And on a Sunday morning, we visited our grandmother. And finally, we went to the church in the afternoon. Overall that was an amazing time with my grandma and in the church. So I have visited a zoo, church, and my grandma on a weekend. That’s why this weekend was so much interesting to me.

How Do You Spend Your Weekends? IELTS Speaking (10 Example Answers)

You might be asked about your weekends in part one of your IELTS Speaking test. A common question would be, “How do you spend your weekends?” or “What do you usually do on weekends?”

In this post, we’ll look at how to answer this question really well, with 10 good example answers ( go straight to the answers here ).  

At the Weekend vs On the Weekend

In the US, we usually say ‘on the weekend’ and in the UK we usually say ‘at the weekend.’  

Both are good English but it’s more common to say ‘on the weekend’ because US English is more commonly spoken around the world.  

What You Can Talk About

Simply explain what you usually do at the weekends. It doesn’t have to be very exciting or interesting. You might mention that you:

•   Catch up on sleep (have a ‘lie in,’ which means staying in bed for longer)
•   Spend time with your kids
•   Meet up with friends
•   Relax at home watching TV, playing games, reading books
•   Do household chores
•   Run errands
•   Go grocery shopping
•   Do a hobby
•   Exercise  
•   Attend English classes
•  Do overtime work
•   Do your homework
•   Go on trips  
•   Anything else that you do at the weekend

Tip: Use Frequency Phrases

This kind of question is a good opportunity to talk about frequency (how often you do something) and use some interesting frequency words or phrases.  

To talk about how often you do something, you can say:

•   Every now and then
•   Every other weekend
•   On occasion
•   Most weekends
•   I’m in the habit of
•   More often than not
•   Once in a while

Keep It Simple and Fluent

In part one, there’s no need to try very hard to use advanced vocabulary and grammar.  

Part one is only to warm you up. So the best thing you can do to impress the examiner is to speak quickly, without hesitation.  

This means trying to be fluent . And it’s easier to be fluent if you don’t slow down while trying to think of clever vocabulary.

In part two, you will have more time to think about your answer. So save your advanced vocabulary for then.  

Use the Three-Step YES Method

You also don’t want to say too much in part one. Your answers should be short and sweet (about 10 to 20 seconds is enough).  

To help you give the right kind of part-one answer, follow the three-step YES Method. Just say:

•   Y our answer (one or two things you do on the weekends)
•   E xplain your answer (say how often you do those things, why you do them, or describe them in more detail)
•   S top talking (fall quiet and wait patiently for the next question)

Chores and Errands

1. Well, most weekends, I do chores like cleaning the house, doing the laundry, and ironing my clothes. I also run errands, such as grocery shopping and collecting deliveries, and things like that.

2. I’m so busy during the week that I only really have a chance to meet my friends on the weekend. We usually play poker on Saturday night, and sometimes we have a big dinner together as well.  

3. I love to stay in shape, so at the weekend I wake up early and go jogging, the same as I do on weekdays. I also go to the gym for yoga classes and on Sunday afternoon I play tennis with my friends, more often than not.  

4. I work in a language school, so I have unusual working hours. Saturday and Sunday are actually my busiest days for work. My days off are usually Tuesday and Wednesday. That’s when I relax and do leisure activities.  

5. My teachers give me so much homework, which I have to finish over the weekend. If I do it really quickly, then I usually have some free time to hang out with my friends.

Take Kids to the Park

6. I’m in the habit of taking my kids to the park on the weekend if the weather’s nice. I’m very busy during the week, so the weekend is the only chance I get to spend quality time with them.  

7. I like getting out of the city on the weekend. Every other weekend I go hiking with a few friends. There are two mountains near my city, which are lovely to climb.  

English Classes

8. These days, I spend my weekends studying English. I attend at least four classes each weekend, and also do plenty of English exercises by myself at home.  

9. Usually, I try to visit an interesting place on the weekend with my family, like a museum or famous sight or a beautiful garden. And every now and then, we go on a day trip to another city nearby.  

Nothing Much

10. To be honest, I never want to do anything on the weekend. I just like to have a good long lie in to catch up on sleep. And then I stay at home, watching TV, chatting with friends, or playing phone games.

Walking along the shores of the beach calms my inner chaos. Occasionally, I collect seashells on the beach and bring them to my siblings. Most of these outdoor activities highly depend on how favorable the weather is.

I also make the effort to make calls to friends I am unable to physically visit and check in on. Sometimes, the walks alone can take up my whole afternoon.

Other times, I like listening to the music albums of my favorite artists as I stroll along the beach. When the weather is hot, I like swimming on the beach or joining my friends to go fishing in deeper waters. Recently, I tried scuba diving and I liked the experience. I hope that I get to try it again soon. The breathtaking view of the reef is amazing. 

Sometimes, the weather confines me indoors, but that does not mean I cannot have a good leisure break.

If I am having my leisure getaway indoors, I like trying out new recipes and different cuisines from all over the world. Being busy in the kitchen trying out new dishes is enjoyable, to say the least. The meals don’t always turn out the way I expect them to, but the experience is always fun for me. 

Alternatively, I like reading non-fiction books, particularly those that talk about historical events, while relaxing on the couch. I like doing this with soft jazz playing in the background as I peruse through the pages.

At times, I also go to the cinemas and theaters and catch up on the latest movies and plays with friends. There are times when I just want to stay at home and catch up on my go-to shows. I like playing dance games competitively with my brother especially when he is in town. Although he is a better dancer than I am, we both enjoy the dance and have fun together.

I also travel to Africa annually and go on safaris or hike in the mountains. The experience is always great – from socializing with people of different cultures to watching animal wildlife in their natural habitat. The days I spend in Africa leave indelible memories in my mind and encourage me to save up to return and experience more.

The activities I mentioned are just the tip of the iceberg. I really like making the most out of my leisure breaks. All these experiences and memories push me to invest in rest.

I don’t know how you make use of your spare time, but I hope that you are using it well. It could simply be a matter of engaging in your hobbies, spending time with loved ones, soaking in nature, or even reading books. As long as it makes you feel happy and recharged by the time the next week rolls in, it is worth doing.

There are a rare few who spend days in the library looking to expand their knowledge on a certain topic or subject of interest. Then there are the more fun, casual, and popular group activities, such as karaoke, cocktails, hotel stays, and pampering trips.

Why Is Leisure Time Important?

Making space to relax and the wind is essential in making sure you can still excel in the other areas of your life. People say that rest is actually a life strategy. You don’t necessarily rest because you are lazy and don’t want to deal with your obligations. You get to rest for the ultimate good of those activities. It almost seems counterproductive, for example, to do a catnap the night before a heavy deadline. But ten minutes of sleep can actually re-energize your brain and refuel your creative juices so that you can power through the night and finish that requirement. Getting those breathers for yourself also protects you from burnout, which is a common ailment in today’s busy world where everything demands your time and attention. It gives you fresh starts, especially when you feel uninspired and stuck.

The weekend is a time for rest, entertainment, and relaxation. Here I explain How I Spent the Weekend. Nothing extraordinary happened last weekend. It was just like any other ordinary weekend. After spending five days of assignments and extracurricular activities, we are allowed to take some time off to relax and unwind during the weekends. I got up later than usual on Saturday morning. After that, I had my bath and dinner. After dinner, I watched television until it was time for bed. After taking showers, we had our dinner and then after our evening prayers, we kids went to sleep.

During the weekends, I wake up very early as usual. But, I got up late on Sunday morning. For breakfast I had cornflakes with milk while listening to the radio. Then I spent the rest of the morning doing homework. On the other hand, Sundays are always a family affair. My daddy will take some time off from his busy schedule just to spend quality time with us. Again I took a nap after lunch. Then I finished up my homework. Then, every Sunday I would cook dinner for my family.

By the time I was done with the homework it was already evening. So I took a stroll around the neighborhood. It was a great feeling to be able to relax after all the homework had been done.

After dinner, I packed my books in my bag and went to bed early. I had to get enough sleep otherwise I would fall asleep in school the next day. Thus ended yet another weekend. In the weekends, some people go to visit their relatives or shopping or even go on trips, but some people don’t do anything .

HOW I USUALLY SPEND MY WEEKEND COMPOSITION

COMPOSITION: How I usually spend my weekend

I live in a big modern house with my parents in Badagry, a coastal town in Lagos State. The weekend falls on Saturday and Sundays. After five days of serious academic and extra-curricular activities at school, we are allowed to take some time off to relax and refresh ourselves during the weekend.

I always enjoy the weekends. This is because I always have enough time to do my all-time favourite activities during the time. At weekends, I wake to do my all-time favourite activities during the time. At weekends, I wake up very early. Every Saturday after enjoying a savory breakfast prepared by my mum, I would spend about twenty minutes doing my homework. Besides that, I would do some exercises to keep my body in good shape.

After having dinner at about 7 0’ clock at night, I watch TV and retire to bed at 9 0’clock. On Sunday after breakfast, we go to church. And after church we start preparing for Monday which marks the beginning of the working parts of the week.

I also play with my friends at weekends. My friends and I usually go out and make merry. Lizard hunting and cycling are our favorite activities.

We also play online games and have blast in the internet café.

     I live in a double-storey house which is located in Taman Buaya, Perak. in my state, the weekends fall on Saturday and Sundays. After spending five days of assignments and extra curricular activities, we are allowed to take some time off to relax and unwind during the weekends. I can do my all-time-favourite activities during the weekends.      During the weekends, I wake up very early as usual. After enjoying a leisurely and savoury breakfast prepared by my maid, I would spend ten minutes reading the entertainment column in the newspaper. Besides that, I would do some aerobic exercises to keep my body fit. Before I work out, I would cycle around my neighbourhood with my new mountainbike which was purchased by my father five days ago. When I am cycling, I will greet Tom, Dick and Harry although they are just the passerby.      By the o'clock on Saturdays, to keep in touch with my friends I will normally be on my way to meet them. I usually do not have lunch at home on Saturdays as I go out with my friends. We will go window shopping and have our meals there too. I prefer eating Kentucky Fried Chicken with my friends compare to eating lunch alone at home as I can talk gags to my friends, we laugh together and have a whale of time at the fast food outlet. Then, we will continue our shopping trip. All of us are overwhelmed by the elegant clothes and shoes with price tags on them which are displayed in the showcase.      My friends and I will normally go out and paint the town red. Jaywalking around Buaya town is our favourite activity. After that we will surf the web at an internet cafe. We play on-line games and have a blast in the internet cafe. Then, we will have dinner at Secret Recipe. I can enjoy myself and sit relax in the restaurant. I would order a cup of coffee and a piece of Tiramisu cake. Laughter filled the air when I am sipping coffee and chatting with my friends.      On the other hand, Sundays are always a family affair. My daddy will take some time off from his busy schedule just to spend quality time with us. Early in the morning, we will have a picnic at the park. We will prepare breakfast together like toast, pudding and beverages. We can relax our heart, mind and soul while listening to the birds chirping on trees and feeling the cool breeze which makes the trees swinging to and fro. The rest of the afternoon would be spent on watching television or listening to the music.      Apart from that, in the evening my siblings and I join my father for a game of badminton. Badminton is a sort of game that can make us healthy. My mum who has green fingers prefers gardening. She plants lots of flowers and vegetables. Many neighbours praise her as she takes care all of them so nice.      Then, every Sunday I would cook dinner for my family. I drive my mum's car to giant hypermarket and purchase all the ingredients. My family's favourite meal is mushroom with mixed salad, pasta and pork steak. That's why now I am expert in cooking all these cuisine. After that we will have our dinner together at dining room.      After doing some revisions, I go to bed at twelve midnight. It is crucial to do revisions before we go to sleep as it helps to enhance pour memories. I would never burn the midnight oil. As soon as another week starrts, I start looking forward to the following weekend. 37/50
