries and find out something new for yourself. It’s a useful program because it broadens your outlook. I can’t but mention how professional the presenter of “World inside out” is. Dmitry is a very brave person who seems to have tried everything and he presents the information in a thrilling way.

The “World Inside Out” has 12 seasons and I hope this amazing program will have many sequels. I strongly recommend it because it’s really worth watching.

Last week, the Justice Department took aim at Apple. It was the latest and most sweeping in a series of anti-monopoly cases against the Titans of Silicon Valley. Today, my colleague David McCabe on “The United States versus the iPhone.”

It’s Tuesday, March 26.

So David, there was big news last week out of Washington, and that was that the US government filed suit against Apple. And this is just one in a series of cases that the government is making against big tech. The last time you and I talked, of course, Google was the one that was going on trial. So tell me about this case against Apple.

So for five years, the federal government, through the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission, has been pursuing these investigations and ultimately bringing lawsuits into whether the biggest tech companies have broken antitrust laws. And these are laws that are designed to stop companies from throwing their power around. And they have brought a spate of these lawsuits.

They sued Google for abusing monopolies in online search and advertising technology. They’ve sued Meta which owns Facebook for allegedly stamping out nascent competition when it bought Instagram and WhatsApp. And the government sued Amazon for allegedly squeezing the third-party merchants that use its site.

And while the individual allegations in each one of these lawsuits varies, the basic argument is this, that these companies have illegally maintained monopolies or otherwise subverted competition, that it’s been bad for the economy, it’s reduced choices for consumers, it’s limited innovation, and it’s led to higher prices. And last week, the Justice Department filed one of these lawsuits against Apple. And this lawsuit is, in some ways, the most sweeping we have seen yet.

It targets what is one of the most valuable companies on the planet. Apple is worth trillions of dollars. And it takes aim at the heart of Apple’s business, a product that is recognizable to billions of consumers around the world and has changed daily life as we know it, and that’s the iPhone.

So David, the last time we talked, you taught me that simply being a monopoly in and of itself is not illegal. If lots of people like a company’s product and it ends up as a monopoly because of that, that’s OK. But if the company uses its power of bigness to keep competitors out, that’s when a company crosses into the illegal territory. So what are we seeing the government argue here?

That’s right. If a monopoly is maintained through exclusionary or predatory means, that’s when a company starts to violate the law. And that’s exactly what the government is arguing Apple has done here. And particularly the theme that they’ve hit on again and again is exclusion. That Apple excluded other companies from offering products that compete with its own services or excluded other phones or devices from interacting with the iPhone in a way that was really good for consumers, and that those things were designed to make a consumer more reliant on the iPhone and make it harder for them to switch away from the iPhone, and that all of these things built what the Justice Department is calling a moat around the iPhone.

A moat, like a moat around a castle?

Precisely, yeah, filled with alligators, drawbridge, the whole deal.

OK, so give me a better sense of this metaphor.

So think of Apple as a medieval lord of some kind. Apple’s got its castle. In the castle is the crown jewel, the iPhone and also all the people who use the iPhone because that’s the heart of Apple’s business, all the people using the iPhone, using the services Apple sells you through the iPhone.

And around the castle is this deep moat with the alligators. The drawbridge is pulled up. And the moat makes it hard to get out of the castle. It also makes it hard for competitors to get in and get at those users.

Got it. So that metaphor is clear. So what exactly does the DOJ allege?

So the first thing the government argues Apple does to build this moat is it simply doesn’t allow other companies to offer apps on the iPhone that might diminish the value of the phone to users. And there are a number of examples in the lawsuit about this. But the first one that really matters is digital wallets. So it has become increasingly common for consumers to pay for something, like let’s say you go to a coffee shop to pay by tapping their phone against the little payment terminal rather than taking their credit card out.

On the iPhone, only Apple is allowed to provide a digital wallet like that. It’s called the Apple Wallet. And the Department of Justice is saying that they don’t allow other companies to offer that kind of service because it might reduce Apple’s hold on iPhone users and make it less costly for those users to switch to a different phone and take their digital wallet with them. So that’s one example.

And by less costly, you mean it will be easier to switch out of an iPhone.

Exactly. Another way the government says Apple built its moat is by not allowing users to download game streaming apps.

What’s a game streaming app?

A game streaming app lets you play a video game like you’re watching a show on Netflix. Instead of downloading the game directly to your phone, you play it on a remote computer far away from you.

So streaming video games basically.

Exactly, streaming video games. And the government says that if iPhone users were allowed to stream video games, that it would make the phone less valuable to them. Because the iPhone has a really powerful computer chip, it can play games directly on the phone. But if game streaming makes that unnecessary, the government says why would they need the expensive, powerful iPhone in the first place?

Got it. So basically trapping them in this more expensive environment than is needed for this gaming thing.

So what else is the government alleging here?

The government says that Apple has also built its moat by making sure that the iPhone doesn’t work very well with other types of devices that aren’t made by Apple. And there’s two examples of this.

One is the smartwatch.

So Apple makes a device called the Apple Watch. It’s very popular. It tracks people’s fitness. It lets them respond to notifications and send text messages directly from their wrist.

People’s wrists are beeping all the time now.

Exactly. But other companies make smartwatches too. And the government says that the iPhone works less well with those other devices not made by Apple than it does with the Apple Watch. A prime example of this is that users can respond to notifications directly on their Apple Watch. If they’re using a non-Apple smartwatch, they can’t do that in the same way.

And the government says that that’s all an attempt to make it harder for people to leave the iPhone. Because once they own the expensive Apple Watch, they’re not going to want to switch phones and the watch. That would be much more costly, hundreds of dollars more costly.

The next example is messaging.

Right, the green and the blue like someone doesn’t have an iPhone basically.

Exactly. So I have an iPhone. And if I’m talking to someone who also has an iPhone and Apple’s messaging app, the messages are blue.

There are things like an indicator of when one of us is typing. The videos that we send are really rich. The conversation is encrypted by default, which makes it more private.

But if I’m talking to someone who has an Android, their messages are green. You don’t have things like that typing indicator. The videos can be more pixelated, the government says. The conversation isn’t encrypted.

And the government says that Apple has designed this dichotomy, the green bubble, blue bubble dichotomy, in order to create a stigma around phones that are not the iPhone, suggests their lower status, and that indeed non-iPhone users suffer from a social stigma because they don’t have an iPhone. And the Department of Justice says that this is particularly acute for teenagers and presents data that 88 percent of teenagers say their next phone will be an iPhone. And the government quotes someone at Apple saying that making messages compatible or more compatible across types of phones would just open the door to iPhone families giving their kids Androids.

Interesting. So David, I have to tell you, this is the point in the episode where I admit to you that I do not have an iPhone.

I have an Android phone and maybe I suffer from social stigma. I’m one of those green messages in your phone. In fact, I think I was this weekend.

But I guess it was about five years ago, I just stepped out of the castle and swam across the moat. And it actually wasn’t that hard. So I guess I’m wondering, how the DOJ is saying that this actually harms consumers if you can just leave like I Did What’s the actual harm?

Well, first of all, the statistics suggest switching rates are relatively low from iPhone to Android. That relatively few people have an iPhone and then they go and buy an Android.

So you’re saying, first of all, Sabrina, you’re weird.

Not weird, but perhaps statistically anomalous.

So while data suggests that not that many people switch, the government is saying that Apple has a durable monopoly over smartphones in the US. They’re saying that by revenue, Apple has a more than 65 percent share of smartphones generally and a more than 70 percent share of what they call performance smartphones. So think about high-end devices from companies like Apple, or Google, or Samsung.

And then because Apple has built this very effective system, this effective moat for maintaining that monopoly, that it does not have to compete with the Samsungs and the Googles of the world in a full-fledged way. And that the way that harms consumers first and foremost is because they don’t have to compete on price. That they can continue to charge high prices for the iPhone because there is an absence of competition here.

So essentially, the government is arguing that Apple, by dint of having this, what it calls monopoly, this captive audience basically, is charging more to consumers.

That’s right. And the government argues that there are other harms too, ones that might be a little less material, but that Apple’s monopoly might harm the possibility of future innovations. That they’re not allowing companies to go create and offer an iPhone cloud gaming service. That they’re not allowing companies to go and create an awesome digital wallet for the iPhone. That effectively, they’re making it impossible for companies to go out and invent new good things for consumers.

So the government offers one idea here, which is you could imagine another company, let’s say it’s a bank or Venmo, would offer its own digital wallet on the iPhone and could offer a benefit to users like cash back every time they use that digital wallet. And if you play that out, there could be a competitive process where Apple offers its own rewards to get people to use the Apple Wallet. But what the government argues here is that basically that whole process of competition that leads to new benefits for consumers has been short circuited by Apple when it denied the ability of other companies to put their own digital wallets on the phone.

Because the companies who would be inventing those new good things can’t go to the main platform they’d be selling it on because they’re blocked.

Right, that they’re denied from accessing that product to a big part of the market and so it’s not worth doing.

So David, just listening to you lay all of this out, it really seems like Apple is doing what every company tries to do, which is to make it hard to leave their own products and switch to a competitor’s products, keeping itself sticky. But I guess I’m wondering, is that actually illegal? Isn’t that just smart business?

Well, and that will be the question for the judge who is hearing this case.

They will have to look at the arguments laid out by the DOJ, at the arguments laid out by Apple, and figure out, did this cross a line from simply aggressively competing to something that was against the law? And all of these cases come down to two stories, one that the government tells about a company that has perniciously stepped over the line and one the companies tell about how in fact they’re providing benefits to consumers and competing fairly. And Apple already tells a very different story here. It says that what the Department of Justice presents as this evil moat around the iPhone, that bundle of practices, are, in fact, one of the company’s greatest strengths.

OK, so, David, you just said that Apple is arguing that its defenses, this moat that they’ve built that the government is arguing is unfair and illegal, is actually one of its greatest strengths. So tell me about that. What is Apple saying exactly?

Apple is saying that these steps that it’s taken that the Department of Justice is painting as illegal are, in fact, designed to create an experience that consumers love and that keeps them safe. A major argument for Apple is that a lot of these practices are good for security. And you’ve probably noticed that Apple has marketed itself as a more private option, a more secure option. They run ads about the privacy of the iPhone. They’ve gotten into a big fight with the government over encryption in the San Bernardino shooting several years ago.

I remember this. The FBI actually got the guy’s phone, the phone of this mass shooter, but then couldn’t get into it because the encryption software was so strong on the iPhone.

Exactly. And Apple is saying that that commitment to security lives in a lot of these practices that the government is targeting. A great example is the wallet. So the way they exclude other companies from making digital wallets is they don’t let them access the physical chip that interacts with the technology at the coffee shop to make the payment. And Apple says they don’t do that because they want to create the safest and most secure experience for users when they go to pay for their coffee with their sensitive banking information.

But more broadly, the argument that Apple is making here is that all of these practices to control the system around the iPhone, to control the experience for users on the iPhone, it’s about creating a magical experience for iPhone users where everything works together. And Apple is saying that users love the end result. They love this experience and that Apple is going to defend that experience from government intervention.

So Apple is basically saying, look, they’re not trapped. They can leave any time they want. They want to be here.

That’s right. And they want to be there because they love their Apple products.

They want an iPhone.

Right, exactly.

So what about the top line argument the DOJ is making that Apple actually has an illegal monopoly on smartphones, that Apple has cornered the market?

So Apple says that’s just not true. So you may remember, the Department of Justice is arguing that Apple has by revenue in the United States more than 65 percent share of the total smartphone market. Apple says, no, no, no, the way to understand this is it’s a global market.

Because outside the United States, iPhones are far less popular, Androids are more popular. And so Apple is saying, if you count the whole world, we have about a 20 percent share of the smartphone market. We don’t have a monopoly at all.

Oh, interesting. So Apple is saying, look, you’ve got the wrong universe. The universe, not the United States, the universe is the world. That’s where we’re competing.

Right, that’s exactly what they’re saying.

So David, how do we think this is actually going to go for Apple? It’s been in court on some of these issues before. So what do those cases tell us?

What they tell us is that Apple fights back hard. And when it does make changes, they’re largely around the margins of the business. They’ve not radically changed their business in response to government pressure or pressure from court cases. So there’s a couple examples of this.

One really contentious point over the last several years has been that the only way for a developer to get their app onto the iPhone is to sell in Apple Store. And if you sell in Apple Store, once you offer some in-app purchase, imagine a subscription or some other digital good that you buy in the app, you have to use Apple’s payment system, which takes a commission as high as 30 percent.

Now, Apple has a new high-profile lawsuit on its hands.

The game developer Epic Games has filed a lawsuit against Apple.

And so Epic Games —

Epic Games, they make Fortnite. And Fortnite is hyper popular —

— which makes the very popular game Fortnite, sued Apple. And they alleged that this whole system was anti-competitive.

Now, the legal complaint seeks to establish Apple’s App Store as a monopoly.

Apple says, you can’t go around our system and buy directly from Epic Games, from Fortnite. You have to buy through us.

They were trying to basically bypass the payment system, not pay that potentially as high as 30 percent commission.

Well, Apple stock tumbled a little over 3 percent today after a judge’s ruling in the company’s court battle with Fortnite.

And the judge in the case did require Apple to ease some of its restrictions on app developers.

Under the ruling, app developers will now be allowed to send users to other payment systems.

But it wasn’t all bad for Apple.

But the judge didn’t make them abandon their business model entirely.

The judge also sided with the tech giant on every other key point in the case.

So that’s kind of a win for Apple although slightly mixed one.

Apple did make changes, but they didn’t have to abandon the golden goose entirely. Another example is in Europe where —

The company faces fresh charges from the European Commission over its App Store practices.

The European Commission fined Apple 1.8 billion euros in early March for allegedly thwarting competition among its music streaming rivals. And this was driven by complaints from companies like Spotify, which say that Apple exerts an unfair amount of control over the relationship that they have with their consumers.

The competition commissioner said the company had, for a decade, abused its dominant position in music streaming apps.

But it’s an example of Apple fighting back. They say they’re going to appeal this fine and it’s expected that process will go on for some time.

So this is again rivals alleging that Apple is abusing its privileges and bigness with the App Store. And this is being investigated by the European Union.

Exactly. The pattern has been relatively clear over and over again. Software developers have accused Apple of taking onerous fees and applying unfair policies to their businesses.

Apple has fought back. When Apple has lost those fights, they’ve agreed to make minor concessions. But often they have continued to push back and continued to fight.

Now, all of this, of course, is the App Store we’ve been talking about, that’s not the DOJ case. the DOJ case is much bigger.

That’s right. So effectively, the aggressive control that Apple exerts over app developers that Spotify and Epic Games have been arguing about, the government is saying that Apple uses that control in all kinds of different ways to build this moat that protects the thing it really cares about, the iPhone. And it’s probably worth noting here that Apple says that they are changing some of the practices that are laid out in this lawsuit, that they’re going to make it easier for messaging apps on different phones to talk to each other and become more permissive for gaming apps. But it’s unclear how those changes might impact the case.

David, how much of an uphill battle does the DOJ face here? I’m thinking back to the case we talked about against Google and it did seem like quite a climb for the DOJ to actually prove its case against this tech giant.

Proving these cases is difficult. And you’re dealing with a company with almost limitless legal resources. They’re going to fight back hard.

And it will take a long time. These cases usually drag on before trial for multiple years. Apple is expected to file a motion to dismiss the DOJ lawsuit.

So that will provide an early sense of how strong the case is. But the truth is the current leadership of the Justice Department may not be in place when this case finally goes to trial. So they filed something that may well outlive them.

And how does that political change affect the case? Presumably they’ll continue it.

Well, a new administration could do what they wanted to with the case. This investigation started under a Republican president so it’s possible a new administration would keep things going. But they could also settle with Apple or withdraw the case. All those things remain options as they go to trial.

Got it. And what is the DOJ’s dream scenario here? What does it want to have happen with Apple?

So the Justice Department has asked, first and foremost, for the court to stop them from doing the things described in the lawsuit, stop them from excluding certain types of apps, or making certain products less compatible with the iPhone than Apple’s own products. But the devil will really be in the details of the judge’s ruling. If the judge rules that Apple broke the law in a lot of different ways, that may influence how the Department of Justice ultimately asks the judge to fix matters in this case.

So they could ask for changes to Apple’s behavior. They could ask for changes to the structure of Apple. But they really are holding their cards fairly close to the vest while they wait to see how a court rules on the substance of the allegations.

So David, I just want to step back here for a second and really think about what the government is doing here. It’s taking one of the single-most valuable companies in the world and is trying to fundamentally change the way that company operates. That strikes me as a potentially risky thing to do. It could be very damaging to this valuable American company, and as a result to the US economy.

Well, the government says that it’s worth it. That enforcing the competition laws in this country is good for the economy. And they’ve really leaned on the Justice Department’s long litigation with Microsoft at the turn of this century.

Basically, they’ve been arguing that Microsoft would force to allow things like Apple’s own iTunes product onto Windows. And as a result, it opened the door for Apple to build this whole ecosystem that resulted in the iPhone. So what the government believes is that, yes, they are accusing a major company of wrongdoing, but that in doing so, they will open the door to innovations that we can’t even conceive of.

So there would be a net benefit for both American society and for the economy.

But David there’s an interesting tension here. Of course, the government is arguing that all of these things are in service of a better, brighter future in the American economy, but a lot of people would say they choose Apple products because they like them better. They like Apple’s ecosystem.

They like being in the castle. So I guess there’s a real contrast there with what the government’s trying to do. Because, fundamentally, at the end of the day, this company is quite popular with consumers.

Well, and the government presents itself, first and foremost, as a law enforcement agency. That here is a company that, regardless of how popular its products are, has broken the law and needs to be held to account. But this is a really fascinating moment for reasons that go beyond any one case. Think about what’s happening here. The government has filed lawsuits against the biggest defining American tech companies of our era and it’s promising that this will lead to an era of new innovation, of better choices for consumers, even lower prices. And now we’re going to see whether or not they were right. And consumers will see it in the way that these products change in the way that this industry, which defines so many aspects of American life, operates going forward.

On Monday, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, breaking a five-month impasse in which the United States vetoed multiple calls for a halt to the fighting. The US abstained from the vote, allowing the resolution to pass.

The result of the voting is as follows — 14 votes in favor, 0 votes against, 1 abstention.

The draft resolution has been adopted as resolution 2728, 2024.

The US faced immediate criticism from Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who canceled meetings in Washington between an Israeli delegation and US officials, a public rebuke to President Biden who had asked for the meetings. And President Vladimir Putin of Russia acknowledged for the first time that the bloody assault on a concert hall near Moscow was executed by, quote, “radical Islamists.” However, he continued to assert that Ukraine probably played a role. Putin said that the tragedy was likely ordered by Ukraine, asserting that the assailants were on their way there after their attack and saying, quote, “The question is, who benefited from it?”

Finally, Donald Trump is all but certain to become the first former US President to stand trial on criminal charges after a judge on Monday denied his effort to delay the proceedings. The trial, in which Trump will be accused of orchestrating the cover up of a sex scandal surrounding his 2016 presidential campaign, will begin on April 15.
