Punjab in History and Historiography: An Introduction

This volume seeks to consider the notion of Punjabiyat , a loosely defined term often used to describe a sentiment of belonging or attachment to Punjab and/or the foundations of a shared, cross-religious, cross-caste, cross-class culture. Is there an ‘idea of Punjab’ or ‘ideas of Punjab’ that help ground—as Punjabi—people from the region, now scattered across the globe? Or that connect those in Indian and Pakistani Punjab, divided by what is for most of them an impermeable border? In other words, despite political, social, religious—indeed, historical—differences, are there notions of Punjabiyat /Punjabiness that constitute Punjab as a region conceptually in history, culture, and practice? The essays in this volume, through their careful analyses of aspects of Punjabi social, cultural, political, and religious history, taken collectively suggest that there are, indeed.

Part of the impetus for this collection is that volumes on Punjabi culture/s or histories—especially of its modern period—have not been commonplace in academic circles. One is more likely to come across titles that delve into specific aspects of its culture or people, for instance works on ‘Sikh religion’ or the ‘Sikh people’, ‘Islamic identity’ or ‘Hindu reform’ in their Punjabi regional context. Such endeavours are entirely valid and reasonable, and perhaps even necessary, but it is difficult to comprehend the elision if not erasure of Punjabi identity from academic writing. Given that it has been easier for diasporic Punjabis to evoke a much wider and an inclusive Punjabi identity than it has been for Punjabis residing in India or Pakistan, one wonders if this elision is yet another result of the political divisions that have marked Punjab’s twentieth-century history? Have these divisions, whether of 1947 or the postcolonial period, made other identity markers more apt or emotionally more satisfying than the idea of belonging/originating/associating with a region? Or could it be that Punjabi identity is particularly open to appropriation, and even incorporation within other identities—for instance Sikh identity in Indian Punjab?

Impact of Usage of Social Networking Sites on PG Students of Central University of Punjab

The present study was conducted to explore the impact of Usage of Social Networking Sites on PG students of Central University of Punjab. The objectives of the study were to analyze the level of usage of social networking sites and comparing the usage of SNS between male, female, science and humanities PG students of Central University of Punjab. The total number of 200 students were selected by using stratified random sampling technique for the collection of data. Data were collected by using self-made questionnaire. The study found that the maximum number of PG Students of Central University of Punjab comes under moderate level of usage of Social Networking Sites. It was also revealed that there is no significant difference in the usage of Social Networking Sites among PG students of science and humanities streams. Furthermore there is no significant difference between usage of Social Networking Sites among male and female PG students of Central University of Punjab.

​ The purpose of this research study is to identify the impact of social networking sites on students: A case study of Central University of Jammu. Questionnaire was designed to find out impact of social networking sites on students. Variable identified are age, gender, education, social influence and academic performance. 200 questionnaires were randomly distributed among the students of Central University of Jammu. 187(93.5%) responses were collected and analyzed for the study. The findings revealed that majority of respondents were Female 113(60.43%) while, 161(86.10%) respondents were postgraduate. This study aims to find out the use of social networking sites (SNSs) for educational purposes among the postgraduate students at the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh. The study selects descriptive survey method and questionnaire tools for gathering the data. This study was carried out to investigate the use of social networking sites among the undergraduate students of UAS, Dharwad students at the College of Agriculture, Vijayapur. In the context of today’s electronic media, Data was collected using a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire. A number of 160 undergraduate students were randomly selected. The study found that a majority of the students were aware of social networking sites and use these sites for friendly communication. The response rate is 65.62 % the findings revealed that WhatsApp 4.24 Mean value and YouTube 3.49 purposes of using social networking sites. Use of social networking sites are very fairly from Hostel/Room with a mean value of 4.31 SD being 0.84 the majority of scoring 74(73.27%) different types of Mobile Devices to use Social Networking Sites.

This study was carried out to investigate the availability and the use of social networking sites and its effects on undergraduate students of National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur, India. Social networking sites have come to mean individuals, using the Internet and web application to communicate in previously impossible ways. This is largely the result of a culture-wide paradigm shift in the uses and possibilities of the internet itself. The objectives of the study are to find the level of student's awareness of social networking sites, examine purpose of using social networking sites, the effects associated to social networking sites, the average time spent on social networking sites and to identify the relevant of social networking sites to students The study adopted the descriptive survey research design which was employed to derive responses from a sample size of 200 undergraduate students of National Institute of Ayurveda who were selected via random sampling techniques. Data were collected from this population using questionnaire. Out of the 200 questionnaires distributed 180 respondents completed and returned the questionnaire representing 90% response rate. The result of the study reveals that mostly all the student were using the social networking sites in interaction with friends and families.

In this information age the social networking sites has become one of the crucial tools for the librarian and patrons for communication. Social networking sites help the users to interact with the different people and it increases the social awareness and other information among the users. The study adopted survey method for data collection, therefore the questionnaire method will be use to evaluate use of social networking sites of students. In this study, data collected from 250 students by Structural questionnaires on their use of social networking sites. The collected data were analyzed using different statistical tools. The study investigates the use of social networking sites by students of Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic.A descriptive survey and simple random sampling technique were used to select the respondents from the Department of Library and Information Science and Mass Communication in the College of Arts and Liberal Studies. A structured questionnaire was used as an instrument for data collection and Microsoft Excel Application was used as a tool in analyzing the data. The findings of the study reveal that the students are familiar with conventional social media networking sites such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, and have little familiarity with academic social networking sites like google scholar and Researchgate. the students use social networking sites daily to keep in touch with friends and family members, share pictures, videos, and share information for academic activities. It was discovered that the majority of the students spend two hours and above surfing on the sites. The students have positive as well as negative perceptions of the use of the social network. The major problems encountered in the use of social networking sites are time-consuming and a high cost of internet subscriptions. The study recommends that the management of the institutions and the library should organize training programs on the use of SNS to the students especially academic social networks where people share current research and discussion on various disciplines.
