Not only are you expected to speak in front of all those people, but there’s a whole speech to write first!

Fortunately, the process can be relatively straightforward as long you leave enough time to prepare (that means starting weeks rather than days or hours before the big day) and have a solid process to follow.

Use the steps below to make writing your speech as painless as possible.

Step 1: Do Your Homework

Before starting on your speech make sure you know enough about the format for the day and exactly what people will expect of you.

Although you may already be familiar with most of the details, a quick phone or email to your daughter should help fill in any remaining details.

Here are a few questions to ask:

• Who are the speakers, and in what order will they speak? (Remember: Father of the Bride, the Groom, then Best Man is the rule, but this wedding may be different!)
• Where do the speeches fall in the wedding schedule? (e.g., after the main course of the wedding breakfast but before dessert.)
• Will there be a separate “MC” (e.g., provided by the venue) to introduce the speakers? If not, will to do that as part of your role? you be expected

For capturing your ideas you can keep things “old school” and use pen and paper or open a blank document on your computer.

3) Pick a Target Structure

Decide on a basic structure for your speech, at least to use as a starting point.

If you opt for the latter, consider the best way to organize the stories that will form the heart of your speech. You have several options here:

• Chronological : tell your stories in the order that they happened, from early life to adulthood.
• Roles : pick stories that illustrate specific roles the Bride plays in her life, e.g., as a daughter, as a sister, as a friend, etc.
• Qualities : pick stories that illustrate certain qualities of her you want to highlight, e.g., her loyalty, her sense of , her determination, etc. humour

Once you have a target structure either write corresponding headings on a piece of paper or type them into a blank document on your computer.

Tip: If you’re using the Post-It approach, write each heading on a separate piece of paper and then add the notes that correspond to that part of your speech.

4) Organize Your Thoughts

Using your chosen structure to guide you, start organizing your initial thoughts according to the major sections of the speech.

If you’re working on paper, that means copying some ideas that arose during the brainstorming stage under the correct headings. If you’re working on your computer, you can cut and paste them in.

It’s natural that not every idea will make the final cut, so don’t try to cram everything in and you may also find that you need to brainstorm more ideas to fill in any gaps in your structure.

Once your ideas are in place, it’s time to flesh them out a little and also move things around for the best flow.

5) Write a First Draft

Once you have a solid structure for your speech with enough ideas under each of the major sections, start writing out the text of your speech in full.

Even if you don’t intend to learn your speech word for word, it’s still useful to write it out like this to get a feel for how everything hangs together when you get into the detail.

Again you have the option of writing it out longhand or typing it up on your computer. Unless you have a strong preference for paper, now’s a good time to move to an electronic version of your speech because you’ll find it easier to move things around and make other edits as you develop your speech.

Tip: Don’t spend too long at this stage working on the exact phrasing for you points, just try to create a speech that flows roughly from beginning to end and sounds like a complete speech instead of a list of bullet points.

6) Read It Out Loud and Revise

Once you have a version of your speech that seems to work well on the page, with the basic ideas flowing smoothly from one to the next, it’s important to read it out loud.

That’s because a common mistake is to assume that a speech that reads smoothly in your mind will sound equally smooth when delivered aloud.

So read your speech out loud at a realistic speed and notice if you’re tripping over any specific words or sentences. You’ll be surprised at how often sentences which seem to flow nicely on the page turn into a treacherous tongue-twisters when spoken out loud.

Make a note of any stumbling points and then revise your text to eliminate any potential problems.

Remember, this is an iterative process: reading your speech, making adjustments and then reading again. You should find that the changes get smaller and smaller until you naturally home in on a final version.

Once you have a version you’re happy with, consider reading it in front of a trusted friend or family member to get an external perspective and making any final revisions.

And then you’re done!

Note: During this phase it’s a good idea to grab a stopwatch and check how long your speech runs. Be sure to pause between major sections and allow a little time for audience reactions. Then consider if you need to expand or trim your speech based on the length.

A strong end is key to the overall success of the speech and helps draw a line under your words and the start of the next speech.

So, make sure you have a really good finishing sentence, followed by a clear call to the guests to stand and toast. What's more, you want your speech to delight the couple of the hour and be as appealing to your group of friends as it to the newlyweds' grandparents. All in all, it's a tough task.

Before you panic, know that we're here to help. Every great wedding speech has one thing in common: the right flow. Factor in these guidelines to help you find your own organic rhythm.

Open With a Statement or Question

Don't lead with a joke or a reference to how nervous you are. "The goal is to engage your audience, not make it a boring one-way message," says award-winning motivational speaker Jaime Pfeffer . "You'll lose them if you do this."

Introduce Yourself

After your opener, introduce yourself, says Fallon Carter , a wedding planner, even designer, and professional speaker. "A lot of times, people don't know who is speaking, and they don't know their relationship to the bride or the groom," she says. "It's really important to identify yourself, so make sure you've prepared something."

Address Your Audience

As speaker and life strategy coach Mark Black, CSP , points out, focusing on yourself only enhances nerves. "Instead, concentrate on your audience and how you want them to feel. This will help you to speak from the heart, allowing your speech to do what it's supposed to do: Make the couple feel special while also engaging the audience."

Focus on a Few Points

Seasoned speaker Susan Bender Phelps, CEO of Odyssey Mentoring & Leadership , says her top guideline is to select one to three aspects of the newlyweds that you love and appreciate, along with no more than three short stories to illustrate each of these points (or that one point). "The simple, succinct story or stories where the bride and groom are the hero will work best." This is an excellent way to structure your speech and keep your message focused.

How Long Wedding Speeches Should Be

The ideal length for a speech is three to five minutes, with five minutes being the absolute maximum you should speak for. That's it. "I’ve never been to a wedding where anyone said, 'That was a great wedding, but the best man speech was just too short and that  ruined  it,'" says David Litt , the speechwriter for former President Barack Obama and author of Thanks, Obama .

Carter agrees: "I always say anywhere between two and five minutes—and no more than five minutes," she says. "You want to keep things short and sweet." It's just as important to keep in mind when the speech will take place when determining length, since toasts are often timed with meal courses: "Be mindful of how long a course generally takes or how long it takes people to eat," Carter adds, noting that most courses last between 15 and 20 minutes and that several speeches have to fit inside each window. "If there are other people speaking, you want to be mindful and give them space."

Now that you've established the right framework for your words, take note of these essential tips for acing the delivery from a few speaking pros.

Rehearse Regularly

The better prepared you are, the more confident you'll be and the better your speech will be, says author and professional speaker Barry Maher . A good rule of thumb is to practice the speech enough that you can remember the points you want to make and the order in which you want to make them. That way, you can look out to the crowd and make eye contact every so often.

Record Yourself Practicing

Use your phone to take a video of yourself practicing, suggests Kate Kenfield , speaker and sex educator. "It can be a little uncomfortable to watch yourself, but you'll be able to identify distracting mannerisms, such as the verbal pauses 'um,' 'uh,' and 'like'." It's also a good idea to practice your speech in front of someone else. "A second opinion can help you craft your piece and make it that much stronger," she says.

Don't forget body language! Rehearse the speech in front of a mirror and notice things like your facial expression, eye contact, and hand position.

Avoid Alcohol

Although it may be tempting to look for some liquid courage, alcohol definitely won't do you any favors, warns keynote speaker Amy Morin , author of 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do . "It may cause you to slur your speech and forget your lines, so wait until after your toast to celebrate," she advises. If you need a drink to loosen up the nerves or can't refrain from participating in a toast without being rude, stick to one glass of Champagne before you address the crowd.

Use Nerves to Your Advantage

A little nervousness can actually liven up your speech. "I get worried if I'm not a little nervous," says Maher. "I'll actually try to make myself a little tense to get my energy level up." The key is to harness that energy and communicate it in a positive, genuine way; tensing up to the point that you forget your words or panic won't make for a great presentation.

Be Yourself

Keep in mind that you're not putting on a show, only sharing your personal perspective. Trying too hard to force the funny can yield the opposite of the desired effect, cautions Matt Dalley, co-founder of Simply Eloped . "I've noticed that keeping it short and sweet, heartfelt and warm, and coming across as authentic and focused on the couple is something we are all capable of and generates some very wonderful moments," he says.

Never Embarrass the Newlyweds

It's a wedding toast, not a roast. While this should go without saying, keep the bachelor or bachelorette party jokes out of it, and remember that grandma and possibly a few colleagues are in the audience, notes Laurie Battaglia , a keynote speaker and workplace strategist. "It's okay to look back at childhood and refer to something funny, but ask yourself if you'd like 200-plus of your closest friends knowing that story about you."

Use Your Notes

Reading your speech straight from a piece of paper is a big no-no. However, having a couple of note cards handy is encouraged. "You're likely to be nervous, excited, and exhausted, which can make you forget your lines," explains Morin. "The audience won't care if you glance at your notes. In fact, there's a good chance they won't even notice."

Need some inspiration? Ask yourself these questions to get the brainstorming process going.

• Who will speak before you? After you? How will this affect the content of your toast? (Perhaps you want to include a reference to their speech, thank them for an introduction, or introduce the next speaker).
• Is there someone you should thank for making the event possible and inviting you to speak?
• What would you want to hear in this speech if you were in the audience?
• Is there a favorite story or memory that the couple would want you to share with their friends and family?

"Hi, I’m Maya, the bride’s older sister . With Lucy being three years younger, we fell right into our respective roles as sister-rivals growing up. We constantly fought over stolen clothes, monopolizing the phone back when landlines were a thing, and what boy band to blare from the car speakers. I’m still Team Backstreet Boys while Lucy is forever indebted to NSYNC.

Looking back on those memories, I should have stepped up and granted Lucy permission to wear my favorite sweater for picture day, to hand her the phone once in a while, and to let her play, 'Bye Bye Bye.' Now is the place to pull in a few funny and poignant memories of your daughter. As one of the people who has known her the longest, you get to share some insights about her and her impact on your life.

Talk about how you felt when she was born, the first time a boy looked at her, or the day she got her first job. Mention what she does that makes you proud now and any relevant stories about her as an adult.

Also, take a moment to recognize your wife’s role in raising your daughter to be the beautiful woman she has become. Share a common trait you love about both of them. Tie your daughter’s spouse into the story by remarking about how you hope they will cherish this trait as much as you do.

That's why we caught up with Balraj Arunasalam, president of Toastmasters International , an organization that specializes in communication and leadership development. Not only is he an expert in delivering an incredible speech under any circumstances, but he's also in the process of drafting a reception toast for his own daughter's wedding. He was kind enough to share some tips on the process, offering practical advice that can help even the shyest dad have his moment to shine.

Wait to Write

Arunasalam suggests dads first focus on what they want to say rather than worry about how they want to say it. "Take time two to three weeks prior to the ceremony to write several thoughts on the occasion," he says. "Make sure you have all your thoughts together first, then play around with the words."

Use Your Expertise

If you're not sure where to start, begin with what you know best: your daughter . "Add your favorite memories... when her first smile captured your heart, a first day of school, and so forth," says Arunasalam. From there, he suggests hitting foolproof beats like welcoming the spouse to your family and wishing the bride and groom a happy, prosperous life together.

Practice Your Speech

Once you have your words down, practice, practice, practice. And don't underestimate the power of reading it aloud in front of a mirror. What sounds good in your head may trip you up when you hear it spoken, so be sure to get comfortable well before the reception.

Writing – let alone actually delivering – your all-important father of the bride speech may seem daunting and, with all eyes on you, it’s understandable you’d be nervous. But you needn’t be because, once the speech is written and the nerves are subdued, it’s actually a wonderful moment that can be a real highlight, especially for your darling daughter.

The father of the bride speech is, usually, the first of the wedding speeches to be delivered, usually towards the end of the main meal . You want to enjoy the moment and you want your daughter – and your entire family – to be proud of your performance, not embarrassed by it.

The hardest part of writing a good father of the bride speech is getting started.

A good tip is to break the speech down into headings. Under each heading, jot down some notes, ideas and emotions then expand on them.

Think about how you felt when your daughter was born, what it was like raising her as a child, some of her big milestones such as a graduation or a significant birthday. Then, attempt to put your emotions onto words.

As the speech starts to take shape, practice reading it out loud. Take note of how long it takes to read each section and try not to speak for longer than about five to seven minutes.

Part 1: The introduction

But keep it clean.

People are expecting a mature gentleman, not a larrikin – that’s the best man’s role!

If joking is not your thing, simply start by introducing yourself and mentioning how beautiful the bride looks.

Say a few words about the wedding day so far, and how perfectly everything has run and, if you have a few funny stories from the lead up to the wedding or the early part of the wedding day itself, you can include those at the start of the speech.

Part 2: Welcome the guests

This is where your role as the father of the bride kicks in. Be sure to thank everyone for coming and give special thanks to those who have travelled to attend the celebrations.

Don’t forget to thank those who helped in the planning and organisation of your daughter’s big day and make sure you write down any names that you feel deserve a mention during this part of the speech.

Also, mention any significant family members or friends who are absent and, if you feel comfortable, those who may recently have passed away.

Part 3: Now, it’s all about your daughter

This is the highlight of any father of the bride speech – and everyone’s waiting to hear it.

It’s not often you get to discuss your daughter’s many qualities and achievements so publicly, so make the most of it and indulge yourself. Make sure you compliment her; tell her how wonderful she looks and how proud you are of her. Don’t worry, it’s OK to gush about your darling daughter.

Try to talk a little about your daughter’s early years, perhaps tell a funny story or two about when she was like growing up. Feel free to tease her about some of the things she has done but be kind and don’t say anything that you know will really embarrass her.

Tell a story that reveals her personality: how strong, tough, creative, kind she is, perhaps? Or her love of animals or sports.

Finally, talk about when she met her new husband, making sure you tell the story in a positive way!

This will lead you nicely into the next part.

Part 4: And, don’t forget the son in law or daughter in law

Here, it is customary for the father of the bride to welcome the groom (or, in the case of a same-sex wedding, the other bride) into his family, and to express his happiness at the new connection between the two families that the marriage will bring.

Talk about your first encounter with the groom. Even if the first impression was not positive, it may be fun to mention it, as long as you follow up with how fond of him you are now – and say it

Depending on your relationship with your new son-in-law, it’s probably fine to poke (a little) fun at him, and to joke about what he is getting himself in for marrying your daughter.

Other anecdotes that work well include the first time you realised your daughter was in love with him and your reaction to their engagement.

Think of positive qualities about the groom that will make him a good husband and ways that he has made your daughter happy.

Part 5: Words of wisdom

At the end of your father of the bride speech, you should congratulate the happy couple on a wonderful wedding, and express your confidence in their future happiness together.

Traditionally, your closing should also contain some words of wisdom about life and marriage. This might include tips on how to have a happy marriage and things that are important in life.

This could be humorous or tongue-in-cheek.

Part 6: Toast

Finally, propose a toast to the bride and groom and have all the guests raise their glasses to the happy couple.

A worried bride has told her dad he can no longer give a speech on her wedding day after the content of his speech was revealed - leaving the family feuding and the bride torn about what to do

A bride told her dad it's "her wedding not his" after awkwardly telling him he cannot give a speech at her wedding - leaving to a family fall out.

While a wedding day is such a happy occasion, filled with love and joy, it can typically be very emotional for a bride or groom's parents. Those opting for traditional weddings like to put their parents on the top table, and more than often the father of the bride gives a speech. But some may be worried about what their dad will say - from revealing secrets, to talking for too long, or getting overly emotional.

One bride is not worried about what her dad will say about her, but what he will say about his wife and the bride's mother. The wife-to-be, who wishes to remain unnamed, took to Reddit recently and explained that the dad showed his sister - the bride's aunt - the speech and she "knew the speech would not sit well" with the bride due to the majority of the content being about his wife.

After confessing his plan to his daughter, the dad was shocked and dubbed it "unfair" when she stripped away his chance to give a speech at the wedding - if it included the content he had planned. The bride explained: "So in this speech he already wrote he talks a lot about how his wife is the love of his life, how amazing she is, etc. It's very similar to the speech he gave at their vow renewal 10 years ago.

"He hasn't shied away from expressing in front of me and to me that he never loved anyone like he loved his wife, how all his past relationships pale in comparison." The problem is that those previous relationships include his first wife - the bride's mother, who sadly died when the bride was just eight years old.

The bride added: "The vow renewal was held on my 18th birthday and I got to celebrate my birthday by hearing dad talk about how mom meant nothing because his second wife was so much better. the speech he wrote for my wedding had a lot of this content from what my aunt heard from my dad and read herself.

"She knew on my wedding day the last thing I needed to hear was how much he adores his wife when he does so in a way that basically said my mom meant nothing to him." Annoyed, the bride told her dad that she wasn't pleased nor would she give him permission to use that speech at her wedding.

She continued: "I told him I didn't want him to use my wedding to praise his wife. He said she means the world to us so why would I say that. I told him she means the world to him. But she pales in comparison to my mom who meant the world to me and still does."

The dad reportedly called his daughter "sensitive" and said it appeared like the bride "didn't care about" his wife. Even more frustrated by his reaction, the bride commented: "Dad told me to be reasonable and the parents of the bride and groom typically say something. I told him nothing he had to say had a place at my wedding.

"This is mine and my fiancée's wedding, not his. I told him to get married again if all he wants to do is praise his wife. But it was not happening at mine." The bride's step mother called her "crying", she claims, and her dad told her to "grow up".

As the family have been left feuding, the bride took to Reddit to ask for advice - thousands of people shared their thoughts. One individual said: "Ask dad to look up what a speech at a wedding is supposed to be. It's a speech from the parent, how their child is grown, starting their own life and how loved they are."

Another added: "I would make sure to have him monitored at the wedding, that's if you decide not to disinvite him and his wife. What he wants to do is so incredibly insensitive and tacky." Suggesting what the bride should say to her dad, another wrote: "Tell him he has a choice. He can come as a guest only and forget the idea that he is giving a speech or he can stay home."
