Education | Anne Arundel Public Schools up penalties for late assignments, chronically absent students

Author

The changes are designed to increase student responsibility and provide more time for teachers to focus on instruction, he said in a statement.

“Just as our teachers have a responsibility to deliver quality instruction, our students have a responsibility to get their work done on time,” Bedell said in a statement. “Our school system granted a great deal of leniency during the pandemic, but the pandemic is over and we need to strengthen the regulations and allow teachers to focus on instruction and not as many re-dos of student work.”

The changes come after talks with principals, school leadership teams, students and parent groups, Bedell said during a a county school board meeting in July.

Changes to high school grading

The number of re-dos — when an assignment is completed again — students can turn in has been reduced from three to two per class per marking period and must be categorized as an “assessment” in a teacher’s gradebook, meaning projects aren’t eligible for them.

A progressive penalty structure will be put in place for assignments handed in late, which will be detailed at a later date. Late assignments are not eligible for a redo.

Chronically absent students may have credits withheld, regardless of their grade in the class.

Students in all grades who take Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate courses may opt out of the fourth marking period if they are taking the AP or IB exam.

At the middle and high school levels, the grading scale now defines an E as 50% to 59%. Previously, students could have a grade below 50%. That grade will now be called Unsatisfactory.

“I received feedback from parents that the bar is not high enough,” said Bedell during his address at July’s school board meeting. “So, if Anne Arundel County wants to be one of the best in the country we must raise the bar. And what I know about our students is that they will jump over that bar.”
