5 Valuable Things I Learned as a HUMSS Student

Jun 29, 2018

By : Faten Joyce Aquino

Senior high school helps discover our strengths and realize our weaknesses, in order to bring out the best in us. It’s also a chapter where we get a glimpse of the things we can expect in college and where we meet teachers who will push you to think and do things for yourself.

I am a Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) strand graduate. As I look back on the vivid memories of my senior high school life— all of the heated classroom debates, textbook readings, speeches I had to memorize, and performance practices— all of these have taught me some of the most valuable things about life in general. Here are five most valuable things I will take as a HUMSS student.

It trains you to think and consider ALL sides of a situation.

It’s common in a HUMSS classroom to be knee deep in debates, especially if the topic interests everyone. Whether you are involved in the action or are standing in the sidelines, you’ll get to hear all kinds of information and opinions. You’ll learn how to weigh each one, sort them out, and decide for yourself what would be the best course of action. Being exposed to this, one good thing you will understand is the value of listening. I’ve had Disciplines and Ideas in the Applied Social Sciences subjects in HUMSS and I found it really useful especially that one of the topics in it is counseling.

The avid reader and the aspiring know-it-all are both at an advantage here.

If you’re the kind of person who finds yourself randomly hitting some article you found in the internet or someone who just believes that #KnowledgeIsPower, congrats! You’ll fit right in. A HUMSS classroom is a hub for information sharing and includes a lot of conversations and exchange of ideas . You’ll most likely have the upper hand during class discussions.

You will realize that you have power

One thing that the HUMSS subjects instill in you is that you’re powerful as a human being. You’ll learn about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is highly important in our world. You’ll learn about your power as a citizen in Philippine Politics and Governance. You’ll learn the power of your mind in Philosophy. Trust me, learning under the HUMSS strand is an eye-opener.

Confidence will slowly but surely become your second skin.

Even if you’re naturally shy, gradually, you’ll learn how to speak up for yourself. You’ll find that you are comfortable in saying what’s on your mind because that’s what being in the HUMSS strand encourages you to do: to share your thoughts to the world.

Individuality and diversity are welcome.

You’ll learn how to appreciate the differences between people, especially in the subject Introduction to World Religions and Belief Systems and Trends, Networks, as well as Critical Thinking in the 21st Century Culture. Everyone is inherently unique in their own ways. Understanding and embracing it is one step closer towards achieving harmonic coexistence with one another.

Above all else, a HUMSS student isn’t just a curious person. A HUMSS student is a citizen of the world. Once a Humanista, always a Humanista.

ABSTRACT This study used a one-group quasi experimental method and a descriptive-comparative as the research design. The focus of the study is to identify and analyse the common errors committed by the Grade 11 of Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) students from a public school in Quezon City. The gathered data were taken from the written compositions of 176 students. Data were from two different phases called: initial-writing assessment with a title, “My Journey as HUMSS Student” and final-writing assessment with a title of, “How I Met My Best Friend”. Between the two writing tasks, an intervention was given to the participants in three (3) sessions of lesson on the dominant errors. Results showed that the highest number of students committed errors in the initial-writing assessment were the incorrect use of punctuations 128, placed in rank 1 and capitalization 116, placed in rank 2, spelling 64, placed in rank 3, subject-verb agreement 59, placed in rank 4, and dangling modifiers 55, placed in rank 5. Other errors were verb tense 48, placed in rank 6, misplaced modifiers 29, placed in rank 7, preposition 17, placed in rank 8, and parallelism 15, placed in rank 9. Consequently, after the intervention/treatment was given to the students, the number of errors found in the final-writing assessment were reduced except in the use of verb tense. Furthermore, from the four types of Surface Strategy of Taxonomy (SST), the category of Misformation 712, found to have the highest number of frequency of errors, followed by the Omission 453, Addition 53, and Misordering 50 from the initial-writing assessment of the students. Though the number of frequency of errors was reduced in the final-writing assessment, the category of Misformation 689, remained to have the highest number of errors, followed by Omission 235, then Misordering 27, and lastly, the category of Addition has obtained 24 errors. Subsequently, a significant difference occurred after the intervention was given which interpreted that the intervention was able to address the issue in various types of errors, except to the misplaced and dangling modifiers.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the level of social networking sites and students’ self-esteem. This includes some factor namely the level of confidence and time spent in social network. The participants of the study included 30 adolescents from 12 HUMSS students in University of Cebu- Main Senior High School Department. The participants were administered using Social Networking Usage Questionnaire (SNUQ) by Liyaqat Bashir and Gupta Savita and Rosenberg Self -Esteem Scale questionnaire including the demographic profile of the respondents. Findings revealed that most of the respondents are female and Facebook is the commonly used social networking sites. It further revealed that the level of social networking sites usage among student holds high which means they are using this for various reason; the level of students’ self-esteem holds average level. The finding of the study shows that there is no significant relationship between social networking sites usage and students’ self-esteem, which conclude that social networking sites usage and students’ self-esteem does not correlate to each other. Based on the results, the researchers recommend that the respondents may impose time limits on using social networking sites so that it may not affect to their other daily activities such as studying, making school projects and etc.; and the future researchers may conduct similar studies with larger sample size. Keywords: social networking sites usage; students’ self-esteem

Catholic identity is a mark that separates Catholic schools from secular ones. One important tool for communicating this marker is through the school’s website. The aim of the study was to look into the official websites of Catholic schools in the Philippines and to find out how they explicate their Catholic identity. Using the document Ex Corde Ecclesiae, seven markers were used. It employed descriptive research design replicating the methods used by Gambescia and Paolucci in 2011. The result revealed that the Lead Academic Statement is present in 73 out of 75 schools. This is followed by Affiliation with Sponsoring Catholic Entity, 71; Catholic Heritage, 55; Catholic Service, 45; Catholic Worship, 37; Catholic on Homepage, 16; and Human Resource Page, 0. Overall, 297 markers were counted out of the expected 525. Thus, the schools in the Philippines have explicated Catholic identity especially on the first three markers, but much attention should be focused on the bottom four. The study should also investigate the presence of these markers but should not judge the totality of a particular level of Catholicity. However, the school website should not be underestimated in its role to explicate Catholic identity.

This participatory action research journey with teachers from old model C high schools in South Africa investigates the possibility that teaching might be a practical theological engagement that sanctions teachers towards becoming agents of hope for themselves and their colleagues. This qualitative study is built upon an epistemology of a postmodern, postfoundationalist approach to practical theology embodied within a narrative, feminist and social constructionist feminist framework. Such a multi-authored approach to research also creates space for the individual voices of silenced, marginalized and often burnt out teachers to be heard. Through a constant migration between theory and praxis within the habitus of practical theology, the academic discourses about teachers, factors causing stress in their lives and their personal relationship with God are explored. This specific context creates a moment of praxis where teachers can feel empowered and in a position to facilitate social transformation. This research journey thus concerns itself with a critical reflection on the secular and religious aspects as it is understood in the specific context of a teacher. The postfoundationalist approach to practical theology forces a researcher to firstly listen to the stories of people in real life situations and does not merely aim to describe a general context, but confronts the participants with a specific and concrete situation, in this case the state of education in South Africa. Two groups of participants took part in this study. Through conversations the first group conceptualized the factors causing stress in their lives and explored the traditional understanding of having a calling. The question is asked whether the traditional concept of calling is still relevant in the lives of modern day teachers. Concepts like stewardship and servant leadership are offered as alternatives. It is then postulated that the awareness of the presence of God in a teacher’s professional life can change the way that this person perceives a calling, will cope with stress and anxiety, as well as reduce the possibility of them experiencing severe burnout. The second group attended a weekend retreat where these teachers could share hope and encourage each other to take part in healing conversations. They were offered the opportunity to re-author their stories and deconstruct the discourses that shapes their lives and identities as teachers. Subsequently, their preferred identities as teachers with a calling to be stewards for the Kingdom of God were strengthened through conceptualizing the influence that living according to such an identity can have on their relationship with the Department of Education, their colleagues, themselves and their relationship with God. The teachers attending the retreat also defined and conceptualized a school driven by a calling. They further committed to transform their school to becoming such a school driven by a calling. Seeing themselves as practical theologians does not eliminate the factors that cause stress in teachers’ lives, but it becomes the driving force that keeps them coping in times of duress. The participants in this research journey learned that having a calling to teach requires a daily commitment to being in the service of God, to viewing the children and the situation in education in South Africa through the eyes of God. Being a practical theologian creates a different kind of responsibility in the Christian teacher, because they are now accountable to an alternative source than only the Department of Education, they answer to God. Thus they become the hands and feet of God in their classrooms and in turn, serve as guardians and agents of hope for each other. Key words: Practical theology, high school teachers, old model C schools, agents of hope, calling, stewardship, servant leadership, stress, burnout, retreat.

Top 5 Myths And Misconceptions About HUMSS

The Humanities and Social Sciences strand or HUMSS strand is one of the many interesting areas you can take in Senior High School. It focuses on the study of human behavior and society, culture, literature, politics, and other fascinating topics. But like any other strand in SHS, there are many misguided beliefs, misconceptions, or irrational fears that students might have about HUMSS. If you have heard scary stories about HUMSS strand that can make you want to back out, don’t worry! Not all of these things are true and we’re here to debunk some of these myths:

HUMSS is for people who hate math

“Nag HUMSS ka kase ayaw mo sa math ‘no?” While it is true that there isn't as much math in HUMSS compared to other strands like ABM and STEM, HUMSS subjects are also just as complex and will require hard work from its students. Ika nga, kailangan mo pa rin ng sipag at tiyaga para maging matagumpay sa strand na ito, just like in any other strand!

There is no future in HUMSS

“Wala naman trabaho sa HUMSS.” Ever heard this statement? Did you know that contrary to popular belief, careers in HUMSS can also have a high earning potential? Depending on the field you’re planning to go into, you can earn as high as PHP 400,000 per year with a job as a Technical Writer or PHP 300,000 as a Public Relations Specialist ! Just because wala ka sa engineering or business field doesn't mean the future couldn’t be as bright for HUMSS graduates. HUMSS students have the freedom to take on college courses and professions that are just as important and fulfilling. Lawyers, content strategists, psychometricians, and educators among others can be lucrative jobs too!

You have to be good at public speaking to succeed in HUMSS

Although HUMSS deals with communicating and interacting with people most of the time, it doesn't mean you have to be a master at debate and public speaking! Even HUMSS students encounter stage fright too. But since a lot of activities in HUMSS involve technical and creative writing, as well as reading discussions, you can definitely have the chance to develop important skills in public speaking which can be a very valuable skill in the future.

HUMSS students are only good at writing

"Sulat dito, sulat doon." A lot of activities in HUMSS do include writing essays, term papers, reviews, and other things of this sort. However, this doesn’t mean passing and succeeding HUMSS is an easy feat! We’ve all been required to do research tasks and write academic papers at some point in our lives so we can all agree that writing isn’t as easy as many people thought it is, right?

Having the ability to write creatively and well-written is a skill that not everyone can skillfully execute. It involves other important skills like research skills, language skills, critical thinking, and hard work to make sure your work is factual and accurate.

HUMSS subjects are easier compared to other strands

Every incoming senior high school student will certainly have to make the important decision of choosing a strand. May ibat’t ibang specialization ang bawat SHS strand at bawat isa ay makatutulng sa’yo sa paghahanda para sa kinabukasan mo. While each strand is designed for certain fields, they each have their unique set of advantages and challenges. It's not accurate nor fair to simply call one strand "easier" than the others. The question then is not about which one is easier but which strand will prepare you for the future you want.

Entering the world of HUMSS can seem overwhelming for incoming SHS students, but it takes time and facts to learn more about the strand.. With all these myths busted, we hope you now understand what the field is all about and what it’s not. If you are a student in college or university, you may be wondering why essays feature so heavily in your academic career. Regardless of your major, you will probably have to write several essays each semester. In fact, essay writing is viewed as such an important skill that students are given basic essay writing assignments from as early as elementary school.

Because essay writing can be a challenge, many students naturally feel averse to it. With so many overwhelming commitments and deadlines, it is lucky that students can easily order essay online to avoid failing. That said, essay writing can help you to gain valuable lifelong skills under the right circumstances. This article will explore some of them.

Why do we get many essay assignments?

Before we go into how essay writing is useful, let us look at why students have to write so many essays. Although the academic essay has been an integral part of the higher education experience for centuries, students today are given more frequent and harder essay assignments. Why?

You may be surprised to learn that the Internet played a crucial role in increasing our essay writing workload. Because so much information has been moved from dusty tomes and academic textbooks onto the web, people can access information quicker and more conveniently than ever.

Therefore, there is no longer a need for the academic system to prioritize memorization and recollection. While examinations and recitation used to be the standard way to assess learning, they are now largely irrelevant. Instead, educational institutions are focusing their efforts on developing higher-level abilities such as critical thinking.

Hence, essay writing is now widely utilized as an effective method of evaluating the understanding and analytical skills of students. If you are wondering how this shift in the education system helps you, here are the advantages that you can gain from essay writing.

1. You learn to research and analyze evidence

If students want to create an excellent essay, they must be able to correctly locate and make use of evidence that is relevant to the topic. Finding relevant sources of information from academic journals, the Internet, and independent research is a painstaking and involved process. When doing research for your essay, you learn how to conduct efficient research and separate useful knowledge from extraneous (albeit interesting) information.

Instead of simply regurgitating concepts that you studied in class, essay writing forces you to use critical thinking. You need to determine the kind of evidence that you need and undertake the relevant research to find it. Then, you must differentiate reputable and disreputable sources of information and apply standards to the evidence that you use to support your claims.

2. You learn to construct and defend arguments

It is futile having a strong opinion about a subject without having the skills to explain your point of view and persuade others to accept it. In the process of writing an essay, you learn how to formulate and defend your arguments. You learn to develop your idea from a single point and expand it into several smaller arguments that cover various facets of the issue. In short, you learn how to give your arguments substance.

Being able to effectively communicate one’s ideas is an important part of any profession. It also helps you to become a more well-rounded person. When writing an argumentative essay, you practice anticipating and addressing opposing views, which teaches you to see your issue from different perspectives. Through essay writing, you learn to articulate your thoughts in a way that is both clear and convincing.

3. You improve your writing skills

Essay writing allows you to put your talents to the test. You can improve your overall writing ability and confidence by routinely practicing writing. When you write an essay, you become familiar with mechanical writing skills, such as grammar, spelling, and punctuation, which are critical in all forms of written communication. Outside of academia, these writing skills will help you in many aspects of your future career.

Furthermore, essay writing provides you with the opportunity to receive expert feedback. Higher education is a time for academic and personal growth. Essay writing allows you to share your thoughts and writing skills with respected professionals who have a wealth of insight and experience. Whether you send your essay to a professional editor or your professor, you will come away with valuable advice on how to improve.

4. You learn to organize effectively

Essay writing is not merely about writing. It takes a fair measure of time management and organization to fit research, planning, and writing into your busy study schedule. You also apply organizing skills to information as you consider how to best structure your content to create the most compelling arguments. As you move blocks of time and pieces of information around in your head, you become a more effective organizer.

Students are receiving essay assignments more regularly today than ever before. As essay requirements become more demanding and difficult, it helps to remember that the exercise is designed to develop your skills and not just a sadistic requirement from your professors. However, if you are truly unable to cope with your essay workload, it can help to hire a professional essay writer to lend a hand.

Here’s Why Choosing HUMSS Strand is For You!

male HUMSS student

The HUMSS strand is a promising track choice for incoming senior high school students with a desire to pursue careers in social studies, creatives, and many more. However, most incoming senior high students actually come into their SHS distance learning experience not knowing what course to pick. In this article, we go over why choosing the HUMSS strand is an advantageous choice to make. If you are heading into senior high school are not sure what strand to get, here are a few reasons why incoming SHS students must choose HUMSS!

What is HUMSS?

HUMSS stands for Humanities & Social Sciences—a popular track among hopeful artists and students that are hoping to pursue careers in social studies, and literature among many others. HUMSS is all about educating students on the foundations of the human behavior and how they have come to influence different societal phenomenon such as arts, culture, religion, literature, and even the politics of their era.

HUMSS is meant to be the doorway to a bright future ahead with plenty of options for its graduates to figure out the lives they truly want. If you are a senior high school student that is decided on HUMSS or is considering taking it, below are some our top reasons why you should choose HUMSS as your SHS track.

Flexible Applications

Because of the versatility that HUMSS courses can offer after you finish senior high school, graduates can look forward to having several options about how they move forward with their future. From the type of HUMSS courses they pursue after graduating senior high, to the kind of internships they want to apply to in order to gain workplace experience and decide on the career they want, one reason why the HUMSS strand is a popular pick is because it can be a springboard to very distinct specializations while offering you a chance to discern if they are right for you.

Core HUMSS subjects such as Philosophy and Social Sciences make for great foundations to a pre-law degree in college. On the other hand, learning about Art & Art History in combination with Mathematics can set you up for a degree in courses like Architecture or Interior Design. The list of options is endless so if you want a track that keeps your choices open, the freedom to choose is an excellent reason to pick HUMSS.

Multiple Job Opportunities

Bouncing off of the flexible applications benefit that HUMSS affords its students, the access to a wide job market alone is a great reason why choosing HUMSS as a strand is a smart move. Whether you go the creative or sociological route of your HUMSS strand education, you have plenty of possible HUMSS strand jobs to choose from when applying for employment. Because many positions utilize the skills and knowledge that senior high students enrolled in HUMSS have, it is significantly easier to get hired compared to strands that are far more focused and technical.

If you want to secure your chances of quickly getting hired amid other applicants, then you can count on your HUMSS education to help pave the way to a successful job application.

Chances for Connecting with People

Among the different strands offered by SHS distance learning as well as any other senior high program, it is HUMSS that is the most people-centric in nature. HUMSS directly deals with studying the human body and its interactions with the world around us, as well as how we as people interact with each other to form societal relationships and manifest sociological phenomenon. Because of this, jobs that deal in HUMSS are often very interpersonal in nature—requiring plenty of empathy, extraversion, and reflection on the different aspects of human culture that occur around us.

If you love the idea of working with people or studying cultural and sociological phenomenon to determine valuable findings, then this chance is a great reason why should choose HUMSS over other options.

student presenting

Level Up Your Confidence

Not all HUMSS students come into the course with a penchant for extroversion and communication. Some come into the course in order to learn more about how society and man co-exist and interact within our natural world. More introverted students that prefer the company of books and research papers may benefit from the exposure and chances for communication that being in HUMSS can teach them. While there is no need for introverted students to suddenly become extroverts overnight, the chance to find your stride when it comes to communicating confidently is a great reason for you to pick HUMSS in the first place.

Communicating with others is not the only source of confidence you can build at HUMSS. With the strand being a logic and critical thinking-heavy choice, students enrolled in it will be forced to take their time when thinking critically and logically. By using logic and reasoning to deduce their theories and decide on arguments, building valuable skills in public speaking and presentation are also important whenever you try to build your case for class tasks.

Build Understanding & Maturity

An underrated benefit of choosing the HUMSS strand is how it builds your understanding and empathy as a person. By learning more about the different schools of thought, as well as sociological phenomenon and cultures from all over the world, students within the strand can develop a deeper understanding and a wider world view that takes the motivations and background of others into account.

This benefit goes beyond the obvious rewards it will yield within classroom and workplace settings. Rather, the increased understanding and maturity can also manifest in your personal life and relationships. Practice kindness and keep a cool head by always thinking of where the other person is coming from.

Get Into the Habit of Seeing the Big Picture

By choosing the HUMSS strand, you sign yourself up for an educational experience that encourages you to face truths and take the bigger picture into consideration— even if at times, this truth can be uncomfortable. If you are an incoming SHS student, the opportunity to build a habit of seeing things from the bigger picture can help you make sounder decisions later on into your tertiary education and eventually, in your career and personal life.

This habit of being able to evaluate a situation by considering all sides is a useful one to build because of how it prepares you for valuable skills such as financial planning, project management, and even policy-making should politics be among your interests. It is also a perfectly valid reason for incoming senior high students to choose HUMSS over other strands.

Weigh these Reasons Carefully Before Making a Choice

Deciding on a senior high school track to follow is a difficult task, and is one that you should not take lightly. Difficulties in Writing Encountered by Humanities and Social Sciences Students of Rosario National High School: A Basis for Writing Remediation Program

  • Joy Del Rosario

INTRODUCTION

Writing is a medium of communication in which one's thoughts and ideas are expressed. It is one of the vital skills students should learn and develop. Writing follows a very complex process which makes it a difficult skill to be learned. Though writing has been taught since elementary years, it is still one of the macro-skills that students found difficulty dealing with. Difficulties include grammar, vocabulary, organization of thoughts, spelling, and capitalization. In order, therefore, to improve the writing skills of the students, a writing remediation program could be the solution.

Employing a quantitative research design, the areas in writing wherein Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS)students found difficulty dealing with were assessed and the proficiency level of students in writing was measured. A researcher-made questionnaire was used to collect data for this research work. It was administered to sixty-four HUMSS students comprising thirty boys and thirty-four girls.

The study revealed that among the areas of writing, HUMSS students found most difficulty dealing with grammar. Next, to grammar, students were also having difficulty in the organization of thoughts. Vocabulary ranked third among the areas of writing in which students were having difficulty dealing with. It was followed by spelling which ranked fourth. And the last area was capitalization. In terms of proficiency in writing, it was found out that among 64 students, only 10 students (15.63%) have average grades of 90-94 in their writing subjects. Only 19 students (29.69%) got average grades of 85-89. Most HUMSS students were performing at an average level for 23 (35.94%) of them have average grades of 80-84. And there were 12 students (18.75%) who have average grades of 75-79.

DISCUSSIONS

The results demonstrate the need for a writing remediation program that may be used to improve the writing skills and proficiency level of the students. Implementation of writing remediation program would enhance the skills of HUMSS students in different areas of writing.
