When you think back on your own education, there’s probably a teacher who stands out as an exceptional source of encouragement and inspiration. Maybe it was a college professor who inspired you to change your career field — or, maybe it was a kindergarten teacher whose simple acts of kindness made a positive difference in your childhood. But no matter what grade you were in or what subject you were studying, chances are your favorite teacher possessed many of the skills and characteristics that are featured on this list, which breaks down the qualities of a good teacher in detail.

Inspired Teaching and Learning with a Preliminary Teaching Credential

National University offers both Single Subject and Multiple Subject Teaching Credentials , along with a wide variety of additional teaching credentials to help you reach your goals. The credential you need depends on the classes or grade levels you intend to teach and in what state, along with other factors. For example, according to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), you’ll need a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential to become an elementary school teacher, whereas anyone who “want[s] to teach in high school in California must earn a Single Subject Teaching Credential.” Finally, “Individuals who want to teach special education students in California must earn an Education Specialist Instruction Credential,” per CTC guidelines.

According to the online education resource Teaching-Certificate , “Although the…California Commission on Teacher Credentialing used to require 150 hours of professional growth to renew a clear credential, clear credentials may now be renewed without verifying any professional or continuing education requirements.” However, that doesn’t mean educators should overlook opportunities for continued learning. While no longer a CTC requirement, continuing education has several benefits for teachers and school administrators, like increasing your marketability, providing you with professional networking opportunities, and creating a path to learn and practice new skills — while keeping your old ones up-to-date.

Before we look at these skills in closer detail, it’s important to point out that the CTC requirements above are specific to California, and that the continuing education or professional development requirements for educators may differ in your state. The 10 Most Important Qualities of a Good Teacher, According to Real Educators

This is what it takes to succeed in this challenging career.

It’s a standard teacher interview question : “What do you think is the most important quality of a good teacher?” While everyone has a different answer, there are some that come up more often than others. We asked a group of experienced educators and administrators to share their thoughts on the key qualities of a good teacher. Here’s what they had to say.

1. Patience

This was far and away the most commonly mentioned characteristic by educators in our survey. “Patience can be used in virtually every situation,” says high school ELA teacher Ann Cox. “If a teacher is able to remain calm, consider others’ point of view, and think through scenarios, they will be able to navigate just about anything that comes their way.”

She continues: “Patience helps teachers not to react in the moment when students are off task, disrespectful, etc. It’s also helpful when dealing with angry parents so you don’t say or do something you might regret later. And patience is definitely needed when sitting through meetings and professional development sessions!”

For ELA teacher Kenly CG, patience means “paying attention to each student’s needs and showing that you care about your students’ learning.” UK special school teacher Sarah Brown also advises “remaining calm, listening and observing students’ needs, repeating instructions, and modelling again when necessary.”

2. Empathy and Compassion

These two traits were a close second behind patience when we asked about the qualities of a good teacher. “They have to know you care before they can learn from you,” explains middle school teacher Samantha Wheeler. As a special ed teacher from New York notes: “You have to teach the child before you can teach the curriculum.”

“Empathy is a constant exercise in stepping outside of yourself and your perspective to see the children you teach for who they are,” notes Indiana preschool teacher Maile C. Quinton. “Contact talks. Get down on the same level as a child, listen to what they say, and emphasize their shared feelings by validating them. Don’t try to silver lining everything—you can validate a situation, a moment, an emotion without condoning a behavior or a problem. Empathy isn’t sympathy.”

3. Flexibility and Adaptability

Being open-minded to change is critical in this field. So many of the educators we surveyed agree with this North Carolina ESL teacher: “There is nothing constant in teaching. Good teachers have to be able to adapt to the changing needs of students, to new administrators, new curricula, new colleagues, and new technology.”

“With so many different needs from students and parents, teachers need to be flexible to accommodate and meet students where they are at,” says elementary school counselor Lisa K, while high school English teacher Nicole P. adds, “There are often times where you need to think on your feet, so being flexible is important to go with the flow in different situations.” ADVERTISEMENT

Elementary special ed teacher Brianna Vuori sums it up like this: “We can only begin to predict what the future will hold and with that what we need to prepare students for, so adaptability is critical to being able to survive and thrive in this ever-changing profession.”

Teaching can be a tough gig, and you’ll need to be dedicated and passionate in order to thrive. “Passion is what drives us forward and what sees us through rough times,” emphasizes ELS department head Katerina T. “It is the driving force behind every lesson plan or decision we make and what lies at the foundation of life-changing relationships with our students.”

“Teachers that have passion will always find a way to meet the demands of the job,” says Florida teacher Jamie Cabaniss. “Teachers can lean on their passions when feeling frustrated and burnt out. Passions are what reignite us to get back in the classroom to teach our hearts out.”

Preschool teacher Christina H. couldn’t agree more. “You have to have a love and passion for what you are doing,” she declares. “Teaching isn’t just ‘teaching.’ It is also being a second mom (or dad), a counselor, a referee, a nurse, and so much more. To wear these many hats, you need to love what you are doing. You also need to love your students to help them succeed. Loving them on their best and worst days is what will make you successful.”

5. Kindness

Over and over again, educators emphasized kindness as one of the most important qualities of a good teacher. “We are in the business of teaching human beings. We must teach them to be good people,” stresses Adam Peterson, Illinois music teacher and tutor.

Tina Jones agrees: “Teachers need to be kind, caring, compassionate and understanding. In our world today, with kids getting so much information and misinformation via social media, children need examples of those qualities more than ever.”

6. Collaboration

“Good teachers need to be able to give ideas, ask for help, share, and communicate with coworkers and families,” advises one Washington second grade teacher. “Be able to take suggestions, offer help, and not take things personally.”

Teachers regularly have to work collaboratively, and not just with their fellow colleagues and administrators. Developing strong, collaborative relationships with parents and families is vital. To succeed in this field, you need to learn to work well as part of a team.

7. Professionalism

It probably feels like professionalism should be a given in any job, but it’s one of the most important qualities of a good teacher because you need to gain and maintain the respect of students, families, and administration. “Some days are going to be frustrating, discouraging, and stressful,” warns an Ohio 7th grade science teacher, “but you need to remain professional by staying calm and encouraging and being a good mentor for your students.”

8. Sense of Humor

There’s no doubt about it, teachers do best when they have a sense of humor. “Laughing at yourself is a great relief, and laughing with children builds trust with them,” says Maile C. Quinton. Find ways to bring humor into your classroom, and you’ll find that students relax and learn a little more easily. (Plus, it’s much easier to deal with the small daily annoyances of teaching when you learn to laugh them off!)

9. Open-Mindedness

“Be open to learning from more (and even less) experienced teachers, and open to trying out new teaching and classroom management methods,” recommends middle school ELA teacher Abigail Perry.

“We are building relationships with a diverse student population,” notes Cheryl Rizzo, a middle school ELA teacher. “This can be a source of stress or create divide. However, with an open mind, it can create new opportunities or a chance to grow. Teachers are open-minded when they allow students to have a voice and take an active part in their education.”

Part of being open-minded means demonstrating a willingness to grow and a dedication to growth mindset. According to a literacy coach from North Carolina: “This job requires constant reflection, learning, and growth.”

10. Resilience

Marilyn Weber, a retired principal from Massachusetts, names this as the quality she looked for in a good teacher. “In order to navigate the world of education with all its related constituencies and responsibilities, an educator needs to be knowledgeable, flexible, an impeccable communicator, and should be able to withstand all the highs and lows of what comes their way and needs to be accomplished,” she states. She added that educators must be able to “do so without allowing any of that to shake their confidence and resolve in order to do what’s best for their students.”

That’s a tall order! Fortunately, Andrea Perry, a certified coach for educator well-being, has some advice. “Develop emotional intelligence. It’s critical for keeping our calm and being proactive, not reactive. This supports the teacher not only in serving their students well but also helps them remain joyfully in the profession as well.”

These qualities of a good teacher didn’t make the top 10, but they’re definitely worthwhile attributes for every educator to cultivate:

• Inclusive mindset: “There is such a huge stigma against disabilities and it is often hushed away, which creates shame. All children are general education first and receive special education services second. Build a classroom community with respect by explaining differences to students and celebrating everyone’s strengths. True inclusivity helps all students grow, not just the students in a special education classroom. True inclusivity should help you as a teacher grow.” —Katie M., Functional Life Skills Teacher
• Love for all children: “A good teacher must truly like kids, even the naughty ones. Too often teachers only seem to like the ‘good’ kids or the ones from ‘good’ families. They attribute the student’s behavior to something personal or bad about them. There’s no doubt about it: teaching is hard work. Some teachers are able to rise above it to deliver consistently great lessons, forging strong relationships with colleagues and pupils alike. Others struggle in their role and only seem to do the bare minimum. What makes a good teacher? While the answer may vary depending on one’s learning style, there are certain qualities of a good teacher which ring true.

Knowledge of subject matter

One of the first characteristics of a good teacher is a keen interest in their chosen subject matter and a passion for continuous learning -  we discuss this further here.  When a teacher has a love for his or her subject, it shines through. This helps inspire interest in students, who pick up this enthusiasm. Think about it: knowledgeable teachers also have a wider bank of subject material to turn to in order to tailor the lesson to their individual students. Good teachers not only work with their existing knowledge, but strive to stay on top of the latest research in their field. This helps them make the subject come alive for pupils.

Classroom Skills

Enthusiasm alone isn’t enough to make someone a good teacher. Good teachers also have the training necessary to deliver lessons in the most effective manner. They should know the ins and outs of classroom resources, know how to mark student work, be able to write up accurate reports, and know how to deal with disciplinary issues. An effective teacher tries to spark discussion, framing facts in such a way as to lead their students to look at the issue from all sides. This includes engaging the whole class, not just the most talkative pupils.

High expectations for students

A great teacher sets high expectations in the classrooms to help students reach their full potential. They set standards of mutual respect, so that pupils know that substandard work or behaviour will be noticed and responded to. Good teachers believe that every student has the ability to learn, and are willing to push them to do their best.

Excellent planning skills

Effective teaching involves a great deal of planning and organisation. Good teachers put in the effort to prepare their lessons thoroughly. Lesson planning helps manage student expectations, so that they know exactly what their obligations are. The grading policy should be clear, as should assignments and objectives. Part of what makes a good teacher is the ability to stay organised, maintaining accurate records and keeping track of individual student strengths and weaknesses. Clear expectations help keep the whole classroom stay on task. It’s useful to brush up on the  National Curriculum  every now and again.

Create a sense of community

It’s not all stuffy paperwork, rules, and task lists. Desirable qualities of a teacher also include the ability to form strong relationships with their students. Teachers are often warm, caring, and open individuals, who help students feel comfortable in the classroom. Students should feel safe to share their ideas in a supportive learning environment. What distinguishes mediocre teachers from good ones is the ability to create this sense of belonging.

There’s a great deal of communication involved with effective teaching. Part of what makes a good teacher stand out is the ability to get messages across in lessons. However, the best teachers also are able to spark connections with students on a personal level. They must be able to communicate regularly with parents, with conferences and written reports alike. If there are problems in the classroom, a good teacher will reach out to the parents by phone or email to discuss the issues. A good teacher has a collaborative spirit, working effectively with colleagues and taking on suggestion or criticism.

When you need to put together information for a presentation for students or other teachers, you can be surprisingly effective without having to do too much at all. Here are some tips for teachers making presentations for in the classroom.

1. Establish one clear idea.

Conventional wisdom of the past used to be about putting as much information and content into a presentation as possible. It was all about trying as hard as you could to come across as an authoritative figure who truly was a master of the subject. That barely works in higher ed, and certainly is pliable in K-12. Consider that you aren’t trying to teach someone everything you know in a short window, but rather making an impression for long-term retention. Focus on one idea with supporting information in a quick period of time.

2. Start with a compelling hook.

When you consider the average suggested presentation length is only around ten minutes, you don’t have any time to waste. Obviously the specifics of the presentation will vary depending upon the grade level, time of day, content being presented and so on. One thing that won’t vary is the need to grab students right off of the bat and have them paying attention from the first few seconds.

As Cision recommends , when the average attention spans have shrunk down to around eight seconds, you know that you need to jump right in with something captivating. Obviously your presentation needs to have a point and needs to be worthwhile as well, but if you can simply give them something that they actually want to see in the first place, you stand a much better shot of being successful in your presentation. It might not seem like a powerful point but it is true in any context.

You might even do it without noticing, but you still do it constantly. Do your ears ever perk up when someone talks about a certain subject? Or, do you hear someone start a conversation with words that bore you and immediately look for a way out? It’s the same thing when it comes to presenting. You only have a few seconds to get it right and hook your class.

3. Prioritize–only put in what’s important.

Another major item to remember is what you are putting into your presentation as far as content is concerned. If you already understand how important it is to captivate your classroom and capitalize on the short attention spans, it’s not a wise strategy to grind the presentation to a screeching halt just so that you can read boring statistics and bland figures. There does need to be some information, but you could read and reference figures without using presentation software in the first place.

By having presentation slides with tons of words, you are just wasting time and filling space that will turn off your viewers. As Mr. Media Training suggests , if you have too many words then you either don’t know your presentation well enough, or your presentation isn’t supported by any additional evidence. The good news is that the technology of companies such as LiveSlides allows you to insert video into PowerPoint so that you can truly bring any sort of evidence you want. Those sorts of slides make perfect sense because you can’t put video on a notecard. Plus, by stimulating your classr with an additional surprise and viewpoint, you aren’t risking students falling asleep because of a long, monotonous message.

4. Consider schema and background knowledge.

Familiar images, references, sounds, music, and other bits of information can act as anchors to ground student understanding, as well as disarming some of the intimidation or anxiety new content can represent for some students. Along with focusing on a single idea per presentation, this can go a long way towards making better presentations for students.

5. With slides, less is more.

Believe it or not, the most acceptable answer from professionals is that you don’t need a lot of slides in a presentation. As Six Minutes Speaking and Presentation Skills suggests , sometimes you don’t need any slides. However, if you are going to give a presentation to your class and you need to have supporting information then you can easily do that with a few slides. The short answer is you probably need fewer slides than you think.

If there’s too much information, students are instantly going to go from trying to listen to you into a mode where they simply skim the PowerPoint slide. Once they realize it is the same message, the PowerPoint slide is basically worthless. You obviously can put summarizing points, facts, and figures into your presentation. But with that being said, PowerPoint was created as a tool and you need to be comfortable with using it. By having the right type of information in it you can actually enhance the presentation and student retention.

A presentation itself isn’t that difficult of a thing to master. So many people are caught up with using PowerPoint that they forget what it is actually for. When you are going to give your next presentation to your class, you need to know your subject matter first and the essentials of PowerPoint and presentation design second. Once you’ve narrowed your content and honed your message, you can capitalize on it by adding in all of the bells, whistles, and other enhancements that will help students retain what they’ve learned.

8 Tips to Power-Up Your Classroom Presentations

Last month, I attended a Back to School Night for parents, sitting through presentation after presentation by teachers, some with slides that helped make their presentation a delight to listen to, and others . . . well, that's why I'm writing this blog post.

The goal of a classroom presentation is to aid you in effectively conveying information in a way that allows students (or their parents) to remember what you said. Unfortunately, for some, the presentation becomes a crutch, and they begin to rely on the slides to tell their story, rather than to help them tell the story.

I've been creating presentations using software like PowerPoint and KeyNote for 20 years, and I've learned a lot about how to most effectively communicate. Here's what I've found.

1. Use as Many Slides as You Need

It's a common myth that better presentations use fewer slides. This is simply not the case. I once sent an education conference presentation to the organizers so they could preview it in advance of my speaking. They wrote back, concerned that my 45-minute presentation had 116 slides. I looked it over and realized they were right! I revised it and sent a presentation with 135 slides back to them. I finished my talk with 5 minutes to spare -- just enough time to take questions -- and the presentation was a huge success.

The number of slides in your presentation is irrelevant. What matters is how well your slides communicate and how much time you spend talking about each slide. Spending five minutes on five slides will almost always be more engaging to your students than spending five minutes on a single slide, even when the information is exactly the same.

In the movie Amadeus , the Emperor of Austria complains to Mozart that his music has "too many notes." Mozart responds, "There are just as many notes as are required. Neither more nor less." Use as many slides as you need to make your point. No more. No less.

2. Minimize Verbosity

Your slides are there to support what you are saying, not to say it for you. Keep your word count low, and only place one main point on a slide, plus three to five sub-points if absolutely needed. Remember tip #1 above -- don't be afraid to use more slides. They're free! Also, the language in your slides doesn't need to be in complete sentences. Pare the text to as few words as possible, using what's there only to emphasize and reinforce -- not replace -- the words coming out of your mouth.

3. Maximize Visuals

Photos, figures and icons work as visual memory triggers. They help your students remember what it is you're saying. Any time you can add a visual that helps illustrate or reinforce the points you're making in your slides, you should use it. One great way to do this on the cheap is to use public domain or creative commons photos you can find on Flickr or Google .

4. Reduce Noise

Many teachers like to add banners, headers, footers, page numbers and more noise to their slides. Unless the information needs to be on every slide for a vital reason (which is rare), you should remove it. All these redundant elements do is create distractions from the content of your slides. I find this to be especially true of page numbers. Imagine if a movie included a time code at the bottom, constantly reminding you how long you had been watching. All this does is serve to take the viewer out of the moment. Page numbers in slides really don't provide any useful information -- they just remind your students how long they've been watching.

Pursuant to tips #1 and #2, you're not going to win awards by cramming the most content on the fewest slides. Make text and visuals as large as you can. Not only does this make them easier to see and read, but larger images and text make a greater impact to aid memory. There's nothing wrong with filling an entire slide with a photo, and then placing text right on top. You may have to use a transparent background immediately behind the text so that it's clearly readable, but the overall effect is almost always more memorable than just some text beside an image.

6. Highlight What You Are Talking About

While you are presenting, your students may be momentarily distracted taking notes, thinking about what you are saying, glancing out the window, possibly even daydreaming. When they refocus on your slides, though, they need to quickly pick back up where you are, or you risk losing them again.

• Use contrast or call-outs to clearly show the area of the slide you are talking about.
• Reveal bullet points or table rows one at a time so that the last one visible is the one you are talking about.
• Use arrows, circles or other pointers to show what you are referencing in specific parts of an illustration, photo or graph.
• Animate and reveal parts of illustrations and graphs (where possible) to build your story rather than showing everything at once.
• Use bold type or different colors to highlight the keywords in any lengthy text.

7. Transition Changes

Humans suffer from an affliction called change blindness -- we have a hard time seeing changes unless there is a clear transition between the states. This is especially a problem in presentations where slides may look very much alike. Most programs include transitions that can be used between slides or on elements in the slides themselves.

My favorite transition is the cross-dissolve -- where the first slide fades down while the next slide fades up -- but different transitions can help illustrate points in your presentation. Are you talking about combustion or the fire of London? Use a flame transition. Talking about photography or Hollywood movies? Use the flashbulb transition. Even "cheesy" transitions help overcome change blindness and aid student memory at the same time.

8. Repeat Yourself Redundantly

It’s OK to repeat the same slide more than once -- especially when using images -- if you are reminding students of an earlier point. Obviously, this is not a license to be monotonous. However, if you want to tie separate ideas together, emphasize a point or splash in a little comic relief, it's perfectly fine to repeat a slide.

Bonus Tip: Make it Funny!

There's little doubt that emotional responses can aid memory. While it can be difficult to apply this power in a classroom slide presentation, humor is easy enough, and adding a bit of levity to your presentations at the right points can work to give students vital memory hooks.

Remember, the point of presentation slides is not to replace you as the teacher, but to help your students understand and remember what you are teaching. Overwhelming them with too much information can be just as harmful as underwhelming them with too little.

Irish teacher jailed for third time over pronouns dispute: 'Disgrace on our country'

WESTMEATH, Ireland (TND) — Irish police arrested a teacher this week for reportedly violating a court order to stay away from a school where he refused to use a student's preferred pronouns.

An Garda Síochána, Ireland’s national police, took Enoch Burke into custody Monday outside Wilson’s Hospital School. The institution is where Burke declined to refer to a student with the “they” pronoun in 2022, according to The Irish Times .

A high court judge ordered Burke to stay off campus last year and sent him to prison, but he began visiting the school again after his release in June, according to the publication.

“I have a right to work here. I have a right to be here and not to tell students they need to [take] puberty blockers,” Burke said during his most recent arrest, according to footage shared by his social media account.

The teacher was reportedly booked for contempt after violating a court order by visiting the campus at the beginning of last school year. That arrest followed financial penalties Burke received for similar charges.

His first stint in prison for the issue took place in 2022 after he refused to follow the school’s direction to call the student by a name and pronoun the teacher didn’t agree with, according to The Irish Times.

Burke claimed during his recent arrest he was rejecting “transgenderism.”

I am not going to turn my back on my duty to my students,” he told one of the arresting officers. “You don’t have a duty to do what’s wrong and to bring me before the court.”

Burke also alleged that Wilson’s Hospital School was torturing and mutilating students while telling them they did not identify with a gender. The institution did not return The National Desk’s request for comment by the time this article was published.

Members of the teacher’s family stood by as officers arrested him, with his mother claiming that using preferred pronouns is the first step toward "abuse,” “terrible agony for young people” and “suicide.”

“My son is being handcuffed, being taken now, being handcuffed and being taken to Mountjoy Prison again. It’s a disgrace on our country,” Martina Burke said outside the school. “Shame on every teacher. Shame on every teacher who is abusing a child by teaching them such satanic, satanic wickedness behind these gates of these schools.”

The American Psychological Association has suggested that modeling gender-inclusive language and behavior while maintaining an open mind about gender identity can help students who are feeling negatively affected by their own.

Teacher who lived in a car puts spotlight on teachers' low pay

A teacher who launched a GoFundMe to help him afford a place to live has put a spotlight on teacher salaries as the new school year begins.

Bill Atkinson, a fourth grade teacher in Austin, Texas, said he began living in his car this summer when his previous living situation fell through and he could not afford rent on his $54,000 annual salary.

"No matter how much I borrowed or scraped, there was no catching up, because I just did not make enough to cover rent -- because I was so used to living paycheck to paycheck, I didn't have anything in savings to try to cover rent for a couple months," he told " Good Morning America ." "So I tried to get a place, [but I] was having a hard time finding a place I could afford on my own."

Atkinson, who is currently teaching at NYOS Charter School, said even after applying for places that he could afford, his application was denied due to bad credit.

Additionally, Atkinson said he currently owes $2,629.36 for the grant he received from University of North Texas for his undergraduate degree that he needs to repay. He said he is also working toward paying off other derogatory debts that are affecting his credit score including past medical bills and rent arrears. Additional expenses he is responsible for include his student loans and car loan, which he said are considered in good standing.

"Obviously paying rent and paying this debt, they're not coinciding," he explained. "Because I feel like, no matter how much I try, I'm still living paycheck to paycheck."

Atkinson said he is earning around $54,000 a year, and based on that income, he isn't eligible for housing assistance in Austin. To qualify for Section 8 housing, applicants are required to earn an annual gross income of 50% or less of the median income, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development .

The City of Austin Housing Department & Austin Housing Finance Corporation reported recently that as of June this year, the annual median income in Austin for a single household was $88,200, meaning 50% of that would come out to $44,100, which disqualifies Atkinson from applying for assistance.

Following a suggestion from his co-worker, Atkinson began documenting his journey on his TikTok account. Some friends and co-workers later recommended he launch a GoFundMe page.

Students raise money to help school security guard visit his family in Nigeria

To date, the amount accumulated from donations has surpassed $17,000, an amount that Atkinson described as beyond his expectations.

According to Atkinson, the funds raised from the page and the support he received from those who have learned about his story -- including one good Samaritan who eventually provided him with a temporary place to stay -- eventually helped him land a room through a rental agency.

He said he hopes to not just raise money but also to tell the story of struggling teachers through his GoFundMe.

"I'm telling my story because I'm not the only one with it, I'm just the one willing to be out there," he said.

Getting the support he needs

Atkinson said he is grateful that his school "has been very supportive" since his story about his living situation was made public. He said the school staff helped him enroll in a program he was eligible for to receive a stipend, which was enough to help cover his gas.

In a statement to "GMA," Dr. Mechiel Rozas, the superintendent at NYOS Charter School, where Atkinson is currently employed, said, "We respect the privacy of all our staff members, and once we became aware of Mr. Atkinson's situation, we immediately reached out to him to offer local resources and support."

"We encourage any staff member experiencing financial difficulties to contact HR confidentially. We can provide information on resources such as financial counseling, emergency grants, and assistance programs," Rozas continued. "We are committed to advocating for higher wages and exploring long-term solutions, such as providing information on affordable housing options and engaging in ongoing discussions with local leaders and officials. We also encourage parents and staff to express their concerns about teacher pay by providing feedback to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) or contacting local state representatives."

She added, "Engaging in local and state advocacy efforts is crucial in addressing the broader issues affecting educators."

Meanwhile, Ovidia Molina, the president of Texas State Teachers Association told "GMA" that Atkinson's story is not unique among educators.

"Unfortunately, we have a lot of educators that are almost in that position, if not in that position," she explained. "We have educators that can't live in the same area where they teach, even if they wanted to, and so it's just very frustrating to know that as an educator, we're not valued enough to be paid, and this isn't by our districts, this is by our state."

Molina shared that her organization recently did a survey and found that a third of their members who participated in the survey have a second or third job to support themselves and their families.

"So we know that our educators, from teachers in the classroom to bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria workers, all educators are having to figure out how to make ends meet, because they want to stay in education, they want to make that change for a child and for a community," she said.

Advocating for a change for educators

In the United States, the average annual salary for public school teachers for the 2022-23 school year was $69,544, according to educator pay data compiled by the National Education Association . Though that number represents a 4.1% increase from the previous year, and the average salary is projected to rise another 3.1% in 2023-24, the NEA states that "even with record-level increases in some states, average teacher pay has failed to keep up with inflation over the past decade."

"Adjusted for inflation, on average, teachers are making 5% less than they did 10 years ago," the NEA states on its website.

"Chronic low pay is plaguing the profession," it continues. "A staggering 77% of U.S. school districts still pay a starting salary below $50,000 (28.6% start out teachers at less than $40,000), while teacher salaries top out over $100,000 in only 16.6% of districts."

Despite the hardship he experienced, Atkinson said he is still passionate about being a teacher, adding that he is inspired by the teachers who looked out for him as a child.

However, Atkinson said he is hoping to see some changes in the support provided for educators, especially in terms of their wages.

"I don't know a single teacher that wants a mansion," he said. "We want to be able to pay our bills, have a decent place to live, you know, and if we're in our 30s and single, a place to live without a roommate [and be able to] buy food."

He added, "We are asking to be treated like professionals, because that's what we are."

Intel's Core Ultra 200V chips aim for AI PC dominance

The race to build the most compelling AI PC processors continues with the launch of Intel's Core Ultra 200V. At Computex in June , we learned these "Lunar Lake" laptop chips would feature a powerful 48 TOPS (tera operations per second) neural processing unit for AI work, and, surprisingly enough, they'd also sport up to 32GB of built-in memory for faster performance and lower power consumption. Today at Germany's IFA trade show, Intel has given us an even closer look at its next-generation AI PC hardware.

According to Intel, the Core Ultra 200V will be "the most efficient x86 processor ever," with up to 50 percent lower on-package power consumption. In addition to bringing memory directly on the chip, Intel also doubled the cache and core count (reaching 4MB and 4 cores) for its "Low Power Island," which handles less demanding work. Performance per watt has also more than doubled across general performance and gaming, thanks tot he new Xe2 built-in GPU. (One example: Intel claims the Core Ultra 200V uses 35 percent less power than the previous generation, while also getting 32 percent faster performance.)

It's clear that Intel is gunning directly for Qualcomm, whose Arm-based Snapdragon chips have traditionally been more power efficient than x86 processors. Intel even claims it has a lead in battery life. In one test performed on the same laptop model, the Core Ultra 7 268V lasted for 20.1 hours in the UL Procyon Office Productivity benchmark, compared to 18.4 hours with a Qualcomm X Elite chip. The Snapdragon system still maintained a lead in a Microsoft Teams 3x3 test, lasting 12.7 hours compared to the Intel 268V's 10.7 hours.

In practically every way, the Core Ultra 200V is a rethinking of Intel's traditional x86 processor design. For example, the company has given up on its Hyperthreading technology, which virtually allowed a single CPU core to support multiple task threads. Instead, Intel is optimizing the new chips for single-threaded performance. The company claims the Core Ultra 200V's P-cores (performance) are 14 percent faster than the last generation, and its E-cores (efficiency) are a whopping 68 percent faster.

Unlike Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips, Intel's Core Ultra 200V processors can also run legacy x86 software without any issue. There's no emulation slowdown or Arm incompatibility to worry about. While I was impressed by the Snapdragon X Elite chips on the Surface Pro and XPS 13 Copilot+ systems , Windows on Arm performance issues remains, like their inability to play games with strong anti-cheat protection like Fortnite . If you're at all worried about running older software or games, it makes sense to stick with an x86 chip for the next few years.

While the Core Ultra 200V series tops out with 8-core 8-thread processors, Intel says it's up to three times faster than its previous chips when it comes to performance per thread. And if that's not boastful enough, Intel also claims its new Xe2 GPU is 32 percent faster than before, 68 percent speedier than Qualcomm's 12-core X Elite chip and 16 percent better than AMD's HX 370. The Xe2 also adds an additional 67 TOPS of AI compute performance, in addition to the NPU's 48 TOPS.

When it comes to AI, Intel claims the Core Ultra 9 288V's NPU is 79 percent faster denoising in Adobe Lightroom compared to its previous chip. The Snapdragon X Elite 78-100, meanwhile, was 66 percent slower than Intel's last chip. As always, we'll need to do our own testing to confirm the company's figures, but it's clearly not being shy about its potential performance leads.

The Intel Core Ultra 200V family tops out with the Ultra 9 288V, which features eight cores (4P + 4E) with up to 5.1GHz Max Turbo speeds on the P cores. That model also comes stacked with hte most powerful 8-core Xe2 Arc 140V GPU and 32GB of RAM. While all of the 200V chips feature 8-cores, their respective GPU, NPU and RAM all scale down across the line. The bottom-rung Core Ultra 226V, for example, sports a 7-core Arc GPU, 40 TOPS NPU and 16GB of RAM.

Just like Apple's M-series chips, the Core Ultra 200V's built-in memory means you won't be able to upgrade your memory down the line. That's a particular shame, as we're finally easily upgradable LPCAMM2 memory making its way to notebooks. At least Intel isn't forcing anyone to permanently live with 8GB of RAM, though.

Intel Core Ultra 200V systems will be available on September 24th from major manufacturers like Dell, ASUS and Acer.
