How can I get better results?

• Advanced search
• Similar resources
• Don’t be too specific to start with.
• Fewer keywords will widen your search.
• Change, add or remove keywords from your search.
• Keep trying different combinations from your keyword table .

Use symbols to narrow or widen your search

Use an asterisk * to find different endings of your keyword. e.g., sustain* will find sustain, sustainable, sustainability…

Use “quotation marks” to search for a phrase. e.g., “green building” will find resources with this phrase only, not any resource that has the words ‘building’ and ‘green’ anywhere in it.

Use filters to narrow your search results

Most catalogues and databases will provide and option to refine, filter or limit your search results. You can usually filter results by:

• Peer reviewed / Scholarly articles
• Format (article, book, image, thesis, newspaper article, etc.)

Try the advanced search for more control

Most catalogues and databases have this option to allow you to refine what you are searching for. Using the boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT in advanced search can help you control your search more effectively. Watch this video on using AND, OR and NOT .

If you have found a useful resource, use it to find similar resources :

• Check the reference list/bibliography to lead you to other resources on the topic.
• Check the results page for a section called suggested articles , or related readings , etc.
• Check whether it has been cited by a more recent publication.
• Scan the bibliography/reference list for relevant readings.
• Check for other works by the author(s) .
• Use subject headings to help you find more information on the same topic.

Searching for theses/dissertations

Using Library Search

Find AUT print or digital theses, dissertations and exegeses from the Library website :

• Select Books & Media
• Search your topic using the search box
• Include Thesis "Auckland university of technology"  in your search keywords to find AUT theses

The search example below shows keywords used for finding PhD theses on athletes research.

• use the truncation * symbol to broaden your search, e.g. athlete* will find words athlete or athletes
• use quotation marks to search for a phrase, e.g. "Auckland university of technology"

Using Google or Google Scholar

• When searching for a thesis title you knew, use double quotation marks for the exact title search
• When doing a keyword search in Google, go to the Advanced Search option and add tuwhera.aut.ac.nz to the domain field

Borrowing print theses/dissertations

If a thesis or dissertation is not available online, but the Library holds a print copy that you wish to read:

• Request the item using the Library online Chat
• The staff will request the item from the off-campus storage for you. It will be issued to you for use in the Library only

Notes:  If a thesis/dissertation is available online, you are normally expected to use the digital version. Only in special circumstances will the print copy be fetched from the Library off-campus storage for your use.

The Library has started to collect digital copies of some exceptional Bachelor with Honours dissertations recommended by faculties since 2013.

• Go to the Library website , select Books & Media
• Include bachelor honours   "Auckland university of technology"  in your search keywords to find AUT Bachelor (Honours) dissertations
• Digital copy of the Bachelor with Honours dissertations are available to AUT staff and students. AUT network account is required for viewing this collection.
• The Library also holds a small number of print Bachelor with Hounours dissertations. These print copies can be requested from the Library Help Desk or through the Library online Chat

Academic records before the digital age

To mark International Archives Week 3-9 June 2024, there will be a display of academic records outside Special Collections: Level G, Te Herenga Mātauranga Whānui | General Library.

In 1883, the first year of teaching at Auckland University College, the number of students enrolled was small, with only 95 students attending lectures. 1   Student enrolments and academic progress were recorded in a register. This type of register was used until 1927.

Lecturers also kept their own records of student attendance and performance.

Professor Algernon Phillips Withiel Thomas, one of the four original professors at Auckland University College, kept this lecture roll to record attendance at lectures and laboratories for Geology, Agricultural Science, Botany, General Biology and Zoology.

By 1927, student numbers had increased to 1455 2 and the register system proved insufficient. The registers were replaced by a card system. The same card template was used for every student regardless of which faculty they were enrolled in.

In the 1950s colour-coded cards were introduced, with different colours for each faculty. Cards were customised to the requirements of the faculties, with subjects printed onto the cards for specialised degrees such as architecture, law, engineering and commerce. Arts and science degrees were printed with [stage] I, II and III and the specific subjects were handwritten or typed into the space available. A student enrolled in two degrees would have a card for each.

By 1967, the student roll had increased to 6800 and the card system needed to be more efficient. When an Academic Certificate was required, or when a student transferred to another university, the information from the record cards had to be manually entered onto a new card, checked, and signed by the Deputy Registrar (Academic). This involved a lot of checking and typing and was prone to error. A new academic record card was introduced, in which all courses were shown on the same card in chronological order. The card could be folded, with one side showing the information necessary for an Academic Certificate or Transfer of Records. This side could be photographed or otherwise reproduced without any additional typing or checking. The other side of the card contained information specific to the University such as subjects not credited and remarks. At this time, marks were eliminated from the academic record and only grades were recorded. 3

This type of card remained in use until the late 1980s, with only minor changes to the layout and content. Computer systems were now taking over with huge increases in efficiency. Student record systems used by the University of Auckland include nDeva and the current system, PeopleSoft CS [Campus Solutions] 9.

To mark International Archives Week 3-9 June 2024, there will be a display of academic records outside Special Collections: Level G, Te Herenga Mātauranga Whānui | General Library running from 1-7 June 2024. International Archives Week commemorates the day the International Council on Archives (ICA) was created in 1948.
