My Childhood Home Essay

The house, which left indelible, beautiful and vivid memories in my memory and the house, which all guests love to visit and leave with reluctance is the house of my childhood. Thus, in this paper it is necessary to talk about the house of my childhood, because it is really a wonderful place that made me happy for some period of time when I was little and had carefree life.

First of all it is necessary to mention that the house of my childhood is a three-storey house with balcony located in Bogota, Columbia. The house is overlooking the street and wood floor stairs inside it always seemed as something mysterious because of their low squeak and specific wooden aroma. Thinking about rooms I remember from my childhood that all of them were rather big with excellent natural light because of wide windows with funny curtains.

In my family are four members and we have enough place for everyone and everything. Describing functional necessity of every room it is necessary to say that one room was for the parents, other room for the sister, my own room and mother’s cabinet. If to be more specific in details, mother’s cabinet was not really cabinet in its ordinary meaning, but the room which she used to sew different clothes. It was a well-equipped room, the room not only with special table, but also with sewing machine and several dummies. Mother spent a lot of time there and created very beautiful and extraordinary clothes using own imagination and her special equipment for this purpose.

The next room which I want to describe is my own room. There is no doubt that it was my favorite place, where I spent many hours reading interesting books and watching TV. There were not many furniture there, but I had a wooden bed, bookcase, table, several chairs and green armchair near the window. Walls were painted in several mild colors and I was happy to have such room, because all my friends had ordinary rooms with single-color walls, but my room was special Comparing my own and sister’s rooms it is important to say that her room was quite different and looks like a room for real princess with pink walls and a big variety of bright details everywhere. We usually liked to visit the room of each other and it was a kind of game when we were trying to change some details and find 10 differences in it.

A small backyard that is used for a dog Ranger to live was a place of different outside sports and rest. My favorite place was a brown garden bench near the big apple tree there. Frankly speaking, it was a wonderful place for looking after the kitchen, because when mother was cooking something tasty my sister and I were trying to taste it as soon as possible.

Thus, summarizing memories about the house of my childhood I want to add that due its specific building project it was the best place for my family. All rooms were filled by daily light during the whole day and I believe that light even helped members of my family to be in good mood from day to day. I believe that every house has its own soul, but nowadays I understood that peace of mind depends on harmony in the house where you spent your childhood. It is really right to say for the conclusion that the house of my childhood is my refuge, a place where I feel safe and comfortable.

My childhood home became my world during the pandemic. Then, we moved

When I first moved away from home and into my college dorm, my family bought a new couch.

They replaced our brown, well-worn leather sofa with a tan sectional, featuring cupholders and a reclining option for every family member — even a corner for the dog. Then, they fostered a puppy. He was young and hyperactive and antagonized our dog by jumping on his back and stealing his bed.

I thought our house — a place I had called home my entire life — couldn’t have changed any more than that. But in March 2020, I moved back home because of the coronavirus pandemic .

And then, in what had already become an upside-down world, we moved out of my childhood home altogether.

A house full of memories

My parents moved into our white house with hunter green doors and matching shutters right after it was built in 1999. It was a new neighborhood in Charlotte, North Carolina, with one main street lined with tract houses, each with a square plot of land out front marked with a tree. As I grew up, so did the neighborhood, expanding into the community that it is today.

That house was where I first met my two younger brothers after they were taken home from the hospital. It’s where we all learned to walk, watched “The Wiggles” for hours on end and memorized multiplication tables. At that kitchen table, I was told about my mom’s pregnancy, the marriage of my aunt and the death of grandparents. Every monumental event in my life was rooted to that house.

My move back home mid-sophomore year became yet another defining experience tied to that physical space.

The pandemic transformed my house into my entire world. With local stay-at-home orders, there was nowhere else to go. My desk became my classroom, and, later that summer, it served as my newsroom during my first journalism internship. Our kitchen table became part office, part co-working space. The playroom turned into a dorm lounge, where I would talk with my brothers and sometimes join them for a video game when the boredom really sunk in.

And my favorite place of all, our living room, turned into our movie theater as we watched a full lineup of shows and movies each night, starting with “Jeopardy!” and usually ending with a rerun of “The Office.”

Nostalgia was a comforting emotion to surround myself with. The past was fixed. And the future had never been more uncertain.

Our house was well lived in. Closets overflowed, our attic was full, and in every drawer, you could find old crayons, a lost pair of scissors and a drawing from someone’s elementary school art class. I didn’t like to throw things away. What if I needed it one day? Every nook and cranny was occupied by something, and even if it seemed like we didn’t have enough room, we’d make some.

My parents had always said we would move one day. But it was always one of those far-off notions — something that may happen someday but not anytime soon.

But when our house became our whole world and our weekends were limited to entertainment inside, my parents started taking on home improvement projects. We repainted my room from neon turquoise to a neutral beige. We fixed the doorknob-shaped hole in our playroom wall and painted over the crayon drawings hidden in our old playroom. I remember having a passing thought that maybe it was all done just so we could live more comfortably here.

But I soon found out the reality: We were getting it ready to sell it.

Uprooting — fueled in large part by remote work — has become a part of the pandemic narrative. Data from the United States Postal Service shows that in 2020, more than 7 million households moved to a different county as many people moved from big cities to the suburbs, an increase of half a million compared to 2019. But the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University found that these upticks in early and late 2020 did not represent "a significant change from prior years in the total number of moves."

Whatever trend the data ultimately end up validating, my family's move was just one of many during remarkably unsettling times.

Growing up, I liked the idea of moving. It always sounded exciting. Anytime a new student joined my class, I would pepper them with questions: How did you pack everything? How could you carry it? How did your furniture fit through doors?

But in June 2020, my parents told us over dinner that we were officially selling the house. It was finally my turn to go through the excitement of a big move, but I felt more like a child forced to part with her security blanket.

During the early days of the pandemic, my friends and I joked that we had regressed. I started re-watching my favorite show from high school, “The Vampire Diaries,” and reread every single “Percy Jackson” book, including the spinoff series. I forced my brothers to play old board games like the Game of Life, Trouble and Sorry with me. Nostalgia was a comforting emotion to surround myself with. The past was fixed. And the future had never been more uncertain.

So the idea of packing everything up and moving into a new space gave me a feeling of grief for the 20 years I had spent there. I’d never again look out my window and see the view of our empty backyard, which had been occupied by a play set and then a trampoline at various times in my life. I’d miss running in our neighborhood’s perfect loop or walking my dog on his favorite route. And I’d miss being able to lean over the railing of the second story to have a conversation with my family downstairs.

For (my brothers), the new house looked like a brand new playground. To me, I felt like I was finally leaving one.

My family moved just as Charlotte was entering a hot seller's market, mirroring a real estate trend seen across the country. By the end of 2020, inventory in the city shrank 28.4% and sales increased by 8.5%, leading to a 32% decrease in the supply of homes, according to the Charlotte Business Journal .

In a sign of the times — with many buyers waiving contingencies and home inspections — the family who bought our old house wrote my parents a letter when they submitted an offer, expressing their vision of raising their two young children there. It felt like we were passing our house down to a family with kids who would grow up there, just like my brothers and I had.

My parents bought a house about 10 minutes away, and we were set to move the first week of August. This coincided with the last week of my summer internship and was exactly one week before I was set to move back to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to start my junior year of college. 

Packing was the worst part. I tried to keep everything organized, but as I continued to put off the task, I ended up throwing everything into brown boxes, refusing to think about the experience of unpacking it all.

On the last day, everything was bare. The furniture was gone, the closets were empty and it didn’t even look like a home anymore. My best friend came over to help me move the essentials, and so she could get one last look at the house that was the backdrop of our friendship.

I recorded a video while walking through each of the rooms. I remember being so terrified that I’d forget what it looked like. I took a picture with my parents in front of our green door. I’m smiling, but there are tears on my cheeks.

Moving into the new house was a blur. Breaking news meant that I was constantly glued to my computer as the university desk editor of The Daily Tar Heel, and I barely looked up to notice what the new house looked like. My room remained filled with boxes, with just a desk for work and a bed to sleep in. I’ll unpack later, I remember telling myself.

My brothers were ecstatic about the move. The new house meant more space and a flat driveway, so they could finally set up a basketball hoop outside. For them, the new house looked like a brand new playground. To me, I felt like I was finally leaving one.

But then I moved into my first college apartment the next week. And it wasn’t until winter break that I finally went back home. I told myself that I was too busy to visit, which was true. But there was a part of me that worried that “going home” just wouldn’t feel like being home.

Making a house a home

Due to the pandemic, our winter break that year was long, almost double its normal length. When I got home, the room I had left, sparse and filled with cardboard boxes, was gone. My mom had unpacked everything, even down to setting up my bookshelf and filling it. She found a painting of a blue flower at Home Goods and hung it behind my bed. She put old canvases I had made on the opposite walls and turned the room into something comfortable.

But I didn’t see the physical space. What I saw was my mother’s love and care, wanting to make sure that this new house wasn’t just my family’s home, but mine as well. She always says her favorite times are when we are all under the same roof.

And I realized that’s why I loved my old house so much. Because it marked the place where we all sheltered together in one space, just a few feet away from each other. College took that away. Then a pandemic gave it back. And I perceived moving as taking it away again.

Over that break, I started my first book stack right beside my bed — the first of many. I hung up pictures on the wall and organized my shelves. I moved my desk and ordered my clothes by style, the way I like it.

It marked the first change toward becoming my room in the new house — the house that kept my family together under one roof, and the place I can always come home to.

7 Writing Prompts On Essays About Childhood Memories

Think back to one beloved childhood memory and retell the story in your essay. Then, describe all of the details you can recall, such as; who was involved, where the memory took place, what events transpired, and why it is such an important memory. Next, provide context by explaining the circumstances behind the memory, and most important of all, be sure to explain how this memory made you feel. Finally, use descriptive language to convey why this memory is your favorite.

Whether good or bad, people say childhood memories are crucial to who you are today. Why is this the case? In your essay, write about the value of keeping your childhood memories close. Then, write about any lessons you learned from them, and include a mix of supporting details from research and your opinions. 

Describe the home you lived in as a child- the layout, the neighborhood, the living conditions, and whatever else you can think of. Did you like it? Childhood memories always bring smiles to our faces because of the innocence that lies within them. People feel happy when they think about and discuss these memories.

One of my strongest childhood memories is playing in the park with my best friend. We would spend hours there, running and playing on the swings and slides. The sun would beat down on us as we giggled and chased each other, and our laughter echoed in my mind even now. We would also play games of tag and hide and seek and always have fun. I remember feeling so carefree and happy in those moments, with no worry. These memories of playing in the park with my best friend bring back feelings of pure joy and innocence, and I will always treasure them as some of my fondest childhood memories.

Memory is an interesting and important part of our lives. When I look back on my childhood, I recall many stories. Some make me happy, and others help me learn and grow.

Summer At My grandparents

One of my fondest childhood memories is spending summers at my grandparents' house in the countryside. The lush green fields and tall trees surrounded the house, and I loved going on adventures with my cousins through the fields and woods. We would spend hours playing hide and seek, building forts, and catching fireflies at night.

My grandfather was always around, tending to the garden or working on some new project. He taught me how to fish in the nearby stream, and we would spend hours together on the bank, chatting and enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

The days at my grandparents' house seemed to stretch forever, filled with laughter and joy. The house was always filled with the scent of fresh baked goods, and my grandmother would spend hours in the kitchen whipping up delicious meals. I will always treasure these memories of spending time with my grandparents and cousins in the peaceful countryside. They are a reminder of the simple joys in life and make me grateful for the people and experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today.

They range from the mundane to the elegant, the funny to the touching, but most of them are vague and elusive, often irrelevant, and sometimes downright unnatural.Childhood memories shape one's identity and provide comfort and familiarity. They also serve as a source of nostalgia, reminding us of happy times and special moments that bring joy and a feeling of connection to the past. They also help us understand our family history, cultural background, and experiences that have shaped us into who we are today.

My Childhood Memory

One of my most memorable childhood memories is playing with my friends in my neighborhood. I grew up in a small village surrounded by lush green trees and rolling hills. My friends and I would spend hours exploring the woods, building forts, and playing games. We were always outside, regardless of the weather, and we never seemed to run out of things to do.

One of our favorite games captured the flag. We would divide into two teams, each with their own flag that they would hide. The game's objective was to capture the other team's flag and bring it back to your base without getting tagged. The games would last for hours and were always filled with laughter, screams, and running.

Another memory I have is of baking cookies with my grandmother. She lived next door to us, and every time we visited, she always had some baked treat waiting for us. My sister and I would help her mix the ingredients, roll out the dough, and cut out the cookies. Then, we would watch as they baked to perfection in the oven. The smell of freshly baked cookies would fill the entire house, and it was a smell I would always associate with my grandmother.

These memories are special to me because they represent my childhood's carefree and joyful times. They remind me of the importance of spending time with loved ones and enjoying the simple things in life. I am grateful for these memories and how they bring a smile to my face every time I think about them.

Returning to my childhood home, and memories of my late father

They say you can never go home again. Well, I disagree.

Thirty-seven years ago, my father died from pancreatic cancer. It was the day after my seventeenth birthday.

The six-week nightmare, from diagnosis to death, plunged my life into a state I no longer recognized. Although it was summer, it seemed the sunlight refused to shine through the tall windows facing our grassy backyard. Regardless of the L.A. heat outside, inside was bleak and shadowy.

The walls, once witness to boisterous family dinners, barbecues, birthday, pool and slumber parties, became painted in grief. We tiptoed through the hallways and my parents’ bedroom without making a sound so my dad could rest. Sometimes his reflexive hiccups were the only sound.

A year after my father passed, we sold the home that my parents built in the hills while my mother was pregnant with me. Packing up my childhood home and all the memories it contained was painful, not to mention daunting.

I had saved everything: crumpled notes passed in class, fading fortune cookie fortunes, a plethora of Barbies replete with flashy wardrobe, board games with missing pieces. And then there was my precious record collection: a smorgasbord of disparate musical tastes ranging from Kool & the Gang to The Partridge Family.

For a long time afterward, I struggled to remember the good times we had in our home — family game nights where someone always cheated at Monopoly (usually me), late-night summer swims and Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass wafting through the house — since the memories were so tainted with our loss.

For the past 30 years, once a year, I’ve made the drive up the long steep road to our old home. I’ve parked my car outside the black iron gate and peeked through the slats, so I could see the blacktop of our wide front yard where we’d spend hours doing relay races and playing tag until our mom summoned us for dinner.

I always fought my desire to ring the doorbell, greet the new owners and walk through the house one last time, fearful that the memories would overpower me and tear at the wound again.

Filled with fear, I stopped short at the driveway pushing away my longing, as if I was brushing crumbs off my sweater. And each time I resigned myself to the fact that I probably would never step inside my childhood home ever again.

Then, one night, we agreed to go out to dinner with new friends — a lovely couple we kept running into from our neighborhood. The conversation was effortless and drifted to a discussion about our kids.

I shared that both of my kids are in their 20s, my daughter was working in advertising, my son was attending graduate school. They told me they have a son in his 30s who is married and remodels houses in the area. He had just completed a home in the hills, they said, and the wife mentioned the street. I felt a rush through my body. “That’s the name of the street I grew up on. What is the address?”

A quick text to her son and seconds later, she showed me his answer. I felt my heart catch in my chest. It was my home.

The following Sunday was a broker’s open house and we were welcome to come by, her son told us. I was beside myself that I would finally be able to see my old home, but I was also torn by mixed feelings. Would it be painful? What would my old bedroom look like? Would I cry?

The sun was shining brightly that Sunday, but I still felt a darkness hovering in my soul. I knew it would look different since it had just been remodeled. What I didn’t know was how I would feel seeing it for the first time in decades..

To my awe and delight, the bones of my old home were intact, but the inside was modernized. White, airy, the rooms were flooded with light, and vibrant jewel-toned artwork canvassed the walls. It was beautiful and breezy, the complete opposite of the 1970s home that had the shag carpeting and bold geometric prints of my parents’ generation.

I stood in the den where my father used to love to read and smoke his pipe in his leather easy chair. It was the room we all piled in to watch the “Movie of the Week” and football games. The very same place where my sister and I held our dance-a-thons with our neighborhood friends.

But it had gone through a makeover. The dark wood paneling and shiny silver and blue metallic wallpaper of its day were gone. Bright white walls that reflected warm beams of sunlight stood in their place.

They had removed the wall between the den and our kitchen creating a great big open space perfect for seating, dining and cooking. Glossy white cabinets had replaced the dark brown cabinets my mother had meticulously stained herself. In the place where our oval white Formica kitchen table used to stand — dominating our world — there now sat a sleek rectangular wooden table with modern white leather chairs.

My bedroom, where I used to spend hours playing school with my imaginary students or giving my army of Barbies my untrained version of a makeover, looked smaller. The uber-feminine bubblegum pink tiled bathroom I shared with my sister had gone through a transformation: It was now slick and ultramodern, all white and gray and chrome.

The house — my house — was so beautiful, so tastefully decorated that it was as if someone sprinkled fairy dust over it. There was no room for sadness or darkness in this magnificent space.

It made me want to celebrate, to throw a party. I left feeling a lightness in me that I hadn’t felt in years.

On the drive back to my current home, I released the memory of my former home that was loaded with despair and gave myself permission to let go of the grief and accept the wonderful gift that I’d been given.

What was always a lovely home had become truly majestic.

There was an amazing side view on the road. I loved the villages of Bihar. The people were friendly. I spent an amazing time with my cousins there. These memories are very bright on my mind and I love to think about all those days.

When the ball went to the pond, someone went and picked it. A boy thought I might know how to swim and he pushed me to the pond. When I was trying to come out of the water but couldn’t he was laughing and thinking that I was making fun. 

But when he realized he jumped and took me off the water. That was a very shocking memory that I can’t forget. It could be worse.

I was pretty confident. I got my new uniform, school bag, some books, and new shoes. And the day came and they took me to school. That is quite a popular school in the city. My parents took me to the headmaster’s room.

My Childhood Home Essay

Quincy, Mass is where my childhood home stands Homes are places that people can go to for warmth, memories and comfort. My childhood home resides or stands in Quincy, MA. The home is full of comfort for me and my family. My home is your typical Cape Code style. It’s gray in color with Maroon shutters. There is a 2 car attached garage. Flowers, bushes and other landscape surround the house. The front living room window is a large bay window that allows a lot of sunlight into the home when the curtains are open.

The large bay window allows you to see a lot of our neighborhood and people passing by as they are out for their daily stroll. Like all homes, my home contains a kitchen. The kitchen represents fond memories of my mom cooking large family dinners on Sundays and togetherness. One fond memory would be coming home from a ride around the neighborhood on my dirt bike and smelling the aroma of baking ham in the oven with a faint hint of freshly baked bread.

Our kitchen was small, with one light on the ceiling. My mom complained a lot over the years about that one light in our kitchen.

I’m not sure why, but it was never replaced to add more lighting options. Still to this day, that one light attached to the ceiling exists. The floor was covered by ceramic tile in an off white color and the walls were painted in a chocolate milk type of color.

Remember, this is the 1970’s/1980’s when home decor was terrible. A large fork and spoon hung on one of our chocolate milk colored walls, as it did in many homes back then. It took a lot of time and effort to beg and plead my mom to switch out that spoon and fork for some more modern type of decor.

Eventually she added some pictures that fit very well into the kitchen. Our kitchen held most of the memories of togetherness, but my room was my sanctuary. My room was upstairs along with 2 other rooms. I had the upstairs to myself since the other rooms were used as storage or for an occasional visitor. The walls in my room were a yellow in color with one wall covered in mock wood paneling. I hated that wall, I was not allowed to attach anything to it nor paint it, and I looked at it as a thorn in my side.

When I was young, I spent a lot of time in my room, drawing, painting, playing my guitar and sometimes just day dreaming. As I grew older, the yellow painted walls were lined with child star pictures from magazines such as River Phoenix and Rob Lowe. My bed was a queen size bed with lots of pillows. I had a blue, white and gray comforter with matching sheets. In my world, my bed was the greatest; it was one big security blanket. I spent many days and afternoons daydreaming on my bed, along with an occasional nap or two. I had 2 windows in my room. One window I kept open a lot.

I could hear and see my neighborhood street and watch for passing stray cats or even a raccoon or two. Many times I would lie on my bed and listen to the rain hitting the roof outside my window and I could smell that rain, that’s a great smell. Other nights I would fall asleep in my bed as a cool breeze flowed through my bedroom leaving the air a little crisp, but oh so comfortable. On winter days, I usually had the window closed, obvious reasons. I would lie on my bed drawing cartoon characters, listening to music, preferably Jimmy Hendrix’s or The Doors.

I should have been born in the 60’s or a hippie in another life. I often fell asleep, just from being so comfortable and at peace in my room. My childhood home didn’t have much of a backyard, it was small. We had a deck that included benches and enough room to grill out and have family and friends over. My mom had lots of flower pots lining the deck and in the summer the flowers were in full bloom and you could smell them throughout the yard and if the windows were open or the patio door, the scents of the flowers would fill our house.

On summer nights my friends and I would play basketball on our driveway. Some nights we would just sit around the yard and chat and make fun of each other. Laughing and joking around in the lush grass of our side yard and hoping my mom would bring us a snack. Sometimes we would even fall asleep in the 2 hammocks my dad had hung in our side yard. Essay on My House:  The world consists of all types of people. Some are fortunate enough to have amenities while some aren’t. I am blessed to be protected by four walls and a roof.

It is my parent’s hard work that has given us this blessing. Many people in today’s world are always complaining about the things they don’t have. The person who has a house wants a bungalow. The one who owns a bungalow wants a palace. The one living in a palace wants an island. This never-ending cycle goes on. However, if we look at the people below us rather than those who are above us, we will be happier.

An Underrated Blessing

Having a house is an underrated blessing. If you have not realized it yet, you can go and ask any person who doesn’t have a house. Only then will you realize what a great blessing it is to have a house. Houses do not necessarily have to be luxuriously filled with the latest amenities. A house is complete if you have a roof over your head.

Moreover, if you have your loved ones around, then there can be no greater blessing. You must realize the importance of your house before it gets too late. Even I never knew how precious my house was up until one incident that changed my outlook.

We had house help growing up. The maid who used to work for us always came early in the morning and would leave in the evening. Even when my mother asked her to leave early as she completed the work on time, she never did that. On the other hand, she used to do extra work. Later we found out that she never really had a house. It was just a hut which had one chair and one folding. And that she liked spending time most of the time at our house because she had access to all basic facilities like electricity and clean water.

This incident made me realize how I took my house for granted. It is truly an underrated blessing which is overlooked by others. We must value our homes before it gets too late.

As he longs to expand his reach to Florida, renowned animal rescuer Lee Asher preaches kindness, spotlights the animals he knows inspire good people to aspire to be better and, maybe, even revolutionizes the concept of an animal sanctuary.

"We should have respect and compassion for all living things. All living things have a soul and a personality," said Asher, who grew up in South Florida and gained fame as the human star of Animal Planet's "My Pack Life" show that he parlayed into millions of followers on social media. "Hate, aggression, is never the answer, not toward animals, not toward people. There is no success reached that way."

His narrative is a quilt of vignettes from Asher's own past told in evocative, emotion-packed videos accessed by 6.3 million people on Facebook, 1.6 million followers each on Instagram and TikTok plus 593,000 subscribers on YouTube.

The story is rooted in a Broward County animal shelter where Asher, as a troubled youth, found solace. It includes five years' worth of road trips in a recreational vehicle from which he launched his campaign to rescue animals from unnecessary euthanasia. And now it plays out in three Pacific Northwest sanctuaries where a land-based Noah's Ark's worth of domestic but discarded pets live their lives in peace with freedom to roam — and provide rescuers and others a potential blueprint on how to do the same.

That's how, perhaps, the world sees it. Asher, 35, looks at it in simpler terms: He lives a life accompanied by the animals he loves.

"Most people that run a sanctuary, or a rescue, do it for similar reasons," he said. "The difference is that I live with all the animals. I spend every single day with them. Even when I am out of town I bring them along. There's nowhere that I go where it's just me."

A troubled childhood, soothed by kinship with shelter animals

Asher struggled with severe attention deficit disorder as a youth. The inability to focus on lessons in textbooks and classroom lectures led to struggles in school, even in special-education classes, and isolated him socially.

During a recent appearance at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Asher spoke of desperation "to fit in" and feeling "very different" from his peers whom he watched succeed and thrive. The struggles worsened, and after a serious bullying incident, Asher was forced to change schools.

Around the age of 12, he said, he began visiting a Broward County animal shelter where he found consolation, and kinship, with the dogs and cats in the kennels.

"When I was able to be with the dogs, and they would go from being scared in a corner to tail wagging and me petting them through the kennel and I could see them happy; seeing them happy just completely took all my pain away," Asher recalled.

Asher began writing notes to the dogs and cats awaiting adoption or euthanasia, promising to one day provide them a home and secure future.

"These dogs had done nothing wrong. They were just unwanted," Asher said. "It was a huge eye-opener to me how many of these amazing, beautiful dogs exude love like this — that could be the best dog you could ever have — how many of them are going to be euthanized if we don't do something about it."

The realization generated a heightened level of empathy for animals and humans alike suffering from feelings of degradation, he recalled. And it sparked in him a sense of purpose and life focus.

He was suffering and could see the dogs were too. The remedy became obvious.

"If you're suffering, instead of moping around, instead of thinking how can I feel better, what can I do to feel better?, if you make other lives feel better when you are suffering, nothing will heal you faster," he said. "Nothing will make you feel better than by taking away someone's pain. Nothing."

A life-changing cross-continental RV trip for Lee Asher

Despite the bonds with shelter animals in his adolescence, by 2017 Asher was trying to make a go of a career in financial lending in Southern California. But the pull "to live this life with animals" grew too strong to ignore.

Asher sold his belongings, bought an RV and began a two-year odyssey in which he visited animal shelters with his own pack of nearly a dozen dogs.

The 24-month road trip was then followed by another three years of intermittent travel that, all told, took him to 49 mainland U.S. states and large swaths of Canada. It also attracted Animal Planet producers — and the six-episode reality show "My Pack Life" aired in 2022.

The program spotlighted Asher's effervescent, energetic and ebullient personality. But the stars were the dogs who best spoke to the mission: Adopt those loving but discarded and abandoned pets on animal death row.

One of them was a caramel-colored pit bull, Stella, whom Asher adopted the very day she was to be euthanized.

"Those 11 dogs get to go in an RV on a trip around the U.S. and Canada and then those 11 dogs inspire more people to rescue than I could ever do," he said. "This is a beautiful, beautiful story of the impact these animals have."

By the time the show's run concluded, Asher had built up a social media following in the millions. And he turned to Instagram and YouTube to air his ongoing campaign for abandoned or stranded animals.

One of those he has featured is Matilda, a pit bull with a neurological disorder that makes her wobble as she walks. Despite the condition, which has markedly improved, Matilda has found acceptance at Asher's sanctuary and is another example that imperfection is no obstacle to love or happiness.

Lee Asher's tips on adopting a shelter dog or cat

The crusader has a simple message — adopt without fear but armed with knowledge and compassion.

The vast majority of animals in shelters, Asher insists, are not traumatized, starved or suffering extreme anxiety like the ones millions of Americans glimpse in television fundraising commercials aired by worthy animal rescues.

"That's the challenge," he said. "People think if they are going to go to a shelter they're only going to see the dogs you see on TV that are psychologically and physically damaged and too much to handle."

They're not, he insists. They are "amazing" and largely "perfectly healthy, housebroken and trained" animals that were quite expensive when first sold, he said, but for a multitude of reasons, were given up.

"People have to see that this dog they are seeing in a shelter largely came from a breeder," he said. "It's not like this dog was born in a shelter. This dog was thousands of dollars at one point."

What each animal does have, he said, is a distinct personality, its own idiosyncrasies and ability to return love — and he counsels people looking for a pet to invest their time before they spend their money.

"I think when you really want a dog, let that energy calm down a little bit," he said. "There should be a conversation about a timeline about how long you're willing to search for a dog at a shelter or through rescue before calling a breeder."

Visit shelters and scour rescue teams' websites and social media accounts for at least a month or, better, 90 days, and Asher almost guarantees a prospective owner will find an animal in the breed they are looking for. Once they do, step 2 is to take time to connect with the animal.

"I cannot stress this enough," he said. "People often say when you get a rescue dog you don't know what you're getting. With all due respect, when you get any dog you don't know what you're getting. You're getting a dog, You're not getting a robot. It's not like you're getting this thing with this automatic system in place."

His method is to be silent and spend "actual quality time" with the animal by observing them, seeing what triggers them, what they love, what they avoid and what they seek out. And to build the trust that allows him to train the animal and "influence them for a positive attitude."

"I just want that dog to know I'm not going to hurt you, I'm not going to give up on you, I'm here for you no matter what," he said. "And once that dog truly understands that, that's when that beautiful bond starts to happen."

Patience and effort sometimes needed with rescued pets

There is Lucy, a scarred golden retriever that was abused and abandoned, and Rain, the Dalmatian, who initially tried to bite Asher in a sensitive spot for men, and the four French bulldogs that he fervently negotiated away from a breeder intent on selling them. And scores and scores of others.

All have since thrived in Asher's sanctuary, and whose stories he has told on social media as examples of what is possible when you "lead with love."

There are videos of the iconic "pack walks," where he is a Pied Piper followed by an array of his rescues. He brings his four-legged and online followers on journeys through the wooded Oregon properties — with their idyllic streams and waterways — and running along the sand on Pacific Northwest beaches.

Each of Asher's posts presents a short story imbued with joy and resilience and glued together by hope.

But in an interview, Asher spoke of painful "darkness" that at times he concedes envelops his life's mission. Part of it is the conflicting emotions in the rescue process itself.

Asher's videos of initial encounters with the animals are celebratory and he bubbles with excitement and sports a broad grin. Not revealed, he said, is the darker side, such as his contempt for those he knows are lying to him about their treatment of the animal they are abandoning.

"It's really difficult to just kind of stand there waiting for it to be over and be able to bring the dog to safety," he said. "It's often quite emotional and it's really sad to know that people would do that to an animal that they are claiming they love."

Most often, Asher said, a pet is given up by an owner due to some unforeseen or unavoidable life circumstance. That realization is even more painful — the separation of a family from a pet they have loved.

"I am very happy to be saving them," he said. "But often I will break down and cry shortly thereafter. I don't show that part because I don't want the owners, the people who relinquished their dogs, their pets, to me to feel even worse about it. I don't want my videos to ever stop someone from doing that."

Pain of losing them can lead to self-questioning

Also not always shown, is the "long road to recovery" for the more afflicted animals, Asher said, adding solemnly that "they don't always make it."

The worst of the darkness, he said, is the next separation — when an animal he's come to love passes away.

Arguably the most traumatic was the loss of Janey, a German shepherd, with whom Asher said he "looked forward to a long life with." Janey suffered from a neurological malady that impaired her ability to walk but was otherwise functional and thriving. One night, she awoke Asher with startling and haunting noises.

"It was very gory was she was doing. It was out of horror scene," Asher recalled sullenly how Janey was smashing her head against a wall, blood spurting from her head.

"She was making these sounds that you can't even make up, these terrible sounds," he said. "You could hear the pain but you couldn't control it. I couldn't stop her. I had to put her down then and there."

The loss of Janey, and others, fuels self-questioning but never doubt about his passion.

"I really don't know sometimes if what I'm doing is good for me. It's just complicated," he conceded. "I feel like I'm really hurting myself mentally by seeing what I love most in my life, every two months basically, die. And sometimes in a really tragic, terrible way like Janey did ... but I don't regret the life I have."

And then there was Lilly, a St. Bernard that Asher said became his "rock" — the emotional ballast that kept him level at the most painful times.

He called her "a major light" who was an always-present reminder of why he chose this path, and continues on it.

"She had such a way of bringing out the best in me, really bringing out the little kid in me, the joy in me," he said. "She would make me laugh every day."

Lilly died this past Christmas — and as with the caramel pit bull Stella, who died four years ago, the losses left gaping voids but also generated important reflection.

"That truly made me realize you don't know what's going to happen," he said. "Don't waste a second, don't waste a day. That gave me this new type of energy, this new type motivation to bring out the best of myself."

Starting with the capacity to embrace again. The very day he lost Lilly, Asher rescued another St. Bernard, a 2-month-old puppy named Ranger.

There lies Asher's axiom about his life with the pack.

"None of us is in this world forever. The question is, how much good can you do in the time you are allotted?" he said. "As I get older, I wonder how come more people are not doing this; it's just this awesome gift, to be saving dogs and cats, and saving other animals."

A Florida Asher House sanctuary on Lee Asher's bucket list, but still years away

Living in Oregon, Asher still calls Florida home and plans an Asher House sanctuary here.

"I was raised in Florida. Florida is my home, and it was so good to be home," he said in a recent interview about his late November stay. "I would love nothing more, nothing more, than to open up a sanctuary there tomorrow."

But at the moment, his focus is on the success of a third location not far from his base in the Salem region.

Asher's goal is to continue to develop his Asher House sanctuary model. Rather than a warehouse, Asher Houses are homes on expansive estates with fenced-in ranges where animals are allowed freedom of movement.

The latest location in Portland — 140 acres in size, the second-largest to-date — Asher said is a prototype for how he would roll out a national network of Asher Houses by working out key challenges.

He is learning how to best manage spin-off locations from a distance. The Portland site is run by the founders of an animal shelter that he has known and collaborated with for the past three years, a milestone in the expansion vision.

"I trust them just as much as I trust the closest person in my life," he said.

For a site in Florida, Asher said he would need equally trustworthy individuals with a track record of success and then cultivate a bond over a years-long span of time, as he did with the Oregon site.

"That would be the next step, over the next couple of years, finding some people that we really like partnering with out of Florida and that we really trust," he said.

Besides the partnership, Asher said he is "extremely grateful" for the kinship with the community of people in animal rescuing, fostering and sheltering. And for the life he has.

"My home is the sanctuary. But it's not my home because it really does belong to the animals," he said. "And it's beautiful because I get to live this life with animals."
