Google Classroom is a digital hub where students, teachers, and supporters of both can engage and collaborate. You can create user-friendly quizzes and assignments, along with supporting materials, in just a few clicks. All you need is a free Google account.

To get started, open your web browser, and go to classroom.google.com . Sign in to your Google account, and then either create a class or click an existing one. Once you're in a class, click the "Classwork" tab, click "Create," and then select "Quiz Assignment."

The quiz assignment form is identical to the basic assignment option, with the addition of a blank Google Form that will serve as your quiz. You can use both the assignment and quiz again later.

In the quiz assignment menu, give your quiz a title, and then provide additional instructions, if necessary.

Click "Add" if you want to attach a file from Google Drive, a web link, your computer, or YouTube. You can also click "Create" to automatically create and attach a file from Google Docs , Slides , Sheets , Drawings , or Forms .

For any additional attachments, click the drop-down menu within each assignment to choose whether students can view or edit that file. You can also choose to make copies of a file for each student.

If you attach any files other than the initial blank quiz in Google Forms, Grade importing is automatically disabled. This feature sends the results of the Quiz to the Grades tab on the main page of your class. If you want to disable this feature with only one attachment, toggle-Off the "Grade Importing" option.

You can use the drop-down menus on the left to select assignees, set the point value of the Quiz, and its due date. You can also associate your Quiz with an existing topic or create a new one. If you want to add customizable criteria you'll use to evaluate submissions, click "Rubric."

Finally, select the  "Originality Reports"  checkbox if you want to check submissions for possible plagiarism. Note that free Google Classroom accounts are limited to three originality reports per class, though.

Click "Blank Quiz" to customize your quiz in Google Forms.

This opens your quiz in a separate window. All changes you make will save automatically. When you load your first Google Form, you're given a quick tour of the interface.

Click the title field to edit the name of your quiz form, and then type your questions in the questions field. By default, the first question will be set as "Multiple Choice."

To change this, click the drop-down menu on the right. You can then change your questions to short answers, checkboxes, drop-downs, grids, dates, or times. You can also use the sidebar on the right to add or import questions, sections, or files.

After you add all of your questions, close your browser window. Back in the Google Classroom quiz assignment window, click "Assign" at the top right. Select the arrow next to "Assign" if you want to save your quiz as a draft or schedule it for a future date.

Google Classroom is an incredible platform from Google that you can use to deliver courses and teach students, online. The platform lets you share files, create assignments, and communicate with your students, virtually.

The good news is that the platform is completely free to use. So, in this post, I will be showing you how to create a quiz assignment for your students in Google Classroom.

How to Create a Quiz Assignment

1. Open Google Classroom on your account dashboard, click on the ‘ Classwork ‘ tab, and then click ‘ Create ‘ to create a new classroom quiz.

2. From the drop-down menu after clicking the ‘ Create ‘ option, select ‘ Quiz Assignment ‘. Upon clicking that, Google automatically creates a google form to go with the quiz, which by default is titled “ Blank Quiz “.

Other Quiz Setup Options

There’s an option to include a title for your quiz as well as an option to put in instructions or messages for your students.

You also have the option to attach files (anything relating to your quiz) from Google Drive, YouTube, or link to your quiz. So, when your students take the quiz, they’ll be able to see the attached file as a resource to help them during the quiz.

On the right side of your screen, you will see the option to select class, an option to select specific students for the quiz (by default, it is set to ‘ All Student ‘), another option to input the total number of point for the quiz, and another option to set a due date and time.

3. After adding the quiz title, instructions, and other settings, click on the default Google form ( Blank Quiz ) created, and it will take you to Google forms where you can then set your quiz questions.

4. Next, give your ‘blank quiz’ a proper title, and then you can begin setting questions.

5. Select a question type. By default, Google Classroom makes questions ‘ Multiple Choice ‘ questions but you can click to change it to other options like Dropdown, Checkbox, and Short answer questions.

6. To add another question, click the plus (+) icon to the right side of the screen.

Other Things to Note

If you want Google classroom to automatically mark the answers, click on the ‘ Answer Key ‘ option, and then provide the right answer. Also, if you would like to make a question compulsory for students to answer before a submission is possible, toggle-on the ‘ Required ‘ option at the bottom- right corner of the Google form page.

7. Once you’re done with your quiz set up on the Google form, close the page and go back to the quiz assignment page.

Get the Students Busy

You can either give your students access to the quiz assignment immediately by clicking on ‘ Assign ‘ at the top-right corner of the screen or schedule the quiz assignment for a later date. After assigning quiz assignments to students, Google classroom lets you see the number of students/participants that have turned it in. Super seamless and intuitive.

Google Classroom: When to Use the Different Assignments & How to Assign Work

Here is a guide to set the different assignments under the Classwork tab in Google Classroom. This brief tutorial shows the different options; assignment, quiz assignment, question and material, when and how to assign them.

The object of this tutorial is to give you an overview of what you can achieve with the different assignments supported on Google Classroom. You will need to first head over to the Classwork tab, second after Stream on the top once you are inside your classroom. This tutorial assumes that you have created your first classroom. You can see how to start your own virtual classroom in under 2 minutes for help. We will cover the following:

  • create assignments and questions
  • use topics to organise classworks into modules or units
  • order work by dragging them up or down in Classwork page

Types of Assignment

There are four types of assignments you can create on Google Classroom. They are as follows:

  • Assignment (points awarded, good for final assignment with manual marking and use of Rubric)
  • Quiz assignment (points awarded, good for automatic marking and grading)
  • Question (no points awarded, good for single question quick survey, short answer, multiple choice)
  • Material (no points awarded, good for reading assignment or lesson preparations)

Apart from the above, you have the ability to reuse existing post and create topic header. The former lets you reuse posts you have published on Stream in this or other Classes. The latter is topic header you can add to organise the classwork by modules or units. Let’s start looking at each of these different classwork, when to use them and how to create them.

A. Assignment

Probably the most commonly used classwork is the assignment. Here you can pick one of the following top options when creating an assignment. Beyond filling in the title and instruction, choose to:

  • Add an existing resource: Google Drive , Link , File or YouTube
  • Create a new document: create a new Google Docs , Slides , Sheets , Drawings or Forms

The first option allows you to add a Google Drive, Link to web resources, upload or choose an online file to add to Classroom’s Google Drive. You can use this to assign work like “access the work files or resources in Google Drive”, “revise or research using this link”, “download, open and read the document attached” and “watch this video tutorial or recorded seminar”.

The second option lets you create online documents. This can be a word document, slide presentation file, spreadsheet, drawing or forms. There is no need to upload a document. Here is where your assignment is created and marked totally online. Use the option to assigning a copy to each student and marking them separately with in-line feedback, grade and comments.

As you can see Assignment covers a lot of grounds in terms of resources and online document format supported.

Step by Step Guide on How to Create an Assignment using Google Docs

Here is how to create an online assignment using Google Docs. [number correspond to image in gallery below]

  • Open your class
  • Click on the second tab, Classwork
  • Click “ + Create ” button and choose Assignment
  • In the pop up window, add Title and Instructions
  • Click “ + Create ” button and choose Docs [4]
  • A new tab will open to show the new Google Docs [5]
  • Change the title of the document by clicking on Untitled document (top left corner)
  • Enter the instruction for assignment into the body, look for  All changes saved in Drive  status in top bar then close tab and return to previous Assignment tab [5]
  • Don’t worry if the document still says Untitled document, next to this click drop down menu and choose Make a copy for each student . [6]
  • Complete the options in the right side bar (for course, all or select students, grade points, due date, topic and marking rubric (optional) then click Assign button. [7]

NOTE: You can also choose to Schedule the assignment, save or discard draft by clicking on the drop down arrow next to the Assign button.

You will then be returned to the Classwork page where you can see the assignment you have just created, click on it to open a summary card. [8]

B. Quiz Assignment

Based on Google Forms, the quiz is the other assignment you can create as classwork. This is great to gauge the students understanding of the subject. Like any questionnaire or form, you can use different field types when designing your form.

Step by Step Guide on How to Create an Quiz Assignment

  • Click “ + Create ” button and choose Quiz Assignment
  • A new pop-up window will appear, enter the Title and Instructions for this quiz
  • Click on the Blank Quiz link to open the Google Forms file. Click on the title Blank Quiz to change this and start editing the quiz by completing and adding more questions including answers and points for automatic marking.
  • Once you have completed your editing, look for All changes saved in Drive , close the tab and return to previous Assignment tab.
  • Complete the options in the right side bar (for course, all or select students, grade points, due date, topic and marking rubric (optional) then click Assign button.

You will then be returned to the Classwork page where you can see the assignment you have just created, click on it to open a summary card.

C. Question

The third type of assignment is Question. This is more of a simple single question survey with option to choose between a short answer or multiple choice answer. Nothing more beyond that. It is probably the quickest to set up and least complicated. This is useful to get quick answers from the group. Students can be allowed to see everyones answers and change their answer. No points can be awarded for this assignment.

Step by Step Guide on How to Create Question as Assignment

  • Click “ + Create ” button and choose Question
  • A new pop-up window will appear, enter the Question and Instructions for this question
  • Choose from drop down menu to select Short answer or Multiple choice .
  • Here you can also add resources or create online files in Google Drive.
  • Complete the options in the right side bar; class(es) the Question is for, assign to All or specific students, Points, Due date and Topic. Also choose if other students can reply to each other and edit their answer if Short answer is chosen. Or, choose if students can see class summary if Multiple choice is chosen.
  • Click the Ask button when ready.

D. Material

The last and final assignment is the Material. Here you can assign learning materials for students to study and prepare. As before, you can upload a resource or create online file as material. Like Questions assignment type, no points can be awarded for Material assignment type.

  • Click “ + Create ” button and choose Material
  • In the pop-up window, complete Title and Description field
  • Choose to add a resource or + create online document
  • Then configure the assignment using right sidebar, pick to assign to All students or select individuals and pick the Topic this comes under.
  • When ready click the Post button.

In Google Classroom on the Classwork tab you can create assignments. One of the choices is “Quiz Assignment.” DO NOT USE THIS!

What is the difference between assignment and “Quiz assignment”? They are both assignments. You can edit, score, and reuse. Quiz assignment adds a blank Google Form for you that has the quiz setting turned on. You do not need this.

I almost never make my Google Forms from blank inside of Google Classroom. Usually I already have my Form. Go to forms.google.com and click “Quiz” if you want to have the quiz toggle pre done for you. No matter what you need to go check the quiz settings and other settings in the Google Form. So having quiz pre toggled is not much of a time saver. But it’s kinda nice to get it started.

Filter for Google Forms

It is a mystery to me why Google Products such as Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Forms do not have a Share to Classroom button. It has a share to Facebook or Twitter option… So since Forms does not allow you to direct share to Classroom simply create an assignment in Google Classroom and click on the “Add” button and choose Google Drive.

Using Quiz assignments with Google Forms makes it so that when the students click Submit on the Google Form it automatically marks as done in Google Classroom.

Also, you can delete the blank quiz that it automatically adds and upload your own.

I just learned this and it has been a huge help so that my Google Form assignments are automatically marked as done in Google Classroom.

Do some research and try it out! I have never used the quiz assignment option before because I didn’t think you could reuse form but you can.

However I do have some students who have completed the form and then clicked ‘Submit’ and after I clicked the ‘View Submission’ button it had no files attached…

Not sure what you mean by “files attached”

We’re halfway through 2020. This week I’m taking some time off from the blog to work on some other projects. The rest of this week I’m going to re-run some of the most popular posts and videos of the year so far.  As the spring went on and it became clear that school was going to be entirely online for an extended, indefinite period of time I started to get a lot of questions about how to deliver timed assessments online. In particular, a lot of people wanted to know if it was possible to do that through Google Classroom and Google Forms. In this video I demonstrate how to create and distribute a timed quiz in Google Classroom.

Step-by-step directions: 1. Create a new quiz assignment in Classwork in Google Classroom. 2. Create your quiz in the Google Form that was created by step 1 above. 3. Install the FormLimiter add-on for Google Forms. 4. Enable a date and time limit in the FormLimiter add-on. 5. Use the scheduling tool in Google Classroom to make your quiz live at a specific time.

Assignment or Material in Google Classroom – What is the Difference?

A source of some confusion when developing a course in Google Classroom is whether to post an Assignment or Material. It is important to distinguish between these two options. Keep reading to understand the differences.

In Google Classroom , on the Classwork tab, teachers can schedule posts. These can contain instructions and resources for students participating in the class. There are several choices including Assignment, Quiz assignment, Question, and Material.

Types of Google Classroom Posts

  • Assignment: An assignment is a post that requires students to submit work upon completion. You can allocate points to the task or mark it as ungraded. For each person in the class, there is the option to assess the final submission and record the grade and/comments. Assignments are ideal for tracking and evaluating student progress.
  • Quiz assignmen t: A quiz assignment ask a series of questions in Google Forms. You can assign points to each question and set the correct answer to automatically grade responses. Create this type of post to construct a test that assesses students’ knowledge of a topic.
  • Question: Question is a post that asks either a short answer or multiple choice. You can assign points or leave it ungraded. A response does not automatically grade itself. This means, if your intention is to score the answer, the mark must be manually assigned. This option is best used for a quick review to gauge students’ understanding of a concept or to conduct a poll.
  • Material: Material is a post that includes general information about the class or topic of study. This might include a course syllabus, reference sheet, or welcome message. The students read or view the file, web page, or video. Points cannot be assigned, nor can student activity be tracked.

Assignment or Material – Which is the Correct Choice?

To understand whether to pick Assignment or Material ask yourself this question… Do I need to track or grade the task? If yes, then you need to create an Assignment . However, if you only need to share information, then select Material .

An illustration of what is happening in Google Classroom will make the distinction between an Assignment or Material clearer. Refer to the image below. It shows the Grades tab in Google Classroom. The Grades tab is an electronic grading book that organizes Assignments into a table that allows teachers to:

  • automatically calculate class average on an assignment
  • open a student’s submitted assignment
  • record student grade
  • identify students whose assignments have not been turned in

IMPORTANT: Material does not show up on the Grades tab.

Assignment Versus Material Features

If you are still uncertain about whether to select Assignment or Material when creating a post consider the features you have available for each choice:

An Example from TechnoEarth

Are you still unsure about whether to pick Assignment or Material? Here is a real world example…

TechnoEarth is a TechnoKids technology project that uses Google Apps to design an interactive infographic. If you were teaching using these instructional materials as a curriculum unit below are some of the resources. Each is labelled as either an Assignment or Material. Use this example to make connections to your own curriculum units:

  • Acid Rain Fact Sheet : Material – This is a resource that summarizes facts about acid rain. It is an information sheet in PDF format that can be attached to a Material post. It may assist students with research.
  • Research Outline : Assignment – This is a resource that is a template for organizing facts about an environmental topic. Every student needs their own copy. For this reason, it should be attached to an Assignment post.
  • Assignment Worksheets 1-18 : Assignment – These are worksheets with instructions on how to complete the task of building an infographic. Some worksheets include questions that students must answer, which means every student needs their own copy. Alternatively, some worksheets require students to submit work for grading. For these reasons, TechnoKids worksheets should be attached to Assignment posts.
  • Coral Bleaching Infographic: Assignment – This is an example of a completed infographic – it does convey information. However, this file accompanies a worksheet with questions about the content. Since it is an additional resource that is required to complete a task, it is attached to an Assignment post.
  • TechnoEarth Skill Summary: Material – This is a resource that summarizes technology skills. It can provide students with a thorough understanding of what they will learn throughout the curriculum unit. It can be attached to a Material post to provide students with additional information.

Google Assignments vs. Google Classroom: What’s the difference?

Google Assignments (previously known as Google Course Kit) is a free toolkit by Google to help instructors to easily manage assignments. Whereas the all too familiar Google classroom is a platform to create and manage classes online in a simple way. Although they share a lot of features, there are certain differences between Google Assignments and Google Classroom.

Google Classroom has all the features of Google Assignments but you can’t integrate it  with another LMS. Google Assignments handles Assignment submissions and marking where Google Classroom is a Learning Management System (LMS).

In this article, we will tell you what’s the purpose of Google Assignments and Google Classroom. We will also tell you how to take advantage of both. But first, let us get you quickly through what is an LMS.

What is an LMS?

A learning management system, or LMS, is a software to manage courses and assignments. It features file sharing, announcements, grading tools, and all the tools a teacher or educational organization needs to run a course online.

Learning Management Systems solve the problems for online course management. While the industry leading LMS products like Moodle and Canvas are robust and feature rich, Google Assignments and Google Classroom solve specific problems only.

Google Assignments vs. Google Classroom

The key differences can be sorted like this:

How to schedule assignments or assign material

Environment.

  • Google Classroom

Add materials

  • Go to  Google Classsroom .
  • Click the class >  Classwork .
  • At the top, click  Create  >  Material .
  • Enter a title and a description.

Schedule materials

  • To schedule the same material across multiple classes, make sure to select all classes you want to include.
  • Next to  Post , click the Down arrow  Schedule .
  • When you enter a time, Classroom defaults to PM unless you specify AM.
  • (Optional) Select a topic for each class.
  • (Optional) To replicate your selected time and date for the first class into all subsequent classes, click  Copy settings to all .

When Is It OK to Use Google Translate in the English-Learner Classroom?

Anyone who has any empathy at all knows, it’s easy to understand why an English-language learner would choose to constantly use Google Translate in their writing.

And, as every teacher of ELLs knows, overuse of Google Translate (and similar tools) can be hindrances to language acquisition.

Today’s post will explore various strategies educators use in the classroom to try to strike a balance.

Personally, I sound like a broken record with my constant refrain when students are writing: “Use Google Translate for words , not for sentences!” Sometimes, they even listen to my plea.

‘Context-Driven’

First, let’s acknowledge just how daunting it can be to be thrown into an English-only biology (or other) course as a language learner. It’s not easy for native speakers, but one thing everyone has in common is that there is A LOT of new vocabulary and there are endless new topics. Biology is like its own language, and that realization is what keeps me working on ways to help everyone access the material more effectively.

I think it’s useful to consider some of these questions first, though, as we think about how and when to either curtail or encourage the use of translation tools because it’s context-driven and I believe every situation is different:

1. What are the learning objectives?

Will the translation tools help multilingual learners access content and demonstrate their understanding more effectively? OR will overreliance on translation hinder their ability to practice and develop their authentic language skills? Sometimes, it’s much more efficient to translate, but what is the overarching goal?

2. Is it a language scaffold or a crutch?

Can translation help ensure multilingual learners understand the instructions, for example, so that they can approach their work with more confidence? OR could it become a crutch that inhibits them from actively trying to engage in language practice? I know it’s become far easier for students to translate entire pages of text at a time and to rely on peers to interpret my questions.

That means I have to decide whether or not that’s OK; I’m often OK with newer learners reading the translations or even getting supportive interpretations for a few weeks, but they are typically expected to respond in English, even it it’s one word from a word bank. I also provide reading and listening assignments with text-based questions to build their confidence in using specific English vocabulary related to the lessons and to help them see what they can do.

3. What is the context of use?

Connected to the idea of a scaffold, in specific circumstances like independent reading or mini-research assignments, translation tools can support multilingual-learner access to information and enhance their understanding, BUT it can really dampen the development of their listening and speaking skills, particularly in real-time communication scenarios, like working with a partner or reporting out facts. Providing sentence starters, word banks, visual vocabulary, and content-based phrases can be incredibly supportive.

4. How urgent are their needs?

Allowing students to use translation tools in class can deprive them of the opportunity to build confidence and “fail in safety.” Yes, it takes more time to allow them to navigate their assignments, but chances are high that your class time is the only chance they have to use the English language they’re encountering. Most of my multilingual learners use their native language throughout the day, and we are in essence, teaching English as a foreign language. Hence my goal to expose them to as much English usage as possible and to provide a variety of opportunities to speak, read, write, and listen in English.

5. How does it affect cognitive development?

It’s possible that translation can reduce what is known as “cognitive load” and allow multilingual learners to focus on understanding content and ideally make some connections between languages. (i.e., reflecting on language structures and being able to compare translations with information provided by the teacher).

However, too much reliance on the native-language use might just bypass the mental processes they should be building to actively think in English and to solve language-related challenges. This also includes building self-confidence in their language-learning journey and learning to ask for help from others. The sense of urgency for developing these abilities is powerful with older learners seeking jobs and accessing a ton of content while in high school.

6. How do peers and parents view its use?

In other words, what support do your students have for learning English? Some families will push for their students to really optimize their opportunities to speak and work only in English, while others are supported by their peers and parents to use translation assistance. Either scenario has its pros and cons, and both can boost their motivation and confidence, BUT they can lead to potential stigma or misconceptions about their language-learning abilities and thereby affect their self-esteem. It’s tricky!

I hope that these questions and perspectives can guide teachers in making thoughtful and well-informed decisions about the viability of translation tools with multilingual learners in their classrooms. It truly is context-driven and it helps to understand your students’ language growth so that you can better nurture authentic language development and communication abilities. Translation isn’t always easier, but remember, our multilingual learners bring a wealth of knowledge, both cultural and intellectual, and it’s a gift to honor that.

When my district went to 1:1 laptops a few years ago, I embraced the change as a welcome paradigm shift. But digital classrooms bring a distressing problem for ELLs: overuse of Google Translate.

When a student is reliant on Translate, it signals a lack of confidence in his own cognitive skills. Before they had on-demand access to translation software, their diffidence may have manifested as copying from other students’ papers or disassociating from the lesson altogether. So while it might be tempting to cast aspersions on the translation tool, it is not the source of the problem. The cause of the student’s reliance on Translate is that they believe they are incapable of acquiring a new language.

Learn to handle complex tasks like translation through a growth mindset

Kara Lawson, the head coach of Duke University’s women’s basketball team, has gained a following for her motivational talk about what it means to “make yourself someone who handles hard well.” Although Lawson is speaking to athletes, her message projects the feeling many teachers want to convey to ELLs who rely heavily on translation programs.

As a teacher, I introduce Lawson’s message in a context that newcomers can easily identify with: reflecting on their own growth from when they first enrolled at their school in the United States. “Do you remember how confused you were the first week after your arrival? You couldn’t find the correct classrooms, you didn’t know how to buy lunch, and there was no way you could remember all your teachers’ names. How do you feel now?

All of those previously difficult things—places, names, routines—are exactly the same, but you have adapted to handle it better. Your mind became stronger to meet the challenge, so now it is no longer challenging. The same will happen for English-language proficiency if you accept that you can handle hard things better. You must believe that your brain is smarter than Google Translate.”

Craft classroom cultures that support risk-taking

To move students away from heavy reliance on Google Translate, they need to trust that the classroom is an environment where mistakes are inevitable and will be met with empathy. This is where building relationships becomes key to learning growth.

For SLIFE (Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education) students who may never have experienced success in school, vulnerability can be an uncomfortable feeling. A student who has not built a foundation of trust with their teacher might think, “School already makes me feel inadequate, and now you want to take away my best tool? Nah.” But Google Translate is the equivalent to training wheels, meant to be removed when the operator is still unsteady but understands the basics of balance and self-correction.

Teachers must continuously reinforce the idea that students cannot wait for English acquisition to get easier—every student can make the mental shift to meet the hard task of learning English starting right now.

Not Specific to ‘Domains’

This is a hot topic and a frequently visited conversation piece currently where I am at. I see Google Translate as translation of the masses. What I mean by that is, Google translates the “bigger” picture of things. It’s not necessarily specific to domains or contents. With that, it can then be a “lost” translation that doesn’t provide support or accuracy due mostly to context and dialect errors if not enough content is given. Or, perhaps, there are multiple meanings of the word, and Google uses the most common one.

Thus, utilizing Google Translate for documents, assignments, class content, and lengthier, formal, community-based agendas isn’t tremendously useful as there are errors and the context of the piece isn’t always effectively received.

However, when students who are reviewing directions or a word that is challenging for them, and the words are more “universal,” utilizing Google Translate can be helpful. I would not encourage Google Translate on a daily basis; however, in those quick times of need where context or dialect won’t necessarily affect it, I let it happen.

In regards to my response when students use it, I clearly emphasize the importance of checking it over with myself, a teacher, or a peer to ensure it is done correctly. I lead with a positive message that it is great that they have found a resource; however, it should not be the only tool, nor should it be used for everything.

Samsung Introduces New AI Class Assistant for the WAD Interactive Display at ISTELive 2024

New ai-powered features include automatic transcriptions, generative class summaries and quizzes, as well as voice-enabled whiteboard functions to elevate classroom engagement.

Samsung Electronics America, Inc. (Booth #1632) will showcase new AI-powered upgrades to its Interactive Display (model name: WAD) at the 2024 ISTELive conference in Denver (June 23-26). First launched in May 2024, the Interactive Display WAD series will offer cutting-edge generative AI capabilities through the Samsung AI Class Assistant to help educators save time and focus on guiding students through their learning journeys.

“The new AI capabilities in our Interactive Display unlock new opportunities for educators to scale their well-established instructional practices and create immersive learning environments where every student can thrive,” said Sara Grofcsik, Head of Sales, Display Division, Samsung Electronics America. “We are excited to introduce these new enhancements to inspire active learning and empower engagement to reach every student in the classroom.”

Spark New Thinking With AI Capabilities

The Samsung AI Class Assistant provides features like automatic transcriptions and generative summaries of spoken lessons. Educators can instantly share these summaries directly from the Interactive Display after each lesson so that students can review them at their own pace. The AI Class Assistant will also analyze the transcriptions and classroom materials to create instant quizzes for students to demonstrate their understanding as they learn. Students can wirelessly connect to the display and participate in quizzes from their personal devices. These forms of formative assessment allow educators to measure knowledge retention and determine if there are subjects that require further discussion.

Through a collaboration between Samsung and AI education technology company Merlyn Mind , the Interactive Display WAD series will also come equipped with voice recognition technology optimized for classroom instruction. Teachers can use voice commands from anywhere in the classroom to control whiteboard functions and classroom interactions with the display.

Samsung AI Class Assistant will roll out to the Interactive Display WAD series in late 2024. ISTELive attendees will be among the first to preview these new AI capabilities that are set to transform instructional design and classroom learning.

Experience the Google EDLA-certified WAD Interactive Display

The AI Class Assistant adds even more functionality to the WAD Interactive Display, which is Samsung’s first Google Enterprise Devices Licensing Agreement (EDLA)-certified classroom display. Powered by the Android™ 13 operating system and available in 65-, 75- and 86-inch models, the WAD series provides an intuitive experience familiar to students and teachers alike. ​​Various widgets and an easily customizable home screen create more flexibility in building an environment that suits various learning needs.

As a Google EDLA-certified product, the Interactive Display WAD series has built-in support for popular Google services, including Google Classroom and Drive. Pre-installed apps, like YouTube and Google Chrome, and access to additional educational apps for download through the Google Play Store open new possibilities for classroom instruction.

To enhance interactivity, the WAD series offers a natural writing experience with infrared (IR) touch and support for up to 40 simultaneous touchpoints. Teachers and students can wirelessly cast up to nine screens simultaneously on the screen. This feature ensures every student is included and engaged, as content can be shared on both the large display and individual devices. It can be used on iOS, Mac, Windows, Android, or Chrome OS. The display includes a 3-in-1 USB-C port that simplifies connectivity and allows connected devices to charge at up to 65W, as well as HDMI output for easy content sharing.

Since its launch earlier in 2024, the Interactive Display WAD series has been well-received by school leaders and industry experts. At InfoComm , North America’s largest professional audiovisual trade show, the display won Tech & Learning’s Best of Show award and a Systems Contractor News Installation Product Award for Most Innovative Videoconferencing Product. In partnership with education solutions provider STS EDUCATION , Samsung will also take the WAD series on the road this year to schools throughout the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the second-largest school district in the United States.
