Assessment Presentations

Students are also sometimes required to make a Dissertation Presentation as part of their overall assessment . They will then be asked questions by the examiners in a somewhat lengthy oral examination. 5. Transition, transition, transition

Use transition slides to connect projects , it's a long presentation with different research projects. you want to use some sort of transition to remind your audience what you have been talking about and what is next. you may use a slide that is designed for this purpose throughout your presentation. , below are two examples. these slides were presented after the introduction section. the presenters used the same slides and highlighted the items for project one to indicate that they were moving on to the first project. throughout the presentation, they used these slides and highlighted different sections to indicate how these projects fit into the whole dissertation. .

You can also use some other indications on your slides, but remember not to make your slides too busy.  Below are two examples. In the first example, the presenter used chapter numbers to indicate what he was talking about. In the second example, the presenter used a progress bar with keywords for each chapter as the indicator.

Use transition sentences to connect slides 

Remember transition sentences are also important; use them to summarize what you have said and tell your audience what they will expect next. if you keep forgetting the transition sentence, write a note on your presentation. you can either write down a full sentence of what you want to say or some keywords., 6. be brief, put details in backup slides , you won't have time to explain all of the details. if your defense presentation is scheduled for 45 minutes, you can only spend around 10 minutes for each project - that's shorter than a normal research conference presentation focus on the big picture and leave details behind. you can put the details in your backup slides, so you might find them useful when your committee (and other members of the audience) ask questions regarding these details., 7. show your presentation to your advisor and colleagues, make sure to ask your advisor(s) for their comments. they might have a different view on what should be emphasized and what should be elaborated. , you also want to practice at least once in front of your colleagues. they can be your lab mates, people who work in your research group, and/or your friends. they do not have to be experts in your field. ask them to give you some feedback - their comments can be extremely helpful to improve your presentation. , below are some other tips and resources to design your defense presentation. .

How to Pull Off Your Thesis Defense With a Great Presentation

You’ve reached the home stretch in your journey toward your post-graduate degree. You’ve diligently studied, researched and performed for years, and all that’s left is your master thesis or doctorate dissertation. 

“ All that’s left,” however, might be the understatement of the century. There’s nothing simple about orally defending your thesis, and this final stage often means the difference between a degree and a program that remains incomplete.

Even after you’ve dedicated months filled with blood, sweat and tears defining your argument, researching your support and writing your defense, you aren’t ready to address the academic panel. You still have to design an effective visual presentation, and the slide deck can make or break your entire thesis.

1.   Properly structure your slide deck

Every master thesis defense presentation is unique, but most effective slide decks will follow a similar structure, including:  

  • Title - Just like a research paper, your thesis presentation must include a title slide. This should include the same information as any other title page: the title, your name, your academic institution, course name and the name of the academic advisor to your thesis or dissertation. Here you want to describe the type of study— whether it’s quantitative, qualitative or a combination of the two, as well as an explanation of why you chose the method or methods you used. If you conducted original research, you will want to detail the study population, sampling methods and other details pertinent to your studies, while you’ll also want to detail how you analyzed your data.
  • Results - No thesis presentation slide deck is complete without dedicating slides to illustrate the results of your research. Be sure to include a description of any data you collected through your research, as well as the results of your analysis of the data. What were your most significant findings?
  • Discussion - How do the results of your research support your overall thesis argument? Be sure to include slides that discuss your overall findings and how they relate to your original question.
  • Conclusion - Concluding slides should restate your original research questions, represent the results of your research, suggest future research and make any final recommendations.
  • Ending slide – Close your thesis presentation with a concluding slide that offers an interesting quote or trivia that makes your audience further ponder your topic, a GIF or animation that recaptures the audience’s attention or even a hypothetical question that opens additional discussion from the academic panel. This is your opportunity to make your presentation memorable.

Thesis presentation and dissertation are two terms often used in academic settings related to upper education. While they are related, there are distinct differences between the two, which is important to understand as you begin to structure your thesis defense.

  • Your audience is human : In other words, they may be tired, they might be wondering why they’re there, and they will, at some point, be tuning out.   • Less is more: You want to give enough information to make your audience want to read your paper. So include details, but not too many, and avoid too many formulas and technical jargon.
  • Clean and professional : Avoid excessive colors, distracting backgrounds, font changes, animations, and too many words. Instead of whole paragraphs, bullet points with just a few words to summarize and highlight are best.

As part of the dissertation process, you will need to create a dissertation proposal defense PowerPoint to present a summary of the plan for your study. You will need to show how important your study is and how it is useful. 

When creating the PowerPoint, keep in mind that you need to make sure all of your audience can understand all aspects of your study.  The exact content for the defense PowerPoint varies by college, discipline and department, so it is important that you discuss with your committee chair about the requirements. However, we will give some general guidelines that apply to most institutions.

The defense typically takes 20‐30 minutes. You should keep the timeframe in mind as you consider the information you will have in your presentation. 

Except for aspects of your presentation, such as the research question(s) or hypothesis(es), do not just read the slides. Instead, explain or expand on what is on the slides. To ensure you keep within the timeframe, practice narrating your PowerPoint presentation. 

Although the APA manual does not provide guidelines for creating a PowerPoint presentation, you will need to follow some of the APA style guidelines within your PowerPoint. 

For example, provide in-text citations for quotes, paraphrases, images, graphs, and other information that should be cited. Also, you will need to provide a list of pertinent references.

The following are other format requirements for the slides :

  • Create 17-20 slides.
  • Do not provide a lot of information. Be concise and write a few sentences (approximately 1-7 on each slide). 
  • Because your slides will contain only a small amount of information, any extra information that you want to touch on should be put in the notes section of the PowerPoint. 
  • Write the information in your slides for visual appeal and optimum communication, using a legible font size. 
  • You can use graphics and images to enhance and reinforce the information. However, ensure that they do not distract from your information.
  • You can use bullet points but keep them to a minimum of 3-4 for each listing.

Example Dissertation Proposal Defense PowerPoint Format

The dissertation proposal will consist of three chapters, which you will be providing information on in the presentation. Although the contents and order of the contents may vary, there are some basic parts of the proposal that are usually required.  

The following is a breakdown of the usual contents that are included in the presentation. Each of these headings below represents the titles of each slide. The information below the headings is the type of content you will need to provide. 

Title (1 slide) : 

  • Dissertation’s Title 
  • Department of Program of Study/Name of University
  • Chair and Committee Members

Statement of the Problem (1 slide):

  • Provide the problem that your dissertation will address. 

Purpose of the Study (1 slide):

  • Provide what the study will do relative to the issue(s) defined in the statement of the problem.

Significance of the Study (1 slide):

  • Provide the main argument of why the solution to the problem that you propose is important. 

Research Question(s)/Hypothesis(es ) (1 slide):

  • Provide the research question(s) or hypothesis(es) relevant to your field of study, written exactly as it is in your dissertation proposal.

The Literature Review (2 slides):  

  • These slides should consist of a coherent, organized overview of the main literature that frames your study’s problem, and the gap in literature that your study will address. Make sure that you include the sources. 

Theoretical/Conceptual Framework (1 slide):

  • This slide should consist of the theoretical/conceptual framework that will help you make sense of the phenomenon that you will investigate. 

Research Design (1 slide):

  • Provide the framework for the methods of data collection and data analysis. Indicate whether the study will be quantitative or qualitative.

Sample and Population (1 slide):

  • Provide the population that refers to the entire group that you will draw conclusions about, and the sample that refers to the specific group that you will collect data from.

Data Collection (1 slide):

  • Provide the methods by which you will obtain the data. If the research design is quantitative, provide methods such as correlation and regression, mean, mode and median or others. If the design is qualitative, provide methods such as, interviews, questionnaires with open-ended questions, focus groups, observation, game or role-playing, case studies, or others.

Data Analysis (1-2 slides):

  • This slide should contain the process you will use to understand, gather, compile, and process the data you will obtain.

Limitations (1 slide):

  • In this slide, explain the nature of the limitations and how they will be overcome during your research. 

Delimitations (1slide):

  • Provide the characteristics that describe the boundaries of your study and limit the scope, such as sample size, geographical location, population traits, or others.

References (1-2 slides):

  • Only provide those sources that you referred to in the presentation. Do not provide all the sources that you have in your dissertation proposal.

Thank You/Questions (1 slide):

  • Use this final slide to thank your committee and to request questions from them.

How to Create a Dissertation Presentation

While writing your dissertation is a Herculean task, the work isn’t quite over once the dissertation is finished. In many disciplines, a dissertation presentation is required as part of the dissertation defense . This thorough, comprehensive presentation is your opportunity to demonstrate the depth and validity of your research in a clear and compelling way. 

Before you begin working on your dissertation presentation, you’ll want to do some homework about the expectations for your presentation. Consult your dissertation advisor and ask for your department or university’s guidelines for the dissertation presentation. It may also be helpful to review dissertation presentations made by recent graduates of your doctoral program.

What Is a Dissertation Presentation?

A dissertation presentation is usually a 10-15 minute overview of your dissertation research that focuses on the study and findings recorded in chapters four and five of your dissertation. The dissertation presentation consists of 9-12 slides made using PowerPoint or another type of presentation software. 

There are conventions to adhere to when creating the dissertation presentation, and each slide serves a specific purpose. The presentation slides offer in-depth insight into the data gathered during the study, as well as any conclusions you may have reached. These slides give you an opportunity to explore the data and discuss the significance of your study and its findings. 

Dissertation Presentation vs. Dissertation Defense

While the culminating moment of a doctoral degree has long been the dissertation defense, many disciplines and programs now prefer for candidates to complete a dissertation presentation. Done in lieu of or in addition to a traditional defense, a dissertation presentation is made distinctive by its inclusion of visual elements such as charts, graphs, or images. 

Dissertation presentations are also a pragmatic approach during the era of online programs and Zoom. While a dissertation defense is powered by an oral defense and discussion with the dissertation committee, a dissertation presentation offers a strategic way to plan and structure the conversation. A dissertation presentation also affords you the opportunity to show the narrative arc of your progression from asking the question, searching the literature, creating the study, and evaluating your findings.

Dissertation Presentation Structure

Storytelling is a great way to think about how you will approach your dissertation presentation. Show the linear development of your topic and offer a clear and concise snapshot of the work you’ve done. Bear in mind that brevity is important; slide space is limited, so you’ll want to keep it short and sweet. 

The structure of your dissertation presentation will roughly follow your table of contents, which will serve as a map for crafting your slides. The first half of your dissertation presentation slides will mirror your dissertation proposal, or the first three chapters of your dissertation. Slides within your dissertation presentation should include: 

  • Problem Statement Write a sentence or two outlining the problem and why it caught your attention. 
  • Literature Review Offer observations about the general consensus of existing research on or related to your topic, as well as gaps in the literature–particularly those bridged by your research study. 
  • Purpose of the Study This statement should reflect the purpose statement in your dissertation .
  • Research Questions Include your primary question as well as secondary questions that resulted from gaps in the literature. 
  • Sample and Population/Instrumentation This would be a good place to include graphics or other visual elements.

The second half of the slides in your dissertation presentation will be grounded specifically in the fourth and fifth chapters of your dissertation. These slides will include information about your data collection, analysis, and findings. You can also include an image or two relevant to your research (especially if you have pictures from the field or lab) and personal experience. 

  • Data Collection and Analysis Include charts or graphs that illustrate your research on this slide. 
  • Research Findings It may be difficult to abridge dozens of pages of results, but try to summarize your findings in a sentence or two. A table may be the best way to present your results. 
  • Implications Now we’re getting to the good stuff! You’ve offered a thorough overview of the research you did; take the opportunity to highlight why it matters. What dark corner of your discipline is now illuminated because of the work you’ve done? 
  • Recommendations As a now-bona fide scholar in the field, this is a place for you to offer recommendations for further research. Identify two or three more research questions that you encountered during the course of your research. What is the next chapter of this story? 
  • Abstract Compose a 100-150 word abstract for your dissertation . Follow the format of a journal article. This will come in handy for submissions to conferences and journals (the next step on your academic journey!). 
  • Acknowledgements A quick ‘thank you’ never hurts–feel free to copy your acknowledgements from your dissertation. Don’t forget to thank your committee. 
  • Questions Use the final slide of your dissertation presentation to open the floor for questions from your dissertation committee.

Additional Considerations

Though it is first and foremost a professional document, the dissertation presentation also offers you an opportunity to showcase your style as a scholar. Design your slides for optimum communication and visual appeal. Use graphics and images that reinforce the overarching message of your dissertation. These visual cues will serve as compelling support for your overall narrative, and each one should enhance your dissertation committee’s understanding of your topic, findings, and analysis. 

In addition to graphics and images, think carefully about the aesthetic of your dissertation presentation. Prize high-impact verbiage that gets to the heart of your topic without crowding your slides. Give yourself enough time to draft and revise each slide; it’s not a bad idea to get a second set of eyes on your dissertation presentation, as well as constructive feedback. Remember, this is your final chance to make a lasting impression on your dissertation committee –give them a presentation they won’t soon forget.

A Quick Guide to Presenting an Online Master’s Thesis

It’s often said that your Bachelor’s degree represents a broad field of study, while the Master’s degree is your opportunity to focus on a specific part of that field of study. It’s your chance to become an expert in something. The Master’s Thesis is the way you show your professors, peers, and the world your new expertise. 

Traditionally, Master’s degree students present theses to a committee of professors and researchers, in front of peers, friends, and family. However, as globalization grows and global pandemics affect the world, we’ve had to adjust to a new concept of presentation: the online thesis defense.

Before we get too far into the specifics of presenting Master theses, let’s make sure we’re all on the same page. 

Master’s Degree Versus Bachelor’s Degree

Like we mentioned above, your Master’s degree is a narrowing focus compared to what you studied in your Bachelor’s degree. In fact, you don’t always have to get your Master’s degree in the same exact field as your Bachelor’s degree. Many universities value a demonstrated interest and base knowledge in a certain field over a Bachelor’s degree in that field on paper, but little passion for the subject. 

That being said, the Master’s degree will always be more specific. It will require you to already have a general understanding of the field. If you’re looking to study a little of everything related to a field or industry, then a Bachelor’s degree will probably serve you better.

Most Common Master’s Degrees

Some of the most common Master’s Degrees in the United States include the MBA Degree (Master’s of Business Administration), Computer Science, Master of Marketing, Master’s in Financial Management, Doctor of Education (Ed.D) , and Master of Education.

How Important is the Master’s Thesis to the Degree?

Depending on your specific program, the thesis will be a very important hoop to jump through or it will be the endeavor that the entire program revolves around.

The subject you choose for the thesis will depend on what you and your faculty advisor decide. Ideally, it will be a subject that you are extremely passionate about, since you will be spending the next couple years joined at the hip with it.

Make sure you don’t confuse thesis and dissertation. The thesis is what you conduct for a Bachelor’s degree or, more commonly, a Master’s degree. Dissertations are the even larger undertakings required for a PhD.  

How Big is the Master’s Thesis?

Average theses range between 60 – 100 pages and roughly 20,000 – 20,000 words . Beyond the page count, many Master’s theses involve some kind of research and/or experimentation that you’ll base the entire document on. Some Master’s programs will devote much of the second year of study to preparing for and writing your thesis. For some students, they’ll work on their thesis only after they’ve completed the rest of their program. 

How to Structure your Master’s Thesis

After you’ve conducted the research and executed the experiment at the heart of your thesis, you’ll work on putting it all on paper. Generally speaking, you’ll follow this outline: title page, introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusions. After you’ve done all the work to prepare for your thesis, conduct the research, and write it out, all that’s left is to present it to your committee and get final approval. This presentation is often seen as the ultimate representation of your new expertise in your field of study. It’s the final requirement needed to graduate with your Master’s degree.

Online Versus Live Thesis Presentation

Online thesis presentations have been occurring more frequently over the last decade, as online Master’s programs have risen in popularity. Additionally, in 2020 and 2021 the need and preference for online thesis defenses exploded, due to the global pandemic. It has been more important than ever to prepare a solid online presentation that will make sense, effectively demonstrate the important aspects of your thesis, and visually engage your thesis committee. 

Online thesis defenses are very different from live presentations. For one, your voice and body language carries less weight in an online thesis presentation. For another, your thesis PPT will consume more of your viewer’s attention compared to live, where you more easily dominate the stage.

Good Practices for Online Master’s Thesis Presentations

We’ve shared some tips for how to present your thesis PPT during a live defense . Here, we’ll adjust those tips for an online thesis defense.

Online Tip #1 – Don’t skip the introduction

It’s very natural to introduce yourself and your thesis when presenting live. When online, however, we tend to feel more awkward because we can’t physically relate to the people in our audience. Overcome this discomfort by practicing a solid introduction of both yourself and your thesis title and basic concept. 

Online Tip #2 – Avoid reading thesis notes or a script 

It might be tempting to read notes or write yourself a detailed script when presenting a thesis online since your audience can’t see what’s beyond your webcam view. However, we urge you to not do this. Taking the time to memorize your thesis defense will ensure a much more natural presentation than if you’re reading it off of a second screen. 

Online Tip #3 – Speak clearly and enunciate

We all know how difficult it can be to understand people during online presentations, especially if the web connection isn’t perfect. You don’t have any control over the quality of connection or speaker that your audience has, but you can do your best to be understandable by speaking clearly, enunciating your words, and not speeding up. However, be careful when speaking slower. Make sure you still add sufficient emphasis and inflection to your presentation to avoid droning on. 

Online Tip #4 – Be prepared for internet interruptions 

There is absolutely nothing worse than getting into a good rhythm on your presentation, only to realize that the internet has cut out and you’ve lost your audience. Don’t let this kind of interruption faze you. Don’t let it make you lose your nerve or train of thought. 

First, make sure you are presenting your thesis in an environment that is quiet, private, and has the best internet connection possible. If an interruption in the internet does happen, don’t lose your cool. Keep calm and wait for the internet to return. Write your faculty advisor immediately, explaining what is happening. 

Once your internet connection returns, backtrack to a good re-starting point as opposed to picking up where you left off. This will help you get back into the rhythm of presenting, as well as make sure your audience is able to follow along. The key is remaining calm and not getting embarrassed. Everyone knows what it is like to suddenly lose internet connection! It’s a part of our daily lives now. Just continue on as best as possible.

Online Tip #5 – Make your PPT even more engaging for an online thesis presentation

Often, when one member of an online meeting or presentation is sharing their screen, the screen with their webcam view becomes smaller, while the PPT becomes the focus. There is a fine balance here. You don’t want your thesis defense PPT to take over the presentation. You, or at least your voice and words, should always be the main focus. Nevertheless, technology is what it is. This is the way online presentations are currently set up. That means your thesis PPT must be very good, because it will be noticed.

How to Elevate your Master’s Thesis Online PPT

With so much pressure on your PowerPoint during an online thesis defense, you’ll want to make it as professional as possible. Here are some guidelines for setting up your thesis PPT.

Avoid putting too much information on each slide

You don’t need to fit your entire thesis document on your PPT. Add main points and outline only. This will keep your audience by getting overwhelmed with too much information at once. It will let you keep control over the order that information is presented. Finally, it keeps their attention on you and your presentation, as opposed to reading the slide.

Use infographics to demonstrate results 

Charts, graphs, and infographics are excellent ways to do more “showing” and less “telling”. Even if your audience doesn’t completely grasp the significance of the numbers you are talking about, they can understand if the line on your graph increases or decreases. They can see the comparison between two factors in the height of your bars.

Use high quality images 

Depending on the subject of your Master’s thesis, the images will be a main point or will just be adornment. Either way, use high resolution images so they don’t appear blurry or pixelated in the presentation.

Stick to a single design style and theme

Your presentation will be so much more professional if you follow a single design style and theme instead of mixing colors, fonts, and text sizes. Similar to business branding guidelines , your thesis presentation should have a consistent color palette, font, and appearance.

How to Nail Your Dissertation Presentation

When you are in your final year of university, you will probably have to produce a dissertation. Therefore it is often the case that at some point or other, you will need to make a presentation of your research.

Hopefully, this will not be your first presentation, but if it is, have no fear, as we have some tips to help you out.

Tip 1: Presentation preparation – don’t leave it to last minute A presentation is different from other pieces of work: if you have not sufficiently prepared, you have nowhere to hide. The best course of action is not to leave it until the last minute. This means you will not have to rush making the slides, and you can practise sufficiently. Remember that proper preparation prevents poor performance! You should start the presentation at least 2 weeks in advance.

Tip 2: Template design Instead of using one of the generic inbuilt PowerPoint templates, have a quick look at our free PowerPoint templates, and tie in a colour scheme or theme. This will help you stand out from the crowd by having a memorable presentation for a good reason. There are often a few marks available for a well-designed presentation, so it is a no-brainer that it looks nice.

For example, for her dissertation, a friend of mine investigated the different yeasts used to make beer, so she used the template of a beer bottle.

Tip 3: Structure Follow the sections of your dissertation, and allow roughly a minute to speak about each slide. If you have a time limit, such as a 15-minute presentation with a questions section at the end, give yourself 12 minutes for the presentation and 3 minutes for the questions. From this you know that you need roughly 12 slides.

Tip 4: Keep the slides simple Make sure that the audience understand what you have done but don’t be tempted to overload the slides with text, because they will not bother to read them and may switch off. A way to keep it simple and interesting is to use key diagrams and pictures and explain what they mean. If you have already written your dissertation try starting with an introductory slide, followed by a brief background, the methods, results and data, and lastly your conclusions. If you are yet to write it up, try the following points as a structure.

  • A bit of background
  • What you used
  • What happened
  • Why it happened

Tip 5: Get rid of the jargon You may be talking to your peers but that does not mean that they know what the specific technical words are. When you are preparing, try to visualise talking to yourself before you started the research for your project. What did you know? What would you not understand? Even better would to be to go over it with a course mate, because if they don’t understand the terminology then the likelihood that your audience will not understand is high! You don’t need to use the same terminology as your thesis.

For example, instead of: “I investigated the functional properties of the TREK-1 K2P channels as target for intestinal motility disorders.” you can get rid of as much technical jargon as possible, and explain it in a more day-to-day way. “I looked at a subtype of ion channels called TREK-1, to see if they could be used to treat bowel diseases.” Not only is it easier to hear, it is easier to say!

Tip 6: Use the mark scheme For undergraduate research presentations there is often a mark scheme available to you, so make sure you use it. It will often give specific instructions of what should be on there, such as the university logo and your student number. This will mean that you will not lose silly marks for these small things.

Tip 7: Nerves Remember that everybody can get nervous when giving a presentation. Check out our article on tips to control your nerves. If you are presenting to fellow students, remember they are just like you! They will be in the same boat and will understand that you are nervous.

Tip 8: Practise out loud They say that you are your own worst critic, so use it to your advantage. This will enable you to find any gaps in your presentation and your own knowledge.

Film yourself doing the presentation as a dry run. Ask yourself if what you are saying is correct, and whether it makes sense. This will not only help with the content, but you will get an idea for time management.

Tip 9: Time yourself As you practise your presentation, time yourself on your phone. Then you will know how to pace yourself: whether to speed up or slow down. This will also help you work out if you need more or less content in your slides.

Tip 10: Present to your course mates Next, get hold of a course mate and present it to them. They will see any mistakes that you have on your slides, such as typos, and can give you an idea of questions that may be asked. Ask them to grill you on anything they don’t understand. It is recognised that teaching a subject is one of the best ways to learn. So by presenting to a course mate, in effect you will learning your presentation.

Tip 11: Managing the questions Take a few seconds to think about what you know and answer truthfully. Avoid making anything up. Whoever is questioning you wants you to demonstrate your extra knowledge and understanding. In most cases they don’t want to catch you out, especially if you are being assessed by lecturers, who want you to do well because it reflects on them.

Office of Graduate Education and Life announces Three-Minute Thesis finalists

3-Minute Thesis

Ten doctoral students will compete in the grand finale beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, in the Mountainlair Ballrooms as five faculty and staff members judge for first, second and third place winners. 

The WVU community is also invited to attend and vote for the People’s Choice Award.

The internationally renowned 3MT competition, originally founded by the University of Queensland in Australia, challenges doctoral students to present their research topic and its significance in three minutes using a single PowerPoint slide. 

Competitors develop academic, presentation and research communication skills while gaining experience pitching their research succinctly to a non-specialist audience.

Keep it short and sweet: a guide on the length of documents that you provide to Copilot

When you write Copilot prompts, you can include information or samples  - the source for Copilot to use.  For example, you can ask Copilot in Word: Write a marketing plan outline based on the product features described in this document.  But to get the best output from Copilot, it’s important to consider the length of the content you provide to Copilot, as there are limits to the size of documents that Copilot can read at once.

You probably see that there is a 2000-character limit when you type in your prompts to Copilot. But it seems that you can reference documents of any size with Copilot because there are no reminders on file size limits when you do so.

Behind the scenes, however, there is a limit for the size of the document that you can refer to with Copilot. Depending on the type of tasks you give Copilot, there are times that Copilot will focus only on the beginning of the document (up to its limits) and then ignore anything beyond that. For example, when you ask a question about a specific topic in a long document, document length typically will not impact the ability to get a result based on how the Large Language Models (LLMs) reason over the content. But if you ask for a summary of a long document, the task requires the entire document context to inform the output. For the latter case, length limits do come into play and impact output.

For scenarios where the entire document context is needed for Copilot to provide answer, a couple of good rules of thumb on the length of the document you provide to Copilot: 

Shorter than 20 pages: Try to keep the length of the document you refer to under 20 pages. This is a comfortable length for Copilot to handle.

Around 15,000 words or less: For those who love word counts, aim to stay at or below 15,000 words. This is a sweet spot for Copilot to work effectively.

While we are working on functionality that allows you to point Copilot to a specific section or page range in a document, that experience does not exist today.

These recommended limits indicate that content is too long for Copilot to fully process. Different languages will have slight variations in these limits, so you may need to adjust the page or word limits based on the language you use.

Keeping documents you provide to Copilot within these size limits helps Copilot read and respond to your documents accurately and effectively. If your document is longer than these limits, Copilot might still be able to help, but it'll focus only on the first part of your document. It would be like reading only the first few chapters of a book and trying to guess the rest (which is what Copilot ends up doing in this case).

Important:  While these page/word limits are currently a good rule of thumb, we are constantly working to expand Copilot's capabilities, and these limits will increase over time. When they do, this page will be updated to reflect any changes. 

Tips for Longer Documents 

Here are some ways that you can use longer documents with Copilot: 

Break It Down : If you have a long document, consider splitting it into smaller documents and providing them to Copilot separately. This way, Copilot can handle each part effectively.

Summarize in Parts : For long reports or manuscripts, you can try summarizing them in chunks with Copilot. Today you can do that by copying/pasting chunks into separate documents and summarizing sections separately. This helps Copilot to give you more precise and relevant responses.

When using Copilot, think of it as having a conversation with your friend. You wouldn't discuss a whole encyclopedia at once, right?  Similarly, keep your document references concise and to the point for the best experience with Copilot.

USM Honors College Students Present Thesis Research at Marketing Conference

Marketing Theory and Practice Conference

University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Honors College students Haeden Overby and Patrick Tyson presented their thesis research during the 2024 Association of Marketing Theory and Practice Conference (AMTP) held earlier this month in Hilton Head, S.C.

Overby, a hospitality and tourism management major, and Tyson, an anthropology, sociology, and Spanish major, presented individual research papers, as well as a collaborative project, at the international and interdisciplinary academic marketing conference which brings together academic theory and real-world marketing practices.

This year’s conference saw more than 100 submissions. Of the 33 student paper submissions across undergraduate, Master's, and Ph.D. levels, Overby’s thesis paper – “Service robots’ effect on branding and consumers' intentions through online reviews” - won the James E. Randall Best Student Paper Award. 

“Haeden and Patrick are exceptional students in my class. Their passion for research and dedication to their thesis projects have impressed me,” said Dr. Wei Wang, Associate Professor, Hospitality and Tourism Management Program Coordinator who served as both students’ thesis advisor. “Moreover, their active involvement and leadership roles on campus exemplify their commitment to excellence beyond academics,”

Tyson presented a research paper titled, “Uncertainty avoidance moderation over film-motivated tourists' views on destination image, place attachment, and intentions.”

Collaboratively, they presented a paper titled, “Cookies and calamari: Squid Game’s “Dalgona” and cutting shapes from its impact on Korean product purchase and travel intentions.”

“My advisors, Dr. Wei Wang and Dr. Banu Bas, have been incredibly patient teaching me about the research process, and I would not have been able to succeed without their support,” said Overby. “Dr. Randall is retiring from the AMTP conference this year, and the award was named after him for the first time. I am pleased to be the first recipient of the award under his name and am incredibly thankful I had the chance to meet him when I was presented the award.”

Added Overby, “This accomplishment has become great motivation to continue my research in marketing and to cross the finish line of submitting my thesis. I am glad to bring home a new award for Southern Miss Business!"

While PowerPoint has more features, Google Slides offers seamless collaboration, cross-platform availability, and an easy-to-use interface without a subscription. When you receive a PowerPoint presentation, convert it to Google Slides to continue editing and collaborating on it.

Converting a PowerPoint presentation to the Google Slides format has advantages, but it isn't a smooth process. Formatting issues can occur. You can use Google Drive or Google Slides to convert a PowerPoint presentation. This trick is also helpful when using a PowerPoint template with Google Slides.

Although Google Slides has apps for iPhone and Android , we focus on the company's web version.

Convert a PowerPoint to Google Slides Using Google Drive

You can upload a PowerPoint presentation to Google Drive and open it in Slides. It's the easiest way to convert from PowerPoint to Google Slides.

  • Visit Google Drive on the web and sign in with your Google account details.
  • After uploading the file, Google Drive converts your PowerPoint file, making it compatible with Google Slides. Double-click it to open it in Google Slides.

Whether you use a .pptx or an older .ppt file, Google Drive automatically converts it to Slides. You can open it like a traditional Slides file and make changes.

How to add audio to your Google Slides presentation

If you don't want to deal with Google Drive, you can import and use any PowerPoint file using Google Slides. Follow the steps below to make changes.

  • Go to Google Slides on the web and create a blank presentation. Or, type slides.new in the address bar and press the Enter or Return key.

  • Google Slides converts and opens a PPT file in the Slides format.

There are times when you want to convert specific PowerPoint slides. Importing an entire presentation and deleting irrelevant slides isn't the most productive way. Instead, import selected slides using the steps below.

  • Open a blank presentation in Google Slides (check the steps above).

How to Record Customized Camera Feeds With Cameo in PowerPoint

T he widespread adoption of remote work and virtual meetings has led many people and organizations to realize they don't have to be physically present in the same conference room to make presentations. In fact, you don't even need to conduct them live.

However, recording your PowerPoint slides with your face on them requires technical know-how and third-party apps like OBS. This makes recording presentations a bit difficult and discourages people from doing it.

Thankfully, Microsoft has addressed this issue in PowerPoint 365 with the Cameo feature. Here's what it is and how to use it.

What Is Cameo in PowerPoint?

Cameo is a PowerPoint feature that lets you add your webcam or any other camera feed into your presentation. This makes it easier to present virtually, as your audience can see you from within your slides.

Previously, you needed a third-party app like OBS to overlay yourself on your presentation. You can also use a green screen overlay in Capcut or other similar apps to achieve the same effect. However, this takes a lot of effort and know-how.

But with this feature, you can do it from inside PowerPoint with just a few clicks. Here's how to insert a cameo into your slides.

  • Go to Insert > Cameo .
  • After clicking on Cameo, PowerPoint will insert a placeholder object on your current slide and open the Camera Format tab.
  • You can edit the object as you wish, much like any other shape on PowerPoint. You can also click on the options in the Designer pane on the right side of the screen to help you work faster.
  • Once you're happy with its placement on your slide, click on the Preview button to see your live video.

With that, you can start presenting your PowerPoint slides via screen sharing while still keeping yourself on the screen.

How to Record Your PowerPoint Presentation With Cameo

You can also insert a cameo from Record > Cameo . Clicking on this will bring you to the same menu tab and insert a placeholder object for your video. However, even if you didn't set up Cameo beforehand, you can insert it directly while recording your presentation. Here's how:

  • Go to Record > From Beginning or Record > From Current Slide .
  • In the recording screen, click on the Camera icon at the top. This will insert a round object containing your video in your slides' lower-right-hand section.
  • Click on the Red icon to start recording your presentation.
  • Go through your presentation as usual. For more information, check out our guide on turning your presentations into videos .
  • Once you've finished, click the Red icon again to stop recording.
  • Click Export to go to the Export to video screen .
  • Change the File Name as needed, then click Browse to select the location where you will save your recorded video.
  • Once done, click Export Video .

With that, you don't have to spend much effort to add your video feed to your PowerPoint presentation recording. However, the app only places your video at one location across every slide; it might cover some of your content. That's why it's better to use the Cameo feature when you're building or editing your PowerPoint presentation.

If you're unhappy with your recording, press the Retake Video on the left of the record icon. You can pick between On Current Slide or On All Slides .

What You Need to Record Customized Camera Feeds

You need a webcam and a Microsoft 365 account to record your customized camera feed. Furthermore, you cannot use Cameo or record presentations in the PowerPoint web app. You need to download and install it on your computer to use these features.

The Cameo feature is already available on Microsoft PowerPoint 365 in Windows and Mac. However, recording your presentation with Cameo is only available on Windows. As of the time of writing, this feature isn't available for the main PowerPoint 365 for Mac version.

If you're running macOS, you must be a Microsoft 365 Insider to get this feature. However, since the Cameo recording feature is already announced in the Microsoft 365 Insider blog , we hope it will be available in the mainstream PowerPoint for Mac version in a few months.

Recording Your Presentations Is Now Much Easier

The Cameo feature has made presenting PowerPoint slides in video calls easier. And with the recording function, you no longer need a third-party app to put your video over your presentation.

You can integrate it into each slide, allowing you to control where you are on your screen. And you also save a lot of time and effort, as you can record and save your presentation as a video from within Microsoft PowerPoint.
