Step 1: Collection of Scrap Paper

Step 2: Processing of Scrap Paper

After segregation of the paper is done, it will be further cut into small pieces either by manual cutting process or fed into paper shredder that finally turns the paper materials into small pieces which makes it easy for pulping process.

Step 3: Turning the Scrap paper into Pulp

The scrap papers are then fed into a machine called “Hydrapulper” or “Hydropulper” it is a high powerful agitating machine that breaks down the fibers under hot temperatures. Usually, in this step, the scrap papers are fed into a Hydropulper machine and then chemicals such as Rosin and Alum are added to improve the bonding capacity of paper

Bleaching of Pulp – is used to improve the color of the pulp; basically, it improves the brightness of the paper pulp. Chemicals like Hydrogen peroxide and Sodium dithionite are commonly used, bleaching agents.

Although, Bleaching agents were used in the paper recycling process for several years. Recent studies show that they pose environmental concerns. Hence you can see several notebook manufacturers were adapting for bleach free processing

Sizing Agents – Rosin and Alum are commonly used sizing agents; the sizing agents help water absorbency of the paper and also reduce ink bleed. They are also used to improve the writing performance and printability of the paper

Step 4: Making Paper Sheets from Pulp

Once the pulp is extracted it is then transferred to “Uni-Vat” it is a manually operated equipment that helps to turn the pulp into sheets. Uni-vat has a tank-like structure where it is filled with water and has a metal mesh connected to lifting rods. Once the pulp is equally spread across the metal mesh it is lifted slowly to a certain height where the water is filtered, and the pulp extract is equally spread across the sheet.

Later, the pulp is transferred to a Screw Press which applies high amount of pressure on the pulp and removes excess water content and finally giving it a sheet like shape. These paper sheets are dried for a duration and were finally subjected to “ Calendaring ” process. In Calendaring process, the paper sheets were passed through series of rollers under high pressure that compress them giving a smooth texture to the paper.

In addition to having a Uni-vat machine; one can also install “ Paper Board Making Machine ” that is used to make paper folders, paper bags and thicksheets this is mostly available in automation grade where, the machine consists of series of rollers that turns the pulp into thick sheets which are suitable for making paper bags and folders

Step 5: Turning the Paper Sheets into End Products

In the final step the paper sheets were dried and then cut into required sizes by cutting machine. These sheets were later transformed into end products like post cards, paper bags, paper file folders, phonebooks etc.,. With the use of printing machine you can even print your company name and details on these products.

Profitable Aspects of Paper Recycling Business

The paper recycling business provides a decent profit margin as a small scale business. The availability of cheap raw material and the low cost machinery adds value to this business. The green movement is on. People are becoming more and more aware of the need to protect the environment and conserve our natural resources. A few months ago, I wrote an article on how to start a recycling business. Due to popular demand, I have decided to follow up with this article on how to start a paper recycling business.

Nowadays with rapid technological development, businesses are becoming more and more environmentally conscious and are increasingly looking for ways to reduce their environmental impact, and where possible, to reduce operating costs as well.

1. Market Behavior Analysis:

Market research is the first and most important task you need to undertake in order for you to know if your idea is viable. Before even considering the option of establishing a paper recycling plant, you need to ask yourself the following questions:

  • How is my business going to benefit my customers?
  • Who and how many potential customers are there for me?
  • What is unique about my business that might motivate buyers to patronize me?

You need to know if businesses in your location are willing to buy your products. Recycled paper can be used to make newspapers, paper money, egg cartons, adhesive tapes, cardboard boxes, tissue paper and paper grocery bags.

Most companies pride themselves on using recycled paper. You can check online and find companies in your location that manufacture all of these products and approach the manager to ask if you can supply paper for them.

Setting up a paper recycling company is not as expensive as you might think it would be. Most companies start with what they have on hand and grow slowly and steadily. The amount you spend depends on how big your operation would be.

For your business to survive, grow and get a steady stream of cash flow, you must be aware of what is happening in your industry as well as what your competitors are doing. What associations do you need to join and how can you tap into these resources?

To be successful in the recycling business, you must have a thorough understanding of the market for recyclable materials in order to adapt quickly to changing market conditions. Talk to people who are already in the business. They will have up to date, practical information and suggestions. Talk to people you already know and also check with the community recycling center. They would have contacts for you to go forward.

Don't Make These Mistakes When Recycling Paper and Cardboard

There are some cases where you shouldn't toss your boxes straight into a recycling bin. We'll explain.

You can clear out some clutter by recycling all the empty cardboard boxes in your home.

Are you recycling your cardboard boxes? If you're like me, you always have a ton of boxes from receiving weekly  meal kits  or having lazy pizza nights. You might toss them into a recycling bin and never think about them again. But not all boxes and paper can be recycled.

Here's an example: the pizza boxes you've been "recycling" are actually getting thrown away by employees at the recycling center (more below). The same goes for the glossy wrapping paper you thought would be fine to put into the paper recycling. 

According to the St. Charles County recycling center , 1 billion trees' worth of paper is thrown in the trash annually, in the US alone. I spoke with some recycling experts and here's what I found about the right way to recycle paper and cardboard.

How to recycle cardboard

There's a right way to recycle your paper and cardboard. For example, you can recycle an Amazon box, but not a greasy pizza box. This is because the oils from the pizza saturate the cardboard, making it unrecyclable. It's not completely impossible to recycle contaminated boxes. A recycling center employee told CNET to cut out the part of the cardboard that has residue on it. You can place the soiled part in your compost bin.

Before you bring the cardboard to your nearest recycling center or put it in a bin for pickup, break the boxes down so that they're lying flat. This helps make more room in the bin and helps the recycling team to easily put the cardboard into their processing machines. Also, remove all contents from the inside, like bubble wrap.

Also, if you're placing cardboard into a recycling bin without a lid, make sure it's covered in case it rains. Wet cardboard can clog up the machines, causing an entire batch of cardboard to become contaminated.

If possible, remove the tape from the boxes before taking the cardboard to the recycling center, as well. Saving the employees a step can help make the recycling process more efficient.

The Environmental Protection Agency suggests checking with your local recycling provider for the proper way to recycle cardboard to ensure you're following their standards.

How to recycle paper

Just like cardboard, there are certain types of paper you shouldn't recycle. For example, the paper towel you used to wipe up spilled milk or gift wrap with a glossy finish. The EPA recommends looking for paper that has already been recycled when you go shopping so you know that the paper can be recycled again. 

When it comes time to recycle the paper you've used, avoid getting it wet as it reduces the value in the recycling market. Instead, keep it separate from other recyclables, like anything that could leak liquid. Also, wait until the morning of pickup to take the paper out to the curb if your bin doesn't have a lid to prevent it from becoming wet due to rain.

Also, many recycling companies won't accept shredded paper because it can get stuck in the machinery, so avoid shredding your paper. Instead, if there are confidential documents you want to recycle, like bank statements, use a marker to mark out important information.

What else can I do?

Recycling is one way to help reduce waste, but there are other ways to prevent it in the first place.

  • Limit your use of paper.
  • Reuse cardboard boxes or donate them to someone who will use them -- for example, someone who's moving.
  • See if the companies sending you boxes will take them back for reuse.
  • Reuse gift bags and tissue paper, and consider using paper gift wrap.

Singapore recycling firm Tay Paper set to close

Singapore paper recycling firm Tay Paper Recycling is set to close after 34 years in business.

The company was originally an informal scrap dealer in the late 1980s and had grown into one of Singapore’s biggest paper recyclers. It collects, sorts, pulps and bails waste office paper, newspapers, and corrugated cardboard for export to paper mills to make new recycled products. 

Tay Paper Recycling is currently under judicial management, which is when a third party is appointed to restructure a struggling company’s debt. On a visit to the company’s premises on Friday, Eco-Business found large volumes of paper awaiting processing but no activity. The company employs around 20 staff.

Tay Paper has made headlines in recent years for recycling millions of red packets sold during Chinese New Year in partnership with Singapore banks DBS and OCBC.

Though the company, known for its high-quality, well-sorted paper, had cornered a large share of Singapore’s used paper market, it ran into financial difficulties earlier this year, according to sources familiar with the company. Staff at the plant confirmed that the company is under judicial management.

Its website has been suspended and reviews on Google point to disgruntled employees who left with unpaid CPF, a mandatory savings scheme for Singaporeans citizens and permanent residents.

Much of the cost of running the firm goes into procuring used paper – Singapore has no producer responsibility law that requires producers to pay for the paper they use to be collected. Manually sorting used paper is another costly part of the business, an executive explained in a past interview .

Tay Paper Recycling was previously owned by Sembcorp, but the industrial conglomerate divested its stake in the company for S$6 million (US$4.4 million) in 2018.

Paper has a relatively high recycling rate in Singapore – 37 per cent – compared to just 6 per cent for plastics. But the paper recycling rate has dropped in recent years, down from 44 per cent in 2019.

In addition, we will also offer special discounted rates to all our customers at regular intervals.

We are aware that there are some one – off jobs or government contracts that are always lucrative, we will ensure that we abide by the pricing model that is expected from contractors or organizations that bid for such contracts.

They are the sole financial of the business which is why they decided to restrict the sourcing of the start – up capital for the business to just three major sources.

These are the areas we intend generating our start – up capital;

  • Generate part of the start – up capital from personal savings and sale of his stocks
  • Generate part of the start – up capital from friends and other extended family members
  • Generate a larger chunk of the startup capital from the bank (loan facility).

N.B: We have been able to generate about $100,000 ( Personal savings $70,000 and soft loan from family members $30,000 ) and we are at the final stages of obtaining a loan facility of $350,000 from our bank. All the papers and document has been duly signed and submitted, the loan has been approved and any moment from now our account will be credited.

Scaling back Labour’s workers’ rights plan would be disastrous, warns TUC president

Reports say Sir Keir Starmer may risk union support and bow to pressure from business to amend new deal

Watering down Labour’s plan to strengthen workers’ rights would be disastrous for the party’s relations with the unions and could cost votes at the general election, the president of the Trades Union Congress has warned.

Amid reports that Sir Keir Starmer may bow to pressure from business and amend important parts of his “ new deal for workers ”, Matt Wrack said the Labour leader risked causing “significant anger” among union members.

Wrack, the general secretary of the 34,000-strong Fire Brigades Union, said: “The debate on workers’ rights is a key issue for all unions as we approach a general election. As a policy, it is very popular with our members but it is popular with the voters as well.

“We know Labour will come under pressure from business interests but there should be no backtracking and no weakening. Labour needs to deliver this as one of its top priorities. If there is a rolling back there will be significant anger.”

The proposed new deal for workers includes curbs on the use of zero-hours contracts , the extension of collective bargaining, and protection against unfair dismissal from day one of employment.

Wrack made it clear that unions were watching closely to see whether intensive lobbying from business had paid off after it emerged last week that Labour’s plans do not involve a complete ban on zero-hours contracts and that the extension of sectoral collective bargaining will initially be confined to social care.

“We have picked up the press talk about possible rolling back. The message we have had back from the leader’s office is that there is nothing to it,” Wrack said.

“I don’t want to get in a slanging match with Keir Starmer until I see what he is proposing,” Wrack added, “but it would be inept in our view to backtrack on a very popular policy that will win votes and appeal to working-class voters who would traditionally be expected to vote Labour but who have drifted off.

“It is a policy that is necessary in terms of maintaining unity in the Labour party. The leadership shouldn’t just rely on the idea that Labour is the only game in town. People need to have something to vote for other than Keir Starmer who is not Rishi Sunak.”

Wrack said Labour also needed to deliver on its pledge to repeal the 2016 Trade Union Act, which placed curbs on how unions could take industrial action, and minimum service levels, under which unions are forced to maintain public services during strikes.

“I would struggle to see how Keir Starmer could backtrack on these two commitments because he has been so clear about them, but I would never rule anything out with Labour politicians.”

Despite Labour’s strong showing in last week’s elections, Wrack said he detected little enthusiasm for the party because “people are not sure what the policy agenda is other than continuity”.

Wrack said many unions had their annual conferences coming up with the TUC holding its annual congress in September. “If the message is that Labour is rolling back on workers’ rights, then the leadership can expect a hostile reception.

“Rolling back on this would be pretty disastrous for relations with the unions.”

“It is the one thing unions have to sell to Labour voters. You look around and I am not sure what other reason there is to vote Labour.”

“If organised labour comes out strengthened from the early months of a Labour government that alters the political balance after 40 years of attacks on unions. The plans for workers’ rights don’t go far enough but they do start to alter the balance of power in the workplace.”

A Labour spokesperson said: “The new deal will be a core part of Labour’s offer and we will be campaigning on this ahead of the general election. “Labour’s new deal for working people was agreed at the party’s national policy forum last summer building upon our green paper. Our commitments to bring forward legislation to parliament within 100 days to deliver the new deal and to consult widely on implementation have not changed.”
