  • Trivia The "central communications center" (teleprinter room), which appears several times in this movie, is a highly accurate depiction. Nearly thirty historically correct original teleprinter machines of various types were used. Some were provided by collector and technical consultant Henning Treumann , and some borrowed from other sources. All of the machines were fully operational, and, in the movie, are all printing authentic archival messages from the Nazi era, fed from off-screen teletype machines and notebook computers.
  • Goofs On the day of the attempt at Rastenburg, Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg managed to get through Security Zone II with his briefcase containing the explosives without problems. He knew however that on entering the inner Security Zone I, all personnel except Adolf Hitler 's inner circle were thoroughly searched, as a precaution against assassination attempts. In order to avoid it, von Stauffenberg arranged so that he entered the Zone with Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel - an officer in Keitel's company would not be searched.

"Valkyrie" is a meticulous thriller based on a large-scale conspiracy within the German army to assassinate Hitler, leading to a failed bombing attempt on July 20, 1944. At the center of the plot was Col. Claus von Stauffenberg, played here by Tom Cruise as the moving force behind the attempted coup, which led to 700 arrests and 200 executions, including von Stauffenberg's. Because we know Hitler survived, the suspense is centered in the minds of the participants, who call up the Reserve Army and actually arrest SS officials before discovering that their bomb did not kill its target.

Considering they were planning high treason with the risk of certain death, the conspirators seem remarkably willing to speak almost openly of their contempt for Hitler. That may be because they were mostly career officers in the army's traditional hierarchy and hated Hitler as much for what he was doing to the army as for what he was doing to the country. Realizing after the invasion of Normandy that the war was certainly lost, they hoped to spare hundreds of thousands of military and civilian lives.

Von Stauffenberg was known to be "offended" by the Nazi treatment of Jews in the 1930s and considered the Kristallnacht a disgrace to Germany, which possibly disturbed him as much as the fate of its victims. In any event, little is said among the conspirators about the genocide then underway -- although, being alienated from the SS, perhaps they didn't know what was happening. Perhaps.

They repeatedly tell each other that even should they fail, at least the world would know that not all Germans supported Hitler. And so it does. And whatever their deepest motives, they gave their lives in trying to kill the monster. The film, directed by Bryan Singer (" The Usual Suspects "), works heroically to introduce us to the major figures in the plot, to tell them apart, to explain their roles and to suggest their differences. The two best supporting performances are by Kenneth Branagh , as a major-general who smuggles a bomb into Hitler's inner circle and then must smuggle it out again, and Tom Wilkinson , as a general who artfully plays both sides of the fence, treating the plot with benign neutrality while covering himself should it fail.

Tom Cruise is perfectly satisfactory, if not electrifying, in the leading role. I'm at a loss to explain the blizzard of negative advance buzz fired at him for the effrontery of playing a half-blind, one-armed Nazi hero. Two factors may be to blame: (a) Cruise has attracted so much publicity by some of his own behavior (using Oprah's couch as a trampoline) that anything he does sincerely seems fair game for mockery, and (b) movie publicity is now driven by gossip, scandal and the eagerness of fanboys and girls to attract attention by posing as critics of movies they've almost certainly not seen. Now that the movie is here, the buzz is irrelevant, but may do residual damage.

If I say that Cruise is not electrifying, I must add that with this character, in this story, he cannot and should not be. This is a film about veterans of officer rank, with all the reserve and probity that officers gather on the way up. They do not scream or hurry and do not care to be seen that way. They have learned not to panic under fire, and they have never been more under fire than now.

A key element of their plot is to use Hitler's "Valkyrie" plan against him. The reserves were held back to defend Berlin and Hitler in case of an Allied assault, so von Stauffenberg conceived the strategy of killing Hitler, ordering up the reserves to ensure stability and making its first order of business the immobilization of the SS. We see that the plan might well have worked. Indeed, it did -- until the news arrived that Hitler was still alive. So much did the Fuhrer command the fanatical loyalty of troops and civilians with an almost mystical grip, that merely his voice on the radio could defeat the plot, even with Germany clearly facing ruin.

The July 20 plot is an intriguing footnote to history, one of those "what if" scenarios. If it had succeeded, one of the hopes of the conspirators was said to be an alliance with the Allies against Russia. Given the political realities of the time, when Russia was seen as our ally, that would have been insane, but it shows the plotters continuing to dream of a reborn professional German army with roles for them. The question of the liberation of the death camps is a good one. Even the Allies did not bomb the rail lines leading to them. There were so very, very many people who did not know.

Description by Wikipedia

Valkyrie is a 2008 American-German historical thriller film set in Nazi Germany during World War II. The film depicts the 20 July plot in 1944 by German army officers to assassinate Adolf Hitler and to use the Operation Valkyrie national emergency plan to take control of the country. Valkyrie was directed by Bryan Singer for the American studio United Artists, and the film stars Tom Cruise as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, one of the key plotters. The cast included Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Eddie Izzard, Terence Stamp and Tom Wilkinson.

Cruise's casting caused controversy among German politicians and members of the von Stauffenberg family due to the actor's practice of Scientology, which is viewed with suspicion in Germany. Because of this, the filmmakers initially had difficulty setting up filming locations in Germany, but they were later given access to film in locations, including Berlin's historic Bendlerblock. German newspapers and filmmakers supported the film and its attempt to spread global awareness of von Stauffenberg's plot.

The film changed release dates several times, from as early as June 27, 2008, to as late as February 14, 2009. The changing calendar and poor response to United Artists' initial marketing campaign drew criticism about the studio's viability. After a positive test screening, Valkyrie's release in North America was ultimately changed to December 25, 2008. United Artists renewed its marketing campaign to reduce its focus on Cruise and to highlight Singer's credentials. The film received mixed reviews in the United States and in Germany, where it opened commercially on January 22, 2009.

Movie Review: Valkyrie

The year is 1943 and Valkyrie , the second release under the revamped United Artists brand , opens with German officer Claus von Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise) on assignment in Africa. He had been sent there because his opposition to Hitler and the Nazi regime had become dangerously explicit and bellicose. His promotion to lieutenant-colonel of the general staff and transfer from the European lines to Africa is intended to give him some protection from pro-Nazi officers who might make trouble for him.

An attack on a transport column in Africa leaves Stauffenberg badly wounded. He loses his left eye, the fourth and fifth fingers of his left hand, and his right hand above the wrist. Given director Bryan Singer’s resume (which includes X-Men ) and the opening sequence, initial concerns that the film might be turned into an action movie are quickly dispelled. Given that the end of the movie is never in doubt, the movie never quite becomes a suspense thriller either. Yet Valkyrie still manages to deliver a thought-provoking and moving story of loyalty, betrayal, sacrifice, and doubt.

Following his recovery, Stauffenberg becomes more deeply and directly involved in a plot to assassinate Hitler. The resistance circle is far-ranging, and involves Major-General Henning von Tresckow (Kenneth Branagh), whose failed attempt to blow up Hitler’s plane is portrayed with dramatic effect. When the bomb hidden with bottles of cognac fails to explode, the package needs to be recovered before the bomb explodes or is delivered and discovered.

Tresckow serves to introduce Stauffenberg to the resistance circle, which is led by Ludwig Beck (Terence Stamp) and Dr. Carl Goerdeler (Kevin McNally). Beck had resigned as Chief of Army General Staff in 1938, and Goerderler had resigned as mayor of Leipzig in 1937. After their respective resignations these two men became focal points for various strands of resistance that reached throughout German political, military, religious, and social classes. Stauffenberg’s own religious convictions are given some light but respectful treatment. Stauffenberg’s Roman Catholic faith has been noted by many to be a significant contributing factor to his ability to resist the allure of Nazi ideology.

The film does a serviceable job making sense of the chaos that surrounded the various attempts, non-attempts, and abortive failures that led up to the final try to assassinate Hitler on 20 July 1944. The title of the film is taken from the name of the operation that was in place to quell any social uprising that might upset the stability of the Reich government. Operation Valkyrie was intended to mobilize the reserve army in the event of unrest or other civil emergency. The conspirators brilliantly manage to alter the details of the operation so that after Hitler’s assassination the military coup might have a real chance of effective execution.

Once Tresckow’s attempt fails and Stauffenberg actively joins the resistance circle, Stauffenberg and his activities become almost the exclusive focus of the film. The difficulty with this approach is that it tends simultaneously to flatten out Stauffenberg’s character, glossing over the important development in his own thinking and commitment to active resistance, as well as to minimize the importance of other players in the conspiracy.

It is never explained, for example, who Ludwig Beck is, or how significant it is that a man of his stature is involved in the conspiracy (Beck was to be the head of state in the new government, and Goerdeler was to be the new chancellor). We are left to draw our own conclusions about Beck’s importance and status when he makes calls on behalf of the replacement government and addresses important figures by their first names.

Similarly Col. Hans Oster , who had been forced to resign in 1943, is mentioned only in passing as Stauffenberg’s predecessor in the plot. Oster was an important connection to the enigmatic Admiral Wilhelm Canaris and the so-called Abwehr conspiracy, which included Dietrich Bonhoeffer (all three men were executed after the failure of Stauffenberg’s attempt on 8 April 1945).

This focus on Stauffenberg restricts attention to the size, scope, duration, and stature of the conspiracy. There are a few scenes where groups of people are present, but we never get a clear appreciation of the extent to which the success of the operation depended on a network of conspirators across the continent of Europe. Phone calls are made, but we never see or hear from those on the other side. This ultimately wastes the possibility of noteworthy performances from anyone other than Cruise. While this kind of movie simply cannot be expected to deliver a comprehensive overview of the entire ring of conspirators or the dozen or so attempts by Germans to kill Hitler, Valkryie does miss the opportunity to expand the focus in a meaningful way beyond Stauffenberg.

The portrayals of General Friedrich Olbricht (Bill Nighy), General Friedrich Fromm (Tom Wilkinson), and Colonel Mertz von Quirnheim (Christian Berkel) are only partial exceptions (Eddie Izzard does a respectable job with what he was given in his role as General Erich Fellgiebel ). Olbricht’s indecision, Fromm’s equivocation, and Quirnheim’s steadfastness will stay with the audience long after the movie is over.

The opposition of Canaris and Oster (and many others) to Hitler date from the mid- to late-1930s. Stauffenberg was a relatively late-comer to the conspiracy, even though his distaste for the Nazis was long-standing. Stauffenberg’s tardiness in coming to the active resistance was certainly off-set by his enthusiasm and courage in execution of the plot. But an opportunity for character development focused on the struggle to realize that active resistance was necessary is lost by the portrayal of Stauffenberg as the unquestioned foundation for resistance from the opening scenes of the movie. It was only after he sustained his injuries in Africa that Stauffenberg’s commitment to assassinate Hitler was truly and fully confirmed. And it was only after he was assigned to be Chief of Staff for Fromm that Stauffenberg himself (and through him the conspiracy) was given direct access to Hitler.

All of this places huge pressure on Cruise to deliver a performance worthy of Stauffenberg, and despite the various internal and external obstacles to the film’s success, Cruise delivers acceptably well. He never quite casts the aristocratic bearing that everyone attributes to the real-life Stauffenberg. But in treating a story as complicated and difficult as the 20 July 1944 plot to assassinate Hitler within the confines of a major motion picture release, certain limitations have to be accepted. This movie cannot be all things to all people.

This judgment is made in light of expectations that have been lowered because of the widespread criticisms of Valkyrie that have been leveled since the inception of the project. If the film is approached with such chastened expectations then it delivers a fair depiction of the Stauffenberg plot. Rotten Tomatoes currently rates Valkyrie at a 59%, which is still in the “rotten” range, but which is higher than other films released in the same week (including The Spirit , Marley & Me , and Bedtime Stories ).

For an increasing number of recent generations, the events of World War II seem like ancient rather than recent history. If Valkyrie encourages people to learn more about figures like Stauffenberg, Beck, Tresckow, Canaris, Bonhoeffer, and others, then it will have served its purpose.

Nota bene : I have authored an article, “Hitler Assassination Plot of July 20, 1944,” for the forthcoming International Encyclopedia of Revolution and Protest: 1500 to the Present (Wiley-Blackwell: March 2009).

The German Cross in gold is not on the list, despite clear evidence that it was indeed awarded to Stauffenberg. Colin

Factual error : Approximately three quarters of the way in to the film, there is a close up of a German soldier handing an officer a file of documents. The helmet that the soldier is wearing is a post war 1960s version. This can be determined by the lack of an air vent and rivet on the side of the helmet.

Col. Claus von Stauffenberg: I am involved in high treason with all means available to me. Can I count you in? Werner von Haeften: For anything, sir. Anything at all. Col. Claus von Stauffenberg: "Anything" is a *very* dangerous word, Lieutenant.

Trivia : One of von Tresckow's aides is played by Philipp von Schulthess, the grandson of Claus von Stauffenberg. In the film, Stauffenberg's wife is pregnant with Philipp's mother.

Question : Why did Fromm unplug his telephone while admonishing Olbricht and Stauffenberg?

Answer: Probably to prevent any interruptions.
