The Master's Thesis Project is an individual in-depth research or expert design assignment in the specific field of expertise chosen by the student. The nominal duration of a thesis project is approximately 30 weeks (42 ECTS). For students the master programme in September 2022, the Thesis will have nominal study duration of 45 ECTS.

The thesis can roughly be divided into 5 phases. Below, you can find an overview of these phases with a short description. For a more detailed overview what all the phases are about, please refer to the ‘Master Thesis Aerospace Engineering’ Brightspace page. For track related specifications, please contact the Track Coordinator.

  • Orientation

Together with staff and fellow students, discuss thesis possibilities and pick a supervisor.

  • Kick-off meeting

Discuss your thesis subject and your approach with your supervisor and get your subject formally approved.

  • Midterm meeting

Here the thesis progress is discussed and the research goals re-evaluated.

  • Green-light review

The Green-light meeting is deciding whether you are ready for graduating or not. Here your draft thesis should be ready and checked for plagiarism.

  • Graduation Day (Defence, Assessment and Graduation ceremony)

Your last day of studying will consist of a presentation for friends, family etc. and afterwards a defence with just the committee. After you defence, the committee shall determine the assessment. When they are ready, you will officially graduate your MSc degree and receive your diploma.

Note: a student is expected to have finished all the MSc courses. A student may not start the final graduation phase (thesis project) before having successfully completed the BSc programme and the first year of the MSc programme. Deviation from the second requirement is possible, but only if approved by the thesis supervisor (article 10.2 Implementation Regulations).

Combining the Literature Study with the course Research Methodologies is essential (time-wise and contents-wise), as the course helps you to set-up a good thesis proposal. As of September 2022, the Literature Study is incorporated into the Thesis and is the course Research Methodologies no longer mandatory.

It is possible to do your thesis at a company. There are guidelines applicable which can be found on Brightspace. Here you can also find more information on confidentiality regulations, as some companies may request this.

Rethinking the Library Repository

Posted on August 16, 2021 by Alastair Dunning

One of the key parts of the Digital Service Programme is to update the strategic direction and technical infrastructure of the TU Delft Library Repository.

The current repository infrastructure serves many functions. Based on Islandora, along with various other components, it acts a mechanism for searching and downloading Green Open Access research articles , doctoral theses , conference papers , and various other research outputs. Different instances of the repository also deliver Masters’ Theses and parts of TU Delft’s heritage collection .

TU Delft Repository Landing Page

As highlighted in the CNI report on institutional repositories (pdf), new demands from academic staff, the continual arrival of new services from third-party providers and changing institutional requirements mean many libraries are rethinking the role of their repository.

Below are some of the questions that these questions raise:

– Since the TU Delft repository was established, the Research Portal (based on the Pure system for recording research outputs) has also been launched. Is it necessary to have run both systems? Where should TU Delft present a record of its staff’s scholarly output?

Screenshot of Delft Research Portal

– Can a library offer more engaging ways to publish longer forms of academic output (books and theses, for example)? Rather than simply downloading a pdf, can theses and book use protocols such as IIIF to make reading and using such documents a more satisfying experience?

– There is growing demand for university staff to publish and manage many other assets (images, lecture notes and videos, grey literature, events, policy documents). How can a new form of repository allow this freedom? What would that mean for library staff managing the documents and related metadata?

– TU Delft Library also runs its own publishing platform (based on the entirely separate Open Journals Systems software) and a separate instance of Figshare to manage its research data and software (as part of the federation of Dutch technical universities). There is also a platform for delivering open educational courses . Can all the formats these platforms deliver be combined under one infrastructure?

– The same goes for TU Delft’s heritage collection (s). While such digitised collections will always require a dedicated interface, can they make use of a shared underlying infrastructure?

TU Delft Heritage Landing Page

– And a more practical question: which current infrastructure(s) is the most suitable to deliver on all these questions? Open source solutions like DSpace, Islandora, Dataverse, Samvera, VIVO, OJS or InvenioRDM. Managed solutions like Tind. Or commercial offerings such as Figshare?

There are some other resource available to help with these questions. The Next Generation Repositories report by the Coalition of Open Access Repositories lays down some important principles that can provide a foundation for answering the questions above.

But the largely technical principles in this report should not disguise the fact that the strategic direction needs to be worked out first. What does the library (and by extension the university) want from its repository?

Master thesis projects

Finding a thesis project.

For students participating in the TU Delft computer science and embedded systems master’s programs we have several openings for research thesis projects. Usually these topics can also be adjusted to fit in the scope of a BSc research project.

All MSc projects are aligned with our research. They often are connected to one of our ongoing research projects , but we also frequently use MSc projects to explore new research directions. Projects can be conducted at:

  • TU Delft in our own research labs, in close collaboration with our postdocs and PhD students
  • Industry (as part of an internship), usually with companies (in The Netherlands or abroad) with which we have an ongoing research collaboration (e.g. ING, SIG, Adyen, ATOS, XWiki, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Infotron, JetBrains, …)
  • Other (international) universities – we have a rich network of academic friends around the world.

If you study at a different university and you would like to write a research master thesis in the context of one of the SERG projects, you should ask your own university supervisor to contact us. We have limited places available, but are always interested in new research opportunities.

SERG Supervisors

You can make an appointment with one of the SERG group members to see what projects are currently open, or you can propose your own project, provided there is a clear connection with the research we conduct at our labs. You can contact the following persons for more information:

Composing your Study Program

If you plan to conduct your MSc project at SERG, you will need to include at least two of the CS MSc courses SERG teaches in your IEP (Individual Exam Program). We strongly recommend you to follow our software architecture, software analytics, or software testing and reverse engineering courses. Besides our own software engineering related courses, when choosing the electives in your program you can consider including courses in such areas as machine learning, computational intelligence, data science, compiler construction, distributed systems, or security.

Optionally, you can start your research with a 7-8 week literature survey (IN4306, 10EC). This assignment is concluded with a report containing an overview of the state-of-the-art in a particular branch of research.

Proposing your Own Project

Under certain conditions it can also be possible to propose your own project. In those cases it is important to

  • Study a number of existing MSc theses .
  • Identify an ongoing research project to which your proposal is connected.

In particular you need to carefully think about the research component of your proposal, and have a clear idea on why your proposal is novel – it should advance the world’s knowledge in software engineering. If you wish to pursue this route it is advisable to select and contact a possible supervisor as early as possible.

Writing your Thesis

Once you’ve found your project and your supervisor, we recommend that you start writing as soon as possible: Devise a table of content, and fill in details as you go.

To write your thesis you need to make use of our MSc Thesis Template .
