How to use Reedsy to Independently Publish Your Book

The term “self-publishing” doesn’t mean that you sit in a cabin in the woods all by yourself and emerge with a published book as if you’d done it all singlehandedly. It’s rare to find one person who has all the skills required to turn an idea into a physical book. We need cover designers, formatters, web designers, assistants, and more. You might be self-publishing, but you will need some help. But what if you don’t know anyone who can help? Where can you find skilled professionals who can produce the high-quality work your book deserves?I asked Ricardo Fayet, the cofounder of Reedsy, a curated community of book professionalsIn this week’s episode, you’ll learnHow to search Reedsy to find experienced professionals who specialize in your genreHow Reedsy vets the professionals in their marketplaceHow Reedsy makes money and saves you money at the same timeListen in to discover how Reedsy can help indie and traditional authors create beautiful, compelling, and marketable books, and find all the related links in the blog version.Support the show

Platform Overrated?

You’re probably tired of hearing that you need a large platform to be a successful author. Some industry professionals believe having a large platform is equivalent to having a large social media following. If you’ve been listening to the Christian Publishing Show or Novel Marketing, you know that having a social media following doesn’t necessarily mean you have a platform. Nor does it mean you’ll sell more books than someone not on social media. In fact, sometimes people sell more books by spending less time on social media.Authors hear me say, “Your social media following isn’t very important.” But when they talk to a literary agent or publisher, those people care about social media numbers. How do you navigate this platform predicament?I asked Mary DeMuth, literary agent and author of more than 50 books. She’s been in the Christian publishing industry for 20 years and recently wrote about how author platform is broken. In this episode, you’ll learnThe history behind the prominence of author platformHow the author-platform landscape is changingYour biggest advantage in a digital worldListen in or read the blog version to learn how to navigate the author platform predicament and what you can do to help change the status quo in the publishing industry. Creative Writing: Admission & Financial Awards

Admission requirements.

Enrollment in the Creative Writing major or minor depends on your ACT score. A score of 22 or higher in reading is required. You also must submit a portfolio of your writing. This portfolio also completes the requirements to apply for the Angie Thomas Writers Scholarship.

If you have questions about the creative writing program, please call the department chair, Dr. Randy Smith, at 601-968-8996. You also can email questions to Dr. Smith at [email protected] .

If you have questions about the scholarship or the application process, contact the Office of Admission at 1-800-960-5940 or [email protected].

If you don’t meet the admission criteria, you may apply for provisional admission. If you’re approved for such an admission status, you enter the program on academic probation, and your status will be reviewed after two semesters.

Review Portfolio Requirements

Scholarship: Angie Thomas Scholars

The Angie Thomas Writer’s Scholarship — named in honor of 2011 BFA alumna Angie Thomas, the bestselling author of The Hate U Give, On the Come Up, and Concrete Rose — was established in the fall of 2019. The award provides one freshman creative writing student with a four-year, full-ride scholarship (including tuition, room, and board). Other applicants may receive smaller awards and the designation of Angie Thomas Scholars.

To qualify, you must be accepted for admission, submit your high school GPA and test scores, complete your FAFSA and submit the portfolio requirements.

For scholarship questions, talk with your admission officer or contact the Office of Admission at 601-968-5940 or [email protected] .

Scholarship: Distinguished Arts

We are excited that you are interested in pursuing your desire to major in creative writing at Belhaven University. At Belhaven, we place a very high value in providing the highest quality fine arts programs.

The foundation of your financial aid award will be your academic scholarship, which is determined by your GPA and ACT score.  After your portfolio review, you may be eligible for additional aid based on your performance level and family financial need.

Here are the specific steps you need to follow:

  • Apply to Belhaven so that we can begin the process for you to be accepted to the University.
  • Submit/report your high school GPA and either your ACT, SAT, or CLT test scores. Based on this information, we will offer you an academic scholarship that recognizes your academic achievement.
  • Plan a campus visit to have your portfolio reviewed with one of our creative writing professors. Your portfolio will be taken into consideration as we complete your final scholarship award package.
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA (available January 1). The FAFSA will let us know what amount of federal assistance OR Belhaven need based assistance you would be eligible to receive. No matter what you think your family might qualify for from the federal government, we STRONGLY encourage you to complete the FAFSA as Belhaven's grants are typically more generous than the government might indicate you could receive.
  • After we have all your information (academic record, portfolio, and FAFSA) you will receive a comprehensive financial aid package that is influenced by all three of these areas.
  • Please contact the admission office at 1-800-960-5940 or [email protected] to learn more or to meet with an admission counselor.

Creative Writing: Student Opportunities

Field experiences.

Each year, we visit multiple writing conferences and festivals, allowing you to meet and network with professional writers and other students. These events are also an opportunity for you to learn about the latest developments — and career options — in writing and publishing.

Visiting Writers

We invite two writers to join our faculty as visiting mentors and teachers every year. They help guide your work and your writing philosophy, encouraging you to grow in your craft and creativity.

The Brogue, our journal of fine arts, is published annually by the Creative Writing Department. You can submit original work and serve on the editorial staff. View the digital edition .

Writing Workshops

Practice your craft in writing workshops in short fiction, long fiction, speculative fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, writing for children and young adults, scriptwriting, screenwriting, and playwriting.

As you develop your skills and understand your calling, you may want to do extended work in a particular genre—fantasy, literary nonfiction, children’s literature, long poems, or more. Look for the Special Topics Workshop .

What is the special topic? It varies each time we offer the workshop, so check with your advisor. And, come prepared to write, to share your work, and to contribute—no auditing allowed.

Career Development Courses

As a skilled communicator, you have many career options. Part of the Belhaven BFA in Creative Writing involves taking courses in one or more applied areas: business, communications, education, graphic design, or film.

Follow your calling and develop the career to match at Belhaven.

Shelley, I published a Christian Modern allegory Novel using KDP, after failure to get anything but Christian Publishers offering Joint/Shared Publications. Research validates this to be a one sided money maker for the Publisher. Profession Editors loved the book and thinks it is very good. Now I have a Amazon book title HellCniht – A Demon Speaks without publicity or an affordable campaign. Free advertising for a good Christian book is a thing of the past. Christian advertising without big cash seems impossible. Any Solutions?

What are your respective church backgrounds? What is Christian Writer’s Groups denominational background? What are your doctrinal beliefs?

May 11, 2022 at 10:18 am

Right now we attend a non-denominational church, but I grew up in the Church of God from Anderson, Indiana and CJ grew up in a Baptist church. We follow Jesus and believe in being led by the Holy Spirit and have people from many denominations in our community.

Course Syllabus

Spiritual Writing

Find the balance between the personal and the powerful, and learn how to share your thoughts with readers of differing beliefs or traditions..

This class will ask what, if anything, can make nonfiction writing “spiritual.” You will read selections from essays and memoirs in the spiritual writing genre and try composing your own versions of this material. How can we write about something so personal and powerful and share it with an audience of differing beliefs or traditions? How do writers move beyond saccharine sentimentality to illuminate a truth? You will choose a spiritual question or subject to explore in depth by writing two 500-word pieces and one article/essay of up to 3,500 words. The course will provide tips and inspiration for getting started, gathering material, and revising your work for publication. Writers from all backgrounds and faiths are welcome.

How it works:

Each week provides:

  • discussions of assigned readings and other general writing topics with peers and the instructor
  • written lectures and a selection of readings

Some weeks also include:

  • writing prompts and/or assignments
  • opportunities to submit a full-length essay for instructor and/or peer review (up to 3,500 words)
  • optional video/tele conferences that are open to all students in Week 2 (and which will be available afterwards as a recording for those who cannot participate)

To create a better classroom experience for all, you are required to participate weekly to receive instructor feedback on your work.

Week 1: Shaping the Spiritual

This week will cover how writers working in the genre might define and describe “spiritual writing.” You’ll take a look at how the body, culture, or identity might shape the parameters of a story or your approach. We’ll also explore the ways in which writing itself can serve as spiritual practice, both playful and prayerful. To get the juices flowing, you will have the option to write a short piece (up to 500 words) to share with the class, and you will choose a subject for your primary assignment.

Week 2: Framing the “I” in Faith

You’ll confront challenges of placing individual perspectives of faith—so close to the heart—on the page as art. Often, we do not speak of spiritual or religious subjects because they can be just as divisive as inclusive, as sappy as salient. How can you mine your relationship to belief without alienating readers or losing the complexity that marks lived experience, particularly in the realm of emotion? You’ll consider how form, voice, or narrative distance can frame such issues in creative ways. In preparation for the primary assignment, you will have the option to write another short piece (up to 500 words) to share with the class.

Week 3: Engaging the Other

Spiritual writing often engages people, places, or things that perplex, disturb, or mystify, and that draw us out of ourselves. Whether you face a religious institution’s complicated history, a family tradition, a desert, or a baffling stranger, you encounter uncertainty in stuff seen and unseen. You’ll imagine how to embrace such tensions with the “Other” in your work, and the ways in which you might incorporate disparate backdrops or backgrounds without losing the personal element or narrative momentum. You will also submit your primary assignment (an essay/article of up to 3,500 words).

Week 4: Speaking to You

Martin Buber writes that you “not only speak of God but also speak to him,” and Madeleine L’Engle adds that you don’t love in general, you love in particular—to live a spiritual life means risking closer communion with each other, with the earth, with the divine. You’ll study how writers might embody such desire—and its difficulties—through character or charism, prophecy or plea. You will also have the option of sharing your primary assignment with a small group of classmates for peer review.

Week 5: Re-Seeing and Representing Your Work

This week will cover techniques to revise and sharpen a spiritual writing piece to make it ready for publication. We’ll discuss best practices for submitting work to journals but also consider the bigger picture: allowing for risk and even failure, loving the roadblocks, and sustaining a practice.

The IELTS is administered jointly by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment at over 1,100 test centres and 140 countries. These test centres supervise the local administration of the test and recruit, train and monitor IELTS examiners.

IELTS tests are available on 48 fixed dates each year, usually Saturdays and sometimes Thursdays, and may be offered up to four times a month at any test centre, including Elektrostal' depending on local needs. Go to IELTS test locations to find a test centre in or nearby Elektrostal' and to check for upcoming test dates at your test centre.

Test results are available online 13 days after your test date. You can either receive your Test Report Form by post or collect it from the Test Centre. You will normally only receive one copy of the Test Report Form, though you may ask for a second copy if you are applying to the UK or Canada for immigration purposes - be sure to specify this when you register for IELTS. You may ask for up to 5 copies of your Test Report Form to be sent directly to other organisations, such as universities.

There are no restrictions on re-sitting the IELTS. However, you would need to allow sufficient time to complete the registration procedures again and find a suitable test date.
