titanic 666 movie review

I'd hesitate to call Titanic 666 outright "fun" without some level of inebriation -- it could benefit from more campy, over-the-top moments -- but it's fast-moving, breezy, shallow popcorn fare that you can watch with a minimum of brain commitment.

‘titanic 666’ review: ship of fools.

Titanic 666 begins with a nod to James Cameron’s 1997 epic. There are some slight differences, but even those who have not seen Titanic will get the gist of it. Flash forward one hundred and ten years and the Titanic III is about to set sail on its maiden voyage.  Anyone who takes an Asylum produced film too seriously is going about things the wrong way. This is the studio responsible for tie-ins such as Triassic World and Planet Dune , after all. Instead, these movies are more about having fun than delivering a deep message.

Titanic 666 plays its role perfectly, as it is basically a supernatural disaster movie that pays lip service to themes like greed and the value of memories. The creature effects are surprisingly well done. Though there are some odd decisions regarding jump cuts and a noted lack of movement, they look really good.  There is also some well used gore in the movie. Since there is not a lot, each time is very effective. (In an odd trend, almost all of the kills involve the neck area of the victims. It is a kill fetish that means nothing and was done for no reason, but does stick out.) The one exception is a hilarious death involving a lifeboat.

Not all of the fun in Titanic 666 is intentional. From accents to character motivations, it is incredibly inconsistent. It is impossible to know what any character is going to do from one scene to the next and the redemption arc lacks any impact. The closest the movie has to a well rounded character is Captain Celeste Rhodes (Keesha Sharp) and even her biggest motivation seems to be showing off her wedding ring.

Ultimately, the film lives up to its title. It takes place on a ship known as the Titanic and there are dark forces at play. The ghosts look great while the decapitations and throat slashings do not wear out their welcome. Titanic 666 is definitely flawed, but it is harmless fun.

Thanks to the long Fourth of July holiday weekend ahead, it’s a light week for horror. But that doesn’t mean we’re not getting new releases to add to your watchlists.

Here’s all the new horror releasing July 1 – July 5, 2024!

For daily reminders about new horror releases, be sure to follow @HorrorCalendar.

Cold Blows the Wind

A drunk driving mistake turns into a harrowing nightmare for a couple when a stranger suddently appears in Cold Blows the Wind , available now on VOD.

In writer/director Eric Williford ‘s horror film, “After hitting a jogger on the road, a couple chooses to bury the body. When a mysterious stranger appears, things spiral out of control as the body count rises.”

Cold Blows the Wind stars Victoria Vertuga , Jamie Bernadette , Danell Leyva , and Torrey Lawrence .

Dead Whisper

Out in select theaters from Vertical on Friday, July 5, is Dead Whisper . In it, a grief stricken father is offered a demonic trade: his soul for a chance to reconnect with a lost loved one.

The film “follows Elliot Campbell, a Cape Cod lawyer drawn to a mysterious island, where he faces the temptation of reuniting with his dead daughter at the peril of his soul.”

Dead Whisper is the feature debut by director Conor Soucy and stars Samuel Dunning , Rob Evan , Tana Sirois , Samantha Hill , Codey Gillum , Chris Goodwin , Dhane Ross , Hester Wilkinson, and Bruce Winant .

Mia Goth in Maxxxine

The final new horror release for the week comes courtesy of A24. Writer/Director Ti West ‘s MaXXXine slashes into theaters this Friday, July 5.

Here’s the official plot synopsis from A24 this week: “In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.”

Last we saw Maxine in Ti West’s  X  (2022), she was the sole survivor of a massacre carried out by elderly couple Howard and Pearl in the Summer of ’79. Goth of course pulled double duty as the villain Pearl in that movie, who got her own origin story in  Pearl  (2022). Pearl and Maxine are different characters, but they share the common goal of wanting to be stars.

As Ti West explained a while back, “ The way that  X  is a movie that is informed by and affected by independent exploitation auteur Americana and 1970s cinema, and  Pearl  is perhaps affected by the Golden Age of Hollywood and the glitz and glamor of cinema,  MaXXXine  will be more about within the industry itself and the boom of VHS .”

Mia Goth  stars alongside  Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, Sophia Thatcher,  and  Kevin Bacon .

Movie Review: Titanic 666

Titanic 666 - Rotten Tomatoes

I had the pleasure of sitting down with some of the cast and crew of the movie at Wondercon in order to talk about the film which will be released on the Tubi streaming service on April 15th.  The film is an indirect continuation of Cameron’s Titanic movie in the sense that some footage from that film is used in the beginning of the film, per the production team.  Glenn Campbell, FX Supervisor on the film, was especially surprised at this noting that his team took it as a special challenge to try and meet that level of FX as best they could.  Campbell also noted that a typical Asylum film has around 40 FX scenes that must be worked on while this one had over 400, all of which had to be done in less than 100 days.  The screener I was provided did not have all of the finished visual effects but what was done was impressive, especially considering that all of Asylum’s visual effects are done in house.  Most notably, the facial effects on various zombies and the glitch effects on certain ghosts had a polish and “new look” horror feel that was equal to many moderately budgeted horror feature films on the market today.

The plot of the film itself centers around the Titanic III.  Yes, you read that correctly the Titanic III.  Actress Annalynne McCord, who was a font of knowledge about all things Titanic, was able to inform us that there is actually a Titanic II in production now with tickets being sold for it’s maiden voyage.  Ponder that one but I digress.  The owners of the Titanic III, White Star who owned the original Titanic, decide to pack the Titanic III with cosplayers, social media influencers and the like in order to take a PR voyage to the site of the original Titanic disaster.  There, they pause for all of 30 seconds to pay their respects before launching into a gala party.  What could go wrong?  Suffice it to say, plenty could go wrong and it does.

Titanic-666-_-Official-Trailer-_-A-Tubi-Original-1-34-screenshot-600x285

As I stated previously, this movie is classic “B” movie fare and both the producer and director of the film, Paul Bales and Nick Lyon respectively, acknowledge that.  The script was a constantly changing animal and the movie was shot in less than two weeks on site at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, a sister ship to the original Titanic.  However, Lyon cautions people not to dismiss the movie but instead to go in ready to be entertained and frightened.  Lyon has produced several other films of this nature and he’s very adept a producing a film that provides horror movie entertainment that can be enjoyed in one sitting.

All in all this film is exactly what you would expect it to be.  If you go in expecting The Conjuring or Dawn of The Dead you will be disappointed.  If you go in expecting Plan 9 From Outer Space you will be blown away.  This has the makings of an underground cult hilt that I would have watched on Elvira’s Move Macabre back in the day and that’s the beauty of it.  Not every movie has to be polished or even makes sense, sometimes nonsensical fun is the attraction and if you’re looking for that then I recommend this film to you.

Compared to Titanic 665 it's a huge step back in my opinion.

They got rid of Vin Diesel who did the voice of the boat for over 500 movies! You really miss him in this one but Timothée Chalamet did a fine job as Titanic.

I was very much not planning on watching this, but I stayed on it long enough for the preview to start and it had an obvious homo who is cute and looks like he belongs in a Menover30 vid, so I said sure why not.

He plays half of a couple and the other half is AnnaLynne McCord and let me tell you that they are delightful, but then they are only in half the movie so I guess The Asylum couldn’t afford her for more than that, which is a shame because once they’re out this all gets incredibly snoozy.

I do genuinely love that the ship is named “Titanic III” in keeping the continuity of The Asylum’s own…

-I can’t control…the controls!

I had the (dis)pleasure to watch this piece of shit due to a challenge with a close friend, but the ultimate culprit is me, look at the poster, how this could have been any good??

Unquestionably dreadful, unpleasant yet still entertaining for all the wrong reasons, Titanic 666 is easily one of the worst movies of 2022, even my future self in December 2022 will still agree when I’ll finalize my list of the year. A complete lack of talent combined with a tasteless story is what is offered here, what could have been fun and absurd is rapidly becoming tiresome and irritating presented with the cheapest special effects ever created.

Hahahaha a bit of cheesy fun. Nowhere near as bad as I was expecting which isn’t saying much but damn I enjoyed it for how ridiculous it was. Always down for some Annalynne McCord.

No magic here. Bad sci fi level ghost story with no redeeming qualities or likable characters.

Titanic 666

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/titanic_666.jpeg

Titanic 666 is a horror movie released by The Asylum that was released on the 110th anniversary of the Titanic sinking in 2022, serving as a sequel to the 2010 movie Titanic II .

It revolves around the launching of Titanic III , yet another ship designed to emulate the Titanic, and the adventures of a group of influencers called Jackson and Mia as their clashes with Cochran as it makes its fateful trip. It is a ship called after the Titanic however, and it is soon clear that there are paranormal forces lurking underneath the sea, not to say about a mysterious red-headed woman who believes that grave-robbing is being committed on the wreck of the original...

Tropes in this movie:

  • Anyone Can Die : Most certainly - by the time the movie ends, the only character seemingly still alive who we've spent any particular time with is Nancy.
  • The opening credits suggest that Titanic fell to the sea not only in one piece, but with its funnels still attached, something which didn't happen in real life.
  • Idina claims to be the great-granddaughter of Captain Edward Smith. In truth, while he did have two grandchildren, they died childless, meaning that he shouldn't have had great-grandchildren going around. Then again, she clearly isn't right in the head.
  • Black Dude Dies First : Inverted - the last person we see die in the movie is the Black Captain Rhoades when Cochran revives as a dead spirit and attacks her. The actual first victim is apparently the White Male Jackson.
  • Cassandra Truth : No one initially believes Nancy when she claims that the ship is haunted, even though she is correct.
  • Developing Doomed Characters : The first 30 minutes of the movie are spent with Mia and Jackson as they board the ship and record footage. However, they become the first victims of the paranormal forces on board the ship, with Mia being the first fatality confirmed on-screen.
  • Distant Prologue : The first few minutes are set on board the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 and focus on a woman called Elizabeth as she attempts to survive the sinking, only to get attacked by something in the water. The actual movie takes place in the 2020s.
  • Downer Ending : The ship sinks, most of the cast is dead, and the final seconds has Rhoades get killed by Cochran.
  • Famous Ancestor : It's a plot point that Idina is the great-granddaughter of Captain Edward Smith.
  • Fiery Redhead : Idina is a creepy redhead who summons demonic spirits, all under the belief that people are grave-robbing the Titanic.
  • Ghostly Gape : The ghosts have black voids for eyes and open mouths which they use to scream at people.
  • Ghastly Ghost : The ghosts, on top of looking like eyeless versions of their original living selves, now have the desire to kill others.
  • Ghostly Chill : Cochran comments that the ghost he was attacked by felt cold like death. Probably helps that the ghost was that of someone who died in the cold seas where the Titanic sank.
  • Indian Burial Ground : A variant - the reason Idina is causing chaos and summoning ghosts is that she hates that people are desecrating the burial grounds that it is the Titanic. When Edward possesses her, he reveals that he hates that people are sailing over his grave and sinks the new Titanic as revenge.
  • Legacy Vessel Naming : This movie revolves around a third Titanic ship, which meets a similar fate as its predecessors.
  • Musical Assassin : The violinist ghosts tend to knock out and kill their victims by playing a loud screeching sound on their instruments, but not before luring them into complacency with a play of "Nearer My God to Thee".
  • Number of the Beast : The name of the movie is called "Titanic 666", referencing the fact that unlike its predecessors, supernatural and demonic forces are at play here.
  • Spooky Photographs : For the most part, the ghosts are invisible on video footage. However, they do show up as a form of lens flare, which Nancy notices and takes to mean that there are ghosts on board the ship.
  • Summoning Ritual : Idina can be seen summoning the demonic souls through a satanic ritual, which involves human blood. Mia, Jackson, and Nancy come across it, but don't stop it, being more confused than anything.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist : Idina is working because she's mad at Cochran for excavating the Titanic and taking away its treasures, comparing it to grave-robbing. However, summoning the ghosts in a satanic ritual and getting them to curse the ship was perhaps not the best way of dealing with things.
  • Jackson simply vanishes rather than dies or becomes a ghost, but it's not made clear what really happened to him.
  • Where Nancy and the other survivors rescued? It's unclear.
  • What Did You Expect When You Named It ____? : Considering the fact that two Titanics before this one have sunk in catastrophic events, you would think there would be some hesitancy in naming this new ship after them. Fittingly, even before Titanic III leaves, mention is made of a bet on whether the ship would actually survive, and it meets a watery end to vicious ghouls.

titanic 666 movie review

Upcoming horror movie ‘Titanic 666’ is exactly what you think it is

David James

The sinking of RMS Titanic remains one of the most deadly and tragic peacetime maritime disasters in history and has inspired countless books, TV shows, rapping dogs, and, most famously, James Cameron’s 1997 superhit Titanic. His film reignited interest in the story, though perhaps he might not have anticipated that it’d one day result in Titanic 666 .

Deadline reports that this upcoming horror film from The Asylum brings the supernatural into the story and threatens a repeat of the disaster. Here’s the official synopsis:

“One hundred and ten years after its namesake’s fateful journey, the Titanic III’s maiden voyage will land at the original site of the wreck. Although a faithful replica of the original, this mammoth cruise ship is built with the most advanced technology, ensuring that it has no chance of sinking. But when the Titanic III arrives at the tragic site, strange events begin to occur, as dark forces from the deep rise to the surface, terrorizing all aboard and threatening to repeat one of history’s greatest disasters.”

If you’re wondering what happened to ‘Titanic II’, the filmmakers may be aware there’s an actual ship with this name being made that will recreate the original as closely as possible, and they don’t want to get sued by the rights-holders.

Or, alternatively, there actually was a 2010 Titanic II movie also from The Asylum that showed a replica Titanic once more sinking below the waves. Perhaps this is a semi-sequel to that stinker.

Whatever the case, Titanic 666 will see Lydia Hearst playing a stowaway on the Titanic III, desperate for vengeance against those who would exploit the memory of the real-life disaster. That feels a little on the nose considering that this film is doing exactly that, but who knows?

Given how quickly The Asylum speeds their movies through production, I suspect we’ll see Titanic 666 sooner rather than later. If the former passengers of the original disaster really do rise up from the seafloor to wreak havoc, I’d keep an eye out for a certain floppy-fringed blonde guy, as Jack may finally be back… for revenge!

Titanic 666 Review

https://foreverfinalgirl.com/titanic-666/

I was watching random YouTube channels, trying to figure out what to watch. One YouTube channel I follow (and really like their videos, you should check them out) Bloodbath and Beyond , did a trailer reaction and it intrigues me. The cast looks decent and it looks entertaining. So I watched Titanic 666. Boy, this movie feels like a SYFY Channel movie, down to even the bad/cheesy CGI. But props to Tubi for doing original movies/TV.

Titanic III is launching with a lot of fanfare, including relics from the original Titanic. Unknown to all, a descendant stows away and decides to resurrect the victims of the original ship to get revenge.

MY THOUGHTS

I counted at least 8 kills, but there were more. I mean, it’s the Titanic sinking, so a lot more will die. Lots of deaths but not bloody or gory. Not even really interesting deaths. What little blood there is (the guy’s head is knocked off), is just really bad CGI. The evil “ghosts” are not even scary looking. Just grayed out and eyes blackened out.

The acting was decent. One of the reasons I chose this movie is because of the actors. Keesha Sharp (from Leprechaun 6: Back 2 Tha Hood and Lethal Weapon TV series) plays the ship Captain. Jamie Bamber (from Battlestar Galactica) plays greedy Professor Cochran who, basically, is the cause of this mess. There are several other recognizable actors as well. Which is a shame that the CGI was so bad.

Titanic 666 starts off with the maiden voyage of the Titanic III. Along with a variety of interesting characters. We have a married couple who are Social Media Influencers. And yes, they are kind of obnoxious as most Influencers are shown as. We also have a Professor who is showcasing his Titanic collection. He did a dive where he found a huge collection of Titanic artifacts and now is showing them off. Also, he’s hoping to sell them off for a lot of money. Then you have a security “specialist” hired by the board of directors for the ship company, so just to make sure everything is safe. And finally, a young woman who stowed away, who is acting very suspiciously and is up to no good.

Everything seems to be okay and “normal”, except for the young woman who steals one of the artifacts and takes it down below. The influencer couple walk in on her doing some sort of witchcraft sort of spell. The couple leave thinking it’s just for show, but we soon see the ghost of the original captain appear.

From this point on weird things happen. Lights go out, phones, as well as electronics stop working. And then people start disappearing or dying in weird ways. But, as usual, when someone figures it out, nobody believes them.

Overall, it’s not really that good. Titanic 666 feels like it can’t decide if it wants to be a cheesy horror movie or a serious horror movie. In the end I don’t feel it was either. It’s a basic SYFY channel movie with bad CGI and a story that is very thin at the most. If you like this type of cheese and bad CGI then check it out. Otherwise just pass on it.

  4. Titanic 666 (2022) Review

Titanic 666 was filmed onboard the Queen Mary, so at least the interior shots look great. Titanic 666 rapidly turns into a series of fairly standard jump scares that could still have been a lot of fun if the effects hadn't sucked so badly. Even the way the ghosts move, via jump-cut teleportation, is silly rather than frightening.

  7. 'Titanic 666' review: Lives up to expectations

Titanic 666 plays its role perfectly, as it is basically a supernatural disaster movie that pays lip service to themes like greed and the value of memories. The creature effects are surprisingly well done. Though there are some odd decisions regarding jump cuts and a noted lack of movement, they look really good.

  8. Titanic 666 (2022)

Now, the visual presentation of "Titanic 666" has to be brought into the light. Color me impressed. The Asylum really have upped their game here with this 2022 movie and brought out the big wallet. The special effects, the sets, props, and such really were good. It looked rather authentic, and the CGI was good.
