World Students' Day is celebrated on October 15 every year to honour former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam's contributions to the field of education. The occasion coincides with the late teacher's birth anniversary. India's 11th president – dubbed the Missile Man of India – was an eminent scientist and administrator who worked for more than four decades with the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

October 15 was designated as World Students' Day in 2010 to honour Kalam's many contributions – especially in the fields of academia and research. While many reports claim that the declaration came from the United Nations, the occasion is not celebrated beyond India.

Kalam was born in 1931 to a Tamil Muslim family living on Ramban Island – then part of the Madras Presidency. His father was a boat owner and the imam of a local mosque while his mother was a housewife. The youngest of five children, he studied at a school in Ramanathapuram before attending Saint Joseph's College in Tiruchirappalli. He went on to study aeronautical engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology.

“Over the years I had nurtured the hope to be able to fly to handle a machine as it rose higher and higher in the stratosphere was my dearest dream," he wrote in one of his memoirs – My Journey: Transforming Dreams into Actions .

But it remained a pipe dream with the late president coming in ninth out of 25 candidates. Unfortunately, there had only been eight slots available.

Kalam eventually joined the DRDO's Aeronautical Development Establishment team as a scientist in 1960. He was transferred to ISRO nine years later and helmed several important projects. He was a project director for India's first Satellite Launch Vehicle and continued working on an expandable rocket project.

APJ Abdul Kalam witnessed the country's first nuclear test, Smiling Buddha, and later directed Project Devil and Project Valiant -- efforts to develop ballistic missiles from the technology of the successful SLV programme. As the years went by, Kalam became an integral part of India's aerospace projects and defence research with the government initiating an advanced missile programme under his directorship.

Kalam was elected as President in in 2002 with support from multiple parties. He remained at the post for a single term before opting out of a re-election bid. Following his term in office Kalam had become a visiting professor for several leading institutions.

How Dr. Abdul Kalam Inspired Students through his speeches

speech on abdul kalam birthday

The Missile Man of India and the former president of the world’s largest democracy, Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, was one of the most successful and inspiring leaders of independent India. His words had the power to ignite the spark of hope even in those who had lost everything and not only this, his words are remembered across the globe by people of all backgrounds especially the youth. He gave hundreds of talks at various places in his lifetime which still stand out in all situations.

One of the best speeches of Mr. Kalam was the one he gave in the European Union in the year 2007. He emphasized on the runner, Kaniyan Poongunranar’s belief that he was a world citizen and every citizen was his own  kith and kin.  Mr. Kalam said that where there is righteousness in the heart, there is beauty in the character. Where there is beauty in the character, there is harmony in the home. When there is harmony in the home, there is order in the nation. When there is order in the nations, there is peace in the world. These heart-touching lines touched the souls of all the EU members present there.

In one of his speeches at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in 2010, he shared his experience with the 11 million young people he had come across in a decade’s time. He said that every youth wants to be unique and that is YOU. But the world around us is striving every day to make you a common person. Being like everyone else is not at all satisfying in the long run. People tend to regret that they couldn’t be unique and achieve greater heights in life. Dr Abdul Kalam envisioned before the batch of students the perspective of the ‘Evolution of the unique YOU’.

Dr Kalam always insisted the younger generation to work with their full heart towards anything that they wanted to achieve. He said that one might achieve success while having worked with half-heart but bitterness keeps breeding all the time. He is remembered by the younger generation as one of those leaders who gave them a safer and brighter India coupled with economic and social growth. He believed in the importance of a father, mother, and teacher in the nurturing of a corruption-free India as these are the people who develop the country’s future.

He taught the youth to not only handle success but also how to handle failures. He said that the management of the failure is very important as there will be problems and failures in whatever one does. According to him, learning leads to creativity, creativity leads to thinking, thinking provides knowledge and knowledge makes you successful. The ones who dare to dream the impossible are the ones who break the chains of all the human limitations. Although being from a science background, he also gave equal importance to all the courses of study and profession and he believed that one who can think and work beyond the imaginations are the ones who achieve the actual success in life. Mr. Kalam never failed to ignite hope and give motivation and strength to the young.

Here are some inspiring quotes by Dr. Kalam

  • You have to dream before your dreams can come true.
  • Excellence is a continuous process and not an accident.
  • Life is a difficult game. You can win it only by retaining your birthright to be a person.
  • Man needs his difficulties because they are necessary to enjoy success.
  • We will be remembered only if we give to our younger generation a prosperous and safe India, resulting out of economic prosperity coupled with civilizational heritage.
  • Those who cannot work with their hearts achieve but a hollow, half-hearted success that breeds bitterness all around.
  • Educationists should build the capacities of the spirit of inquiry, creativity, entrepreneurial and moral leadership among students and become their role model.
  • Look at the sky. We are not alone. The whole universe is friendly to us and conspires only to give the best to those who dream and work.
  • If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher.
  • My message, especially to young people is to have courage to think differently, courage to invent, to travel the unexplored path, courage to discover the impossible and to conquer the problems and succeed. These are great qualities that they must work towards. This is my message to the young people.

Long and Short Speech on APJ Abdul Kalam

Speech on apj abdul kalam – 1.

Respected Principal, Teachers and Dear Students!

Today is 5th September and like every year we have assembled here to celebrate the Teachers Day. I am extremely honored to have been given the opportunity to host this program. On the day of teacher’s day, I would like to talk about one of the greatest personalities who I admire a lot, Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam. I am sure everyone admires the great missile man for his notable contributions to our nation.

Dr. APJ Kalam has been a great motivation for me and his entire life journey has played a very significant role in transforming my life in a positive way.

We all know that Dr. Kalam was an Indian scientist and a benevolent politician who served India as the President from the year 2002 to 2007. His full name was Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam. Born on October 15, 1931, into a Muslim family, Dr. Kalam was a sharp student and an obedient child who helped his family in earning the livelihood. He was born in Dhanushkodi located on the southeastern coast of India. As a child, Dr. Kalam developed a great fascination with air travel by watching birds. This hobby of Kalam later developed into a mission to join aeronautics; the mission got stronger after he saw an article in the newspaper about a British fighter plane.

His father’s profession was to build and rent boats. Kalam was a very bright and hardworking student. He distributed newspapers in his locality to support his father. But he always had great interest towards studies; he was a very promising student and showed enormous likings towards science and mathematics. Dr. Kalam went to St. Joseph’s College after passing from school and attended Madras Institute of Technology to earn his degree in aeronautical engineering.

He was always a promising student and grasped as much knowledge as possible in his school and college. Dr. Kalam joined the defense department of India after completing his graduation. He was one of the prominent figures in developing India’s nuclear capabilities. He earned several accolades and respect for his contributions. Considered as the national hero for various successful tests in 1998, Kalam was given the title of ‘Missile Man’.

Dr. Kalam was also a key figure in the Pokhran-II tests launched in May 1998. A total of 5 nuclear devices were exploded in the deserts of Rajasthan in the Pokhran-II test.

Though Politics never enticed Dr. Kalam, in the year 2002, the then ruling party of India National Democratic Alliance requested him to nominate himself for the President’s post. With the support of NDA, Dr. Kalam won the election and became the 11th President of India. As a President too, Dr. Kalam lived a very simple life and motivated young students to live a successful life and serve the nation. Regarded as the President of the people, Dr. Kalam conducted over 500,000 one-to-one meetings with young students and people across the nation during his five-year Presidential term. This immense popularity of Dr. Kalam earned him the award of ‘Youth Icon’ for the year 2003 and 2006 hosted by MTV.

Dr. Kalam served India as the president for 1 term and died due to cardiac arrest on July 27, 2015. He was a visiting professor and motivational guru at several universities.

Dr. Kalam has been a legend and every person respects this great personality for his achievements, contributions and his simplicity. I appeal to every student to follow the path of Dr. Kalam and live an honorable life throughout.

Speech on APJ Abdul Kalam – 2

Dear Visitors!

Today is 15 th of October, which is the birth date of the world famous ‘Missile Man of India’ Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. He has been one of the most renowned figures at DRDO and this is why we at DRDO celebrate his birthday with much enthusiasm. The entire life journey of Dr. Kalam has been an immense inspiration for everyone and especially for the people working at DRDO.

Abdul Kalam was a renowned scientist and a well-known engineer. He also served as India’s President from the year 2002 to 2007. He was already an accomplished and much-loved individual when elected as the president in the year 2002.

Dr. Kalam had spent over four decades as a science administrator and scientist at various prestigious institutions like the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization) and ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization).

Dr. Kalam was born into a very humble South Indian family in Tamil Nadu. His father built and rented boats to fishermen working on the coast. As a child, Dr. Kalam was a highly promising student; he had an enormous fascination towards flight and later he went on studying aeronautics. He completed his degree in aerospace engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology. Though he wanted to turn into a fighter pilot but he did not qualify for the IAF (Indian Air Force).

He then joined the DRDO as a scientist and later he was transferred to the ISRO. Because of his notable contributions in the field of research and developments, he ultimately became the Chief Scientific Adviser to the then Prime Minister Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee. As a national adviser too, he played a prominent role in the world famous nuclear tests: Pokharan II.

Popularly known as the People’s President, Dr. Kalam left the presidential position after serving for one term. He later became the professor at Anna University and taught Aerospace Engineering. He was also a visiting professor and motivated numerous young students and people at several other institutions.

The entire life journey of Dr. Kalam has been a great inspiration for each one of us. He was an ardent nationalist and the world knows him by the nickname “the missile man of India”.

Though a practicing Muslim, Dr. Kalam involved himself in the broader culture of India. In his spare time, he studied Indian classical music and one of the most sacred texts of Hinduism: Bhagavad Gita.

Dr. Kalam earned several accolades as well as honorary doctorates from over 40 universities. He received the Padma Bhushan award in the year 1981, the Padma Vibhushan in the year1990 and the highest civilian award of India ‘the Bharat Ratna’ in the year 1997 for his remarkable contributions in modernizing the defense technology of India. Apart from being a great scientist and a great personality, he was an avid writer too. He wrote several books including his autobiography Wings of Fire in 1999 which is a huge motivation for the youths of India.

Dr. Kalam always lived a simple life and he was a benevolent personality. He was always passionate towards doing something recognizable for India. He created “What Can I Give Movement” in the year 2011; it was created with a purpose of developing a compassionate society.

Dr. Kalam passed away on July 27, 2015, due to massive heart attack. During his last journey too, he was delivering a lecture at the IIM (Indian Institute of Management), Shillong.

This is all I have to say about this legendary personality, who strove hard during his tenure as an Indian President to strengthen the military base of the nation and enlighten the world through his edifying intellectual and moral thoughts.

Speech on Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam – 3

Dear Students – Good Morning to all of you!

Today’s class is going to be a little different from the rest as I am not going to discuss anything from your textbooks, but would like to talk about one eminent personality who I think everyone admires and looks up to as a source of inspiration even if he is not alive. The personality that I am talking about is Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Yes students he is the one accredited with a title called The Missile Man of India and was the 11 th President of India. He was a great scientist, deep thinker and motivational speaker as well.

What makes him truly an inspirational figure for all of us is the fact that he hailed from a very humble background in a remote southern village of India called Rameswaram. It was the place where he got his first job of collecting newspaper bundles thrown from a moving train. He has shared his life experiences with everyone, especially with children and mentioned how he used to be filled with pride after recollecting those days of earning money on his own for the first time.

But even this great man, who has inspired millions of people, drew inspiration from many people who helped him in becoming what he was and of course earning the sobriquet The Missile Man of India. Let’s know about one of those personalities who shaped his personality and mentored him. Firstly, he was Iyadurai Solomon who was Kalam’s teacher and Kalam shared a great bond with him. This teacher greatly influenced Kalam’s thinking process as he gave him the mantra, “To succeed in life and achieve results, you must understand and master three mighty forces—desire, belief and expectation.”

Iyadurai Solomon was indeed a great teacher because he helped in shaping the personality of his students and finding a sense of self worth. He also told Abdul Kalam that “With faith, you can change your destiny.” From there began Kalam’s actual journey as he aspired and worked for greater things in life.

He even had this firm belief that he too can leave an impression on the society despite the fact that his parents didn’t enjoy the benefits of education. Abdul Kalam also used to get captivated by the mysteries of the sky and observe the flight of the birds from his early childhood days. Interestingly, he became the first child to fly from Rameswaram.

Many years later when Abdul Kalam visited Madurai Kamaraj University to become a part of the convocation address his most favorite teacher Rev. Iyadurai Solomon was on the dias. When he finished his lecture, Dr. Abdul Kalam bowed down in front of him and said, “Great dreams of dreamers are always transcended”.

His teacher in turn said in a choked voice, “You have not only attained my goals, Kalam, but you have eclipsed them”. Such a man was Kalam who excelled in everything that he did and made not only his teacher, but the whole nation proud. Therefore students try to follow his footsteps and sincerely work towards attaining your goals.

Speech on Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam – 4

Hello Friends – How are you all doing?

Before I begin with my speech on Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, I would like to thank each one of you for joining me in this small Endeavour to pay homage to this great personality. As proud citizens of India, we should never forget the contributions of those legendary personalities born on our land and greatly contributed towards our nation’s growth. It goes without saying that one such personality was Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, also called as The Missile Man of India.

Awarded with Bharat Ratna, the complete name of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam is Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam and he was the 11 th Indian President who served the nation from the year 2002 until 2007. He was chosen against Lakshmi Sehgal in the year 2002 and drew support from Bharatiya Janata Party as well as the Indian National Congress – the two principal Indian political parties. As we all know that by profession he was a scientist as well as an Indian administrator.

He worked with ISRO, i.e. Indian Space Research Organization and DRDO, i.e. Defence Research and Development Organization as an aerospace engineer before being elected as the 11th Indian President. What earned him the sobriquet The Missile Man of India was his development of the launch vehicle and ballistic missile technology. Besides, the Pokhran-II nuclear tests undertaken in India in the year 1998 post the actual 1974 nuclear test placed him in a pivotal political, technical and organizational role.

His frequent interactions with the community of students as well as his stirring speeches made him the youth icon. In fact, he launched a mission in the year 2011 called ‘What Can I Give Movement’, which was aimed at the Indian youth and laid stress on combating corruption in the country.

But did you know who inspired him from whom millions of people draw inspiration? Well, there were many, but If I were to mention one name that would be Dr. Vikram Sarabhai.

Dr. Vikram Sarabhai when interviewed Abdul Kalam for the position of rocket engineer was one of the first persons to have realized the hidden potential of Dr. Abdul Kalam. He realized his potential much before than Abdul Kalam himself could realize it and Sarabhai envisaged him fit into a larger canvas.

The entire interview was for Abdul Kalam as a complete moment of truth where his dream was enveloped by a bigger dream of a larger than life figure. The remaining story is about how he became the missile man of India whose passion was fiercely ignited by the great visionary scientist Dr. Vikram Sarabhai. The best part about great Abdul Kalam was that all his life he stayed grounded and never tried to attain his goals for selfish reasons rather he continued to remain active all his life till his last breath and give back mankind whatever he could.

This is all I have to say about this great and humble personality. Thank you all!

A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was a role model for the students and his life story that how a poor and deprived boy hailing from a village in Tamil Nadu , reached the highest constitutional post in India, only because of his hard work and sincerity; inspires millions of students across the globe even today.

World Students Day Date 2023

World Students Day 2023 was celebrated on Sunday, October 15th to commemorate the birth anniversary of a great leader and scientist, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

A BJP leader from Telangana state has proposed to the Government of India in June 2019 that 15th October should be observed as National student’s Day in the honour of former President and Missile man of India , Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam .

Several educational institutions in India as well as abroad observed World Students Day in their own ways. Events, competitions, speeches were organized where students discuss about the achievements and life of Dr. Kalam and his views, especially on youth and their potential.

Why the birth anniversary of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was chosen as World Students Day

A.P.J. Abdul Kalam shared a close and harmonious relationship with the students from all cultures and societies beyond the demographic lines of caste and economical divides. His own life as a student had been very challenging and filled with hardships and struggles. There was a time when he had to sell newspapers from door to door to support his family and education.

But such was his commitment towards his education that he overcame all the hardships and achieved excellence not only in academics and career; but also held the highest constitutional post in the Republic of India. A story which has inspired millions of students and will continue to do so for centuries to come.

Mr. Kalam throughout his scientific and political career considered himself as a teacher and was most pleased while addressing students; whether they belong to a school in some remote village or an esteemed college or university.

So much was his inclination towards teaching and inspiring young minds that at a time in his career he left the post of Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India; a cabinet level post, to become a teacher.

Throughout his life Mr. Kalam professed the scientific, academic as well as spiritual development of the students. He made numerous speeches and wrote many books addressing the youth; which are listened and read even today by students even across the world.

Choosing his birth day as the ‘World’s Student’s Day’ was an appropriate decision honoring his works as a scientist and the millions of youths that he inspired and still inspires through his works, achievements, speeches, lectures and books.

Achievements and Contributions to the Youth and Education

Throughout his life Mr. Kalam was conferred with around 22 awards and honors; wrote at least 18 books on youth, students, inspiration, science and technology. Some of his life’s major achievements and awards are listed below:

  • Graduated in Aerospace Engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology in 1960
  • Was the project director of India’s first satellite launch vehicle (SLV II)
  • Padma Bhushan in 1981
  • Padma Vibhushan in 1990
  • Bharat Ratna in 1997

His love for the student and the mutual trust they share is evident in the fact that post presidency he visited numerous colleges and academic institutions across India delivering lectures and inspiring students. So much strong was his love for the students that he took his last breath addressing students of Indian Institute of Management, Shillong on the topic – “Creating a livable planet earth”. Some of the universities that he was associated with, after the presidency:

  • Visiting professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong
  • Visiting professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad
  • Visiting professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Indore
  • Honorary fellow of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore
  • Chancellor of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram ( Trivandrum )
  • Professor of Aerospace Engineering at Anna University

He wrote many books addressing the youths and inspiring students- Wings of Fire, Ignited Minds, The Luminous Sparks, Inspiring Thoughts, Indomitable Spirit, You Are Born To Blossom, Turning Points: A Journey Through Challenges, My Journey, and Forge Your Future etc.

  • Wings of Fire: Inspirational
  • Ignited Minds: Dedicated to an Intermediate grade student from Gujarat- Snehal Thakkar
  • The Luminous Sparks: Poems, notes and pictures to bring out the best in youth
  • Inspiring Thoughts: Selected quotations, sayings and writings
  • Indomitable Spirit: The book has few chapters addressed to students and teachers
  • You Are Born To Blossom: Presents vision of schools in India
  • Turning Points: A Journey Through Challenges: Inspirational
  • My Journey: Inspirational
  • Forge Your Future: A message to the youths

It can be rightly said that youth and students were at the apex of every lecture that Mr. Kalam gave and every book that he wrote. Given to the love that he displayed for the students and the respect and admiration that he got back and the lives that he inspired and changed; celebrating his birthday as ‘World Student’s Day’ is the least we could do to honor him.

How Is World Students Day Celebrated

World student’s day is celebrated in schools and colleges in India as well as abroad; professing the thought and vision of Mr. Kalam towards making a progressive and sustainable society. He believed that students are the future of a nation and they can bring considerable change if well nurtured and educated. He professed education as the only weapon to fight back the demons of poverty, illiteracy, malnutrition etc. His noble thoughts are conveyed to the millions of young minds across the world to inspire them towards building a common society beyond any demographic demarcation.

Plays, speech contests, essay writing contests are organized in schools and colleges. His speeches and his famous quotes are recited to inspire the youths and make them more confident in their endeavors.

World Students Day Theme

A theme for an event celebration creates lasting memories by also instilling a social message in the minds of people. However as of now there are no themes related with the World Student’s Day celebration. It may be in the minds of many people that World Student’s Day should be celebrated with a theme which has the students and education in the center as professed by Dr. Kalam. May be in near future there may be a theme based celebration of World Student’s Day which will help to create certain awareness and gives a social message.

Conclusion:

Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was a legend in a true sense. The hardships that he faced as a child could have easily deterred any other child from the path of righteousness; instead, Mr. Kalam fought back all the adversities using hard work and education as weapons. He not only paved a way for himself and achieved academic and professional excellence; but also progressed to become the President of India.

An article on Mr. Kalam will remain incomplete if it doesn’t inform the reader about the ‘secular’ values that he followed throughout his life. Despite being a Muslim by religion; Mr. Kalam was pure vegetarian and also memorized every verse of Bhagavad Gita and had recited it many times during normal conversation.

He was simple, secular, sober looking like any other man on the street; yet even today he inspires millions towards the path of righteousness and mutual development through education and science.
