The 2022 LCMS Poverty Assessment provides reliable estimates at national, rural/urban and province level. This document reflects results on selected indicators on Monetary Poverty and Multi-dimensional Child Poverty determined using Multiple Overlapping Deprivation (MODA) methodology.
Abstract. Rural poverty rates in Zambia have remained very high, at 80%, over the past decade and a half, whilst urban poverty rates have declined, from 49% in 1991 to 34% in 2006. Redressing...
poverty in Zambia is overwhelmingly a rural phenomenon. In 2010 the moderate poverty rate in rural areas was 74 percent, more than double the urban poverty rate of 35 percent.
Over the past decade, Zambia has experienced a marginal decline in poverty levels. However, the poverty rates remain high due to the limited participation of working-age people in growth sectors which have the potential for job creation (Kampamba et al. 2019).
Focusing on the period 2006-2015, the analysis provides insight into the following aspects of poverty in Zambia: • The shifts in poverty levels on national and regional levels. • The shifts in poverty levels across economic sectors. • The responsiveness of poverty reduction to growth - i.e. the growth elasticity of poverty.
In the assessment MicroZAMOD was used to first analyse the coverage and poverty impact of the current social protection system, and secondly to assess to what extent potential Cash Plus policy reform scenarios can further support reducing poverty. Figure 1 summarizes the content of the assessment.
Abstract. This study assesses the redistributive impact of fiscal policy–– and its individual elements––in Zambia. Zambia’s 2015 fiscal policy reduces inequality; the largest reduction is cre-ated by in-kind public service expenditures on education. However, fiscal policy also increases poverty in three ways:
In the past, a major weakness of development planning in Zambia has been the poor implementation that stemmed largely from poor resource forecasts, weak institutional arrangements and weak monitoring mechanisms/systems for the Plans.
poverty and service access are of limited use in urban areas. Distance in particular is a misleading indicator. In Zambia the urban poor may be near a bus stop, a water pump or a clinic, but low incomes and population pressure reduces access and/or the quality of service.
Urban poverty has become a characteristic feature of urban living in Zambia. Statistical evidence suggests that of the 4.3 million people resident in urban areas of Zambia, 34 % live in extreme...
