Are you looking for ways to bring in some extra income, but don’t want to invest any money into courses, equipment, or fees? Online data entry jobs are an easy and cost-free way to make some money on the side in the comfort of your own home.
As long as you have your own laptop or computer and an internet connection, you can get started with online data entry jobs without investment. There are several types of data entry jobs to choose from, depending on your skills and experience.
In this post, I will tell you all about making money with online data entry jobs. You will learn about:
- data entry requirements
- how much you can earn with online data entry jobs
- types of online data entry jobs
- top legit online data entry sites to find jobs
- pros and cons of online data entry jobs
- how to avoid online data entry scammers
Data entry is a viable way to make some cash while working from home in your spare time.
Zippa reports that the average annual salary of a data entry clerk starts at $25,000. So, you likely won’t make a full-time income, but you can create a nice financial supplement.
Let’s get started by explaining what data entry is.
What is data entry?
Data entry is the process of entering data such as text, numbers, and even audio and video into a computer software program like a spreadsheet, database, or word processing file. Data can also be imported or scanned into a computer, where it can be stored and analyzed. This is often done for the purpose of updating business records, logging information, or tracking data points.
Payment for data entry is typically based on a metric called words per minute (wpm) , which is the number of words you can type in 60 seconds. The more words you can type, the more money you can make.
Someone who performs data entry is often referred to as a data entry clerk. However, there are a wide variety of jobs that require data entry but have different titles. I’ll go over some of these a little later in the post.
While many data entry jobs are great for beginners with no previous experience, there are some specialized jobs that require additional training.
Data entry workers are needed in all types of industries, so finding these jobs is not difficult.
What qualifications are needed for data entry?
Many legitimate data entry jobs are entry-level positions, and don’t require specialized training. That means there are minimal qualifications for most data entry workers.
These include:
- Excellent typing skills (typical minimum is 45 wpm)
- Attention to detail and organization
- Proficient grammar, spelling and punctuation skills
- Experience with required software programs
- Can learn new data entry programs quickly
- Excellent communication skills
- Organizational skills
- Can multitask efficiently
Besides these skills, you will also need a computer or laptop, as well as fast and reliable internet access. A pair of good headphones and a foot pedal for transcribing can also come in pretty handy.
How much can you earn?
In general, data entry workers with basic keyboarding skills can earn a very modest income. According to 2021 data, the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports that the median hourly wage for data entry keyers is $17.13. This is an annual full-time wage of just over $35k.
You can expect a higher wage if you have specialized skills and accept jobs from certain companies.
Some jobs will pay by the project or per word instead of by the hour, so always be sure to read the details of every job you consider.
As I mentioned previously, basic data entry jobs won’t generate a substantial full-time income. But, you can supplement the income you already make quite nicely.
The work itself is not demanding and the hours are flexible, so making a little extra cash on the side can easily be accomplished. At $17/hour, you could bring in anywhere from $500 to $1000 a month by working a few hours a week.
If you want to work full-time as a data entry operator, be sure to increase your skill level and get additional training so you can accept higher paying jobs.
Types of legitimate data entry jobs
There are a wide range of data entry roles that you could choose from. As long as you have the required skills, your options are endless.
Because all industries need data entry workers, you could accept jobs from many types of companies, such as:
- Manufacturing
Let’s look at some of the most common data entry positions out there.
Data Entry Clerk
Data entry clerk is a general term for anyone who operates a data entry device (such as a computer and keyboard) to enter data into systems, spreadsheets, and company databases for the purpose of recording and organizing information for a company.
They may also update online records with new information, proofread and edit documents, or conduct market research surveys.
There are many types of data entry clerks, and you will find these jobs in practically every type of organization. Being skilled with various computer software programs will open up more jobs and higher pay for you.
Data Transcriber
Data transcribing jobs are plentiful and in demand. As a transcriber, you would convert audio and video files into text.
This process is important for medical providers, law firms, professors, public speakers, and content creators (YouTube, podcasts).
This job requires a high degree of accuracy, knowledge of professional jargon, and the ability to decipher various accents. Having a foot pedal to stop and start the audio file can significantly increase your speed.
Image to text
Data entry roles that convert image to text will take image files such as faxes, digitized written notes, and PDFs and type the content into a document.
Converting an image into text allows the content to be edited, unlike a scanned document.
Data entry keyers
Data entry keyers transfer written information from physical documents into a database or spreadsheet. They compile and organize this information, verify the accuracy of the data, and prepare materials for printing.
These data entry roles are often a part of a company’s quality control department, since part of the job is to identify errors and make corrections.
Specialized positions include:
- Payment entry keyers: enter customers’ financial data (such as deposits, withdrawals, payments, etc.) into company databases
- Catalog data entry keyers: enter fields of a table with product names and numbers, price, codes, etc.
- Payroll data entry keyers: enter data such as employee names, birthdates, date hired, salary, etc.
- Online forms data entry keyers: fill database fields with values from a completed form, such as customer name, phone number, address, etc.
- Updating databases: update existing databases and create new ones
Data formatting
Data formatting requires less typing than the typical data entry job. You would format a document of digital content by arranging paragraphs, applying different fonts, creating lists, applying indentations, etc.
Virtual Assistant
Virtual assistants have become a very popular online gig over the last few years. Basically, VAs provide virtual support to businesses by performing various online administrative tasks.
The range of responsibilities can vary greatly, depending on the needs of the employer. These could typically include managing social media platforms, scheduling appointments, making phone calls and organizing emails. But, there is often a need for data entry to compile data, organize online documents, and input client information.
Proofreader
Proofreaders read through various forms of written content (books, research papers, articles, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring there are no errors and the publication is ready to be published and distributed.
As a proofreader, you must have excellent spelling, punctuation, and grammar skills. You should also be familiar with different formatting style such as MLA, CMS, and APA, and possibly have experience with proofreading software. You would be responsible for identifying mistakes and correcting them, as well as verifying there is no plagiarism.
Medical data entry
A medical data entry operator enters all pertinent patient information into a system’s database. This data includes patient personal information, diagnoses, doctor’s note, medical treatments, past medical history, etc.
Medical Coding
A medical coding specialist transforms medical diagnoses, procedures, and services into uniform medical codes. This type of online data entry job requires specialized training, and therefore pays more than most data entry jobs.
Uniform medical codes are found on documents such as doctor’s notes and lab results, and they assist insurance companies to process claims with precision, consistency, and accuracy. Medical coding professionals assign the correct codes for medical billing.
Medical transcription
Like medical coding, a medical transcriptionist also needs specialized training for this popular data entry job.
Medical transcription involves converting audio files into a written document. These audio files are often doctors’ appointment notes, medical files, and conference calls.
As a medical transcriptionist, you must be very familiar with medical jargon and able to decipher thick accents in order to transcribe with accuracy. You should also know how to operate a foot pedal for transcribing, and be a fast typist.
Once you acquire the proper training, you could make a very good income with this data entry job.
As an ad poster, you would post ad content to specified blogs, forums and classified sites. The more ads you post, the more money you make. However, each ad will only get you a few cents, so any extra income would be minimal.
Customized Reports
Making customized reports involves preparing reports for an individual client or business. You would create spreadsheets, charts, and graphs within a text document, according to specific instructions from the client.
Data Coordinator
As a data coordinator, you would organize and process data to help analysts and businesses make informed business decisions. This position requires extensive training and experience.
Some of the responsibilities can include collecting and interpreting data, organizing databases, preparing data for reporting purposes, performing data queries, and implementing data security.
Web content and social media
There are many websites and blogs that will hire freelancers to write and/or edit their articles. This isn’t technically a data entry job, because in many instances you would actually be creating the content yourself. But, the skills required are quite similar.
You would need to having good grasp of grammar and spelling, be a fast typist, and interpret given directions into a written document. Beginning content writers typically earn up to $40 for a 1,000-word article.
Captcha Entry
A captcha is an image of randomly generated letters and/or numbers that is used to reduce spam bots on websites. The captcha requires human input, and this provides protection against unauthorized digital entry.
Unfortunately, captcha jobs are often used for unethical purposes. There are people who will hire you to do captcha entry to easily hack into a website.
Be sure you are fully aware of the intent behind any captcha job you take. You do not want to be a part of any activity that could be considered unethical or illegal.
An at-home data entry captioning job is a specialized type of transcription. Basically, someone who is hired to caption is responsible for creating the text known as “closed caption” for pre-recorded video such as movies and TV series. This is also known as offline captioning.
Closed-caption text is created for those who cannot hear any part of the audio. Thus, it includes all of the word-for-word dialog, as well as any secondary content such as coughing, laughing, a door closing, the wind blowing, music playing, etc.
Captioning requires highly skilled training and certification. Experience as a court reporter is also helpful. You may need specialized equipment that you know how to use.
Another type of offline captioning is subtitling, which is for those who can hear the audio, but need extra support to understand a different language or accent.
Data Capturing
Data capturing is a type of online data entry job that turns written or electronic documents into data that can be read and processed by information management systems.
This is how many businesses prepare, sort, manage, edit, and store their company data.
To be hired for a data capturing job, you would need many of the same skills as a basic level data entry operator. You would also need the ability to research, collect, and compile various forms of data.
Copy & Paste
As the title suggests, a copy & paste job involves copying data from one digital file and pasting it into another. This is often necessary when a company changes to a different software system and needs to replicate their current records.
You may be asked to sort the data, or convert an uneditable file (like a PDF) into editable text form.
Online Surveys
Filling out online surveys is a popular way to make a little side money. These surveys are typically simple and short questionnaires that are used to get valuable feedback.
There are several survey sites you could choose from, but a few of the most popular are SwagBucks, InboxDollars and Survey Junkie. Be cautious of survey sites that ask for any personal financial information or your social security number.
Many surveys can be completed with 15 minutes, but you would need to complete many of them to make any significant money.
Email processing
An email processor would read, sort, and organize emails, and then sort the information into a word document or spreadsheet.
Email processing jobs are not challenging, but can be tedious and time-consuming.
Word processing
Word processing is a bit more than just entering given data into a computer. It involves creating documents and text-based materials, such as emails, letters, reports, and even tables and charts.
You should be proficient in word processing and spreadsheet software. You must also have excellent spelling, vocabulary, and grammar skills.
Data cleaning
Data cleaning (also known as data cleansing) involves searching tables and databases to remove errors. These mistakes could be misspellings, inconsistencies, redundancies, or incomplete information.
As a data cleaning professional, you would also be responsible for making corrections and edits, and ensuring databases are being populated with accurate and reliable data.

As with any job, there are also a few disadvantages to working online data entry jobs. Consider the downsides of data entry work before you start accepting jobs.
- You must be careful of job scams and fake postings on the internet.
- Entry level data entry jobs are typically low-paying positions and should be considered a side-gig instead of a full-time job.
- Some data entry projects have tight deadlines that can be challenging for you to meet.
- Freelance work does not provide a reliable, consistent salary or benefits.
- You must own or buy the required equipment yourself.
- Remote data entry work can be monotonous, and therefore job satisfaction can be low.
How to avoid getting scammed with data entry jobs
Unfortunately, the internet is full of unethical people who want to take advantage of others. This includes creating fake data entry job postings in order to get innocent job seekers to pay for something they’ll never receive, or never get paid for work completed.
So, how do you protect yourself from getting scammed by illegitimate businesses?
Here are a few things to look out for that will minimize your risk of being scammed.
- Websites that ask for fees upfront . You should never have to pay any money before you accept an online data entry job. Registration should always be free. Legitimate companies only deduct fees from what you’ve already earned.
- Websites that require you to pay for special software, equipment, or online testing from them. This is a major red flag. Legitimate businesses may require you to have specific equipment, but they shouldn’t require you to buy it from them. Also, any testing before hiring should be free of charge.
- Websites that require you to buy an online course or training before hiring you. You will need to have certain skills to accept genuine data entry jobs, but a company shouldn’t require you to go through a paid training with them.
- Websites that don’t provide their location, contact information or other important details. Don’t work for companies that aren’t transparent about who they are, where they’re located, and how to contact them.
- Websites with unusually long and strange URLs. A legitimate website should always have a simple online address that includes the business name, followed by a top level domain extension (.com, .org, .gov, etc.)
- Websites that look unprofessional, outdated, or sketchy. You’ll know it when you see it.
Always spend some time researching the company with outside sources. You shouldn’t have any problem finding information about a business from other websites. For extra validation, check if they’re listed with the Better Business Bureau.

To get an online data entry job, you will need to meet a few simple requirements. You will need to be a fast and accurate typist, have a computer or laptop with a reliable internet connection, and have a strong grasp of grammar, punctuation and spelling. With these basic skills, you can make money with online data entry jobs.

If you have a computer and an internet connection, you can get data entry jobs. Entry level opportunities don’t pay a lot of money, but you can expand your skills to include transcription, proofreading, coding, or captioning to increase your pay rate.
You can sign up with multiple companies to create a steady stream of available jobs. Requirements will vary depending on the jobs offered, but even beginners can find jobs they qualify for.

23 Best Data Entry Jobs From Home (Earn $35+/Hour)
Data entry jobs, in particular, stand out because they’re easy to do, and an entry-level position may require only a high school diploma, Internet access, and some basic Excel skills.
What’s not to like? There are a couple of things:
- Low Wages: Data entry job descriptions sound appealing, but wages tend to be low, and higher-wage jobs have a ton of competition.
- Scams: Too many positions ask you for money upfront to buy software or complete training — a warning sign the remote job isn’t a job but a scam taking advantage of hopeful applicants. (Some legit platforms charge subscriptions to filter out scams.)
We decided to review data entry specialist online jobs and platforms individually and see how they hold up.
If you are interested in data entry as a side hustle , part-time, or full-time job, you’ll find all the information you need here, including a list of the best online data entry jobs today.

How Do Data Entry Jobs Work?
At its simplest, data entry requires, well, entering data. This broad term means different things to different companies. But all data entry specialists do this:
- They receive raw data from a source, such as a web form or a stack of papers.
- They enter this data into a computer system or another format to be processed.
The data entered could be just about anything — ordinary text, industry-specific codes, order numbers, images, or even audio and video files.
Data entry won’t be the most intellectually stimulating job in the world. Repetition, speed, and accuracy are key data entry skills.
How Can I Do Data Entry Work From Home?
Most jobs allow you full access to your data entry work anywhere — and anytime — you have Internet access. So you could work from your living room, car, the library, a waiting room, or while on vacation. You get the idea.
To get started in your data entry career, you’ll need a few basic skills and some software and equipment you probably already have:
- Fast Typing: The most advanced skill you’ll need is the ability to type quickly. If you’re considering transcribing audio or video, this will be particularly important since you‘ll get paid per audio minute – the faster you type, the more you earn.
- Accurate Typing: You have to be able to enter data accurately. Accurate typing is important for transcribing and for more standard data entry jobs. If you can’t already touch-type quickly and accurately, learning this skill before you start searching for work could save you a lot of time in the long run.
- Hardware: A laptop and your own mobile hotspot can set you free to work anywhere you have a solid cell signal. But you could also work on a home WiFi network, a public network at the library or a public park, or even at a restaurant or hotel with WiFi. Consider a desktop computer with two monitors if you’d rather set up a home office. Be sure to get a keyboard with a number pad — or a separate number pad — if you’re doing numerical data entry. Some jobs may require devices like scanners.
- Software: Some jobs require company-specific software, but you shouldn’t have to buy this yourself! Other companies use standard programs like Microsoft Word, Excel, Quickbooks, or Google Docs. A Mac or Windows operating system should work unless your employer has specific requirements. But a Chromebook could add extra steps if your company uses Microsoft products.
And that’s about it – if you can tick these things off the list, you’re good to go.
23 Best Data Entry Jobs from Home
Here are the top data entry jobs and platforms that allow you to work from home:
- Mechanical Turk (Amazon)
- Virtual Vocations
- Axion Data Services
- DionData Solutions
Platforms For Finding Data Entry Work
Many new work-from-home data entry specialists like to find work on freelancing platforms. These platforms can connect you with people who need data entry work.
You can set up a profile as you would on social media and get job alerts via text or email when a job posting matches your skills and experience.
These platforms have a lot more than just work-from-home data entry jobs. They also have typing jobs and positions for customer service representatives, graphic designers, freelance writers , transcribers , administrative assistants, social media managers, and so on.
Some of my favorite platforms are:
1. Flexjobs
Flexjobs is a job board providing all kinds of flexible work; this frequently includes data entry positions.
Job leads on Flexjobs are handpicked and researched by humans to filter out scams. This should put your mind at rest in an industry like data entry, but this service comes at a price. You’ll need to join Flexjobs and pay a monthly subscription.
In an industry as low-paid as data entry, a $15 or so subscription may seem steep, but it’s worth considering — especially if you’re interested in applying for other kinds of flexible work.
Flexjobs now has online skills tests so you can prove your typing skills or software skills to prospective employers.
Price: $14.95 30% off using code 'FLEXLIFE'
The biggest site for finding remote, work-from-home jobs, both full-time and part-time for your skillset. The trained researchers at FlexJobs hand-screen job listings to eliminate ads and scams found on other sites. Find everything from entry-level to executive positions at FlexJobs.
On Fiverr , you set up a profile to “sell” your data entry skills to buyers who need them. The more prior experience you have and the better you market yourself, the more success you’ll have.
The most successful “sellers” have multiple skills, but you could set up shop as a data entry pro and see if you get any hits.
The more years of data entry experience — and the more satisfied clients you can list on your profile — the more success you’ll have selling your services.
In most cases, you’d compete with service providers from throughout the United States and the world.
List your data entry skills for hire on Fiverr today.
Upwork is another platform where you could sell your data entry skills. About 70,000 new job postings appear on the site each week, but only a fraction of those seek a data entry specialist.
Still, by joining this service and setting up an attractive profile, you could get connected with contract work. Most remote data entry job postings want your labor on a project-by-project basis.
Finding full-time or even part-time work isn’t as likely.
4. Mechanical Turk (Amazon)
Mechanical Turk (otherwise known as MTurk) is Amazon’s crowdsourcing marketplace. This service matches remote workers with people who need small jobs completed.
MTurk uses the term “microtasks” for these jobs requiring little human expertise. Many microtasks are similar to data entry, or they include data entry. So you can probably find some tasks that match your skill set.
For example, someone may want you to transcribe an audio recording of a meeting — which is a lot like data entry.
MTurk is a growing platform, and it works for a lot of people. But be careful: Some work-from-home tasks take a lot of time and do not pay well. Many pay significantly below a living wage.
It’s even possible to get stiffed on a contract if the employer isn’t 100 percent satisfied with the work. Some postings pay in Amazon gift cards.
And, unlike Flexjobs, MTurk’s job postings aren’t filtered for scams.
5. Virtual Vocations
Virtual Vocations works like Flexjobs, except you can join for free — on a limited basis. As a free member, you’d get a hand-picked list of work-at-home data entry job leads daily.
To get full access, you must upgrade to a paid membership.
With a monthly subscription, you can see all job postings, build an attractive profile to attract people who need data entry work completed and take online courses to sharpen your skills.
Pure Data Entry Jobs
As mentioned previously, “data entry” is a broad term. There aren’t many companies dedicated solely to data entry in its purest form, but some of the few are listed below.
If you follow any of the links below, you’ll notice that the websites are outdated, which speaks volumes about this industry.
However, these sites are likely your best bets for earning a living wage from data entry.
6. Axion Data Services
Axion Data Services specializes in data entry services, as its name suggests.
The company does not take new applications often, but it’s good to be registered in its database if it releases new roles.
Axion requires two to three years of data entry experience and typing skills of 50 words per minute (wpm), so this isn’t one for beginners. You also need to pass a criminal background check. When you get on board, Axion works as your data entry agent, connecting you with contract work.
Axion pays independent contractors on a piece-by-piece basis, and you can expect to work 20 to 25 hours a week. The wage is generous too, which is why securing a place can be tricky.
7. DataPlus+
DataPlus+ hires data entry clerks, MS Access database programmers, mail/document handling clerks, and administrative personnel.
You must complete a criminal background check, but the only other requirements are owning a computer and having high-speed internet access.
To apply, upload the relevant documents and wait to be contacted.
8. DionData Solutions
DionData Solutions is a data management services bureau that works for government agencies and companies. The company often hires typists to do data entry, which typically involves moving information from one source to another.
You could be processing information such as medical claims, surveys, or inventories. You must be able to type at a speed of 60 wpm, possess basic computer skills, and be a United States citizen.
9. SigTrack
SigTrack processes voter registrations and petition signatures. The work you complete will involve figuring out whether signatures are from voters.
Due to the nature of the work, you must be a United States citizen, and the work revolves around the petition season, meaning you will probably need to look for another job, too.
To be accepted, you must complete a test to prove you can achieve 98% accuracy on your work. You must also have a single 4k or double monitor and do a Skype call to prove your U.S. identity.
They pay on a piece-by-piece basis; the pay may seem low at first, but most users double or triple their pay within the first few days.
10. TDEC (The Data Entry Company)
TDEC is the world’s largest provider of business processing outsourcing services to government and commercial clients. They’re in constant need of data entry operators.
However, they don’t advertise job positions on their site – you’ll need to send an email with your application and resume and wait for them to get back to you with positions as they open up.
Because positions are less advertised, you may have a greater chance of success.

Microtask Jobs
A microtask is a small and simple job that a human rather than artificial intelligence must complete.
Although microtasks seem distinct from data entry, there’s a lot of overlap; both consist of simple tasks anyone can do.
Microtask websites also frequently host jobs in data entry due to this overlap.
11. Clickworker
Clickworker is primarily a microtasks website, but many of the tasks available include data entry work. After you register, you must complete an assessment to demonstrate your ability; your performance will dictate the number of jobs available to you.
Like most similar sites, Clickworker pays on a piece-by-piece basis. They also have other jobs available which are fairly low-skilled, such as writing and researching.
You can sign up to have jobs sent to your inbox
12. Microworkers
Microworkers is another microtask site. It offers a variety of tasks, including data entry. Some of their jobs pay better than other similar sites, such as those named above.
However, a drawback is that you get paid only for approved work, which can be frustrating, but you should only accept jobs you know you can complete.
Microworkers pays twice a week.
Transcription Jobs
There’s a lot of overlap between data entry and transcription. Data entry typically involves transferring information and data from one source (such as a scanned photo) to another, while transcription involves transferring information from audio or video format into writing.
The same skills are needed – basic computer skills, word processing experience, and quick typing.
13. AccuTran Global
AccuTran Global provides transcription and similar services. They mostly offer transcription jobs but sometimes have data entry positions available, too.
To secure a role, you must score well on the assessment and have a typing speed of at least 60-70 wpm. They also only hire workers from the UK and Canada.
You may be offered work in a different department if you have a good track record and additional competencies. Therefore, you could start by doing transcription or data entry but later move to something more intellectually stimulating.
14. Kendall Creek Communications
Kendall Creek Communications specializes in legal transcription. This company has a long list of clients, including U.S. government agencies, and is a big employer of remote workers for transcription, data processing, and market research roles.
However, make sure that you apply through the official website as there are sometimes scams where people pretend to be from this company.
15. GoTranscript
GoTranscript is an audio and video transcription services company. It offers the most positions in transcription and video captioning but also has data entry jobs available.
If your application is accepted, you must undergo training and certification before you can get started.
16. Quicktate
Quicktate specializes in the transcription of voicemails and other audio content. You’ll struggle to earn a living wage unless you can type faster than 50 wpm.
However, if you speak more languages, you can earn more. You must pay for a background check yourself. Despite this requirement, Quicktate isn’t a scam.
17. Scribie
Scribie is another audio transcription company, but it also offers data entry positions. Once a job is selected, you must complete it in two hours, and you’ll be assigned a score depending on your accuracy.
Scribie hires beginners, but you’ll likely be put on a waiting list until they have a slot available.
Once selected, you must take a test; if you pass, they’ll hire you immediately. If you fail, they’ll point out where you went wrong and give you a chance to take a retest up to 10 times.
There’s also the chance to get promoted to ‘reviewer’ status if you consistently produce high-quality work.
Other Top Data Entry Employers
Although there aren’t many companies left that hire solely for data entry services, there are considerably more companies regularly looking for people to do their data entry work.
Here are a few of them, but you might be able to find more jobs by searching for data entry work on websites like Indeed, Monster, and LinkedIn.
18. Cass Information Systems
Cass Information Systems is a huge multinational financial services firm.
They sometimes offer remote data entry positions, but you must first attend in-person training in Missouri or Ohio to secure the role.
19. Capital Typing
Capital Typing calls itself the ‘world’s smartest office.’ Capital provides various virtual office services, including data entry, transcription, translation, and secretarial services.
With data entry, you can expect to do work such as data extraction, research, database development and management, direct mail, and marketing services. If you apply for a position and the firm is interested in your application, a recruiter will invite you to a Skype interview.
If you prove yourself to be a reliable and capable worker, you can be promoted to a higher position.
20. GorgeWarehouse
GorgeWarehouse is an online retailer – not an obvious data entry employer. However, it often advertises for data entry positions on the employment section of the website.
To apply, you must be able to type at a speed of at least 30 wpm. GorgeWarehouse offers telecommuting as a perk, meaning this position is technically an online job.
Pay is also higher than most data entry positions.
21. Working Solutions
Working Solutions is a call center that offers many work-at-home positions, including data entry clerk jobs.
You must fill out your application and take online assessments, and it can take two weeks to get your application approved after passing the test.
A knowledge of French or Spanish is an advantage as Working Solutions operates worldwide, and these languages are in demand.
Working Solutions is a woman-owned company that hires independent contractors for data entry work. (It does not do business in California, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington.)
To apply, you must buy your own background check, but Working Solutions is a legitimate community — not a scam.
22. Xerox from Home
Xerox from Home – Xerox is a printing supplies company with an entire work-at-home division. It regularly hires for lots of positions, including data entry.
You can go on to the employment section of their website; be sure to filter by virtual working options.
23. Lionbridge
Lionbridge isn’t exclusively a work-from-home company, but work-at-home data entry jobs have appeared on its job board.
The company does a wide variety of creative work for a diverse client base. You’d be a good applicant if you speak multiple languages since Lionbridge does multilingual video transcriptions.
In most cases, this is more sophisticated work than simple data entry. You could work with AI to caption videos, for example. If you’re looking for simple entry-level work this isn’t for you.
How to Avoid Data Entry Job Scams
As I already mentioned, be wary of scams. Here are some tips on how:
- Never agree to pay for any equipment
- Be skeptical of any data entry jobs that seem particularly high-paying
- Do a quick background check on Glassdoor and TrustPilot for sites not listed here
There’s so much info available on the internet these days. There’s really no reason to get scammed as long as you’re thorough about your research and don’t rush into any snap decisions.
How Much Can You Make Doing Data Entry from Home?
The exact amount you can make from data entry depends on two factors: your performance and the type of data entry you’re doing.
Performance
Data entry work is usually paid on a piece-by-piece basis – or by audio minute if you’re doing transcriptions. You’ll rarely earn an hourly wage. This means your earning potential depends heavily on your ability to type quickly and accurately.
The faster you work, the more work you’ll have time to do.
If you’re consistently producing good work, there’s also more chance of a promotion to a reviewer or a better-paying department.
Type of Data Entry
The type of data entry you’re doing dictates your pay, too.
- Microtasks: The least lucrative option is microtasks, where the average pay is just $2 to 3 an hour.
- Traditional Data Entry Websites: On the other end of the spectrum is working with traditional data entry websites; for instance, Axion pays $15 to 19 an hour. Unfortunately, you could spend an entire year on a waiting list before getting a chance.
- Transcription Jobs: Transcription jobs fall somewhere in the middle. A typical wage to transcribe content is around $10 an hour, which is fair, but not life-changing. However, your earning potential could be much higher if you increase your typing speed or if you’re prepared to specialize – legal and medical transcription is a lot more lucrative.
- Data Entry for Large Companies: The ‘other’ section of the data entry jobs is a lot more variable. GorgeWarehouse offers $10.50 an hour, but other companies may offer less. In general, you can assume that large companies looking for remote employees will offer a decent wage, but some FlexJobs postings may be lower.
Start Your Data Entry Career
The biggest pull of data entry is the lack of requirements and low startup costs. However, as we’ve seen, most high-paying data entry employers hire irregularly and require you to stay on their waiting list for an extended period.
Clearly, the idea of being able to make easy money straight away just by becoming a data entry clerk isn’t quite true. You can choose between starting immediately and accepting a minimal salary or waiting for a while and securing a higher salary.
There’s also a third choice – to consider a different online job. As we’ve seen, data entry is closely linked with transcription; specializing can future-proof your job and help you earn more money . There are also many other online jobs available, from online proofreading jobs to website testing to English teaching.
Ultimately, the choice is yours. If you want a stress-free online job, data entry work could be ideal – but make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into first.

- Typing Skills: Data entry requires you to type a large amount of information within a tight deadline. Maintaining a good typing speed while entering accurate information is essential. You should have a speed of 40 words per minute to be eligible for such jobs.
- Computer Proficiency: Online data entry jobs are done through computer devices and programs. You should be able to operate such a device efficiently. Familiarize yourself with MS Excel and Google Sheets to quickly create spreadsheets while on the job.
- Organizational Skills: Jobs related to data entry require you to put the information logically, making organizational skills essential. Additionally, you should prioritize, plan, and execute tasks in an organized way.

Tips to Identify Genuine Online Jobs for Students With No Investment
You may encounter job opportunities that are not legitimate while searching for online data entry jobs. Here are some tips to identify genuine job postings and avoid scams as an applicant:
- Avoid Paying Upfront: If a job requires you to pay upfront for equipment, registration, security, and software, it is most likely a scam. Authentic jobs would not require you to make any upfront investment.
- Be Skeptical of High-Paying Jobs: Usually, data entry jobs have an average pay that is decent enough for the students to earn during their part-time. If you come across a high-paying job, proceed with caution. Fetch the necessary information about the vacancy beforehand and do a quick background check online before accepting the job offer.
- Receiving Job Offer Out of Nowhere: If you receive an email from a company you have not applied for saying there’s an opportunity to work and earn, know that these could be phishing or scam emails. Avoid clicking on links provided in these emails or providing personal information through these emails to ensure security.
- Refuse Money Offers Before the Job: Some scammers offer payment before the job in the form of cheques. Then, they may ask you to pay an individual for work-related expenses. Eventually, the cheque will decline, and you will end up losing your money. So, make sure to refuse such offers. Instead, insist on getting a proper job offer letter with compensation and other employment details.
- Job Listings with Typos and Grammatical Errors: You may come across job listings with several grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors. These are clear signs of fake posting.
As students, data entry jobs are an excellent way for you to begin earning an income while you study. You can apply for any online data entry jobs for students without investment from home, which we have discussed. Apply only through trusted sources and verify the job’s authenticity before submitting your application.

16 Legit Typing Jobs You Can Do from Home
R.J. Weiss, CFP®
- Updated June 16, 2024
Typing is a catch-all phrase when it comes to online job listings, often used as shorthand to describe tasks ranging from data entry to video captioning to transcription (among many others).
And while work at home typing jobs may have started out as a popular business idea for women (and particularly for stay-at-home moms ), today these opportunities are leveraged by people from across the demographic spectrum.
Some online typing jobs pay more than others, and some niches require training, certification, or special equipment. But overall, the field is easy to break into (even if you’re an absolute beginner).
And while there are some scams that you need to watch out for, the fact is that typing is a legitimate online job that can earn you decent money — over $20 per hour, in some cases.
In this article, we’re going to dive into what to look for in typing jobs, what to avoid, and where to find the best opportunities in the field.
Table of Contents
Who Hires Typists?
Many different types of people and organizations hire typists, but two of the most common are doctors and small business owners.
Doctors are sometimes required to provide patient notes to other doctors, lawyers or insurance companies, and handwritten notes are not acceptable.
Rather than spending their time transcribing their notes (which they wouldn’t get paid for), they outsource the work so they can focus on seeing and treating more patients.
Small business owners often find themselves in a similar situation — they may be overwhelmed with paperwork and other correspondence, and focusing on that instead of their core business would be a poor use of their time that would cost them more money than hiring part-time help.
Typing is also sometimes a large portion of the job duties for a virtual assistant .
How Much Do Typists Make?
According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, typists in the United States make $16.22 an hour on average .
However, that means pay ranges from a low of near $10 per hour to a high of around $30 per hour, which is obviously quite a difference.
The amount of money you can command per hour will depend on your level of skill, who you work for (more on that in next section), and whether or not you’re operating within a niche, so it’s a good idea to find one if you want to earn closer to the high end of that range.
Highest Paying Niches Within the Typing Industry
Looking at the typist labor data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, one of the most important factors that determines the amount of money you make is who you work for.
Local government data entry jobs pay an average of $19.22 per hour. That’s much higher than the employment services field, where you’ll find more traditional data entry jobs (such as general office clerks) that pay an average of $15.45 an hour.
Unfortunately, few local government data entry jobs are remote.
Other primary factors in being an above-average earner are your skills and experience. For example, medical transcription work — which most jobs require certification for — pays an average of $16.58 per hour.
Translation work is among the highest-paid niche in the field, with the average rate of $24 an hour .
Full-Time Online Typing Job Sites
Generally speaking, online jobs tend to offer part-time rather than full-time work. That’s certainly true for online typing jobs, especially if you’re just starting out and don’t have a lot of experience.
However, there are a number of sites where you can find either full-time work or piece together a full-time schedule by signing on with multiple clients. Here are a few of the best.
#1. FlexJobs
FlexJobs is one of the best places to find full-time work-from-home jobs in any field, including typing. The site offers freelance, flexible and remote jobs that have all been carefully screened to make sure they’re legitimate opportunities.
Typically, employers are looking for those with at least three years of clerical experience and/or relevant credentials.
FlexJobs is a paid site that charges $14.99 per month. However, you can browse the job listings for free — you just can’t view the application details. So your best bet is to take a look at the site and only sign up if you find opportunities that would be a good fit.
If you do, be sure to use our promo code (WEALTH) to save 30% off your membership. Also, note that you can cancel at any time.

Upwork is the largest and most respected freelance marketplace. You’ll find thousands of jobs on the site, with new postings added every few minutes.
Competition for work can be fierce, and it can be hard to land your first gig. As someone who has both hired and worked extensively on Upwork, here’s a detailed overview of how to get started .
Two quick tips for landing your first gig:
- Look for companies that are hiring only in your location, such as the United States.
- Send a customized proposal to each client. See this page for a three-step freelance proposal template to use when reaching out to clients.
One of the downsides to Upwork is that new freelancers often have to significantly underprice their services. Clients are much less likely to hire you when you have no feedback on the site, so you may need to price yourself aggressively to get a couple of projects under your belt.
Once you do, you’ll find that the site is full of legitimate work and a great place to make money.
Like Upwork, Fiverr is a marketplace that connects freelancers and clients. But there are a couple of important differences between the two sites.
On Upwork, clients post jobs and wait for proposals. But on Fiverr, it’s the other way around — freelancers create “gigs” with set prices and delivery times, which clients can then “order” on demand. When a client places an order, they’ll pay, upload their documents and instructions, and wait for the delivery of their work — you may not even correspond with them during the process.
This model has some advantages and some disadvantages. On one hand, it’s easier to get work when you have minimal experience, because you don’t need to craft a customized pitch for each client — you just need one effective gig posting.
But on the other hand, Fiverr’s clientele tends to be a little bit less professional, as there are many individuals on the site (some of whom have never hired a freelancer before). That means the rates tend to be lower, the work can be harder (because clients don’t always provide clear instructions), and there’s less opportunity to build long-term relationships.
Still, it can be a great way to get your feet wet in freelancing — and many people do make a solid full-time living on the site.

Conduct a quick search on the job site Indeed and you’ll find many different (and often well-known) companies offering work-at-home jobs for roles like online data entry clerks.
These come and go quickly, so it’s best to set up an alert on the site. This way, you’ll get an email any time a new job posting that matches your criteria goes live.
Indeed is the largest job site in the world, which means that postings are not necessarily vetted. Before applying to a job you find on the site, make sure to do some due diligence: research the company on LinkedIn, read through the reviews from current and former employees on Glassdoor, and search Twitter to see what people are saying about the organization.
Companies Hiring Online Typists
There are a number of companies that specialize in hiring people for various kinds of online typing jobs. In most cases, you’ll be hired as an independent contractor rather than as a salaried employee, which means that you won’t be eligible for benefits like health insurance.
In many cases, the pay will also average out to a lower rate than you could earn by working for yourself on Upwork and Fiverr.
However, there’s always a trade-off: what you lose in average pay, you make up for in consistency. In most of the cases below, you’ll have a constant stream of work delivered to you, whereas as a freelancer you’ll have to constantly be on the hunt for new gigs.
#1. AccuTran Global
Quick Summary : AccuTran is primarily a transcription company. If you don’t have a lot of experience, you can still get hired if you score high on the company’s assessment tests. You’re paid per word, and sometimes there are bonuses for more complex jobs.

Experience Needed : Must type at least 70 words per minute and have a strong command of English grammar, punctuation and spelling.
#2. Axion Data Services
Quick Summary : Axion hires typists as independent contractors who want long-term positions and specializes in data entry work. You’ll be paid per project.

#3. DataPlus +
Quick Summary : DataPlus + specializes in data entry and document scanning jobs.
Experience Needed : Because much of the work is done for law enforcement and legal agencies, all employees and independent contractors must be able to pass a background check.
#4. Kendall Creek Communications
Quick Summary : Kendall Creek Communications (formerly called Birch Creek Communications) specializes primarily in transcription, although some jobs are data entry positions. Workers are paid per audio minute.
Glassdoor Rating : 2/5 stars.
Experience Needed : Transcriptionists must have past experience, and an AAERT certification (American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers) is highly recommended.
#5. SigTrack
Quick Summary : SigTrack has an interesting niche: it hires contract data entry workers to process voter registration and petition signatures. Workers are paid per piece.
Experience Needed : You don’t need prior experience but you must be able to prove that you’re a legal resident of the United States. Training is provided.

Glassdoor Rating : 3/5 stars.

Quick Summary : Working Solutions hires independent contractors for data entry jobs in the U.S. and throughout the world. Workers are paid per project.
Glassdoor Rating : 3.6/5 stars.
Experience Needed : Workers must pass a 30-minute employee assessment.
#8. Capital Typing
Quick Summary : Capital Typing is an outsourcing company that provides virtual assistant jobs , including data entry and transcription work (among others). Workers are hired as independent contractors. You’ll be paid per piece.
Glassdoor Rating : 1.5/5 stars.
Experience Needed : Workers must meet the company’s (and the client’s) deadlines and quality standards.
Micro Job Data Entry Opportunities
The term “microwork” refers to tasks that can be completed in just a few seconds or minutes. In most cases, the pay per task is very low. That’s in large part because these tend to be tedious, menial tasks that can be performed by almost anyone with a computer — regardless of their skills or education level.
Still, they are a legit way to make some side income in your spare time — especially if that only comes in short and/or inconsistent bursts.
Plus, you may be able to squeeze more value out of the per-minute payout rate if you have exceptional typing skills (as you’ll be able to work faster than other people).
Learn more : In addition to the options below, check out our list of the best micro job websites .
#1. Clickworker
Clickworker is a marketplace that lets registered workers complete small data entry and translation tasks. To qualify, you must complete and pass a skills assessment. Each task pays $1 (with some exceptions) and can be done anywhere and anytime.
#2. Amazon mTurk
This is a section of Amazon that offers small paid tasks, including data entry. While most tasks pay poorly (many users report making about $2 an hour) they don’t require any experience and can be completed very quickly.
#3. Microworkers
Microworkers offers micro jobs in areas such as data entry, translation and transcription. It’s a marketplace that connects those who need jobs completed and those who want to do the jobs, making it similar to freelancing sites like Upwork and Fiverr.
#4. Scribie
Scribie hires freelancers to transcribe both video and audio files, which are typically short (six minutes or less). Independent contractors earn $10 per hour. Each job is rated on a 1-5 scale, and you must maintain an average score of 2.75 or better to continue working through the company.
Final Thoughts About Online Typing Jobs
Typing is a popular side hustle , as it combines a common skill with high demand. While these characteristics make it easy to get started, they also tend to limit the earning potential within the field.
If you do wish to become a high-earner, it’s best to add additional services correlated with typing and transcription.
One example would be to learn the skills of not just transcribing a podcast, but being able to upload the podcast to a directory like iTunes and create a blog post and show notes for the episode.
Combining multiple in-demand skills allows you to become more sought-after in the marketplace, and it therefore increases your overall earning potential. And while it can take time to learn new skills — especially if you’re starting today without any experience — it’s time well-spent.

What Is Data Entry?
A data entry job is entering data from one source into another using a computer .
This can be nearly anything including typing up information that had previously only be stored in hard copy, but nowadays is more often work like transcription or subtitling.
Some companies have data entry as part of administrative assistant job descriptions but most outsource data entry work.
There is now an entire industry whose business model is to serve as a middleman between these companies and home-based, independent contractors who provide data entry services.
There are job listing websites you can use to find companies who need your help with data entry.
Top Data Entry Job Websites and Companies
While there are plenty of data entry scams, there are also plenty of legit companies that are connecting data entry workers and companies who need their help.
Going through the list below should get you enough data entry work from home clients to fill your schedule, regardless of whether you’re looking for full-time or part-time work .
1. FlexJobs
FlexJobs is one of the biggest platforms for finding work-from-home data entry jobs.
Every job on FlexJobs is vetted so there are zero scam job postings on their job board.
You’ll apply directly to the company that is looking for a data entry specialist and be paid directly by that company.
If you’re looking for entry-level data entry work, Upwork is a great website for you.
There are plenty of jobs for complete novices so you can dip your toe in and see if you like data entry.
You’ll bid on each job individually so you can pick and choose the ones that look appealing to you.
These jobs may not pay much, but they can lead to more lucrative work on the Upwork platform or be leveraged as experience on any of the other platforms.
One of the top freelance marketplaces, Fiverr is a great spot to find lots of work-at-home jobs, including data entry, translation, writing, transcribing, photo editing, and more.
One of the best things about Fiverr is that instead of applying to data entry jobs, clients who need your help will contact you.
4. Clickworker
While signing up for Clickworker is free, you’ll need to fill out your profile and take some tests to see what sort of data entry jobs you qualify for.
Even if you don’t perform well on the tests, if you consistently deliver great work, Clickworker will increase your rating and the number of jobs you get.
Clickworker will pay you either weekly or monthly through PayPal.
5. Amazon Mechanical Turk
Amazon Mechanical Turk is the biggest microtask website and has an abundance of data entry job listings.
You’ll need to register with the site in order to choose HITs (Human Intelligence Tasks) that appeal to you.
Certain tasks may require you to complete a qualifier.
You get paid via Amazon gift card or bank deposit when your work is accepted.
Amazon MTurk does have a few shady tasks among their thousands of available tasks so don’t pick up any HITs that feel suspicious.
Avoid handing over personal details like your address, Social Security number, or bank account information to prevent identity theft fishing and don’t give anyone your phone number or email address to avoid being spammed.
6. SigTrack
Mostly offering seasonal work around the election cycles, SigTrack hires independent contractors to help with voting-related information such as processing voter registration and tracking whether petition signers are voters.
SigTrack workers must maintain at least 98% accuracy to keep their contract and are paid based on accuracy.
SigTrack only hires American citizens and the application process includes a short Skype call to establish your identity.
7. Microworkers
Like Fiverr, Microworkers has a lot of small tasks available, many of which are data entry.
Some of their microtasks even pay better than similar work on other sites.
You’ll only be paid for approved work, but Microworkers will show you the percentage of previous jobs the poster approved, so you don’t waste your time on difficult clients.
Once your $10 payout threshold is met, your earnings from completed jobs will be transferred to your PayPal account.
8. Axion Data Entry Services
Axion Data Entry Services is a platform for experienced data entry contractors who have two or more years of experience and can type 50+ words per minute.
Because Axion deals with highly sensitive information, you’ll be required to pass and pay for a background check, which costs $30.
You’ll also need to pay a listing fee of $5, $7, or $10, depending on how long you’d like to be registered in their database.
While Axion is one of the few platforms that costs money to use, many data entry workers find it to be worth the nominal expense to know all the listings are legitimate data entry jobs , not scams.
9. Working Solutions
While most of the jobs on Working Solutions aren’t data entry jobs, they do pop up occasionally and it’s free to join.
You’ll need to fill out an application and take several assessments.
Working Solutions will contact you within two weeks to let you know whether you’ve been accepted or rejected.
If you’ve been accepted, you can suggest yourself for programs that appeal to you.
(This can be a great way to find virtual assistant or call center jobs, which are both other great ways to bring in extra income.)
10. Scribie
You’ll have to apply to use Scribie to select files, but the process is pretty easy and once you’re accepted, you’ll be able to log in and choose among the available files.
Scribie is one of our favorite transcription jobs, and is pretty easy and simple once you get the hand of it.
Payment is $10 per audio hour to transcribe, which isn’t amazing but isn’t terrible when you’re starting out.
You’ll be paid for completed work via PayPal.
11. The Smart Crowd
The Smart Crowd has several work-from-home careers, many of which are data entry positions.
There is no cost to joining as a service provider, but the pay rate depends on which of the job opportunities you take.
Some jobs pay per task and others pay per hour.
The Smart Crowd was formerly known as VirtualBee.
12. Birch Creek Communications
Birch Creek Communications is a good bet as they’re always looking for high-quality corporate transcriptionists for their corporate clients.
You’ll be transcribing audio files and earning between 40 cents and $1.75 per audio minute, depending on the job, the turnaround time, and the quality of your transcription work.
The Skills and Tools You Need for Data Entry Work
In order to be a successful data entry worker, you will need certain data entry skills and tools.
Office jobs may provide some of the tools but if you’re planning to work at home, you’ll need to already have or be prepared to invest in these tools.
Basic Computer Skills: You’ll need to be able to install new software and keep your computer software up-to-date and your computer virus-free.
Basic Software Skills: You’ll need to know how to use very common software like Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and data recording programs.
Advanced Typing Skills: At their heart, data entry jobs are typing jobs.
You’ll need great typing speed and accuracy, and to be able to check your own work with precise proofreading.
Many sites may ask for your word-per-minute typing rate, or WPM, in order to find out your skills as a typist.
High Level of Tolerance for Repetition: Data entry is a repetitive job so if you get bored by repetition, you’re going to hate data entry work.
High Level of Organization: The goal of data entry is to create coherence out of chaos and you’ll need to be highly organized in order to do so.
Being detail oriented will make this easier for you.
Good Communication Skills: Every job requires you to communicate effectively with your colleagues and this is especially true for work-at-home jobs.
Strong interpersonal skills will help you excel in this role.
Home Computer: You can’t work online without a computer.
Trust us, your tablet or phone won’t run all the software you need for a data entry work.
High-Speed Internet Access: Slow internet will make your work painfully slow and reduce your hourly rate to nothing.
Get fast internet if you don’t already have it.
Common Data Processing Programs: G Suite is free with a Gmail address, which is also free.
Microsoft Office costs money so you may want to wait to invest in that until you have a paying client that requires it.
A Comfortable Desk and Chair: You’re going to be sitting at that desk and in that chair for several hours a day so you should be comfortable.
Find a home office setup that doesn’t negatively impact your posture or your wrist health.
A Resume: Many data entry jobs will require you to submit a resume that details your relevant experience and skills.
Ensure that your resume has these 6 critical sections so that you stand out among the other applicants and earn the job.
Go Forth and Earn
If you have the skills and tools listed above, you’re ready to start looking for a data entry job.
Most data entry jobs have flexible schedules and part-time hours, so they’ll fit nicely around your current work, school, or personal commitments.
If you’re looking for full-time data entry work, all you need to do is stack a few different data entry jobs or tasks and you’ll be earning a full-time income from home in no time.
The hardest thing about a data entry job is finding one, and even that isn’t so hard thanks to the list of sites above.
All you need to do is get started, so do that right now.

Pritam Nagrale
Updated on: 30/01/2023
Whether you are a millennial or a soccer mom, online data entry jobs are for everyone irrespective of social background, educational qualification, age and gender.
They give the opportunity to millions to work from home during this time of the rising pandemic. Earning $12 per hour from home is no more a dream but a new reality in this post-COVID-19 world.
Online data entry jobs allow anyone in this country to work online as a data entry operator and earn well over $12 per hour consistently month after month.
In this article, I’ve mentioned 20 such online data entry jobs that are divided under 8 broader categories of data entry work.
Table of Contents
Top 20 online data entry jobs from home without investment, classic data entry jobs.
Classic data entry jobs have been there for a very long time. All other forms of data entry jobs came much later with the advent of the internet but classic data entry jobs existed long before.
1. Data Entry Keyers
Data Entry Keyers' responsibilities involve accurately extracting pertinent information from all types of documents (like academia, business, legal, medical etc) and typing data into databases like excel spreadsheets or company templates.
Then this data is delivered to the customers.
Data Keyers are also part of quality control where they identify errors in the data and fix them. Data Keyers must have a typing speed of 50 Word Per Minute with a 0% error ratio. Knowledge of MS Excel is also necessary.
On average entry-level Data Keyers can easily earn anything between $10 and $15. But experienced operators can earn even more.
2. Data Entry Clerks
Data Entry Clerks follow specific procedures for completing various repetitive clerical jobs like filing documents in an alphabetical file, posting to individual accounts, calculating and posting to departmental accounts, coding etc.
You must have a High School and 2 years of prior work experience. You also must be familiar with a variety of office software, especially MS Office.
Data entry clerks can also earn up to $15 per hour.
Although a Data entry clerk’s job is quite similar to a Data entry Keyer's but there is a difference. Data entry clerks’ job involves a lot of physical activities standing for long hours or frequently carrying weights up to 20 lbs.
Both these jobs are offline but after COVID – 19 companies allow you to work from home online.
You can easily find these types of jobs on Fiverr . I have written a post here about Fiverr's ‘ best ideas where you can check how people make lots of money by selling data entry jobs services.

Regular Online Data Entry Jobs
The following two online data entry jobs form the bulk of online data entry work.
3. Converting Image to Text
This was my first online data entry job. You will be given image files which is a screenshot of a paragraph that contains medical terminologies.
You have to read from images and write them down in MS Word. A paragraph can be 100 – 150 words long. You have to convert such images into text format.
Here accuracy is very important because words are mainly medical terminologies and not regular English. Usually, data entry companies demand 99.99% accuracy. So, you have to be very careful.
For converting one image file into text format you get $3 – $4. If you convert 25 – 30 such files in a day then you can easily $80 – $100 a day.
This is the most common data entry work you will come across the internet.

4. Converting Audio to Text
Here you convert audio files into text format. You listen to audio files and reproduce them into a Word document.
You will require great listening skills because quite often voice is not clear and may contain many technical jargons. Typing speed is also very important if you want to complete a great number of files daily.
You can call it a transcribing job but it is different from a medical transcriptionist because videos do not include medical jargon.
You can earn well over $5 per file.
Medical Transcriptionist & Medical Coder
Transcriptionist jobs require training and some prior experience. However, transcriptionists earn 4 to 5 times more than other regular data entry workers.
5. Medical Transcriptionist
There is a huge demand for medical transcriptionists in the USA. Companies from the private as well as the public sector are always looking out for experienced medical transcriptionists.
A medical transcriptionist listens to various audio files and converts them into a word file.
These audio files are basically medical files, voice mail messages, phone call recordings, conference calls and other recordings.
The challenge here is a transcriptionist has to listen and type dictations from doctors with thick accents and slur words. Sometimes the voice in the video is not clear.
You need great listening skills and complete familiarity with all the medical jargon. Otherwise, you won’t be able to understand certain words.
To become a transcriptionist , you need training and an experience of at least 2 years. Companies are willing to pay $20 – $25 per hour to medical transcriptionists .
6. Medical Coder
A Medical coder has to read the patient’s health report, analyze his/her medical history such as illnesses being diagnosed, and treatment given and then based on charts & reports transcribe the patient’s medical history.
Medical coders transcribe codes into a “Shorthand” writing style which is then used by doctors, medical professionals and health insurance companies to know patients’ medical history.
This job is not for everyone because you need a certificate or a degree in medical coding. Prior work experience and training is also required.
The salary is the same as a medical transcriptionist.
These two jobs can be called data entry work but they are not for everyone.
Amazon Jobs
7. amazon mechanical turk.
Amazon Mechanical Turk also known as mTurk is one of its kind data entry platform that gives an opportunity to data entry workers across the USA to work online.
mTurk provides you with tasks on behalf of other companies and third-party clients.
At mTurk a task is also called HITs or Human Intelligence Task which you have to complete and submit them.
Basically, there are 3 Types of HITs
- Micro data Entry ( Coming later )
- Surveys ( Coming later )
- Transcription Jobs
For each HIT you are paid just 5 to 10 cents however for surveys you earn more. So, to make more money you have to smartly choose high-paying HITs.
However, you have to qualify first in order to work with mTurk. You have to pass a test before clients give you certain tasks. There are high chances that you might get rejected.
Hence, it is a serious job. Professional data entry operators earn up to $3000 per month by picking high paying HITs only. If you don't get approval in mTurk, then there are other websites like mTurk where you can work.
You can find more Amazon online jobs on SureJob .
Micro Data Entry Jobs
Microdata entry jobs are a collection of various online data entry work.
8. Captcha Solving
You already know what Captchas are, they are images containing texts, numbers and alphanumeric characters used to fill a field given below in order to prevent spamming.
For solving one Captcha file you get paid just 1 to 2 cents. In order to earn a decent amount of money you have to solve thousands of Captchas daily.
If you solve one Captcha in 3 seconds and work for 7 hours then you can easily earn up to $150 daily which is more than $15 per hour. However, you will require a lot of patience and experience to earn this much money.

9. Captioning
Captioning jobs are a bit more advanced than Captcha solving. Here you have to create headings and captions for an image. You need some creativity here. It is just like creating memes on social media.
You write an appropriate heading or a caption for an image. The caption you write must justify the images. With the boom of social media platforms like Instagram, Tik Tok, Twitter captioning jobs are readily available online.
10. Copy & Paste Jobs
As the name says you copy content from one file and paste it to another after doing some formatting.
You will be converting a PDF file into a Word Document or Vice Versa. Excel to Word, Word to Excel. Content can be text, numbers, letters and all other kinds of data.
Usually, you have to copy-paste more than 10,000 words per file. In some copy-paste jobs , you also have to copy and paste data fields like Name, Address, phone number, and email into database suites like MS Access, Oracle, etc.
In some cases, you have to sort data in a given table and paste it into a separate Excel Spreadsheet.
Each company gives specific instructions before you take up the job.
11. Data Formatting Job
Formatting jobs include less typing and more formatting. In a typical formatting job, you will be asked to format content in a Word document. You have to do things like arranging the text into paragraphs, aligning them, creating bulleted lists, indentation, fonts etc.
Another example is formatting a long form that contains various fields like name, email ID, phone number etc. You will be asked to remove gaps and align them properly.
Data entry workers have to format hundreds of files daily to earn $10 – $12 per hour.
Online Form Filling and Survey Jobs
These two data entry jobs are totally different. Let me explain!
12. Online Form Filling
You are provided with a set of huge data and an online form separately. This data is a file containing various fields like Customer Name, Phone No, Email Address, House Address, bank account details, social security number etc.
You have to enter the value from the database into each field of the online form. You have to do it carefully without making any mistakes. This is called online form filling.
By filling out each form, you make money. Earning $50 – $75 a day with form filling job is not that difficult.
13. Online Surveys
Online surveys are different. Here you answer simple as well as tough questions on a particular topic by filling out the survey forms. You have to use your brain to answer these questions. It’s not simply entering values into fields.
A survey can have 5 to 50 questions depending on the topic. Bigger surveys take longer time to complete but you earn more money. Surveys are conducted by companies like Pew, Nielsen, Ipsos etc.
There are professionals in the USA who work full time taking surveys and earn up to $45,000 annually.

Catalogue data entry work differs from other data entry jobs in a way that here data entry operators are trained to work with one particular in-house software of a company.

In both jobs, operators need training in order to familiarize themselves with all the features of the software suite.
Writing Jobs
Calling writing jobs data entry work is a bit unusual. But they are!
16. Web Content Writing
You write simple articles for websites and blogs. Articles are very subjective, too generic and don’t require any research. They are very easy to write.
For an experienced writer, an online writing job is like typing grammatically correct sentences. For 1000 words web content writers earn $30 – $40.
17. Proofreading & Editing
You don’t even have to write. Just proofread the article, correct grammatical and spelling mistakes and also remove typos. You earn the same as content writers.
In both jobs, you just need a fair knowledge of English. That’s it. These two jobs are more like typing jobs .
18. Ad Posting
You have to post ads on different classified sites, blogs and forums. The company will provide you with the ads and various websites where you have to post them. For each Ad posting you do you earn a few cents.
So to earn a decent income, you have to post thousands of ads each month.

By: Author Swati Chalumuri
Posted on Last updated: June 12, 2024
Want to get paid for data entry? For those seeking part-time job opportunities that you can work on in your leisure hours, there are many remote job websites offering legitimate data entry jobs from home.
Companies, these days, are inoperable without a proper record maintained on a digital platform. And, for that, they often seek the services of data entry clerks who have the capability to be meticulous and disciplined.
Data entry jobs are advertised using different designations. So, depending on the job board or company, be on the lookout for vacancies that involve clerical work.
Search phrases and words to try out include data clerks, typists, word processors, researchers, and coders.
It’s also worth noting that online scammers like to lure unsuspecting applicants with data entry jobs. One way to know that such vacancies are real is by their pay rate.
Do not expect clerical work to pay you $40+ per hour . Nope!
These are low-paying jobs perfect for newbies and beginners. That said, the experience you gain here will prime you for expert-level jobs like transcription. More on how to avoid being scammed later in this post.
To get you started, I shall be highlighting legit data entry earning sites and companies offering freelance data entry jobs without investments (free to join).
I will also look into the kind of tasks and pay scale that is typical in clerical work. But first, let’s go through the list of requirements to get you set.
There are sites perfect for data clerk newbies without any experience. Here we are talking about platforms and companies that do not ask for proof of prior work in the collection, processing, or management of data.

Data Entry Jobs Requirements
For you to be considered for a data entry gig, there are several requirements that should be met. The major is access to a reliable laptop or desktop computer with a steady internet connection.
Note that not all tasks need you to be connected to the internet at all times. Some data entry jobs just need you to download documents and fill in templates offline, then submit them for pay.
Other requirements include:
- Be fast and accurate in typing. This is because you will be required to deliver on time. The typical data entry typing speed is 45 words per minute. This is a pretty low speed, considering that other online jobs such as transcription require 60wpm or more to complete.
- Your grammar should be perfect with no typing errors. Expect accuracy levels of up to 90% in some tests.
- MS office and advanced MS Office skills in Word, PowerPoint, publisher document, access database, and excel
- Design skills for a better presentation. This is, usually, optional but can be the skill that earns you more than other applicants.
- Have a better understanding of Google Docs and Drive as presentation tools
- A phone that will be used for business purposes only. This is also optional though some data entry tasks can easily be done on the go, on a phone, or tablet.

Data Entry Jobs from Home: FAQS
1. do online data entry jobs really pay.
Online data entry jobs can pay you more than 12 dollars per hour.
The trick is to just be consistent in your work and available to handle short-term deadlines. It also pays to do due diligence while starting out to avoid getting scammed.
As a guide, read online reviews to have a feel of the work-life balance and remuneration from a prospective employer.
2. Can You Do Data Entry with No Experience?
Absolutely yes, m ost of the data entry jobs sites above offer jobs to entry-level workers.
Other than a stable internet, all you need is a typing speed of 45 – 60 wpm and accuracy levels of 90% and above to get hired.
There is usually no need for special or premium software for this type of clerical work.
3. Are Data Entry Jobs from Home Legit?
Home-based data entry gigs are a major income earner for freelancers.
The jobs are legit and result from businesses and organizations that legally outsource their data collection, processing, and management tasks.
Note that, in most cases than not, data entry jobs offer to pay that is lower than the market price. So, if any site offers anything over and above the market price, then it’s definitely a scam.
4. How Do I Get a Data Entry Job from Home?
Wondering how to get legitimate data entry jobs from home ? Here is the best way to get started.
Start working as a freelance transcriber. This will help you improve your typing speed which will fast-track you to becoming an expert transcriptionist as well as an expert data entry typist. Steps to take include:
- First, create a personal account for any of the sites discussed above. And, to increase your chances of earning more, create accounts on several platforms.
- Next, start looking for online beginner-level data entry jobs available for you.
- Being a first-timer with zero experience, ensure that you read the job requirements thoroughly to avoid disqualifications for not meeting their requirements.
- When you land your first-time data entry job, ensure that the task is completed before the deadline and it’s without any errors. This will attract return customers as well as build up your profile from positive client reviews.
- Finally, make a list of all the jobs you have booked to attempt to avoid due dates confusion.
5. How To Avoid Getting Scammed with Data Entry Jobs?
As earlier noted, data entry jobs are some of the popular ways through which beginner freelancers get scammed .
One of the major reasons behind this is that the entries you work on are almost never available online after processing.
The data also happens to be just a series of numbers or words that, for security reasons, do not come with any identifying info for you to tie back to the originating business/company.
Simply put, once you submit the completed work and the agency refuses to pay, you have virtually no way of claiming your dues.
The best way to avoid getting scammed from platforms that offer data entry jobs online is to identify them at the onset. Here are some red flags to be on the lookout for:
- Avoid websites that ask for registration fees before getting a job. It doesn’t work that way! Registration is and should be absolutely free!
- Keep off platforms asking you to pay any administrative fees or pay for software/tools and access to online tests
- Watch out for sites that ask you to pay for a course or training before getting the chance to work with them
That said, most leading freelance sites do charge some fees. For example, Upwork and Fiverr charge 20%. The amount is meant for payment protection as well as promotion services.
And to be clear, the charge is deducted from your account after – not before – the job has been approved and paid.
