Principles of Management – Course Reflection Term Paper
The course enabled me to develop a deeper understanding of the principles of business management. It equipped me with the requisite knowledge to analyze the specific situation in management. It also provided me with an in-depth understanding of contemporary tools in handling overall management tasks. The course had clearly spelled out outcomes and competencies that all the students had to acquire. These outcomes enable me to quickly evaluate and gauge my competency in various areas that the course touched on.
At the end of the course, I was competent in reading and appraising written text as well as understanding various rhetorical strategies. I was also able to comprehend ethical issues in management and learned how to resolve moral conflicts. These constituted the stipulated liberal outcome and competencies.
Other specific outcomes and competencies involved knowledge of business management skills. In my opinion, these competencies provided the most important aspect of business management. I specifically gathered the following aspect of business management with regard to these expected outcomes: the ability to defend ethical guide for evaluating business practice; a clear understanding of decision-making models and ability to employ them; improved research skills both library and web-based; improved business communication skills both written and oral.
In addition to the above-mentioned skills, by the end of the semester, I had a thorough understanding of the major functions of management including the ability to translate the impact of cultural diversity, technology, and external environment on management decisions. I was equally competent in various leadership styles and was able to exhibit these styles in an actual business enterprise. I also learned the importance of cooperation and the advantages of operating as a team to solve problems.
The other core aspects of this course, which I undertook, were two book reviews and a career assessment exercise. In the book review, I critically appraise and summarize two contemporary business-related books. The first was, “Fun Is Good: How to Create Joy and Passion in Your Workplace and Career” by Mike Veeck and Pete Williams, and the second, “The First-time Manager” by Loren Belker and Gary Topchik. In both the books, I summarized the structures and the content, capturing specifically the following key aspects: the information conveyed by the author in the book; the organization of the book; and the depicted theme.
In my opinion, the book “Fun Is Good: How to Create Joy and Passion in Your Workplace and Career” provides valuable information, particularly to managers. The authors argue that success is not just guaranteed by strict discipline, research, and planning but rather work should be able to bring pleasure and pride to the employees for optimal performance. In the final analysis, I gathered that the book provided a different perspective on running a business. It is therefore an invaluable piece of literature for those wishing to start new enterprises or even those in running businesses who wish to change their management style for better performance of their employees, and consequently increased revenues.
The second book, “The first-time manager” in my opinion, is very important for people wishing to start careers in management and even top managers wishing to refresh their skills. The conversation format in the book makes it easy to read and follow. I would therefore recommend the book to all audiences but more specifically to students who target careers in management.
The career assessment component of this course was the most enjoyable. It provided me with an opportunity to self-search and know exactly who I am. This in essence enabled me to assess my strength and weaknesses and therefore, help me in determining the right career choice. I used various evaluation matrices in this career assessment to gauge my personality.

The Principles of Management Reflection Paper
The most fundamentally important ideas in management are leadership, personality, motivation, decision-making and communication. In my experience, a good and effective manager or director is first and foremost a leader. A well-rounded manager or director has a personable personality and can engage and motivate a multitude of different personalities. In my experience, well-rounded managers and directors also have the ability to assess situations and people and make well-supported and smart decisions. Being a leader with a great personality who can motivate and make decisions goes hand.
By doing so, the daily goals fall into place and things get accomplished much easier. Someone who is a true leader in an organization sets the example for others to follow. Subsequently they bring the organization to a better place by doing so, and more or less change the personality of the organization. Personality is defined as “a unique combination of emotional thought and behavior patterns that affect how a person reacts to situations and interacts with others.” (Robbins, Decenzo, Coulter, 2001. P227)
A person in a position of management and/or a leadership must possess a personality that is adaptable and personable. The emotional patterns of a strong leader are positive and motivating. The leader/manager must keep the mood of him or herself, everyone around him or her, and the organization positive. Emotions sometimes can get the best of us, but someone in the leader/manager role must be able to rise above each situation and in a timely manner without showing or projecting it on others.
The thought patterns of a strong leader/manager are focused and detail oriented. As all organizations have goals and missions, a leader/manager is focused on seeing those goals and missions through. After all, the fulfillment of those goals and missions are why the leader/manager is there in the first place. Lastly, in the idea of personality, the behavior patterns of a leader/manager are positive and motivating. .

Reflective Essay This class has been an overall fantastic learning experience. It has a very different approach to all other classes I have been taking this semester and, as such, has offered a new, innovative way for learning. I think this has been key to the knowledge and insights I have internalized throughout the semester. In addition to all the concepts we have dissected, this class also focuses on interpersonal communication, cooperation, and problem- solving between peers. These are all qualities which importance cannot be stressed enough when operating within a professional business environment. In this essay, I will attempt to dissect some of the key concepts and insights I have come to learn through the lens of this class and its’ experience.
In the first class of the semester, we discussed different organizational structures and their corresponding effects on an organization’s output, efficiency, and prosperity. It was interesting to learn the immense impact different organizational structures can have on day- to-day tasks being performed by employees on all levels. The task where we were asked to try to set up a coherent organizational structure of our own was key to propelling my personal understanding of the concept and its’ contents. Through this class, we also got to learn about the Star Model, which provided additional information on advantages and disadvantages of different organizational designs. In accordance with what we covered in this class I know that I will be better equipped when trying to break into the field I want to work in. This is true
regardless of profession, since understanding how the organizational structure of a workplace functions is key to attaining the knowledge how to operate on an individual level.
The same can be said about the class which explored the concepts of business analysis and the various tools that comes along with it. This lecture laid out the essentials for a successful strategic analysis by pressing on the significance of mission statements for all organizations. A well-thought-out mission statement has many advantages, but the most noticeable one is how it gets everyone within the organization to understand what they are working for. Further, we also touched on a few basic concepts of strategic management, such as different types of competitive advantages as well as how to create them. There are several ways to create a competitive advantage, including technology, cost and quality, knowledge and speed, barriers to entry, and financial resources. Two of the most common ways for firms to create competitive advantages are through lower costs or better quality. In this class, we had another group assignment, in which me and my group set out to dive deeper into value chain analysis. With the help of this tool, firms can analyze their primary and support activities to reduce costs or increase differentiation.
This tool, along with the many other that we got to learn about through the group presentations, are of remarkable importance to all businesses and their successes. Thus, learning about it was very helpful, and having to put together a short presentation on our own helped further in internalizing the information given to us since we had to relay it to our peers. Not only was this a great opportunity to further improve our communicative abilities, since we had to present a complicated subject in an understandable and pedagogic way, as it also made me realize how different concepts can be implemented in the real business-world. In the workplace, such presentations or meetings where information has to be relayed between different teams or groups are extremely common, so the chance to get a glimpse into what that might look like is something I am grateful for.
are not always as hard as they might seem at first glance, and I personally found this advice very helpful, as I think it will help me when I am put problem-solving situations throughout my professional career.
The topics covered in class five really caught my eyes and interest. Here, we focused on Process Redesign and its’ implications. Through the lecture, emphasis was put on the optimal ways to reengineer processes with some real-world examples. In addition, we did an in-class assignment which consisted of creating a process for a robot to tie its’ shoes. What this exercise showed us was how in-depth you really need to go when creating a totally new process for people who do not know a lot, if anything at all, about the subject matter. This is especially true when designing new processes for an entire organization. You cannot overlook things or expect everyone to understand what you meant with any statement and, similarly, you cannot take anything for granted. This is because everyone interprets vaguely expressed material differently, which poses a big problem to creating processes. As such, no detail can be left out when designing a completely new process, as clarity and standardization needs to be expressed down to the most basic activity for it to be incorporated smoothly. I believe this knowledge will be of help in my life, as it illuminated just how much attention to detail must be incorporated to any process redesign.
Another class I found particularly interesting was class six, in which we reviewed and discussed ethics and social responsibility. According to me, the two most important aspects of this class was the presentations we did on real-world examples and the article we read. My group got the opportunity to do a presentation on Walmart de Mexico. The firm’s dilemma was to choose how the company best proceed with meeting their social responsibility targets, as the company had pledged to meet ambitious goals, including reduced waste in its own and its’ suppliers’ operations. What this example showed is that ethics is rarely a black-or-white issue, as individuals and organizations often face dilemmas.
This was a realization which I will try to keep close in mind in my life going forward. Maybe we should not always be so quick to judge people, as we do not know what circumstances lead them to the situation or decision we see them execute.
The article we read discussed the three psychological dynamics that often lead to individuals and organizations crossing ethical lines. This was a very helpful piece of information, which I believe will help me avoid being put in situations where my behavior does not reflect who I truly am. I will make sure to look out for signs of what the article deems moral capture, which are brief moments when you do not recognize yourself, as well as any other indications that I am subjecting my own personal agency to the deviant and destructive norms of the collective. Groupthink is a scary phenomenon and can lead to detrimental outcomes if found in the wrong circumstances.
Lastly, I would like to highlight the class in which we dissected teams and their importance to an organization’s structure, efficiency, and culture. The in-class assignment brought a real-world example of teams and their functions to us. In the discussion, we were brought into a scenario where we had to make decisions together, as a team. This was very helpful in grasping the concepts of team-work and well-functioning teams, as we could clearly see how different opinions and viewpoints need to be considered, especially when opinions were widely spread among team members. As time passed, it became clear that decisions should not always be based on majority rule.
In our assignment, it was obvious that there was a big gap in knowledge around the subject matter. Some members were much more knowledgeable on the topic than others. As such, it made sense to put more weight on those people’s opinion than the people that self- admittedly were not the most knowledgeable on this specific topic. This is something I believe will help me in both my career and day-to-day life. We are facing hundreds if not
