Doctoral and Licentiate studies

The Department of Political Science offers a PhD in political science. As a part of the PhD studies, it is also possible to obtain a Licentiate degree.

It is the ambition of our department to have about ten active doctoral students. We aim to admit a couple of new students each year and that the same number complete their studies. About twenty professors and associate professors, and senior lecturers, are supervisors for the doctoral students.

The programme aiming at a PhD degree in political science (filosofie doktorsexamen) consists of 240 ECTS. The licentiate degree in political science (filosofie licentiatexamen) consists of 120 ECTS (equivalent to up to two years of full time studies).

The postgraduate programme consists of

  • A written thesis
  • Active participation in the Research Seminar, which is devoted to the presentation and discussion of ongoing research
  • Compulsory and optional courses

General eligibility requirements To be eligible to apply for a PhD place in Political Science at Umeå University, you must have 240 ECTS. At least 90 ECTS must be in political science or peace and conflict studies (or equivalent) and at least 60 ECTS must be at advanced level (i.e. Masters level). For admission, a degree awarded at the Advanced level of study is a prerequisite. All our doctoral studies positions are advertised on the university home page.

Doctoral studies in our department are preferably conducted in collaboration with one or more of the five research profiles.

Please note that we only accept graduate students after open calls on the university homepage, link below (Open positions). Likewise, we do not pre-judge or pre-evaluate applications, these are only reviewed in conjunction with an open and advertised call.

PhD programmes

When you apply for a phd programme in sweden, you’re actually applying for a job. yeah, you read that right. 👀.

political science phd in sweden

“Do a master’s here – I’d say it’s a very good step to doing a PhD in Sweden. I did my master’s at Malmö University and now I’m doing a PhD at Lund University” – Sanjay, Malmö University. Photo: Oskar Omne

So that means – no tuition fees, no scholarships. But you’ll receive a monthly salary instead. Nice, eh? And that’s why available PhD positions are listed on a university’s job board.

How to apply for a PhD position? You’ll apply directly to the university.

Just so you know, there’s no centralised application process. And things like requirements and application dates? This kind of stuff is decided by each department. But we do know that you’ll need to have a master’s degree – in the same field of study – and a great level of English to apply for a PhD here. You might even need to be fluent in Swedish. But that’ll depend on the subject.

Programme content

Uppsala University’s PhD programmes are comprised of courses and a dissertation in which students carry out a unique and significant individual research project. The project may result in either a monograph thesis, which is a cohesive scientific work, or a compilation thesis consisting of several scientific articles and a summary.

A PhD degree is equivalent to four years of full-time study; however, after two years of studies students can graduate with a licentiate degree.

Our PhD programmes give students the knowledge and skills to conduct independent research, a deep understanding of the subject area, and the ability to teach.

To be admitted as a doctoral student, candidates must:

  • fulfil the entry requirements stated in the announcement
  • possess good English language skills
  • have the ability to cope with the programme

Insurance for doctoral students with stipends

Uppsala University provides insurance cover for doctoral students whose studies are funded through a stipend. This insurance consists of three parts:

  • Sickness benefit
  • Parental benefit
  • Temporary parental benefit

International PhD students are also covered by Uppsala University’s group and personal insurance that provides accident insurance around the clock.

These insurance schemes are both managed by the Swedish Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency (Kammarkollegiet). Please note that illness, parental benefit or claiming of temporary parental benefit must be reported to [email protected] no later than on the second day of sick leave or parental leave.

Two PhD positions in Political Science (PA2022/3654)

University of lund , sweden.

Duties The PhD programme in political science consists of 240 credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies) and is concluded with the public defence of a doctoral thesis. The appointed doctoral students will receive a salary from the University during four years, and their primary obligation is to complete their PhD studies. The position may involve departmental duties, mainly in the form of teaching, up to 20 per cent of full time working hours, in which case the appointment will be extended by the equivalent number of hours. The doctoral student will have access to a work space at the Department of Political Science . The terms of employment for doctoral students are regulated in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (HF), Chapter 5, Sections 1– 7.

The doctoral student shall be present and actively participate in the research and teaching environment at the department. The main language of the PhD programme is English. However, non-Swedish speaking students are expected to acquire basic skills in Swedish during the period of employment. There are opportunities to participate in language courses taught at the University. The doctoral position will commence on 1 September 2023. The general syllabus and other information about the PhD programme in political science is available at: http://www.svet.lu.se/en/education/phd-studies

Limit of tenure, four years according to HF 5 kap 7§.

Qualifications The requirements for admission to third cycle courses and study programmes (in accordance with HF, Chapter 7, Section 35) are that the applicant • meets the general and specific entry requirements that the higher education institution may have laid down, and • is considered in other respects to have the ability required to benefit from the course or study programme (Swedish Code of Statutes 2010:1064).

A person meets the general entry requirements for third cycle courses and study programmes if the person: • has been awarded a second cycle qualification, • has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or • has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Specific entry requirements In addition to the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed at least 30 second cycle credits of coursework within the main field of political science, or acquired the equivalent knowledge, i.e. coursework with an orientation towards politics in another discipline deemed equivalent, in Sweden or abroad. Moreover, the applicant must have completed a Master’s degree thesis of at least 15 credits in political science or other discipline deemed equivalent.

Assessment criteria Only applicants who are eligible for third cycle studies may be appointed to a doctoral studentship. Admission is primarily to be based on the applicant’s ability to benefit from the third cycle programme. The applicants will be ranked based on an overall assessment of the quality of their submitted thesis/theses and research plan, grades from previous studies, and their personal suitability. As third cycle studies in political science are very demanding, the applicant must be highly motivated and able to work independently under time constraints. Good collaboration and communication skills are also required, as is proficiency in both written and spoken English. Interviews will be conducted with a shortlisted number of applicants during the final stages of the admission process.

Application procedure Applications are to be submitted electronically via the Lund University application portal. The application must include: • A cover letter in Swedish or English of max 1 000 words, which contains a brief presentation of yourself and your qualifications, as well as a brief explanation of why you are interested in third cycle studies at the Department of Political Science at Lund University. • A CV in Swedish or English that demonstrated your qualifications for the third cycle programme in Political Science. • Degree and grade certificates in Swedish or English. • Master’s degree thesis in Swedish or English corresponding to at least 15 credits in political science or other discipline deemed equivalent (in addition to the Master’s degree thesis, a Bachelor’s degree thesis can also be submitted). • A brief research plan in Swedish or English of max 2 000 words including references. • Name and contact information of two personal references (letters of reference are not required in the first stage of application). • Other documentation of relevance to the position.

The evaluation of applicants is based on documents submitted by the application deadline. Only complete applications will be considered. It is not possible to add documentation after the deadline.

Exploring Equilibrium Communication in Political Scandals: Insights from CEU Scholars

New Publication

We are pleased to highlight a recent publication by Bence Hamrak , a PhD student, Gabor Simonovits , a professor from CEU's Political Science Department, and Ferenc Szucs , an alumnus of CEU currently serving as an assistant professor at the Department of Economics, Stockholm University, Sweden. Their article, "Equilibrium communication in political scandals," published in the European Journal of Political Economy , delves into the dynamics of communication during political scandals.

The study investigates how communication strategies reach equilibrium in the context of political scandals. Using advanced modeling techniques, the researchers analyze the strategic interactions and information flows that shape public perception and political outcomes in scandalous situations.
