Greensprings Student Shine at Int’l Human Rights Essay Contest

Greensprings Student Shine at Int’l Human Rights Essay Contest

A student of Greensprings School, Lagos, Miss Oluwatoni Adesanya, recently, won the second prize in this year’s Kemper Human Rights Education Foundation (KHREF)’s essay competition.

The international competition received about 100 essays from 17 countries, but Adesanya’s essay titled ‘Human Rights Violations Masquerading as Covid-19 Interventions: The Nigerian Experience’, was adjudged second best, and she received the $500 prize.

Sharing her experience about writing the essay, she thanked all her English teachers who have helped in developing her composition skills.

“First of all, I want to say a big thank you to my English teachers in Greensprings School, for teaching me how to conduct proper research and hone my writing skills. I also want to thank my mother, father and aunt for their constant support.

“This winning came as a pleasant surprise to me because it was a bit difficult to write the essay at first. My inspiration came from the problems that surfaced in Nigeria during the pandemic and the looting of palliatives donated by the private sector. To do the writing, I had to carry out a research on human rights, the origin of Covid-19, and how governments across the world responded to the pandemic.

“Websites of credible international organisations such as the UN, WHO, and the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) were valuable for my research. I also read reliable Nigerian newspapers, and consulted the websites of CACOVID and human rights organisations in Nigeria,” she added.

Adesanya also stated that her essay was written to enlighten the public on how some of the country’s Covid-19 policies breached human rights, and how low-income and poor Nigerians have been badly affected by these policies. She said her aim is to call attention to the issue and hope that people in authority take appropriate actions.

The Secondary School Principal at Greensprings School, Anthony Campus, Mrs. Magdalene Okrikri, expressed satisfaction with Adesanya’s achievements, saying, “I am very proud of Oluwatoni and her achievements. She was the valedictorian of our elementary school’s class of 2020, and I am happy that she continues to perform exceptionally in everything. She has shown that all the quality education she has received from Greensprings Preschool, Elementary and now Secondary School, is paying off extremely well. I know she will win many more awards both locally and internationally.”

The Kemper Human Rights Education Foundation (KHREF) is a non-profit corporation established in 2008. It seeks to motivate students to contribute their effort towards creating a world where everyone’s human rights are realised, by sponsoring human rights essay contests and other human rights-oriented academic activities.

Student takes second prize in human rights essay competition

Student takes second prize in human rights essay competition

HOLY CROSS College was in celebratory mood this week after it emerged that a Year 14 pupil had claimed second place in a prestigious writing competition.

Liam Harte submitted an essay to the Kemper Human Rights Education Foundation (KHREF) essay competition, which invites compositions from all over the world on the subject of human rights. Liam’s work, ‘Respect for Human Rights in Many Countries’, was considered good enough to shine among thousands of other entries.

Speaking to the Chronicle about how it all came about, Liam said, “When I got the news, I was really surprised, but I couldn’t have been happier. I still can’t believe it. I had the idea just before Christmas to enter an essay writing competition, so I searched online , and I found the Kemper competition, which interested me with its human rights aspect.

“This year’s topic was ‘erosion of human rights’m which resonated with me straight away. I immediately began researching different regimes across the world, such as Russia, China, India, and some of our own western regimes for the essay. I also looked back at previous winning essays for inspiration while writing.”

He continued, “I walked into my English class with Mrs Hassan, who told me that she had received word from America that my essay had gotten second place.

“I was shocked, obviously, but delighted to have gotten third place. I think it was even more surprising because essays came in from 37 other countries. To be chosen for top three is fantastic.

“I’m very proud.”

The Kemper Human Rights Education Foundation (KHREF) is an organisation which seeks to spur the search for rules and enforcement mechanisms that will ensure everyone’s human rights are realized, sponsoring human rights essay competitions all across the globe.

Principal of Holy Cross, Mr Ciaran Johnston, gave warm congratulations to Liam, saying, “This is a great achievement given the level of international competition he faced.

“We are all delighted for Liam, and would like to congratulate him on achieving this prestigious award.”

19th Edition of Global Conference on Catalysis, Chemical Engineering & Technology

Victor Mukhin

  • Scientific Program

Victor Mukhin, Speaker at Chemical Engineering Conferences

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.

Structural analysis of types of Muslim religious consciousness

A separate theoretical and legal study should be devoted to essential features of legal consciousness of Muslims, which will be based on the study of perception of positive law through the prism of Islamic religious and legal doctrine. It is advisable to start the basis of this study with definition of its main structural element - the types of Muslim legal consciousness. Consideration of this issue from the standpoint of natural law will expand the traditional boundaries of theory of modern legal consciousness, open up additional applied and scientific horizons and, using the example of Islam, allow us to consider peculiarities of religious influence on legal consciousness of various categories of citizens. Knowledge of foundations of Muslim law, procedure for formation of moral and social religious attitudes, interpretation of religious canons and dogmas contribute to a better understanding of many processes taking place within Russian Muslim community and can form the basis of mechanism for formation of moral legal consciousness, which must be opposed, in its turn, to radical and criminalized forms of religious consciousness.
