A-level  MEDIA STUDIES

media a2 coursework

ADVANCED MEDIA

For the full linear course, you will be producing ADVANCED pieces of coursework and writing Media essays that exhibit an understanding of knowledge, theory and the media framework (representation and media language).  You will also have opportunities to develop your creativity and identity as a media producer.  If you would like to know more about the specification content then just follow this link and select your school's/college's exam board

Typically the coursework component requires a greater variety of technical skills to be learned and applied, you can find best examples in the G324 section of this page.

For the exam component, there is typically more emphasis on evaluation and the ability to debate using modern ideas and arguments (theory) so please use the theory page to add weight to your argument and opinion.  Case studies also need to be developed fully so look out for them also.

Week 6 12th

In section A this week we've been carrying out genre research so we are knowledgable about all the genres and are able to make a decision on which genres we wish to explore more in depth.

In Section B we have continued to analyse Django Unchained and have created a essay using our analysis to make a decision on whether Django is postmodern or not.

Week 7 19th

In section  A this week we chose two genres to begin indepth research on, we then got into groups with people that had similar choices of genre to us. I chose Action Adventure and Independent, I've partnered with Callum who is researching Action Adventure and Gangster genre. This will be the group that we work in to create our short film later in the school year.

Week 8 | 3rd Nov

This week the class is showing off the genre presentations that we've created over the half term. Me and Callum presented our power points on the Action Adventure genre and Gangster genre to the class. After looking at each others presentations we have decided to use Gangster as the genre for our short film.

media a2 coursework

Week 9 | 10th

Since Gangster is mine and Callums chosen genre for our short film we have begun to put together a video board of elements related to gangster films e.g. music, pictures, clips from influential films.

media a2 coursework

Week 10 | 17th

Carried on working on the video board and have started to watch Psycho as a case study of a noir film as we are interested in using that in tandem with our gangster genre for our short film.

Week 11 | 24th

We have finished watching psycho in class, and have chosen two more films in the genre that we are interested in too create case studies for. Me and Callum have chosen to create case studies for The Godfather and Goodfellas. In addition to this we are preping for our section B mock on postmodernism.

Week 12 | 1st December

I have watched and analysed The Godfather by Francis Ford Coppola for a case study, we didn't have any lessons this week as we were away on study leave due to the mocks.

media a2 coursework

Me and my partner Callum have created a case study for The Godfather using Power Point. We are going to present this to the class during are next lesson.

media a2 coursework

Week 14 | 15th December

We presented are findings to the class, the powerpoint covered general information about the film such as the synopsis, actors, Director but mostly focussed on shots and techniques that we thought looked good/interesting. Hopefully we can find a way to work some of these shots into our short film.

media a2 coursework

Week 15 | 22nd and 29th CHRISTMAS

Christmas break is here, over the holiday me and my partner will be brainstorming ideas for our shot films plot while also watching as many gangster films as possible for inspiration.

media a2 coursework

Week 21 | Sat 14th Febuary

The week was spent researching gangster film posters, radio adverts, and organising actors and use of the room we wanted to record in.  On the Friday we shot the 1st and 4th Act of the film.

Week 16 | 5th January

We've created a timeline of the short films construction throughout Jan and Feb, we will attempt to stick to this so as to finish everything before the deadline.  We've created a questionaire that we will give out to the rest of Sixth Form, the responses that we get back will help us make key decisions for the film. Additionally we've begun to created a breif summary of the films plot, this will be adjusted based on the questionaire responses.

media a2 coursework

Week 18 | 20th January

The storyboard is completed, me and Callum are going to go loaction scouting after school this week and script the film. We've found most of the films cast.

media a2 coursework

Week 20 | 6th Febuary

Some of the actors were busy on the filming day so we'll film it when they're free next week. The last friday of term is an inset day so we'll shoot during the day.  I've started looking at Gangster film posters, looking for one that I could emulate.

media a2 coursework

Week 22 | 16th Febuary HALFTERM

We'd hoped to finish filming this week but one of the actors has been unreliable. Will have to shoot the rest after school once we go back. I've started to design my film poster.

Week 23 | 23rd Febuary

I finished the first draft of my gangster film poster and have shifted my attention towards the radio trailer. I am limited to what I can do with that as I need the MP3's from our finished film to create one. Filming didn't happen after school this week as one of the actors has dropped out and we have to search for another.

Week 24 | 3rd March

I've started researching radio adverts, and have written a rough script of what I want the radio ad to say.

We've shot the first few shots of act two.

Week 25 | 11th March

I've recorded the voiceovers for my radio advertisment.

We've had some issues with filming so we've had to recast actors again and now I'm starring in the film as well.

Week 26 | 18th March

A highly useful starting point for students. Would have been better as a word document to allow some additional sections to be added.
