SSC Assignment 2021

The SSC Result 2021 will be published based on the SSC Assignment, MCQ Test, and JSC Result. The Education Minister said, 2021 SSC examination will be held in the MCQ system. As well as students will be assessed based on assignments and JSC Result. Students will be assessed through group-based subjects only. That is, science group students will be evaluated through physics, chemistry, biology/ Higher mathematics, Business Studies students through Accounting, Business Entrepreneurship, Finance, and Banking and Humanities group students through History of Bangladesh and world civilization, Geography and environment, Economics/Civics and Good Governance.

MCQ test on group-based subjects will be taken for each group. Test will be taken three subject for each group. Marks will be 50 for each Subjects. Assessments will be made through assignments on group subjects as well. General subjects will also be mapped from JSC. Marks and Grade will be given from the JSC Exam Result for the Bangla, English, Math, and other Common Subjects.

SSC 2021 Assignment

The SSC 2021 assignment activities will start on 18th July. A total of 24 assignments will be given for 2021 SSC candidates. This assignment will continue for 12 weeks. Students will be given two assignments per week. Assignments will be given not on all subjects, but three group-based subjects. These assignments will be published according to the short syllabus.

No assignment will be given compulsory and fourth subjects like Bengali, English, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Agricultural Studies, General Science, Religion, and Moral Education. Results will be prepared for those subjects mapping from the JSC Result. Only three elective subjects will be evaluated by Assignment and MCQ Test.

Two assignments per week on three elective or impersonal subjects must be completed. Students will submit a total of 24 assignments. A total of eight assignments have to be done in each elective subject. Previously Published short syllabus will be completed through this assignment.

অনেক সময় ব্যাংক ঋণের বিপরীতে যে সম্পত্তি বন্ধক রাখতে হয়, তার অপ্রতুলতার কারণে ব্যাংক ঋণ উপযুক্ত সময়ে ও যথার্থ পরিমাণে পাওয়া যায় না। ফলে ব্যবসায়ীদের অর্থসংকট সমস্যা মােকাবিলা করার জন্য খুবই পরিকল্পিতভাবে অর্থের সংস্থান করতে হয় এবং সঠিক বিনিয়ােগ সিদ্ধান্তের মাধ্যমে অর্থের লাভজনক ব্যবহার প্রয়ােজন হয়।

৩) স্বল্প শিক্ষিত উদ্যোক্তা:

বাংলাদেশের বেশির ভাগ ক্ষুদ্র প্রতিষ্ঠানের উদ্যাক্তারা স্বল্পশিক্ষিত। ফলে তারা একটি দীর্ঘমেয়াদি পরিকল্পনার মাধ্যমে অর্থায়ন কার্যক্রম পরিচালনা করতে পারে না। এতে করে অনেক লাভজনক প্রতিষ্ঠান উপযুক্ত আর্থিক পরিকল্পনার অভাবে আর্থিক সংকটে সুষ্ঠভাবে চল তে পারে না এবং অবশেষে নাভের বদনে ক্ষতির সম্মুখীন হয়।

ইতিহাসের ধারণাঃ

ইংরেজী History শব্দের বাংলা প্রতিশব্দ হিসেবে এসেছে ইতিহাস শব্দটি। আর ইংরেজী History শব্দটি এসেছে গ্রিক ও ল্যাটিন Historia শব্দ থেকে। যার অর্থ হচ্ছে সত্যানুসন্ধান বা গবেষণা। ইতিহাসের জনক হিসেবে খ্যাত গ্রিসের হেরােডােটাস তার গ্রিক ও পারসিকদের মধ্যে সামরিক সংঘর্ষের ঘটনা সংবলিত গ্রন্থের নামকরণ করেন Historia (যার ইংরেজী অনুবাদ করা হয়েছে Histories)। ঘটনার অনুসন্ধান অর্থেই হেরােডােটাস Historial History শব্দটি ব্যবহার করেন। বাংলা ইতিহাস শব্দটি এসেছে ‘ইতিহ’ শব্দ থেকে যার অর্থ ঐতিহ্য। আর ইতিহাস কথাটির প্রত্যয় বিভক্তিতে দাড়ায় ইতিহ + আস যার অর্থ দাড়ায় এমনটি ছিল বা এমনটিই ঘটেছিল।

ঐতিহ্যের ধারণাঃ

ঐতিহ্য বলতে অতীত কর্মকান্ডকে বুঝায় যার অন্তর্ভুক্ত থাকে শিল্প ভাষা, সংস্কৃতি, খাদ্যভ্যাস ইত্যাদি। তাদের মধ্যে অন্যতম হলাে বাংলার সাংস্কৃতিক ঐতিহ্য। তাদের মধ্যে অন্যতম হলাে মহাস্থানগড়ের পুন্ড্রবর্ধন, সােমপুর বিহার, শালবন বিহার, বিভিন্ন মন্দির বাংলার ঐতিহ্যের পরিচয় বহন করে। এসব ঐতিহ্যের মাধ্যমে প্রাচীন বাংলার সংস্কৃতির পরিচয় ফুটে ওঠে। মুসলিম শাসনামলের প্রধান ঐতিহ্যগুলাের মধ্যে অন্যতম ছিল বিভিন্ জায়গায় নির্মিত মসজিদ। লালবাগের কেল্লা বড় কাটরা, কাটরা, আহসান মঞ্জিল প্রভৃতি মধ্যযুগের ঐতিহ্য। আর্মেনীয় গির্জা, কালিয়াটি জমিদার বাড়ি, চিনিটিকগির মসজিদ এ সময়কালের অন্যতম নিদর্শন।

ইতিহাস রচনার উপাদানঃ

১. লিখিত উপাদান: পূথিবীতে মানব সভ্যতার সাথে সম্পর্কিত অতীতকালের বিভিন্ন সত্য ঘটনা ও কর্মকাণ্ডের ধারাবাহিক লিখিত বিবরণকে ইতিহাসের লিখিত উপাদান বলা হয়। দেশি-বিদেশি সাহিত্য, দলিলপত্র, দেশি-বিদেশি পর্যটকদের বিবরণ প্রভৃতি হল ইতিহাসের লিখিত উপাদান। উদাহরণস্বরূপ- সাহিত্যের রূপকথা, কিংবদন্তি ও গল্পকাহিনি; বেদ; কৌটিল্যের

অর্থশাস্ত্র; আবুল ফজলের ‘আইন-ই-আকবরী’; সরকারি নথি ও চিঠিপত্র; খ্রিস্টীয় ৫ম থেকে ৭ম শতকে বাংলায় আগত চীনা পরিব্রাজক, যেমন- ফা হিয়েন, হিউয়েন সাং ও ইৎসিং-এর লিখিত বিবরণ প্রভৃতি। এসব লিখিত বিবরণ থেকে প্রাচীনকালের সভ্যতা, সমাজ, ধর্ম, আচার-অনুষ্ঠান, অর্থনীতি, রাজনীতি প্রভৃতি সম্পর্কে অনেক তথ্য জানা যায়।

২. অলিখিত উপাদান বা প্রচ্নতাত্ত্বিক নিদর্শন: যে সব উপাদান বা বস্তু থেকে অতীত কালের বিশেষ সময়, স্থান ও ব্যক্তি সম্পর্কে ঐতিহাসিক তথ্য পাওয়া যায়, সে সব উপাদান বা বস্তুকে ইতিহাসের অলিখিত উপাদান বা প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিক নিদর্শন বলা হয়। এসব উপাদানকে আবার ইতিহাসের বস্ত্তুগত উপাদান বা প্রত্ননিদর্শনও বলা হয়। মূলত প্রত্ননিদর্শনগুলােই হল ইতিহাসের অলিখিত উপাদান। উদাহরণস্বরূপ- প্রাচীনকালের তৈজসপত্র, শিলালিপি, তাম্রলিপি, শিলালিপি, ধাতব মুদ্রা, স্থাপত্যিক নিদর্শন বা ইমারত প্রভৃতি।

এসব প্রত্ননিদর্শনের বৈজ্ঞানিক পরীক্ষা-নিরীক্ষা ও বিশ্লেষণ করে প্রাচীনকালের অধিবাসীদের সভ্যতা, ধর্ম, জীবনযাত্রা, রাজনীতি, অর্থনীতি, নগরায়ণ, নিত্যব্যবহার্য জিনিসপত্র, কুষি উপকরণ প্রভৃতি সম্পর্কে ধারণা পাওয়া যায় বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন প্রাচীন সভ্যতাসহ ভারত উপমহাদেশের সিদ্ধু সভ্যতা এবং বাংলাদেশের বগুড়া। জেলার মহাস্থানগড় (প্রাচীন পুণ্ডনগর), নওগাঁ জেলার পাহাড়পুর মহাবিহার, কুমিল্লা জেলার শালবন বিহার প্রভৃতি প্রত্ননিদর্শন ইতিহাসের অলিখিত উপাদান হিসেবে উল্লেখ করা যায়। এরূপ প্রত্ননিদর্শনের আবিষ্কারের ফলে যে কোন জাতির ইতিহাসও বদলে যেতে পারে। যেমন- সম্প্রতি বাংলাদেশের নরসিংদী জেলার উয়ারী-বটেশ্বরের প্রত্ননিদর্শনের আবিষ্কার প্রমাণিত হয়েছে যে, বাংলাদেশে প্রায় ২৫০০ বছর আগেও উন্নত নগর সভ্যতা গড়ে উঠেছিল।

ইতিহাসের গুরুত্বঃ

আঞ্চলিক বা স্থানীয় ইতিহাস বিভিন্ন দিক থেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। যেমন-

(১) প্রামাণ্য ইতিহাসে সব জায়গার পরিচিতি থাকে না। গুরুত্ব বেশি না থাকলে বা বিশেষ উল্লেখযােগ্য ঘটনা না ঘটলে সেই স্থানের বিবরণ থাকে না। সেই ক্ষেত্রে স্থানীয় ইতিহাস এই অভাব পূরণ করে।

(২) জাতীয় স্তরের ইতিহাস রচনার সময়ে অনেক ক্ষেত্রে স্থানীয় ইতিহাসকে উপাদান হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা হয়।

(৩) স্থানীয় ইতিহাস, স্থানীয় ঐতিহ্য, সংস্কৃতির অতীত থেকে বর্তমান পর্যন্ত চালচিত্র তুলে ধরে।

(৪) স্থানীয় ইতিহাস সেই অঞ্লের রাজনৈতিক উৎ্থানপতনের দীর্ঘ কাহিনির পরিচয় দেয়। স্থানীয় ইতিহাসের মাধ্যমে সেই স্থানের জনগােষ্ঠীর ইতিহাস সম্পর্কে জানা যায়।

ইতিহাস পাঠের প্রয়ােজনীয়তাঃ

ইতিহাস পাঠের মাধ্যমে আমরা মানব সমাজের শুরু থেকে তার যাবতীয় কর্মকান্ড, চিন্তা-চেতনা ও জীবনযাত্রার অগ্রগতি সম্পর্কে জ্ঞান লাভ করতে পারি। কেননা ইতিহাসের প্রধান উপজীব্য বিষয় হল মানব সমাজের অগ্রগতির ধারা বর্ণনা। সভ্যতার প্রধান প্রধান স্তর, সভ্যতার সামাজিক, রাজনৈতিক, অর্থনৈতিক ও সাংস্কৃতিক বিবর্তনের কথা সম্পর্কে ইতিহাস থেকে জানা যায়। ইতিহাস আমাদের জাতির পথ স্বরুপ। অতীতের ইতিহাস আমাদের আগামীর পথ চলতে সাহায্য করে। ইতিহাস রচনা ও ইতিহাস চর্চা সম্পর্কে বিভিন্ন দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি থাকতে পারে, কিন্তু ইতিহাসের প্রয়ােজনীয়তা সম্পর্কে কোন দ্বিমত নেই। রাষ্ট্রনায়ক, রাজনীতিবিদ, বুদ্ধিজীবী, সামরিক ব্যক্তিবর্গ ও প্রশাসকসহ সমাজের সর্বস্তরের মানুষের নিকট ইতিহাস খুবই মূল্যবান বিষয়।

ঐতিহাসিক ঘটনার সঠিক আলােচনার জন্য বর্তমানে বিভিন্ন জ্ঞানের শাখার সাহায্য গ্রহণ করা হয়। ফলে ইতিহাস হয়ে ওঠে বস্তুনিষ্ঠ ও নিরপেক্ষ। ইতিহাস একটি জাতির ঐতিহ্য ও সাংস্কৃতিক মূল্যকে যথাযথভাবে সংরক্ষণ করে। সমাজ ও জাতির অগ্রগতির কাঙ্খিত লক্ষ্যে পৌছতে ইতিহাস জ্ঞানসহায়ক শক্তি হিসেবে কাজ করে। ইতিহাস পাঠ চেতনাবােধ জাগ্রত করে মানুষকে অনুপ্রাণিত করে। আজ আত্মপরিচয়ের সংকটের লগ্নে ইতিহাস পাঠ আমাদের জাতীয় দায়িত্ব। কেননা ইতিহাস জ্ঞান আমাদের গর্বিত করে তােলে।

এই ব্যবস্থায় উৎপাদনের উপাদানগুলাে ব্যক্তিমালিকানাধীন এবং প্রধানত বেসরকারি উদ্যোগে সরকারি হস্তক্ষেপ ছাড়া স্বয়ংক্রিয় দামব্যবস্থার মাধ্যমে যাবতীয় অর্থনৈতিক কার্যক্রম পরিচালিত হয়। এ ধরনের অর্থব্যবস্থাকে ধনতান্ত্রিক বা পুঁজিবাদী অর্থব্যবস্থা বলে। অষ্টাদশ শতাব্দীর শেষভাগে ফরাসি বিপ্লবের মধ্য দিয়ে সমগ্র ইউরােপে ধনতান্ত্রিক অর্থনীতির সূত্রপাত ঘটে।

খ) সমাজতান্ত্রিক অর্থনীতি বা নির্দেশমূলক অর্থনীতি (Socialistic or Command Economy):

সমাজতানত্রিক অর্থনীতিতে সমাজের অধিকাংশ সম্পদ ও উৎপাদনের উপাদানের উপর রাষ্ট্রের বা সমাজের মালিকানা প্রতিষ্ঠিত থাকে। অধিকাংশ শিল্প-কারখানা ও উৎপাদন প্রতিষ্ঠানের মালিক সরকার বা সমাজ এবং সেগুলাে সরকারি বা সামাজিক নির্দেশে পরিচালিिত হয়ে থাকে। কোন কোন দ্রবয, কী পরিমাণে, কীভাবে এবং কার জন্য উৎপাদিত হবে তা সরকার বা রাষ্ট্র নির্ধারণ করে।

গ) মিশ্র অর্থব্যবস্থা:

যে অর্থব্যবস্থায় ব্যক্তি মালিকানা ও বেসরকারি উদ্যোগের পাশাপাশি সরকারি উদ্যোগ ও সামাজিক নিয়ন্ত্রণ বিরাজ করে তাকে মিশ্র অর্থব্যবস্থা বলে। অর্থাৎ এ অর্থব্যবস্থায় ব্যক্তিগত ও সরকারি উদ্যোগ সম্মিলিত ভূমিকা পালন করে। পৃথিবীর অধিকাংশ দেশে মিশ্র অর্থব্যবস্থা বিদ্যমান। যথা-যুক্তরাষ্ট্র, যুক্তরাজ্য, জার্মানি, বাংলাদেশ ও ডারত ইত্যাদি।

ঘ) ইসলামী অর্থব্যবস্থা:

ইসলামের মৌলিক নিয়ম-কানুনের উপর বিশ্বাসকে ভিত্তি করে গড়ে ওঠা অর্থব্যবস্থাকে ইসলামি অর্থব্যবস্থা বলা হয়।

মিশ্র অর্থ ব্যবস্থা এর বৈশিষ্ট্যঃ

ক) সম্পদের ব্যক্তিগত, সমবায় ও সরকারি মালিকানাঃ

মিশ্র অর্থব্যবস্থায় ব্যক্তি তার স্থাবর ও অস্থাবর সম্পত্তি অবাধে ভােগ করতে পারে ও ক্রয়-বিক্রয় করতে পারে। পাশাপাশি গণদ্রব্য (মহাসড়ক) ও সেবা (স্বাস্থ্যসেবা) উৎপাদনকারী প্রতিষ্ঠানসমূহ প্রধানত সরকার পরিচালনা করে।

খ) ব্যক্তিগত উদ্যোগঃ

বাটন ও ভােগসহ অধিকাংশ অর্থনৈতিক মিশ্র অর্থনীতিতে ব্যবসা-বাণিজ্য, কার্যাবলি ব্যক্তিগত উদ্যোগে সংগঠিত ও পরিচালিত হয়।

গ) সরকারি উদ্যোগঃ

মিশ্র অর্থনীতিতে ব্যক্তি উদ্যোগের পাশাপাশি সরকারি উদ্যোগ গ্রহণ করা হয়। দেশের যৌলিক ও ডারী শিল্প, জাতীয় নিরাপত্তা ও জনগুরুত্বপূর্ণ প্রতিষ্ঠানসমূহ সরকার পরিচালনা করে থাকে।

ঘ) মুনাফা অর্জনঃ

মিশ্র অর্থনীতিতে বেসরকারি খাতে অর্থনৈতিক কার্যক্রম পরিচালনা মুনাফা অর্জন করা সह্তব হয়। তবে তা অতিরিক্ত একচেটিয়া মুনাফা নয়।

ও) আয় বৈষম্যঃ

মিশ্র অর্থনৈতিক ব্যবস্থায় আয় বৈষম্য প্রকট আকার ধারণ করে।

চ) ভােক্তার স্বাধীনতাঃ

এ ব্যবস্থায় ভােক্তা সাধারণ দ্রব্য ক্রয়-বিক্রয় ও ভােগের ক্ষেত্রে অবাধ স্বাধীনতা ভােগ করে। তব সরকার প্রয়ােজন মনে করলে দ্রব্যের দামের উপর প্রভাব বিস্তার করতে পারে এবং প্রয়ােজন অনুসারে কোনাে দ্রব্যের উৎপাদন নিয়ন্ত্রণ করতে পারে। যেমন- ধূমপান, মাদকদ্রব্য উৎপাদন ও ভােগ ইত্যাদি।

ছ) যৌথ বিনিয়ােগঃ

মিশ্র অর্থব্যবস্থায় কোন সম্পদ উৎপাদনের ক্ষেত্রে যৌথভাবে বিনিয়ােগ করা সম্ভব হয়। বেসরকারি (এনজিও) এবং সরকারি উদ্যোগ পাশাপাশি বিরাজ করায় যৌথভাবে বিনিয়ােগ করা সম্ভব হয়। বিভিন্ন অর্থনৈতিক ব্যবস্থার তুলনামূলক সুবিধা ও

ধনতান্ত্রিক অর্থব্যবস্থায় প্রত্যেক ভােক্তা তার নিজস্ব পছন্দ, ইচ্ছা ওরুচি অনুযায়ী অবাধে দ্রব্য ক্রয় ও ভােগ করতে পারে। অর্থাৎ পূর্ণ স্বাধীনতা বিরাজ করে। কিন্তু সমাজতান্ত্রিক অর্থব্যবস্থায় অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রে ভােক্তারা সরকার ও কেন্দ্রীয় পরিকল্পনা নির্ধারিত উৎপাদিত দ্রব্যাদি ভােগ করে থাকে। কোনাে ডােক্তা ইচ্ছাকৃত অর্থ ব্যয় করে বাজারকে প্রভাবিত করে কোনাে কিছু উৎপাদন ও ভাগ করতে পারে না। আবারমিশ্র অর্থব্যবস্থা ডােত্তা সাধারণত দ্রব্য ক্রয়-বিক্রয় ও ভােগের ক্ষেত্রে অবাধ স্বাধীনতা ভােগ করে। তবে সরকার প্রয়ােজন মনে করলে দ্রব্যের দামের উপর প্রভাব বিস্তার করতে পারে এবং প্রয়ােজন অনুসারে কোনাে দ্রব্যের উৎপাদন নিয়ন্ত্রণ করতে পারে।

খ) সম্পদের মালিকানা ক্ষেত্রে

সম্পদ বা উৎপাদনের উপকরণগুলাে ব্কতিমালিকানায় থাকে। ভোগ করে খাকে। সমাজতানত্রিক অর্থনীতিতে অধিকাংশ সম্পদ (জমি, কলকারখানা, খুনি ইত্যাদি) ও উৎপাদনের উপামানগুলাের মালিক হলাে সরকার, সমবায় প্রতিষ্ঠান, যৌথ সামাজিক দল ইত্যামি। আবার মিশ্র অর্থনৈতিক ব্যবস্থায় ব্যত্তি তার স্থাবর ও অশ্বাবর সম্পতি অবাধে ভােগ করতে পারে ও ক্রয়-বিক্রয় করতে পারে। পাশাপাশি গণদ্রব্য (মহাসড়ক) ও সেবা (স্বাস্থ্যসেবা) উৎপাদনকারী প্রতিষ্ঠানসমূহ প্রধানত সরকার পরিচালনা করে।

গ) প্রতিযােগিতার ক্ষেত্রে।

সমাজতান্ত্রিক অর্থব্যবস্থায় অবাধ অভাব রয়েছে। কারণ, অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রে সরকারি উদ্যোগে উৎপাদন পরিচালিত হওয়ায় সেখানে বহুসংখ্যক বেসরকারি উদ্যোক্তার অবাধ প্রতিযােগিতা থাকে। কিন্তু ধনতান্ত্রিক অর্থব্যবস্থায় দ্রব্য ও সেবা উৎপাদনে প্রথমে অনেক ফার্ম অবাধে প্রতিযােগিতা করে। ফলে তখন দ্রব্যের দাম কম থাকে এবং নতুন নতুন আবিষ্কার সম্ভব হয়।

ঘ) মুনাফা অর্জনের ক্ষেত্রেঃ

ধনতান্ত্রিক অর্থব্যবস্থায় উৎপাদক সর্বোচ্চ মুনাফা অর্জনের জন্য উৎপাদন করে। মিশ্র কার্যক্রম পরিচালনা করার মাধ্যমে মুনাফা অর্জন করা সম্ভব হয় তবে তা অতিরিক্ত একচেটিয়া মুনাফা নয়। আর সমাজতান্ত্রিক অর্থব্যবস্থায় উৎপাদন করা হয় সকল জনগণের মঙ্গলের কথা চিন্তা করে। যে অর্থনৈতিক ব্যবস্থা টি ভালাে তার স্বপক্ষে যুক্তি উপস্থাপন করা হলােঃ

মিশ্র অর্থনৈতিক ব্যবস্থা হচ্ছে সর্বাপেক্ষা উৎকৃষ্ট অর্থ ব্যবস্থা। কারণ, এ অর্থব্যবস্থায় ব্যক্তিমালিকানা ও বেসরকারি উদ্যোগের পাশাপাশি সরকারি উদ্যোগের মাধ্যমে সম্মিলিতভাবে উৎপাদন কার্যক্রম সম্পন্ন করা হয়। বিশ্বে কোথাও বিশুদ্ধ ধনতন্ত্র বা বিশুদ্ধ সমাজন্ত্র নেই। তাই অনেকে মিশ্র অর্থব্যবস্থাকে একটি উন্নত অর্থব্যবস্থা বলে মনে করেন। বিশ্বের অধিকাংশ দেশে মিশ্র অর্থব্যবস্থা বিদ্যমান রয়েছে।

The middle class, once the economic stratum of a clear majority of American adults, has steadily contracted in the past five decades. The share of adults who live in middle-class households fell from 61% in 1971 to 50% in 2021, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of government data.

The shrinking of the middle class has been accompanied by an increase in the share of adults in the upper-income tier – from 14% in 1971 to 21% in 2021 – as well as an increase in the share who are in the lower-income tier, from 25% to 29%. These changes have occurred gradually, as the share of adults in the middle class decreased in each decade from 1971 to 2011, but then held steady through 2021.

The analysis below presents seven facts about how the economic status of the U.S. middle class and that of America’s major demographic groups have changed since 1971. A related analysis examines the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the financial well-being of households in the lower-, middle- and upper-income tiers, with comparisons to the Great Recession era. (In the source data for both analyses, demographic figures refer to the 1971-2021 period, while income figures refer to the 1970-2020 period. Thus, the shares of adults in an income tier are based on their household incomes in the previous year.)

This report analyzes data from the Annual Social and Economic Supplements (ASEC) of the Current Population Survey (CPS) to study how the economic status of the American middle class has changed since 1971. It also examines the movement of demographic groups in and out of the American middle class and across lower- and upper-income tiers from 1971 to 2021.

The CPS is the U.S. government’s official source for monthly estimates of unemployment ; the ASEC, conducted in March each year, is the official source for its estimates of income and poverty . The COVID-19 outbreak has affected data collection efforts by the U.S. government in its surveys, limiting in-person data collection and affecting the response rate. It is possible that some measures of economic outcomes and how they vary across demographic groups are affected by these changes in data collection. This report makes use of updated weights released by the Census Bureau to correct for nonresponse in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

In this analysis, “middle-income” adults in 2021 are those with an annual household income that was two-thirds to double the national median income in 2020, after incomes have been adjusted for household size, or about $52,000 to $156,000 annually in 2020 dollars for a household of three. “Lower-income” adults have household incomes less than $52,000 and “upper-income” adults have household incomes greater than $156,000.

The income it takes to be middle income varies by household size, with smaller households requiring less to support the same lifestyle as larger households. The boundaries of the income tiers also vary across years with changes in the national median income. Read the methodology for more details.

The terms “middle income” and “middle class” are used interchangeably in this analysis for the sake of exposition. But being middle class can refer to more than just income, be it the level of education, the type of profession, economic security, home ownership, or one’s social and political values. Class also could simply be a matter of self-identification.

Household incomes have risen considerably since 1970, but those of middle-class households have not climbed nearly as much as those of upper-income households. The median income of middle-class households in 2020 was 50% greater than in 1970 ($90,131 vs. $59,934), as measured in 2020 dollars. These gains were realized slowly, but for the most part steadily, with the exception of the period from 2000 to 2010, the so-called “ lost decade ,” when incomes fell across the board.

The median income for lower-income households grew more slowly than that of middle-class households, increasing from $20,604 in 1970 to $29,963 in 2020, or 45%.

The rise in income from 1970 to 2020 was steepest for upper-income households. Their median income increased 69% during that timespan, from $130,008 to $219,572.

As a result of these changes, the gap in the incomes of upper-income and other households also increased. In 2020, the median income of upper-income households was 7.3 times that of lower-income households, up from 6.3 in 1970. The median income of upper-income households was 2.4 times that of middle-income households in 2020, up from 2.2 in 1970.

The share of aggregate U.S. household income held by the middle class has fallen steadily since 1970. The widening of the income gap and the shrinking of the middle class has led to a steady decrease in the share of U.S. aggregate income held by middle-class households. In 1970, adults in middle-income households accounted for 62% of aggregate income, a share that fell to 42% in 2020.

Meanwhile, the share of aggregate income accounted for by upper-income households has increased steadily, from 29% in 1970 to 50% in 2020. Part of this increase reflects the rising share of adults who are in the upper-income tier.

The share of U.S. aggregate income held by lower-income households edged down from 10% to 8% over these five decades, even though the proportion of adults living in lower-income households increased over this period.

Older Americans and Black adults made the greatest progress up the income ladder from 1971 to 2021. Among adults overall, the share who were in the upper-income tier increased from 14% in 1971 to 21% in 2021, or by 7 percentage points. Meanwhile, the share in the lower-income tier increased from 25% to 29%, or by 4 points. On balance, this represented a net gain of 3 percentage points in income status for all adults.

Those ages 65 and older made the most notable progress up the income ladder from 1971 to 2021. They increased their share in the upper-income tier while reducing their share in the lower-income tier, resulting in a net gain of 25 points. Progress among adults 65 and older was likely driven by an increase in labor force participation , rising educational levels and by the role of Social Security payments in reducing poverty.

Black adults, as well as married men and women, were also among the biggest gainers from 1971 to 2021, with net increases ranging from 12 to 14 percentage points.

On the other hand, not having at least a bachelor’s degree resulted in a notable degree of economic regression over this period. Adults with a high school diploma or less education, as well as those with some college experience but no degree, saw sizable increases in their shares in the lower-income tier in the past five decades. Although no single group of adults by education category moved up the income ladder from 1971 to 2021, adults overall realized gains by boosting their education levels . The share of adults 25 and older who had completed at least four years of college stood at 38% in 2021, compared with only 11% in 1971.

Progress up the income ladder for a demographic group does not necessarily signal its economic status in comparison with other groups at a given point in time. For example, in 2021, adults ages 65 and older and Black adults were still more likely than many other groups to be lower income, and less likely to be middle or upper income.

Married adults and those in multi-earner households made more progress up the income ladder from 1971 to 2021 than their immediate counterparts. Generally, partnered adults have better outcomes on a range of economic outcomes than the unpartnered. One reason is that marriage is increasingly linked to educational attainment , which bears fruit in terms of higher incomes.

Married men and women were distributed across the income tiers identically to each other in both 1971 and 2021. Both groups nearly doubled their shares in the upper-income tier in the past five decades, from 14% in 1971 to 27% in 2021. And neither group experienced an increase in the share in the lower-income tier.

Unmarried men and women were much more likely than their married counterparts to be in the lower-income tier in 2021. And unmarried men, in particular, experienced a sizable increase in their share in the lower-income tier from 1971 t0 2021 and a similarly large decrease in their share in the middle-income tier. Nonetheless, unmarried men are less likely than unmarried women to be lower income and more likely to be middle income.

Adults in households with more than one earner fare much better economically than adults in households with only one earner. In 2021, some 20% of adults in multi-earner households were in the lower-income tier, compared with 53% of adults in single-earner households. Also, adults in multi-earner households were more than twice as likely as adults in single-earner households to be in the upper-income tier in 2021. In the long haul, adults in single-earner households are among the groups who slid down the income ladder the most from 1971 to 2021.

Despite progress, Black and Hispanic adults trail behind other groups in their economic status. Although Black adults made some of the biggest strides up the income tiers from 1971 to 2021, they, along with Hispanic adults, are more likely to be in the lower-income tier than are White or Asian adults. About 40% of both Black and Hispanic adults were lower income in 2021, compared with 24% of White adults and 22% of Asian adults.

Black adults are the only major racial and ethnic group that did not experience a decrease in its middle-class share, which stood at 47% in 2021, about the same as in 1971. White adults are the only group in which more than half (52%) lived in middle-class households in 2021, albeit after declining from 63% in 1971. At the top end, only about one-in-ten Black and Hispanic adults were upper income in 2021, compared with one-in-four or more White and Asian adults.

The relative economic status of men and women has changed little from 1971 to 2021. Both experienced similar percentage point increases in the shares in the lower- and upper-income tiers, and both saw double-digit decreases in the shares who are middle class. Women remained more likely than men to live in lower-income households in 2021 (31% vs. 26%).

Adults 65 and older continue to lag economically, despite decades of progress. The share of adults ages 65 and older in the lower-income tier fell from 54% in 1971 to 37% in 2021. Their share in the middle class rose from 39% to 47% and their share in the upper-income tier increased from 7% to 16%. However, adults 65 and older are the only age group in which more than one-in-three adults are in lower-income households, and they are much less likely than adults ages 30 to 44 – as well as those ages 45 to 64 – to be in the upper-income tier.

All other age groups experienced an increase in the shares who are lower income from 1971 to 2021, as well as a decrease in the shares who are middle income. But they also saw increases in the shares who are upper income. Among adults ages 30 to 44, for instance, the share in upper-income households almost doubled, from 12% in 1971 to 21% in 2021.

There is a sizable and growing income gap between adults with a bachelor’s degree and those with lower levels of education. In 2021, about four-in-ten adults with at least a bachelor’s degree (39%) were in the upper-income tier, compared with 16% or less among those without a bachelor’s degree. The share of adults in the upper-income tier with at least a bachelor’s degree edged up from 1971 to 2021, while the share without a bachelor’s degree either edged down or held constant.

About half or a little more of adults with either some college education or a high school diploma only were in the middle class in 2021. But these two groups, along with those with less than a high school education, experienced notable drops in their middle class shares from 1971 to 2021 – and notable increases in the shares in the lower-income tier. In 2021, about four-in-ten adults with only a high school diploma or its equivalent (39%) were in the lower-income tier, about double the share in 1971.

Interview: Ten Minutes with CSKA Moscow dance team captain Anna Burkina

As unabashed admirers of the glamorous ladies of the CSKA Moscow dance team, BallinEurope thought it might be a good idea to briefly chat with one of the Red Army’s prettier side – ‘cuz, you know, we’re professionals with a website here…

Former world-class rhythmic gymnast for Russia, team captain and six-year CSKA Moscow veteran Anna Burkina, took ten minutes of out her preseason schedule to talk with BallinEurope about training, the team’s greatest aspiration, and her own sort of devotion. And oh yes, lots of pictures are included.

What is your training in dance and what have you done professionally? I was in rhythmic gymnastics for 15 years, became a world champion, then finished my sports career and went to dance for CSKA.

The CSKA Moscow dance team is known worldwide and is certainly one of the most popular teams anywhere. Do you feel that you have a great reputation to uphold when you are performing? Surely, it’s a big pressure, big responsibility. And a lot of work: Every dance has its own idea – to support the team, to put the pressure on the opponents, to make the fans cheer. You should give your heart out to every dance.

Do you, like lots of the players themselves, have a goal of performing in the USA or elsewhere in Europe? Of course, it’s one of our goals. I mean we would like to perform abroad one day; last year, we visited the USA and Canada to watch NBA cheerleaders, to gain some new ideas, experience. But our biggest dream is to perform during Olympic Games.

How long do you want/expect to be with the team? As long as I can. That’s my life, I like my work very much; it’s my number one priority.

Do the CSKA Moscow cheerleaders have “groupies”? Do you get fan mail? Yes, sure. I think every dance team has its fans. Ours have created a number of communities on Vkontakte.ru [a Russian version of Facebook]. They send us questions and we answer.

Finally, are you a basketball fan? Have you always been? I was more of gymnastics fan for most of my life – you understand, why. But later I fell in love with basketball and now I watch all the games available – in the Russian league, Euroleague, and the NBA.

What, you ask, has Marcia Dare been up to these last 40 years? Well, here's a not-so-brief synopsis:

She foolishly got married at 18 (big, big, BIG mistake), wisely got divorced at 21, and then finally went to college while living with her sister who was teaching at WSU. After completing her student teaching assignment in Richland, she high-tailed it to Seattle to hook up with a friend who had promised to travel to Europe on $10 a day with her. Alas, the fickle friend had found a job instead. Too cowardly to travel alone, Marcia decided to look for a job, too. Rather than seeking a teaching position in November, she landed a totally fun secretarial job at KOMO-TV, the ABC affiliate in Seattle. In 11 years, she worked her way from Sales Secretary to Regional Sales Manager before a corporate re-shuffle eliminated that position, and she found herself unemployed. (Yikes! Don't you just hate corporate politics?)

Anyway, she and her swell beau Larry decided to marry in 1983. In l987 (on Valentine's Day, no less), she gave birth to their one and only child, a lovely daughter named Lauren Camille Asher, now 17 and entering her senior year of high school.

Marcia has been fortunate to be able to be a stay-at-home mom during Lauren's formative years, while subbing in the school district on occasion. The title she most cherishes (besides "Mom," of course) is "Committed Volunteer." She is currently the Concessions Queen of MIHS, where the volleyball games are known for their gourmet fare. She is also the co-director of a private volleyball club that fields five junior teams. Every spring she hosts the Annual First Hill Easter Egg Hunt that attracts around 250 kids and parents eager to get at the 5,000 pieces of candy and 200 prize eggs. During Summer Celebration on Mercer Island, she helps put on a Junior Art Show which showcases the art of kids from K-12.

2004 has brought her a new role to play-that of caretaker to an elderly parent. Her 89-year-old mom is currently recovering from two traumatic falls, two hospitalizations, two surgeries, and two nursing home stints. Marcia is trying to move her from San Diego to Seattle, but the process is slow because the healing is slow.

While many of her classmates are doting grandparents looking forward to retirement, Marcia now needs to find a job because sending a kid to college is too darned expensive these days!

She is really looking forward to catching up with her classmates' lives and eagerly welcomes any advice on handling teenaged girls, chronologically-challenged parental units, and surviving the empty-nest syndrome.

2024 NFL Draft closes chapter for COVID-wrecked 2021 recruiting class defined by visit bans, canceled season

For better or worse, the class of 2021 finally gets the (in-person) stage it deserves.

The 2024 NFL Draft  is the first draft for players in the 2021 recruiting class. Their senior seasons of high school football were either seriously impacted or canceled in response to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Many of them were never able to visit the college school of their choice during the recruiting process until they enrolled during the summer of 2021. 

Several of the top recruits in the 2021 class will hear Roger Goodell call their names during the first round Thursday night. More will come off the board Friday and Saturday. Most will return to college classes Monday, several at different schools from where they signed.

So tells the curious tale of the class of 2021.

In the hours after the United States began its shutdown on the heels of the spreading coronavirus, the NCAA on March 13, 2020 tweeted a ban on in-person recruiting . Speaking strictly in sports, a pandemic that wiped out nearly everything in its path in 2020 had an impact on recruiting and roster construction that is still being felt across college football .

"Recruiting the 2021 class was unlike anything else," said an assistant coach who was at a Power Five school in 2020. "Most of it was purely off of film. Being able to see body types, growth potential and get accurate and recent movement information was damn near impossible. We had to rely a ton on evaluations from people that were not in the building. It was so much harder to find 'sleepers,' and a lot of guys were overvalued because of the inability to actually see their development in a normal evaluation period."

Player rankings from 2021 Class

The two players who finished the cycle ranked Nos. 1-2, Quinn Ewers and J.T. Tuimoloau, each returned to college for the 2024 season, smartly pushing back their draft potentials for a year; they'll be projected as first-round picks next April but probably would not have reached those heights Thursday night. 

Ewers reclassified from the 2022 class. His journey is well-documented. Tuimoloau announced for Ohio State less than a month before practice started, on July 4, 2021 — months after his classmates made their February decisions. He'll enter his third year as a starter for the Buckeyes.

One July 4 earlier, with the country on lockdown, Caleb Williams announced he was headed to play for Oklahoma . A fireworks show followed his commitment, which was televised live on CBSSports HQ.

Williams would be the No. 1 quarterback in the final 2021 rankings … until Ewers' reclassification moved him up. Williams will be the first name called by Goodell on Thursday evening. 

You could have a lot of fun pulling up the final rankings for the class of 2021 and toggling around by position. 

How recruiting worked (or didn't work) in 2020

First, that second tweet from the NCAA on March 13, 2020 said that there would be a ban on in-person recruiting.

At first, it was indefinite.

That ban would continue to be extended for months at a time, preventing coaches from getting on the road during the traditional spring evaluation period that begins on April 15.

It kept coaches from hosting unofficial visitors throughout the spring (except for Arizona State , which is a whole 'other story) and official visits in April-June.

It wiped out camps, of both the college campus and showcase variety. Not beholden to the NCAA, the Elite 11 was able to do a socially distanced competition in the heart of Tennessee in July. Caleb Williams won MVP. 

Response to the coronavirus of course postponed the season in many states, canceled it in some others and led for many 2021 recruits to even opt out of playing their 2020 senior seasons. 

The NCAA did not reopen campus visits until June of 2021. 

It had an enormous impact on the evaluation process — no in-person evals, no verified heights, weights and measurements plus testing times. But we won't soon forget the videos and pictures of scales and measuring tapes, sometimes a couple inches below the ground to make a player appear taller. 

If you find yourself wondering why so many 2021 signees did not live up to "expectations," now you have your answer. What seems like an abnormally high number won't hear their names called this weekend, next year or ever.

Position-by-position rundown of 2021's hits, misses

• After Williams, two of the quarterbacks expected to go in the early stages were in the class of 2021. Drake Maye was the No. 4 quarterback and a five-star. National champion JJ McCarthy was the No. 6 overall quarterback in that class.
• The quarterback ranked No. 3, between Williams and Maye? Record-setting quarterback Sam Huard , who followed his father and uncle's footsteps and went to hometown Washington , started a disastrous 2021 Apple Cup as a true freshman with an interim coach at the helm, then was beat out the following spring by incoming transfer Michael Penix Jr . Huard eventually transferred to FCS Cal Poly to play for his former high school coach.
• The first receiver expected to hear his name called is Marvin Harrison Jr. , an All-American Bowl selection. Harrison was the No. 21 receiver in that class (and the third receiver in Ohio State's class that year), while the second receiver expected to hear his name, Malik Nabers , was the No. 19 receiver nationally. Frankly, Harrison Jr. exceeded Ohio State's expectations. A lack of quality testing times kept Harrison from being ranked higher than he should have been. 
• The No. 1 receiver in that class — the one who Buckeyes fans were really excited about — was Emeka Egbuka , who will return in 2024 and projects as a first-rounder next year.
• Another LSU receiver, Brian Thomas Jr. , is a projected first-rounder, and he was the No. 9 receiver in that class, No. 69 overall.
• And the fastest player in NFL combine history, Xavier Worthy , was a top-100 player and the No. 13 receiver overall.
• A miss was Adonai Mitchell . The former Texas and Georgia touchdown machine will be one of the top receivers off the board. He was a three-star prospect, ranking as the No. 60 receiver in that class, a victim of lack of verifieds and in-person evaluations. As a transfer, the 247Sports team did consider Mitchell to be a five-star prospect, so at least there's that. 
• No running back is expected to go in the first round on Thursday, though the No. 1 running back in 2021, TreVeyon Henderson, returned to Ohio State for the 2024 season and is already projected as a first-rounder next year.
• Tight end was a hit. A long fight was had over who should be the No. 1 tight end in the 2021 class. Brock Bowers ended up No. 2. Bowers skipped his senior season, which California held in the spring, to enroll at Georgia. Bowers finished as the No. 59 overall player that year.
• The first tackle expected to go on Thursday night is Joe Alt , who was a top-20 offensive tackle in 2021 and the No. 180 overall player. Alt was a former tight end who didn't get as many eyes on him as he continued his massive growth that year in lockdown.
• Two tackles who ranked among the top three are projected first-round draft picks, JC Latham , who was the No. 1 tackle that year and Amarius Mims , who was No. 3.  
• Another five-star tackle, Kingsley Suamataia , had a buzz-worthy NFL combine and could go in the first but is more likely a Day 2 pick. Suamataia transferred from Oregon to BYU after his freshman season. 
• Tuimoloau aside, the top defensive linemen in the Class of 2021 have had star-crossed careers. Korey Foreman had a big game against UCLA in 2022 but left USC for Fresno State  to seek a fresh start this season. Leonard Taylor ranked No. 3 that year among defensive linemen, No. 5 overall, and is projecting to be a Day 2-pick at best. Taylor played at Miami. 
• EDGE prospect Dallas Turner was the No. 12 overall player in that class and he's projecting in the top 12 of this year's draft. A big hit there.
• Another first-round player will be Texas' Byron Murphy. Murphy didn't make the Top247 but was a four-star for 247Sports. 
• No true linebacker is projected to go in the first round on Thursday. The top three linebackers in the 2021 class — Clemson 's Barrett Carter , Georgia's Smael Mondon and Alabama 's Deontae Lawson —, all returned to school for their senior year.
• The first defensive lineman off the board is up for debate. Some project it to be Cooper DeJean , the No. 8 safety in 2021. Some project it to be Terrion Arnold , a five-star in 2021 and the No. 2 safety.
• The No. 1 safety recruit that year, James Williams , declared for the draft but will probably go Day 3. 
• The No. 1 cornerback that year, Kool-Aid McKinstry , was the No. 13 overall player in that class and projects to the first round himself.
• The No. 1 athlete in that class, Ja'Tavion Sanders , was a five-star who had a bright future at either tight end or defensive line. Sanders ultimately settled in at tight end and he's projecting to the back end of the first round and should be the second tight end after Bowers.

A lot of hits. A lot of misses. A lot to still be determined. Ladies and gentlemen: The Class of 2021.
